Context
Information about variations in basic density (BD) and carbon content (%C) along tree stems is key to assessing forest carbon sinks.Aims
The aim of the study was to determine any differences in %C and BD between different woody tissues (bark, sapwood and heartwood) in two widespread European oak species (Quercus pyrenaica and Quercus petraea).Methods
Twenty trees were felled in northern Spain, and 317 discs cut from the trees were dried and analysed to determine %C and BD.Results
There were significant differences in %C between bark, heartwood and sapwood, and between species. There were also significant differences in BD between the tissues (heartwood?>?sapwood?>?bark), and the BD was higher in Q. petraea than in Q. pyrenaica. Both %C and BD varied along the stem.Conclusion

Focussing on four types of parenchyma cell around pith regions of branches of Robinia pseudoacacia L. var. inermis, we examined the timing and role of cell death during heartwood formation. Large parenchyma cells that were located in the
inner part of the pith died within a year. By contrast, other parenchyma cells died within 4 years, with the timing of cell
death depending on the type of cell. Axial parenchyma cells of the xylem close to the pith died first. Then, small parenchyma
cells died in the perimedullary zone in the outer part of the pith. Finally, ray parenchyma cells in the xylem close to the
pith died. Variations in the autofluorescence of cell walls, which might have been due to deposition of heartwood substances,
were observed first in xylem ray parenchyma cells and small parenchyma cells in the perimedullary zone. Our results indicate
that the initiation of heartwood formation occurs within 4 years in pith regions of branches in Robinia pseudoacacia L. var. inermis. Moreover, it appears that not only xylem ray parenchyma cells but also small parenchyma cells in the perimedullary zone

Calocedrus formosana Florin (Cupressaceae) is an endemic tree to Taiwan. To evaluate the antioxidant activity of the plant extracts from heartwood, bark, and leaf of C. formosana, assays for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and superoxide anion scavenging activities, as well as prevention of DNA strand cleavage were performed in this study. Similar IC50 values against the DPPH radical were found for the heartwood and bark extracts at approximately 23µg/ml. Moreover, the heartwood extract exhibited the highest inhibitory activity against superoxide radicals among the test samples; a 2.3-fold lower value of IC50 for superoxide radical inhibition was found in the heartwood extract relative to that of (+)-catechin. Much less effect on inhibition of DPPH and superoxide radicals was found from the leaf extract of C. formosana. More than 70% of superoxide radicals were inhibited in the presence of 10µg/ml heartwood extract, whereas only 15% inhibition was obtained from the leaf extract. The heartwood extract, at a dose of approximately 0.5mg/ml, apparently completely prevented the X174 supercoiled DNA cleavage induced by ultraviolet photolysis of H2O2, as judged by agarose gel electrophoresis. This report also suggests that the antioxidant activities of the plant extracts of C. formosana are in good correlation with their phenolic contents. 相似文献
