Intravenous administration of xylazine to beef cattle (10 animals, 0.2 mg/kg of body weight) resulted in rapid onset (less than 15 minutes) of hyperglycemia. Plasma glucose values increased to 195 +/- 15 mg/dl and 305 +/- 10 mg/dl at 15 minutes and 3 hours, respectively. Concomitantly, plasma insulin concentrations dropped from 23 +/- 2 microU/ml before xylazine to 5.8 +/- 0.7 microU/ml and 2.4 +/- 0.3 microU/ml at 15 minutes and 3 hours, respectively. Parallel decreases (20%) were observed for percentage of hemoglobin, red blood cell number, and packed cell volume. Plasma urea nitrogen was significantly (P less than 0.01) incrased within 3 hours of xylazine administration (6.7 +/- 0.9 mg/dl vs 11.4 +/- 0.7 mg/dl). Marked changes in concentrations of plasma-free fatty acids were not observed. Alternative means of anesthesia must be considered in those instances in which biopsy material is to be used for studies of carbohydrate metabolism in vitro.  相似文献

Hypophosphatemia was induced in 2 cows by reducing phosphorus content in their feed after parturition. Serum inorganic phosphorus (Pi) values decreased to 1 mg/dl within 10 days after parturition; and RBC adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) and reduced glutathione values decreased to 50 and 70% of baseline values, respectively. Methemoglobin concentration was moderately higher than normal. These changes preceded the onset of hemolysis, and anemia progressed with decreases in PCV, hemoglobin concentration, and RBC counts. Serum Pi resumed its normal value when anemia was most severe. This RBC disorder was confirmed to be characteristic of hemolytic anemia in cows resulting from hypophosphatemia. The RBC glycolytic intermediates, total triose phosphate (combined glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate content) and fructose-1,6-diphosphate, greatly increased in vivo and in vitro with decreases in serum or plasma Pi and RBC ATP. From our results, we concluded that inadequate Pi in the plasma impairs the function and viability of RBC by hindering the production of ATP via disturbance of reactions at the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase step.  相似文献

Blood and serum from normal degus (Octodon degus) that ranged in age from 3 to 48 months were analyzed to determine reference hematologic and serum protein values. Both sexes were evaluated and were similar. The hematologic and serum protein values for males were: erythrocytes, 8.69 +/- 0.19 X 10(6) /microliter; packed cell volume, 42.1% +/- 0.59%; hemoglobin, 12.0 +/- 0.15 g/dl; leukocytes, 8.50 +/- 0.39 X 10(3)/microliter; neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ration, 40:60; and total protein, 5.70 +/- 0.20 g/dl. The hematologic and serum protein values for females were: erythrocytes, 8.94 +/- 0.16 X 10(6)/microliter; packed cell volume, 40.0% +/- 0.61%; hemoglobin, 11.7 +/- 0.17 g/dl; leukocytes, 8.20 +/- 0.36 X 10(3)/microliter; neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, 40:60; and total protein, 5.62 +/- 0.18 g/dl. The hematologic and serum protein values for the degu were similar in some respects to values reported for guinea pigs and rats.  相似文献

This study was conducted to elucidate the hemolytic activity of a new toxic substance in bracken fern. A crude extract (CE) was prepared from the methanol extracts of bracken by the column chromatography. When the CE was injected subcutaneously in guinea pigs, the hemoglobinuria and hemolysis were observed within 6 hr, and 3 days later edema and hemorrhages in the urinary bladder were observed. The CE was then fractionated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and three (HF, BF and CF) of the fractions showed the toxic activities in guinea pigs. The HF caused the hemolysis, whereas both the BF and the CF caused the hemorrhagic cystitis without any hemolytic activities. The HF was further fractionated by the HPLC, resulting of the 3 fractions (HF-I, II and III). The hemolysis was caused only with the HF-II, and HF-II as well as HF did not cause the hemorrhagic cystitis. HPLC analysis revealed that both BF and CF contains braxin B and braxin C, respectively, and both HF and HF-II do not contain braxin A, B or C. These facts suggest that bracken fern contains a new toxic substance (hemolysin) which induces the acute hemolysis in guinea pigs.  相似文献

Acute zinc toxicosis from the ingestion of pennies was diagnosed in a dog with Heinz body hemolytic anemia (PCV = 14%), leukocytosis (51,000 cells/ml) with a left shift (3,060 band neutrophils; 37,740 segmented neutrophils) and monocytosis (4,080 cells/ml), azotemia (BUN = 60 mg/dl), bilirubinemia (total bilirubin = 5.3 mg/dl), hypokalemia (3.0 mEq/L), high serum alkaline phosphatase activity (691 U/L), high total plasma solids (8.1 g/dl), hemoglobinuria, and proteinuria. Despite aggressive medical treatment, renal failure ensued, and the dog died of cardiac arrest. The clinical signs, clinical course, and laboratory findings in this dog were similar to what has been reported in other cases of acute zinc toxicosis in dogs, with the exception of a history of generalized seizures and the findings of Heinz bodies. Although a causative relationship between plasma zinc values and Heinz body formation cannot be proven, their association suggests that oxidative damage to erythrocyte hemoglobin and cell membrane proteins may be involved in the pathogenesis of zinc-induced hemolysis.  相似文献

When 400 micrograms ivermectin/kg was administered subcutaneously to rabbits infected with the ear mite Psoroptes cuniculi it significantly reduced the clinical score, and when 500 micrograms ivermectin/kg was administered subcutaneously to guinea pigs with mange due to Trixacaurus caviae it resulted in a clinical cure. In rabbits a subcutaneous dose of 400 micrograms/kg produced high and sustained concentrations of ivermectin in the tissues and body fluids for at least 13 days and its rate of depletion from tissues was similar to that observed in sheep and rats. The mean (+/- sem) maximum concentration in plasma was 42.0 +/- 9.7 ng/ml 37.2 +/- 5.0 hours after administration and the area under the concentration-time curve was 3543 +/- 580 ng/ml hours. After the administration of 500 micrograms ivermectin/kg to guinea pigs orally, subcutaneously or topically the drug could be detected in the plasma only after subcutaneous administration. The mean concentration 72 hours after its administration to four guinea pigs was 0.7 +/- 0.3 ng/ml.  相似文献

Methods for the measurement of plasma or serum triglyceride concentrations usually quantify the glycerol released by enzymatic hydrolysis of the triglyceride molecule. Any free glycerol in the sample is measured erroneously as triglyceride in these methods. As miniature swine have been used commonly for comparative studies of plasma lipoprotein lipids, this study was conducted to assess the need for free glycerol correction of plasma triglyceride measurements by comparing glycerol-blank corrected and non-corrected total plasma triglyceride concentrations from fasted minipigs. Fasting plasma free glycerol concentrations range from 9 to 14 mg/dl. The mean +/- SD (n = 16) glycerol-blank corrected total plasma triglyceride value (77 +/- 8 mg/dl) was significantly (p < 0.001) less than the uncorrected measurement value (189 +/- 12 mg/dl). Poor correlation (r = 0.24) between corrected and uncorrected total plasma triglyceride measurements suggests that mathematic correction by a constant correction factor would yield inaccurate results for miniature swine. Free glycerol blanking is essential for determination of the true total plasma triglyceride concentration.  相似文献

Thyroxine (T4), 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3), and cortisol frequently are quantified in canine serum or plasma samples to aid in the diagnosis of hypothyroidism, hypoadrenocorticism, and hyperadrenocorticism. Many laboratories have established reliable references values for concentrations of these hormones in blood of clinically normal animals. However, nonpathologic factors that affect thyroidal and adrenocortical secretion may lead to misinterpretation of test results when values for individual animals are compared with reference values. The objective of the study reported here was to identify effects of age, sex, and body size (ie, breed) on serum concentrations of T3, T4, and cortisol in dogs. Blood samples were collected from 1,074 healthy dogs, and serum concentrations of the iodothyronines and cortisol were evaluated for effects of breed/size, sex, and age. Mean (+/- SEM) serum concentration of T4 was greater in small (2.45 +/- 0.06 micrograms/dl)- than in medium (1.94 +/- 0.04 micrograms/dl)- or large (2.03 +/- 0.03 micrograms/dl)-breed dogs, the same in females (2.11 +/- 0.04 micrograms/dl) and males (2.08 +/- 0.04 micrograms/dl), and greater in nursing pups (3.04 +/- 0.05 micrograms/dl) than in weanling pups (1.94 +/- 0.05 micrograms/dl), rapidly growing dogs (1.95 +/- 0.04 micrograms/dl), and young adult (1.90 +/- 0.06 micrograms/dl), middle-aged adult (1.72 +/- 0.05 micrograms/dl), or old adult (1.50 +/- 0.05 micrograms/dl) dogs. Dogs greater than 6 years old had lower mean serum T4 concentration than did dogs of all other ages, except middle-aged adults. Blood acid-base curve nomogram for immature domestic pigs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The purpose in this study was to characterize the acid-base status of arterial blood from healthy young domestic swine and to construct an acid-base curve nomogram appropriate to such animals. Accordingly, 40 immature, 20- to 31-kg domestic pigs were used to establish acid-base characteristics for arterial blood. Samples were collected from chronically implanted catheters while the animals were maintained under steady-state, near-basal conditions. At a measurement temperature of 38 C, pH averaged 7.496; PCO2, 40.6 mm Hg; [HCO3-], 31.6 mEq/L; PO2, 79.1 mm Hg; hemoglobin, 9.65 g/dl; hematocrit, 0.29; plasma albumin, 25.3 g/L; plasma globulin, 32.3 g/L; and plasma buffer base, 45.4 mEq/L. Hourly measurements over a 6-hour period in 6 of these pigs showed a small, but significant decrease in PO2 with time, but no significant change in acid-base status. The data showed that nomograms or other procedures based on blood characteristics of men were invalid when used to estimate base excess concentration of blood from young pigs. The normal pH of arterial blood was higher in immature pigs than in men; thus, reference values defining zero base excess were not equivalent in men and pigs. Constant PCO2 titrations were performed on arterial samples taken from 10 additional pigs, and the data were used to construct an acid-base curve nomogram in which zero base excess was defined for blood with a pH of 7.50 and a PCO2 of 40 mm Hg.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The hemolytic effect on bovine red blood cells of 5%, 10%, and 15% guaifenesin solutions in 5% dextrose, 0.9% saline (NaCl), or distilled water was determined in vitro at 2 plasma concentrations (250 micrograms/ml, 500 micrograms/ml). A solution of 5% guaifenesin in a 5% dextrose solution or 5% guaifenesin in 0.9% saline produced minimal hemolysis in vitro. The amount of hemolysis of bovine red blood cells in vitro was related to the concentration of guaifenesin, diluent (5% dextrose, 0.9% NaCl, distilled water) and the plasma concentration of guaifenesin. In addition, plasma hemoglobin was determined in 4 adult dairy cows following the IV administration of 5% and 10% guaifenesin. These studies suggest that a solution of 5% guaifenesin in 5% dextrose is the most suitable solution for clinical use in cattle.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetics of spiramycin in pigs were investigated after intravenous and oral administration. The potential therapeutically effective blood level was established after a single administration and examined in a subsidiary five day study. The rapid intravenous injection of 25 mg spiramycin/kg bodyweight produced marked salivation in all the test animals. The elimination half-life (2.3 +/- 1.2 hours) was relatively short, in accordance with the total body clearance rate (27.3 +/- 10.1 ml/minute/kg). The high volume of distribution (5.2 +/- 2.2 litres/kg) was due to the accumulation of the drug in the body tissues. The maximum plasma concentration (4.1 +/- 1.7 micrograms/ml) after oral administration of 85 to 100 mg spiramycin/kg bodyweight was reached after 3.7 +/- 0.8 hours and the half-life of the elimination phase was 6.0 +/- 2.4 hours. The oral bioavailability was 45.4 +/- 23.4 per cent. Ad libitum feeding of a diet containing 2550 mg spiramycin/kg produced a steady state concentration of 0.96 +/- 0.27 micrograms/ml. This plasma concentration would provide a potentially therapeutically effective blood concentration against Mycoplasma species, Streptococcus species and Staphylococcus species.  相似文献

The purpose of this work was to assess the clinical, haematological and biochemical responses of pigs experimentally inoculated with Trichinella spiralis. Groups of three pigs were inoculated per os with 100, 500 and 5000 T. spiralis muscle larvae, two pigs were used as control. Clinical evaluation of disease in pigs included daily examination, rectal temperature measurements and cardiac and respiration rates. Haematological studies included: hematocrit (%), hemoglobin (g/dl), and white cell, neutrophil, lymphocyte and eosinophil counts. Blood biochemistry included: bun (mg/dl), creatinine (mg/dl), AST (UI/l), ALT (UI/l), CPK (UI/l) and ALP (UI/l). No significant differences were observed in rectal temperature and in cardiac and respiration rates between inoculated animals and the control group (p> or =0.05). Significant differences were detected (p< or =0.05) in the values of % hemoglobin, and eosinophils, as well as in the values of CK, ALP, AST and ALT. The variations observed in some cases were related to the number of T. spiralis larvae inoculated and varied with the number of days post-infection. Inoculated pigs showed significant differences (p< or =0.05) in weight gain when compared with uninoculated controls. This study has clinical, haematological, and enzyme alterations in Trichinella infected pigs provides a better understanding of acute and chronic trichinellosis in pigs.  相似文献

Fasting is associated with unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in several species, including the horse. Studies in ponies showed that a 3-day fast decreased plasma clearance of bilirubin, cholic acid, and sulfobromophthalein (BSP). Since these organic anions are conjugated with different substrates, it is possible that observed differences in plasma clearance result from a general decrease in hepatic conjugating capacity during the animals' fasting. To test this hypothesis, the effects of a 3-day fast on plasma clearance of IV injected BSP (4.4 to 5.1 mg/kg), which is conjugated to glutathione, and indocyanine green (ICG; 0.8 to 1.1 mg/kg), which is not conjugated, were studied in 10 healthy horses and 2 ponies with diverted enterohepatic circulations (indwelling T tubes). Blood samples were obtained for 30 minutes after injection, and bile samples from ponies were obtained for 3 hours. Fasting increased plasma bilirubin concentration in all animals studied (from 1.03 +/- 0.337 mg/dl in control animals to 3.49 +/- 1.01 mg/dl in fasted animals). Kinetic values of ICG disappearance were determined from single exponential functions, and those for BSP were determined from both single and curvilinear (2-exponential) functions. Plasma clearance of BSP in fed horses (8.65 +/- 1.02 ml X min-1 X kg-1) was greater than clearance of ICG (3.54 +/- 0.67 ml X min-1 X kg-1), results similar to those reported in dogs, cats, rats, and persons. The effects of pregnancy on some biochemical parameters were studied using 20 sexually mature, cycling goats with weight range 20-25 kg. They were randomly separated into two groups of 10 animals each. In one group, oestrus was detected while going round with a buck in the morning and evening; a single buck on detection of oestrus mated the does and the does were tagged as pregnant after confirmation of non-return of oestrus. The other group was kept cycling and tagged as non-pregnant. The mean serum glucose concentration in pregnant does was 63.35 +/- 7.70 mg/dl, significantly lower than 71.59 +/- 1.14 mg/dl for non-pregnant does (p < 0.05); the mean serum cholesterol concentrations were 79.48 +/- 14.93 for pregnant and 67.29 +/- 1.10 for non-pregnant does, with significant difference (p < 0.05). Protein (g/dl), urea (mg/dl), creatinine (mg/dl) and free fatty acid (microequiv/L) remained unchanged between the two groups (p > 0.05), as did the liver enzymes (ALT, AST). Therefore this study showed that low serum glucose and high cholesterol levels are features of mid to late pregnancy in Sahel goats.  相似文献

The effect of orally administered ketoconazole on plasma cortisol concentration in dogs with hyperadrenocorticism was evaluated. Every 30 minutes from 0800 hours through 1600 hours and again at 1800 hours, 2000 hours, and 0800 hours the following morning, 15 clinically normal dogs and 49 dogs with hyperadrenocorticism had plasma samples obtained and analyzed for cortisol concentration. The mean (+/- SD) plasma cortisol concentration for the initial 8-hour testing period was highest in 18 dogs with adrenocortical tumor (5.3 +/- 1.6 micrograms/dl), lowest in 15 control dogs (1.3 +/- 0.5 micrograms/dl), and intermediate in 31 dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH; 3.4 +/- 1.2 micrograms/dl). Results in each of the 2 groups of dogs with hyperadrenocorticism were significantly (P less than 0.05) different from results in control dogs, but not from each other. The same cortisol secretory experiment was performed, using 8 dogs with hyperadrenocorticism (5 with PDH; 3 with adrenocortical tumor) before and after administration at 0800 hours of 15 mg of ketoconazole/kg of body weight. Significant (P less than 0.05) decrease in the 8-hour mean plasma cortisol concentration (0.9 +/- 0.2 microgram/dl) was observed, with return to baseline plasma cortisol concentration 24 hours later. Twenty dogs with hyperadrenocorticism (11 with PDH, 9 with adrenocortical tumor) were treated with ketoconazole at a dosage of 15 mg/kg given every 12 hours for a half month to 12 months. The disease in 2 dogs with PDH failed to respond to treatment, but 18 dogs had complete resolution of clinical signs of hyperadrenocorticism and significant (P less than 0.05) reduction in plasma cortisol responsiveness to exogenous adrenocorticotropin (ACTH).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To establish reference values for Schirmer tear tests (STT) I and II, phenol red thread (PRT) tear test and eye blink frequency, and to determine corneal sensitivity for normal guinea pigs. ANIMALS STUDIED: One hundred and eight eyes of 54 adult Duncan-Hartley guinea pigs. PROCEDURE: Schirmer tear test (STT) I and then STT II were performed in 36 guinea pigs. PRT and STT I were compared in 18 adult Duncan-Hartley guinea pigs. Corneal sensitivity was determined in 23 guinea pigs by evaluating the corneal touch threshold (CTT) of five different regions using a Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer. Eye blink frequency was measured in 10 guinea pigs over a period of 20 min and in 17 guinea pigs over a period of 10 min. RESULTS: Mean STT I was 0.36 mm +/- 1.09 mm (wetting/min) and mean STT II was 0.43 mm +/- 1.29 mm (wetting/min). There was no significant difference between mean STT I and mean STT II (P = 0.79). The mean PRT-value was 16 +/- 4.7 mm (wetting/15 s), and the mean STT I-value in the same guinea pigs was 0.6 +/- 1.83 mm (wetting/min). Corneal sensitivity was significantly higher in the center than in the four limbal regions. The mean CTT for central, ventral, nasal, temporal and dorsal regions was 2, 1.7, 1.7, 1.7 and 1.6 cm or 3.7, 5.2, 5.6, 5.7 and 6.4 g/mm(2), respectively. Eye blink frequency was between two to five (mean 3.4 +/- 1.04) blinks per eye over 20 min in guinea pigs in their home environment, while in handheld and restrained guinea pigs eye blink frequency showed a variation between 0 and 17 blinks per eye (mean 3.24 +/- 3.64 blinks per eye) over 10 min. CONCLUSIONS: As there were no significant differences between STT I and STT II results, reflex tear secretion in the guinea pig may not exist. The most likely explanation is a lower corneal sensitivity in the guinea pig than in other species, such as cats, dogs and horses. Because of the small amount of tears, PRT is the preferred test for tear measurement in the guinea pig.  相似文献

To investigate the syndrome of acute intravascular hemolytic anemia in the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis), laboratory techniques used in the differential diagnosis of hemolytic anemias were performed on blood samples from 6 black rhinoceroses: 3 nonrelated healthy rhinoceroses, 1 rhinoceros with iron deficiency anemia, and 2 rhinoceroses with intravascular hemolysis. Osmotic fragility, erythrocyte membrane protein composition, hemoglobin electrophoresis, and hemoglobin stability did not distinguish between healthy and affected (anemia or hemolysis) rhinoceroses. Polyclonal antiglobulin reagents were prepared in rabbits, using whole rhinoceros serum and purified rhinoceros immunoglobulin G. These reagents were nonreactive against erythrocytes of the healthy and iron-deficient rhinoceroses. Reactions with RBC from the rhinoceros with fatal hemolytic anemia indicated increased membrane coating by the third component of complement; this was not evident in a second rhinoceros that survived a hemolytic event.  相似文献

Plasma biochemistry, iohexol clearance, endoscopic renal evaluation, and biopsy were performed in 23 clinically healthy 2-yr-old green iguanas (Iguana iguana). Mean (+/- SD) values for packed cell volume (30 +/- 3%), total protein (62 +/- 7 g/L, 6.2 +/- 0.7 g/dl), albumin (25 +/- 2 g/L, 2.5 +/- 0.2 g/dl), globulin (37 +/- 6 g/L, 3.7 +/- 0.6 g/ dl), total calcium (3.0 +/- 0.2 mmol/L, 12.0 +/- 0.7 mg/dl), ionized calcium (1.38 +/- 0.1 mmol/L), phosphorus (1.32 +/- 0.28 mmol/L, 4.1 +/- 0.9 mg/dl), uric acid (222 +/- 100 micromol/L, 3.8 +/- 1.7 mg/dl), sodium (148 +/- 3 mmol/L or mEq/ L), and potassium (2.6 +/- 0.4 mmol/L or mEq/L) were considered within normal limits. Values for urea were low (< 1.4 mmol/L, < 4 mg/dl) with 70% of samples below the detectable analyzer range. After the i.v. injection of 75 mg/ kg iohexol into the caudal (ventral coccygeal or tail) vein, serial blood collections were performed over 32 hr. Iohexol assays by high-performance liquid chromatography produced plasma iohexol clearance graphs for each lizard. A three-compartment model was used to fit area under the curve values and to obtain the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using regression analysis. The mean GFR (SD) was 16.56 +/- 3.90 ml/kg/hr, with a 95% confidence interval of 14.78-18.34 ml/kg/hr. Bilateral endoscopic renal evaluation and biopsy provided tissue samples of excellent diagnostic quality, which correlated with tissue harvested at necropsy and evaluated histologically. None of the 23 animals demonstrated any adverse effects of iohexol clearance or endoscopy. Recommended diagnostics for the evaluation of renal function and disease in the green iguana include plasma biochemical profiles, iohexol clearance, endoscopic examination, and renal biopsy.  相似文献

The following ascorbic acid levels were recorded from different organs of cattle, with all values quoted being related to mg/100 g fresh matter: 150 +/- 20 in pituitary gland, 170 +/- 40 in left adrenal gland, 45.5 +/- 12.5 in spleen, 38.1 +/- 7.3 in liver, 30.0 +/- 8.5 in cerebrum, 23.2 +/- 7.2 in cerebellum, 16.4 +/- 6.1 in kidney, 11.0 +/- 2.9 in heart, and 9.1 +/- 2.1 in M. longissimus dorsi. The ascorbic acid level in blood plasma of normally developed piglets was 6.5 +/- 2.7 mg/dl and was thus higher with significance (p less than 0.01) than that recorded from splayleg piglets which was 2.3 +/- 0.96 mg/dl. The levels in the M. semimembranosus and M. semitendinosus in piglets of moderate birth weight were higher, as well (p less than 0.05). The liver level in pigs for slaughter was 30.8 +/- 9.0 mg/100 g lower than that in piglets. Piglets exhibited genetically founded differences in their capability of biosynthesis of ascorbic acid. Effects of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) on plasma concentrations of thyroid hormones, and effects of ACTH and dexamethasone on plasma concentrations of cortisol, were studied in adult male ferrets. Thirteen ferrets were randomly assigned to test or control groups of eight and five animals, respectively. Combined (test + control groups) mean basal plasma thyroxine (T4) values were different between the TRH (1.81 +/- 0.41 micrograms/dl, mean +/- SD) and TSH (2.69 +/- 0.87 micrograms/dl) experiments, which were performed 2 months apart. Plasma T4 values significantly (P less than 0.05) increased as early as 2 hours (3.37 +/- 1.10 micrograms/dl) and remained high until 6 hours (3.45 +/- 0.86 micrograms/dl) after IV injection of 1 IU of TSH/ferret. In contrast, IV injection of 500 micrograms of TRH/ferret did not induce a significant increase until 6 hours (2.75 +/- 0.79) after injection, and induced side effects of hyperventilation, salivation, vomiting, and sedation. There was no significant increase in triiodothyronine (T3) values following TSH or TRH administration. Combined mean basal plasma cortisol values were not significantly different between ACTH stimulation (1.29 +/- 0.84 micrograms/dl) and dexamethasone suppression test (0.74 +/- 0.56 micrograms/dl) experiments. Intravenous injection of 0.5 IU of ACTH/ferret induced a significant increase in plasma cortisol concentrations by 30 minutes (5.26 +/- 1.21 micrograms/dl), which persisted until 60 minutes (5.17 +/- 1.99 micrograms/dl) after injection. Plasma cortisol values significantly decreased as early as 1 hour (0.41 +/- 0.13 micrograms/dl), and had further decreased by 5 hours (0.26 +/- 0.15 micrograms/dl) following IV injection of 0.2 mg of dexamethasone/ferret.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
