Laying fowls were fed on synthetic diets containing 49, 118, 486, 655, 1242 and 2176 mg/kg magnesium. Magnesium intake and plasma concentration were significantly correlated: 49% of the plasma Mg was diffusible. The hens fed on magnesium‐deficient diets (49 to 118 mg/kg magnesium) were hypomagnesaemic while those receiving 2176 mg/kg were hypermagnesaemic. In the deficient hens the liver showed magnesium depletion, increased calcium content and decreased fresh weight. Skeletal muscle was unaffected by the dietary variations in Mg. The magnesium concentration in the femur was positively correlated with the plasma magnesium concentration. Femurs showed a loss of magnesium and increased mineralisation (especially of the medullary bone) in deficient hens, and a net gain of magnesium in the birds receiving 2176 mg/kg magnesium. The magnesium concentrations in egg shells, albumen and yolk were also positively correlated with the plasma magnesium concentration. The shells of eggs laid by magnesium‐deficient hens were thin, a reflection, apparently, of the reduced plasma calcium levels associated with the decreased bone mobilisation. 相似文献

Several respiratory parameters were measured in five groups of hens to estimate the variation in respiratory function of the general hen population. A non-invasive technique was used to measure respiratory flow, with computer-aided analysis of the data, and the results were examined statistically. Using different groups of hens, additional information was obtained regarding possible sources of variation between individual hens, such as egg laying condition, age and health. Significant differences between individuals within the groups were observed, but there were also changes in breath-to-breath variation for individual hens. While some changes in the variation between birds were observed from one group to another, variation within individual birds made interpretation of the results difficult. Repeated measurements made on one group revealed significant changes in minute volume with time, but the changes were not related to learning. Significant interactions between hens and time of measurement occurred for certain parameters, showing that the individuals' responses changed with time in different ways. The groups of hens were compared to observe whether they represented the same or distinct populations, and were found to overlap to varying extents for different respiratory parameters. Single respiratory variables and weighted combinations of certain variables were also used to separate the groupings, as a possible diagnostic method for partitioning groups of hens. 相似文献

The lectin-binding characteristics of the epithelial lining of the thoracic air sacs of the chicken were determined. Con A, LCA and PSA bound to the apical membrane as well as to the cytoplasm distal to the nucleus of the surface epithelium, indicated the presence of a-linked mannose as well as N-acetylchitobiose-linked alpha-fucose residues in the glycoproteins. GSL I bound to the apical membrane and cytoplasm distal to the nucleus, but not to the cilia of the epithelium, where-as MPL, DBA and RCA120 bound to the apical membrane, cilia and cytoplasm, indicated the presence of a-linked N-acetylgalactosamine residues. However, neither SJA or SBA showed any binding, indicating the absence of beta anomers of galactosyl (beta1.3)N-acetylgalactosamine and beta-linked N-acetylgalactosamine residues. UEA I bound to the apical membrane and cilia, as well as to the cytoplasm of a few cells, indicated the presence of alpha-linked fucose residues. PNA bound to the apical membrane of some, but not all, surface epithelium cells, indicated the presence of galactosyl (beta1.3)N-acetylgalactosamine residues. WGA bound to the apical membrane and cilia, as well as to the cytoplasm of a few cells, indicated the presence of neuraminic acid residues. 相似文献

Fowl typhoid is a disease of adult chickens and is caused by Salmonella Gallinarum infection via the alimentary tract. The experimental reproduction of fowl typhoid per os (PO) requires artificial conditions to minimize the effect of gastric acid, and several Salmonella serovars have been known to be transmitted via the respiratory route. Therefore, we have hypothesized the existence of a respiratory route for Salmonella Gallinarum infection and have attempted to reproduce fowl typhoid via intratracheal challenge. In accordance with our hypothesis, the intratracheal challenges of Salmonella Gallinarum reproduced exactly same lesions as fowl typhoid and induced higher mortality and morbidity than those of the PO challenge. Therefore, this study represents the first reproduction of fowl typhoid via respiratory route, and our findings may be useful for understanding the transmission of Salmonella Gallinarum in the field. 相似文献

There are conflicting reports in the existing literature on the nature of the epithelial lining and the content of the supporting connective tissue of the respiratory air sacs of birds. The present study describes the light and electron microscopic structure of the thoracic air sacs of the fowl. A simple squamous epithelium lined the greater part of the thoracic air sacs. The squamous cells characteristically contained vesicles filled with lamellar or myelinoid material. Localized areas of cuboidal to columnar ciliated epithelium were randomly distributed and often associated with underlying blood vessels. Isolated ciliated cells first appeared on squamous or low cuboidal cells and increased in frequency as the cells became taller. Occasional basal and goblet cells were seen between the ciliated columnar cells. A fibrous connective tissue stroma supported the epithelium. Fine elastic fibres were particularly prevalent immediately below the epithelium. Isolated smooth muscle myocytes were present in the connective tissue stroma. A sheet of smooth muscle extended some distance into the membrane from the attachment of the latter to the body wall. Numerous small blood vessels, lymphatics and occasional nerve bundles were observed in the stroma. 相似文献

1. The effects of a complete removal of feathers from the neck and/or breast on the energy metabolism of laying hens were measured by indirect calorimetry. 2. The daily heat production of fed birds was significantly increased if feathers were removed from the entire neck plus breast region but not if the neck only or breast only were denuded. 3. Two groups of cows were sampled to study variation of mitochondrial metabolism. The first group included 10 lactating and five gestating Holstein cows, representing available phenotypic extremes for milk yield. The second group included 13 Angus, 13 Brangus and 13 Hereford cows, representing available extremes within breeds for growth breeding value ratios. Consistently poor mitochondrial samples were obtained from gestating cows; these were excluded from analyses. Linear correlations of Holstein mitochondrial respiratory activities with sire-predicted difference for milk and milk fat ranged from -.35 to .15. Correlations of dam and cow indices and cow yields for milk with acceptor-stimulated mitochondrial respiration, oxidative phosphorylation efficiency (adenosine diphosphate:oxygen ratio [ADP:O ratio]) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis rate were .25 to .48, consistently higher than for milk fat, -.06 to .17. No differences among beef breeds in mitochondrial respiration rates, coupling of respiration to phosphorylation, ADP:O ratio or ATP synthesis rate were detected by repeated measures analyses of variance. No patterns were evident among correlations of the mitochondrial characteristics and growth and milk traits in beef cattle. These initial findings indicate that variability in the mitochondrial respiratory activities measured has less relation to weaning and yearling growth traits of beef cattle than to milk yield of Holstein cattle. 相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The presence of abnormal respiratory sounds is commonly associated with obstructions of the upper respiratory tract. In order to establish their clinical significance measurements are required of both normal and abnormal respiratory sounds produced by horses exercising over-ground. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether high quality recordings of respiratory sound can be made during over-ground exercise, and to develop a convenient measurement system that can be used to obtain respiratory sounds from horses exercising in field conditions. METHODS: A range of prototypes was evaluated against the requirements that the system must be easy to use under field conditions and produce high-quality recordings of respiratory sound. The chosen design incorporated a miniature microphone and an air-flow direction sensor mounted on a lightweight plastic face mask. The mask was attached to the horse's head using nylon straps secured by velcro fastenings. Sound and flow signals were recorded on a portable minidisc player carried by the jockey. RESULTS: The system fulfilled the design criteria. High quality recordings of respiratory sounds were obtained from Thoroughbred horse exercising on a training gallop under a variety of weather conditions. Intermittently occurring abnormal sounds were readily identified from the data. CONCLUSIONS: High quality measurements of respiratory sounds during over-ground exercise can be made relatively easily. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: The system enables measurement of respiratory sounds outside a laboratory environment creating new opportunities for scientific research and clinical assessment. The study demonstrated that diagnostic systems based on respiratory sound analysis could potentially be manufactured at relatively low cost and be convenient and simple to use. 相似文献

Physical characteristics of eggs of the domestic guinea fowl, Numida meleagris galeata, were measured and compared with those of its wild counterpart and with other birds using allometric relationships. 2. The shell thickness increased and the area density of pores decreased from the blunt to the pointed end of the egg. During incubation, shell thickness decreased, but the shell diffusive conductance to water vapour (GH2O) remained constant. 3. Fresh egg mass (m0), length and breadth of the egg, GH2O and specific water vapour conductance, spGH2O (GH2O per g of m0 ), were affected by the age of the laying flock. 4. Eggs of the domestic guinea fowl were bigger and heavier than eggs of the wild one. 5. Allometry showed that guinea fowl eggs differ from those of the other birds by their greater shell thickness and density of pores. REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Due to technical implementations and lack of sensitivity, pulmonary function tests are seldom used in clinical practice. Impulse oscillometry (IOS) could represent an alternative method. OBJECTIVES: To define feasibility, methodology and repeatability of IOS, a forced oscillation technique that measures respiratory resistance (Rrs) and reactance (Xrs) from 5 to 35 Hz during spontaneous breathing, in horses. METHODS: Using 38 healthy horses, Rrs and Xrs reference values were defined and influence of individual biometrical parameters was investigated. In addition, IOS measurements of 6 horses showing clinical signs of heaves were compared to those of 6 healthy horses. RESULTS: Airtightness and minimal dead space in the facemask were prerequisites to IOS testing and standardisation of head position was necessary to avoid variations in Rrs due to modified upper airway geometry. In both healthy and diseased animals, measurements were repeatable. In standard-type breeds, the influence of the horse's size on IOS parameters was negligible. An increase in R5Hz greater than 0.10 kPa/l/sec and R5Hz>R10Hz, combined with negative values of Xrs between 5 and 20 Hz, was indicative of heaves crisis. CONCLUSIONS: IOS is a quick, minimally invasive and informative method for pulmonary function testing in healthy and diseased horses. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: IOS is a promising method for routine and/or field respiratory clinical testing in the equine species. 相似文献

Examination of the crop contents of fowls has shown that there is extensive hydrolysis of starch to sugar and that much of the sugar formed can be lost from the crop by absorption by the crop, the action of micro‐organisms or leaching from the crop. When crop contents were incubated anaerobically, lactic and acetic acids and alcohol were produced. Examination post‐mortem of crop contents from birds with “sour crops” indicated that, in addition to the formation of lactic and acetic acids, formic, propionic and butyric acids can also be formed. 相似文献
