In a group of 112 dogs with pyometra, 31 per cent showed a normal red blood cell picture, 57 per cent non-regenerative normocytic normochromic anaemia and 12 per cent non-regenerative microcytic hypochromic anaemia. The non-regenerative anaemia was absent or moderate at lower white blood cell levels and markedly present at high to extreme white blood cell counts. The degree of non-regenerative anaemia was positively correlated with the degree of leucocytosis, neutrophilia, left shift and monocytosis. The more pronounced non-regenerative microcytic hypochromic anaemia, indicating a more severe chronic blood loss, was usually encountered at extremely high white blood cell levels. The significance of these observations is discussed.  相似文献

A reproducible, experimental model of columnaris disease was developed to study the pathogenesis of cutaneous disease associated with Flavobacterium columnare infection in koi (Cyprinus carpio). In experimental infections, lesions were usually restricted to skin and fins; gill necrosis was not a consistent finding. Cytologic and histopathologic examinations provided a presumptive diagnosis of columnaris disease. Specific detection of F. columnare was done using the polymerase chain reaction and DNA in situ hybridization (ISH). Polymerase chain reaction allowed the detection of F. columnare in fresh biological material and in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. The DNA ISH technique allowed the identification and localization of F. columnare in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. Using these molecular techniques, F. columnare was readily detected in skin specimens from infected fish; however, the bacterium was infrequently detected in specimens of liver, kidney, and spleen. These observations suggest that columnaris disease generally presents as a cutaneous disease that is unassociated with systemic infection in koi. Hematologic studies indicated that most infected koi developed microcytic, normochromic, nonregenerative anemia and leukopenia characterized by lymphopenia, mild neutrophilia, and monocytosis. Biochemical changes in diseased fish included significant hyperglycemia, hyponatremia, and hypochloridemia.  相似文献

The pathogenicity of Theileria recondita infection in both splenectomised and non-splenectomised sheep was investigated. Following transmission of T. recondita to splenectomised animals both by adult ticks and blood transfusion a fever and severe macrocytic hypochromic anaemia developed which lasted the 9 days or more of patent infection. The prepatent period following tick attachment was about 8 days, but was variable following blood transfusion. Infection of normal animals caused a transient macrocytic hypochromic anaemia and slight fever which lasted throughout the period of low parasitaemia (7 days). The increase in mean cell volume was due to an increase in numbers of juvenile red cells in the peripheral blood. There was a transient neutrophilia and lymphocytopenia but no significant changes in thrombocyte or leucocyte numbers.  相似文献

Studies on the pathogenesis of Babesia motasi (Wales) infection following blood transfusion of infected blood to normal or splenectomised recipients showed that the intact animal is refractory to infection but that infection in splenectomised animals caused weight loss, fever, anorexia, lassitude and a macrocytic hypochromic anaemia which coincided with the peak of parasitaemia. There was an initial leucocytosis, largely due to a neutrophilia. The prepatent period following blood transfusion was 2-3 days. Unconjugated and conjugated (direct) bilirubin levels increased from pre-infection levels to peaks of 1.43 and 0.70 mg/100 ml of blood, respectively. Serum glutamic pyruvic acid transaminases (SGPT) increased slightly but serum glutamic-oxaloacetic acid transaminases (SGOT) and blood sugar (glucose) levels did not show significant changes after infection. Total serum protein levels increased temporarily and then returned to normal. Blood urea nitrogen levels increased, with biphasic peaks (76.32 and 86.29 mg/100 ml) on Days 2 and 8 post-patency. Clinical infections even in splenectomised sheep, were mild and of short duration, although recovered sheep remained carriers.  相似文献

Bone marrow aspiration for routine staging of canine cutaneous mast cell tumour is not consistently performed, and the overall incidence of bone marrow infiltration and predictive value of the complete blood count (CBC) is unknown. This study evaluated a series of 157 dogs presented for cutaneous mast cell tumours in which a CBC and bone marrow aspiration were performed. The incidence of bone marrow infiltration at initial staging was low at 2.8%, and 4.5% overall. Factors significantly associated with bone marrow infiltration included increased age, leucocytosis, anaemia, neutrophilia, monocytosis, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, being purebred and staging at the time of recurrent or progressive disease. Our study suggests that a bone marrow sample is not indicated for routine staging but maybe indicated for those dogs with mast cell tumours having either an abnormal haemogram (neutrophilia, monocytosis, eosinophilia, basophilia, anaemia and thrombocytopenia) or presenting for tumour regrowth, progression or new occurrence.  相似文献

We report hematological changes observed in natural cases of bovine trypanosomosis due to Trypanosoma vivax in beef and dairy cattle from Bolivian wetlands and Pantanal, Brazil. The main hematologic changes produced by T. vivax infections were anemia and severe leucopenia. The cattle presented macrocytic hypochromic anemia. The leukocyte changes were characterized by relative lymphocytosis and monocytosis and decrease in the neutrophil counts. The clinical signs were lachrymation, progressive weakness, marked weight loss, inappetence, diarrhea and abortions during the third trimester of pregnancy.  相似文献

A retrospective study of 27 dogs with deep mycoses was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of initial laboratory results in determining a diagnosis. Fifteen cases of disseminated blastomycosis, five cases of disseminated histoplasmosis and seven cases of gastrointestinal phycomycosis were studied. Haematologic results consistent with a chronic inflammatory disease (mild to moderate anaemia and moderate to marked monocytosis) were common findings in blastomycosis and phycomycosis. Cases of histoplasmosis were characterized by a more severe anaemia with a neutrophilia and left shift. The severe anaemia present in three out of five (3/5) dogs with histoplasmosis was apparently due to myelophthisis and intravascular erythrocyte fragmentation. Coagulation function tests and/or the haemograms suggested the presence of microangiopathic haemolysis in four dogs with histoplasmosis. Clinical chemistry results in blastomycosis and phycomycosis were usually unremarkable. Hepatic lesions in histoplasmosis were suggested by increases in serum alkaline phosphatase and decreases in serum albumin. Cytology was frequently diagnostic for blastomycosis (11/13 cases) and histoplasmosis (3/4 cases) but was inconsistent in phycomycosis (1/3 cases).  相似文献

Seventeen client-owned dogs diagnosed with spirocercosis-associated esophageal sarcomas were retrospectively reviewed. The most common clinical signs noticed were vomiting and/or regurgitation (94%), lethargy and depression (59%), pyrexia and anorexia (41% each). Leukocytosis (82%) and microcytic hypochromic anemia (30%) were the most common hematological abnormalities. Caudal thoracic masses were demonstrated on survey radiographs of 13/15 of the dogs and thoracic spondylitis was detected in 12/15 dogs. Spirocerca lupi eggs were detected in 2/8 patients and worms were demonstrated on 1/11 at necropsy. Ten cases underwent surgical attempt to remove the tumors. In six of them partial esophagectomy (PE) was performed and all of them survived the immediate postoperative hospitalization. Five of the cases that underwent PE also received chemotherapy after surgery (doxorubicin (Adriamycin, Upjohn)) with an average survival time of 267 days. The histopathological results of the esophageal tumors were osteosarcoma (9), fibrosarcoma (5) and undifferentiated sarcoma (1). In areas endemic to spirocercosis, regurgitation or vomiting in dogs and microcytic hypochromic anemia and neutrophilia warrant ruling out esophageal sarcomas. Proper surgical treatment could prolong the dogs' lifespan for months, and improve their quality of life.  相似文献

Myxoma virus (MXV) causes the systemic disease myxomatosis in the European rabbit. Despite many in vitro studies on the function of MXV immunomodulatory proteins and detailed molecular knowledge of virus, little is known about the dynamics of interaction of the virus with the integrated host-immune system during infection. In this study changes in haematological profile, changes in lymphocyte subset distribution and non-specific proliferation activity of lymphocytes from different lymphoid compartments on the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 9th and 11th day after experimental infection of rabbits with MXV strain Lausanne was characterised. The relationship between alterations of immune parameters and dynamic of virus dissemination through the body was investigated. Haematological changes included moderate leucopenia with significant lymphopenia, neutrophilia, monocytosis and eosinopenia. A decrease of T cells including CD4+ and CD8+ and increase of CD79alpha+ were observed in draining popliteal lymph node 4 days after virus inoculation. From day 6, comparable changes were seen in collateral popliteal lymph node, spleen and peripheral blood. From day 9, the mentioned lymphocyte subsets tended to reach their original state in all of these lymphocyte compartments except draining popliteal lymph node. In thymus, MXV infection affected mainly CD4+CD8+ double positive thymocytes. On the other hand, proliferation activity of lymphocytes determined by the proliferation assay with plant-derived mitogens was significantly reduced from day 4 or 6 and remained reduced until the end of experiment in all observed lymphoid organs. Presence of MXV in respective lymphoid compartments preceded changes in lymphocyte subset distribution or lymphocyte activity.  相似文献

The haematological changes, erythrokinetics and ferrokinetics of sheep were investigated after infection with Trypanosoma congolense. Following the detection of parasites in blood, the infected sheep developed macrocytic hypochromic anaemia. Studies with 51Cr-red cells, 125I-albumin and 59Fe as ferric citrate 11 weeks after infection revealed that infected sheep had significantly lower mean circulating red cell volumes but higher plasma and blood volumes than control sheep. The infected sheep also had enhanced erythropoietic activity as judged by significantly higher plasma iron turnover rates, faster disappearance of radio-labelled iron and higher iron incorporation rates than control sheep. The rate of disappearance of 51Cr-labelled red cells was greater in infected than in control sheep. It was concluded that the anaemia observed at this stage of infection was due to an increased rate of removal of red cells from the circulation coupled with haemodilution, with no evidence of dyshaemopoiesis.  相似文献

Two dogs were referred for investigation of lethargy and anaemia. Preliminary examinations by the referring veterinary surgeons had revealed severe anaemia, which was poorly regenerative. In one case, the anaemia was microcytic and, in the other, it was hypochromic. These findings were suggestive of chronic blood loss anaemia. Neither dog had external signs of gastrointestinal disease, although one had vomited on a single occasion during the two weeks preceding referral. Although both dogs were producing grossly normal faeces, further investigations detected faecal occult blood. Multiple full thickness gastrointestinal biopsies were taken at laparotomy. These showed segmental eosinophilic enteritis of the duodenum and proximal jejunum in one case, and marked chronic lymphocytic gastritis in the other. Both cases illustrate the fact that severe systemic disease can result from gastrointestinal pathology in the absence of clinical signs of gastrointestinal disease.  相似文献

Haemobartonella felis infection was demonstrated in 38 cats which could be divided into four groups as follows: group A, feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) free cats with H felis infection alone; group B, FeLV free cats with H felis infection and other clinical conditions; group C, FeLV positive cats with H felis infection but no clinical manifestation of FeLV related or any other intercurrent disease; and group D, FeLV positive cats with H felis infection and clinical manifestations of FeLV related or other diseases. Cats in group A were healthy carriers of the infection and none was anaemic, whereas some in group B had clinical haemobartonellosis and anaemia. This anaemia was mainly mild, normocytic and normochromic. Most of the cats in group C and all in group D were more severely ill and anaemic, the anaemia usually being macrocytic and hypochromic. Splenomegaly occurred only in groups C and D. Treatment with tetracyclines did not eliminate H felis from any of the cats and blood transfusions were ineffective in promoting long term recovery from anaemia in cats with intercurrent H felis and FeLV infections. The findings in the cats in groups C and D were further compared with those in a fifth group of cats which were infected with FeLV but free of H felis.  相似文献

Trypanosoma brucei infection produced an acute and fatal disease in Nigerian mongrel dogs due to a rapidly developing anaemia. Infected dogs responded with increased reticulocytosis, which was not sustained with chronicity. In comparison the response to artificially-induced haemolytic anaemia was progressive, marked and sustained. The anaemia of T. brucei infection of dogs was either normocytic normochromic in acute infection or microcytic normochromic in chronic infection. Artificially-induced haemolytic anaemia was either macrocytic normochromic or normocytic normochromic. The erythropoietic potential of plasma in vivo in mice increased in T. brucei-infected dogs except at the terminal parasitaemia. The anaemia in Trypanosoma brucei-infected dogs is therefore initially responsive but becomes poorly involved with chronicity.  相似文献

The authors carried out microscopic examination of blood smears of 1438 dogs infected with Leishmania infantum. Unusual findings of leishmaniosis associated with circulating parasitised cells are described in four dogs. Most of the dogs presented severe illness, with lethargy, dysorexia, emaciation and alterations of the haematological pattern (anaemia, thrombocytopenia, neutrophilia and monocytosis). In three cases, leishmaniosis was associated with ehrlichiosis. On examination of peripheral blood smears, Leishmania sp. amastigotes were observed both in various circulating leukocytes (neutrophil, monocyte, macrophage) and free. In conclusion, parasites can rarely be detected in blood smears (in 0.28% of the animals examined); thus, the time-consuming microscopic search for amastigotes can make only a weak contribution to the conventional diagnosis of canine leishmaniosis.  相似文献

The aim of this investigation was to examine whether reactivated Ancylostoma caninum larvae can be eliminated by the administration of moxidectin to pregnant bitches. Four pregnant bitches infected experimentally with 20,000 third-stage larvae of A. caninum were treated subcutaneously with 1 mg moxidectin/kg body weight on day 55 of the pregnancy (5-8 days before parturition). Another four experimentally infected pregnant bitches served as controls. The single moxidectin treatment completely prevented lactogenic infections in the puppies. Neither intestinal stages nor somatic larvae could be found. The administration of moxidectin caused no local or systemic side-effects in the bitches. All 22 puppies of the treated bitches were born healthy and remained so during the whole trial period. Beginning during the third week after birth, all 20 puppies of the untreated bitches developed a severe microcytic, hypochromic anaemia and they revealed a total of 8649 intestinal stages of A. caninum after autopsy.  相似文献

Four dogs were infected with Trypanosoma brucei (Mkar strain) while another four were used as uninfected controls. Two of the dogs showed acute disease and died in the first wave of parasitaemia on days 7 and 8 post infection (PI) while the other two died from the sub-acute disease on days 24 and 28 PI corresponding to the second wave of parasitaemia. In the first wave of parasitaemia there was a sharp decrease in the packed cell volume, red blood cell, haemoglobin, total leucocytes, eosinophil, neutrophil and lymphocyte values, but during the period of low parasitaemia there was a slight recovery of the values of total leucocytes and lymphocytes although these and the other values showed a continuous decrease during the second wave of parasitaemia. In contrast, there was a consistent monocytosis in both acute and sub-acute diseases. The general picture was that of loss of condition, anaemia, leucopenia, monocytosis, ocular impairment, elevated temperature, pulse and respiratory rates, the difference between the acute and sub-acute diseases being in the degree of intensity. The degree of anaemia noted and the circulatory disturbances associated with the infection could have caused the death of all the infected dogs.  相似文献

Copper (Cu) is needed by pigs and rabbits to prevent microcytic hypochromic anaemia, dermatosis and bone marrow problems and to maintain the integrity of the cardiovascular system. Cu also performs metabolic functions as a constituent of several enzymes systems in the body. Actual Cu deficiency is rare in pigs and rabbits fed balanced diets; however, in adequate Cu intake may arise under certain dietary conditions. While Cu levels higher than those required to satisfy the body needs may be dangerous for some livestock species, pigs and rabbits can tolerate and often respond to dietary Cu levels of up to 250 ppm (about 50 times higher than their requirements). This response is shown by improved growth and feed utilization. Levels approaching 500 ppm in pig diet will result in poor growth, toxicity and, in some cases, death. The rabbit, on the other hand, has a higher tolerance for Cu and will not show any toxicosis at such high Cu levels. Dietary conditions, including mineral balance, level and type of protein, as well as some energy sources like cassava meal affect Cu utilization in both species. In the rabbit, dietary ascorbic acid interferes with Cu utilization. Some implications of Cu feeding on meat quality are discussed. Suggestions are also made for further investigations on the use of Cu for efficient production of both pigs and rabbits.  相似文献

Experimental oral infections of rabbits with a wild-type Yersinia pseudotuberculosis strain (pIB102), and two null-mutants (yopK and ypkA) were carried out with the aim to explore the possibility to use mutant strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis as live carrier vaccine strains. The infectious process of the three strains proceed with passing hyperthermia, leucocytosis with granulocytosis, moderate monocytosis and a transient lymphopenia, better demonstrated at mutant strain infections. Short-term bacterial dissemination into the brain and viscera was observed at yopK infection. An augmented resistance to bactericidal activity of leucocytes at the initial phase of infection was followed by an increased sensitivity discovered earlier in case of yopK strain accompanied by at least 70- and 20-fold, respectively, for ypkA lower virulence for mice. The level of attenuation of yopK was accompanied by significant Yersinia specific IgG and IgM antibody response. Inflammatory foci were found by morphological examination in brain, lung and small intestines after infection with the wild-type strain, while such foci were only observed in brain and mesenterial lymph nodes after infection with the yopK mutant. After infection with the ypkA mutant foci were found in brain and spleen of the infected animals. Morphological changes in the lymphatic tissue of rabbits infected with mutant strains were consistent with induction of immunogenesis. The data suggest that genetically constructed yopK null-mutant exhibits characteristics that makes the strain suitable to be used as a live carrier vaccine to deliver heterologous antigens.  相似文献

Some haematological and biochemical parameters were studied in guinea-pigs infected intraperitoneally with Salmonella dublin 493 at 1×106 viable cells per animal. The infected animals showed a rise in temperature within 24 h, followed by depression and loss of body weight. On the 15th day post infection, haematological studies revealed a significant increase in the total leukocyte count due to both lymphocytosis and neutrophilia, and a decrease in the total erythrocyte count and haemoglobin concentration. There was also a significantly higher mean corpuscular volume and lower mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, indicating a macrocytic hypochromic anaemia. The infection caused a significant increase in alanine aminotransferase activity and creatinine, blood urea nitrogen and globulin concentrations, and a decrease in albumin and triiodothyronine. There was no significant effect on serum total protein or on thyroxine, or in the activity of aspartate aminotransferase in the serum.  相似文献

Lambs infected with adult Haemaphysalis punctata and rabbits infected with nymphs developed a macrocytic normochromic anaemia during seven and six successive infestations, respectively. The anaemia was directly proportional to the degree of infestation but disappeared several days after the termination of infestation. A leucocytosis, due to neutrophilia, was seen in both lambs and rabbits. Rabbits developed a thrombocytosis and reticulocytosis. Infested lambs grew less rapidly than uninfested animals. Signs of tick toxicosis and several other clinical manifestations appeared in both infested sheep and rabbits. Circulating antibodies against salivary antigen of adult H punctata were demonstrated in the sera of infested lambs by the micro-ELISA test. Titres were first detected on day 3 after infestation and increased gradually as infestation progressed. No precipitating antibodies in either infested sheep or rabbits were detected.  相似文献
