In an attempt to improve the selectivity and engineering performances of generic penaeid trawls, three established and one novel spreading‐mechanism configurations were assessed: otter boards attached (1) with and (2) without 3.15‐m sweeps to a 7.35‐m headline trawl, and a beam rigged directly to a 9.19‐m trawl (3) with and (4) without a horizontal wire and plastic streamers. Despite more surface area (7.5 vs 6.0 m2), both beam‐trawl configurations had significantly lower drag than the otter trawls (≤30%). When catches were standardised to per ha, the otter trawl with sweeps retained significantly more (1.3–2.4 times) school prawns, Metapenaeus macleayi (Haswell), than the other three configurations. Within systems, removing sweeps or adding a horizontal wire significantly reduced the unwanted catches of a key teleost (southern herring, Herklotsichthys castelnaui Ogilby) by 41 and 48%. The results illustrate the utility of simple anterior modifications for independently addressing penaeid‐trawling environmental issues.  相似文献

Penaeid trawling is among the world's least selective fishing methods; a characteristic that has evoked spatial closures being implemented in some fisheries if certain bycatch limits are exceeded. For decades, considerable work has been done to develop modifications to penaeid trawls that reduce unwanted bycatches, with most focussed at the posterior section (i.e. codend). More recently, efforts have examined ways to prevent bycatch entry into trawls entirely—via modifications to anterior components. This study assessed the utility of proactively lowering the headlines of Australian penaeid trawls, using clips at the otter boards, to 68% and 54% of their conventional height, and demonstrated mean total bycatch reductions (by weight) of 69% and 79%, respectively, with no effects on the targeted Metapenaeus macleayi (Haswell). The results provide insights into the location and behaviour of various species in the water column preceding capture, and support a simple and easy method for regional fishers to use in situ to avoid excessive bycatch and associated fishing closures. More broadly, the data support ongoing efforts in other penaeid‐trawl fisheries to reduce bycatches via similar, rapid adjustments to anterior components, depending on species‐specific behaviours during capture.  相似文献

为满足渔业现代化的发展需求,渔具的改良是其不可或缺的一部分,而网板是提供拖网网衣水平张力主要属具。采用矩形曲面网板有利于提高网板的升力系数和升阻比,而网板开缝有利于减小网板的背面涡流,增加网板的水动力性能,提高网板操作稳定性。为研究小型拖网渔船网板的水动力性能,通过数值模拟的方法,在其他参数一定的情况下,采用控制变量法控制双开缝矩形曲面网板的速度、开缝尺寸以及展弦比等参数的单一变化,研究其对拖网网板水动力性能的影响规律。数值计算结果表明:该网板升力系数和升阻比随冲角的增大呈先增后减的趋势,最佳升阻比出现在冲角为10°左右的时候;速度对网板水动力性能无显著影响;升力系数随开缝尺寸的增加总体呈上升趋势,当开缝尺寸大于50 mm时,升力系数无显著变化,升阻比随开缝尺寸增大总体呈先增后减的趋势;不同展弦比的网板在升力系数达到最大时对应的最佳冲角随展弦比的增加而逐渐减小;同时,升力系数峰值随展弦比的增加呈先增后减的趋势,当展弦比为0.6左右时,升力系数的峰值达到最大。研究结果可为同类型的小型拖网渔船拖网网板的结构优化设计提供更加可靠的参考。  相似文献

The hydrodynamic performance of the rectangular V-type otter board is studied by two kinds of numerical simulation methods. The model tests are conducted in the flume tank as well as a comparison to the numerical results. It is found that the CFX analysis is better at simulating the forces, especially for predicting the maximum lift coefficient and the maximum lift-drag ratio. On the other hand the FLUENT analysis is better at simulating the velocity field. The full-scale otter board is then studied by means of CFX simulation to investigate their hydrodynamic performance. The results show that the otter board will be optimized when the aspect ratio is set to 0.490 with a dihedral angle (Г) of 17°. It is confirmed that the numerical simulation is a powerful tool in studying the hydrodynamic characteristics of the otter board and is useful in designing and optimizing otter boards.  相似文献

采用正交优选法来考察网板板面折角、展弦比以及后退角对立式V型曲面网板水动力性能的影响。试验结果证明影响网板水动力性能的最重要的因素是网板板面折角,其次是展弦比和后退角。当网板的板面曲率为14%、板面折角为12°、展弦比为1.60、后退角为10°时,网板具有较高的水动力性能。当冲角为25°和28°时,网板的升力系数均为1.68。另外,通过对优选网板添加模拟海底的试验证明,网板在底层作业时,其临界冲角从28°减小为25°;在常用工作冲角范围内,网板在底层时的扩张性能要高于中层,同时,网板的升阻比也略有上升,并能在较宽的冲角范围内持续保持较高的扩张性能。  相似文献

1. The distribution of effort for the most frequently used mobile demersal gears in the Irish Sea was examined and their potential to disturb different benthic communities calculated. Fishing effort data, expressed as the number of days fished, was collated for all fleets operating in the Irish Sea in 1994. For each gear, the percentage of the seabed swept by those parts of the gear that penetrate the seabed was calculated. 2. For all gears, the majority of fishing effort was concentrated in the northern Irish Sea. Effort was concentrated in three main locations: on the muddy sediments between Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man (otter and Nephrops trawling); off the north Wales, Lancashire and Cumbrian coast (beam trawling); the area surrounding the Isle of Man (scallop dredging). 3. In some areas, e.g. between Anglesey and the Isle of Man, the use of scallop dredges and beam trawls was coincident. A comparative experimental study revealed that scallop dredges caught much less by-catch than beam trawls. Multivariate analysis revealed that both gears modified the benthic community in a similar manner, causing a reduction in the abundance of most epifaunal species. 4. Although beam trawling disturbed the greatest area of seabed in 1994, the majority of effort occurred on grounds which supported communities that are exposed to high levels of natural disturbance. Scallop dredging, Nephrops and otter trawling were concentrated in areas that either have long-lived or poorly studied communities. The latter highlights the need for more detailed knowledge of the distribution of sublittoral communities that are vulnerable to fishing disturbance. ©British Crown Copyright 1996.  相似文献

One quarter of marine fish production is caught with bottom trawls and dredges on continental shelves around the world. Towed bottom‐fishing gears typically kill 20–50 per cent of the benthic invertebrates in their path, depending on gear type, substrate and vulnerability of particular taxa. Particularly vulnerable are epifaunal species, which stabilize the sediment and provide habitat for benthic invertebrates. To identify the habitats, fisheries or target species most likely to be affected, we review evidence of the indirect effects of bottom fishing on fish production. Recent studies have found differences in the diets of certain species in relation to bottom fishing intensity, thereby linking demersal fish to their benthic habitats at spatial scales of ~10 km. Bottom fishing affects diet composition and prey quality rather than the amount of prey consumed; scavenging of discarded by‐catch makes only a small contribution to yearly food intake. Flatfish may benefit from light trawling levels on sandy seabeds, while higher‐intensity trawling on more vulnerable habitats has a negative effect. Models suggest that reduction in the carrying capacity of habitats by bottom fishing could lead to lower equilibrium yield and a lower level of fishing mortality to obtain maximum yield. Trawling effort is patchily distributed – small fractions of fishing grounds are heavily fished, while large fractions are lightly fished or unfished. This patchiness, coupled with the foraging behaviour of demersal fish, may mitigate the indirect effects of bottom fishing on fish productivity. Cuttlefish are currently the highest yielding cephalopod group harvested in the north‐east Atlantic. English Channel cuttlefish show seasonal migrations to and from deep offshore wintering grounds, which results in a large number of smaller cuttlefish within the offshore stocks, some of which are caught by trawlers. Discarding small cuttlefish from trawls may give them the opportunity to migrate inshore and spawn, but only if they survive. This study examined survival rates of small (<15‐cm dorsal mantle length) cuttlefish caught on board a commercial beam trawler. Overall, 31% of the small cuttlefish caught remained alive by the time they reached the sorting table (immediate survival rate). This survival rate dropped to 16% after specimens were subsequently held in an on‐board aquarium system for up to 72 h (short‐term survival rate). Measures that reduce the capture of small cuttlefish in the first place and/or increase their survival could potentially benefit the stocks.  相似文献

The relative contribution of particulate organic matters (POMs) in water column and sediment as a food source for the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, was studied using carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic method (δ13C and δ15N) in a tidal flat at Seaside Park, Yokohama, Japan. Comparisons of δ13C and δ15N among R. philippinarum and POMs in surface water, bottom water, and sediment surface indicated that R. philippinarum larger than 5 mm shell length (SL) mainly assimilated benthic POM, and individuals smaller than 5 mm SL assimilated benthic and pelagic POM. Continuous measurements of chlorophyll concentrations in the bottom water revealed tide-driven resuspension of the benthic phytopigments. R. philippinarum showed differences in δ13C and δ15N along an inshore–offshore transect, indicating small-scale spatial differences in POM provision in the tidal flat. These findings suggest that POM in the bottom water, supposedly inhaled by R. philippinarum, is a mixture of a larger proportion of resuspended benthic POM and a smaller proportion of pelagic POM, and that the mixing ratio of the POMs may be affected by the hydrodynamics of flooding water associated with tidal flat topography.  相似文献

Abstract The relative efficiencies and selectivities of conventional and modified codends were examined in a demersal trawl fishery targeting several species, including eastern king prawns, Penaeus plebejus (Hess), whiting, Sillago spp. and cephalopods. The modifications to codends included: (i) reducing the circumference; (ii) increasing the mesh size in conventional diamond‐mesh designs; and (iii) orientating meshes on the bar so that they were square shaped. The codends were tested against a fine‐meshed control in paired comparisons onboard three commercial trawlers. The conventional codend comprised 41‐mm diamond‐shaped mesh attached to an anterior extension section at a ratio of 150 to 100 meshes and was demonstrated to be non‐selective for the targeted species. Reducing codend circumference to 100 meshes and increasing the size of mesh to 45 mm both improved selection for eastern king prawns, but the lateral mesh openings were estimated to be insufficient to allow juveniles of the other key species to escape. By contrast, codends made from 35‐ and 41‐mm mesh hung on the bar improved the size selection for eastern king prawns and selected stout whiting, Sillago robusta (Stead) (the smallest commercial‐sized fish) across narrow selection ranges and at 50% sizes of retention (L50s) that were closely correlated to the transverse morphology of fish and the maximum mesh opening. With the exception of a reduction in catches of octopus, Octopus spp., by the 41‐square codend, there were no other impacts on commercial catches by the square‐mesh designs. It was concluded that diamond‐mesh codends are inappropriate for use throughout this multispecies fishery and that a modified design comprising at least 35‐mm mesh hung on the bar is required to minimise the fishing mortality of unwanted sizes of the key target species. The results are discussed in terms of the utility of these types of modifications for closely regulating selection in penaeid‐shrimp trawls.  相似文献

A field study was carried out to assess the use of the bottom‐feeding grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) within benthic enclosures as a means to reduce the benthic impacts of a net cage fish farm in the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea. Five experimental 1‐m3 net‐cage enclosures were stocked with 12 grey mullets each (fish weights 50, 70 or 144 g). The enclosures had no bottom and the mullets had access to the enclosed organically enriched sediments and to particulate matter (PM) falling from the overlying cages. Sediment traps were used to quantify and qualify the PM falling from the fish farm to the sea floor. Simultaneously, a feeding trial was performed with mullets (50 and 70 g) in experimental tanks. In order to estimate the potential growth rate and to quantify energy and protein requirements, the fish were fed a formulated diet with known composition. After approximately 70 days at sea, mullets in the enclosures had used up all the available food in the sediment and gained up to 0.78 g day?1 fish?1. Applying the values for energy and protein requirements for maintenance and growth derived from the experimental trial, estimates indicated that the grey mullets effectively removed 4.2 g organic carbon, 0.70 g nitrogen and 7.5 mg phosphorus kg?1 mullet m?2 day?1 from the organically enriched sediment. Thus deployment of grey mullets may be an efficient means to improve the quality of sediments below intensive net‐cage fish farms.  相似文献

One of the fundamental aims of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management is to ensure the long‐term sustainability of the fishery by protecting key life‐cycle habitats, such as recruitment areas. In this study, we apply a hurdle Bayesian hierarchical spatio‐temporal model that describes the abundance of European hake (Merluccius merluccius) recruits in the northern continental shelf of the Iberian Peninsula. Our findings clearly show four persistent nurseries, the main one being located along the continental shelf of the Artabrian gulf (off La Coruña). The preferential habitats identified for the hake recruits are areas within a bathymetric range of 120–200 m, with 15–16°C of Sea Surface Temperature, a Chl‐a concentration of 0.8–1.2 mg/m3 and low values of seabed rugosity (unconsolidated substrates). Searching for a compromise with fisheries, we also assess the degree of overlap of the main nursery areas with two fisheries footprints, a local one using Vessel Monitoring System data of trawl fishery of Marín, and a global one using Automatic Identification System data of different type of trawlers (bottom otter, beam and midwater trawls). The two fisheries footprints present different degree of overlapping in distinct areas, highlight the need of specific fleet‐adapted management rules in order to protect juvenile stages. We discuss that understanding the distributional patterns associated with key life stages, such as recruitment, and their interaction with fishing activities, is essential for applying appropriate spatial management measures and improving fishery sustainability.  相似文献

Bottom‐contact fishing gears are globally the most widespread anthropogenic sources of direct disturbance to the seabed and associated biota. Managing these fishing disturbances requires quantification of gear impacts on biota and the rate of recovery following disturbance. We undertook a systematic review and meta‐analysis of 122 experiments on the effects‐of‐bottom fishing to quantify the removal of benthos in the path of the fishing gear and to estimate rates of recovery following disturbance. A gear pass reduced benthic invertebrate abundance by 26% and species richness by 19%. The effect was strongly gear‐specific, with gears that penetrate deeper into the sediment having a significantly larger impact than those that penetrate less. Sediment composition (% mud and presence of biogenic habitat) and the history of fishing disturbance prior to an experimental fishing event were also important predictors of depletion, with communities in areas that were not previously fished, predominantly muddy or biogenic habitats being more strongly affected by fishing. Sessile and low mobility biota with longer life‐spans such as sponges, soft corals and bivalves took much longer to recover after fishing (>3 year) than mobile biota with shorter life‐spans such as polychaetes and malacostracans (<1 year). This meta‐analysis provides insights into the dynamics of recovery. Our estimates of depletion along with estimates of recovery rates and large‐scale, high‐resolution maps of fishing frequency and habitat will support more rigorous assessment of the environmental impacts of bottom‐contact gears, thus supporting better informed choices in trade‐offs between environmental impacts and fish production.  相似文献

Ecosystem-based management (EBM), in the context of fishing, considers impacts on all parts of an exploited marine ecosystem. Understanding the impacts of fishing on habitats is a necessary part of adopting EBM, but multi-scale data that describe the types and distributions of habitats, and the interactions of fishing with them, are typically limited or entirely lacking. An approach developed to address habitat impacts, and applied to all offshore bottom contact fisheries in Australian waters, forms part of a hierarchical risk assessment framework - the Ecological Risk Assessment for the Effects of Fishing (ERAEF). Its progressively quantitative hierarchical approach enables higher-risk interactions to be identified and prioritised in the early and intermediate assessment stages by screening out lower-risk interactions. The approach makes the best use of all available data, but it can also be inferential where data are lacking. At the intermediate level of the ERAEF, a semi-quantitative approach uses a general conceptual model of how fishing impacts on ecological systems, with a focus at the level of regional sub-fisheries defined by fishing method (gear type). A set of quantifiable attributes for habitats are used to describe the ‘susceptibility’ of each habitat to damage that may be caused by specific fishing gears; resilience is generalised as a habitat's inherent ‘productivity’ (ability to recover from damage). In the ERAEF, photographic imagery was used effectively to provide a standardised method to classify habitats, to visualise the attributes assessed, and to communicate with stakeholders. The application of the ERAEF to habitats is illustrated using results from a multi-sector fishery off southern Australia that has five primary sub-fisheries: two bottom trawl (‘otter trawler’ or ‘dragger’), bottom set auto-longline, bottom set gill net, and Danish seine. In the case of the otter trawl sub-fishery, a set of 158 habitat types was considered, of which 46, mostly on the outer continental shelf and slope, were identified as potentially higher risk and deserving management attention. Strengths of the ERAEF approach for benthic habitats include methodological flexibility and wide applicability, and in being interactive and inclusive - bringing stakeholders, scientists and managers together to ‘put habitat on the radar’ and to develop management solutions. Limitations include difficulties in construction and validation of scored attributes and scale dependence. In the context of ecological risk management, this method offers a way to assess risks to marine habitats in a rigorous, transparent, and repeatable manner.  相似文献

Stable isotope analysis was used to determine the sources of dietary nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) for shrimp during the rearing phase in extensive rice‐shrimp ponds in My Xuyen and Gia Rai districts, Vietnam. Farm‐made feed was added as a food source in shrimp ponds in My Xuyen district, and based on stable isotope analyses, was generally a poor dietary source. The commercial formulated feed used in Gia Rai also appeared to contribute little directly to the nutritional needs of the shrimp. In contrast, the natural biota in all ponds appeared to contribute substantially. In particular, biota from beam trawls and benthic organic matter were the most likely sources of nutrition in My Xuyen ponds, while benthic organic matter was the main source in Gia Rai ponds. δ15N ratios in the natural biota in My Xuyen farms decreased over the growing season, suggesting increased N fixation in the case of the benthic organic matter reaching values as low as 1‰. This suggests N‐limitation in the ponds and that natural biota become increasingly dependent on N fixed by algae and/or other microorganisms. There is the potential to promote the growth of the plankton and hence, the other natural biota, by the judicious addition of fertilizer.  相似文献

根据虾拖网存在网目偏小,渔获物中经济鱼、虾类幼体和杂物所占比例较大等问题,于2002~2003年对在福建海区生产的网板虾拖网作业的网具进行改革,主要是在网具的后部采用上、下两个囊网。下囊网入口处装配刚性栅隔装置,起鱼、虾分离作用,上囊网采用放大网目尺寸,以达到释放经济鱼、虾类幼体为目的。通过改革试验取得了良好的效果。本文着重论述改革后的渔具特点与渔法。  相似文献
