Leaf conductance at three absolute humidity deficits (AHDs) (7, 14 and 21 g m(-3)), hydraulic conductance and components of tissue water potential were measured in one-year-old loblolly pine seedlings from six origins representing the geographic range of the species. Measurements were made on seedlings grown (a) with ample water (moist regime) and (b) with recurring severe drought (dry regime). However, all seedlings were well-watered prior to and during measurements. Seedlings grown in the moist regime had greater mean leaf conductances (0.30 versus 0.13 cm s(-1)) and greater responses to AHD than seedlings grown in the dry regime. They also exhibited greater hydraulic conductances (0.53 versus 0.35 microg cm(-2) s(-1) MPa(-1), less negative osmotic potentials (-1.45 versus -1.57 MPa) and higher relative water contents at turgor loss (0.72 versus 0.65). Seed source differences in water relations characteristics were detected only in seedlings grown in the moist regime. In these, trees from the three interior origins had greater mean leaf conductances than those from the three coastal sources (0.32 versus 0.28 cm s(-1)), but no differences in response to changing AHD were observed. Seedlings from North Carolina had lower osmotic potentials at turgor loss than those from Florida, Georgia or Texas. These differences in water relations characteristics are not clearly related to the observed greater survival ability of trees from interior origins compared with those from coastal origins. 相似文献

Overstory conditions influence understory microclimate and resource availability, leading to gradients in evaporative demand and moisture availability that influence seedling water relations. Partial canopies may either reduce seedling moisture stress by ameliorating environmental conditions, or increase moisture stress by reducing soil moisture availability. This study used stable isotope ratios of oxygen (δ 18O) and carbon (δ 13C) and mass-based foliar nitrogen concentrations to investigate changes in transpiration ( E), stomatal conductance ( gs) and intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) of pine seedlings across an overstory gradient from open canopy gap environments to closed canopy forest. Foliar δ 18O increased sharply from basal areas of 0–10 m 2 ha −1 in Pinus banksiana, Pinus resinosa, and Pinus strobus seedlings, followed by a more gradual increase with further increases in basal area. Foliar δ 13C followed a similar, but less pronounced pattern in P. banksiana and P. strobus seedlings, and had no apparent relationship with overstory basal area in P. resinosa seedlings. The slope of the δ 18O:δ 13C relationship was positive for every species. Foliar nitrogen concentrations were not correlated with overstory basal area. These results suggest seedling E declined as overstory basal area increased due to reductions in gs, while iWUE increased slightly from open gaps to partial canopy environments. Open gap environments appear to provide sufficient moisture to sustain high leaf-level gas exchange rates in the species we studied, while relatively small increases in overstory basal area apparently promote rapid declines in gs, leading to greatly reduced seedling water loss and small increases in iWUE. 相似文献

Functional convergence in hydraulic architecture and water relations, and potential trade-offs in resource allocation were investigated in six dominant neotropical savanna tree species from central Brazil during the peak of the dry season. Common relationships between wood density and several aspects of plant water relations and hydraulic architecture were observed. All species and individuals shared the same negative exponential relationship between sapwood saturated water content and wood density. Wood density was a good predictor of minimum (midday) leaf water potential and total daily transpiration, both of which decreased linearly with increasing wood density for all individuals and species. With respect to hydraulic architecture, specific and leaf-specific hydraulic conductivity decreased and the leaf:sapwood area ratio increased more than 5-fold as wood density increased from 0.37 to 0.71 g cm(-3) for all individuals and species. Wood density was also a good predictor of the temporal dynamics of water flow in stems, with the time of onset of sap flow in the morning and the maximum sap flow tending to occur progressively earlier in the day as wood density increased. Leaf properties associated with wood density included stomatal conductance, specific leaf area, and osmotic potential at the turgor loss point, which decreased linearly with increasing wood density. Wood density increased linearly with decreasing bulk soil water potential experienced by individual plants during the dry season, suggesting that wood density was greatest in individuals with mostly shallow roots, and therefore limited access to more abundant soil water at greater depths. Despite their taxonomic diversity and large intrapopulation differences in architectural traits, the six co-occurring species and their individuals shared similar functional relationships between all pairs of variables studied. Thus, rather than differing intrinsically in physiological responsiveness, the species and the individuals appeared to have distinct operating ranges along common physiological response curves dictated by plant architectural and structural features. The patterns of water uptake and access to soil water during the dry season appeared to be the main determinant of wood density, which constrained evolutionary options related to plant water economy and hydraulic architecture, leading to functional convergence in the neotropical savanna trees studied. 相似文献

Red pine seedlings were grown for 16 weeks under contrasting fertilizat (conventional, exponential) and moisture (wet, moist, dry) regimes to assess preconditioning effects of treatments on biomass production, nutrient uptake and allocation, and water relations. Growth, nutrient status, and water relations were affected more by moisture availability than by fertilization regime. Exponential fertilization under limited irrigation lowered shoot/root mass ratio, increased root nutrient reserves, and enhanced drought avoidance compared to conventional fertilization regimes. Drought treatments decreased nutrient uptake in the shoots of both fertilization regimes by 24%, but increased nutrient accumulation in the roots by 39% in the exponential regime compared to 17% in the conventional. These results may explain improved outplanting performance noted for exponentially fertilized container stock. 相似文献

Comparison of the root system growth and water transport of southern pine species after planting in different root-zone environments is needed to guide decisions regarding when, and what species to plant. Evaluation of how seed source affects root system responses to soil conditions will allow seed sources to be matched to planting conditions. The root growth and hydraulic conductivity of three sources each of shortleaf, loblolly and longleaf pine seedlings were evaluated for 28 days in a seedling growth system that simulated the planting environment. Across species, an increase in root-zone temperature alleviated limitations to root growth caused by water stress. In the coldest temperature, longleaf pine maintained a higher hydraulic conductivity compared to shortleaf and loblolly pine. Without water limitation, the root growth and hydraulic conductivity of shortleaf and loblolly pine were superior to that of longleaf pine, but as water availability decreased, the root growth of longleaf pine surpassed that of loblolly pine. Hydraulic conductivities of the seed sources differed, and differences were attributed to either new root growth, or an increase in the efficiency of the root system to transport water. 相似文献

Mediterranean communities have been historically conditioned by fire and have therefore developed adaptive traits. Serotiny
is a strategy that increases fire resilience by storing seeds in the canopy, protecting them from heat and delaying their
dispersion. Aleppo pine is an important serotinous tree species in the low altitude, near-coastal Mediterranean Basin. Differences
in serotinous and non-serotinous cones have been detected previously but in order to resolve a gap in the knowledge on seed
adaptation to fire, we focused this study on two fire-prone habitats in southern Italy. Several cones were sampled and opened
in an oven at two different temperatures in order to group seeds according to provenance and cone type (serotinous or non-serotinous).
The sampled seeds were weighed and their coats were removed. Seed size, embryo diameter and nutritive tissue thickness were
recorded. We found that seeds with greater weight and size came from the more humid site and from non-serotinous cones. Also,
we observed wax and cutine cells formed a thicker seed coat in seeds from the more humid site using a scanning electron microscope.
The scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed higher Si and Ca concentrations in the covers
of serotinous seeds. Seeds from different provenance and cone types have anatomic and morphological differences that confer
different properties against heating. This knowledge can improve post-fire management and promote restoration tools. 相似文献

The height variation of Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) seedling stock was studied using data from annual inventories of seedling crops. The heights of 240 batches of 2-year-old and 3-year-old transplanted seedling from the years 1973–1986 grown at three nurseries in southern Finland were examined. From each batch, 100 clusters of three successive seedlings were systematically located and measured. The mean heights of the seedling batches ranged from 7.8 to 27.0 cm, with a mean of 14.1 cm. Within batch standard deviations ranged from 1.7 to 7.8 cm, with a mean standard deviation of 3.7 cm. There was considerable variation in the mean heights of seedling batches both within a given year and between years. However, estimated variance components of seedling height showed that year, batch and cluster effect each accounted for about 20 percent of the total variance, while seedling effect explained the remaining 40 percent. The implications of results for single tree and batch grading are discussed. 相似文献

Two-year-old Corsican pine (Pinus nigra ssp. laricio var. Corsicana) seedlings were either well watered or subjected to a moderate drought for one month before being lifted from the nursery bed on October 9 and transplanted. Well-watered, non-transplanted seedlings served as controls. Needle predawn water potential (Psi(wp)), non-structural carbohydrate concentrations and plant development (survival, bud break, shoot elongation) were assessed before and during the first growing season after transplanting. On April 16, just before bud break, Psi(wp) was lower for the well-watered + transplanted and drought-conditioned + transplanted seedlings (Psi(wp) = -1.45 and -1.83 MPa, respectively) than for the controls (Psi(wp) = -0.56). There was a close relationship between the Psi(wp) measured on April 16 and bud break, shoot elongation and plant survival during the following growing period. Above a Psi(wp) of -1.1 MPa, all plants developed normally. Between -1.1 MPa and -1.6 MPa, bud break, and thus shoot elongation, did not occur in all plants. Between -1.6 MPa and -2.1 MPa, the plants were characterized by the absence of shoot growth, but mortality was zero. Below -2.1 MPa, there was a large increase in plant mortality. On April 16, starch concentrations were markedly lower in the roots of transplanted seedlings than in the controls. There was a positive correlation between Psi(wp) and root starch concentration. The Psi(wp) (-2.3 MPa) at which complete starch depletion was observed in the roots corresponded to the Psi(wp) below which plants did not survive. These results suggest that mechanisms specifically linked to altered water status and metabolic processes associated with altered carbohydrate status are involved in transplanting stress; however, it was not possible to disentangle the two effects. Drought conditioning did not lead to a marked increase in soluble carbohydrate concentrations, as reported for other species, and did not increase plant tolerance to transplanting stress. 相似文献

To determine the effects of CO(2)-enriched air and root restriction on photosynthetic capacity, we measured net photosynthetic rates of 1-year-old loblolly pine seedlings grown in 0.6-, 3.8- or 18.9-liter pots in ambient (360 micro mol mol(-1)) or 2x ambient CO(2) (720 micro mol mol(-1)) concentration for 23 weeks. We also measured needle carbohydrate concentration and water relations to determine whether feedback inhibition or water stress was responsible for any decreases in net photosynthesis. Across all treatments, carbon dioxide enrichment increased net photosynthesis by approximately 60 to 70%. Net photosynthetic rates of seedlings in the smallest pots decreased over time with the reduction occurring first in the ambient CO(2) treatment and then in the 2x ambient CO(2) treatment. Needle starch concentrations of seedlings grown in the smallest pots were two to three times greater in the 2x ambient CO(2) treatment than in the ambient CO(2) treatment, but decreased net photosynthesis was not associated with increased starch or sugar concentrations. The reduction in net photosynthesis of seedlings in small pots was correlated with decreased needle water potentials, indicating that seedlings in the small pots had restricted root systems and were unable to supply sufficient water to the shoots. We conclude that the decrease in net photosynthesis of seedlings in small pots was not the result of CO(2) enrichment or an accumulation of carbohydrates causing feedback inhibition, but was caused by water stress. 相似文献

Few studies have investigated the ecophysiology of natural seedling establishment in forest trees not associated with anthropogenic disturbance. Photosynthesis and water relations measurements were made on one- through four-year-old seedlings of Abies lasiocarpa Nutt. (subalpine fir) establishing naturally in an understory environment. First (current)-year seedlings generally had only cotyledons, whereas most second-year seedlings had both cotyledons and primary leaves. Mortality was high (> 60%) in first-year seedlings with the greatest mortality (> 90%) measured at the more open, sun-exposed sites within the understory. Seedling mortality was negligible after the first year of growth at shaded microsites and after the second year of growth at sunny microsites. Photosynthetic CO(2) uptake at light saturation was considerably lower in first-year than in fourth-year seedlings (0.6 micromol m(-2) s(-1) versus 1.7 micromol m(-2) s(-1)) and occurred at lower solar irradiance (240 micromol m(-2) s(-1) versus 600 micromol m(-2) s(-1) of photosynthetically active radiation). Differences in photosynthetic capacity were due to differences in both stomatal and non-stomatal limitations to CO(2) uptake. Carbon dioxide assimilation in first- and second-year seedlings was 28 and 29%, respectively, of the mean value measured for fourth-year seedlings. Although first-year seedlings had low transpiration rates, their water use efficiency (photosynthesis/transpiration) was less than half that of fourth-year seedlings and their water potentials were lower than those of all other age classes (0.46 mol CO(2) mmol(-1) H(2)O and -3.0 MPa, respectively). The stomatal limitation to CO(2) uptake was approximately 21% in first- and second-year seedlings, and increased to 39% in fourth-year seedlings. Intercellular CO(2) concentrations were greater in first- and second-year seedlings (255 and 250 microl l(-1), respectively) than in third- and fourth-year seedlings (203 and 186 microl l(-1), respectively). Thus, abrupt increases in water status and photosynthetic capacity after the first or second year of growth appear crucial for survival to maturity. Moreover, differences in temperature and water relations according to microsite may be major factors determining seedling establishment and, thus, the distributional and successional patterns observed for adult trees of Abies lasiocarpa. 相似文献

We investigated the influence of shelterwood conditions on water relations and growth of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings on two harsh sites in eastern Texas. Site I was harvested to provide four overstory density treatments (0, 2.3, 4.6 and 9.2 m(2) of residual basal area per ha). To quantify the effects of overstory competition, trenched and nontrenched subplots, each containing 25 one-year-old seedlings, were established within each overstory treatment plot, and predawn and midday water potentials (Psi(w)), seedling growth and survival were measured during the growing season. Leaf area and seedling biomass partitioning were measured at the end of the growing season. Site II was harvested to provide two overstory density treatments (0 and 6.9 m(2) ha(-1)) and planted with one-year-old loblolly pine seedlings. Seedling Psi(w), stomatal conductance (g(wv)), transpiration flux density (E), leaf area, height and survival were determined. On Site I, seedling Psi(w) increased with increasing overstory basal area, whereas trenching only substantially affected Psi(w) of seedlings in the 9.2 m(2) ha(-1) overstory treatment. Growth was not affected by overstory treatment or trenching. On Site II, Psi(w) and g(wv) were highest during the morning hours and lowest in the afternoon, whereas E peaked in the afternoon. Vapor pressure deficits and photosynthetic photon flux density were major factors in determining g(wv) differences between treatments. On individual days, the presence of an overstory increased Psi(w) and reduced both g(wv) and E. On Site II, leaf area was affected by overstory treatment throughout most of the study. We conclude that the presence of an overstory can have ameliorative effects on harsh sites at the western fringe of the loblolly pine natural range. 相似文献

Hydraulic architecture parameters, water relation parameters and wood anatomy were studied in roots and shoots of the flood-tolerant tree Annona glabra L. on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Hydraulic conductivity, leaf specific conductivity, and Huber value were similar to the corresponding values for tree species living in non-flooded habitats. The vulnerability of stems to loss of hydraulic conductivity resulting from embolism was low (50% loss of conductivity at -3.3 MPa). The lowest leaf water potential measured in the field was about -1.0 MPa, indicating that A. glabra has a large margin of safety from embolism, which may provide protection against rare drought events, or may be an adaptation to brackish mangrove habitats. Low absolute conductivity of roots was compensated for by an increase in the number of roots. More than two-thirds of whole-plant resistance to water flow was located in the roots. 相似文献

Leaf growth, rate of leaf photosynthesis and tissue water relations of shoots of Eucalyptus marginata Donn ex Sm. (jarrah) seedlings were studied during a soil drying and rewatering cycle in a greenhouse experiment. Rates of leaf growth and photosynthesis were sensitive to water deficits. The rate of leaf growth decreased linearly with predawn leaf water potential to reach zero at -1.5 MPa. Rate of leaf growth did not recover completely within the first three days after rewatering. Midday photosynthetic rates declined to 40% of those of well-watered seedlings at a predawn leaf water potential of -1.0 MPa and reached zero at -2.2 MPa. Photosynthetic rate recovered rapidly following rewatering and almost fully recovered by the second day after rewatering. All tissue water relations parameters, except the bulk modulus of elasticity, changed significantly as the soil dried and recovered completely by the third day after rewatering. Changes in osmotic pressure at full turgor of 0.4 MPa indicated considerable capacity for osmotic adjustment. However, because there was little osmotic adjustment until predawn leaf water potential fell below -1.5 MPa, this capacity would not have enhanced seedling growth, although it may have increased seedling survival. The sensitivity of photosynthesis and relative water content to water deficits suggests that greenhouse-grown E. marginata seedlings behave like mesophytic plants, even though E. marginata seedlings naturally grow in a drought-prone environment. 相似文献

Early growth and physiology of longleaf pine ( Pinus palustris Mill.) seedlings were studied in response to light, water and nitrogen under greenhouse conditions. The experiment was conducted with 1-year-old seedlings grown in 11.3 l pots. The experimental design was a split-plot factorial with two levels (low and high) of each of the factors, replicated in three blocks. The four factorial combinations of water and nitrogen were randomly applied to 15 pots (sub-plots) in each of the light treatment (main plot). Data were collected on survival, root collar diameter (RCD), and height on a monthly basis. Biomass (shoot, root and needle), leaf area index, specific needle area, and needle nutrient (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg) concentrations were determined following final harvest after 16 months. Physiological data (net photosynthesis and transpiration) were collected monthly from March to July during the second growing season. Height and RCD were significantly influenced by nitrogen and water and by the interaction between them with no apparent effect of light. Seedlings grew 93% taller in the high nitrogen and well watered (HNWW) treatment compared to the low nitrogen and water stressed (LNWS) treatment. Similarly, a significant increase (78%) in RCD was observed for seedlings in the HNWW treatment over the LNWS treatment. Light, along with water and nitrogen, played an important role in seedling biomass growth, especially when water was not limiting. Biomass partitioning (as measured by root:shoot ratio) was affected only by nitrogen and water. Nutrient stress had a greater influence on carbon allocation (69% increase in root:shoot ratio) than water stress (19% increase). Net photosynthesis (Pnet) was significantly higher for seedlings in the high resource than in the low resource treatments with significant light×water and nitrogen×water interactions. Transpiration rate was higher (75%) under the WW treatment compared to the WS treatment. Longleaf pine seedlings grown under the LNWW treatment had the lowest foliar nitrogen (0.71%) whereas seedlings in the HNWS treatment had the highest (1.46%). Increasing the availability of light (through larger canopy openings or controlling midstory density) and soil nitrogen (through fertilization) may not result in greater Pnet and improved seedling growth unless soil water is not limiting. 相似文献

In a 14-week study, 1-year-old Aleppo pine seedlings were grownin two growth chambers. Seedlings were artificially hardenedby decreasing photoperiod and temperature. In each chamber halfof the seedlings were fertilized with nitrogen (8.4 mg seedling 1).In order to determine the relative importance of the hardeningenvironment versus fertilization, each chamber was programmedto decrease night temperatures down to a low of 8 or 4°C.Chlorophyll fluorescence and frost hardiness was measured fivetimes during the experiment. A sample of seedlings from eachtreatment was exposed to an artificial frost at 5°Cand the freezing effects were assessed by measurements of chlorophyllfluorescence and visual evaluation of needle damage. Seedlingsincreased their frost hardiness during the experiment in allthe treatments but the ratio of variable to maximal chlorophyllfluorescence ( Fv/ Fm) measured before freezing did not vary duringthe experiment. This indicates that Aleppo pine maintains itsphotosynthetic ability during hardening in contrast to otherconiferous species from colder climates. The effect of nitrogenfertilization on frost hardiness was small in comparison withchamber effect. Nitrogen fertilization slightly delayed theacquisition of hardening in the coldest chamber. Seedlings inthe warmest chamber did not become fully resistant to 5°C,but in the coldest chamber, where night temperature reached4°C, all the seedlings were resistant to the frost. Severedamage caused by frost could be related to a rapid rise of minimalfluorescence ( F0) but the best index of damage was the dropof Fv/ Fm after freezing. 相似文献

Many authors have attempted to explain the adaptive response of tropical plants to drought based on studies of water relations at the leaf level. Little attention has been given to the role of the xylem system in the control of plant water requirements. To evaluate this role, we studied the hydraulic architecture and water relations parameters of two tropical canopy trees with contrasting leaf phenologies: deciduous Pseudobombax septenatum (Jacq.) Dug and evergreen Ochroma pyramidale (Cav. ex lamb) Urban, both in the family Bombacaceae. The hydraulic architecture parameters studied include hydraulic conductivity, specific conductivity, leaf specific conductivity, and Huber value. Water relations parameters include leaf water potential, stem and leaf water storage capacitance, transpiration, stomatal conductance, and vulnerability of stems to cavitation and loss of hydraulic conductivity by embolisms. Compared to temperate trees, both species showed a pattern of highly vulnerable stems (50% loss of conductivity due to embolism at water potentials less than 1 MPa) with high leaf specific conductivities. The vulnerability of xylem to water-stress-induced embolism was remarkably similar for the two species but the leaf specific conductivity of petioles and leaf-bearing stems of the evergreen species, Ochroma (e.g., 9.08 and 11.4 x 10(-4) kg s(-1) m(-1) MPa(-1), respectively), were 3.4 and 2.3 times higher, respectively, than those of the deciduous species, Pseudobombax (e.g., 2.64 and 5.15 x 10(-4) kg s(-1) m(-1) MPa(-1), respectively). A runaway embolism model was used to test the ability of Ochroma and Pseudobombax stems to maintain elevated transpiration rates during the higher evaporative demand of the dry season. The percent loss of leaf area predicted by the runaway embolism model for stems of Pseudobombax ranged from 5 to 30%, not enough to explain the deciduous phenology of this tree species without analysis of root resistance or leaf and petiole vulnerability to embolism. 相似文献

Seedlings of Eucalyptus globulus Labill subsp. globulus grown in soil in pots in the greenhouse grew faster than seedlings of E. globulus subsp. bicostata, and responded better to added nutrients and water. However, water stress caused a greater reduction in the growth of shoots and roots, and in the root/shoot ratios of fertilized seedlings of subsp. globulus than in those of bicostata. More leaf surface wax was produced by seedlings grown in the presence of fertilizer and an adequate supply of water than by seedlings subjected to nutrient or water stress. Despite larger amounts of leaf surface wax, seedlings of subsp. bicostata had higher epidermal conductances than seedlings of subspecies globulus. However, epidermal conductances were reduced more by water stress and by fertilization in seedlings of subsp. bicostata than in subsp. globulus. Tissue osmotic potentials at full and zero turgor were reduced by water stress only in seedlings of subsp. bicostata and were increased by fertilizer only in seedlings of subsp. globulus. The results indicate that although seedlings of subsp. globulus have inherently higher growth rates, seedlings of subsp. bicostata are better adapted to drought. 相似文献

Root and hypocotyl elongation, water status and solute accumulation were studied in osmotically stressed seedlings of the tropical tree, Colophospermum mopane (Kirk ex Benth.) Kirk ex J. Léonard, which grows in hot arid areas of southern and central Africa. Seeds were imbibed for 24 h and then subjected to a polyethylene-glycol-generated osmotic stress of -0.03 (control), -0.2, -0.8, -1.6 or -2.0 MPa for 60 h. Seedlings subjected to moderate water stress (-0.2 MPa) had higher root growth rates (2.41 +/- 0.24 mm h(-1)), greater final root lengths (111 +/- 3.8 mm) and longer cells immediately behind the root elongation zone than control seedlings (1.70 +/- 0.15 mm h(-1) and 93 +/- 3.9 mm, respectively). Root lengths of seedlings in the -0.8 and -1.6 MPa treatments were similar to those of control seedlings, whereas the -2.0 MPa seedlings had significantly shorter roots. Both root and hypocotyl tissues exhibited considerable osmotic adjustment to the external water potential treatments. Seedlings in the -0.03, -0.2, and -0.8 MPa treatments had similar cell turgor pressures (0.69 +/- 0.10, 0.68 +/- 0.07 and 0.57 +/- 0.04 MPa, respectively), whereas the -2.0 MPa treatment lowered cell turgor pressure to 0.17 +/- 0.04 MPa. Root vacuolar osmotic pressures were generally similar to sap osmotic pressures, indicating that the increased root elongation observed in moderately water-stressed seedlings was not caused by increased turgor pressure difference. Neutral-fraction solute concentrations, including the osmoticum pinitol, increased approximately two-fold in root sap in response to a low external water potential. In hypocotyl sap of seedlings in the -2.0 MPa treatment, pinitol more than doubled, sucrose increased from about 2 to 75 mol m(-3) but glucose and fructose remained unchanged and, as a result, total sugars increased only slightly. The benefits of rapid early root elongation and osmoticum accumulation under conditions of water stress are discussed in relation to seedling establishment. 相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the potential for modifying drought tolerance of Japanese cypress ( Chamaecyparis obtusa Endl.) and Japanese red pine ( Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.). Three-year-old seedlings were controlled for five-months at three different soil water potentials ({ie73-1}).
Japanese cypress exposed to high {ie73-2} was able to maintain higher photosynthesis (Ph n), transpiration (Tr) and stomatal conductance to H 2O (gH 2O) in comparison to low {ie73-3} pretreatments, however, there was no significant difference in Ph n for Japanese red pine. Soil water potential at the threshold from the maximum to limited Ph n was higher in high {ie73-4} pretreatments than in low {ie73-5} pretreatments. Net photosynthesis, Tr and gH 2O decreased more rapidly in high {ie73-6} pretreatments than in low {ie73-7} pretreatments. Transpiration decreased more significantly
than Ph n, thus, resulted in increased water use efficiency. All these factors are likely to result in significant improvements in
the drought tolerance. Japanese red pine seems more drought-tolerant than Japanese cypress. Japanese cypress is suitable to
soil of −0.05 MPa water potential, and Japanese red pine is suitable to −0.16 MPa and even dryer soils. 相似文献

Tolerance of bareroot and container-grown seedlings of black spruce ( Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), jack pine ( Pinus banksiana Lamb.), and eastern white pine ( Pinus strobus L.) to competition from herbaceous vegetation was examined in the first five years after planting on a site in the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence forest of Ontario, Canada. Shoot and root morphological characteristics of various stocktypes were measured before planting and correlated with 5-year survival and growth following control and no control of herbaceous vegetation. For black spruce and jack pine, medium-sized bareroot stocktypes had greater relative 5-year stem volume growth in the presence of herbaceous vegetation than did container stock of either species or large bareroot stock of spruce. Relative volume growth was measured as the ratio of the cumulative stem volume increment in the presence of vegetation (Veg) to that in the absence of vegetation (NoVeg), i.e., the Veg:NoVeg ratio. In white pine, the Veg:NoVeg ratio of volume increment of medium container and large bareroot stocktypes exceeded that of small container and medium bareroot stocktypes. In jack pine, root collar diameter at planting and number of first-order lateral roots were positively correlated with 5-year Veg:NoVeg ratio of volume increment. In white pine, the Veg:NoVeg ratio was also positively correlated with root collar diameter at planting and with root volume. In black spruce, the ratio was not related to pre-plant morphology. Thus, for white pine and jack pine, certain pre-plant morphological features may be useful in forecasting the relative ability of different stocktypes to grow under herbaceous competition conditions in the field. 相似文献
