The West Indian hummingbird, Eulampis jugularis, maintained its body temperature in torpor at 18 degrees to 20 degrees C over an ambient temperature range of 2.5 degrees to 18 degrees C. At ambient below 18 degrees C oxygen consumption during torpor increased linearly with decreasing temperature. Thermal conductances were the same for resting and torpid Eulampis regulating their body temperatures at 40 degrees and 18 degrees C, respectively.  相似文献

Panting in Sauromalus obesus is effective enough to keep deep body temperature (T(C)) and brain temperature (T(B)) below an ambient temperature of 45 degrees C for extended periods of time and has a greater cooling effect on the brain than on the remainder of the body. Six animals maintained T(C) and T(B) 0.9 degrees C (+/- 0.08 standard error) and 2.7 degrees C (+/- 0.2 standard error) respectively lower than the ambient temperature of 45 degrees C. It is possible that intracranial vascular shunts play a role in cranial cooling during panting.  相似文献

The isotope effect in the solution of helium in water from 0 degrees to 40 degrees C has been determined by microgasometric measurements of the solubilities of pure helium-3 and helium4. At 0 degrees C helium-3 is less soluble than helium-4 in both distilled water and sea-water by 1.2 percent. The observed fractionation factor is 0.988+/-0.002 at 0 degrees C and appears to decrease with increasing temperature at the rate of 0.0001 per degree Centigrade, although the existence of this trend is of limited statistical certainty. The measured isotope effect is in agreement with the ratio of helium-3 to helium-4 in surface ocean water reported by Clarke, Beg, and Craig.  相似文献

The spadix of Symplocarpus foetidus L. maintains an internal temperature 15 degrees to 35 degrees C above ambient air temperatures of -15 degrees to +15 degrees C. For at least 14 days it consumes oxygen at a rate comparable to that of homeothermic animals of equivalent size. Temperature regulation is accomplished by variations in respiratory rate.  相似文献

Cell membranes often are patchy, composed of lateral domains. These domains may be formed by barriers within or on either side of the membrane bilayer. Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class 1 molecules that were either transmembrane- (H-2Db) or glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored (Qa2) were labeled with antibody-coated gold particles and moved across the cell surface with a laser optical tweezers until they encountered a barrier, the barrier-free path length (BFP). At room temperature, the BFPs of Qa2 and H-2Db were 1.7 +/- 0.2 and 0.6 +/- 0.1 (micrometers +/- SEM), respectively. Barriers persisted at 34 degrees C, although the BFP for both MHC molecules was fivefold greater at 34 degrees C than at 23 degrees C. This indicates that barriers to lateral movement are primarily on the cytoplasmic half of the membrane and are dynamic.  相似文献

The kinetics of the Fe(2+)-Mg, order-disorder phenomenon in a highly ordered natural anthophyllite have been determined over the temperature range from 400 degrees to 720 degrees C at a pressure of 2 kilobars. At temperatures of 600 degrees C and above, equilibrium is attained by disordering as well as ordering reactions. The intracrystalline exchange is defined by a standard Gibbs free energy of 4247 +/- 54 calories per formula unit. Rate studies at 550 degrees and 500 degrees C show that equilibrium is attained by ordering but not by disordering within the same time scale and that the exchange reaction is characterized by an activation energy of approximately 55 kilocalories per formula unit. An equilibration temperature for the natural anthophyllite of 270 degrees C is determined from the termination of the ordering process owing to excessively slow reaction kinetics after approximately 10(7) years. From the rate constants of the exchange process, for different crystallization temperatures, the apparent equilibration temperature of 270 degrees C defines a maximum linear cooling rate for the rock of 1 x 10(4) degrees C per year.  相似文献

Crystals of a high-pressure form of benzene (benzene 11) were grown in the diamond-anvil pressure cell at elevated temperature and pressure from the transition of solid I to solid II. X-ray precession data were obtained from a single-crystal in the high-pressure cell. At 21 degrees C and about 25 kilobars, benzene II crystallizes in the monoclinic system with a = 5.417 +/- 0.005 angstroms (S.D.), b = 5.376 +/- 0.019 angstroms, c = 7.532 +/- 0.007 angstroms, beta = 110.00 degrees +/- 0.08 degrees , space group P2(1)/ c, Pc= 1.26 grams per cubic centimeter. The crystal structure was solved by generating all possible molecular packing configurations and calculating structure factors, reliability factors, and packing energies for each configuration. This procedure produced a unique solution for the molecular packing of benzene II.  相似文献

Speckle observations of Jupiter's satellite Io at a wavelength of 5 micrometers during July 1984 resolved the disk and showed emission from a hot spot in the Loki region. The hot spot contributed a flux approximately equal to 60 percent of that from the disk. Images reconstructed by means of the Knox-Thompson algorithm showed the spot moving across the disk as the satellite rotated. It was located at 301 degrees +/- 6 degrees west longitude, 10 degrees +/- 6 degrees north latitude, and had a radiance of (2.96 +/- 0.54) x 10(22) ergs sec(-1) cm(-1) sr(-1)/A where A is the area of the spot. For an assumed temperature of 400 K, the area of the source would be 11,400 square kilometers. An active "lava lake" similar to that seen by Voyager may be the source of the infrared emission.  相似文献

The vitrification temperature (T(g)) of water is an elusive quantity because of the great difficulty in supercooling water sufficiently without initiating its crystallization. Water depresses the vitrification temperature of glycerol (184 degrees K) monotonously, and this property has been used for derivation of an estimate of its T(g). The result, 127 degrees +/- 4 degrees K (-146 degrees +/- 4 degrees C), is the temperature below which water presumably exists as a brittle, glassy substance.  相似文献

Aqueous solutions are generally assumed to be superior electrolytic conductors because of the unique dielectric and fluid properties of water. We show that their conductivities can be matched by liquid electrolytes that contain no solvent. These are proton transfer salts that are liquid at ambient temperature. The high conductivities are due to the high fluidity and ionicity rather than some sort of Grotthus mechanism, although in certain cases a mobile proton population may make a non-negligible contribution. The highest conductivities have been obtained when both cations and anions contain protons. At 25 degrees C, values of >150 millisiemens per centimeter (mS x cm(-1)) appear possible; at 100 degrees C, 470 mS x cm(-1) has been measured. Because of the combination of high ionicity and proton exchange kinetics with low vapor pressure, the systems we describe also make excellent fuel cell electrolytes.  相似文献

The production of heat while the bumblebee is on flowers, at ambient temperatures below 24 degrees C, helps to maintain a thoracic temperature that is near the minimum for flight between flowers. The crystal structure of pyridinium hexaiodopentaargentate, (C(5)H(5)NH) Ag(5)l(6), is unique among those of the halide and chalcogenide solid electrolytes in that face-sharing iodide octahedra as well as face-sharing tetrahedra and face-sharing between octahedra and tetrahedra provide the paths for silver ion transport. There are two formula units in a hexagonal cell, space group P6/mcc (D6h(2)). At -30 degrees C, the lattice constants are a = 11.97 +/- 0.02, c = 7.41 +/- 0.01 A. The structure has three sets of sites for the silver ions. At -30 degrees C two of these sets are apparently filled with the ten silver ions per unit cell, while the third set of tetrahedrally coordinated general positions is empty. Therefore, the conductivity at this temperature is limited by the thermal excitation of the silver ions into the empty tetrahedra.  相似文献

The elastic anisotropy of MgO decreases with increasing pressure at ambient temperature, but then increases as temperature is increased at high pressure. An assumption of zero cross pressure and temperature derivatives for the elastic moduli underestimates the elastic anisotropy and overestimates the acoustic velocities of MgO at the extrapolated high-pressure and high-temperature conditions of Earth's mantle.  相似文献

The water potential of leaves in situ can be measured without temperature control with a miniature, single-junction psychrometer constructed from silver foil and attached to the leaf with a silver-impregnated, conductive coating. The temperature of the psychrometer has been found to stay within 0.025 degrees C of the temperature of a simulated leaf when the latter temperature was changing at a rate of 1 degrees C per minute. Leaf water potentials can be measured with a precision of +/- 1 bar, or better.  相似文献

【目的】通过测定环境低温诱发AS发生发展过程中缺氧诱导因子-1α表达的动态变化,初步探讨HIF-1α与AS发生发展之间的关系。【方法】100只商品代肉公雏,15d时随机分为常温对照组(22~24℃)和低温组(9~11℃)。各组在22、29、36和43d随机选取6只鸡,测定mPAP、AHI和心、肺组织中HIF-1αmRNA的表达量,试验结束后统计腹水发生率。【结果】低温组AS发生率(22%)显著高于对照组(4%)(P0.05);低温组肉鸡mPAP和AHI显著或极显著高于对照组(P0.05,P0.01);低温组肉鸡心脏HIF-1αmRNA表达量显著或极显著(P0.05,P0.01)增加;肺脏HIF-1αmRNA表达量类似于同时间点的心脏。【结论】低温诱发AS发生过程中,肉鸡心脏和肺脏HIF-1α表达量明显增加,可能参与肉鸡AS的发生发展。  相似文献

At high ambient temperatures, honeybees regulate head teriperature by evaporative cooling of regurgitated honeycrop contents. Thoracic temperature is secondarily stabilized as heat flows from thorax to head by means of passive conduction and physiological facilitation resulting from accelerated blood flow. The mechanism permits flight at the extraordinarily high ambient temperature of 46 degrees C without overheating the head and thorax despite prodigious amounts of heat produced as a by-product of flight metabolism. In contrast, at low ambient temperatures, thoracic rather than head temperature is regulated; no liquid is regurgitated, and the head is heated passively by conduction both in flight and while stationary.  相似文献

Two temperature profiles recorded by a sensitive bathythermograph at the Ross Ice Shelf Project site (82 degrees 22.5'S, 168 degrees 37.5'W) are presented. From the shape of the profiles it is concluded that an inflow of water at intermediate depths provides a source of heat to drive a regime in which ice is melted from the interface at a depth of 360 meters. Melting maintains the temperature of a thick layer under the ice at about -2.14 degrees C, close to the ambient freezing temperature. A very well mixed layer about 35 meters thick was found at the seabed.  相似文献

Species of Pacific shallow-water fish are more tolerant of low temperatures than Atlantic species are. At high temperatures Atlantic species are more tolerant than Pacific species. For species pairs of Bathygobius differences in the tolerance of low temperatures are small and can be removed by acclimation to 23 degrees C. Differences in the tolerance to low temperature in transisthmian species of Apogon, however, are large and persist after acclimation to 23 degrees C. Some Pacific species adapt to the cooler temperatures of their habitat through increasing their rates of oxygen consumption at ambient temperatures or decreasing the dependence of oxygen uptake rate on temperature, or both.  相似文献

Direct catalytic hydration of terminal alkenes to primary alcohols would be an inexpensive route to industrially useful alcohols and a convenient synthetic route for the synthesis of terminal alcohols in general. The reaction between trans- PtHCl(PMe(3))(2) (where Me = CH(3)) and sodium hydroxide in a one-to-one mixture of water and 1-hexene yields a species that, at 60 degrees C and in the presence of the phasetransfer catalyst benzyltriethylammonium chloride, catalyzes selective hydration of 1-hexene to n-hexanol at a rate of 6.9 +/- 0.2 turnovers per hour. Hydration of 1-dodecene to n-dodecanol occurs at a rate of 8.3 +/- 0.4 turnovers per hour at 100 degrees C. Deuterium labeling experiments with trans-PtDCl(PMe(3))(2) show that hydration involves reductive elimination of a C-H bond. At low hydroxide concentrations (<8 equivalents), hydration of the water-soluble olefin 3-butene-1-ol to 1,4-butanediol exhibited a first-order dependence on hydroxide concentration for loss of catalytic activity. This suggests that hydroxide attacks the coordinated alkene slowly. At high hydroxide concentrations, the rate of catalysis was hydroxide-independent and first order in alkene. Substitution of coordinated water (k(1) = 9.3 +/- 0.5 x 10(-3) liters per mol per second) appears to be limitng under these conditions.  相似文献
