Several oceanographic studies have associated tuna fisheries to sea surface temperature (SST) fields, although catch per unit of effort (CPUE) has not shown a clear relationship with SST. However, most results concerned species that occur deep in the water column. In this paper, we present a study on the relationship between SST and CPUE for the skipjack tuna fisheries off the southern Brazilian coast, which take place at the sea surface. We use historical data from the Japanese fleet, which operated in the area from July 1982 to June 1992. Fishing sets occurred only in areas where SST ranged from 17°C to 30°C. Frequency of occurrence vs. SST showed a Gaussian distribution, with highest CPUEs in waters of SST 22°-26.5°C. The relationship between CPUE (or fishing set occurrence) and SST varied seasonally. Largest CPUEs occurred in summer, independently of SST. Therefore, temperature alone could not be used as a determinant of CPUE, suggesting that seasonal variability of other environmental parameters has a stronger effect on the CPUE than does SST. However, when the seasonal cycle was excluded from the data sets, a relationship between the interannual variability of SST and CPUE became apparent. Cross-correlation analysis between CPUE and SST has shown that oscillations in CPUE anomalies precede oscillations in SST anomalies by a month, but the mechanism relating them in this way is unknown.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   The feeding habits of Lampanyctus jordani , an abundant mesopelagic fish in the subarctic North Pacific, was examined based on the stomach contents of 721 specimens collected over the continental slope off the Tohoku area, Pacific coast of northern Japan during April and October from 1996 to 1998. The prey items comprised mainly crustaceans such as copepods, amphipods, euphausiids and decapods. Euphausiids were the most important items in the diet both during April and October. During April, when the annual maximum of zooplankton biomass occurred and the Oyashio Intrusion Current prevailed, L. jordani fed intensively and consumed a high proportion of Euphausia pacifica . These seasonal variations also influenced the feeding intensity and dietary diversity. Feeding intensity, measured by the stomach contents index, was higher during April than October, reflecting the higher biomass of zooplankton in the Tohoku area during spring. The dietary diversity of L. jordani was lower during April than October, indicating that L. jordani shifted to a wider variety of prey when the availability of E. pacifica was limited.  相似文献

本研究是在阐明传统CPUE(Catch Per Unit Effort)单位表述多样性的基础上,分析传统CPUE存在的不确定性、单位不统一性以及解析与意义不完整等问题。对24个CPUE单位,首先通过通用性标准,筛选出各种捕捞方式均能适用的8个CPUE单位;再通过相似性标准,对CPUE单位聚类分成2组,并在每组中筛选出最佳单位为kg/(kW·d)和kg/d;最后通过稳定性筛选标准对其标准差与变异系数值计算,最终得到CPUE的标准单位:kg/(kW·d),并确定CPUE的表达形式。本研究还基于CPUE单位标准化进行了实证分析,对2016年4个季度南海三省区的9种主要作业类型渔船的生产调查数据进行了分析比较,捕捞能力大小依次为:围网双拖刺网罩网张网单拖拖虾笼壶钓具。CPUE经单位标准化后已具备进行捕捞产量统计、评估渔船捕捞能力、衡量资源相对丰度指数、评估渔业资源利用水平等功能。  相似文献

Short-term fluctuations in the octopus catches off the Canary Islands have been attributed to changes in the sea surface temperature (SST) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) pattern. These results have been found using stationarity assumptions. However, the behavior of environmental systems is not always linear, and environmental time series do not always satisfy the statistical property of stationarity. Wavelet spectral analysis is a methodology which can deal with non-linear, non-stationary and noisy time series. Cross wavelet analysis (wavelet coherence) is applied to investigate the environmental effects (SST, NAO) on octopus abundance fluctuations measured as capture per unit of effort (CPUE) from 1989 to 2007 in the waters of the Canary Islands. A slightly positive correlation exists between NAO and CPUE at lags and leads of a few months. Additionally, a good relationship between SST and CPUE exists on the same seasonal scale, but there is a relatively weak relationship between SST anomalies and the NAO. When the analysis is extended to the interannual scale, the wavelet coherence identifies a statistically significant relationship between CPUE and NAO, but this does not happen when the wavelet coherence between CPUE and SST is computed. These results suggest that fluctuations in octopus catches could be the result of SST fluctuations but in synergy with other unknown environmental variables which are also affected by the NAO pattern.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of climate and marine variability on the catches of Lutjanus purpureus in three sectors of the Amazon Continental Shelf. Remote sensing data were compared with landings (CPUE) between 1997 and 2007 and analyzed for partial influence obtained through the Generalized Additive Model. Additionally, significant variables were analyzed through Wavelet Cross-Spectrum, and periods of high correlation between variables in space and time were identified. The results indicated a high coherence between catch per unit effort (CPUE) and environmental variables on an interannual scale, suggesting that Red Snapper fishing is mainly influenced by the seasonal effects of oceanographic variables. These results suggest that fluctuations in Red Snapper catches between 1997 and 2007 may be the result of natural processes that occur in the Amazon Continental Shelf every year in synergy with environmental variables, which are also indirectly affected by the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) pattern.  相似文献

根据虾拖网存在网目偏小,渔获物中经济鱼、虾类幼体和杂物所占比例较大等问题,于2002~2003年对在福建海区生产的网板虾拖网作业的网具进行改革,主要是在网具的后部采用上、下两个囊网。下囊网入口处装配刚性栅隔装置,起鱼、虾分离作用,上囊网采用放大网目尺寸,以达到释放经济鱼、虾类幼体为目的。通过改革试验取得了良好的效果。本文着重论述改革后的渔具特点与渔法。  相似文献

Spatial variations in feeding and condition of juvenile pink (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and chum (Oncorhynchus keta) salmon, and their implications for growth, were examined on the Vancouver Island continental shelf in early summer 1992. Juvenile pink salmon off northern Vancouver Island had more material in their stomachs, were in better condition, and had higher potential growth rates (from a bioenergetics model) than pink salmon off southern Vancouver Island. These variations were consistent with spatial differences in zoo-plankton biomass, there being more plankton in the northern region. There was a significant positive relationship between condition of pinks and the amount of material in their stomachs, suggesting a positive feedback on feeding success. Juvenile chum in the north also had more material in their stomachs than chum to the south. However, condition factor was not significantly different between southern and northern regions nor was there a significant relationship between condition factor and the weight of stomach contents for chum on the southern shelf. A bioenergetics model suggests that chum in the south were food limited. Stable carbon isotope data also indicated different feeding histories for some chum in the southern region, which may have been recent migrants onto the continental shelf from near-shore areas, or possibly a nearby hatchery. Estimation of the energy required by juvenile salmon to migrate north in a continental shelf area with low zooplankton biomass and a weak northerly current (inner shelf), compared with an area with higher zooplankton biomass but a strong southerly current (outer shelf), indicated sufficient surplus energy only in the inner shelf, consistent with observations of northward migrations predominantly through this area. Spatial variations in current velocity and zooplankton biomass can affect feeding, condition, and potential growth of juvenile pink and chum salmon off Vancouver Island.  相似文献

This study evaluates the influence of oceanic variability on plankton and fish production in a coastal upwelling system off southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. A trophodynamics model is used to hind-cast plankton and fish production as estimated by empirical seasonal patterns in upwelling, sea surface temperature, solar radiation, and by biomasses of Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) and Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi). Simulation results indicate that interannual and longer-term variability in coastal plankton production occurs, and that the patterns are primarily determined by the dynamics in the initiation and intensity of coastal upwelling. Fish properties are greatly influenced by zooplankton, with simulated hake production being correlated with summer euphausiid production, and measured herring condition being correlated with autumn zooplankton production. An evaluation of transfer efficiencies indicates that interannual variability in the diatom-to-fish transfer is high (CV = 78%), with the majority of this variability occurring in the diatom-to-zooplankton component of the transfer. Seasonal dynamics of the diatom-to-zooplankton transfer result from the effects of upwelling on diatom production, and subsequent trophodynamic phasing with copepods and euphausiids.  相似文献

Historical catch per unit effort (CPUE) from the period in the development of commercial fisheries prior to the implementation of any temporal or spatial closures can provide insight into how environmental factors affect life history events. These insights can then inform contemporary fishery management practices to improve sustainability. We examined the timing of the offshore dispersal and onshore movement to aggregate on the spawning grounds of the grooved tiger prawn Penaeus semisulcatus in the north‐west Gulf of Carpentaria using all available historical CPUE data between 1970 and 1987. The impact of climate conditions on the timing of the winter minimum CPUE (dispersal) was quantified by fitting univariate relationships with non‐parametric weighted local regression (Loess). The timing of the winter minimum CPUE was delayed by 5 weeks in years with at least 1 week of rainfall > 250 mm, and was delayed by 5 weeks in years when the wet season continued through April, rather than ending in March. Under current climate predictions, rainfall is projected to increase in variability in this region. Our results indicate that the sustainability of the prawn trawl fishery may be enhanced if seasonal fishing effort restrictions and closure dates are not fixed, but are managed to reflect variation in the timing of the end of the previous wet season.  相似文献

We investigated environmental effects on larval anchovy fluctuations (based on CPUE from 1980 to 2000) in the waters off southwestern Taiwan using advanced time series analyses, including the state-space approach to remove seasonality, wavelet analysis to investigate transient relationships, and stationary bootstrap to test correlation between time series. For large-scale environmental effects, we used the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) to represent the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO); for local hydrographic conditions, we used sea surface temperature (SST), river runoff, and mixing conditions. Whereas the anchovy catch consisted of a northern species ( Engraulis japonicus ) and two southern species ( Encrasicholina heteroloba and Encrasicholina punctifer ), the magnitude of the anchovy catch appeared to be mainly determined by the strength of Eng. japonicus (Japanese anchovy). The main factor that caused the interannual variation of anchovy CPUE might change through time. The CPUE showed a negative correlation with combination of water temperature and river runoff before 1987 and a positive correlation with river runoff after 1988. Whereas a significant negative correlation between CPUE and ENSOs existed, this correlation was driven completely by the low-frequency ENSO events and explained only 10% of the variance. Several previous studies on this population emphasized that the fluctuations of larval anchovy abundance were determined by local SST. Our analyses indicated that such a correlation was transient and simply reflected ENSO signals. Recent advances in physical oceanography around Taiwan showed that the ENSOs reduced the strength of the Asian monsoon and thus weakened the China Coastal Current toward Taiwan. The decline of larval anchovy during ENSO may be due to reduced China Coastal Current, which is important in facilitating the spawning migration of the Japanese anchovy.  相似文献

日本鲐是我国近海重要的中上层鱼类资源之一,评估其资源量需要对单位捕捞努力量渔获量(CPUE)进行标准化。影响CPUE标准化的因素很多,包括季节、区域和海洋环境等。本文利用广义线型模型(GLM)和广义加性模型(GAM),结合时空、捕捞船、表温等因子,对1998-2006年东、黄海大型灯光围网渔业鲐鱼CPUE进行标准化,并评价各因子对CPUE的影响。首先应用GLM模型评价时间、空间、环境以及捕捞渔船参数对CPUE的影响,并确定显著性变量。其次,将显著性变量逐一加入GAM模型,根据Akaike信息法则(AIC),选择最优的GAM模型。最后,利用最优的GAM模型对CPUE标准化,并定量分析时间、空间、环境以及捕捞渔船参数对鲐鱼CPUE的影响。GLM模型结果表明:8个变量对CPUE有重要影响,依次为年、船队、船队与年的交互效应、月、船队与月份的交换效应、经度、纬度和海表温。根据AIC,包含上述8个显著性变量的GAM模型为最优模型,对CPUE偏差的解释为27.78%。GAM模型结果表明:高CPUE分别出现在夏季海表温为28~31 ℃的东海中部和冬季海表温为12~16 ℃的黄海;1998-2006年,标准化后的CPUE呈逐年下降趋势,与持续增长的捕捞努力量有关。  相似文献

Using cloud-free Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) sea surface temperature (SST) and daily set longline fishery data, we studied the relationship between albacore (ALB) fishing grounds and thermal conditions in the southern Indian Ocean. SST and Jensen-Shannon divergence (JSD) maps with a daily spatiotemporal resolution were related to sites with high catches per unit effort (CPUE) (>11 fish/103 hooks). A high JSD is considered to be an index of a SST front. In winter, high CPUE occurred in the vicinity of the North Subtropical Front (Belkin and Gordon, 1996), where SST was 15-19 °C and JSD was 0.3-0.9. Histograms of the high CPUE plotted against SST and JSD indicated that 95% of the high CPUEs were in the 16-18.5 °C SST range and 97% were in the 0.4-0.9 JSD range. These ranges of SST and JSD are optimum ranges. These cloud-free SST/JSD analyses clearly demonstrate the seasonal north-south movement of the optimum SST and JSD band, which corresponds to the North Subtropical Front in the southern Indian Ocean. Monthly maps of joint probability density (JPD) with the optimum ranges of SST and JSD revealed that high CPUEs are located in the narrow bands with high JPD (>50%).  相似文献

Categorical time series regression was applied to 55 fish stocks in the Potomac, Hudson, Narragansett, Delaware, and Connecticut estuaries for the period 1929–1975. Interannual variability in catch per unit effort (CPUE) was related to CPUE, hydrographic variables, and pollution variables, lagged back in time to represent the conditions contributing to the multiple ages comprising each fishery. Hydrographic variables included water temperature and flow in the estuary– and, for offshore spawning stocks, wind direction and magnitude–during the months of spawning and early life stage development. Pollution variables included measures of dissolved oxygen conditions in the estuaries, volume of material dredged, and sewage loading (or human population). Lagged CPUE, hydrographic variables, and pollution variables all played important roles in explaining historical variability in CPUE. Lagged CPUE was significant in 45 of 55 stocks generally accounting for 5–35% of the variability. Lagged hydrographic variables were significant in 53 of 55 stocks, explaining an additional 5–40% of the variability unaccounted for by lagged CPUE. Lagged pollution variables were significant in 35 of 55 stocks, generally accounting for an additional 5–30% of the variability not explained by lagged CPUE and hydrographic variables. Results did not exhibit expected patterns of consistency in the importance of lagged CPUE for a species across estuaries or consistency in the importance of pollution variables across estuaries. Results did exhibit the expected north-to-south longitudinal pattern in the importance of timing of the hydrographic variables, the months of importance being one or two months later in more northerly estuaries. Higher-order interaction effects were important in almost all stocks that were well-modeled by categorical time series regression. Of the 30 stocks with final regression models having R2 > 0.55, 26 stocks involved significant interaction effects, five had only significant interaction effects (no significant main effects), and 20 stocks had significant interactions involving variables not significant as main effects. The difficulties involved in analyzing long-term trends in fish populations and partitioning variability between natural and anthropogenic sources are discussed.  相似文献

We tested whether variations in stock characteristics (spawner and smolt abundance) and biotic conditions (prey variability, predation, competition) during the early marine period explained variations in the return of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) to Great Central and Sproat lakes, adjacent lakes on the west coast of Vancouver Island. There are two freshwater age groups in each lake; fish spend 1 or 2 yrs in freshwater after hatching. We tested the influences of stock and biotic factors on the return of each of the two age groups from each of the two lakes. Results of regression analyses showed that prey biomass variability best explained the variation in return for all lake‐age groups. Euphausiid (Thysanoessa spinifera) and cladoceran (Evadne) prey biomass variability explained between 0.75 and 0.95 (adjusted R2) of the variation in return. There appear to be instances of a mismatch between the seasonality of prey productivity and the apparent critical period of feeding for juvenile sockeye.  相似文献

Basic biological parameters of cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, in the English Channel are described from samples of commercial and research vessel landings made between April 1994 and September 1995. There was a significant difference between the length–weight relationship of male and female cuttlefish. Growth of both sexes was rapid and seasonal during the last 12 months of life. Males grew faster than females, and reached larger overall lengths and weights. Most males reached maturity before the start of their second winter, although the testis continued to develop until spawning took place the following spring. Female maturation began later and was more prolonged such that it was completed towards the end of the second winter. Adults of both sexes spawned after the second winter between late March and July. Commercial landings data showed spawning cuttlefish initially arrived on inshore grounds in the western Channel, but slightly later and in greater numbers on the inshore grounds of the middle and eastern Channel. The weight and value of cuttlefish landings made by UK vessels in the Channel increased greatly between the mid 1980s and the mid 1990s such that cuttlefish are now a major part of the earnings for several fisheries. The most important fisheries were the offshore beam trawls, and inshore otter trawls and nets. The exploitation pattern of each fishery is described from quarterly samples of commercial landings taken between April 1994 and March 1996. Each exploitation pattern is shown to be a function of the region fished, the catching gear employed, and the growth and migrations of the cuttlefish population. Some implications for stock management are discussed.  相似文献

Spatial variability can confound accurate estimates of catch per unit effort (CPUE), especially in highly migratory species. The incorporation of spatial structure into fishery stock assessment models should ultimately improve forecasts of stock biomass. Here, we describe a nonlinear time series model for producing spatially explicit forecasts of CPUE that does not require ancillary environmental or demographic data, or specification of a model functional form. We demonstrate this method using spatially resolved (1° × 1° cells) CPUE time series of North Pacific albacore in the California Current System. The spatial model is highly significant (P < 0.00001) and outperforms two spatial null models. We then create a spatial forecast map for years beyond the range of data. Such approaches can guide spatial management of resources and provide a complement to more data‐intensive, highly parameterized population dynamics and ecosystem models currently in use.  相似文献

We describe the seasonal migrations of Argentine chub mackerel ( Scomber japonicus ) into the fishing ground in relation to sea surface temperature conditions and analyse the temperature evolution during the fishing season on the basis of 1955–97 time-series. The upper temperature limit for the presence of schools was around 19°C. At higher values, most schools leave coastal waters (< 50 m) for the shelf. An inverse relationship was observed between catches per unit of effort (CPUE) of the inshore fishery and sea surface temperature. The highest standardized CPUE values corresponded to temperatures lower than 19°C. Above this temperature, the probability of obtaining a standardized CPUE higher than 1 was extremely low, and the standard deviations were minimal. The economic benefit from catches was also analysed through the different months of the fishing season. It was found that the mean benefit corresponding to temperatures lower than 19°C exceeded approximately 15 times that obtained at higher temperatures. A simple fishing strategy was proposed to the commercial fleet in order to improve the economic benefit of the catches. The migratory pattern followed by mackerel during the spawning period was also analysed in relationship to other environmental factors like food availability. Zooplankton composition, size structure and abundance in coastal and shelf waters are described, and their implications for feeding ecology of larvae and adults of the species are discussed.  相似文献

Catch per unit effort (CPUE) is often used as an index of relative abundance in fisheries stock assessments. However, the trends in nominal CPUE can be influenced by many factors in addition to stock abundance, including the choice of fishing location and target species, and environmental conditions. Consequently, catch and effort data are usually ‘standardized’ to remove the impact of such factors. Standardized CPUE for bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus, caught by the Taiwanese distant-water longline fishery in the western and central Pacific Ocean (WCPO) for 1964–2004 were derived using three alternative approaches (GLM, GAM and the delta approach), and sensitivity was explored to whether catch-rates of yellowfin tuna and albacore tuna are included in the analyses. Year, latitude, and the catch-rate of yellowfin explained the most of the deviance (32–49%, depending on model configuration) and were identified consistently among methods, while trends in standardized catch-rate differed spatially. However, the trends in standardized catch-rates by area were found to be relatively insensitive to the approach used for standardization, including whether the catch-rates of yellowfin and albacore were included in the analyses.  相似文献
