The heart rate and the pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PWP) was measured in 10 healthy warmblood horses and in six warmblood horses with atrial fibrillation (AF) at rest and during standardised treadmill exercise. During treadmill exercise, the increase in heart rate was significantly higher in the horses with AF than in the healthy horses. Horses with AF showed a significantly higher increase in PWP at treadmill velocities of 5m/s and faster, than did the healthy horses. The differences in PWP between both groups increased with treadmill strain. The present study demonstrates that there is an influence on the haemodynamics in horses with AF during treadmill exercise, which could explain exercise intolerance in some horses with lone AF.  相似文献

In 12 healthy warmblood horses (six trained and six untrained) the pulmonary wedge pressure and heart frequency was measured at rest and during a standardised exercise test on a treadmill. The mean pulmonary wedge pressure at rest was 14.53 +/- 2.36 mmHg. There was no significant difference in pulmonary wedge pressure either at rest or during exercise between trained and untrained horses. During walking (1.8 m/s) the mean pulmonary wedge pressure was 19.62 +/- 4.03 mmHg, during trotting (4 und 5 m/s) it was between 22.38 +/- 3.92 mmHg and 25.28 +/- 3.7 mmHg. During canter (6 m/s) and gallop (8 m/s) the mean pulmonary wedge pressure increased to a level of 25.54 +/- 4.3 mmHg and 31.86 +/- 4.29 mmHg. There was a significant increase in pulmonary wedge pressure with each incremental step of the standardised treadmill test. Concerning mean heart frequency a highly significant increase could be observed at the beginning and at the end (treadmill speed of 7 and 8 m/s) of the standardised exercise test. At higher intensity of the exercise test (7 m/s and 8 m/s) untrained horses showed a significantly increased heart rate compared to trained horses. Neither at rest nor during the different exercise levels a significant correlation factor greater 0.5 between heart frequency and pulmonary wedge pressure could be observed. The increase of heart frequency and pulmonary wedge pressure during exercise showed no correlation. Between left atrial size and pulmonary wedge pressure a statistical weak correlation could be observed up to a treadmill velocity of 6 and 7 m/s.  相似文献

The effects of exercise of different intensities on blood concentrations of glucose, lactate, pyruvate, free fatty acids and glycerol were studied in a group of clinically normal horses. Blood lactate, pyruvate and lactate/pyruvate ratio increased during exercise, particularly during galloping. These changes occurred within the first 12-15 seconds of exercise indicating that anaerobic metabolic pathways are brought into use very quickly in the strenuously exercising horse. Since blood glycerol levels were significantly increased during exercise body lipids were also mobilised. At the same time, free fatty acid levels increased during cantering but decreased during galloping indicating increased fat oxidation during strenuous exercise. It was concluded that both lipids and carbohydrates are as important energy sources in the exercising horse as in other species.  相似文献

Reason for performing study: The effect of palatal instability (PI) on measures of ventilation and gas exchange is not well understood. Objectives: To assess to what degree different severities of naturally occurring palatal dysfunction affect ventilation and gas exchange during strenuous exercise. Methods: A retrospective study was performed using data collected from 40 Thoroughbred racehorses diagnosed with naturally occurring dynamic palatal dysfunction during high speed treadmill exercise. Upper airway videoendoscopic recordings were made concurrently with measurements of ventilation and gas exchange. Three categories of soft palate dysfunction were formed: mild palatal instability; moderate to severe palatal instability; and dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP). Minute ventilation, tidal volume, breathing frequency, end‐tidal carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations, oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production were calculated during the last 10 s of the exercise test, when airway obstruction was at its worst. Results: There was a trend for minute ventilation, tidal volume, oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production to decrease with increasing degree of palatal dysfunction, although statistically significant differences were only seen with DDSP. End‐tidal carbon dioxide increased and end‐tidal oxygen decreased with increasing obstruction, with both parameters showing significant differences between mild PI and moderate to severe PI. Conclusions: The results suggest that PI has a negative effect on certain respiratory parameters, although this is not as great as that associated with DDSP. Potential relevance: Palatal instability may be detrimental to athletic performance even when progression to DDSP does not occur.  相似文献

Four standardbred horses with subcutaneously relocated carotid arteries were given a seven week training programme of treadmill exercise at a gradient of 19 per cent in order to assess if there were any effects of exercise and training on haematology, arterial blood gas and acid base measurements, plasma biochemistry and heart rate. The exercise consisted of one minute walking at 110 metres/minute followed by five minutes trotting at 200 metres/minute, twice daily in the first week. The period of trotting exercise was increased by one minute per week so that by the seventh week the horses were being given 12 minutes trotting twice daily. Before training commenced venous blood samples, for complete blood counts and plasma biochemistry, and arterial samples, for blood gas, acid base and lactate measurements, were taken at rest, after five minutes and 15 minutes of treadmill exercise (200 metres/minute) and 30 minutes and 60 minutes after completing the exercise. Heart rate was measured by telemetric electrocardiogram at similar intervals. This exercise test and blood collection were repeated after one, three, five and seven weeks of training. The only significant changes were a decrease in exercise lactate with training, increases in exercise and recovery total protein. The haematological response to treadmill exercise included an increase in certain red cell parametes and a leucocytosis which was caused by both a neutrophilia and a lymphocytosis. These effects had largely disappeared by 30 minutes after exercise and all values had returned to resting values by one hour after exercise.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Normal Standardbred horses were given an incremental exercise test on a horizontal treadmill to evaluate the influence of exercise on gas exchange, resistance, dynamic compliance and inertance of the respiratory system. The exercise test consisted of 2 min exercise steps at each of the following speeds: 2.4 m/sec (walk), 4.5 m/sec (slow trot), 7.0 m/sec (fast trot) and 10 m/sec (gallop). At rest and after 1 min of exercise at each step, airflow, tidal volume, respiratory frequency, pharyngeal, mid-oesophageal and transdiaphragmatic pressures and arterial blood gas tensions were measured. The same horses were subsequently treated intravenously with clenbuterol (0.8 microgram/kg) and an identical exercise test and measurement performed 10 min after clenbuterol injection. In response to exercise, there were large increases in tidal volume, respiratory frequency, airflow and pressures. Exercise was associated with a decrease in upper airway resistance but total pulmonary resistance was unchanged. Exercise did not alter inertance or dynamic compliance, horses became hypoxaemic, and at 10 m/sec (galloping) also developed hypercarbia. Treatment with clenbuterol did not alter any of these measurements in response to exercise. These data suggest that dilation of upper airways occurs during exercise, and that inertial forces are important in strenuously exercising horses and may influence the accuracy of dynamic compliance determinations at high exercise intensities.  相似文献

Transaortic blood pressures were recorded in seven horses using catheter mounted transducers during various types of supraventricular arrhythmia. Changes in left ventricular (LV) and aortic (Ao) pulse contours were associated with variation in pulse interval (PI). When PI lengthened there was a rise in LV end diastolic pressure (LVEDP) associated with a prolonged filling time. In contrast, a long PI resulted in a reduced end diastolic Ao pressure (AoEDP) due to a prolonged arterial 'run off'. LVdP/dt max representing the peak rate of rise of pressure during the isovolumic contraction period was not consistently affected by changes in PI. Stepwise linear regression was used to examine the simultaneous relationships of a number of variables derived from the LV and Ao contours. Peak LV pressure (LVPp) was directly related to AoEDP (seven of seven horses) and LVEDP (four of seven). Ao systolic pulse pressure (SPP) was directly related to LVEDP (four of seven) and inversely related to AoEDP (three of seven). Neither LVPp nor SPP were consistently related to LVdP/dt max. The peak positive gradient between LV and Ao pressures was inversely related to AoEDP (six of seven) and directly related to LVEDP and LVdP/dt max (three of seven). The peak rate of rise of the Ao pressure contour during ejection (AodP/dt max) was inversely related to AoEDP (seven of seven) and directly related to LVEDP (four of seven). It was also directly related to LVdP/dt max in four horses but was inversely related in one. The peak rate of fall of the LV pressure contour during relaxation (-LVdP/dt max) was directly related to LVPp (five of seven).  相似文献

The effect of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition during exercise on lactate production was investigated in five Thoroughbred horses. A standard exercise test (SET), consisting of three canters (approximately 55 per cent VO2max), with walking and trotting between each canter, was performed twice (control and test, in random order) by each horse. Nphi-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; 20 mg kg-1), a competitive inhibitor of NOS, induced a significant increase (P < 0.05) in plasma lactate [5.7 (2.9) vs 11.8 (3.8) mmol L-1], which continued to increase despite administration of L-arginine, the substrate for NOS. There were no differences in cardiac output (Q) or the total body oxygen consumption (VO) between each SET. The results show that non-specific inhibition of NOS isoforms during exercise in the horse increases plasma lactate concentration, although the mechanism/s remain uncertain.  相似文献

Six adult horses with normal blood gas values, normal thoracic radiographs and free from overt signs of respiratory disease were confined in flotation tanks for periods from one to seven weeks. With one exception, they all coughed, had a variable amount of nasal discharge and, at autopsy, showed cranio-ventral alterations to their lungs which were characterised by patchy irregular areas of absorption atelectasis with or without an inflammatory reaction and an accompanying alveolar emphysema.  相似文献

The effect of strenuous exercise on the functional capacity of pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) and bronchoalveolar lavage-derived lymphocytes was determined in eight horses prior to and after 7 weeks of training. Strenuous exercise had no effect on the total cell count or the percentage of live cells in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples prior to or following training. However, training was associated with a significant increase in the total cell count of pre-exercise BAL samples and a significant reduction in the percentage of live cells in post-exercise samples. Strenuous exercise was associated with impaired phagocytosis by PAM after 7 weeks of training but had no effect on similar samples obtained from untrained horses. The oxidative burst activity of PAM was significantly increased following strenuous exercise for both untrained and trained horses. BAL -derived lymphocyte oxidative burst was similarly affected following training. These results suggest that strenuous exercise and training may influence pulmonary immune cell function.  相似文献

To investigate the effect of moderate to high intensity exercise of up to 6 min duration on plasma potassium and lactate concentrations, 6 Thoroughbred horses were studied using a treadmill at a 5 degree incline. Each test consisted of an 8-min standardised warm-up followed by an exercise bout at 8, 9, 10 or 12 m/sec. The horses were galloped at each speed for up to a maximum of 6 min or until signs of fatigue were present. The horses were then walked at 0 degree incline. Carotid arterial blood samples were taken during and after the exercise. At 8, 9 and 10 m/sec there was a general pattern of an initial rise in potassium to a peak around 1.5 min of exercise with the concentration then slowly decreasing. At 12 m/sec there was a continuous rise to a peak at the end of exercise in all horses. Immediately after exercise there was a rapid return (within 3-4 min) to the potassium concentrations recorded at the end of the warm-up period. Plasma lactate peaked around the end of exercise at all speeds. At the highest intensity of exercise the mechanisms for the re-uptake of potassium did not appear to be able to match the rate of efflux. In contrast, at less intense work loads, the rate of re-uptake appeared to be similar to or slightly greater than the rate of efflux. It is possible that a disturbance in this balance between efflux and re-uptake could result in a disturbance in normal neuromuscular function during exercise.  相似文献

SUMMARY: Endoscopy of the upper respiratory tract was performed in 100 horses during high speed treadmill exercise. Reasons for endoscopy were a history of an abnormal noise during exercise in 75 horses, poor performance in 17 horses and to evaluate the results of upper respiratory tract surgery in 8 horses. Of the 75 horses with a history of an abnormal noise during exercise the cause was determined in 67 (89%). Endoscopic abnormalities were detected at rest in 40 of these 75 horses (53%). In these 40 horses, a similar diagnosis as to the cause of the abnormal noise was made at rest and during exercise on the treadmill in 19 cases, while in the remaining 21 the endoscopic findings during exercise varied from that seen at rest. This included 3 horses in which a diagnosis was made at rest but no abnormalities were detected during exercise. Some of the findings during treadmill endoscopy included laryngeal dysfunction, grades 3, 4 and 5 (22 cases), dorsal displacement of the soft palate (20), epiglottic entrapment (8), epiglottic flutter (4), aryepiglottic fold flutter (4), pharyngeal collapse (3), arytenoiditis (3), vocal cord flutter (3), false nostril noise (2), pharyngeal lymphoid hyperplasia (2), soft palate haemorrhage (1) and positional arytenoid collapse (1). More than one abnormality was observed during exercise in 7 horses. A complete and correct diagnosis based on the resting endoscopy findings alone was made in 19 (25%) of these 75 cases. In the 17 horses examined because of poor performance, no abnormalities were detected during treadmill endoscopy that were not evident at rest. None of these 17 horses presented with a history of an abnormal respiratory noise, although one, diagnosed as having grade 4 laryngeal function at rest and exercise, did make a characteristic inspiratory noise during treadmill exercise. Eight horses were evaluated after surgery for correction of laryngeal hemiplegia, as the post-operative performance or the amount of respiratory noise present was considered unsatisfactory. Of these, 3 were found to have a satisfactory airway during exercise and other reasons for poor performance were detected; 3 had insufficient abduction; and 2 had intermittent dorsal displacement of the soft palate. Endoscopy of the upper respiratory tract was found to be a useful technique for evaluating the cause of abnormal respiratory noise in most cases. We concluded that treadmill endoscopy in horses presented for poor performance, without a history of an abnormal respiratory noise, was of little value. The technique, in conjunction with arterial blood gas measurements, was useful in determining the efficacy of surgical treatment of laryngeal hemiplegia.  相似文献

The development of a radio-stethoscope for horses is described. The equipment consisted of a sound transducer applied to the skin adjacent to the trachea and a radio transmitter attached to the saddle. The signals emitted were detected by telemetry and recorded on a magnetic tape-recorder. The recorder incorporated a monitor earphone so that sounds could be reproduced at the time of recording. The frequency response obtainable ranged from a few Hz to 4 KHz. This technique provided an objective means of studying the respiratory sounds generated during exercise although absolute values could not be measured.  相似文献

In the first series of experiments enema containing a water soluble marker was given to two groups of horses fasted for 1 and 18 hours, respectively. The marker was only in 1 out of 14 experiments found orally of the pelvic flexure (Table II). Fasting seemed to facilitate the flow in oral direction. The results were discussed with the possible significance in the treatment of large intestinal impactions. In the second series the effect of enemas on water, electrolyte and acid-base status in the acute furosemide-dehydrated horse was studied. Moderate acidifying and hypokalemic effect was encountered, while no effect was demonstrated on the water balance. The choice of method is questioned, and no conclusion is given with relation to a rehydrating effect of enemas.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal treadmill slope for trotters to produce the same heart rate and blood lactate responses as on the track during a standardized exercise test. Nine 2-year-old French trotters performed exercise tests on a training track and on a treadmill set at an incline of 0, 2 or 4%. For all horses, track testing was performed on day 1 and then on the treadmill according to a Latin-square design. The track test utilized three steps each of 3 min at speeds of 470, 530, 590 m/min and the same speeds were used on the treadmill. Derived physiological variables such as the speed at a HR of 200 bpm (V(200)) and the speed inducing blood lactate concentrations of 4 mmol/L (V(4)) were calculated. There were significant differences for V(200)and V(4)(P<0.05) between the track and the treadmill data when the treadmill was set at inclines of 0 and 4%, but no significant differences with the treadmill set at a 2% incline. The optimal treadmill incline to reproduce similar responses to those on the track was determined by regression analysis, and was found to be 2.4% for the two most often utilized derived physiological variables, V(4)and V(200).  相似文献

A group of clinically normal horses was subjected to controlled strenuous exercise. Elevated serum concentrations of lactic dehydrogenase, aldolase and creatine kinase were observed after exercise but no significant change in serum glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase was noted. These changes were reduced by repeated exposure to exercise suggesting that measurement of serum enzyme elevations, particularly creatine kinase, might be a useful index of fitness in the horse. Administration of prednisolone prior to exercise also reduced these changes. Since the serum enzyme concentrations had returned to normal within 72 hours of exercise, and since the cytoplasmic enzyme glutamic oxalacetic transaminase was not released from the tissues this supported the hypothesis that efflux of intracellular enzymes into the circulation was due to a temporary selective change in cell membrane permeability rather than to tissue necrosis.  相似文献
