We compared serum concentrations of zinc, chromium, and iron in dogs with cancer to those of normal dogs. Dogs with lymphoma (n = 50) and osteosarcoma (n = 52) were evaluated. Dogs with lymphoma had significantly lower (P = .0028) mean serum zinc concentrations (mean +/- SD; 1.0 +/- 0.3 mg/L) when compared to normal dogs (1.2 +/- 0.4 mg/L). Dogs with osteosarcoma also had lower mean serum zinc concentrations (1.1 +/- 0.4 mg/L), but this difference was not significant (P = .075). Serum chromium concentrations were significantly lower in dogs with lymphoma (2.6 +/- 2.6 microg/L, P = .0007) and osteosarcoma (2.4 +/- 3.1 microg/L, P = .0001) compared to normal dogs (4.7 +/- 2.8 microg/L). Serum iron concentrations and total iron-binding capacity were significantly lower in dogs with lymphoma (110.8 +/- 56.7 microg/dL, P < .0001, and 236.6 +/- 45.6 microg/dL, P < .0001, respectively) and osteosarcoma (99.6 +/- 49.3 microg/dL, P < .0001, and 245.0 +/- 43.8 microg/dL, P = .0011, respectively) when compared to normal dogs (175.1 +/- 56.7 microg/dL and 277.1 +/- 47.4 microg/dL). Mean ferritin concentration was significantly higher in dogs with lymphoma (1291.7 +/- 63.0 microg/L) than in normal dogs (805.8 +/- 291.1 microg/L, P < .0001) and dogs with osteosarcoma (826.5 +/- 309.2 microg/L, P < .0001). Further investigation is needed to explore the clinical significance of these mineral abnormalities in dogs with cancer.  相似文献

To evaluate the association between corneal lipid infiltration (corneal arcus) and dietary cholesterol in Cuban tree frogs (Osteopilus septentrionalis), 47 wild-caught frogs were fed diets of either regular or high-cholesterol crickets containing 0.7% and 1.7% cholesterol dry matter, respectively. Serum total cholesterol and triglycerides were measured when the frogs were euthanized after 17 mo. In a subsample of frogs, serum lipoproteins were characterized using high-performance liquid chromatography. The first case of corneal lipid deposition occurred in a female frog after 13 mo on the high-cholesterol diet. In the subsequent 4 mo, 5/11 males and 11/35 females developed the disease. Four of these affected frogs were females on the regular diet. Frogs with corneal lipid deposition had elevated serum total cholesterol (27.3 +/- 19.8 mmol/L) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL, 17.8 +/- 18.9 mmol/L) compared with unaffected captive frogs (16.5 +/- 20.4 and 9.0 +/- 7.6 mmol/L, respectively). Corneal lipid deposition was more prevalent in frogs on the high-cholesterol diet, and this group had higher serum total cholesterol (34.1 +/- 15.2 mmol/L in females, 22.8 +/- 14.8 mmol/L in males) than did frogs on the diet of regular crickets (12.3 +/- 8.7 mmol/L in females, 10.4 +/- 3.1 mmol/L in males). Captive frogs on both diets had higher serum total cholesterol than did wild frogs (3.1 +/- 2.1 mmo/L in females, 5.3 +/- 2.6 mmo/L in males). This additional serum cholesterol was primarily carried on very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) and LDL rather than high-density lipoproteins (HDL), as indicated by the significantly higher ratio of VLDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol over HDL cholesterol in captive frogs compared with wild frogs. Elevation in this ratio was significantly higher in captive females than in captive males. There was no evidence that increased serum cholesterol in captive females was directly related to the process of vitellogenesis.  相似文献

The relationships of various iron-related analytes were evaluated in 95 dogs. Liver and spleen nonheme iron content was determined coulometrically on acid-digested tissue specimens. Serum iron concentration and total iron-binding capacity also were measured coulometrically, whereas serum ferritin concentration was measured by ELISA. Significant (P less than 0.0002) correlation was found between serum ferritin concentration and nonheme iron stores. Significant correlation was not found between nonheme iron stores and serum iron concentration or total iron-binding capacity. Serum ferritin concentration should provide a convenient and relatively noninvasive means of estimating iron stores in dogs.  相似文献

Lemurs in captivity progressively accumulate iron deposits in a variety of organs (hemosiderosis) including duodenum, liver, and spleen throughout their lives. When excessive, the toxic effects of intracellular iron on parenchymal cells, particularly the liver, can result in clinical disease and death. The pathogenesis of excessive iron storage in these species has been attributed to dietary factors related to diets commonly fed in captivity. Tissue iron stores can be directly estimated by tissue biopsy and histologic examination, or quantitated by chemical analysis of biopsy tissue, However, expense and risk associated with anesthesia and surgery prevent routine use of tissue biopsy to assess iron status. A noninvasive means of assessing total body iron stores is needed to monitor iron stores in lemurs to determine whether dietary modification is preventing excessive iron deposition, and to monitor potential therapies such as phlebotomy or chelation. Serum ferritin concentration correlates with tissue iron stores in humans, horses, calves, dogs, cats, and pigs. Serum ferritin is considered the best serum analyte to predict total body iron stores in these species and is more reliable than serum iron or total iron binding capacity, both of which may be affected by disorders unrelated to iron adequacy or excess including hypoproteinemia, chronic infection, hemolytic anemia, hypothyroidism, renal disease, and drug administration. We have developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to measure serum ferritin in lemurs. The assay uses polyclonal rabbit anti-human ferritin antibodies in a sandwich arrangement. Ferritin isolated from liver and spleen of a black and white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata variegata) was used as a standard. Ferritin standards were linear from 0 to 50 microg/L. Recovery of purified ferritin from lemur serum varied from 95% to 110%. The within-assay variability was 4.5%, and the assay-to-assay variability for three different samples ranged from 10% to 17%. This study evaluated the relationship between blood iron parameters and hepatic iron concentrations, and correlation of histologic findings with hepatic iron concentrations in a captive population of Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) and island flying foxes (Pteropus hypomelanus). Blood samples were collected for complete blood counts, plasma biochemical profiles, serum iron concentrations, total iron-binding capacity, whole-blood lead concentrations, and plasma ferritin assays. Liver samples obtained by laparotomy were divided, with one half processed for histologic examination and the other half frozen and submitted for tissue mineral analysis. The histologic sections were scored by two blinded observers for iron deposition, necrosis, and fibrosis. The Egyptian fruit bats had significantly higher liver iron (mean = 3,669 +/- 1,823 ppm) and lead (mean = 8.9 +/- 5.8 ppm) concentrations than the island flying foxes (mean [Fe] = 174 +/- 173 ppm, mean [Pb] = 1.9 +/- 0.5 ppm). Hepatic iron concentrations significantly correlated with tissue lead concentrations, histologic grading for iron and necrosis, serum iron, transferrin saturation, and plasma ferritin (P < 0.001). Blood lead concentrations negatively correlated with tissue lead concentrations (P < 0.001). When the product of transferrin saturation and serum iron was greater than 51, an individual animal had a high probability of having iron overload. When the product of these two variables was greater than 90, there was a high probability that the animal had hemochromatosis. On the basis of this study, it appears that evaluation of serum iron, transferrin saturation, and plasma ferritin are useful and noninvasive methods for diagnosis of hemochromatosis in Egyptian fruit bats.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possibility that excessive maternal iron (overload) may contribute to development of congenital leukoencephalomalacia in captive black rhinoceroses. SAMPLE POPULATION: Tissue specimens and serum samples from 18 rhinoceroses in 2 kindreds harboring 4 (possibly 5) affected female calves. PROCEDURE: Fresh and archival sera and necropsy tissue specimens were evaluated to determine the nature and extent of iron overload in captive and wild black rhinoceroses as well as other rhinoceros species. RESULTS: Quantitative serum and tissue assays of iron and iron analytes, corroborated by histopathologic findings, indicated that these kindreds carried the greatest body burdens of iron yet found among captive black rhinoceroses. Fourteen of 18 rhinoceroses had the highest serum ferritin concentrations measured among 64 black rhinoceroses in captivity in the United States. Dams of affected calves had serum ferritin concentrations 2 orders of magnitude higher than clinically normal humans, equids, or free-ranging rhinoceroses. A neonatal serum sample from 1 affected female calf had a high ferritin concentration (approx 100-fold increase), but a male sibling of another affected female did not, suggesting a possible sex disparity in fetal response to maternal iron overload. Morphologic hallmarks of hemochromatosis were prominent in dams and grandams of affected calves. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Excessive maternal iron may affect female fetuses more than males, possibly inducing leukoencephalomalacia by catalyzing production of highly toxic hydroxyl free radicals during crucial periods of in utero development. Reduction of maternal iron overload may decrease the probability of developing leukoencephalomalacia and some other disorders commonly affecting rhinoceroses in captivity.  相似文献

Dexamethasone treatment at birth enhances neonatal growth in swine   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The objective of the present study was to determine if dexamethasone (Dex; a potent synthetic glucocorticoid) treatment at birth would alter postnatal growth in neonatal pigs. Forty crossbred pigs were injected i.m. with either sterile saline (Cont; n = 10 males and 10 females) or Dex (1 mg/kg; n = 10 males and 10 females) within 1 hr of birth. All pigs remained with their respective dams until 18 d of age. Body weights were recorded weekly and on d 18. On d 17, all pigs were nonsurgically fitted with an indwelling jugular catheter and placed back with the sows. On d 18, all pigs were placed in individual pens for serial blood collection. Birth weights (1.53 +/-.04 kg) did not differ between birth treatments or sex classes (P > 0.70 and 0.89, respectively). A time by treatment effect was detected (P < 0.007) for body weight such that those pigs which received Dex at birth had the greatest body weights during the 18-d period. Average daily gain was increased (P < 0.017) by 12.2% in those pigs which received Dex at birth (.286 +/-.007) as compared to the Cont pigs (.255 +/-.01 kg/d). Serum concentration of IGF-1 was influenced by both treatment (P < 0.0001) and sex class (P < 0.013). In the male pigs, Dex increased (P = 0.0041) serum concentration of IGF-1 by 47% as compared to Cont male pigs, whereas in the females, Dex increased (P < 0.011) serum concentration of IGF-1 by 34% as compared to Cont female pigs. Dex treatment reduced (P < 0.002) serum IGF-2 by 12.8%. Serum concentration of IGFBP-3 was influenced by both birth treatment (P < 0.007) and sex class (P < 0.002) such that Dex treatment increased serum IGFBP-3, and higher concentrations of IGFBP-3 were observed in boars as compared to gilts. These data suggest that the early neonatal period may be an opportune time to alter physiological factors which influence growth in swine.  相似文献

Serum immunoglobulin G (IgG; indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), as well as sexual and adrenal steroid hormones' concentrations (radioimmunoassay) were determined in 63 (male and female) Southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonine) at different developmental stages (weaned pups, juveniles and adults). In females, IgG values (mean+/-S.D.) were higher (P<0.05) in adults (15.9+/-6.5mg ml(-1)) than in juveniles (7.9+/-4.0mg ml(-1)), but similar to weaned pups (12.0+/-5.0mg ml(-1)). Estrogen concentration was higher (P<0.05) in adults than in the weaned pups. In females, a significant (P<0.05) correlation (R=0.4) between serum IgG level and progesterone concentration was observed. In males, testosterone concentration was higher (P<0.05) in adults than in the juveniles and weaned pups. Aldosterone and cortisol concentrations were higher (P<0.05) in weaned pups (1056.0+/-643.1pmol 1(-1) and 272.7+/-110.0 nmol 1(-1), respectively) than in the juveniles (638.6+/-579.7pmol1(-1) and 152.9+/-97.3nmol 1(-1), respectively) and adults (386.5+/-209.1pmol (-1) and 145.7+/-67.3nmol 1(-1), respectively). These findings indicate that weaned pups are subjected to a higher natural stressful condition in the field. Despite this, humoral immunity, measured through IgG concentration, is not impaired in weaned pups.  相似文献

The predictive value of elevated plasma prolactin concentrations for the presence of spontaneous pituitary lesions was studied in 40 male and 38 female Wistar (Cpb:WU) rats, all 30 months old. The pituitaries were examined light microscopically and stained for prolactin using immunohistochemical methods. Plasma prolactin concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay. Pituitary lesions were classified on the basis of their morphology in hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections as foci of hypertrophic or hyperplastic cells and hemorrhagic, pleomorphic, or spongiocytic adenomas; no carcinomas were found. There were significantly (P = 0.001) more female than male rats with pituitary adenomas (58% females, 33% males) or without any pituitary lesions (21% females, 5% males); however, there were less female (21%) than male rats (63%) with foci of hyperplastic and/or hypertrophic cells but no adenomas in the pituitary (P = 0.001). Elevation of plasma prolactin concentration above the upper 99th percentile value in age-matched rats without lesions was predictive, but not conclusively, of the presence of pituitary hemorrhagic adenomas in both sexes. It was, however, not predictive of the presence of foci of hypertrophic or hyperplastic cells. Elevation of plasma prolactin concentration above 10 ng/ml in male and 60 ng/ml in female rats was conclusive for the presence of hemorrhagic adenomas. Using multivariate analysis, significant positive correlations (P less than 0.01) were found between plasma prolactin concentration and presence and size of hemorrhagic adenomas and their prolactin staining intensity (correlation coefficients between 0.392 and 0.652). Foci of hyperplastic cells stained positively for prolactin, whereas hypertrophic cell foci and pleomorphic and spongiocytic adenomas did not stain for prolactin. There were no correlations (coefficients of less than +/- 0.189) between plasma prolactin concentration and the presence of hypertrophic or hyperplastic cell foci and pleomorphic or spongiocytic adenomas in the pituitary. The morphologic criteria developed to distinguish spontaneous hypertrophic, hyperplastic, and neoplastic lesions of the rat pituitary corresponded well with their prolactin immunoreactivity and/or ability to elevate plasma prolactin concentration. These criteria constitute a biologically meaningful classification system for these rat pituitary lesions.  相似文献

A combination of thiafentanil (A3080), medetomidine hydrochloride (MED) and ketamine hydrochloride (KET) was evaluated in 19 boma-habituated (12 female and 7 males) and 9 free-ranging nyala (7 male and 2 females) (Tragelaphus angasi) to develop a safe and reliable anaesthesia protocol. Wide dosages were used safely during this study with ranges for A3080 of 45 +/- 8 microg/kg with MED of 69 +/- 19 microg/kg and KET of 3.7 +/- 1.0 mg/kg (200 mg/ animal). The dosages developed on boma-habituated nyala proved to be equally effective in 9 adult free-ranging nyala (7 males and 2 females). The optimum dosage for nyala was a combination of A3080 (40-50 microg/kg), MED (60-80 microg/kg) plus 200 mg of KET/animal. The anaesthesia was characterised by a short induction, good muscle relaxation and mild hypoxaemia during monitoring the anaesthesia was rapidly and completely reversed by naltrexone hydrochloride (30 mg/mg of A3080) and atipamezole hydrochloride (5 mg/mg of MED) given intramuscularly. There was no mortality or morbidity associated with this protocol.  相似文献

The ability of adult Haemonchus placei intestinal homogenate to confer protection against homologous challenge infection was evaluated. Calves were immunized twice with 100 microg H. placei intestinal protein in 5% dextran-sulfate/PBS (vaccinates) or PBS alone (controls) and were challenged with approximately 3300 infective H. placei larvae. There was no significant difference between groups in the total number of nematodes recovered but significantly fewer (p < 0.001) adult females were recovered from vaccinates. The proportion of fourth-stage larvae in vaccinates was significantly greater (p < or = 0.05) than in controls. Lengths of adult male and female nematodes were significantly shorter (p < 0.001) in vaccinated calves, and the numbers of eggs present in the uteri of female nematodes from vaccinates were significantly decreased (p < 0.001). Counts of nematode eggs per gram of feces (EPG) of vaccinates were significantly less than that for controls on Days 29-49 post-challenge (p < or = 0.05). Vaccinates had significant increases in serum IgG1 and IgG2 log(10) titers (p < or = 0.05) but not in serum IgM. EPG, numbers of females, and size of males and females were negatively correlated with increased mean post-challenge IgG1 and IgG2 titers. Reduction in binding of periodate-treated gut homogenate by immune serum indicated a carbohydrate specific component in the immune response.  相似文献

Status of serum electrolyte and nonelectrolyte variables can be used for managing sturgeon species cultured in freshwater or living in seawater. The aim of the present study was to evaluate serum biochemical variables in clinically healthy juvenile Persian sturgeon Acipenser persicus cultured in freshwater. Serum samples from 11 females and 10 males were analyzed, and levels (mean +/- SD) of the following variables were compared between sexes: glucose (Glc; 5.58 +/- 1.25 mmol/L for females and 8.56 +/- 1.80 mmol/L for males), total cholesterol (TC; 2.50 +/- 0.45 and 2.40 +/- 0.65 mmol/L), triglyceride (TG; 7.13 +/- 2.68 and 5.14 +/- 1.27 mmol/L), blood urea nitrogen (BUN; 1.28 +/- 0.2 and 1.01 +/- 0.2 mmol/L), total protein (TOP; 55.84 +/- 8.77 and 41.44 +/- 8.62 g/L), inorganic phosphate (P(i); 6.19 +/- 1.02 and 5.23 +/- 0.49 mmol/L), calcium (Ca; 2.80 +/- 0.43 and 2.63 +/- 0.32 mmol/L), magnesium (Mg; 0.9 +/- 0.23 and 0.99 +/- 0.22 mmol/L), sodium (Na; 152.80 +/- 13.81 and 156.38 +/- 12.67 mmol/L), potassium (K; 2.64 +/- 0.58 and 2.27 +/- 0.39 mmol/L), and chloride (Cl; 143 +/- 13.85 and 151.67 +/- 21.08 mmol/L). There were no differences in TC, Ca, Mg, Na, K, or Cl between sexes. The Glc value was lower in female Persian sturgeon than in males, whereas the values of TG, BUN, TOP, and P(i) were higher in females than in males. Freshwater adaptation may affect serum ion concentrations in juvenile Persian sturgeon.  相似文献

Serum samples from 63 clinically normal captive black and white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata variegata) were analyzed to survey serum iron, total iron binding capacity, transferrin saturation, and serum ferritin levels. Data analysis showed no differences in these analytes attributable to sex, but significantly higher levels of serum iron, transferrin saturation, and serum ferritin in older animals. The survey data were examined in light of two black and white ruffed lemurs that were treated for iron overload with serial phlebotomies. Prior to therapy, both phlebotomized lemurs had excess hepatic iron deposition, but had serum iron, transferrin saturation, and serum ferritin below the upper limits observed in the survey animals, suggesting that some clinically normal animals included in the survey may have accumulated excess systemic iron. Serial phlebotomy therapy reduced serum iron, transferrin saturation, and serum ferritin in both animals. Three years after the conclusion of therapy in the one remaining case, serum iron and transferrin saturation have risen substantially, whereas serum ferritin has risen slightly. Serum iron, transferrin saturation, and serum ferritin may be useful predictors of systemic iron stores in this species, though the correlation between these parameters and systemic iron stores needs to be determined.  相似文献

Eighteen 9- to 10-week old Beagles were fed casein-based diets (4,710 kcal of metabolizable energy/kg of body weight) containing either 12, 80, or 160 mg of iron/kg of diet. Growth and feed consumption were monitored throughout the 47-day study. Hematocrit (Hct), hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), RBC numbers, erythrocyte protoporphyrin (EP) concentration, serum iron concentration, serum total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and serum ferritin concentration were determined weekly. Growth rate and feed efficiency were not significantly influenced by dietary iron content. At 14 days, Hb concentration, Hct, MCV, MCH, RBC numbers, and serum iron concentration were significantly (P less than 0.05) lower in dogs fed the 12 mg/kg diet, and remained significantly low for the remainder of the study. Erythrocyte protoporphyrin concentration increased significantly (P less than 0.05) by 14 days in dogs fed the basal diet, and remained significantly high relative to that in dogs of the other dietary groups for the remainder of the study. Serum ferritin concentration decreased in dogs of the group fed the basal diet, with a significant (P less than 0.05) difference beyond day 42. Differences in Hct, MCH, MCV, or hemoglobin, serum iron, serum ferritin, or EP concentration were not found between groups fed 80 and 160 mg of iron/kg of diet. Liver nonheme iron content was significantly (P less than 0.05) affected by dietary iron content.  相似文献

Twenty-one healthy Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse foals were studied from birth until 1 year of age. Foals had access to an iron-supplemented creep feed before weaning and were fed an iron-supplemented concentrate as part of their diet after weaning at 4 months of age. Initial blood samples were taken before foals were allowed to nurse. Serum iron concentration, total iron-binding capacity, and PCV decreased during the foal's first 24 hours of life. Serum iron concentration decreased rapidly from 446 +/- 16 micrograms/dl (mean +/- SE) at birth to 105 +/- 11 micrograms/dl at 3 days of age. Serum ferritin concentration increased from a mean of 85 +/- 8 ng/ml at birth to 159 +/- 11 ng/ml at 1 day of age. Thereafter, ferritin concentration decreased gradually to a minimum of 61 +/- 6 ng/ml at 3 weeks of age, and then at 6 months increased to values similar to those from reference adult horses. The ferritin concentration in colostrum at birth was 354 +/- 42 ng/ml, compared with 25 +/- 2 ng/ml in milk 1 day later. The decrease and then increase in serum ferritin concentration occurred concomitantly with opposite changes in serum total iron-binding capacity. The mean PCV decreased gradually to a minimum at 3 months of age. This decrease was associated with an increasing number of microcytes, as determined with a cell-size distribution analyzer.  相似文献

The prevalence of subclinical hepatitis was investigated in a group of 106 randomly selected 3-year-old Doberman Pinschers. Histopathologic examination of liver samples from 65 dogs (52 dogs with high bile acids, alkaline phosphatase activity, or alanine aminotransferase activity or with copper granules in hepatocytes in a liver aspirate and 13 normal dogs) revealed subclinical hepatitis in 22 dogs (19 females and 3 males). Liver copper concentrations measured by instrumental neutron activation analysis was significantly higher (mean +/- SD; 419 +/- 414 microg/g dry matter) in dogs with hepatitis than those without liver disease (197 +/- 113 microg/g; P = .0008). At 2.6 +/- 0.6 years hepatitis persisted in 5 of 16 dogs available for examination. One dog with a high copper concentration but normal liver subsequently developed subclinical hepatitis after 3 years. During the follow-up period, the average copper concentration of the 6 dogs with persistent subclinical hepatitis was 939 +/- 299 microg/g and had continued to rise significantly (P = .02). The hepatitis in these dogs was associated with apoptotic hepatocytes and copper-laden Kupffer cells in centrolobular regions. The results of this study suggest that there is a relationship among copper storage, hepatocellular damage, and hepatitis in Doberman Pinschers.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The radiated tortoise (Geochelone radiata) is a critically endangered species in its native land, the southern portion of the island of Madagascar. Captive breeding programs have generated data on the breeding behavior and ecology of G radiata; however, hematologic and biochemical data also are critically important in managing populations. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate sex and seasonal effects on hematologic and biochemical data from captive radiated tortoises. METHODS: Whole blood was collected in January and August 2001 from 18 radiated tortoises (10 male, 8 female) housed at the Wildlife Survival Center on St Catherines Island, Georgia, as part of a routine health assessment. Routine hematologic and plasma biochemical analyses and electrophoresis were done using standard methods. Data from male and female tortoises were compared within and between seasons using 2-way ANOVA. RESULTS: RBC and HCT values were significantly higher in summer than in winter and were higher in males than in females. Total protein concentration did not differ significantly between males and females; however, female tortoises had significantly higher concentrations of alpha1- and beta-globulins in winter and summer compared to males. Male tortoises had significantly higher sodium and uric acid concentrations and LDH activity during winter, and higher urea concentration and LDH and CK activities in summer, compared with females. Female tortoises had significantly higher triglyceride and phosphorus concentrations in winter, and higher phosphorus, cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations in summer, compared with males. CONCLUSION: Sex and seasonal differences in hematologic and biochemical values for radiated tortoises likely reflect vitellogenesis and egg production in females, and altered hydration status and activity in summer. Data from the tortoises in this study will be useful for the seasonal health assessment of this species.  相似文献

In a comparison between male and female broiler chicks, the mortality rate of males was found to be significantly higher than that of females, starting from the second week of age until marketing at 7 or 8 weeks of age. The main causes of death during this period were various infectious diseases. This observation was explained by differences in the activity of humoral and cell-mediated immune responses between the sexes. In tests of antibody responses of young chicks to a variety of antigens (bacterial-E. coli, viral-Newcastle disease virus, and protein antigen-bovine serum albumin), females responded 24-72 h earlier than males and with higher peak antibody titers. In-vitro proliferation of T-lymphocytes to purified protein derivative and E. coli showed an earlier and greater response in females. The correlation between immune responsiveness and survival, as tested by challenging vaccinated chicks with pathogenic E. coli, showed a significantly higher mortality rate in vaccinated males, that was correlated with their lower antibody titer. We concluded, therefore, that sex-related differences in mortality rates of broiler chicks may result from a less efficient immune response in males.  相似文献

Some pharmacokinetic parameters of selamectin were determined in male (n = 5) and female (n = 5) Beagle dogs following a topical application at a dose rate of 6 mg/kg. The plasma concentration versus time data for the drug were analysed using a one-compartment model. The maximum plasma concentrations of 12.72 +/- 5.13 ng/ml for males and 22.65 +/- 11.95 ng/ml for females occurred around 5 days after administration. The area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) was 192.08 +/- 63.85 ng.day/ml for males and 370.97 +/- 146.87 ng.day/ml for females. The mean residence time was the same in males and females (12.55 days). This study reveals a sex-influence on the disposition of selamectin in the plasma of dogs, which implies that further information will be needed for correlation with efficacy studies in dogs.  相似文献
