Biomass or energy wood harvesting can be integrated with conventional log harvesting (saw log or pulpwood production) to allow more cost-effective energy wood supply. The efficiency of an integrated energy wood harvesting system was evaluated and compared with conventional log harvesting in a 32-year-old Pinus radiata plantation (radiata pine) located in south-west Western Australia. The harvesting system consisted of a harvester and a forwarder. The study included two treatments: a conventional log-harvesting operation where merchantable sawlogs and pulp logs were produced at the stump by the harvester and extracted by the forwarder; and an integrated energy wood operation where the harvester produced sawlogs, pulp logs and energy wood at the stump that were extracted by the forwarder. In the integrated energy wood harvesting plot, 37 m3 ha?1 of energy wood was extracted in addition to the sawlog and pulp log volumes. Extracting the additional energy wood reduced the productivity of the forwarder and increased the cost of extraction (AU$2.7?m?3) compared with the control plot (AU$2.2?m?3). Harvesting system cost was not significantly impacted, with a cost of AU$3.18?m?3 in the control plot and AU$3.23?m?3 in the integrated energy wood harvesting plot. Diameter at breast height (DBH) was a significant factor influencing the working time of the harvester, whereas load volume, extraction distance and extraction type (sawlog, pulp logs, and pulp log/energy wood) significantly impacted forwarding time. Increasing DBH resulted in longer working cycles for the harvester. Heavier loads and longer forwarding distances increased forwarding cycle time, while extracting sawlogs was least expensive and energy wood extraction was the most expensive. The marginal cost of the energy wood was approximately AU$10.2?m?3 (AU$7.0 extraction and AU$3.2 harvesting), which is about double the cost of the sawlogs. Additional material recovered in the integrated energy wood plot resulted in less residual residues on the plot (103.2 green metric tonnes per hectare [GMt ha?1]) than the control plot (144.2 GMt ha?1). 相似文献

Stress model of a wood fibre in relation to collapse 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
T. C. Innes 《Wood Science and Technology》1995,29(5):363-376
A wood fibre cell from a Tasmanian Eucalypt is typically cylindrical in shape with a length to diameter ratio of approximately 501. Early in the process of seasoning for solid timber, when the fibre lumens are still saturated, internal tension within a fibre can rise to a value high enough to cause it to physically flatten, or collapse. A stress model of a fibre cell has been developed which predicts the stress and strain distributions within the fibre wall as a function of temperature, moisture content, and fibre wall strength properties and size in the early stages of drying. This model will be used together with measurement of the behaviour of collapse prone timbers to determine conditions which will avoid collapse during seasoning. The author is pleased to acknowledge the assistance of Emeritus Professor A. Of considerable importance and a principal goal in business is the creation of customer satisfaction. Evalu- ation of end user preferences for producers of particleboard and medium density fiberboard (MDF) requires indices for the assessment of markets and modification of product quality. However, only sporadic research has been carried out in this field. Therefore, the goal of this survey was to identify indices with respect to the points of view of: 1) consumers in order to select particleboard and MDF, 2) suppliers in order to consider production strategies, improve product quality, improve competitive ability of domestic producers in the market and help industry to be more customer oriented. This survey consisted of two stages. In the first stage, factors affecting customer preferences in the selection of particleboard and MDF were determined using a Delphi method, with the help of experts and a group of principal users of these prod- ucts. Then these factors were categorized in three groups: qualitative, technical and technological and marketing factors. Furthermore, questionnaires were prepared and distributed among consumers and responses evaluated and weighted by using an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) using expert choice software. Our results show that at both stages, the consistency ratio was less than 0.1, indicating that all results and judgments were stable and acceptable. The results obtained from questionnaires about particleboard rank the priorities for factors in the selection by consumers as follows: nail and screw holding ability, homogeneity in structure, edge strength of panel, durability and bending strength. The most important factors for MDF were machinability of panels, homogeneity in structure, nail and screw holding ability, edge strength of panel, durability and bending strength. 相似文献

An extremely fragmented timber supply, high harvesting costs, low profitability, high subsidies and insufficient competitiveness
characterise forest enterprises in Switzerland. In a case study using a forest district in the state of Solothurn as an example,
it was sought to identify strengths and weaknesses of wood production and to formulate possible improvement opportunities.
The results indicate that there is considerable potential for industry rationalisation. The greatest handicaps are the small
sized forest holdings, excessive numbers of staff, insufficient use of modern harvesting technology and costly business administration.
The most eminent of the proposed improvement measures are those which aim to increase concentration of timber supplies and
reduce production costs. These include greater centralising of timber sales as well as planning and steering of production,
making full use of modern harvesting systems, reducing transaction costs, supporting administration, planning and steering
of wood production with modern information technology and reducing input on stand tending. In principle, amelioration can
be best achieved by close cooperation with neighbours or even merger of enterprises. Consequently, there is a need for related
business tasks to be combined in functions. The paramount prerequisite for success is the willingness and readiness of all
affected stakeholders to make changes. The situation described is typical for Swiss forestry and the proposed solutions could
well be used as models for a wide range of Swiss forest districts. 相似文献

Live fences as tools for biodiversity conservation: a study case with birds and plants 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Live fences may act as tools for biodiversity conservation by providing habitat for native species and increasing connectivity
in the landscape. We studied the influence of live fence characteristics on species richness and fence use by birds by examining
both local and landscape factors. We studied three types of live fences: planted fences of a native tree, planted fences of
an exotic, and spontaneous. They were either connected to forest fragments or isolated, and were all within a pasture matrix.
Spontaneous and planted live fences maintain a diverse plant (77 shrub and tree species) and bird communities (98 species).
Fence types strongly differed in vegetation composition and structure. We found that by analyzing each fence characteristic
independently, there was no difference in bird richness or abundance. However, there was a significant correlation when plant
richness, structure, and connectivity were analyzed together. This could be the result of some variables counterbalancing
each other. Birds used fences for a variety of purposes including foraging, breeding, and moving across the landscape. Native
birds and plants used live fences as habitat and refuge in a landscape where large forest tracts have been lost for decades.
Live fences in conjunction with small forest fragments maintain a diverse array of plant and birds species that are a subsample
of the species originally found in the landscape before extensive deforestation. We recommend the establishment of live fences,
allowing growth of spontaneous understory. 相似文献

Common property rights have a long tradition in the Italian Alps, dating back to the Middle Ages, when alpine village communities managed common forests. On these properties, in accordance with rules aimed at regulating the collective use of resources, shareholders have the right of common use of the land. As many mountainous areas still rely on firewood for the heating of homes, the right to gather firewood from common forests is the most important common property right. In the last few decades, renewable bio-energy production based on forest woody biomass has undergone significant development. In Italy, in communities where the right to gather wood still has economic, social, and cultural relevance, decision makers and community members have a different vision about the use of firewood. This paper focuses on this issue by presenting a case study located in the Italian Eastern Alps, characterised by a historical tradition of common property management. In order to define the optimal strategy to manage the common forests, taking into consideration the local community’s needs, a semi-structured questionnaire was submitted to the administrators of the common forests and to the shareholders. Different scenarios of wood use were developed to support managers and decision makers in identifying on-going trends in firewood demand. The results show that the economic scenario for the development of the bio-energy supply chain cannot be reconciled with the historical tradition and social needs. 相似文献

This paper attempts to contribute to the forestry valuation literature by providing a template for executing ex ante cost–benefit analyses of large-scale temperate plantation forestry programmes, taking the Irish Government's Forestry Plan as an example. An ex ante assessment of the social efficiency of the Plan is undertaken and, in doing so, a range of externalities is examined using, inter alia, contingent valuation and production function approaches. The appropriate magnitude of subvention of the Plan is also examined. The study demonstrates how large-scale forestry programmes and their external effects, both positive and negative, can be evaluated. In so doing, it provides insights into the methodological difficulties and solutions for assessing the social efficiency of large-scale environmental projects and the appropriate level of their subsidisation. 相似文献

Which forest management regimes best achieve the dual objectives of high sustained timber yield and high carbon storage, including the carbon stored in soil and wood products? A mechanistic forest ecosystem simulator, which couples carbon, nitrogen and water (Edinburgh Forest Model), was calibrated to mimic the growth of a pine plantation in a Scottish climate. The model was then run to equilibrium (1) as an undisturbed forest, (2) removing 2.5, 10, 20 or 40% of the woody biomass each year (3) removing 50% of the woody biomass every 20 years, and (4) clear-felling and replanting every 60 years as in conventional plantations in this climate. More carbon was stored in the undisturbed forest (35.2 kg C m(-2)) than in any regime in which wood was harvested. Plantation management gave moderate carbon storage (14.3 kg C m(-2)) and timber yield (15.6 m(3) ha(-1) year(-1)). Notably, annual removal of 10 or 20% of woody biomass per year gave both a high timber yield (25 m(3) ha(-1) year(-1)) and high carbon storage (20 to 24 kg C m(-2)). The efficiency of the latter regimes could be attributed (in the model) to high light interception and net primary productivity, but less evapotranspiration and summer water stress than in the undisturbed forest, high litter input to the soil giving high soil carbon and N(2) fixation, low maintenance respiration and low N leaching owing to soil mineral pool depletion. We conclude that there is no simple inverse relationship between the amount of timber harvested from a forest and the amount of carbon stored. Management regimes that maintain a continuous canopy cover and mimic, to some extent, regular natural forest disturbance are likely to achieve the best combination of high wood yield and carbon storage. 相似文献

This study compares a number of coupled heat and mass transfer models and presents numerical comparisons of phenomenological
coefficients between the four models (Stanish, Perre, Pang, and Avramidis) that are most frequently used in the literature
to describe wood-drying processes. The USDA sorption isotherm, the Hailwood-Horrobin model, was adopted to calculate the relations
between moisture content in wood and water vapor pressure at any temperature. Due to different assumptions about the driving
forces of heat and mass transfer, coefficients in each model represent different values for moisture content and temperature
and are closely related to each other. In the case of isothermal mass transfer, the moisture diffusion coefficient in the
transverse directions from the Stanish and Pang models increased with decreasing moisture content. This contradicts the Avramidis
and Perre models and numerous experimental results. Thermal diffusion effects on the drying process may not be predominant
because the nonisothermal state is relatively short. Therefore, the Perre model, which does not consider the thermal diffusion
effect, has been used successfully in the drying simulation. However, it may be erroneous in certain cases when the nonisothermal
state prevails over the system, such as building physics. The Pang model cannot explain the phenomena of thermal diffusion
and moisture thermodiffusion. It might be reasonable to modify the thermal diffusion of the Avramidis model, which is lower
than that of the Stanish model. The apparent heat diffusivity was higher than the true heat diffusivity. 相似文献

The influence of a commercial laccase on the grafting of 4-chloro-2-methoxyphenol, a model compound, onto Eucalyptus globulus sapwood was evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The grafting was carried out on extracted and non-extracted wood samples. The extraction procedure modified the surface composition due to extractives removal but with high data dispersion. The laccase-mediated grafting of the chlorophenol was demonstrated by the decrease in O/C ratio and the presence of Cl in wood surface after the enzymatic wood treatment. Laccase seemed to be adsorbed suggesting a possible competition between adsorption and grafting processes. The extractive compounds have no effect on the enzymatic grafting since similar Cl amount was analyzed in extracted and non-extracted wood. This enzymatic grafting methodology opens up new possibilities for wood surface modification in order to obtain new wood products with sustainable technologies and mild conditions. 相似文献

This paper addresses the processes and investment evaluation of utilizing available dendromass in an easy and close-to-nature way under Central European conditions in Slovakia. Wood of the European aspen (Populus tremula L.) that has generally been considered of little economic value was efficiently used as a growth medium for the oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq.) P. Kumm.). The production of the fruiting bodies of this mushroom were evaluated for 5 years under natural forest conditions. The evaluation focused solely on aspen wood, specifically, the most valuable part – the trunk. The investment assessment revealed the high economic value of the fruiting bodies of the oyster mushroom inoculated into aspen wood blocks for the period of five years. In particular, the results of the net present value (NPV?=?347.78 €/m3) as well as the profitability index (PI?=?1.63) and discounted payback period (DPP ≈ 2 years and 8 months) point to the high profitability of such a project under the given conditions. The results could be helpful and inspiring for forest and garden owners when deciding how to utilize low-value waste dendromass, low-quality aspen wood and other tree species in small-scale forest management. 相似文献

With their widespread utilization, cut-to-length harvesters have become a major source of ‘‘big data' for forest management as they constantly capture, and provide a daily flow of, information on log production and assortment over large operational areas. Harvester data afford the calculation of the total log length between the stump and the last cut but not the total height of trees. They also contain the length and end diameters of individual logs but not always the diameter at breast height overbark(DBHOB) of harvested stems largely because of time lapse, operating and processing issues and other system deficiencies. Even when DBHOB is extracted from harvester data, errors and/or bias of the machine measurements due to the variation in the stump height of harvested stems from that specified for the harvester head prior to harvesting and diameter measurement errors may need to be corrected. This study developed(1) a system of equations for estimating DBHOB of trees from diameter overbark(DOB) measured by a harvester head at any height up to 3 m above ground level and(2) an equation to predict the total height of harvested stems in P. radiata plantations from harvester data. To generate the data required for this purpose, cut-to-length simulations of more than 3000 trees with detailed taper measurements were carried out in the computer using the cutting patterns extracted from the harvester data and stump height survey data from clearfall operations. The equation predicted total tree height from DBHOB, total log length and the small end diameter of the top log. Prediction accuracy for total tree height was evaluated both globally over the entire data space and locally within partitioned subspaces through benchmarking statistics. These statistics were better than that of the conventional height-diameter equations for P. radiata found in the literature, even when they incorporated stand age and the average height and diameter of dominant trees in the stand as predictors. So this equation when used with harvester data would outperform the conventional equations in tree height prediction. Tree and stand reconstructions of the harvested forest is the necessary first step to provide the essential link of harvester data to conventional inventory, remote sensing imagery and Li DAR data. The equations developed in this study will provide such a linkage for the most effective combined use of harvester data in predicting the attributes of individual trees, stands and forests, and product recovery for the management and planning of P. radiata plantations in New South Wales, Australia. 相似文献

This paper examines interactive change and adaptation of human and natural systems in two pioneer forest settlements in the Philippines. The forest ecosystem was converted by logging, further resource extraction by settlers, and cultivation — factors usually associated with systems degradation. Natural succession, however, was rapid because of high rainfall and abundant forest seed stocks; and because of high rainfall, weeds, insect pests, and poor soil — annual cereal and cash cropping was not profitable or sustainable and farmers turned to root and mixed perennial cropping. This naturally developing, more sustainable agroforestry was initially financed by boom-and-bust incomes from small scale logging and charcoal making, and took place in spite of the settlers' formation of factions and an us before them attitude towards resource use. 相似文献

Information on stem quality of standing (broadleaf) timber is of great importance to the forestry sector to help optimise harvesting and marketing strategies. Manual assessment of such quality parameters in standing trees is extremely difficult, time consuming and costly. The objectives of this study were therefore to assess stem quality parameters such as taper, lean and sweep in ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) stands, during leaves-on and leaves-off conditions, using terrestrial laser scanning technology, and to compare the estimated parameters with manually measured values in a mature and young stand. Diameter estimation was more accurate during the leaves-off condition in both stands, resulting in taper estimates that were closer to the manually obtained values as well. However, in general, the taper values did not match those obtained manually very closely. Given that the sample trees were chosen deliberately to include noticeable defects such as non-circularity, bending, swellings, knots resulting from the removal of branches and multiple leaders, this is not surprising. It probably is the case that the scanned data capture these defects more accurately than the manually collected data, especially when multi-scan data are used. 相似文献

Second-generation biofuels are often seen as essential element in the future bioeconomy strategy. Countries with extensive forest resources such as Norway often view wood as preferred bio-feedstock, yet the effects of wood demand on assortments of harvested wood and other wood-based industries are unclear. Focusing on the importance of feedstock choice, we analyse the impacts of establishing a second-generation medium-scale biofuel plant in Norway. For the analysis, a dynamic forest sector model where the choice of tree species, wood assortments, production of bioenergy, and forest industry products are explicitly included, was applied. We find the optimal biofuel feedstock mix to be dominated by softwood chips from pulpwood comprising 48% of total biomass inputs in 2030 and increasing to 67% by 2055, followed by hardwood chips from birch, comprising initially 34% of total biomass inputs and 16% by 2055. The proportion of harvest residues remained constant at about 18% over time and roundwood was not used at all for biofuel production. Despite the additional demand for chips, the single medium-scale biofuel plant will have only minor effects on existing forest industries and harvests in Norway, as the domestic impact is dampened by changes in foreign trade flows, especially of chips. 相似文献

Pulse-labelling of trees with stable or radioactive carbon (C) isotopes offers the unique opportunity to trace the fate of labelled CO(2) into the tree and its release to the soil and the atmosphere. Thus, pulse-labelling enables the quantification of C partitioning in forests and the assessment of the role of partitioning in tree growth, resource acquisition and C sequestration. However, this is associated with challenges as regards the choice of a tracer, the methods of tracing labelled C in tree and soil compartments and the quantitative analysis of C dynamics. Based on data from 47 studies, the rate of transfer differs between broadleaved and coniferous species and decreases as temperature and soil water content decrease. Labelled C is rapidly transferred belowground-within a few days or less-and this transfer is slowed down by drought. Half-lives of labelled C in phloem sap (transfer pool) and in mature leaves (source organs) are short, while those of sink organs (growing tissues, seasonal storage) are longer. (13)C measurements in respiratory efflux at high temporal resolution provide the best estimate of the mean residence times of C in respiratory substrate pools, and the best basis for compartmental modelling. Seasonal C dynamics and allocation patterns indicate that sink strength variations are important drivers for C fluxes. We propose a conceptual model for temperate and boreal trees, which considers the use of recently assimilated C versus stored C. We recommend best practices for designing and analysing pulse-labelling experiments, and identify several topics which we consider of prime importance for future research on C allocation in trees: (i) whole-tree C source-sink relations, (ii) C allocation to secondary metabolism, (iii) responses to environmental change, (iv) effects of seasonality versus phenology in and across biomes, and (v) carbon-nitrogen interactions. Substantial progress is expected from emerging technologies, but the largest challenge remains to carry out in situ whole-tree labelling experiments on mature trees to improve our understanding of the environmental and physiological controls on C allocation. 相似文献
