1. Broiler chicks fed on a diet containing 500 g/kg expeller copra cake of high residual oil content not only retained less dry matter and gained less weight than those fed on a control diet with no copra, they also experienced difficulty in achieving similar food intakes. 2. Chicks given the 500 g/kg copra ration initially displayed an excited behaviour pattern, which may have developed out of frustration as they could neither derive adequate nourishment from their food nor increase food intakes sufficiently to allow them to achieve their genetic potential for growth. 3. Chicks however showed considerable adaptation in that efficiency of food utilisation and intakes were increased gradually; the latter appeared to be partly regulated by an increased intake of water that was associated with copra feeding. The surface area of the intestines was also increased in order to facilitate the absorption of nutrients, and greater proportions of the nutrients absorbed were converted into body weight. 4. There were no significant differences in 7-week body weights of chicks fed the control, 125 g/kg and 250 g/kg copra diets. Although weight gains at the 500 g/kg inclusion rate were lower, the carcases of these chicks had less abdominal fat and were consequently leaner.  相似文献

Concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-I, albumin, beta hydroxybutyrate, glucose and urea were measured in 12 plasma samples collected over 9 weeks from mid-August from each of 40 cows in four seasonal herds which calved from mid-July. These herds comprised Jersey or Holstein-Friesian animals, with each breed grazed at two stocking rates. Daily dry matter intakes (kg dry matter/cow/day), which were estimated from pasture assessments before and after grazing, ranged from 4% (low stocked Jersey herd) to 38% (high stocked Friesian herd) below recommended intakes for each breed of cow in peak lactation. Stocking rate was associated with a 4% reduction in liveweight for cows in the high stocked herds and a 20% reduction in daily milk production (as a proportion of the low stocked herds' liveweight and milk production). Eight cows produced at least one blood sample with a beta hydroxybutyrate concentration of more than 1.0 mmol/l. There were 42% of samples with glucose concentrations greater than 4.1 mmol/l. These two concentrations were the maximum values classified as normal for these two metabolites by the Ruakura Animal Health Laboratory. No concentrations of the other metabolites were outside their respective normal ranges. Breed, age and individual animals usually had greater effects on the average metabolite concentrations than did stocking rate. The greatest effect was associated with sample day, especially for insulin-like growth factor-I and urea. A significant breed x stocking rate x sample day interaction in urea concentrations indicated that changes in the feeding value of the grazed pastures available to each herd were sufficient to produce separate fluctuating patterns in the daily average concentrations. These results showed that frequent sampling on a herd basis would be necessary to identify the significance of factors which may be contributing to sample day variation in the concentration of metabolites in the plasma of pasture-fed cows.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to examine the effects of and possible interactions between dry matter (DM) intake and feeding Fusarium toxin-contaminated wheat on ruminal fermentation, serum chemical parameters and milk yield of dairy cows. Fourteen dairy cows equipped with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were analysed. All animals were fed the same ration, the daily feed amounts being adjusted to current performance. On DM basis, the ration consisted of 60% concentrate including 55% wheat [Fusarium-contaminated wheat (mycotoxin period) or control wheat (control period)] and was completed with 40% maize and grass silage. Each cow was fed the contaminated wheat [deoxynivalenol (DON), 8.21 mg/kg DM and zearalenone (ZON), 0.09 mg/kg DM] and the control wheat (0.25 mg DON/kg DM and 51 microg ZON/kg DM). As expected, a higher organic matter (OM) intake decreased the amounts of fermented crude nutrients related to the respective intakes. An increased amount of crude protein degraded (p < 0.05) and a lower molar percentage of propionate in the rumen fluid were observed when feeding the Fusarium toxin-contaminated wheat at increased OM intakes in comparison with the control wheat. The activities of serum aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT; p < 0.001), glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH; p < 0.01) and gamma glutamyl transferase (gamma-GT; p < 0.01) increased with increasing OM intake and were not related to the mycotoxin contamination of the wheat.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to investigate feed intake, milk yield, milk composition, blood metabolites and fertility in early lactation dairy cows grazing a timothy pasture. Fourteen multiparous Holstein cows that calved between 20 May and 19 July were used over a 3‐year period. The stocking rate was 3.6–4.3 cow/ha. Concentrates were fed separately at 9.5–11.5 kg/day per cow (dry matter basis) from 1 to 13 weeks postparturition. Herbage intake was estimated using chromium oxide as an indigestible marker. The mean contents of crude protein, total digestible nutrients and neutral detergent fiber of pasture during the 3‐year study period were 22.3%, 71.8% and 51.7%, and those of total diet were 18.9%, 77.3% and 40.3%, respectively. The mean herbage dry matter intake was 13.0 kg/day from 2 to 13 weeks postparturition during the study, total dry matter intake was 23.7 kg/day, the total digestible nutrients sufficiency rate was 105%, milk yield was 39.7 kg/day, and milk fat percentage was 3.30%. The decrease in bodyweight postparturition was slight. Urea nitrogen concentrations in serum were below 18.3 mg/dL. The mean days to first estrus and days open were 36 and 104 days, respectively. These results indicate that energy deficiency, decrease in bodyweight and fertility in early lactation barely occur when high producing dairy cows are fed enough grazing grass and suitable concentrates.  相似文献

The effect of level and source of nutrients in late gestation on food intake, milk yield, milk composition and fertility in the subsequent lactation were evaluated in a randomized block design experiment involving 76 cows. Four experimental diets, based on grass silage, were offered to provide two levels of metabolizable energy (ME) intake (80 and 125 MJ/cow/day) either from 100:0 or 40:60 forage:concentrate (F:C) ratios for the last 28 days of gestation. Post-calving all cows were offered the same grass silage supplemented with 7 kg/day concentrates. For treatments 80 ME, 125 ME and 100:0 F:C, 40:60 F:C total dry matter (DM) intakes were 6.8, 10.5, 9.0 and 8.4 kg DM/day and ME intakes were 80, 126, 102 and 104 MJ/day, respectively, during the last 4 weeks of gestation. For weeks 1-16 of the subsequent lactation, treatment 125 ME increased milk fat content and yield but had no effect on food intake, milk protein content or onset of cyclicity. Treatment 125 ME increased condition score and live weight at calving. Altering the F:C ratio of the diets in late gestation had no effect on food intake, milk yield, milk composition or on the onset of cyclicity in the subsequent lactation. Cow parity and level of nutrient intake in late gestation provided the best fit relationships for the yields of fat and fat plus protein (R2 relationships=0.49 and 0.52, respectively) during weeks 1-16 of lactation. It is concluded that increasing nutrient intake in late gestation increased milk fat content and yield but had no effect on milk protein concentration. The improved milk fat content and yield observed in a previous study was due to increased nutrient intake rather than altering the F:C ratio. Furthermore there was no measurable benefit in food intake or animal performance in the subsequent lactation through feeding concentrates in late gestation.  相似文献

Breed, age and individual animals usually had greater effects on the average metabolite concentrations than did stocking rate.

Twelve crossbred sows were used in an energy balance study to estimate energetic efficiency of milk production from feed. Balances were made from 7 to 14 d and from 18 to 25 d of lactation. Two feeding levels were applied (high and low). The low level (L) was meant to supply energy slightly above maintenance, with energy needed for milk to be derived from body reserves. The high level (H) was meant to supply sufficient energy for maintenance and for milk production. The low-level animals received 2.5 to 2.6 kg of feed/d and the high level animals 4.8 to 6 kg/d. The loss of weight of sows during lactation depended more on feeding level than on stage of lactation. A high level of feeding to sows resulted in heavier piglets compared with the low feeding level (significant after 10 d). At 24 d of age piglets with the high-feeding-level sows weighed 7.5 kg and those with the low-level sows, 5.7 kg. At the high level, animals excreted 1,200 to 2,800 kcal more milk energy per day than the low-level animals. Energy for milk from feed was produced with an efficiency of 67 to 69% with a maintenance requirement of 112 to 125 kcal metabolizable energy (ME) X W-.75 X d-1. Efficiency of milk production from feed was calculated as 62% and the maintenance requirement was 68 kcal. In this calculation, milk was corrected toward zero energy balance. Another way of calculating this efficiency after correcting feed toward zero energy balance resulted in estimates of 68% for efficiency and of 88 kcal ME X W-.75 X d-1 for maintenance requirement. From these data it was derived that, for each piglet, the sow needed to receive .5 to .6 kg of extra feed (ME content 3,000 kcal/kg) per day to cover milk production. Level of metabolic rate for nursing piglets was estimated as 97 kcal ME X W-.75 X d-1 for maintenance and, in addition, .195 kcal/kcal extra of milk intake above maintenance.  相似文献

本试验旨在研究全混合日粮(TMR)饲喂泌乳奶牛群摄入养分偏离的原因分析及对生产性能的影响。选取30个高产牛群,每个牛群采样5 d。采取牛群TMR及剩料样品,进行养分分析和颗粒分级评定,计算各指标的变异系数。记录产奶量,取奶样测乳成分。多元线性回归分析养分、颗粒的变异系数与牛群生产性能的关系。结果表明:30个牛群饲喂的TMR产奶净能(NEL)和粗蛋白质(CP)、中性洗涤纤维(NDF)、酸性洗涤纤维(ADF)、微生物蛋白质(MCP)、瘤胃非降解蛋白质(RUP)、瘤胃能氮平衡(RENB)、小肠可消化粗蛋白质(DCPSI)、钙(Ca)含量分别为6.56 MJ/kg和16.22%、35.71%、21.38%、77.84 g/kg、92.15 g/kg、14.77 g/kg、104.04 g/kg、1.43%,其中高于配方目标的指标有NDF(1.94%)、Ca(0.57%)、RUP(5.03 g/kg)、RENB(6.95 g/kg),低于配方目标的指标有CP(-0.36%)、ADF(-1.54%)、NEL(-0.12 MJ/kg)、MCP(-7.71 g/kg)、DCPSI(-2.12 g/kg)(正值表示提高,负值表示降低)。观测期内,RUP[(16.26±7.10)%]、MCP[(22.78±13.38)%]、RENB[(64.29±34.29)%]3种养分的变异系数大于10%,其他养分的变异系数均小于10%。长、中、短、细4类颗粒含量的变异系数分别为(15.78±9.25)%、(9.12±7.86)%、(6.00±4.00)%、(11.15±9.62)%。回归分析表明,TM R养分和颗粒度变异影响产奶量和乳成分,NEL变异系数每升高1个百分点,产奶量下降3.662 kg/d;长颗粒变异系数每升高1个百分点,产奶量下降0.124 kg/d,乳脂率升高0.012%。结果提示,TMR饲喂泌乳奶牛摄入养分因投料不准确、加工质量不稳定、搅拌不均匀、挑食等与配方养分产生差异。TMR加工质量稳定性影响到产奶量和乳成分,其中NEL、DCPSI、RENB的变异影响产奶量,长颗粒变异影响产奶量和乳脂率。  相似文献

Feeding trials were performed with two groups of dairy cows receiving ammonized straw pellets supplemented with varying levels of concentrates as sole basal diet. The trials were carried out over periods of 546 days and 120 days. An annual milk production of 4217.9 kgs (calculated on the basis of 3.5% of milk fat) per cow was achieved in group I by feeding 3060.6 kgs of straw pellets and 2014.7 kgs of concentrates per animal. After subtracting all additives an amount of 2641.1 kgs of pure straw (= 52%) and of 2434.2 kgs of concentrated food (= 48%) remained so that the resulting amount of dry feed consumed per 100 kg of milk was 120.3 kg. A total of 6309.6 kgs of milk was produced per cow over a period of 546 days of trial. During this period the average weight gain per cow was 98.4 kgs. 1517.3 kgs of milk (calculated on the basis of 3.5% milk fat) per cow were produced in group II (56 cows) over a period of 105 days by feeding 892.5 kgs of straw pellets and 682.5 kgs of concentrate pellets. The concentrate pellets contained 50% of ammonized dried sugar beet chips but not extracted meals.  相似文献

Studies on the use of lucerne silage as a forage source for high-yielding dairy cows. It was the main objective of this study to investigate effects of lucerne silage inclusion in maize silage-based rations on dry matter intake, milk yield and metabolic parameters of high yielding dairy cows. Three total mixed rations (TMR) were used. They contained as the main forage source on a dry matter basis 41.5% maize silage and 12% grass silage (ration maize) or 18% maize silage and 29% of either grass silage (ration grass) or lucerne silage (ration lucerne). Organic matter digestibility, determined with wether sheep, was 77 and 65% for the grass and the lucerne silage, respectively. Each TMR was fed to 4 wether sheep to determine crude nutrient digestibilities. The content of net energy for lactation (NEL), as calculated from digestible crude nutrients, was (MJ/kg dry matter (DM)): 7.1 (maize), 7.2 (grass) and 6.8 (lucerne). Based on the results of a chemical fractionation of crude protein it was calculated that the content of utilisable crude protein (nXP) was not below 167 g/kg DM and that the N balance in the rumen was not negative for all 3 TMR. The TMR were fed for 169 days to at least 28 dairy cows per treatment which were in their first half of lactation. Feed intake, milk performance data and physiological indicators were measured for each individual cow. The DM intake was significantly higher in treatment lucerne (23.2 kg/d) than in treatments grass (21.2 kg/d) and maize (22.6 kg/d). Daily intakes of NEL and nXP were significantly lower in treatment grass than in the other two treatments. Milk yield was significantly higher in treatment maize (41.7 kg/d) than in treatments grass (37.3 kg/d) and lucerne (38.5 kg/d). This was associated with a significantly lower milk fat content in treatment maize (3.5%) in comparison with the other two treatments (3.9% each). Milk protein content was unaffected by treatment (3.4% on average). Similarly, the acetone content of milk was not significantly different between treatments. The beta-hydroxybutyrate content of the deproteinized blood was significantly higher in treatment lucerne at start of lactation, but this difference disappeared in subsequent parts of the experimental period. Measurements of back fat thickness indicated mobilisation and retention of energy by cows during the experimental period to be similar in all treatments. It is concluded that lucerne silage is a suitable forage source for high yielding dairy cows in spite of its low digestibility.  相似文献

Evidence supports the concept of the dry period being a critical component to lactation preparation rather than an insignificant rest period between lactations. Required nutrient amounts for the dry cow are the sum of maintenance, pregnancy, and reserve replenishment needs with additional requirements for growth during the first two pregnancies. Maintenance energy requirements can be dramatically increased by level of activity and adverse environmental conditions. A wide variety of feed ingredients can be successfully fed to dry cows as long as rations are appropriately formulated to meet energy, protein, mineral, and vitamin requirements. A early and close-up dry program best matches increasing pregnancy requirements and declining intake capacity with management capabilities. The early dry cow ration is formulated for high fiber/low energy density while the close-up ration contains higher energy density with less fiber. Both rations contain sufficient other nutrients based on determined intake. This two-group system provides maximal flexibility in managing for optimum body condition at calving. Environmental stresses and dramatic dietary changes should be minimized during the transition period from late gestation to lactation. A sound dry cow program results from integration of quality nutrition and cow management practices as described. A dry cow program that enacts these guidelines should result in reduced incidence of clinical mastitis, successfully complete pregnancy with a viable calf, maximize genetic potential for milk production, minimize incidence of health disorders, and allows cows to breed back within an economically optimum time interval. Overall, a sound dry cow program is a critical key to improved fresh cow performance.  相似文献

The physiological state of the animal will influence the amount of energy it can utilize and this, in turn, will tend to affect its demand for food. Particularly when the energy concentration of the ration is not high, any effect of the physiological state on abdominal capacity will affect intake, e.g. young, fat or pregnant animals will have a reduced capacity compared to older, thin or non-pregnant animals, respectively. In general, intake of energy will increase with increasing concentration of digestible energy in the ration, but it becomes constant once the animal is able to meet its total requirement. When the energy concentration of the ration is not limiting, an increased output of energy will, in general, be matched by an increased intake. The response may not be immediate however, so that after parturition for example, peak food intake frequently occurs after peak milk yield. Correlations between intake and milk yield are generally low, whereas there is usually a marked relationship between body weight and intake in the lactating cow. Simple equations linking intake to body weight and milk yield are usually quite accurate in the general situation, but rarely of value to predict intake of an individual. More complex equations, though more accurate, are difficult to apply in the practical situation.The relationship between lactation and food intake is examined in some detail. It is concluded that efficiency of utilization of food energy for milk production could be improved by minimizing cyclic variations in liveweight of the cow during lactation. To permit this, methods are currently being examined for manipulating diet composition to enable the cow to consume enough food in early lactation to meet the requirement for milk production. If these methods are successful, it will be possible to feed the cow for constant liveweight by feeding to appetite at all times and altering the composition of the diet to match the energy demand of the cow. Allowance should be made for growth and pregnancy, but fatness should be avoided.  相似文献

Five crossbred beef steers (515 kg) were used in a Latin square experiment and 36 lactating Jersey cows (12 primiparous, 310 kg; 24 multiparous, 365 kg) were used in a completely randomized design study to determine effects on characteristics of digestion and lactational performance of daily alternation of the dietary level of natural protein (NP). In Experiment 1, steers were fed diets of 50% bermudagrass hay and 50% concentrate. Concentrate was approximately 18% crude protein (CP), formulated to be 60, 80 or 100% NP (varying proportions of soybean meal, urea and ground corn), and was fed at 1.5% body weight (dry matter basis). These concentrates were fed daily or ones with 60 and 100% NP were fed on alternate days. Alternate day feeding did not markedly affect characteristics of digestion, including ruminal escape of feed protein, and NP level of concentrate fed continuously had no effects either. In Experiment 2, cows were subjected to treatments similar to those in Experiment 1, and performance on d 20-40 of lactation was measured. Concentrate was given at 1 kg (as fed)/2.15 kg milk produced, yielding a dietary concentrate level of approximately 40% (dry matter basis). Alternate feeding depressed (P less than 0.05) overall milk fat percentage. Alternate feeding increased production of milk and protein and body weight of primiparous cows but caused little change with multiparous cows. Besides increasing the dietary level of concentrate, perhaps alternate feeding regimes have utility to lower milk fat level without impairing milk production. Level of NP in concentrate fed continuously did not affect performance by multiparous cows though primiparous cow performance was generally enhanced, possibly because CP intake was adequate for multiparous cows but marginal for primiparous cows. However, overall, efficiency of production of solids-corrected milk rose slightly with increasing NP.  相似文献

The main feeding factors leading to optimum milk production in dairy goats are studied in this paper. Because of its high milk yield, the goat consumes large quantities of dry matter. Accordingly, the intake of energy seems to be the most important dietary factor influencing milk production.The amount of concentrates offered must be determined according to the type and the quality of forages. For obtaining maximum production the energy density of the diet must approximate 0.80 F.U./kg D.M.The annual feeding programme of the dairy goat must be adapted to its behaviour and must take into account its physiological status. Before and after parturition, feeding of good quality forages favourably affects the onset of lactation. The supply of concentrates before parturition should not exceed about 8 g D.M./kg L.W. After parturition, the increase in the concentrate intake of the goats should not be too rapid. In the middle of lactation and especially at the end of lactation, maintenance of milk production at a high level requires a slightly higher supply of concentrates than that necessary to meet the requirements for energy.  相似文献

The greater cane rat, Thryonomys swinderianus, utilizes high fibrous plant material and is an important meat source in West Africa. An insight in its digestive physiology will enhance our understanding of its feeding habits. Digestibility coefficients of the food were determined during two seasons before the animals were euthanased. The distribution and concentrations of nutrients and energy in different parts of the gastrointestinal tract were determined at the time of day when animals practised coprophagy. Trial 1 diet in the wet season consisted of 36% neutral detergent fibre (NDF), 11% protein and 49% dry matter, while the Trial 2 diet in the dry season consisted of 53% NDF, 8–9% protein and 89% dry matter. The Trial 2 animals on the poor diet increased their daily nutrient intake, possibly increased the volume of digesta and practised frequently cophrophagy, so that faecal production was reduced and digestibility coefficients were relatively high. Coprophagy increased both protein and energy intake as soft pellets in the distal colon had higher protein and energy content than the hard faeces. Energy, protein and acid-detergent fibre were retained in the caecum of Trial 1 females and the caecum and proximal colon of the Trial 2 animals 16 hours after feeding, illustrating the importance of these two regions in the fermentation process. Water was absorbed in the distal colon as dry matter content of digesta increased 53%, 4% and 56% from the proximal colon to the distal colon. Animals produced hard faeces with only 16% and 5% lower moisture content in the dry season, compared to that produced in the wet season, as water was not a limiting factor during the trials. It was concluded that an increase in daily food intake, an increase in coprophagy and the presence of a colonic separation mechanism (that retains small particles) enable the greater cane rat to utilize high fibrous plant material. These digestive strategies seem to be comparable to those observed in other hystricomorph rodents.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to measure the effect of feeding two total mixed rations (TMRs), differing in their roughage content and in vitro dry matter digestibility, on the respiratory rate, body temperature, eating behavior and energy balance of lactating cows. The partitioning of metabolizable energy intake (MEI) between heat production (HP) and retained energy (RE) of cows held under heat load conditions was measured. Forty-two lactating cows were divided into two similar sub-groups, each of 21 animals, and were fed either a control (CON) ration containing 18% roughage neutral detergent fiber (NDF) or an experimental (EXP) TMR that contained 12% roughage NDF and used soy hulls as partial wheat silage replacer. The in vitro DM digestibility of the CON and EXP TMRs was 75.3 and 78.6%, respectively (P < 0.05). The EXP diet reduced rectal temperature and respiratory rate of the cows while increasing their number of meals per day by 32.7% as compared with the CON fed cows, and these meals were shorter in duration and were eaten faster. The EXP diet increased total DM intake from 19.6 to 21.5 kg/cow/d, milk yield from 32.3 to 34.6 kg, and yield of energy corrected milk from 30.9 to 32.2 kg, as compared with the CON group. Cows fed the EXP TMR had increased RE in milk and body tissue, as compared with the CON group, but the diets had no effect on the measured HP that was maintained similar (121 vs. 127 MJ/cow/d) in the two groups. The measured MEI (MEI = RE + HP) and the efficiency of MEI utilization for RE production, were similar in the two dietary groups.  相似文献

试验使用饲用甜高粱Sorghum dochna辽甜1号、辽甜3号2个品种,在遵化试区试验点分2步同时进行,一是进行适应性及生物学产量测定,二是生物学产量测定以及奶牛饲喂效果对比试验,以期筛选出适合冀东地区奶牛优质牧草。结果表明,甜高粱在冀东地区种植生长性能良好,适宜种植密度6.00万~6.75万株/hm2,辽甜1号、3号干草产量分别可达到29.98~33.70和31.51~35.45 t/hm2。用不同青粗饲料牧草组合和相同精料补充料,等量干物质采食量饲喂奶牛试验,日产标准乳分别高于以玉米Zea mays秸青贮为主的对照组2.64和2.49 kg,乳中干物质、乳蛋白、乳脂肪含量无差异。辽甜1号、3号生物学产量高,适合奶牛青饲和制作青贮,是奶牛很好的青粗饲料。  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that purebred Boran (Bos indicus) cows and crossbreds of Boran and Holstein respond differently to long-term changes of feeding level in nutrient partitioning to milk and body fat stores. A total of 27 cows of these two genotypes were subjected either to a low or a high feeding level from their first oestrus as heifers until birth of their third calf. Half of the cows of each genotype were then switched to the other feeding level during the third reproduction cycle. If at all, Boran cows responded to a change in the feeding level almost exclusively by a corresponding change in body weight but not milk yield. Crossbred cows kept continuously on the low feeding level had a lower milk yield than those continuously fed the high level, but lost similar amounts of body weight. In crossbred cows, changing the feeding level from high to low was accompanied by a mobilization of body reserves, whereas a change from low to high level resulted mostly in an increase in milk yield. Certain other genotype differences in metabolic response were obvious from differences in body composition and from the metabolic profile either reflected in blood (particularly insulin-like growth factor I) or in adipose tissue (lipoprotein lipase). Reproductive performance differed between genotypes, with shorter lactations associated with earlier occurrences of the first oestrus in the Boran cows. Generally, feeding history appeared to have at least as much influence on energy partitioning as the actual feeding level. In conclusion, purebred Boran cows seem to react to long-term food fluctuations mainly by mobilizing and restoring body fat reserves, whereas cows crossbred with Holstein tend to spend extra energy preferentially for milk production.  相似文献

Athletic performance may be initially enabled but then become limited by changes in body fluids. This subject is reviewed in three parts: physiological responses, replacement strategies, and the influences of nutrition and feeding management. Emphasis on losses in sweat during strenuous exercise have focused attention on replacement of water and electrolytes, but the economies of water and energy are intertwined, so our interest should expand to the whole diet and its management. Feed balanced for strenuous exercise must maximize the conversion of its potential chemical energy into kinetic mechanical energy, and minimize waste such as feces, acid and heat. Research suggests five efficiency promoting tentative features: strong cation-anion balance (200-300 mEq/kg dry matter); modest protein (80-100 g/kg); ample vegetable oil (100-120 g/kg); specified fibers (difficult to quantify simply); and a stress profile of other essential nutrients (tentatively 1.5- to 3-times higher than currently recommended on a digestible energy basis). In effect, such an ergogenic feed replaces starch and sugar with fat and fiber. A high fiber intake increases water intake, gut water and net water absorption during strenuous exercise. It also increases heat production and water needed for evaporation, bowel ballast and fecal water output. Feeding management before an event involves the timing, size and nature of meals and watering. It should be adapted to the individual horse during training. Our laboratory has developed two complete and balanced ergogenic feeds, one for the stall-kept athlete, the other for the horse on pasture. Use of high-efficiency feeds like these should enhance the homeostasis of body fluids during strenuous exercise.  相似文献

The effects of energy level on milk yield, milk composition and growth of the piglets were studied in 20 gilts (10 replicates of two littermates) and their litters during a 21-d lactation. The metabolizable energy (ME) levels were 14.2 and 10.4 Mcal ME X d-1 X sow-1 in the high energy (HE) and low energy (LE) groups, respectively. The daily supply of other nutrients in the diets was identical in both treatments. Milk yield measured every 4 d was lower in the LE group. But fat (8.0 vs 6.9%), energy (1.27 vs 1.14 Mcal/g) and nitrogen (.78 vs .74%) contents of milk were significantly higher in the LE gilts compared with the HE gilts. The daily output of energy and nitrogen was therefore equivalent in both treatments (respectively, 8.28 Mcal and 51.8 g/d), but the fat output was higher in the energy-restricted gilts (532 vs 490 g/d). Growth rate of the litter was similar in both treatments, but piglets suckling LE dams had higher dry matter, fat and energy contents in their body at weaning. Piglets retained 89, 54 and 55% of nitrogen, fat and energy, respectively, of milk between birth and weaning. The results suggest that the ability of sows to mobilize body lipids in order to maintain the output of energy in milk is reduced as body fat reserves are depleted.  相似文献
