The Catarina scallop Argopecten ventricosus is a highly valued resource. Although its hatchery spat production has already been reported, the effects of initial larval stocking density have never been reported for production purposes. This study evaluates A. ventricosus growth and survival in triplicate using three stocking densities: low (LD; 2 larvae mL?1), medium (MD; 4 larvae mL?1), and high (HD; 6 larvae mL?1). Three-day old larvae were reared in 18-L plastic carboy at 25.6?±?0.5 °C and fed with a microalgal blend of Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans (1:1 cell number ratio) for 7 days, equivalent to 10 post-fertilization days (PFD). Higher specific growth rate was recorded at LD (15.8?±?0.2%) after 8 PFD of culture compared to MD (1.6?±?0.5%) and HD (4.1?±?1.8%) densities. The least time required for 60% of the larvae to reach the pediveliger stage was recorded at LD condition (10 PFD). Higher survival was recorded at HD (58.8?±?3.1%) at 8 PFD compared to MD (53.5?±?3.1%) and LD (43.9?±?3.0%). After 8 PFD, stocking density was highly related to larval growth and survival. To increase production and growth, and reduce the time required to reach pediveliger stage, stocking density should start with 6 larvae mL?1 and be reduced to 2 larvae mL?1 at 7 PFD.

The initial ingestion age and size and the digestive index of Argopecten ventricosus-circularis Sowerby II, 1842 veliger larvae were investigated using epifluorescence microscopy. Ten microalgae were tested as feed during the first 7 days of life at this stage. Results of ingestion experiments showed there was a significant positive correlation between the smaller geometric dimension of the algae and the larval age and size of initial ingestion. Out of the 10 species offered, only Nannochloris oculata (NANO), Isochrysis galbana (TISO), Monochrysis lutheri (MONO), Chaetoceros muelleri (CM), Chaetoceros calcitrans (CC), Thalassiosira pseudonana clone 3H (3H), and Phaeodactylum tricornutum (PHT) were ingested. No ingestion was observed in Thalassiosira pseudonana clone s78 (S78), Tetraselmis suecica (TETRA) and Dunaliella tertiolecta (DUN) during the experiment. The digestion index of the larvae, defined as the degree of algal digestion at the third hour after ingestion, increased with larval age and size with TISO and MONO. With CC, 3H and CM, the digestion index was lower and no digestion was observed with NANO and PHT. 相似文献

Abstract. During the years of 1989 and 1990, the yield of the commercial fishery for the catarina scallop, Argopecten circularis (Sowerby, 1835), in Magdalena Bay, was 750 million organisms (5186t of muscles), which were gathered by diving at 12–30m depth. This production is the largest registered to date and accounted for 53% of the total Mexican scallop production since 1981. The formation of large beds in that area is a sporadic phenomenon which needs to be studied. In the present paper, a model to explain the formation of such beds is drawn, in which the bentho-pelagic red crab, Pleuroncodes planipes (Stimpson, 1860), plays a role as primary substrate for the recruitment of the spat and simultaneously is the active transporter of juveniles into the Bay during the winter months of cold years. Apparently exploitable beds are formed only when temperatures of 16°C or lower, are registered deep inside the Bay for at least 2 months. Relating these findings with short and long-term temperature fluctuations, it seems possible to predict future exploitable stocks in the area. 相似文献

Growth and survival of the Catarina scallop, Argopecten circularis (Sowerby), were determined in relation to stocking density and length of culture period. Data were analysed by means of the von Bertalanffy growth equation and the weight-length allometric relationship. A mortality equation was empirically derived from the experimental data. Stocking density significantly affected both growth (P<0.05) and mortality parameters (P<0.01). The coefficients for the weight-length relationship. however, were not affected by stocking density. Mortality was highly variable, both during the culture period and between the different stocking densities. Two mortality patterns were identified. One was associated with post-spawning mortality and lower stocking rates. The other occurred at high densities where increased temperatures and overstocking provoked high mortalities and extremely divergent survival responses. The results showed that mortality, rather than growth, reflects more accurately the effects of density, and that better survival is not necessarily produced by stocking at the lowest rate. 相似文献

A bioeconomic analysis was made to help define management strategies of stocking density and length of culture period for the scallop Argopecten circularis (Sowerby). The internal rate of return (IRR) was used as a criterion for maximizing profit at different plant sizes. Analyses were made at low and high stocking rates. For plant sizes larger than 1.2 million juveniles, using high densities improved the IRR but had higher risk because of critical inconsistencies in survival. High sensitivity of the IRR to stocking density and culture period required these variables to be strictly controlled to maximize the IRR. The sensitivity of IRR to changes of ± 5% in the values of the parameters of the bioeconomic model was found to be significantly different ( P < 0.01) between plant sizes. The IRR was particularly sensitive to the maximum size attainable by the organisms, mortality, sale price and cost of equipment for grow-out. The importance of considering uncertainty in the parameter estimates when projecting a pilot plant is addressed. 相似文献

We evaluated recruitment of larvae of catarina scallop, Argopecten ventricosus, in the area of Puerto Peñasco, NE Gulf of California. We moored artificial collectors in six sites from June 2007 to August 2008 and replaced them every 2 months. We used monthly (July 2002–September 2011) sea surface temperature (SST, °C) and surface chlorophyll‐ a concentration (SSChl, mg m ?3) Aqua/MODIS satellite data to describe seasonal environmental behaviour study area. Also, we recorded bottom temperature at each site every 4 h, and every 2 months measured sea surface salinity, temperature and dissolved oxygen. We used a repeated measures anova to evaluate differences in the number of recruited spat between main factors, and analysed the presence of multimodal spat shell size frequency distributions. Overall, spat recruitment was negatively correlated with seawater temperature and showed higher spat recruitment abundances throughout winter, which is the season with the highest surface chlorophyll a concentration. We estimated multimodal shell size frequency distributions characterized by more than one modal size. The natural collection of A. ventricosus spat on artificial collectors in the area can be successfully performed over a protracted period (November–December to May–June). Our results extend the area where collection of A. ventricosus spat can be successful. 相似文献

In bivalve aquaculture, selecting suitable probiotic treatments can be crucial for improving hatchery‐rearing of larvae and juveniles. We assessed the potential of five bacterial strains, previously selected in vitro, to improve survival, growth and resistance of catarina scallop Argopecten ventricosus during early and late larval and juvenile developmental stages, as well as during exposure to the pathogen Vibrio alginolyticus. Hatchery‐reared larvae and juveniles were treated with eight treatments of single or combined strains of Bacillus and Lactobacillus at 1 × 10 6 CFU mL ?1 every 48 h for 9 days (larvae) and 21 days (juveniles). Compared with the control, significantly higher survival and growth in size and weight of early veliger larvae occurred with the antibiotic and the RL5 ( Lactobacillus graminis) treatments. Significantly enhanced settlement of pediveliger larvae occurred with a different probiotic strain, the mix of Lactobacillus and Bacillus (MIX‐LB), while higher survival and growth of early juveniles occurred with C3 ( Lactobacillus plantarum). The mix of Bacillus (MIX‐B) significantly increased survival of juveniles from V. alginolyticus after 120‐h infection, consistent with maximum activity of superoxide dismutase enzyme. In contrast, all untreated and infected scallops died by 96 h. The three Bacillus strains performed poorly when used as single treatments and when given to early developing larvae. Our results indicate that the action mechanism of probiotic strains is stage specific and strain specific, generating different responses by the host, including improved survival and growth (likely from better nutrient assimilation) and higher resistance against pathogens (possibly from strengthening the immune system). 相似文献

Environmental factors are known to modify the life history of marine ectotherms. In a 16‐month laboratory experiment, we investigated the influence of temperature and presence of predators on life‐history parameters including shell growth, survival and the energy investment in reproduction and body mass of the short‐lived (2–3 years) scallop Argopecten ventricosus. In parallel, A. ventricosus was maintained in the field at the Pacific coast of Baja California, México, to compare growth, survival and reproductive effort under natural conditions. For the laboratory treatments, scallops were reared at simulated field temperatures (SFT), 5 °C above SFT and in the presence of predators. Elevated water temperatures caused higher growth and gonad production, although at the cost of increased mortality. Presence of predators induced energy allocation to muscle rather than gonad growth, deferred spawning and extended survival. Field scallops exhibited higher growth, higher reproductive investment and were able to reproduce twice, whereas all laboratory scallops died after the first spawning. The natural variability of environmental parameters such as food and temperature may thus support optimal growth in the field, and when animals are protected from predators, reproduction in the second year of life. 相似文献

This study examined the effects of density and growing season on growth and survival of juvenile lion's paw scallops ( Nodipecten subnodosus) in Estero San Buto, a mangrove channel in Bahía Magdalena, Mexico. Scallops were kept in plastic mesh bags in oyster trays at three population densities (500, 1000 and 2000 organisms per tray, or low medium and high density respectively) over a period of 2 months from October to December 2001 and from February to April 2002. Growth (shell height increment) was measured every 7–12 days and mortality was evaluated at the end of the experiment (dead shell count). Overall growth was fast (0.24–0.38 mm day ?1) in comparison with other pectinids. Significant differences were found for both, density and season, with faster growth occurring at lower densities and during the fall season when the water temperature was higher. Mortality was low (0.5–3.0% 60 day ?1) except for the high‐density treatment in the fall (44% 60 day ?1). Crowding together with high water temperatures and increased metabolic oxygen demand of the scallops and possibly competition for food were the probable reasons for this high mortality. Overall, mortality was lower in the spring, when temperatures were lower, O 2 values were higher and food was more abundant. 相似文献

Genetic diversity and correlation analysis between single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of myostatin ( MSTN) gene and the growth traits were performed in Argopecten irradians. Around 279 individuals from three A. irradians populations were screened for the polymorphic sites of the MSTN gene. Two SNPs were found: T910G and G1162A. The observed heterozygosity of the two SNPs ranged from 0.1310 to 0.3299, whereas the expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.1436 to 0.2973. The values of D′ and r2 of linkage disequilibrium (LD) ranged from 0.475 to 1.0 and 0.052 to 0.174 respectively. Association analysis shows that individuals with genotype TT and TG of locus W4 had significantly higher adductor muscle mass than that with genotype GG in population CA ( P < 0.05). Individuals with genotype AA of locus W5 had significantly higher body mass, soft‐tissue mass, adductor muscle mass, shell width and shell mass than those of other genotypes in population RZ ( P < 0.05). The two SNPs found in our study can be used for molecule marker‐assisted breeding of A. irradians. 相似文献

This work describes for the first time the embryonic development of the tropical scallop Nodipecten nodosus. Larval and post‐larval growth parameters and some characteristics of larvae shell morphology were also ascertained. The larvae were obtained from the induced spawning of a group of broodstocks under controlled laboratory conditions. After fertilization, larval cultivation was carried out in conical tanks at a temperature of 26–27 °C. Larval density was controlled as a function of larval growth to give 10, 5 and 3 larvae mL ?1 from days 1, 3 and 8 respectively. The larvae were nourished with a 1:1 mix of Isochrysis galbana (clone T‐ISO) and Chaetoceros gracilis in portions varying between 30 000 and 70 000 cells mL ?1. Expulsion of polar groups was observed 5 and 15 min after fertilization, whereas the first cellular division occurred after 30 min. The first gastrule ciliates and trocophore larvae were noted after 8 and 18 h had elapsed, respectively, whereas prodissoconch I, or D‐larvae, were discerned after 26 h. Subsequently, larvae with prodissoconch II or veliger‐conch appeared at 30 h. Larval development continued for 10–12 days, followed by metamorphosis, at an approximate length of 208–230 µm. The growth of the post‐larvae was evaluated for 9 days. Larval and post‐larval growth corresponded to the linear equations L = 71.85 + 10.85 t, r2 = 0.99, and L = 44.09 + 17.81 t, r2 = 0.94 respectively. Juvenile northern Chilean scallops of 937±55 μm shell height were exposed to five different concentrations of chloramphenicol (CHL) (5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 μg mL −1), plus a control without antibiotics. To determine the effect of CHL on the accompanying microflora, the number of colony-forming units (CFU) that grew on TGE culture medium was counted in the seawater of containers with juveniles, and in containers with microalgae used as food. Both were exposed to the same concentrations of CHL. The growth rates of juveniles treated with CHL and the control without antibiotic showed highly significant differences ( P =0.0001). The growth rate was inversely proportional to the CHL concentration. The control sample presented the highest growth rate (84.4±14.3 μm day −1), followed by the sample treated with 5 μg mL −1 (64.2±14.3 μm day −1). The survival in the control and in the treated samples with 5–50 μg mL −1 was rather high, with a mean value of 95%. Only the sample treated with 100 μg mL −1 had a low survival (36.7%). The CFU count was larger in the containers with juveniles, when compared with the ones with food. The CFU count tended to decrease with increasing CHL concentration in the juveniles. 相似文献

The administration of antimicrobials to control bacterial pathologies in Chilean scallop hatcheries is a frequent practice, but their effects on these cultures remained unknown. This study was undertaken to obtain information on the effect of the administration of florfenicol and oxytetracycline on the growth, survival and bacterial content of scallop larvae under farming conditions. Florfenicol‐treated cultures exhibited high survival rates (44% after 17 days of culture), whereas cultures not treated or treated with oxytetracycline collapsed after 11 days of culture. Surprisingly, no significant differences in the heterotrophic (Tukey test; P = 0.226) and Vibrio (Tukey test; P = 0.666) concentrations between the oxytetracycline‐treated and untreated larval cultures were observed. Otherwise, florfenicol administered directly into rearing tanks produced significantly higher larval growth (Tukey test; P = 0.0001) and survival (Tukey test; P = 0.011) than bath treatment. When 2 and 4 mg L ?1 of florfenicol were compared, no significant differences in growth ( t‐test; P = 0.4596) and survival (Tukey test; P = 0.057) were observed, suggesting that a concentration of 2 mg L ?1 is sufficient to ensure larval production. The present results demonstrate the efficacy of florfenicol‐based therapy to increase larval survival and growth at commercial scale and prompt the necessity to standardize its use in Chilean scallop hatcheries. 相似文献

The fingerling‐rearing experiment of the threatened catfish, Mystus cavasius was carried out at different stocking densities in earthen nursery ponds. Twelve‐day‐old fry were stocked at 200 000 ha ?1 in treatment‐1 (T 1), 250 000 ha ?1 in treatment‐2 (T 2) and 300 000 ha ?1 in treatment‐3 (T 3) respectively. The mean length and weight of fry at stocking was 1.24 ± 0.25 cm and 0.11 ± 0.04 g respectively. Fry in all the experimental ponds were supplemented with SABINCO nursery feed for the first 14 days and starter‐I feed for days 15–56. The physico‐chemical parameters and plankton population of pond water were within the suitable level for fish culture. Growth in terms of final weight, final length, weight gain, length gain and specific growth rate and survival of fingerlings were significantly higher in T 1 than those in T 2 and T 3. Feed conversion rate was significantly lower in T 1 followed by T 2 and T 3 in that order. Significantly higher number of fingerlings was produced in T 3 than that in T 2 and T 1. Even then, consistently higher net benefits were obtained from T 1 than those from T 3 and T 2. Among the treatments evaluated, 200 000 fry ha ?1 was the best stocking density considering the highest growth, production and net benefits of fingerlings of M. cavasius in nursery ponds. 相似文献

The influence of algal diet on survival, growth and development of hatchery reared flat oyster, Ostrea angasi, larvae was investigated in a series of uni, binary and ternary algal diet trials. Early stage larvae (140–230 μm shell length) generally grew faster than late‐stage larvae (230–340 μm shell length) when fed unialgal diets. Of the 24 algal diets evaluated, larvae fed unialgal diets of Isochrysis sp. (T. Iso), Nannochloropsis oculata, Tetraselmis chuii or Pavlova lutheri; a binary diet of T. chuii+T. Iso; or ternary diets of T. chuii+T. Iso combined with P. lutheri or N. oculata had the greatest larval growth, survival, development and metamorphosis, in the respective trials. The correlation between growth rate and spat produced in late‐stage larvae was stronger when fed unialgal diets ( r = 0.75) than when larvae were fed either binary or ternary diets ( r = 0.44 and r = 0.45 respectively). Marked differences in proportion of spat produced (24 h post metamorphosis) were evident among diets producing similar growth rates. For hatchery production of O. angasi larvae, ternary diets of T. chuii+T. Iso combined with either P. lutheri or N. oculata were the best diets to maximize larval growth rate, development and survival 24 h post metamorphosis. 相似文献

Scallop Pecten maximus spat (1.3–2.1 mm shell height) from different settlement groups were transferred from hatchery to land‐based nursery at different ages and sizes. Chemical content, growth and survival were compared at transfer time and after 1 and 8 weeks of nursery growth. Growth was lowest and mortality highest in the first week after transfer. Mean shell height growth was 21.5–71.4 μm day ?1 and ash‐free dry weight (AFDW) growth ?2.7 to 10.3 μg day ?1. Spat from the first settlement group attained a larger size and weight than spat from larvae settled 3 days later, but had a lower daily growth rate (%). Keeping the late‐settled spat a longer time in the hatchery to reach a bigger size before transfer seemed not to improve subsequent nursery growth. Survival showed a large variation with mean survival ranging from 32% to 74%. A substantial reduction in lipid content was found after transfer to the nursery. Sterol content at transfer was the only lipid class correlating with survival in the nursery. Based on the results, it is justified that spat groups of different settlement age are included in production of 15‐mm great scallop spat if they are transferred from the hatchery at the same age. 相似文献

The growth and survival of three size classes of wild caught western rock lobster, Panulirus cygnus (post-pueruli: mean 2.14 ± 0.07 g, 13.2 ± 0.1 mm CL; year 1: post-settlement juveniles, 57.1 ± 1.1 g, 38.7 ± 0.28 mm CL; and year 2 post-settlement juveniles, mean 138.2 ± 2.26 g, 51.9 ± 0.25 mm CL) were examined at combinations of two stocking densities (post-pueruli: 50 and 100 m − 2; year 1: 11 and 23 m − 2; year 2: 10 and 19 m − 2) and two shelter types (a novel rigid plastic mesh shelter or bricks) over a period of 6 months. Survival of lobsters held at the lower densities (90–95%) was significantly greater than for lobsters held at higher densities (post-pueruli = 78%, year 1 = 86%, year 2 = 88%). Post-pueruli survival was significantly higher in tanks with mesh shelters (91.7%) than brick shelters (75.8%) with a similar trend exhibited by year 1 and year 2 lobsters. Densities tested did not significantly affect lobster growth for any size class. Growth of post-pueruli was considerably higher in tanks with mesh shelters (641.7% weight gain; specific growth rate 1.07 BW day − 1) ( p < 0.05) but there was no difference in the growth of year 1 and year 2 lobsters between mesh and brick shelters. Feed intake (g pellet dry matter lobster − 1 day − 1) was not significantly different between densities. This study has shown that P. cygnus is well suited for aquaculture based on the collection and ongrowing of wild caught pueruli, as this species exhibits good survival at high densities (up to 100 m − 2) without adverse effects on growth, and shows no captivity-related health problems. We recommend mesh shelters, with stocking densities of 50 m − 2 for post-pueruli and between 20 and 25 m − 2 for year 1 and year 2 juveniles, to maximise survival and production. 相似文献

An increased understanding of the general biology of Argopecten purpuratus (Lamarck) is necessary to produce successfully high quality larvae in hatcheries and to collect enough spat in situ for growth on long lines. In the present study, the reproductive cycles of two populations of A. purpuratus were examined, the Mejillones and Rinconada scallop banks, from 1989 to 1993. Calculation of the gonosomatic index and a complementary histological study of the gonad revealed differences between the two populations in their reproductive cycle as well as in the quantity of gamete emissions. The Rinconada population has a major spawning period occuring at the end of the year and lasting about three months. Minor spawnings also occur in early July to late September. In Mejillones individuals, only one major period of gametogenesis and spawning occurs. Gametogenesis begins in January and spawning occurs between February and March. This is followed by a period of quiescence lasting four to five weeks. These results suggest that the Mejillones individuals are a more appropriate source of genitors to be used for conditioning in hatcheries. Existing data on biometrics, particularly the dimensions of the adductor muscle, as well as enzyme polymorphism, suggest that the Rinconada population would be a more appropriate source of genitors to be used in future aquaculture attempts. 相似文献

This research examined the effect of initial stocking density and feeding regime on larval growth and survival of Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. Larval rearing trials were conducted in nine 50‐L tanks with different initial stocking densities combined with different feed rations (20 larvae/L with standard feed ration [LD], 80 larvae/L with standard feed ration [HD], and 80 larvae/L with four times the standard feed ration [HD+]). Larvae were stocked on 0 days posthatch (DPH) following hatching of the fertilized embryos. Larval total length (TL), survival rates, and final densities were observed on larval settlement (32 DPH) to evaluate larval rearing performance. At 32 DPH, there were no significant differences ( p > .05) in TL or survival rates between the LD (46.5 ± 17.0%) and HD+ (40.3 ± 9.4%). The TL and survival rate of HD (23.1 ± 3.5%) were significantly lower than that of LD and HD+ ( p < .05). However, the larval density of HD was significantly higher than that of LD ( p < .05). HD+ achieved the best larvae production (32.27 ± 7.51 larvae/L), supported by sufficient food source, high water exchange, and proper water quality management (routine siphoning, surface skimming).
