Over the last two decades, grazing intensity has increased in the temperate salt marshes of Samborombón Bay (Argentina) due to agricultural expansion and the displacement of domestic livestock to these areas. We investigated the effect of cattle grazing on soil chemical and physical properties in the higher (HE), medium (ME) and lower (LE) elevation levels of this temperate salt marsh. Soil data were collected from both a National Park, where cattle grazing has been excluded for more than 35 yrs, and an adjacent commercial livestock farm continuously grazed by cattle. We found that soil salinity was greater on the grazed than on the ungrazed sites, especially those in the ME and LE. This could be related to the upward flow of salts from the saline groundwater, driven by the increase in the proportion of bare soil on grazed sites. The increase in soil salinity changed the plant community structure through the increase of salt‐tolerant and non‐palatable species and the decrease of palatable species. Soil physical variables (soil bulk density and soil bearing capacity) were also higher on the grazed than on the ungrazed sites, which can be related to the decrease in soil organic matter (SOM), and suggest an incipient compaction process; however, the values were still lower than those considered critical for plant growth in clay soils. These results suggest that continuous grazing management in this temperate salt marsh might have negative consequences for animal production and ecosystem conservation, mainly related to the increased soil salinity. Further research will be necessary to evaluate the suitability of switching to intermittent grazing management.  相似文献

Clean‐up of contaminated soils is a costly and slow process that requires long periods of time to be effective. Therefore, direct use of contaminated sites with appropriate management is often likely to be a more efficient use of such land. Consequently, the production of safe animal forages from contaminated soils was the aim of this research. Field studies were conducted to evaluate the growth and elemental composition of river saltbush (Atriplex amnicola) grown on a metal‐contaminated soil. The soil was amended with compost at rates of 0, 15 and 30 t/ha to assess its role on plant growth and metal uptake. Compost application significantly (< 0.05) increased biomass yield, crude protein (CP) and ash content of river saltbush; in contrast, it decreased the Zn and Pb concentrations in shoot tissues. When 30 t/ha of compost was added, the Pb concentrations in the stems and leaves decreased by 32 and 38%, respectively. Despite the large total and extractable content of metals in the studied soil, shoot concentrations of these metals in Aamnicola were always maintained below potentially toxic levels. The biomass material of A. amnicola had a high nutritive value compared to conventional forage crops and could safely be used as animal forage. This work demonstrates that an Atriplex spp, A. amnicola, has significant potential for use as a safe forage crop in the sustainable on‐site management of contaminated soils.  相似文献

Certain organic constituents, amino acids, protein, proline, glycinebetaine, sugars, and starch in the leaves of Sesuvium portulacastrum, which was grown under varying levels of sodium chloride (NaCl) was determined. Total amino acids lowered at increasing levels of NaCl while the protein content increased moderately up to 600 mM and thereafter increased and decreased, respectively; however, 600 mM level of NaCl significantly differed from the untreated control plants. The concentration of total sugars declined with the increasing levels of exogenous addition of NaCl up to 600 mM. Starch content increased significantly up to 600 mM NaCl and thereafter declined slightly. Proline and glycinebetaine contents were accumulated with the corresponding increase of salinization.  相似文献

The chemical form or speciation of mercury (Hg) in the floodplain soils of the East Fork Poplar Creek in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, a site contaminated from past industrial activity, was investigated. The speciation of Hg in the soils is an important factor in controlling the fate and effect of Hg at the site and in assessing human health and ecological risk. Application of three different sequential extraction speciation schemes indicated the Hg at the site was predominantly relatively insoluble mercuric sulfide or metallic Hg, though the relative proportions of each did not agree well between procedures. Application of X-ray and electron beam studies to site soils confirmed the presence of metacinnabar, a form of mercuric sulfide, the first known evidence of authigenic mercuric sulfide formation in soils.  相似文献

Abstract

Response of Sesuvium portulacastrum L., to the elogenous addition of sodium chloride (NaCl), applied at different concentrations ranging from 100 to 900 mM was evaluated. Leaf area, shoot and root weight of the treated plants were increased significantly. Total nitrogen (N) content of leaves, stem and root was significantly increased up to 600 mM NaCl, and thereafter declined moderately. Accumulation of potassium (K), and calcium (Ca) were exponentially increased with NaCl treatment as also observed in the case of N. Sodium content of shoot and roots of S. portulacastrum increased significantly with increasing NaCl concentrations. Certain essential elements like copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) were also accumulated in all plant parts significantly, up to 600 mM. However, due to high salinization, growth and development of plants inhibited markedly. Furthermore, elemental concentration decreased beyond 600 mM level of NaCl. Due to aging and senescence, marked changes in leaf area, shoot, root volume and mineral content were observed between sampling time.  相似文献

Purpose

The remediation of soil polluted by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is of great importance due to the persistence and carcinogenic properties of PAHs. Phytoremediation has been regarded as a promising alternative among suggested approaches. For the establishment of highly effective remediation method and better understanding of the remediation mechanisms by plants, the potentials of three plant species and their planting patterns on the remediation efficacy were studied by pot experiments.  相似文献

Purpose

The presence of high concentrations of trace elements (TEs) in mine soils like those in the Sierra Minera of La Unión-Cartagena (SE Spain) limits the development of a vegetation cover on such sites, and pollution dispersion by water and wind erosion represents a serious risk for the surrounding ecosystems. The aim of this study was to evaluate different phytostabilisation procedures based on the co-culture of a legume (Bituminaria bituminosa) and a high-biomass (Piptatherum miliaceum) species for this type of soils.

Materials and methods

A pot experiment was carried out where B. bituminosa was tested as a soil pre-treatment strategy. Five different procedures were followed to study the growth stimulation or competition of both species in a contaminated soil from the Sierra Minera: (i) sowing of P. miliaceum without B. bituminosa (control treatment), (ii) sowing of P. miliaceum for co-cultivation of both species, (iii) sowing of P. miliaceum and co-cultivation of both species in soil with compost, (iv) harvesting and elimination of the aerial part of the plants before sowing of P. miliaceum and (v) harvesting and incorporation to the soil of the aerial part of B. bituminosa before sowing of P. miliaceum.

Results and discussion

The results showed that the co-culture of both species favoured the growth of P. miliaceum, whilst incorporating the aerial part of the legume to the soil increased nitrogen concentration in P. miliaceum but reduced its growth. The use of compost improved both the growth and N uptake of P. miliaceum and did not inhibit nodulation in B. bituminosa. TE extractability in the soils and accumulation in the plants were rather low and very little affected by the addition of the amendments or by co-culture of species.

Conclusions

Nitrogen availability plays an important role in P. miliaceum growth in TE-contaminated mine soils. The addition of compost together with legume cultivation is proposed as an effective combination for the cultivation of P. miliaceum in these soils, as both plant growth and soil conditions were improved following this procedure.

Purpose

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the distribution of antimony (Sb) and its species in soil fractions in order to understand better the real risk associated with Sb in the environment.

Materials and methods

Nine surface soil samples contaminated from lead/zinc and iron smelting operations and coal fired power plants were examined using: (1) four-step sequential extraction procedure (BCR); (2) two-step sequential extraction including ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and NH4F; and (3) single extraction with EDTA and NaOH. Liquid phase extraction was used for redox speciation of Sb. The distribution of Sb between soil fulvic and humic acids was determined after their chemical separation. The concentrations of Sb were measured by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry.

Results and discussion

The main part of total Sb (2.5–105 mg?kg?1) was associated with the residual fraction in all soils. The exchangeable/carbonate-bound concentrations were 0.83–4.7 % of total Sb. Up to 6.8 % was in the reducible and up to 1.4 % was in the oxidizable fraction. EDTA removed 7.2–11.4 % of total content. Sb(V) was the predominant form in acetic acid and EDTA extracts. Single extraction with 0.1 mol?l?1 NaOH released up to 13.7 % of soil antimony. The main part of Sb was complexed to the higher molecular weight fraction of soil-derived humic substances.

Conclusions

For highly contaminated soils, 4 % solubility in acetic acid could represent risk of contamination of ground water under specific conditions. Also, the relatively high phytoavailable Sb (7–11 %) can represent a significant proportion in highly polluted soils. Pentavalent antimony was the main antimony species extracted from soils. The main part of the organically antimony was found to be present as complexes with higher molecular weight humic acids fraction.  相似文献

表面活性剂对植物修复有机污染土壤的增效作用及原理   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Phytoremediation is becoming a cost-effective technology for the in-situ clean up of sites polluted with hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs). The major factors limiting phytoremediation are the mass transfer, rate of plant uptake, and microbial biodegradation of HOCs. This article discusses the potential of surfactants to enhance desorption, plant uptake, and biodegradation of HOCs in the contaminated sites. Positive effects of surfactants on phytoremediation have been recently observed in greenhouse studies. The presence of some nonionic surfactants including polyoxyethylene sorbltan monooleate (Tween 80) and polyoxyethylene(23)dodecanol (Brij35) at relatively low concentrations resulted in significant positive effects on phytoremediation for pyrene-contaminated soil. However, the anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) and the cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTMAB) were not useful because of their phytotoxicity or low efficiency for surfactant-enhanced phytoremediation (SEPR). The mechanisms of SEPR for HOC-contaminated sites were evaluated by considering experimental observations. In view of concerns about the cost effectiveness and toxicity of surfactants to plants, more research is needed to enhance the use of SEPR technology.  相似文献

Purpose

Determination of the effectiveness of white mustard and oats in immobilising cadmium as a soil contaminant and determining the role of cellulose and urea in restoring homeostasis in soil under pressure from Cd2+.

Materials and methods

Soil samples were contaminated with cadmium (CdCl2·21/2H2O) at 0, 4, 8 and 16 mg Cd2+ kg?1. In order to reduce the negative impact of Cd2+, cellulose was introduced to the soil at the following rates: 0 and 15 g kg?1 and urea at 80 and 160 mg N kg?1. The yield of the above-ground parts and roots was determined on days 40 and 80 of the experiment, along with the cadmium content in the plant material. The enzyme activity was also determined, and the physical and chemical properties of the soil were determined on the day of the oats’ (aftercrop) harvest.

Results and discussion

Contamination of soil with Cd2+ at 4 to 16 mg kg?1 d.m. of soil reduced the yield of white mustard and oats. The tolerance index (TI) values indicate that oats (aftercrop) is more tolerant than white mustard of soil contamination with Cd2+. Cadmium accumulated more intensely in roots compared with the above-ground parts of the plants. The translocation index (TF) indicates smaller Cd2+ translocation from roots to above-ground parts, as it was below 1 in both plants. An addition of cellulose and nitrogen offsets the adverse impact of cadmium on plants. Arylsulphatase was the most sensitive to soil contamination with Cd2+, followed by dehydrogenases, catalase, β-glucosidase and urease, and alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase were the least sensitive. Contamination of soil with Cd2+ changed its physical and chemical properties only slightly.

Conclusions

White mustard and oats have phytostabilisation potential with respect to soil contaminated with cadmium. Cellulose introduced to the soil and fertilisation with urea alleviated the negative impact of cadmium on the growth and development of plants.

Purpose

Wastes from a former Portuguese steel plant were deposited between 1961 and 2001 on the riverbank of a tributary of the Tagus River creating a landfill connected to the river, posing a potential contamination risk to the Tagus estuary ecosystem. This study aims to assess the transfer of chemical elements from contaminated sediments to the estuarine water from cycles of sediment leaching so as to evaluate the ecotoxicity of the leachates, and to analyze the solid phases crystallized from those leachates.

Materials and methods

Landfill sediment and estuarine water samples were collected during low tide. Sediment samples were analyzed for pH, electric conductivity (EC), Corg, NPK, and iron oxides. Leaching assays (four replicates) were done using estuarine water (200 cm3/replicate) and 1.5 kg of sediment per reactor. Each reactor was submitted to four leaching processes (0, 28, 49, and 77 days). The sediment was kept moist between leaching processes. Sediment (total (acid digestion) and available fraction (diluted organic acid extraction-Rhizo)) elemental concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma–instrumental neutron activation analysis (ICP/INAA). Leachates, and estuarine and sediment pore waters were analyzed for metals/metalloids by ICP/mass spectrometry (MS) and carbonates/sulfate/chloride by standard methodologies. Ecotoxicity assays were performed in leachates and estuarine and pore waters using Artemia franciscana and Brachionus plicatillis. Aliquots of the leachates were evaporated to complete dryness (23–25 °C) and crystals analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD).

Results and discussion

Sediment with pH?=?8 and high EC and Corg was contaminated with As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn. The element concentrations in the available fraction of the sediment were low compared to the sediment total concentrations (<1 % for Rhizo extraction). The concentrations of potentially hazardous elements in the estuarine water were relatively low, except for Cd. Concentrations of hazardous elements in the leachates were very low. Calcium, K, Mg, Na, and chloride concentrations were high but did not vary significantly among the four leaching experiments. Total concentrations of carbonate were much higher in leachates than in estuarine water. Both estuarine water and leachates showed negligible toxicity. Crystals identified in the solids obtained from the leachates by evaporation were halite, anhydrite, epsomite, dolomite, and polyhalite.

Conclusions

The sediment showed the capacity to retain the majority of the potentially hazardous chemical elements. Remobilization of chemical elements from sediment by leaching was essentially negligible. The variation of total concentrations of Ca, carbonate, and sulfate in leachates indicates that the sediment contained reactive sulfides. Due to its composition, the sediment seems to be a dynamic system of pollution control, which should not be disturbed.

Abstract. Using the simulation model MACRO, this paper investigates the likely consequences of reduced irrigation inputs on the water and salt balance and crop growth in a drained, saline clay in a Mediterranean climate (Marismas, SW Spain). The model was first successfully validated against field measurements of the soil water and chloride balance, water table depths and drain outflows in the 1989 growing season. Three-year simulations were then performed assuming two different irrigation applications (60 and 75% reductions from the 1989 amount) and two different frequencies (12 or 6 irrigations per growing season). The model predictions suggested that reduced irrigation may lead to up to a 15%) increase in the chloride content of the soil profile after 3 years. Also, despite overall reductions in water discharge, slight increases in chloride leaching via field drains ( c. 4 to 8%) were predicted. The model demonstrated that encroachment of salt into the soil profile may he exacerbated by the non-equilibrium nature of water flow and solute transport ('by-passing flow') in structured clays. With reduced water supply for irrigation, more frequent applications may give marginally better crop yields for the same quantity of irrigation but at the expense of slightly increasing salt concentration in the root zone.  相似文献

The effectiveness of the SS-SBR (Soil Slurry – Sequencing Batch Reactor) process for the remediation of soils contaminated by several organic pollutants has been evaluated. Experimental tests have been performed on two different soils, a spiked one and an industrial aged soil. The spiked soil, artificially contaminated, has been prepared trying to simulate the pollution of an industrial aged soil in terms of number and kind of contaminants. PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) and phenols degradation has been particularly investigated because they are considered persistent and recalcitrant. Concerning the spiked soil, removal efficiencies higher than 95% in 6 to 9 weeks have been found for all the pollutants, except for five-rings PAHs; however, these compounds were partly removed in 11 to 13 weeks. Good results have been achieved also for the industrial aged soil with a maximum removal of about 80% in 7–8 weeks. To enhance the pollutants degradation, trying to obtain a faster remediation, the biological treatment has been combined with a chemical oxidation with ozone. The best degradation effectiveness of the combined process has been obtained applying the ozonation after few days of the biological treatment. Therefore, a combined biological and chemical treatment allowed to markedly improve the remediation of contaminated soils.

Objective  Microbial communities are a central component of trophic dynamics and biogeochemical processes on coastal systems, since most of the processes in sediments are mediated by microorganisms and carried out by enzymes. Microorganisms play a key role in decomposition processes in salt marsh sediments, although the significance of microbial dynamics is largely unexplored. A culture-dependent (Ecoplate) and a culture-independent (extracellular enzyme activity [EEA]) approaches were evaluated in their ability to distinguish the catabolic potential among sediments from Tagus estuary salt marshes with different proximities to anthropogenic sources. Methods  Ecoplate was used to analyse the salt marsh community-level physiological profiles (CLPPs). Results were expressed as the net area under the curve for each of the 31 response wells over a 3-day incubation period in two sediment horizons. The catabolic profiles for salt marsh samples were analysed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and hierarchic clustering methods. EEA was analysed by fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolysis in two sediment horizons. The FDA is catalysed by extracellular enzymes, i.e. esterases, lipases and partially by proteases. Results were expressed as μg g−1d wt h−1. Results and Discussion  In this study the CLPP and EEA data were not generally correlated. In Corroios salt marsh only in surface sediments higher net areas corresponded to higher extracellular enzymatic activity, and in Alcochete deep sediments lower net areas corresponded to lower enzymatic activity. Although EEA profiles more directly reflect the inherent activity of resident community in each salt marsh sample, the CLPP profiles provide better assessments of diversity. Purpose

The influence of bone sorbent addition onto distribution of 90Sr in artificially contaminated soil was preliminary studied to assess the possibility of biogenic apatite utilization for reduction of 90Sr mobility and availability. Simultaneously, the disruption of soil micro- (Cd, Zn, Co, Cu, Cr, and Ni,) and macroelements (Al, Fe, Mn, K, Mg, and Ca) upon Sr contamination and sorbent addition was monitored.

Materials and methods

The model soil was contaminated by inactive Sr, in the form of Sr(NO3)2 solution. As a soil additive, sorbent obtained by annealing bovine bones at 400 °C (B400) was applied. Both the uncontaminated and Sr-contaminated soils were mixed with 1, 3, 5, and 10 % of sorbent, suspended in distilled water (initial pH?5; solid/solution ratio, 1:2), and equilibrated for 15 days on a rotary shaker. Solid residues were subjected to modified Tessier five-step sequential extraction analysis, and the amounts of chosen metals in each fraction were determined by inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectroscopy.

Results and discussion

In the original soil, Sr was mainly found in exchangeable (61 %) and carbonate phase (16 %), whereas after contamination, the content of Sr in exchangeable phase raised to 94 %. With the addition of B400, the decrease in Sr amounts in exchangeable fraction was detected, whereas increase occurred mainly in operationally defined carbonate phase and in the residual. High level of Sr contamination caused the increase in Zn, Ni, Co, Cu, Cd, and Mn and decrease in Ca content in exchangeable phase. Sorbent addition resulted in a migration of these cations to less soluble fractions. This effect was observed even for major soil elements such as Fe, Al, and Mn, regardless of the excessive amounts of Sr in the soil.

Conclusions

Mixing the soil with B400 resulted in reduced Sr mobility and bioavailability. B400 acted as a stabilizing agent for heavy metals, as well. Apatite distinguished selectivity towards heavy metals may interfere with the Sr immobilization and disrupt original cation distribution. Further studies should include more realistic (lower) Sr concentrations in the soil, different soil types, pH, and longer incubation times.  相似文献

The Sanjiang Plain, the second largest marsh in China, has experienced intensive cultivation over the past 50 years. Most of the marshlands were converted to soybean and rice fields. However, little is known about the effects of tillage on the soil fauna. 9 treatments, including original marshland soil, rice and soybean cultivation with and without fertilizer and herbicide applications, were imitated with 135 buckets under greenhouse conditions. The soil characteristics and Collembola in these treatments were investigated for one plant growth season. The soil environment was deteriorated (as indicated by the decreased soil oxidizable organic matter, total nitrogen and soil water content and increased soil compaction) by soybean and rice cultivation treatments. The densities and species richness of Collembola significantly decreased in the rice cultivation treatments but not in the soybean cultivation treatments. For the soybean cultivation treatments, density and species richness of the soil Collembola significantly increased in the fertilizer, herbicide and fertilizer + herbicide application treatments. It probably caused by increasing root and shoot biomass in these treatments. It is concluded that the tillage treatments in a wetland soil had both qualitative and quantitative adverse effects on the soil collembolans, and these effects might further alter the soil ecological processes.  相似文献
