OBJECTIVE: To compare microcrack density and length in the proximal and distal metaphyses of the humerus and radius in dogs. SAMPLE POPULATION: Left humerus and radius from each of 10 dogs of medium to large size. PROCEDURE: Metaphyseal specimens were bulk stained in 1% basic fuchsin in graded alcohols and embedded in methylmethacrylate. For quantification of fatigue-induced microscopic damage, transverse sections were prepared from proximal and distal metaphyseal regions, and length and density of microcracks were determined, using light microscopy. RESULTS: Bone region, age, and body weight were not significantly associated with microcrack density or length. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The hypothesis that fatigue-induced injury (increased microcrack density and length) caused by cyclic loading associated with daily activity is greater in bone regions prone to development of osteosarcoma was not supported by data from this study.  相似文献

Acrylic external skeletal fixators (ESF) were compared with Kirschner ESF in biomechanical tests. A 2-cm unilateral acrylic ESF was found to be superior to medium Kirschner ESF in compression and shear loads. Acrylic ESF performed as well as Kirschner ESF in torsion loads. Acrylic ESF were used on 11 dogs and cats for repair of long bone fractures, for arthrodesis, or for immobilization of joints following ligament or tendon surgery. There were no complications associated with the use of acrylic ESF. Acrylic ESF offers the advantage of reduced cost, improved versatility, and simplified application technique when compared with Kirschner ESF.  相似文献

Objective To determine if anthropometric measurements of the Labrador scapula, humerus, ulna and radius, or their ratios, are related to the presence of elbow dysplasia (ED). Methods Digital calliper measurements of the lengths of the left scapula, humerus, radius and ulna, and their ratios, were analysed by gender in 103 volunteer Labradors (41 dogs, 62 bitches) against the ED radiological scores derived by the International Elbow Working Group (IEWG). The IEWG score is an umbrella score used to classify for ED and includes fragmented coronoid process, osteochondritis dessicans, incongruity and ununited anconeal process, the last of which occurs rarely in Labradors. Results Of the 103 Labradors studied, 31 were diagnosed radiographically with ED (20 bitches (32%), 11 (27%) dogs). Scapula length was significantly shorter for bitches with ED (P = 0.02), but not for dogs with ED. However, dogs showed a trend for a difference in the ulna:radius ratio (P = 0.06), which bitches did not. Although a greater percentage of bitches than dogs had ED in this study, the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions Labrador bitches diagnosed with ED have a shorter scapula, which is a new finding associated with this condition. The difference in presentation associated with gender is unexpected and further research is recommended.  相似文献

Bone plate fixation was reviewed in 29 distal radial fractures of small- and miniature-breed dogs. Twenty-two fractures in 18 dogs were available for follow-up. Number of complications and return to function were evaluated. Complications occurred in 54% of the fractures. Catastrophic complications occurred in 18% of fracture repairs with follow-up, while minor complications occurred in 36%. Sixteen (89%) of 18 dogs had a successful return to function. Bone plate fixation is a successful repair method for distal radius and ulna fractures in small-breed dogs, compared to previously reported methods.  相似文献

The biomechanical characteristics of 1.2 mm diameter allogeneic cortical bone pins harvested from the canine tibia were evaluated and compared to 1.1 mm diameter stainless steel pins and 1.3 mm diameter polydioxanone (PDS) pins using impact testing and four-point bending. The biomechanical performance of allogeneic cortical bone pins using impact testing was uniform with no significant differences between sites, side, and gender. In four-point bending, cortical bone pins harvested from the left tibia (204.8 +/- 77.4 N/mm) were significantly stiffer than the right tibia (123.7 +/- 54.4 N/mm, P = 0.0001). The site of bone pin harvest also had a significant effect on stiffness, but this was dependent on interactions with gender and side. Site C in male dogs had the highest mean stiffness in the left tibia (224.4 +/- 40.4 N/mm), but lowest stiffness in the right tibia (84.9 +/- 24.2 N/mm). Site A in female dogs had the highest mean stiffness in the left tibia (344.9 +/- 117.4 N/mm), but lowest stiffness in the right tibia (60.8 +/- 3.7 N/mm). The raw and adjusted bending properties of 1.2 mm cortical bone pins were significantly better than 1.3 mm PDS pins, but significantly worse than 1.1 mm stainless steel pins (P < 0.0001). In conclusion, cortical bone pins may be suitable as an implant for fracture fixation based on initial biomechanical comparison to stainless steel and PDS pins used in clinical practice.  相似文献

Objective— To compare monotonic biomechanical properties and fatigue life of a broad locking compression plate (LCP) fixation with a broad limited contact dynamic compression plate (LC‐DCP) fixation to repair osteotomized equine third metacarpal (MC3) bones. Study Design— In vitro biomechanical testing of paired cadaveric equine MC3 with a mid‐diaphyseal osteotomy, stabilized by 1 of 2 methods for fracture fixation. Animal Population— Cadaveric adult equine MC3 bones (n=12 pairs). Methods— MC3 were divided into 3 groups (4 pairs each) for: (1) 4‐point bending single cycle to failure testing; (2) 4‐point bending cyclic fatigue testing; and (3) torsional single cycle to failure testing. The 8‐hole, 4.5 mm LCP was applied to the dorsal surface of 1 randomly selected bone from each pair. One 8‐hole, 4.5 mm LC‐DCP) was applied dorsally to the contralateral bone from each pair. All plates and screws were applied using standard ASIF techniques. All MC3 bones had mid‐diaphyseal osteotomies. Mean test variable values for each method were compared using a paired t‐test within each group. Significance was set at P<.05. Results— Mean yield load, yield bending moment, composite rigidity, failure load and failure bending moment, under 4‐point bending, single cycle to failure, of the LCP fixation were significantly greater than those of the LC‐DCP fixation. Mean cycles to failure for 4‐point bending was significantly greater for the LCP fixation compared with LC‐DCP fixation. Mean yield load, mean composite rigidity, and mean failure load under torsional testing, single cycle to failure was significantly greater for the broad LCP fixation compared with the LC‐DCP fixation. Conclusion— The 4.5 mm LCP was superior to the 4.5 mm LC‐DCP in resisting the static overload forces (palmarodorsal 4‐point bending and torsional) and in resisting cyclic fatigue under palmarodorsal 4‐point bending. Clinical Relevance— The results of this in vitro study may provide information to aid in the selection of a biological plate for the repair of equine long bone fractures.  相似文献

Objective— To determine biomechanical flexion–extension forces in cadaveric canine lumbosacral specimens, before and after dorsal laminectomy with partial discectomy, and after dorsal pedicle screw–rod fixation of L7 and S1.
Study Design— Biomechanical cadaver study.
Animals— Cadaveric spine specimens without lumbosacral pathology from mature, intact Labrador retrievers (n=12).
Methods— Lumbosacral spine segments were subjected to a constant bending moment from L6 to S1 in a hydraulic 4-point bending materials testing machine. Force and displacement were recorded during each loading cycle constituting 1 complete flexion–extension cycle of the spine. Each spine segment had 3 series of recordings of 5 loading cycles each: (1) intact spine, (2) after surgical destabilization by dorsal laminectomy and partial discectomy, and (3) after surgical stabilization using dorsal pedicle screw–rod fixation.
Results— After dorsal laminectomy and partial discectomy, the neutral zone and range of motion were not different from those in the native spine specimen. After pedicle screw–rod fixation, the neutral zone and range of motion of the instrumented specimen significantly ( P <.0001) decreased compared with the native specimen and the specimen after dorsal laminectomy.
Conclusion— Dorsal laminectomy and partial discectomy does not lead to significant spinal instability in flexion and extension whereas pedicle screw and rod fixation effectively stabilizes the lumbosacral spine.
Clinical Relevance— Dorsal laminectomy and partial discectomy does not lead to significant spinal instability. Pedicle screw–rod fixation of L7 and S1 may be used to stabilize an unstable L7–S1 junction in dogs with degenerative lumbosacral stenosis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To compare the monotonic biomechanical properties and fatigue life of a broad, limited contact, dynamic compression plate (LC-DCP) fixation with a broad, dynamic compression plate (DCP) fixation to repair osteotomized equine 3rd metacarpal (MC3) bones. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro biomechanical testing of paired cadaveric equine MC3 with a mid-diaphyseal osteotomy, stabilized by 1 of 2 methods for fracture fixation. ANIMAL POPULATION: Twelve pairs of adult equine cadaveric MC3 bones. METHODS: Twelve pairs of equine MC3 were divided into 3 test groups (4 pairs each) for (1) 4-point bending single cycle to failure testing, (2) 4-point bending cyclic fatigue testing, and (3) torsional single cycle to failure testing. An LC-DCP (8-hole, 4.5 mm) was applied to the dorsal surface of 1 randomly selected bone from each pair. One DCP (8-hole, 4.5 mm broad) was applied dorsally to the contralateral bone from each pair. All plates and screws were applied using standard AO/ASIF techniques to MC3 bones that had mid-diaphyseal osteotomies. Mean test variable values for each method were compared using a paired t-test within each group. Significance was set at P<.05. RESULTS: The mean 4-point bending yield load, yield bending moment, composite rigidity, failure load, and failure bending moment of LC-DCP fixation were significantly greater (P<.01) than those of broad DCP fixation. Mean cycles to failure for 4-point bending was significantly (P<.001) greater for broad DCP fixation compared with broad LC-DCP fixation. Mean yield load, mean composite rigidity, and mean failure load in torsion was significantly (P<.02) greater for broad LC-DCP fixation compared with broad DCP fixation. CONCLUSION: Broad LC-DCP offers increased stability in static overload testing, however, it offers significantly less stability in cyclic fatigue testing. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The clinical relevance of the cyclic fatigue data supports the conclusion that the broad DCP fixation is biomechanically superior to the broad LC-DCP fixation in osteotomized equine MC3 bones despite the results of the static overload testing.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo describe the landmarks for localization and to determine the methodology and volume of methylene blue dye to adequately stain the auricular nerves in rabbit cadavers.Study designProspective, randomized, cadaveric study.AnimalsA total of 26 rabbit cadavers (Dutch-Belted and New Zealand White breeds).MethodsPart I: anatomical dissections were performed to identify the sensory auricular nerves and to establish the ideal injection approach and volume of dye required for nerve staining. Part II: a single injection technique using 0.1 mL kg–1 dye was evaluated for staining the greater auricular nerve and two techniques (perpendicular and angled needle approaches) using 0.075 mL kg–1 dye were evaluated for the auriculotemporal nerve. Dye spread was evaluated through cadaveric dissections and nerve staining graded using a 0–2 point scale. Injections were considered successful if the nerve was stained circumferentially. Cadavers were assessed for staining of the mandibular nerve owing to the close proximity to the auriculotemporal nerve. Fisher’s exact test and mixed effects logistic regression model were used for statistical analysis.ResultsThe greater auricular nerve was stained in 24/27 (88.9%) injections. The auriculotemporal nerve was stained in 7/12 injections (58.3%) with the perpendicular needle approach; staining success increased to 80% (12/15 injections) with the angled needle approach; however, this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.228). Mandibular nerve staining occurred on seven auriculotemporal injections with no statistically significant difference in the incidence of nerve staining between techniques. Conclusions and clinical relevanceResults suggest that the auricular nerves in rabbit cadavers can be successfully located and stained using anatomic landmarks and the described injection techniques.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To compare the mechanical properties of 2 interlocking-nail systems for fixation of ostectomized equine third metacarpi (MC3): (1) a standard interlocking nail with 2 parallel screws proximal and distal to a 1-cm ostectomy; and (2) a modified interlocking nail with 2 screws proximal and distal to a 1-cm ostectomy with the screws offset by 30 degrees. ANIMAL OR SAMPLE POPULATION--Twelve pairs of adult equine forelimbs intact from the midradius distally. METHODS--Twelve pairs of equine MC3 were divided into 2 test groups (6 pairs each): torsion and caudocranial 4-point bending. Standard interlocking nails (6-hole, 13-mm diameter, 230-mm length) were placed in 1 randomly selected bone from each pair. Modified interlocking nails (6-hole, 13-mm, 230-mm length, screw holes offset by 30 degrees) were placed in the contralateral bone from each pair. All bones had 1-cm mid-diaphyseal ostectomies. Six construct pairs were tested in caudocranial 4-point bending to determine stiffness and failure properties. The remaining 6 construct pairs were tested in torsion to determine torsional stiffness and yield load. Mean values for each fixation method were compared using a paired t test within each group. Significance was set at P <.05. RESULTS--Mean (+/-SEM) values for the MC3-standard interlocking-nail composite and the MC3-modified interlocking-nail composite, respectively, in 4-point bending were: composite rigidity, 3,119 +/- 334.5 Nm/rad (newton. meter/radian) and 3,185 +/- 401.2 Nm/rad; yield bending moment, 205.0 +/- 18.46 Nm and 186.7 +/- 6.17 Nm; and failure bending moment, 366.4 +/- 21.82 Nm and 378.1 +/- 20.41 Nm. There were no significant differences in the biomechanical values for bending between the 2 fixation methods. In torsion, mean (+/-SEM) values for the MC3-standard interlocking-nail composite and the MC3-modified interlocking-nail composite were: composite rigidity, 135.5 +/- 7.128 Nm/rad and 112.5 +/- 7.432 Nm/rad; gap stiffness, 207.6 +/- 10.57 Nm/rad and 181.7 +/- 12.89 Nm/rad; and yield load, 123.3 +/- 2.563 Nm and 107.5 +/- 8.353 Nm, respectively. Composite rigidity and gap stiffness for standard interlocking-nail fixations were significantly higher than the modified interlocking-nail fixation technique in torsion. Yield load had a tendency to be higher for the standard interlocking-nail fixation (P =.15). CONCLUSIONS--No significant differences in biomechanical properties were identified between a standard interlocking nail and one with the screw holes offset by 30 degrees in caudocranial 4-point bending. The standard interlocking nail was superior to the modified interlocking nail in torsional gap stiffness and composite rigidity. The torsional yield load also tended to be higher for the standard interlocking nail. CLINICAL RELEVANCE--The standard interlocking nail with parallel screw holes is superior to a modified interlocking nail with the screw holes offset by 30 degrees in ostectomized equine MC3 bones in vitro when tested in torsion.  相似文献

Objective— Biomechanical analysis of acute load to failure (ALF) of 3 veterinary and 1 human suture anchor and cyclic load to failure with two suture material/suture anchor constructs in canine femoral condyles.
Study Design— Biomechanical in vitro study.
Sample Population— Cadaveric femora from 20–30 kg dogs.
Methods— Three veterinary and 1 human suture anchor were placed in the cranial and caudal aspects of the femoral condyle and subjected to 0° ALF. Anchors were loaded with 5 USP Fiberwire or 27 kg test nylon leader line (NLL) and subjected to 90° cyclic testing for 10,000 cycles followed by ALF at 90°.
Results— No significant difference in ALF for any anchor type was detected in the cranial aspect of the femoral condyle; however all veterinary anchors had higher ALF in the caudal aspect of the femoral condyle. In cyclic testing, the constructs in descending order (most cycles to least) were: (1) FlexiTwist/NLL, (2) Securos/Fiberwire, Securos/NLL, (3) IMEX/Fiberwire, IMEX/NLL, and (4) FlexiTwist/Fiberwire, Fastin/Fiberwire. Fiberwire was significantly stronger than NLL in post-cycling ALF testing.
Conclusions— Veterinary anchors had higher ALF in the caudal versus cranial aspect of the femoral condyle. Except for the FlexiTwist in which NLL performed better, Fiberwire and NLL both had similar cyclic performance with each veterinary anchor type. The veterinary anchors exceeded the human anchor in ALF and cycles to failure.
Clinical Relevance— The tested veterinary suture anchors with Fiberwire or NLL may be used in the femoral condyle, preferably in the caudal aspect, and should withstand estimated loading conditions in appropriately confined postoperative canine patients.  相似文献

Radiographic analysis of the growth rate of long bones in bustards   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A serial radiographic study was conducted on seven houbara bustard (Chlamydotis undulata macqueenii), 10 rufous-crested bustard (Eupodotis ruficrista), four white-bellied bustard (Eupodotis senegalensis) and eight kori bustard (Ardeotis kori) chicks to determine the growth rate of long bones and to establish radiographic standards for assessing skeletal maturity. The growth rates of the tarsometatarsus and tibiotarsus in the bustard species investigated were similar to those in domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus) and some long-legged avian species. Maturation of long bones occurred earlier in houbara bustards compared with rufous-crested, white-bellied and kori bustards.  相似文献
