Abstract

Four small grain species, barley, oat, rye, and wheat were harvested at six growth stages to investigate their nutritive quality as a possible replacement for corn silage. Crude protein (CP), in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and lignin contents were measured on fresh and ensiled samples. The IVDMD, an estimate of forage ruminant digestibility, of all species generally decreased from the vegetative (765–854 g kg‐1) through the milk stage (505–662 g kg‐1) and then remained unchanged or increased slightly through hard dough with the exception of oats which often decreased during later stages of growth. The IVDMD of rye was usually lower than the other species from the milk to hard dough stage. The IVDMD of barley was generally higher than the other species at the soft and hard dough stages. The NDF, ADF, and lignin fractions usually increased from the vegetative to milk stages and remained unchanged or increased slightly through the hard dough stage. The ADF and lignin are negatively associated with forage digestibility while NDF values are negatively related to dry matter intake. The ADF of rye was generally higher than the other species at the milk and soft dough stages. Rye and barley contained more lignin than the other species from the heading through hard dough stage. Crude protein content generally decreased from the vegetative through milk stages and then leveled off or decreased slightly through the hard dough stage. Crude protein of oats was lower than other species at the vegetative stage, while rye generally contained more crude protein than the other species at the vegetative and boot stages. These data in combination with forage yield data reported in an associated paper suggest that small grains can offer a nutritious source of animal feed for farmers in the southeastern United States. Rye tended to stand out among the species at the early stages of growth (vegetative to boot) as a highly digestible green chop or grazing crop that is also high in protein. Barley and wheat stand out as excellent high yielding, nutritious silage choices at the soft dough stage.  相似文献

Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.) is a perennial forage legume that possesses beneficial properties in the context of sustainable agriculture. In order to initiate a pre-breeding programme, we have assembled a germplasm collection of O. viciifolia from many geographic regions, as well as a collection of Onobrychis species that might be crossed with O. viciifolia to improve its biological and agronomic properties. The objective of this study was to obtain DNA sequences from a representative sample of these accessions in order to characterise their genetic diversity and to assess the robustness of the Onobrychis taxonomy. Because of potential problems with copurification of tannins and polyphenols from Onobrychis leaf tissue, three methods for DNA extraction were assessed and the most appropriate one identified. DNA sequences were obtained for the nuclear internal transcribed spacer region and the trnH-psbA and trnT-trnL intergenic spacers of the chloroplast genome. Neighbour joining trees were constructed and accessions were assigned to operational taxonomic units. The results indicated that there is substantial genetic diversity among Onobrychis species. Redundancies in species nomenclature were identified, as well as possible overlap between some of the sections into which the Onobrychis genus has been divided. A genetic distinction was apparent between O. viciifolia accessions from western Europe and those from eastern Europe and Asia, reflecting a similar division based on agronomic properties. Recognition of these different though related germplasms will be valuable in the design of breeding programmes for the rational improvement of sainfoin as a forage crop for sustainable agriculture.  相似文献

Abstract

Macromineral composition of different forage species and soils and forage in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) and crude protein concentrations in three agricultural zones of Benue State were studied. The zones consisted of Tiv zone (Zone A), Igala zone (Zone B), and Idoma zone (Zone C), each of which was made up of three sites. Site I was Fulani cattle migration routes across the state, site II represented grazing sites within home proximity, and site III were grazing reserves. Grazing animals were followed and forages corresponding to that consumed by them, and the corresponding soil samples were collected during the peak of the dry season (December‐January) and analyzed for nutrient composition. Forage IVOMD ranged from 21% to 79%, with values obtained in grass being lowest due to pronounced overmaturity. Only 10% of forage samples (exclusively from grasses), showed protein levels below the critical value of 7%. Most forage samples, as well as their corresponding soil samples were sufficient in calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K) concentrations. Soil concentrations of Ca, Mg, and K were particularly high compared to critical requirements in all the zones studied. Approximately 94% and 76% of forages were deficient in phosphorus (P) and sodium (Na), respectively, and the deficiencies were similar in all classes of forage and sites of study for each of the zones investigated. Results of forage‐soil relationships indicated low and nonexisting correlations; therefore soil analyzes are not of great importance in the assessment of available macromineral supplies to grazing livestock. Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.) is a perennial forage legume that possesses beneficial properties in the context of sustainable agriculture. A germplasm collection of O. viciifolia was assembled from many geographic regions, as well as a collection of Onobrychis species that might be crossed with O. viciifolia to improve its biological and agronomic properties. The objective of the present study was to obtain cytological information for a broad range of O. viciifolia varieties and related species, in order to confirm and extend previous findings. The study set was 143 accessions of O. viciifolia as well as 34 accessions of 17 other species from the Onobrychis genus. Three of the O. viciifolia accessions were diploid (2n = 2x = 14) and the remainder tetraploid (2n = 4x = 28). Chromosomes were <5 μm in length. Among the other Onobrychis species, roughly half were found to be diploid and the other half tetraploid, with two species, O. arenaria (Kit.) DC. and O. alba subsp. laconica (Orph. ex Boiss.) Hayek, including a mixture of diploid and tetraploid accessions. The basic number of chromosomes was seven, except for O. aequidentata (Sm.) d’Urv. and O. crista-galli Lam., where it was eight. The 2C value for O. viciifolia was estimated at 2.5 pg. These cytological data will be valuable as part of a pre-breeding programme aimed at the eventual production of improved O. viciifolia varieties for use in sustainable agriculture.  相似文献

Information on different rangeland plants' nutritive values on different plant parts and for various habitats is important in rangelands management. Effects of different plant parts (stems and leaves) of the Jasminum fruticans L. plant species on forage quality indicators were investigated in two regions in 2015. Plant samples were collected from Sharlogh rangelands and cultivated in the Research and Education Center of Agricultural and Natural Resources (RECANR) in Iran with completely randomized design with three replications in each plant sample. The plant leaves and stems samples were oven-dried at 80°C for 24 hr, and then analyzed for crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), dry matter (DM), ether extract (EE), crude ash (CA), metabolizable energy (ME), and mineral elements, including calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P). Results showed that the forage quality indicators in different regions were statistically significant, except for the CA. Also, nutritive values differed significantly (p < 0.01) between different plant parts, except ME parameter. Results also indicated that J. fruticans due to its high tissue CP content is a valuable source of forage for livestock.  相似文献

Kura clover (Trifolium ambiguum M.B.) is a persistent perennial forage legume that produces high-quality herbage for grazing, but its response to potassium (K), an essential plant nutrient, is unknown. Our objective was to determine the effect of four dipotassium oxide (K2O) rates on forage yields and stands of Kura clover compared to birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). There was a significant linear response in Kura clover and alfalfa forage yields to K2O fertilization each year. Averaged over 4 years, Kura clover forage yield increased by 0.024 Mg ha–1 per kg of K2O applied, and the yield response was similar for alfalfa. Birdsfoot trefoil forage yield response to K2O fertilization was less than those of alfalfa and Kura clover. In the first 2 years after seeding, Kura clover forage yields were consistently less than for alfalfa at all rates of K2O fertilizer, but in subsequent years Kura clover yields were similar to or exceeded those of alfalfa. Final groundcover values, an estimate of stand density, of unfertilized (0 K2O rate) Kura clover, birdsfoot trefoil, and alfalfa were 86, 35, and 21%, respectively. Final groundcover of Kura clover and alfalfa was increased by K2O fertilization. We conclude that Kura clover has good persistence with low soil K fertility but stands and yields can be increased by fertilization.  相似文献

Abstract

Consideration of the harvest method and protein content of corn grain and forage may be important variables for estimating Economic Optimum Nitrogen (N) (EON) rates for corn. Corn grain yield, forage yield, grain protein and forage protein data from twenty five N response experiments conducted in Pennsylvania were analyzed to determine the effect of harvest method and a price adjustment based on grain and forage protein content on the EON rate. The value of the protein in this study was assumed to be that of substituting soybean meal in the ration for growing beef cattle or dairy cattle. There was no difference in the EON for corn harvested for grain compared to corn harvested for forage when the protein content was not considered. When price adjustments were made for the protein content of the grain and forage, the EON rates increased 10 kg/ha for grain and 22 kg/ha for forage. With the protein price adjustments, the EON was 14 kg/ha higher for forage than grain. These results support the recommendation for higher N rates for corn harvested for forage, where the protein value of the forage is considered, compared to corn harvested for grain. In situations where the amino acid composition of the grain is important, such as for poultry or swine, or where urea or anhydrous ammonia can be substituted in the ration for protein, it is unlikely that a higher EON level would result when protein content or quality is considered.  相似文献

Extensive germplasm resources are present in collections of Lotus corniculatus and L. uliginosus, two forage species that are valuable in situations where other legumes are not persistent. Naturalised populations in many regions are the primary gene pool for genetic improvement of these species and interspecific hybrids are an important source of variation for agronomic and forage quality traits. Although previous research has provided evidence that selection for optimal levels of condensed tannins and herbage productivity are feasible breeding objectives, less is known about correlations of condensed tannin with other parameters of nutritive value. A germplasm collection of 38 accessions in both species from 9 geographic regions was used as a data base to determine these correlations. Forage of each accession was sampled in two successive years from a field site in south-eastern Australia and analysed for condensed tannin, in vitro digestible dry matter, nitrogen, acid detergent fibre and neutral detergent fibre. In both species condensed tannin was negatively correlated with in vitro digestible dry matter and nitrogen. This result helped to identify potentially valuable accessions with low condensed tannin (<4% of dry weight) and high in vitro digestible dry matter (>70%). One of these was an interspecific hybrid of L. uliginosus and L. corniculatus, confirming the view that interspecific hybridization would be a valuable avenue for improvement of agronomic and forage quality characters in Lotus species.  相似文献

Abstract

A total of 71 forage samples were analyzed for trace mineral and crude protein concentrations in three Agricultural zones of Benue State, Nigeria. The zones consisted of the Northern, Eastern, and Central zones, each of which was made up of four Local Government Areas. In each Local Government Area, grazing animals were followed and forages corresponding to those consumed were collected during the peak of the wet season (June) and analyzed for the nutrient composition. Deficiencies were observed in copper (Cu) and cobalt (Co) concentrations in all classes of forage, and in forage Cu and zinc (Zn) in all Local Government Areas in the Northern zone. A higher (P<0.05) forage Cu concentration was observed in legumes compared to other classes of forage in the Eastern zone. Concentrations of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) were considered adequate and their contents were not affected (P>0.05) by class of forage or Local Government Areas. In the Eastern zone, the contents of selenium (Se) in grass and tree leaf hay were higher compared to leguminous forage, which in turn was higher compared to Se concentrations in crop wastes. Only about 18% of total forage samples showed protein concentrations below the critical value of 7%. Supplementation of Cu, Zn, and Co would seem to be necessary in the Northern zone, and to a lesser extent in the Eastern zone for optimum productivity of grazing animals.  相似文献

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the elemental composition of two plant fractions (leaves and stems) of several forage species in three sheep farms of the paramo in Colombia. The elemental composition of the forage species, and the relationship between soil chemistry and the elemental composition of the forages were also determined. Sampling periods corresponded to the end of the rainy season (May‐June 1987), and the middle end of the dry season (February 1988). Leaves were higher (P<0.05) than stems in the following: calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, molybdenum, crude protein, and IVOMD. Overall percentage of deficiencies were related to the requirements for sheep as follows: calcium (88%, 13%), phosphorus (50%, 27%), magnesium (85%, 41%), potassium (13%,3%), sodium (94%, 96%), iron (10%, 4%), copper (82%, 65%), manganese (7%, 0%), zinc (46%, 42%), cobalt (92%, 85%), selenium (77%, 65%), crude protein (45%, 8%) for stems and leaves, respectively.

Based on analyses, elemental, crude protein and IVOMD concentrations of forage species, tended to differ. Soil‐forage correlation coefficients of the same mineral for the rainy season were calcium (r = 0.81), magnesium (r = 0.89), potassium (r = 0.71), zinc (r = 0. 69). For the dry season, correlations were calcium (r = 0.61) and magnesium ( r = 0.58). Results indicated low correlation coefficients between most soil and forage elements, and that they are not of great value in assessing the elemental status of grazing sheep in the paramo.  相似文献

适宜草种的选择在退耕还草决策中起着重要作用, 依据牧草生物学特性和牧草与诸气象因子之间的关系确定牧草的适宜分布区间能够为退耕还草工作提供决策支持。该研究利用地理信息系统(Geographic Information System,GIS)和牧草生长适宜度模型相结合,采用模糊逻辑推理机制开发了退耕还草决策支持系统,用户可以查询到甘肃省任意一点的气象信息、土壤信息和草原类型,咨询到适宜种植的牧草品种及其栽培管理技术,系统还将22种牧草的适应性分布成图。样本运行结果表明,系统具有较好的决策功能,可以为甘肃省的退耕还草工作提供决策支持。  相似文献

二月兰可作为冬季绿肥作物引入华北地区农田种植,与春玉米等作物形成良好的粮肥复种体系,在华北地区有着广阔前景.本试验调查分析了二月兰从返青到成熟的养分含量及累积状况,结果表明,二月兰植株体的养分含量较高,盛花期其干物质氮、磷、钾含量分别为2.99%、0.42%和2.99%,且产量较高.二月兰对氮、钾的累积量大,对磷的累积量较小.盛花期二月兰的养分已累计完成了总量的86.3%~94.0%,是进行翻压的最适宜时期.二月兰的养分累积过程符合Logistic方程y=k/(1 +ae-bx),氮、磷、钾最大累积速率出现的先后顺序为磷最早、氮次之、钾最晚.  相似文献

Twenty eight species of forage crops were planted on acid soils derived from Quaternary red clay (pH 4.16) and red sandstone (pH 4.55) to study genotypic differences of the forage crops in tolerance to acid soils as affected by liming, phosporus and potassium fertilizer application. Eight forage species, Lolium multiflorum L., Brachiaria decumbens, Digitaria sumtisii, Melinis minutiflora, Paspalum dilatatum, Paspalum wettsteinii, Sataria viridis Beanv and Shcep's Festuca, were highly tolerant to acid soils, and grew relatively well in the tested soils without lime application, whereas most of the other 20 tested forage species such as Lolium perenne L., Meadow Festuca and Trifolium pratense L. were intolerant to acid soils, showing retarded growth when the soil pH was below 5.5 and significant increase in dry matter yields by phosphrus fertilizer application at soil pH 6.0. Results showed that large differences in tolerance to acid soils existed among the forage species, and tolerance of the forage species to acid soils might be closely associated with their tolerance to Al and P efficiency.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted in 2002 and 2003 on a Black Chernozem (Udic Boroll) silty clay soil at Melfort, Saskatchewan, to determine the effects of seeding date on forage dry-matter yield (DMY) and quality [protein and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents] of four annual crops [barley (Hordium vulgare L.), oat (Avena sativa L.), triticale (×?Triticosecale Wittmack L.), and foxtail millet (Setaria italica L. Beauv; hereafter called Golden German millet)] with various maturities as well as different growing-season temperature and moisture requirements. Seeding date had a significant effect on forage DMY of all four crops in each 2002 and 2003. In 2002, the greatest forage DMY for barley, oat, triticale, and Golden German millet was achieved on 3 July, 22 June, 3 July, and 24 May, respectively. In 2003, the greatest forage DMY was from the 24 May seeding date for all four crops. In both 2002 and 2003, protein content in forage tended to decrease as DMY increased in all crops. In 2002, protein content in forage tended to be greater for the cereals with the early seeding dates and lowest days to harvest. The greatest protein content in forage for Golden German millet occurred at the latest seeding date but the fewest days to harvest. In 2003, the greatest protein content in forage occurred at the latest seeding date and fewest days to maturity for all four crops. In both 2002 and 2003, ADF content in forage responded inversely to protein content in forage. The ADF content in forage tended to increase as DMY of all crops increased and days to harvest increased. The seeding date for maximum DMY of cool-season crops was greatly influenced by the growing-season conditions in this study whereas the seeding date of the one warm-season crop was not. In conclusion, the findings suggest that date of seeding of annual forage crops would affect forage yield, and rainfall distribution throughout the growing season also plays a significant role in annual crop forage yields. As long as there is adequate precipitation later in the growing season, late seeding can also result in good forage yields.  相似文献

Abstract

A two‐year study was conducted to determine the macromineral status of cattle grazed forages, mostly bahiagrass, and soils in central Florida. Soil and forage samples were collected every month for two years. Month differences (P < 0.01) were observed in all forage macrominerals and in crude protein (CP) for both years. No month effect (P > 0.05) was observed in IVOMD level during year 1. Year effects (P < 0.05) were observed in calcium (Ca), sodium (Na) and CP. Concentrations below the critical level were observed in all macrominerals studied. Higher forage macro‐mineral concentrations were found during spring‐summer months. In general, higher (P < 0.05) soil aluminum (Al), Ca, magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), and organic matter (OM) were observed during fall‐winter months, while Na was higher in winter. Soil Ca and Mg were adequate and potassium (K), Na and P were deficient. Year 2 showed higher (P < 0.05) soil macromineral concentrations. Correlation coefficients (r >|0.5|, P < 0.05) were present between forage K and forage CP (r = 0.557) and between forage P and forage CP (r = 0.554). Low correlations were found between soil and forage macrominerals. Percentages of total forage samples with macromineral and CP concentrations below critical levels (in parentheses) and suggestive of deficiency were as follow: in forage, Ca (0.30 ppm), 21%; Mg (0.18 ppm), 34%; K (0.60 ppm), 47%; Na (0.06 ppm), 89%; P (0.25 ppm), 85%; and CP (7%), 18%.  相似文献

 N2O emission rates from a sandy loam soil were measured in a field experiment with 2 years of perennial forage crops (ryegrass, ryegrass-red clover, red clover) and 1 year of spring barley cultivation. Spring barley was sown after the incorporation of the forage crop residues. All spring barley plots received 40 kg N ha–1 N fertiliser. Ryegrass, ryegrass-red clover and red clover plots were fertilised with 350 kg N ha–1, 175 kg N ha–1 and 0 kg N ha–1, respectively. From June 1994 to February 1997, N2O fluxes were continuously estimated using very large, closed soil cover boxes (5.76 m2). In order to compare the growing crops, the 33 months of investigation were separated into three vegetation periods (March–September) and three winter periods (October–February). All agronomic treatments (fertilisation, harvest and tillage) were carried out during the vegetation period. Large temporal changes were found in the N2O emission rates. The data were approximately log-normally distributed. Forty-seven percent of the annual N2O losses were observed to occur during winter, and mainly resulted from N2O production during daily thawing and freezing cycles. No relationship was found between the N2O emissions during the winter and the vegetation period. During the vegetation period, N2O losses and yields were significantly different between the three forage crops. The unfertilised clover plot produced the highest yields and the lowest N2O losses on this soil compared to the highly fertilised ryegrass plot. Total N2O losses from soil under spring barley were higher than those from soil under the forage crops; this was mainly a consequence of N2O emissions after the incorporation of the forage crop residues. 针对陕北半湿润黄土丘陵区的侧柏、油松和落叶松等针叶纯林,在前期关于土壤极化研究的基础上,通过采集林地腐殖质层土壤与7种不同牧草枯落物进行混合分解培养,研究不同牧草枯落物对针叶纯林土壤的修复效应,以此作为选择适宜修复牧草种的依据。结果表明:(1)针对侧柏纯林土壤,苜蓿等7种牧草对于速效钾含量,苜蓿、胡枝子、沙打旺、小冠花和草木樨对于蛋白酶活性的负向极化具有显著缓减作用。(2)针对油松纯林土壤,7种牧草对于碱解氮含量,毛苕子、苜蓿和草木樨对于有效磷含量,苜蓿对于蔗糖酶活性的负向极化均有显著缓减作用。(3)针对落叶松纯林土壤,胡枝子和红豆草对于碱解氮含量,苜蓿、红豆草、小冠花和毛苕子对于有效磷含量,除苜蓿和毛苕子外的其他牧草对于有机质含量,苜蓿以外其他牧草对于磷酸酶活性的负向极化均具有显著缓减作用。(4)综合主成分分析表明,对侧柏纯林土壤综合修复效果较好的依次是沙打旺、小冠花、胡枝子和毛苕子;对于油松纯林土壤综合修复效果较好的依次是苜蓿、小冠花和草木樨;对于落叶松纯林土壤综合修复效果较好的依次是苜蓿、草木樨和红豆草。  相似文献

An accurate method for estimation of lignin concentration is important for prediction of the digestible energy content of livestock feeds. The accuracy of lignin concentration estimates based on the Klason lignin and acid detergent lignin methods was compared. Ten diverse forage samples were analyzed for protein, carbohydrates, lipids, organic acids, ash, lignin (by both methods), and gross energy. The accuracy of the two lignin concentration estimates was examined by comparing the measured forage gross energy to a gross energy value calculated from the compositional analysis. Use of the acid detergent lignin estimate in this gross energy calculation accounted for 68-84% of the forage gross energy compared to 85-97% of the gross energy using Klason lignin. These results indicate that while Klason lignin estimates are substantially higher than acid detergent lignin estimates, Klason lignin is the more accurate lignin method and does not overestimate lignin because gross energy recoveries were less than 100%.  相似文献

以黄土丘陵区具有代表性的禾本科笔草无芒雀麦及豆科牧草沙打旺,草木樨为材料,研究其对川台地土壤腐殖质含量和组成,有关营养元素及后茬作物产量的不同影响,结果表明,种植禾本科及豆科牧草均能提高土壤中腐殖质及氮素营养的水平,其中禾本科牧草效果较豆科牧草更为明显,它们对土壤中微量元素的影响因各自对营养元素的利用程度而异。三种牧草样地后茬作物的产量以草木樨为高,无芒雀麦不宜与禾本科作物轮作。  相似文献
