Six of a group of 100 feeder lambs that had been deprived of sodium chloride, then more recently deprived of water, developed water deprivation-sodium chloride intoxication soon after water and a mineral supplement containing sodium chloride were reintroduced. The clinical signs included somnolence, intense thirst, and generalized muscle fasciculations. Serum chemical analyses revealed profound hypernatremia and hyperchloremia. Two mildly affected lambs recovered with partial water restriction and 2 severely affected lambs died despite medication to reduce cerebral edema. Postmortem examination of the 2 treated lambs and the 2 lambs found dead revealed microscopic evidence of cerebral edema and cerebrocorticonecrosis.  相似文献

Hypokalemia, hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, hypernatremia, hypocalcemia, and hypercalcemia are commonly seen in emergency medicine. Severe abnormalities in any of these electrolytes can cause potentially life-threatening consequences to the patient. It is essential that the clinician understand and correct (if possible) the underlying cause of each disorder and recognize the importance of the rates of correction, especially with serum sodium disorders. The recommended doses in this article might have to be adjusted to the individual patient, and these modifications must be adjusted again to the pathophysiology of the primary underlying disorder.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess changes in systemic hydration, concentrations of electrolytes in plasma, hydration of colonic contents and feces, and gastrointestinal transit in horses treated with IV fluid therapy or enteral administration of magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), sodium sulfate (NaSO4), water, or a balanced electrolyte solution. ANIMALS: 7 horses with fistulas in the right dorsal colon (RDC). PROCEDURE: In a crossover design, horses alternately received 1 of 6 treatments: no treatment (control); IV fluid therapy with lactated Ringer's solution; or enteral administration of MgSO4, Na2SO4, water, or a balanced electrolyte solution via nasogastric intubation. Physical examinations were performed and samples of blood, RDC contents, and feces were collected every 6 hours during the 48 hour-observation period. Horses were muzzled for the initial 24 hours but had access to water ad libitum. Horses had access to hay, salt, and water ad libitum for the last 24 hours. RESULTS: Enteral administration of a balanced electrolyte solution and Na2SO4 were the best treatments for promoting hydration of RDC contents, followed by water. Sodium sulfate was the best treatment for promoting fecal hydration, followed by MgSO4 and the balanced electrolyte solution. Sodium sulfate caused hypocalcemia and hypernatremia, and water caused hyponatremia. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Enteral administration of a balanced electrolyte solution promoted hydration of RDC contents and may be useful in horses with large colon impactions. Enteral administration of either Na2SO4 or water may promote hydration of RDC contents but can cause severe electrolyte imbalances.  相似文献

Access to justice for qualified entities in the area of animal protection should not follow the procedures of the access to justice for qualified entities in nature protection. This access is limited to certain administrative procedures, where damages to nature and landscape are to be expected. This will not carry very far with animal protection, because the rights of animals can be injured in many ways. Considering this it seems appropriate, to give access to justice to any animal, as a creature equal to man. Whenever the rights of an animal are neglected by the administration or a citizen, they can be defended in court. As the animal cannot represent itself in court, a qualified entity in animal protection shall act on its behalf, being its lawyer. In the end this would give access to justice to qualified entities in the area of animal protection, but the right would not be restricted to certain administrative procedures. It would provide the animals with a lawyer to present their interests in court.  相似文献

Mycobacterial skin disease in cats associated with atypical mycobacteria is an uncommon disease in small animal practice, and the disease is rarely encountered in dogs. A mycobacterial etiology should be considered in cases of chronic nodular dermatitis, draining tracts, and panniculitis. Cats and dogs affected with atypical mycobacterial infections are usually otherwise healthy, and systemic illness is unusual. In most cases, a diagnosis is made based on histopathological findings and growth of a causative organism. Group IV atypical mycobacteria can usually be grown following submission of affected tissue. Treatment should be based on antibiotic sensitivity test results. Treatment is prolonged and is unsuccessful in many cases. In cases of feline leprosy and canine leproid granuloma syndrome, organisms are difficult if not impossible to grow, and clinical and histopathological findings should be used to make a diagnosis. Spontaneous resolution of disease has been reported in atypical mycobacteriosis, feline leprosy, and canine leproid granuloma syndrome.  相似文献

Animals with renal failure have a number of fairly predictable metabolic abnormalities. They are commonly presented to the veterinarian in a state of negative water balance, although prior fluid therapy in an oliguric patient may result in overhydration. Animals with oliguric ARF have sodium retention; those with polyuric ARF have increased urinary sodium loss. Chronic renal failure does not necessarily affect the ability of the renal tubule to conserve or excrete sodium, although the response to changes in sodium load is much slower than in the normal animal. Potassium retention occurs in oliguric ARF and potassium wasting in polyuric ARF; potassium balance is approximately normal in animals with CRF. Both ARF and CRF cause metabolic acidosis, although the acid-base status in a given animal will be affected by respiratory compensation, as well as other problems such as vomiting. Calcium levels are usually normal to slightly decreased in renal failure, whereas phosphorus levels are generally increased. The basic principles of fluid therapy should be used when constructing a plan for such therapy in an animal with renal failure. Intravenous administration of fluids is almost always necessary. The choice of the type of fluid, solutes, and electrolytes to be administered is based on the predicted abnormalities associated with renal failure as well as the laboratory abnormalities in the animal. Careful monitoring of the patient and periodic assessment of various laboratory parameters are necessary in order to make appropriate adjustments in fluid therapy.  相似文献

Hypodipsic hypernatremia developed in association with hypopituitarism and hydrocephalus in a 7-month-old cat. Initial clinical signs (generalized weakness, cervical ventroflexion) were related to a hypernatremia-induced polymyopathy. Forced water intake and dietary sodium restriction corrected the hypernatremia and signs of muscle dysfunction. After restoration of eunatremia, secretion of pituitary hormones normalized. It was speculated that hypothalamic dysfunction, possibly related to hydrocephalus, induced both hypodipsia and transient hypopituitarism.  相似文献

Hypernatremia in Calves   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Hypernatremia (sodium chloride intoxication) is described in two calves due to presumed mixing errors of oral electrolyte solutions while undergoing therapy for neonatal diarrhea. The experimental induction of hypernatremia in two clinically normal calves is also reported. Physical findings in diarrheic calves included depression, weakness, dehydration, and diarrhea. Serum sodium concentrations were found to be 171.6 mEq/l and 208.0 mEq/l, respectively. Treatment with intravenous fluids was attempted in both cases, but one calf died after 6 hours and the other calf died after 2 days and exhibited periodic convulsions before death. Experimental induction with oral administration of 1 l of electrolyte concentrate, which contained approximately 2750 mEq sodium revealed that the normal calves would willingly consume the solution as mixed with milk and develop clinical signs of hypernatremia within 6 hours of administration. Serum sodium concentrations of 176.0 and 179.8 were found in the experimental calves and coincided with the onset of overt depression and weakness, at which time they were euthanatized. Cerebrospinal fluid electrolyte analysis paralleled the serum electrolyte alterations.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To characterize hypernatremia in neonatal elk calves, including clinical signs, incidence, physical examination findings, and possible causes. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 26 neonatal elk calves were examined; 4 calves were evaluated twice, for a total of 30 examinations. PROCEDURE: Medical records were reviewed for signalment, history, physical examination findings, results of diagnostic tests, and response to treatment. Hypernatremia was defined as serum sodium concentration > 153 mEq/L. RESULTS: Hypernatremia was diagnosed in 14 calves and was significantly associated with diarrhea, high WBC count, high anion gap, and high serum concentrations of albumin, chloride, creatinine, and urea. Hypernatremia was not significantly associated with survival, but high serum albumin concentration and rectal temperature were significantly associated with survival of calves. Animals given antibiotics and electrolyte solutions orally prior to evaluation were significantly more likely to die than those untreated. Dehydration was a common reason for evaluation but was not significantly associated with survival. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Hypernatremia was significantly associated with diarrhea. Treatment of diarrheic elk calves is often the same as that used in bovine calves with diarrhea; however, bovine calves are commonly hypo- or normonatremic. Our experience suggests that treatment protocols used in bovine calves are unsatisfactory for elk calves. The rate at which serum sodium concentration is reduced should be < 1.7 mEq Na/L/h to avoid development of neurologic signs associated with iatrogenically induced cerebral edema.  相似文献

Application of a sodium phosphate containing enema caused life-threatening metabolic disorders in a Dachshund and two cats. Clinical signs were characterised by dehydration and various neurological deficits including seizures. Most striking laboratory abnormalities were hypernatremia, hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, and polycythemia. Despite intensive treatment the dog died, whereas the cats recovered completely. In face of possible severe and potentially fatal metabolic abnormalities sodium phosphate enemas, such as Practo-Clyss, should be used with caution or not at all in cats and small dogs.  相似文献

Neonatal camelids can develop hyperglycemia, hypernatremia, and hyperosmolarity in response to a combination of stress and inadequate water intake. Clinical signs of this syndrome include a fine head tremor, ataxia, and a base-wide stance of the hind limbs, but biochemical analyses are necessary to confirm the diagnosis. Camelids appear to be susceptible to this syndrome because of a poor insulin response to hyperglycemia; hypernatremia results from free water loss associated with glucose diuresis. Water loss associated with glucose diuresis may necessitate a higher rate of fluid administration in camelids with this syndrome than is typically used for treatment of hypernatremia in calves.  相似文献

High grazing density has given rise to concerns about grassland degradation in periurban areas in Mongolia. Moreover, whether livestock can increase without harming the vegetation in these areas in Mongolia and what types of policy measures should be implemented is not documented. As such, this study develops an integrated simulation model of grassland biomass, animal growth, and livestock management for a forest-steppe area in northern Mongolia and conducts a simulation on long-term changes. The simulations show that, under current conditions, the number of animals will continue to increase, while the grassland biomass will decrease. Cooperative grassland management would lead to an increase in grassland biomass and higher incomes for herders. Furthermore, herders’ population changes would have a significant impact on animal density adjustments, while the effects of conventional economic measures, such as a tax on animals, would be limited if all other conditions remain constant. Consequently, the synergistic effects of herder population changes and cooperative management can contribute toward maintaining the herders’ income while preserving the grassland ecosystem.  相似文献

The effects of alterations in regrouping, feeding and drinking practices were examined on a pig farm to improve animal welfare and productivity. Weaned at 35 days of age, 720 piglets were randomly assigned to 24 groups of 30 piglets in a factorial design with three factors. During the next 55 days they were regrouped once, twice or not regrouped at all, had nipple drinkers or a water trough and had 3, 6 or 10 cm trough length per animal and four meals a day or 3 cm trough length per animal and six daily meals. Simple factorial ANOVA revealed that the piglets grew very highly significantly (p < 0.001) faster if they were not regrouped, drank from water troughs and had sufficient trough length available, however, increased feeding frequency partially compensated for shorter trough length. Similar analysis of the ranges of body weights within groups showed similar, yet less significant effects in the opposite direction, i.e. where pigs grew faster there tended to be also less weight difference. It is concluded that avoidance of mixing and undisturbed, easy access to food and water is beneficial to both the welfare of the pigs as well as their productivity.  相似文献

Accidental ingestions of TCAs by companion animals often occur. During the past 4 years, over 450 cases have been reported to the IAPIC. At least 7% of the animals that displayed clinical signs of toxicosis eventually died. Overdoses of TCAs adversely affect the cardiovascular, parasympathetic, and central nervous systems. The cardiovascular system is involved most seriously and ventricular arrhythmias with severe hypotension are believed to be the primary cause of death. Animals that ingest a potentially lethal dose (over 15 mg/kg) may die within 1 to 2 hours if appropriate treatment is not administered. Treatment involves the use of initial life-supportive measures (control of seizures, maintenance of an airway, ventilation, and so on), detoxification of the animal (enterogastric lavage, activated charcoal, etc.), and the intravenous use of sodium bicarbonate (2-3 mEq/kg) to control signs of acidosis, hypotension, tachycardia, bradycardia, and other cardiac conduction abnormalities. The animal must then be monitored closely for the return of the clinical signs and sodium bicarbonate therapy should be repeated as needed. In addition, to enhance removal of the TCAs from the gastrointestinal tract and, ultimately, from the body, activated charcoal should be repeated at 3-hour intervals until the animal is asymptomatic.  相似文献

A glucose glycine electrolyte solution (GGES) was investigated to determine its suitability for oral rehydration in diarrhoea in pigs. Piglets with diarrhoea following experimental infection with eneteropathogenic Escherichia coli were given access in cube drinkers to either GGES or water. The mortality in the GGES group (11.6 per cent) was significantly (P less than 0.05) less than in the controls (24.0 per cent), and weight gain in severely diarrhoeic piglets was greater in the GGES group. Gnotobiotic piglets were challenged with pig rotavirus and either given access to GGES or milk. The GGES was either in restricted volume or ad lib. Restricted access to GGES prevented much of the weight loss due to the diarrhoea and ad lib access to GGES allowed relatively uninterrupted weight gain in comparison with controls. In naturally occurring cases of diarrhoea on farms, access to GGES reduced mortality to weaning from 19.7 per cent to 7.2 per cent (P less than 0.05). Weight gain per day was also greater in piglets which scoured for three days or more, indicating the rehydrating effect in reducing net fluid loss. Thus GGES treatment was of value in treatment e&ects of diarrhoea due to either E. coli or rotavirus.  相似文献

Pseudothrombocytopenia (PTCP) secondary to the effects of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) has been noted in horses and pigs and should be considered in dogs with moderate thrombocytopenia and no clinical bleeding tendency. This type of pseudothrombocytopenia is not a pathological process by itself, but it can be clinically significant if diagnostics and medical treatments are initiated based on the reported thrombocytopenia. Platelet clumping occurs with EDTA-dependent PTCP, resulting in inaccurate hematology analyzer platelet concentrations. A nontraumatic venipuncture may be sufficient to obtain an accurate platelet count. However, rare cases in the dog may require blood drawn into a different anticoagulant, such as sodium citrate, to help discriminate a true thrombocytopenia from PTCP.  相似文献

Raccoon-variant rabies was confirmed in 7 pet rabbits and 1 pet guinea pig in New York State, and postexposure treatment was required in several adults and children. To prevent rabies virus infection, domestic rabbits and pet rodents should be protected from contact with wild animals, including double-cage housing when housed outside. Pet rabbits or rodents with any possible contact with a wild animal, particularly if the rabbit or rodent had wounds of unknown origin, should be quarantined for 6 months for observation, to prevent escape, and to avoid contact with humans, who will require treatment if the rabbit or rodent develops rabies. Bites and scratches to humans from rodents and lagomorphs should be evaluated for potential rabies exposure on an individual basis, with consideration of whether the animal was caged outside or permitted outdoors unsupervised.  相似文献

Pulmonary edema is the most common complication of left‐sided heart failure in dogs and early detection is important for effective clinical management. In people, pulmonary edema is commonly diagnosed based on transthoracic ultrasonography and detection of B line artifacts (vertical, narrow‐based, well‐defined hyperechoic rays arising from the pleural surface). The purpose of this study was to determine whether B line artifacts could also be useful diagnostic predictors for cardiogenic pulmonary edema in dogs. Thirty‐one normal dogs and nine dogs with cardiogenic pulmonary edema were prospectively recruited. For each dog, presence or absence of cardiogenic pulmonary edema was based on physical examination, heartworm testing, thoracic radiographs, and echocardiography. A single observer performed transthoracic ultrasonography in all dogs and recorded video clips and still images for each of four quadrants in each hemithorax. Distribution, sonographic characteristics, and number of B lines per thoracic quadrant were determined and compared between groups. B lines were detected in 31% of normal dogs (mean 0.9 ± 0.3 SD per dog) and 100% of dogs with cardiogenic pulmonary edema (mean 6.2 ± 3.8 SD per dog). Artifacts were more numerous and widely distributed in dogs with congestive heart failure (P < 0.0001). In severe cases, B lines increased in number and became confluent. The locations of B line artifacts appeared consistent with locations of edema on radiographs. Findings from the current study supported the use of thoracic ultrasonography and detection of B lines as techniques for diagnosing cardiogenic pulmonary edema in dogs.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of BW, feed intake, and the physiological condition of the animal on the loss and amino acid composition of endogenous protein in swine. Ten growing barrows and five multiparous sows were equipped with a T-cannula in the distal ileum for digesta collection. A protein-free diet was fed to all animals. The barrows were given free access to the experimental diet. The sows also were allowed to consume the diet on an ad libitum basis, and digesta were collected during lactation and in the following gestation period. In addition, digesta from the gravid sows were collected after restricting the sows to 2 kg of feed per day. For each animal group, the endogenous losses of protein and amino acids were calculated in relation to DMI, and the amino acid composition of endogenous protein was calculated. The total endogenous gut protein loss at the distal ileum of growing pigs, lactating sows, and gestating sows, given free access to feed, was 12.4, 9.4, and 11.2 g/kg DMI, respectively. These values were not different (P > .10). However, when gestating sows were fed only 2 kg/d, 17.8 g of endogenous protein was lost per kilogram of DMI, which was higher (P < .05) than for any of the other groups. This difference was mainly caused by higher (P < .05) losses of glycine, proline, and serine. There were no differences (P > .05) in amino acid composition of endogenous protein between growing pigs, lactating sows, and gestating sows given free access to feed, but restricted-fed gestating sows had an amino acid composition of endogenous protein that was significantly different from that of the other groups. The results from the experiment showed that age, BW, and the physiological condition of the animal have little or no effect on the amount of endogenous protein and amino acids lost at the distal ileum of hogs if calculated in relation to DMI. Likewise, the amino acid composition was not affected by the BW or physiological condition of the animal. However, DMI had a significant effect on endogenous protein losses in sows as well as on amino acid composition of endogenous protein.  相似文献
