Histological properties from the longissimus (LD) and semimembranosus (SM) muscles of 51 wether and ewe lambs from Hampshire rams and two ewe genetic types (SR, 1/2 Suffolk and 1/2 Rambouillet, and FS, 1/2 Finnish Landrace and 1/2 Southdown) and three slaughter live weights (32, 41 and 50 kg) were compared. Fibers in both muscles were classified as beta R (red), alpha R (intermediate) or alpha W (white). All LD muscle fiber types from FS ewe lambs increased in diameter from 32 to 41 kg, but decreased in diameter from 41 to 50 kg. Also, this quadratic effect with slaughter weight was found in alpha R and alpha W fibers from the SM muscle of FS wether and ewe lambs. However, diameters of alpha R and alpha W fibers from SR wether and ewe lambs and beta R fibers from SR ewe lambs increased linearly in the SM muscle with increasing slaughter weight. As slaughter weight increased, the proportion of alpha R fibers decreased in both the LD and SM muscles for SR wether and FS wether and ewe lambs. Concurrent with the increase in slaughter weight and decrease in alpha R fiber percentage, the proportion of alpha W fibers increased in the LD muscle of SR wether lambs, the SM muscle of SR ewe lambs and both muscles of FS wether and ewe lambs. Genetic type and sex groups, except SR ewe lambs, support the theory of transformation of alpha R to alpha W fibers with increasing slaughter weights. Fat-cell diameters increased in both muscles of SR wether and FS ewe lambs with increasing slaughter weights. Increases in fat traits of lamb carcasses were related to increases in red-fiber size. Alpha red fiber numbers were inversely related (P less than .05) to alpha W fiber numbers in both the LD and SM muscles (r = -.83 and -.79). The proportion of alpha R to alpha W fibers might be used as an indicator of physiological maturity for lambs.

Twenty-one wether lambs averaging 30.0 kg were utilized in a study to determine the influence of level of muscular activity (via electrical stimulation) on metabolism of amino acids and glucose of isolated-perfused hind limbs. Treatments consisted of: (1) control, (2) low electrical stimulation and (3) high electrical stimulation. Mean perfusion flow rate was unaffected by treatment or time of perfusion. Perfusion pressure and hematocrit were increased (P less than .05) by stimulation. Glucose levels decreased from a pretreatment average of 44.7 to 41.3, 26.8 and 20.0 mg/dl for treatments 1 to 3, respectively. Lactic acid levels increased from the pretreatment mean of 37.7 to 46.7, 63.8 and 69.4 mg/dl, respectively. Plasma-free fatty acids were utilized from the perfusate at .84, .76 and .68 meq X liter-1 X min-1, respectively. Perfusate urea N levels were unaffected by treatment or time of sampling, but perfusate ammonia levels increased in all treatments (ammonia levels for treatments 1 to 3 increased by .50, 1.09 and 1.47 mg/dl, respectively). Perfusate amino acid changes suggested a flux of some amino acids from muscle to perfusate due to electrical stimulation, but perfusate branched chain amino acid concentrations decreased in all treatment groups. Fifty microcuries of 14C-lysine were included in the initial perfusate. Total perfusate radioactivity in all treatments declined with time, reflective of lysine uptake by the muscle. Total perfusate lysine concentration changed less markedly, suggesting that muscle is contributing to maintenance of plasma amino acid levels.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Two experiments were conducted with ruminally fistulated wether lambs to determine the effect of lactic acid addition to a hay diet on rumen lactate metabolism, blood acid-base status and subsequent adaptation to a high concentrate diet. In Exp. 1, lambs were fed mature brome hay (H), H plus 5% (w/w) D,L lactic acid (H5L) or H plus 10% lactic acid (H10L) (three lambs per treatment) for 14 days (phase I) then switched to a 90% concentrate diet for 2 days (phase II). In Exp. 2, lambs were fed alfalfa-brome hay (H) (six lambs), H plus 2.5% lactic acid (H2.5L) (six lambs) or H plus 5% lactic acid (H5L) (four lambs) during phase I, then switched to a 70% concentrate diet (3 days) followed by a 90% concentrate diet (10 days) (phase II). During both experiments rumen fluid samples were taken periodically for pH and lactate analyses and in vitro L- or D-lactate disappearance (IVLD) studies. Blood samples were taken to measure acid-base status, serum lactate, and serum calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Dietary lactic acid enhanced IVLD during phase I of both experiments. L and D isomer IVLD rates were similar and followed zero-order kinetics. In Exp. 2, IVLD increased rapidly during phase II in response to increased concentrate level in the diet; the enhanced rates of H2.5L and H5L lambs were sustained for the first 3 days of phase II. Blood data from both experiments indicated a deleterious effect of dietary lactic acid on blood acid-base balance; however, this treatment effect was not manifested in any symptoms of acute acidosis. There was a decrease (P less than .05) in serum calcium during phase II of both experiments. In Experiment 1, serum calcium increased linearly (P less than .05) in response to dietary lactic acid level. In Exp. 1, rumen fluid total lactate and L-lactate were lower (P less than .05) for H5L vs H lambs during phase II. However, all lambs in Exp. 1 experienced acute acidosis; four of the nine lambs subsequently died. There was evidence of acidosis in Exp. 2, but there were no clear treatment effects during phase II on rumen fluid pH or lactate, or feed intake. All lambs adapted to the high concentrate diets as evidenced by rumen lactate levels and feed intakes. In both experiments, the proportion of L-lactate in rumen fluid decreased from almost 100 to about 50% of total lactate by the end of phase II.

A 60-d trial was conducted to determine effects of A1-citrate and citric acid on tissue mineral composition in wether lambs. Eighteen crossbred, yearling wether lambs equipped with ruminal cannulas were fed a diet containing low (.12%) Mg and high (2.87%) K (DM basis) and were allotted to three treatments: 1) control; 2) 2,000 micrograms A1 as A1-citrate/g of diet DM and 3) citric acid equivalent to the citrate in treatment 2. Treatments were administered in 200 ml of deionized water twice daily in divided doses via ruminal cannula. At the end of 60 d, wethers were slaughtered and samples of rib and tibia bone, liver, kidney, brain, spleen, pancreas, parathyroid and pituitary gland were analyzed for mineral concentration. Concentrations of A1 increased (P less than .05) in rib, tibia, liver, kidney, spleen and pituitary gland and tended to increase in brain (P less than .13) in wethers treated with A1-citrate compared to citric acid. Magnesium was decreased in rib (P less than .01) and tended to be decreased in pituitary gland (P less than .15), whereas Ca tended to be decreased in pancreas (P less than .07), kidney (P less than .11) and parathyroid (P less than .10) by A1-citrate treatment compared to citric acid. Potassium decreased (P less than .01) in liver, Fe increased (P less than .05) in kidney, Zn decreased in pituitary (P less than .05) and tended to decrease in pancreas (P less than .10) due to A1-citrate but not citric acid.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Carcass data from more than 4,400 Southdown x Romney ewe and wether lambs collected over a 16-yr period were analyzed for the effects of sex, rearing status, and growth rate. Ewe lambs grew more slowly than wethers and had .78 kg less carcass weight at the same age. The carcass weight advantage for wethers was nearly all caused by heavier fat-free weight. Based on fat depths, the fat on ewe lambs was distributed in more anterior and ventral parts of the carcass relative to wether lambs. Lambs reared as twins had 1.73 kg less carcass weight and correspondingly reduced carcass measurements compared with lambs reared as singles. Sex and rearing status interacted for some traits. However, in no case was a significant sex difference reversed in single- and twin-related lambs. Growth rate effects were determined by regressing average change in carcass measurements on average carcass weight gain over a 5-wk period. When carcass weight remained constant over a 5-wk period, fat weight increased by .12 kg, fat-free weight and muscle measurements decreased, and bone lengths increased. For each kilogram of increase in 5-wk carcass weight gain, the marginal increase in fat weight was .41 kg and that of fat-free weight was .59 kg. At the average 5-wk carcass weight gain of 1.4 kg, fat and fat-free gains were As carcass weight gain increased above 1.4 kg, fat-free gain exceeded fat gain.

Targhee x Hampshire lambs (average BW 23 +/- 1 kg) were used in two experiments to determine the effects of finishing on concentrate with an anabolic implant or forage grazing after concentrate feeding on growth, organ and viscera weights, and carcass tissue accretion. In Exp. 1 and 2 lambs were penned by sex and assigned for slaughter at initial (23 kg), intermediate (37 kg), or end BW (ewes, 47.7; wethers 50.4 kg). From 23 to 37 kg BW, lambs were fed all-concentrate diets in drylot (DL) or grazed on alfalfa (ALF). Experiment 1 was a 2 x 2 factorial with 28 lambs; factors were wether vs ewe lambs and unimplanted vs DL implanted with trenbolone acetate-estradiol benzoate. There were no differences in organ and viscera weights due to implant status. However, ADG (P < .03) and lean gain (P < .02) were greater for implanted than for unimplanted wethers (507 vs 357 g and 1,314 vs 656 g, respectively). Ewes did not respond to the implant. Fat accretion was not affected by implantation. Experiment 2 was a 2 x 3 factorial with 42 lambs; factors were wether vs ewe lambs and drylot during growing and finishing phases (DL-DL) vs drylot during growing and alfalfa grazing during finishing (DL-ALF) vs alfalfa grazing during growing and finishing phases (ALF-ALF). In Exp. 2, ADG of DL-DL lambs was greater (P < .01) than ADG of DL-ALF or ALF-ALF lambs. Lambs on ALF-ALF had smaller (P < .05) livers and rumen/reticulum weights but heavier (P < .04) kidney, omasum, small and large intestine, and cecum weights than those on DL. In Exp. 2, DL-ALF and ALF-ALF lambs had overall hindsaddle lean gain equal to those on DL-DL with less mesenteric fat and 100 g less separable fat. Finishing lambs on alfalfa reduced fat accretion without decreasing lean accretion, whereas trenbolone acetate implants for lambs fed concentrate increased BW gain and lean accretion without affecting fat accretion.

Acute changes in blood flow in pigs infused with beta-adrenergic agonists
Previous results indicate that clenbuterol decreases carcass adipose tissue accretion when administered to pigs but does not appear to stimulate the adipose tissue beta-adrenergic receptor. Clenbuterol increases plasma free fatty acid concentration when acutely infused in vivo, suggesting an indirect affect. One possible indirect effect is that clenbuterol could change blood flow to adipose tissue. Blood flow was measured with radiolabeled microspheres in tissues from pigs before and after infusion of a beta-adrenergic agonist for 30 min. High probability levels (up to P less than .2) were used to indicate trends due to extreme variability. Infusion of isoproterenol increased heart rate, plasma free fatty acid concentration and blood flow at many adipose tissue sites and at a few skeletal muscle sites. Infusion of isoproterenol decreased blood pressure. Infusion of clenbuterol increased heart rate and tended to increase blood flow to several skin and adipose tissue sites slightly. The results suggest that increased adipose tissue blood flow may contribute to the accelerated release of free fatty acids when clenbuterol is infused acutely in vivo.

Effects of dietary clenbuterol on metabolism of the hindquarters in steers
The objective of this study was to measure acute (d 1) and chronic (d 9) effects of dietary clenbuterol on heart rate, blood flow, oxygen uptake, and net uptake/release of metabolites in the hindquarters of growing steers. The design was a single reversal with two 9-d periods of control or 8 mg clenbuterol/d with 5 d between periods. Within 2 h of initial consumption of 2 mg clenbuterol (d 1), heart rate and blood flow doubled and arterial plasma concentrations of glucose, L-lactate and nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) increased, whereas alpha-NH2 N and NH3 concentrations decreased, demonstrating an acute response. Uptake of oxygen increased and net uptake of alpha-NH2 N decreased. Net release of both L-lactate and NEFA increased. On d 9, there were no acute responses to clenbuterol consumption; however, heart rate, blood flow, and NEFA concentration remained chronically elevated, and plasma concentrations of acetate and propionate decreased compared with control feeding. Net uptake of alpha-NH2 N, oxygen and release of L-lactate by the hindquarters chronically increased on d 9 of clenbuterol feeding. Changes in both blood flow and arteriovenous (AV) concentration difference contributed to changes in uptake/release. The chronic metabolic changes and oxygen uptake were consistent with increased N retention in the hindquarters through increased protein synthesis, decreased use of acetate and increased reliance on NEFA for cellular energy. In conclusion, the data show that the perturbation of homeostatic regulation by dietary clenbuterol on d 1 evolved to establishment of homeorhetic regulation by d 9 that is consistent with increased skeletal protein accretion in growing steers.

Administration of growth promotants with estrogenic activity via hastening closure of the growth plate could have an economic impact on lambs because closure results in ovine carcasses being classified as yearlings. Twelve wether lambs approximately 12 mo old were given silastic implants filled with estradiol-17 beta and allotted randomly to be slaughtered 30, 60, 90, or 220 d after implantation to determine time of growth plate closure in relation to date of implanting. Seven comparable wethers not implanted served as controls. Four wethers implanted at 2 mo of age and slaughtered 220 d later also were included. Implanted wethers had serum concentrations of estradiol averaging 13.9 pg/ml over the 220-d implant period; controls averaged 2.7 pg/ml. Estradiol implants increased carcass maturity scores but fat deposition was not altered. Growth plate widths decreased (P less than .05) as wethers grew older and implants were in place for longer periods of time. Metacarpal growth plates in 12-mo-old lambs were completely ossified 220 d after implanting, but control wethers and wethers implanted at 2 mo maintained growth plate widths. Neither metacarpal nor metatarsal bone lengths differed (P less than .05) between control and implanted wethers. Growth plate ossification was not complete until 570 d of age in implanted lambs, even though bone length had stopped increasing by 408 d. Therefore, even though estradiol and other growth stimulants with estrogenic activity increase rate of ossification of the metacarpal growth plate, bone length or mature size is not limited.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of CaCl2 infusion in overcoming the toughness of meat associated with dietary administration of a beta- adrenergic agonist (BAA) to lambs. Thirty-two crossbred (1/2 Finnsheep X 1/4 Dorset X 1/4 Rambouillet) wether lambs were randomly assigned to receive 0 or 4 ppm BAA (L644,969; Merck, Sharpe and Dohme Research Laboratories) in a completely mixed, high-concentrate diet for 6 wk. Animals were slaughtered in two groups of 16. At each slaughter time half of each group (0 or 4 ppm BAA) was randomly assigned to CaCl2 infusion. Feeding the BAA decreased (P less than .05) fat thickness, kidney-pelvic fat, yield grade, and marbling and increased (P less than .05) dressing percentage, lean firmness, leg score, and biceps femoris weight. Weight of biceps femoris was 32.8% greater in BAA-fed lambs. Treated, but not infused, lambs were significantly less tender than control lambs after 1, 7, and 14 d of postmortem storage. At 24 h postmortem, BAA-fed lambs had higher (P less than .05) cathepsin B, calcium-dependent protease-II (CDP-II), and CDP inhibitor activities. Calcium chloride infusion increased marbling, decreased lean firmness, increased lean color score, and increased dressing percentage (P less than .05). Infusion of carcasses with CaCl2 decreased (P less than .05) shear force at all postmortem times. Infusion of carcasses with CaCl2 had no effect on cathepsins B and B + L activities, but it had a significant effect on CDP-I, CDP-II, and CDP inhibitor activities.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Sixty-four white-faced rams and wethers were dressed with the aid of a commercial pelt puller. The effects of age, castration, and season on difficulty of pelt removal and pelt damage were evaluated. Lambs were divided into two age groups (5 and 12 mo) within gender (ram and whether) and season (spring and fall). A greater force (P less than .05) was required to remove pelts from rams than from wethers in both 5- and 12-mo-old groups. Older lambs slaughtered in the fall required more force (P less than .05) to remove their pelts than did those slaughtered in the spring, but differences by season did not exist for 5-mo-old lambs. The difference between rams and wethers in percentage of live weight that was closely shorn pelt weight was not significant (P greater than .05). The area of grain crack in the flank expressed as a percentage of total area of the skin was lower (P less than .05) for skins from 5-mo-old lambs and ram lambs than it was for skins from 12-mo-old lambs and wether lambs, respectively. Factors involved in difficulty of pelt removal in ram lambs included crosscut shoulder weight, fat firmness, and carcass weight. Difficulty of pelt removal in wether lambs was best predicted by including crosscut shoulder weight and bodywall thickness in multiple regression equations.

Thirty-two Suffolk wether lambs were fed for 84 d in a 2 x 2 factorial experiment using two levels of dietary protein (9.0 to 12.1% CP, low protein, LP; or 12.8 to 14.4% CP, high protein, HP) and supplemental Cr (none, C; or 400 ppb Cr as chromium tripicolinate, Cr). At 14- to 21-d intervals, lambs were weighed, and jugular blood samples were collected. Mean ADG and carcass weight (P > .10) did not differ. In lambs fed HP, Cr reduced liver weight and increased kidney weight (P < .01). Lambs fed HP had elevated plasma urea N (PUN; P < .01) and albumin (P < .04). During an i.v. epinephrine challenge on d 43, plasma cortisol declined in lambs fed Cr (Cr x time, P < .03) and in lambs fed LP (CP x time, P < .001). An i.v. glucose tolerance test conducted 3 h later showed that supplemental Cr decreased glucose clearance rate in lambs fed HP (CP x Cr, P < .10) but not in lambs fed LP. On d 62, PUN was increased in lambs fed HP (P < .001) between 0 and 3 h postprandial, and there was a Cr x CP interaction (P < .04). Postprandial plasma NEFA declined with Cr vs C (Cr x time, P < .07) and with HP vs LP (CP x time, P < .10). By d 66, lambs fed Cr had an elevated (P < .03) blood platelet and fibrinogen content. Chromium increased erythrocyte count in lambs fed HP (Cr x CP, P < .08), and isolated peripheral lymphocytes had greater blastogenic response to 4 microg/mL of phytohemagglutinin (Cr x CP, P < .001). The lymphocyte response to pokeweed mitogen (.2 microg/mL) was reduced in lambs fed Cr (P < .10). In the present experiment, Cr supplementation had minimal and inconsistent effects on production and metabolic criteria of lambs.

To determine effects of clenbuterol (CB) on muscle protein turnover and growth hormone (GH) secretion, 16 crossbred wether lambs (14.4 kg) were randomized into two groups designated to receive daily oral boluses of gelatin capsules containing corn starch with either 0 (control, CTL) or 1.87 mg/kg body weight CB for either 14 (n = 8) or 28 d (n = 8). This calculates to be approximately 40 mg CB/kg diet. Lambs had ad libitum access to a 16% crude protein corn-soy diet and feed consumption (FC) was measured. After 14 and 28 d, lambs were slaughtered and semitendinosus (ST), longissimus (LD) and brachialis (BR) muscles were exercised, weighed and analyzed for protein (TP) content. For 6 h prior to slaughter of 28-d lambs, 2.5 microCi L-[U-14C]tyrosine/kg was infused intravenously, blood was sampled and plasma was analyzed for specific radioactivity of tyrosine. Plasma GH concentrations were assessed by radioimmunoassay. No differences due to treatment were found in FC, rate of gain or GH concentrations. Semitendinosus and BR weights of control lambs at 14 d did not differ between treatments. At 28 d, ST and BR weights of control lambs (58.8 and 18.5 g, respectively) were less (P less than .10) than those of lambs treated with CB (74.3 and 23.1 g, respectively). The TP per ST and BR at 28 d for control lambs was 71.5 and 85.1% (P less than .10) that of muscles of lambs treated with CB. Fractional protein synthesis rates (FSR) of the BR (9.4 vs 6.1%/d) and total protein synthesized in ST muscle per day (1.4 vs .8 g) were elevated (P less than .10) in lambs treated with CB compared to controls. These data suggest that the increased fractional accretion rate observed in lambs treated with CB for 28 d was caused by increased FSR.

Two metabolism trials were conducted with 12 crossbred wether lambs, each surgically equipped with a ruminal catheter and abomasal and ileal cannulae, to study the effect of K infusion in different sites of the digestive tract on site of absorption and flow of minerals. The treatments consisted of the infusion of 33.6, 12.0 or 12.0 g K/d as bicarbonate into either the rumen, abomasum or ileum, respectively. Each trial consisted of a minimum 5-d preliminary period, five 3-d collection periods to determine mineral balance and a 6-d sampling period to determine mineral flow and site of absorption. Chromic oxide was incorporated into the diet for use as a marker. Magnesium was absorbed primarily from the preintestinal region. Ruminal infusion of K tended to decrease preintestinal Mg absorption. Absorption of Mg in the entire tract was decreased (P less than .05) 43% when K was infused into the rumen. There was a slight absorption of Mg in the small intestine, followed by a net secretion into the large intestine. Serum Mg levels tended to be depressed in lambs infused with K intraruminally. Calcium flow from the preintestinal region was decreased (P less than .05) by infusion of K into the rumen. Only lambs infused with K in the rumen had a net secretion of Na into the small intestine. The large intestine was the primary site of net Na absorption for ruminal-infused lambs. Phosphorus flow from the preintestinal region was decreased (P less than .05) by infusion of K into the rumen. Potassium flow from both the preintestine and small intestine was increased (P less than .05) by ruminal K infusion. The infusion of K into the rumen, abomasum or ileum increased (P less than .05) the total absorption of K, with the small intestine being the major absorptive site. The infusion of potassium bicarbonate into the rumen of sheep raised (P less than .05) the pH of the ruminal contents 15%. Ruminal infusion of K depresses Mg absorption, while the infusion of K into the abomasum or ileum does not affect Mg absorption. Therefore, the role of K in grass tetany may be via this depression of Mg absorption.

Data are presented from a number of experiments which investigated the effect of hormonal anabolic compounds on growth and metabolism in cattle and sheep. The anabolic agents used were trenbolone acetate, hexoestrol oestradiol-17 and zeranol, alone or in combination. Responses to these compounds which were given by implant or injection were studied in bulls, steers, heifers, lactating cows and wether lambs. Particular measurements were made of growth rate, food conversion efficiency, carcase weight and composition and concentrations of blood metabolites and hormones.

Sixty-four lambs in North Sumatra were used in a factorial experiment comprising two systems of management (grazing and stall-feeding), four levels of legume supplementation (0, 250, 500 and 1,000 g/d Pueraria javanica) and two anthelmintic treatments (none and albendazole every four weeks). The experiment lasted five months. The mortality rate for lambs not given anthelmintic was 28%, significantly higher (P less than 0.05) than for animals given anthelmintic which had zero mortality. Anthelmintic treatment increased growth rate from only 2 g/d to 29 g/d (P less than 0.05) and reduced faecal egg count from 1,700 epg to 270 epg. When not given anthelmintic grazing lambs had a higher mortality rate (38%) than stall-fed lambs (19%) but this difference was not significant. When given anthelmintic grazing lambs has a slightly higher growth rate (32 g/d) than stall-fed lambs (26 g/d). System of management had no apparent effect on egg count. Legume supplementation reduced the egg count of lambs not given anthelmintic but had no significant effect on mortality or growth rate.

Two digestion and slaughter trials were conducted to evaluate the influence of limestone level on site and extent of digestion and rumen fermentation in lambs. In trial 1, 11 wether lambs (avg wt 40.7 kg) were fed 75% concentrate diets supplemented with .6, 1.5 or 3.0% limestone (.6,1.2,1.7% dietary Ca, respectively) in a completely randomized design. Dry matter intake increased linearly (P less than .10) with limestone level; therefore, other data were analyzed with dry matter intake as a covariate. Total tract organic matter digestion decreased linearly (P less than .05) with increasing limestone but dry matter and fiber digestion were not affected by limestone. Ruminal digestion of dry matter and organic matter declined linearly (P less than .05) with increasing limestone. Ruminal neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestion was higher with the 1.5 than the .6 and 3.0% limestone diets (quadratic effect, P less than .05) but ruminal digestion of other fiber components was not affected by limestone. Ruminal volatile fatty acids were not affected by limestone level; however, rumen ammonia concentrations decreased linearly (P less than .05) with increasing limestone level. In trial 2, 12 wether lambs (avg wt 43.3 kg) were fed a 35% concentrate diet with .1, 1.5 or 3.0% limestone (.5, 1.2 and 1.6% dietary Ca, respectively) in a completely randomized design. Dry matter intake was not affected by limestone level, but digestibility of dry matter, organic matter and starch (P less than .10), energy, crude protein, acid detergent fiber (ADF) and cellulose (P less than .05) responded quadratically to limestone level, with increases at the 1.5% limestone level. Ruminal dry and organic matter (P less than .05), NDF (P less than .10), ADF (P less than .01), cellulose (P less than .05) and starch (P less than .05) digestion responded quadratically to limestone level with higher values at the 1.5% limestone level. Proportions of ruminal propionate increased linearly (P less than .01) with increasing limestone level and acetate: propionate ratio declined linearly (P less than .01) with limestone level.

Apparent digestibility and nutrient utilization were studied in a digestion and balance trial with 30 wether lambs (BW 32 kg). Lambs were blocked by weight and allotted randomly to five diets with ratios of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) to 'Lathco' flatpea (Lathyrus sylvestris L.) hay of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100. Alfalfa was harvested in the early bloom stage and flatpea was harvested in the vegetative stage. Digestibilities of DM, NDF, ADF, cellulose, hemicellulose, and energy decreased linearly (P less than .05) as the level of flatpea hay increased to values of 53.3, 32.4, 39.9, 46.0, 40.5, and 52.5%, respectively, for 100% flatpea hay. Nitrogen retention (9 to 15% of intake) was not affected by level of flatpea hay. Ruminal pH, NH3 N, and blood urea N increased linearly (P less than .001) as level of flatpea increased in the diet, apparently a reflection of dietary N level. Calcium excretion decreased linearly (P less than .01) with increased proportions of flatpea hay and was related to dietary intake of Ca. Apparent absorption and retention showed a cubic effect (P less than .05). No clinical signs of toxicity were observed in any of the lambs during the 20-d metabolism trial. Vegetative flatpea is potentially valuable as a forage for feeding ruminants.

In the first of two experiments, four wether lambs (BW = 26.8 kg) and four wether Angora goats (BW = 31.7 kg) were used in two simultaneous 4 x 4 Latin squares to study the influence of condensed tannins (CT) on nutrient usage and concentrations of serum urea N, somatotropin (GH), and insulin (INS) when the animals were fed low-quality diets containing mountain mahogany (MM; Cercocarpus montanus) leaves. Diets were 8% CP and contained 25% or 50% MM (with hay or straw, respectively), either untreated or treated with polyethylene glycol (PEG; molecular weight 3,350) to reduce total reactive CT. Diets treated with PEG and 25% MM diets had less (P less than .05) CT than diets without PEG or those with 50% MM. Diets containing 50% MM resulted in greater N balance and lower serum urea N (P less than .01) than 25% MM diets. Concentrations of GH and INS were similar in animals fed the 25% and 50% MM diets. Reducing CT by adding PEG did not affect N balance or improve nutrient digestion by lambs or goats fed low-quality diets. In Exp. 2, four wether lambs (BW = 28.4 kg) were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square and fed the same diets as animals in Exp. 1 to study the influence of CT on ruminal fermentation and digesta kinetics. Dietary PEG treatment did not affect digesta kinetics except for a 30% increase in ruminal volume; 50% MM diets had faster particulate passage rates (P less than .05) than 25% MM diets. Ruminal ammonia N was greater (P less than .01) in lambs fed PEG-containing or 25% MM diets; however, rate of in situ NDF disappearance was not reduced by the lower ammonia N in the latter diets.
