Objective— To characterize biologic behavior, clinical outcome, and effect of histologic grade on prognosis for dogs with appendicular chondrosarcoma treated by amputation alone. Study Design— Case series. Animals— Dogs (n=25) with appendicular chondrosarcoma. Methods— Medical records were searched to identify dogs with appendicular chondrosarcoma treated by limb amputation alone. Information recorded included signalment, anatomic location, radiographic appearance, and development of metastasis. Histopathologic diagnosis was confirmed and graded (1, 2, or 3). Survival curves were generated by the Kaplan–Meier method and the association between covariates (gender, age, weight, and tumor grade) and survival were evaluated using the univariate proportional hazards model. Results— Histopathology slides were available for 25 dogs. Rates of pulmonary metastasis were as follows: grade 1–0%, grade 2–31%, and grade 3–50%. Overall median survival time (MST) was 979 days. Age, weight, and sex were not significantly associated with survival (P=.16; .33; and .31, respectively). Survival was significantly associated with tumor grade (P=.008), with dogs with tumor grade of 1, 2, and 3 having MSTs of 6, 2.7, and 0.9 years, respectively. Conclusion— Canine appendicular chondrosarcoma can be treated effectively with amputation alone. Low to intermediate grade chondrosarcoma has a good prognosis, whereas high‐grade tumors appear to behave aggressively. Clinical Relevance— The overall prognosis for appendicular chondrosarcoma is better than that of appendicular osteosarcoma treated by amputation alone or in combination with chemotherapy.  相似文献

Background

The most common haemostatic abnormality in dogs with cancer is hypercoagulability. A transient hypercoagulability has been documented in people with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that resolves within weeks following hepatic tumour resection.

Objective

The objective was to compare the haemostatic status of dogs with liver tumours and healthy control dogs, by comparing coagulation and thromboelastography (TEG) measurements at three time points.

Methods

Liver tumour and healthy control dogs receiving surgery for liver lobectomy and ovariohysterectomy, respectively, were prospectively enrolled. All dogs had blood collected at three time points: pre-operative, 24 h post-operative and ~2 weeks post-operative. Haematological and haemostatic values were compared across time points in each group using repeated measures ANOVA tests.

Results

Ten and eight dogs were enrolled for the liver and control groups, respectively. Platelet count was significantly higher in the liver group than the control group at all time points, but within the normal range (pre-operative: 438.7 vs. 300.9 × 109/L, p = .0078; 24 h post-operative: 416.2 vs. 283.9 × 109/L, p = .0123; 10–14 days post-operative: 524.6 vs. 317.3 × 109/L, p = .0072). The measure of the overall coagulant state (G-value) was significantly increased for the liver group compared to the control group at all time points (pre-operative: 15.6 vs. 8.6 d/sc, p = .0003; 24 h post-operative: 18.3 vs. 11.2 d/sc, p = .039; 10–14 days post-operative: 15.1 vs. 9.6 d/sc, p = .015).

Conclusion

The liver group was hypercoagulable based on elevated G-values at all time points compared to the control group. This hypercoagulability was attributed to the effect of hepatic tumours alone, and not secondary to surgery and anaesthesia.  相似文献

Primary abdominal visceral soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) are rare tumours in dogs with little information available on outcomes. The goal of this retrospective, multi‐institutional study was to describe the common tumour types, location and prognostic factors associated with primary abdominal visceral STSs. Medical records were searched for dogs with primary abdominal visceral STSs at six institutions and were retrospectively reviewed. Tumours were graded using the previously described grading scheme for STSs of the skin and subcutis when information in the histopathology report contained adequate details. Forty‐two dogs were included in the study. Five dogs had grade I tumours, 11 had grade II and 15 had grade III tumours. The most common tumour type was leiomyosarcoma (38.1%). The most common tumour locations were the spleen (47.6%) and small intestine (23.8%). The local recurrence rate was low (4.7%). Metastasis was present at the time of surgery in 23.8%, and the overall metastatic rate was 40.4%. Mitotic index of ≥9 was associated with significantly shorter survival time (MST 269 days) compared with a mitotic index of <9 (MST not reached). The MST for grade I STSs was not reached, was 589 days for grade II and 158 days for grade III. Dogs with grade III tumours were more likely to develop metastatic disease. Neither location of the primary tumour nor the histologic subtype was associated with survival time. Histologic grading of abdominal visceral STSs using the previously described scheme is prognostic and should be provided on histopathology reports.  相似文献

A fractured right supraglenoid tubercle in a 15-month-old Thoroughbred gelding was repaired by partial biceps brachii tenotomy, interfragmentary compression, and tension band wiring. The horse is currently being ridden daily and has remained sound for 4 years.  相似文献

One to five weeks after cataract removal, retinal detachments due to retinal breaks (rhegmatogenous detachments) were detected in 4 dogs. Surgical repair of the detachments, using a scleral buckling procedure, was successful in 3 of the 4 dogs.  相似文献

An eight-year-old male Australian cattle dog cross was presented with complete urethral obstruction secondary to fracture of the os penis which had occurred two years earlier. Obstruction was associated with callus and fibrous tissue proliferation compressing the urethra at the fracture site. The problem was satisfactorily resolved by removing excess bone and fibrous tissue and stabilising the fracture with a stainless steel finger plate.  相似文献

The surgical techniques employed in the repair of femoral neck fractures in two dogs and a Charolais calf are described. All the fractures were extracapsular; one of the dogs also had a fractured femoral diaphysis. For both dogs, exposure of the femoral neck was made from a dorsal approach after removal of the greater trochanter, while for the calf, a gluteal transection technique was used. All the fractures were successfully fixed using cortical screws, and in the case of the femoral diaphysis, a vitallium plate was used. All the animals were walking with minimal lameness eight weeks after surgery.  相似文献

Sea turtles are considered to be endangered species. A depressed fracture of a 35 kg green sea turtle was treated surgically. Isoflurane was used for induction and maintenance of anesthesia. Slow induction of and slow recovery from anesthesia was remarkable. After the operation, there was an improvement of general status, but head tilt and weakness of the left limbs persisted. As the turtle did not eat, force feeding using stomach tube was performed. The turtle died at about 6 months after the surgery.  相似文献

Surgical endodontic therapy (apical surgery) is a treatment alternative aimed at removing periapical inflammatory tissue followed by apical resection and retro-filling of the root canal. These procedures are performed through a trans-osseous approach. Terminology pertinent to this article include: apical (periapical) curettage--a surgical procedure to remove diseased tissue from the alveolar bone in the apical region of a pulpless tooth; apical cyst--a cyst in bone at the apex of a pulpless tooth. It is believed that such cysts arise after the death of the pulp from noxious physical, chemical, or bacterial stimulation of epithelial rests of Malassez; apicoectomy (apical resection) amputation of the apical portion of the root and removal of soft tissue in the bone; epithelial rests of Malassez--cords, strands, or clusters of ectodermal cells in the periodontal ligament (or sometimes alveolar bone) derived from remnants of Hertwigs epithelial root sheath. These cells frequently begin proliferating when inflammation occurs in the periodontal ligament and are believed to be responsible for the genesis of the epithelial lining of apical cysts.  相似文献

Feline large granular lymphocyte (LGL) lymphoma is an uncommon subtype of lymphoma characterized by a grave prognosis and scarce response to chemotherapy. There are limited reports on clinico‐pathological and prognostic factors. One‐hundred and 9 cats with newly diagnosed LGL lymphoma that underwent initial staging (including hematology, serum biochemistry, thoracic radiographs and abdominal ultrasound), and followed‐up were retrospectively evaluated. LGL lymphoma was localized within the gastrointestinal tract with or without extra‐intestinal involvement in 91.7% of the cases, and at extra‐gastrointestinal sites in 8.3%. Symptoms were frequent. Anemia (31.2%) and neutrophilia (26.6%) were commonly observed, and 14 (12.8%) cats had neoplastic circulating cells. Frequent biochemistry abnormalities included elevated ALT (39.4%) and hypoalbuminemia (28.4%). Twenty (54.1%) of 37 cats had elevated serum LDH. Treatment varied among cats, and included surgery (11%), chemotherapy (23%), corticosteroids (38.5%) and no treatment (27.5%). Median time to progression (MTTP) was 5 days, and median survival time (MST) 21 days. MST was significantly shorter in the case of substage b, circulating neoplastic cells, lack of chemotherapy administration, and lack of treatment response. A small subset of cats (7.3%) survived more than 6 months, suggesting that a more favorable clinical course can be found among LGL lymphoma patients.  相似文献
