The purpose of this study was to report the clinical, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and histological data derived from a study of 34 cats with noninflammatory central nervous system (CNS) disease, and to report the activities of the enzymes lactate-dehydrogenase (LDH), aspartate transferase (AST), and creatine kinase (CK) in the CSF from 15 cats with a variety of CNS diseases. The cats were part of a study of 61 cats that were admitted to two university clinics because of signs of CNS disease. The most frequent noninflammatory diseases were neoplasia (n = 12) and ischemic encephalopathy (n = 4). The majority of cats with CNS neoplasia had a mild increase in CSF protein concentration (less than 1 g/L [100 mg/dL]), an increased percentage of neutrophils or lymphocytes, and a normal total white cell count. Cats with ischemic encephalopathy (IE) had a mild to moderate increase in CSF protein concentration (< or = 2 g/L [200 mg/dL]) and a mild increase in white cell count (< or = 10 cells/microL) with an increased percentage of lymphocytes. The enzymes LDH, AST, and CK in the CSF were not sensitive indicators of chronic CNS disease. The CSF differential cell count was frequently abnormal when the total white cell count was normal, and blood contamination in the CSF samples was a frequent problem that had to be considered in the interpretation of the results. The history, signalment, and clinical signs, when combined with the CSF findings, were valuable in the diagnosis of noninflammatory CNS disease.  相似文献

Bartonella species infection is associated with central nervous system (CNS) disease in some humans and cats but the diagnosis is difficult to confirm with blood or serum test results. In this retrospective study of 100 client-owned cats, serum and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) were assayed for Bartonella species IgG antibodies and CSF was assayed for Bartonella species DNA. Bartonella species IgG antibodies were detected in serum of 36 cats, Bartonella species C-values>1 (suggesting antibody production by the CNS) were detected in CSF of 11 cats, and B henselae DNA was amplified from the CSF of 10 cats. While the clinical significance of these findings cannot be assessed without a control group, the development of neurological signs in some cats inoculated with B henselae and the results of this study warrant prospective evaluation of the association of Bartonella species with feline CNS disease.  相似文献

Background: The term “surface epithelium” is used to describe cells, including meningeal, choroid plexus, ependymal, and endothelial cells, that are found in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and are difficult to distinguish cytologically. We hypothesized that the presence of surface epithelial cells in canine CSF was associated with specific diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). Objectives: In this retrospective study the frequency of surface epithelial cells in CSF from dogs with neurologic disease was investigated along with the potential association with age, specific type of CNS disease, and CSF total nucleated cell count (TNCC) and protein concentration. Methods: The frequency of surface epithelial cells in 359 canine CSF samples was analyzed for 5 disease groups: CNS neoplasia, CNS compression, CNS inflammation, idiopathic epilepsy, and miscellaneous diseases. Groups were also combined into those with and without expected meningeal involvement. Association of the presence of surface epithelial cells in CSF with age, disease type, and CSF TNCC and protein concentration was investigated. Results: Surface epithelial cells were found in 27 of 359 (7.5%) CSF samples: CNS neoplasia 2/30 (6.7%), CNS compression 7/64 (10.9%), CNS inflammation 1/39 (2.6%), idiopathic epilepsy 8/124 (6.5%), and miscellaneous diseases 9/102 (8.8%). Significant associations between surface epithelial cell presence in CSF and age, disease type, CSF TNCC, and CSF protein concentration were not found. Conclusions: The presence of surface epithelial cells was not related to a specific disease group or CSF changes in the studied population. Thus, the presence of surface epithelial cells should be interpreted carefully, as it could represent an incidental finding in CSF specimens.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the use of measuring anti-coronavirus IgG in CSF for the diagnosis of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) involving the CNS in cats. DESIGN: Prospective study. SAMPLE POPULATION: CSF and serum samples from 67 cats. PROCEDURES: CSF and serum samples were allocated into 4 groups: cats with FIP involving the CNS (n = 10), cats with FIP not involving the CNS (13), cats with CNS disorders caused by diseases other than FIP (29), and cats with diseases other than FIP and not involving the CNS (15). Cerebrospinal fluid was evaluated for concentrations of erythrocytes, leukocytes, and total protein. Anti-coronavirus IgG was measured in CSF and serum by indirect immunofluorescence assay. RESULTS: CSF IgG (range of titers, 1:32 to 1:4,096) was detected in 12 cats, including 6 cats with neurologic manifestation of FIP, 4 cats with FIP not involving the CNS, and 2 cats with brain tumors. Cerebrospinal fluid IgG was detected only in cats with correspondingly high serum IgG titers (range, 1:4,096 to 1:16,384) and was positively correlated with serum IgG titers (r = 0.652; P < 0.01), but not with any other CSF parameter. Blood contamination of CSF resulted in < or = 333 erythrocytes/microL in cats with CSF IgG. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The correlation between serum and CSF IgG and the fact that CSF IgG was detected only in strongly seropositive cats suggested that CSF anti-coronavirus IgG was derived from blood. Measurement of anti-coronavirus IgG in CSF was of equivocal clinical use.  相似文献

Background: Cryptococcus spp. is a fungal pathogen with a predilection for the central nervous system (CNS). Objectives: To compare the clinical, advanced imaging, and neuropathologic findings in dogs and cats with CNS cryptococcosis, and to evaluate outcome of treatment in these animals. Animals: Twenty‐six cats and 21 dogs with CNS cryptococcosis. Methods: Medical records were reviewed for clinical findings and results of CNS imaging. Archived cerebrospinal fluid and CNS tissue specimens were reviewed for pathology. Findings in cats were compared with those in dogs and the effects of variables on survival were determined by survival curve analysis. Results: When present, pain was localized to the cervical region in dogs and was generalized or localized to the thoracolumbar spine or pelvic limbs in cats. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings were variable but correlated with CNS histopathological findings of meningitis, meningitis with gelatinous pseudocyst formation, and granulomatous mass lesions. Peripherally enhancing brain lesions were seen only in cats. Histopathologically, the inflammatory response was milder in cats compared with dogs. Remissions of ≥1 year occurred in 32% of treated animals. Altered mentation was associated with negative outcome. Glucocorticoid use after diagnosis was associated with improved survival in the first 10 days. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Lesions seen on MRI reflected neuropathological findings and were similar to those reported in human patients. The immune response to infection may differ between cats and dogs, or relate to the infecting cryptococcal species. Long‐term (>6 month median survival time) survival may be possible in animals surviving ≥4 days after diagnosis.  相似文献

Cerebrospinal fluid was analyzed for total protein, albumin quota, and electrophoretic patterns of albumin and alpha-, beta-, and gamma-globulins in 10 healthy dogs and 35 dogs with CNS disorders. Values obtained in healthy dogs were used to establish control data. Samples also were collected from dogs with neurologic diseases that were classified according to clinical and pathologic diagnosis as inflammation, neoplasm, and spinal cord compression. The albumin quota and total CSF albumin values were used as indicators of blood-brain barrier disturbance. Four patterns were observed on agarose electrophoresis that included intrathecal immunoglobulin production, intrathecal immunoglobulin production combined with blood-brain barrier disturbance, blood-brain barrier disturbance, and unaltered CSF. These patterns correlated with the observed clinical and pathologic conditions. Seemingly, agarose electrophoresis of CSF is a simple and reliable technique that aids in the diagnosis of CNS disorders of dogs.  相似文献

Recovery of viral agents from the central nervous system of cats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Isolation of viruses from the central nervous system (CNS) of cats was attempted using an explant culture technique and subsequent co-cultivation with Crandell feline kidney (CRFK) or Vero cells. Feline syncytia-forming virus was isolated from the CNS of 11 of 16 cats where the initial co-cultivation was with CRFK cells. Feline panleucopaenia virus was isolated from the CNS of 2 adult cats. Co-cultured cells from the CNS of 3 cats contained eosinophilic cytoplasmic and intranuclear inclusions. The cytoplasmic inclusions consisted of tubular structures, 16-18 nm in diameter and up to 500 nm in length, which were similar in morphology to paramyxovirus nucleocapsids. The 3 co-cultured cells with cytoplasmic and intranuclear inclusions showed haemadsorption of guinea pig erythrocytes. The possible identity of these structures, and their association with a previously described primary focal demyelinating lesion in the CNS of cats, is discussed.  相似文献

Inflammatory diseases involving the central nervous system can be difficult to diagnose and frustrating to treat. The clinician can maximize successful treatment of these patients by recognizing the clinical signs in the early stages of disease, following a logical diagnostic plan to identify the specific etiologic agent involved, and formulating an appropriate and aggressive therapeutic plan. Treatment will not always be successful owing to lack of effective treatments and irreversible neurologic damage.  相似文献

Bartonella henselae is occasionally associated with neurological dysfunction in people and some experimentally infected cats. The purpose of this study was to determine whether B henselae seroprevalence or titer magnitude varies among cats with neurological disease, cats with non-neurological diseases, and healthy cats while controlling for age and flea exposure. There was no difference in B henselae seroprevalence rates between cats with seizures and cats with other neurological diseases. Cats with non-neurological disease and healthy cats were more likely than cats with neurological disease to be seropositive. While the median B henselae antibody titer was greater in cats with seizures than in cats with other neurological disease, the median B henselae antibody titer was also greater in healthy cats than cats with seizures. The results suggest that titer magnitude cannot be used alone to document clinical disease associated with B henselae infection and that presence of B henselae antibodies in serum of cats with neurological disease does not prove the clinical signs are related to B henselae.  相似文献

Antagonizing effects of various doses of yohimbine on a xylazine depression of the cerebroneural system (CNS) were studied in cats. Administration of various doses of yohimbine was investigated with respect to its antagonizing effects on various doses of xylazine. The time of CNS depression induced by commonly recommended doses of xylazine (2-4 mg/kg live weight) was shortened statistically significantly by intramuscular injections of yohimbine at a dose of 3 mg per kg live weight. After this yohimbine dose, the animals recovered consciousness already 10-15 minutes from application, with the complete resumption of reflexes. Preventive administration of the same dose of yohimbine hindered reliably the full development of CNS depression after the two xylazine doses (2 and 4 mg/kg live weight).  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Changes in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and anatomical and histopathological central nervous system (CNS) lesions were evaluated, and the presence of Trypanosoma vivax in CNS tissues was investigated through PCR. Twelve adult male goats were divided into three groups (G): G1, infected with T. vivax and evaluated during the acute phase; G2, infected goats evaluated during the chronic phase; and G3, consisting of non-infected goats. Each goat from G1 and G2 was infected with 1.25 × 105 trypomastigotes. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and investigation of T. vivax was performed at the 15th day post-infection (dpi) in G1 goats and on the fifth day after the manifestation of nervous system infection signs in G2 goats. All goats were necropsied, and CNS fragments from G1 and G2 goats were evaluated by PCR for the determination of T. vivax. Hyperthermia, anemia and parasitemia were observed from the fifth dpi for G1 and G2, with the highest parasitemia peak between the seventh and 21st dpi. Nervous system infection signs were observed in three G2 goats between the 30th and 35th dpi. CSF analysis revealed the presence of T. vivax for G2. Meningitis and meningoencephalitis were diagnosed in G2. PCR were positive for T. vivax in all the samples tested. In conclusion, T. vivax may reach the nervous tissue resulting in immune response from the host, which is the cause of progressive clinical and pathological manifestations of the CNS in experimentally infected goats.  相似文献

Three Doberman pinschers were presented on emergency referral for progressive neurological deficits. All three dogs had a similar onset of clinical signs associated with an apparently minor traumatic event. Each dog progressed to significant neurological dysfunction including paraplegia, tetraplegia, and/or loss of deep pain sensation. None of the animals was apparently affected by cervical vertebral instability ("Wobbler's Syndrome"). All were confirmed to have von Willebrand's disease. In all cases, significant epidural hemorrhage was identified. The etiology of each hemorrhage, however, was different for each animal. The cases presented here demonstrate a potential relationship between neurological deficits and the patient's ability to effectively coagulate blood. Hemostatic abnormalities, such as von Willebrand's disease, should be included as possible differential diagnoses or contributing factors in animals demonstrating neurological deficits. These abnormalities should especially be considered following trauma, intervertebral disk extrusion, or spinal surgery.  相似文献

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a common cause of death in cats. Management of this disease has been hampered by difficulties identifying the infection and determining the immunological status of affected cats and by high variability in the clinical, pathological, and immunological characteristics of affected cats. Neurological FIP, which is much more homogeneous than systemic effusive or noneffusive FIP, appears to be a good model for establishing the basic features of FIP immunopathogenesis. Very little information is available about the immunopathogenesis of neurologic FIP, and it is reasonable to use research from the well-characterized mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) immune-mediated encephalitis system, as a template for FIP investigation, and to contrast findings from the MHV model with those of FIP. It is expected that the immunopathogenic mechanisms will have important similarities. Such comparative research may lead to better understanding of FIP immunopathogenesis and rational prospects for management of this frustrating disease.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of isoflurane required to prevent corticocerebral activation, autonomic responses, and purposeful movements after somatic or visceral stimulation in cats anesthetized with isoflurane. ANIMALS: 17 healthy spayed female cats. PROCEDURE: Bispectral index (BIS), autonomic parameters, and purposeful movements were monitored before and after somatic or visceral stimuli in cats anesthetized with isoflurane. End-tidal (ET) isoflurane concentration was varied to determine MAC values for cortical arousal (MAC(BIS)), autonomic responsiveness (MAC(BAR)), and purposeful movement (MAC). Bispectral index values > or = 60 were considered to represent corticocerebral activation. RESULTS: Minimum alveolar concentration for purposeful movement was significantly less than MAC(BIS) and MAC(BAR) for both somatic and visceral stimulation. Individual MAC values for somatic stimulation were not significantly different from respective MAC values for visceral stimulation. The percentage of cats that had a BIS response > or = 60 was inversely related to the end-tidal isoflurane concentration. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Corticocerebral arousal and subcortical autonomic reflexes occured at isoflurane anesthetic concentrations at which reflexive or purposeful movements were absent. These results suggested that isoflurane had a preferential effect on voluntary motor output at low end-tidal isoflurane concentrations, and that sensory pathways, subcortical sympathetic output, and cortical responsiveness are less susceptible to the anesthetic effects of isoflurane. Bispectral index values obtained after somatic or visceral stimulation were sensitive for the detection of early changes in cortical excitability.  相似文献

Fourteen cats were given immunosuppressive doses of either prednisolone (4.4 mg/kg/day) or dexamethasone (0.55 mg/kg/day) for 56 days. Complete blood counts, serum biochemistry profiles and urinalyses were performed on days 0 and 56, and liver biopsies were taken laparoscopically on day 56, because of evidence of hepatic disease on the serum biochemistry profiles. There were significant increases in the cats' mean white blood cell counts, neutrophil counts and monocyte counts, and significant decreases in their mean lymphocyte counts and eosinophil counts. There were consistent increases in the serum concentrations of albumin, glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol. Glycogen deposition, consistent with a steroid hepatopathy, was present to varying degrees in all the liver biopsies. One of the cats developed adverse clinical signs including anorexia, icterus, pruritus and medial curling of the pinnae, some of which were suspected to be related to the glucocorticoid therapy.  相似文献

Neurologic disease is seen commonly in cats, with infectious causes accounting for 30-45% of cases. However, since a specific infection cannot be identified in 12-40% of these cases, it is essential that we try to understand these cases better in the hope that we can eventually identify the cause(s), and so determine how best to treat and/or prevent them.  相似文献
