Seed of BC1 progeny of an interspecific cross between a slow germinating Lycopersicon esculentum breeding line(NC84173; maternal and recurrent parent) and a fast germinating L.pimpinellifolium accession (LA722) were evaluated for germination under cold stress, salt stress and drought stress, and in each treatment the most rapidly germinating seeds (first 2%) were selected. Selected individuals were grown to maturity and self-pollinated to produce BC1S1 progeny families. The selected BC1S1 progeny from each experiment were evaluated for germination rate in each of a non stress (control),cold-, salt- and drought-stress treatment, and their performances were compared with those of a non selected BC1S1population in the same treatments. Results indicated that selection for rapid seed germination in each of the three stress treatments was effective and significantly improved progeny germination rate under all three stress conditions. The results support the suggestion that same genes might control the rate of seed germination under cold, salt and drought stress. Furthermore, selection in each of the three stress treatments resulted in improved progeny seed germination rate under nonstress conditions, suggesting that genetic mechanisms that facilitate rapid seed germination under stress conditions might also contribute to rapid germination under nonstress conditions. In practice, therefore, selection for rapid seed germination under a single stress environment may result in progeny with improved seed germination under a wide range of environmental conditions. Furthermore, to improve germination rate under nonstress conditions, it might be more efficient to make selections under stress conditions. Resistance at the TM-2 locus in the tomato to tomato mosaic virus   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
T. J. Hall 《Euphytica》1980,29(1):189-197
Summary There are three known tomato mosaic virus (TMV) resistance factors, Tm-1, Tm-2 and Tm-2 2, in the tomato. Tm-2 2 is currently the most widely utilised in glasshouse cultivars. Both Tm-2 and Tm-22 can induce systemic necroses in response to virus infection. These are considered to be hypersensitive resistance reactions in view of the low virus concentrations in affected plants and because sub-inoculation usually fails to infect all plants possessing the same resistance gene. The literature relating to TMV resistance at the Tm-2 locus in the tomato is reviewed.Virulent strains may readily establish when Tm-1 or Tm-2 are used, but Tm-2 2 confers more effective resistance. The possible development of aggressive isolates capable of affecting Tm-2 2/Tm-22 plants is discussed. The establishment of virus types which cause systemic necrosis at normal growing temperatures is considered more likely than widespread infection from fully virulent strain 22 mutants. However, the growing of crops isolated from the TMV reservoirs in the soil considerably reduces the likelihood of even this occurring.  相似文献

Summary Genetics of parthenocarpy in line RP 75/59 was tested under natural low temperature conditions, under which only seedless fruits were produced. Results were consistent with the hypothesis that three recessive genes with additive effects are responsible for parthenocarpy. Linkage studies, using 40 morphological marker genes located among all tomato chromosomes except chromosome seven, revealed linkage of one gene to diageotropica (dgt) located on chromosome 1 L site 152, and a second gene to yellow verescent (yv) located on chromosome 6 L site 34. Location of the third gene involved in parthenocarpy could not be determined. To calculate the power of the linkage tests, a simulation was carried out for three genetic models; the results are presented graphically in two figures.  相似文献

Summary In comparisons made under typical summer conditions in the field at Davis, California, the foliage of the anthocyanin-deficient mutant af proved to be much more susceptible to attack by Epitrix hirtipennis (Melsheimer) than that of the isogenic normal line, normal cultivars, or any other tested mutant. Since a relatively uniform level of damage was observed in leaves of various ages that contacted the soil, the interaction is probably of a preference rather than antibiotic nature. A comparison with nine other anthocyaninless mutants proved that anthocyanin deficiency is not responsible for susceptibility. The severe reduction of glandular hairs and consequent lack of foliage aroma—hitherto unsuspected pleiotropic effects of af—probably account for the high susceptibility of this mutant. The evolutionary significance of the distinct foliage aromas characteristic of each tomato species is discussed.  相似文献

Summary A RAPD marker, linked to the Tm-2 agene engendering TMV resistance in tomatoes, was identified. The validity of the RAPD marker was corroborated by screening several tomato varieties, and correctly identifying those which carried Tm-2 a, as well as by F2 segregation analysis. All tested resistant varieties descending from a common Lycopersicon peruvianum/esculentum ancestor, LA1791, exhibited this marker.  相似文献

Summary When screening populations segregating for resistance to Corynebacterium michiganense a rapid and reliable inoculation technique is needed. From the several techniques tested, inoculation of the petiole was found to give better differentiation of resistant and susceptible plants than did inoculation of the root or leaf. When petiole-inoculation was compared with stem-inoculation the latter showed the lowest environmental variation and is suggested for use in genetic studies. Stem-inoculation involved clipping the stems of 4 week old seedlings 1 cm above the cotyledonary leaves with scissors which had been dipped in inoculum.Petiole inoculation and, to a lesser degree, stem inoculation failed to produce uniform infection, resulting in variation in the expression of the disease. The scoring was therefore based on the presence, and not the degree, of wilting and stunting, or the size of the cankers. Plants free of all these symptoms were rated resistant. The coefficient of variation for vascular discoloration on individual plants was calculated to be 50%, which in part may be explained by the histopathology of the host. The virulent isolates cm 21 caused death of seedlings resistant to isolate H. However, cultivars resistant to isolate H in the seedling stage did not decrease in fruit weight as compared to susceptible cultivars when inoculated with isolate cm 21 at anthesis.Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station Journal No. 7424.  相似文献

Inheritance of black leaf mold resistance in tomato   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Inheritance of black leaf mold (BLM) (caused by Pseudocercospora fuligena) resistance was studied in four crosses involving two resistant Lycopersicon accessions (PI134417, L. hirsutum and PI254655, L. esculentum) and four susceptible Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center tomato lines (CLN657BC1F2-267-0-3-12-7, CL143-0-10-3-0-1-10, CLN698BC1F2-358-4-13 and CL5915-93D4-1-0-3). For each cross, six generations, i.e. P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1F1 and BC1F2 were evaluated following inoculations with isolate Pf-2 of P. fuligena. Chi-square analyses of the data based on the ratio of resistant to susceptible plants in the F2 in three of four crosses gave a good fit to a segregation ratio of 1 R : 15 S, and BC1F2 data in three of four crosses gave an acceptable fit to the segregation ratio of 1 R : 63 S. The results indicate that resistance to BLM may be conditioned by two recessive genes acting epistatically in both PI134417 and PI254655.  相似文献

Summary A reduction in germination of tomato seed due to the lateral suppressor mutant (ls) is demonstrated. This is shown to be an effect of the maternal genotype rather than of the embryo. Poor germination is not determined until comparatively late in seed development and the effect can be avoided by embryo culture. Cuticular necrosis of the mutant seed appears to be associated with poor germination but the former symptom may be suppressed independently of the latter.  相似文献

The Lycopersicon hirsutum var. hirsutum accession PI 127826 is recognized as a good source of resistance to arthropod pests due to the action of the allelochemical zimgiberene, a sesquiterpene present in its glandular trichomes. Five genotypes were selected from the F2 generation of the interspecific cross Lycopersicon esculentum ‘TOM-556’ × Lycopersicon hirsutum var. hirsutum ‘PI 127826’, based on their low levels (BPX-368-clone#56) or high levels(BPX-368-clone#92, BPX-368-clone#105,BPX-368-clone#179, BPX-368-clone#250) of zingiberene. The five F2 genotypes were tested for resistance to the South American tomato pinworm Tuta absolutaalong with accession L. esculentum ‘TOM-556’ (pinworm susceptible), and the accessions L. hirsutum var. hirsutum ‘PI 127826’ and L. pennellii ‘LA716’ (resistant). The F2 clones selected for high foliar zingiberene levels showed lower scores for leaflet lesion type(LLT), percent leaflets attacked (PLA) and overall plant damage (OPD) than the low zingiberene genotypes. The results indicated that zingiberene mediates resistance to the South American pinworm, based on feeding and on ovipositing deterrence, in populations derived from the interspecific cross between Lycopersicon. esculentum and Lycopersicon hirsutum var. hirsutum. Indirect selection for high foliar zingiberene content is suggested as an efficient technique for breeding tomatoes for resistance to the South American tomato pinworm. Summary Density of certain types of trichomes were characterized on leaflets of Lycopersicon hirsutum, L. esculentum and their hybrids. Trichome density covaried with leaflet development, and depending on the species and type of trichome, density also covaried with leaflet surface. Type IV trichomes were not observed on leaflets of L. esculentum and Type V trichomes were not observed on leaflets of L. hirsutum. Type IV and V trichomes were present on F1 hybrids and densities of these two types of trichomes segregated in the F2 population. When corrected for differences of leaflet size between L. hirsutum and L. esculentum, densities of Type VI trichomes were more similar between species than uncorrected densities. There was little difference in Type VI density among F2 individuals. The appearance, lipid and phenol staining properties, and native fluorescence of the multicellular tip of the Type VI trichome differed between L. hirsutum and L. esculentum. F1 hybrids were intermediate for these characters and these characters segregated in the F2 generation. The investigation reported in the paper (84-10-94) is in connection with a project of the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station and is published with the approval of the Director. Growth and photosynthetic performance were analyzed in alloplasmic tomato at a high- (25/17 °C; HTR) and low-temperature regime (12/6 °C; LTR) in order to establish the role of cytoplasmic variation on low-temperature tolerance of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Four alloplasmic tomato lines, containing the nuclear genome of tomato and the plastome of L. hirsutum LA 1777 Humb. & Bonpl., an accession collected at high-altitude in Peru, were reciprocally crossed with 11 tomato entries with a high inbreeding level and a wide genetic variation, resulting in a set of 44 reciprocal crosses. Irrespective of growth temperature, alloplasmic families with alien chloroplasts of L. hirsutum (h) were on average characterized by a high shoot biomass, a large leaf area, and a low specific leaf area in comparison with their euplasmic counterparts. These results do not directly point to an advantageous effect of h-chloroplasts on biomass accumulation at low temperature but rather towards a small general beneficial effect on growth and/or distribution of assimilates. Significant chloroplast-related differences in photosynthetic performance, however, were not detected at both temperature regimes, indicating that h-chloroplasts can properly function in a variable nuclear background of L. esculentum. It is concluded that chloroplast substitution is not an effective method for breeding tomato plants with improved low-temperature tolerance. The genetic nature of early blight resistance in tomato was studied in three crosses at seedling and adult plant stages. A six generation mean analysis of the cross Arka Saurabh (susceptible) × IHR1939 (resistance) and its reciprocal cross revealed that the resistance to early blight was conferred by recessive polygenes at both seedling and adult plant stages. This polygenic early blight resistance revealed the importance of additive and additive × additive gene effects at seedling stage and higher magnitude of dominance and dominance× dominance gene effects at adult plant stage. Evaluation of parents, F1, F2 and backcross generations of IHR1816 (resistance) × IHR1939 (resistance) revealed that the early blight resistance genes in IHR1816 (Lycopersicon esculentum NCEBR-1) and IHR1939 (Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium L4394) are independent. Summary A method is described for selecting resistant transformed tomato genotypes in vitro at the stage of immature embryos. The utilization of HLH nutrient medium with the selective agent kanamycin is proposed. Normal development of seedlings from immature embryos, which do not form callus, is a good and true indicator for isolation of resistant genotypes. The immature embryos do not germinate and develop on MS selective medium.  相似文献

Summary Isozyme analyses have been used for the definitive identification of many plant cultivars, but not for cultivated tomatoes. Six isozyme systems, namely alcohol dehydrogenase, acid phosphatase, phosphoglucomutase, esterase, phosphoglucoisomerase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase of tomato seed extracts were resolved by isoelectric focusing on polyacrylamide gels with a narrow pH gradient. Nine alcohol dehydrogenase phenotypes were distinguished which, with three acid phosphatase phenotypes, identified twelve of the seventeen cultivars. Fewer differences were found for the other isozymes. Since this method could differentiate between breeding parents and their progeny it is concluded that further investigations are warranted.Abbreviations APS acid phosphatase - ADH alcohol dehydrogenase - EST esterase - IEF isoelectric focusing - PGI phosphoglucoisomerase - PGM phosphoglucomutase - 6-PGDH 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase - RFLP restriction fragment length polymorphism - VOPRI Vegetable and Ornamental Plant Research Institute  相似文献

Summary In vitro pollen germination at 10°C, 14°C and 22°C of four groups of two pure line tomato varieties was compared with their plant growth at 19°C D/10°C N under controlled environmental conditions. Generally, pollen germination was slow at 10°C but after 6 h the percentage of germination was similar to that at 22°C. Maximum germination was obtained at 14°C already after 4 h. The longest pollen tubes occurred at 22°C. The two varieties within each group differed significantly from each other for percentage of pollen germination. For one group, this difference was greater at 10°C than at 22°C. The varieties in two groups also differed significantly for pollen tube growth. These differences in pollen tube growth rate were greater at 22°C than at 10°C. There was no clear relationship between pollen germination, pollen tube growth and plant growth in any of the four pairs of varieties. The results are discussed with regard to the possibility of pollen selection at low temperature in order to improve the efficiency of breeding for growth at low temperature.  相似文献

Summary Tomato accessions (Lycopersicon sp.), along with commercial cultivars and breeding lines were grown in a field infested with the brown root rot (BRR) organism, Pyrenochaeta lycopersici and evaluated for resistance. Three L. esculentum Mill. accessions, P.I. 260397, P.I. 262906 and P.I. 203231, were resistant and were used as male parents in crosses designed to transfer resistance to tomatoes of fresh market type. Through analysis of parental generations and F1 and F2 progenies from three crosses the heritability of resistance in the broad sense was estimated to range from 25 to 43 percent. The minimum number of genes influencing resistance was estimated to be from 4 to 8.Florida Agricultural Experiment Stations Journal Series Paper no. 317.  相似文献

Summary Twelve inbred lines of tomato and their 132 hybrids (reciprocals were considered separately) were studied in four environments: glasshouse and open air, with and without plastic cover. Nine characters were recorded and the phenotypic and environmental correlations between them were obtained within environments and for the complete set of data. Characters showing the highest phenotypic correlation with yield were fruits per cluster and earliness in harvesting, but neither of them is useful for indirect selection for yield. To the contrary, leaves between racemes can be used when selecting for fruits per cluster. Environmental correlations were generally low, excepting total yield in fruits per cluster.Broad sense heritabilities were obtained, which were rather high for fruit weight, locules per fruit, fruits per cluster and leaves between clusters. Some cases in which phenotypic correlations were rather constant for the different environments in spite of the great differences recorded for the genotypic correlation coefficients, are explained because of the great weight (i.e., considering heritabilities) of environmental correlations on phenotypic correlations.  相似文献

Summary Fruit rot disease caused by Phytophthora parasiticaDast. is a limiting factor in tomato production in Himachal Pradesh. 30 to 60 per cent fruits are damaged by this disease. Crosses were made between EC 54725 (Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium), a small tyuited type, resistant to fruit rot and four highly susceptible tomato commercial cultivars (Gola, Sioux, S12, and Lalmani). Studies of F1's, F2's and back crosses indicated that EC 54725 carries a dominant gene imparting resistance to fruit rot.  相似文献

Summary Plants of the salt-sensitiveL. esculentum, the halophytic wild speciesL. pennellii, their F1 hybrids and the interspecific F2 generation were grown in Hoagland's liquid culture containing 100 mM NaCl and 6 mM K+. Analysis of the Na+, Cl- and K+ ions contents of the leaves showed, as observed also in previous studies, that the cultivated parent accumlated more K+ and less Na+ than the wild parent. A total of 117 F2 plants were assayed for 15 electrophoretically detectable isozyme markers which map to nine of the twelve tomato chromosomes. Four loci, all with a similar quantitative effect on Na+ and Cl- uptake, were identified by virtue of their linkage to isozyme markers. Two other loci were found to affect K+ uptake. This study demonstrates the potential value of using genetic markers in order to gain a better understanding of the genetic basis of quantitative traits associated with the response of plants to salinity stress.  相似文献
