Beef production characteristics of 254 intensively fed young bulls are described. The results are part of a beef × dairy crossbreeding experiment, where sires of eight European beef and dual-purpose breeds were used on cows of RDM (Danish Red Cattle) and SDM (Black Pied Danish Cattle).Daily gain and feed conversion were influenced by the sire breeds. Charolais, Blonde d'Aquitaine and Simmental crosses showed the highest daily gain, followed by Romagnola, Danish Red and White, Chianina, Limousin and Hereford crosses.Carcass composition and carcass conformation were strongly influenced by sire breed with Blonde d'Aquitaine and Limousin crosses producing the most valuable carcasses followed by Chianina, Charolais, Romagnola, Simmental, Danish Red and White and Hereford crosses in descending order.The analysis showed a sire breed × weight/age interaction in carcass composition traits, due to sire breed differences in maturity. That demonstrates the importance of serial slaughtering in breed comparison experiments. Hereford and Limousin produced the earliest maturing crosses and Danish Red and White and Blonde d'Aquitaine the latest maturing crosses.  相似文献

The experimental design and objectives are outlined for a crossbreeding experiment with European beef breeds as sire breeds and RDM (Danish Red), SDM (Black Pied Danish) and Danish Jersey as dam breeds.Results from a calving survey of 1006 single calvings are presented. Gestation length, birth weight and calving performance were strongly influenced by breed of sire, breed of dam and sex of calf. The variation in gestation length seemed to have only a slight effect on birth weight. The variation in birth weight had a strong effect on calving performance.The ranking of the sire breeds in descending order according to the frequency of unasisted calvings (which varied from 70 to 26 percent) was as follows: Hereford, Limousin, Danish Red and White Cattle, Simmental, Blonde d'Aquitaine, Chianina, Charolais and Romagnola.  相似文献

The results presented are part of a beef × dairy cross breeding experiment in which Simmental, Charolais, Danish Red and White Cattle (DRK), Romagnola, Chianina, Hereford, Blonde d'Aquitaine and Limousin bulls are crossbred with cows of Danish Red Cattle (RDM) and Black Pied Danish Cattle (SDM).Young bulls were slaughtered at 300 kg (712 months of age on average), 12 months and 15 months of age. Samples of m. longissimus dorsi and m. semitendinosus from 305 animals were examined by a taste panel, by chemical analysis and measurements of colour, by shear force, and by adhesion measurements.Sire breed had a significant influence on chemical composition and colour in both muscles. Taste panel scores and shear force values showed that all sire breeds gave tender meat in the longissimus dorsi. Significant differences in tenderness between sire breeds were found only for the semitendinosus, where Hereford crossbreeds obtained the lowest scores, and Limousin and Blonde d'Aquitaine crossbreeds the highest. Corresponding differences between sire breeds were found for adhesion value, collagen content and solubility of collagen in semitendinosus.Meat quality differences are discussed in relation to early and late maturing breeds.  相似文献

Milk yield data were collected by weigh-suckle-weigh procedures at approximately 14, 28, 56, 84, 112, 138, 156, 184, and 212 d postpartum for mature Angus, Braunvieh, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Red Poll, Pinzgauer, and Simmental cows over a 4-yr period. Individual cows were fed at one of four energy intake levels. Parameters characterizing lactation curves for 431 lactations from 179 cows were estimated by nonlinear regression. Differences due to breed, level of energy intake, and the two-factor interaction between breed and level of ME allowance for scale and shape parameters of lactation curves and derived estimates for time of peak lactation, yield at time of peak lactation, and for total yield for a 210-d lactation period were evaluated. Breed and energy intake level were significant sources of variation for all traits. Pooled over energy levels, daily yields at time of peak lactation of Braunvieh, Gelbvieh, and Pinzgauer were greater (P less than .05) than those of Angus, Charolais, Hereford, and Limousin. Simmental and Red Poll were intermediate. Total lactation yield of the Braunvieh exceeded (P less than .05) that of all other breeds with the exception of Gelbvieh. Hereford produced less milk than (P less than .05) the other breeds. The response in yields at time of peak lactation as energy allowances increased for Braunvieh, Charolis, Gelbvieh, Limousin, and Pinzgauer cows were linear and resulted in higher yields at this time. Linear increases in total 210-d yield and times of peak lactation were observed for all breeds with the exception of Hereford.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of inbreeding on carcass quality, growth rate, live conformation measures, and calving performance in purebred populations of Charolais, Limousin, Simmental, Hereford, and Angus beef cattle using data from Irish commercial and pedigree herds. Variables analyzed are reflective of commercial farming practices. Inbreeding was included in a linear mixed model as either a class variable or a linear continuous variable. Nonlinear effects were nonsignificant across all traits. Inbred animals had decreased carcass weight and less carcass fat. The effects of inbreeding were more pronounced in the British beef breeds. Effects for carcass weight ranged from -0.87 kg (Charolais) to -1.90 kg (Hereford) per 1% increase in inbreeding. Inbred Charolais and Hereford animals were younger at slaughter by 3 and 5 d, respectively, per percentage of increase in inbreeding, whereas the effect of inbreeding on age at slaughter differed significantly with animal sex in the Limousin and Angus breeds. Inbred Limousin and Angus heifers were younger at slaughter by 5 and 7 d, respectively, per percentage of increase in inbreeding. Continental animals were more affected by inbreeding for live muscling and skeletal conformational measurements than the British breeds; inbred animals were smaller and narrower with poorer developed muscle. Calf inbreeding significantly affected perinatal mortality in Charolais, Simmental, and Hereford animals. The effects were dependent upon dam parity and calf sex; however, where significant, the association was always unfavorable. Dam inbreeding significantly affected perinatal mortality in Limousin and Hereford animals. Effects differed by parity in Limousins. Inbred first-parity Angus dams had a greater incidence of dystocia. Although the effects of inbreeding were some-times significant, they were small and are unlikely to make a large financial effect on commercial beef production in Ireland.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the inbreeding levels and to analyze the pedigree of Irish purebred populations of Charolais, Limousin, Hereford, Angus, and Simmental beef cattle, as well as the Holstein-Friesian dairy breed. Pedigree analyses included quantifying the depth of known pedigree, average generation intervals, effective population size, the effective number of founders, ancestors, and founder genomes, as well as identifying the most influential animals within the current population of each breed. The annual rate of increase in inbreeding over the past decade was 0.13% (P < 0.001) in the Hereford, 0.06% (P < 0.001) in the Simmental, and 0.10% (P < 0.001) in the Holstein-Friesian breeds. Inbreeding in the other breeds remained relatively constant over the past decade. Herefords had the greatest mean inbreeding in 2004, at 2.19%, whereas Charolais had the lowest, at 0.54%. Over half of each purebred population in 2004 was inbred to some degree; the population with the greatest proportion of animals inbred was the Hereford breed (85%). All 6 breeds displayed a generation interval of approximately 6 yr in recent years. In the pure-bred females born in 2004, the 3 most influential animals contributed between 11% (Limousin) and 24% (Hereford) of the genes. Effective population size was estimated for the Hereford, Simmental, and Holstein-Friesian only, and was 64, 127, and 75, respectively. The effective number of founders varied from 55 (Simmental) to 357 (Charolais), whereas the effective number of ancestors varied from 35 (Simmental and Hereford) to 82 (Limousin). Thus, despite the majority of animals being inbred, the inbreeding level across breeds is low but rising at a slow rate in the Hereford, Simmental, and Holstein-Friesian.  相似文献

Birth, weaning, feedlot and carcass traits were evaluated on 1,181 calves sired by Charolais and Limousin bulls out of eight crossbred dam groups (Hereford X Angus, Angus X Hereford, Simmental X Angus, Simmental X Hereford, Brown Swiss X Angus, Brown Swiss X Hereford, Jersey X Angus, Jersey X Hereford). Calves were born in the spring over a 4-yr period during which dams ranged from 3 to 8 yr of age. Charolais-cross calves were 2.7 kg heavier (P less than .01) at birth and had a 9.9% higher (P less than .01) incidence of difficult calvings and 4.6% greater (P less than .05) preweaning death loss than did Limousin crosses. Charolais-sired calves out-gained Limousin-sired calves by 31 g/d (P less than .01) from birth to weaning and were 9 kg heavier (P less than .01) at weaning. After weaning, calves were self-fed a finishing diet and slaughtered as each animal attained an estimated carcass grade of low Choice. Charolais-cross calves gained 60 g/d faster (P less than .01) than Limousin crosses, were fed 6.8 fewer d and were 17.3 kg heavier (P less than .01) at slaughter. Feed efficiency was similar for both sire breeds. On a grade-equivalent basis, Charolais crosses produced 7 kg heavier (P less than .01) carcass and had 22 g more carcass weight per day of age (P less than .01). Charolais crosses had slightly less internal and external fat. Dressing percentage was higher for Limousin cross calves (64.6 vs 63.9%, P less than .01). Longissimus muscle area and carcass cutability were similar for crosses of both sire breeds.  相似文献

Calving records for daughters of 667 Record of Performance tested sires were examined to study factors related to age at first calving. For the 3025 heifers analyzed, mean age (± SD) at first calving was 791.5 ± 161.6 days (26.4 ± 5.4 months). There were significant effects of the breed of sire on age of heifer at first calving. Daughters of Angus sires calved earlier than daughters of Charolais, Hereford, Limousin, and Simmental sires. Mean ages at first calving for daughters of Hereford, Limousin, and Simmental bulls were significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with the sire's end-of-test age-adjusted scrotal circumference, but these correlations were not significant when farm effects were controlled. It appears that unknown herd level factors are more important in determining age at first calving in Ontario herds than using early maturing sires as determined by scrotal circumference measurements.  相似文献

The maternal values of various maternal dairy, local and beef breeds used in beef crossing are analyzed and compared on field progeny test data, including 374 Limousin, 94 Blond d'Aquitaine and 256 Charolais sires with, respectively: 16 765, 4 696 and 12 824 pure and cross-bred offsprings.The traits studied were female calving difficulty score and frequency, birth and 75-day weight, conformation score of calves and the product of the last two variables. Additive effects of the different dam breeds (13, 11 and 13 breeds, respectively mated to Limousin, Blond d'Aquitaine and Charolais sires) were estimated separately for each sire breed by the least squares method (taking into account sex and calving parity effects) and then expressed as deviations from the French Friesian estimate.On score and frequency of calving difficulties, dam breeds were classed in the following groups (from best to worst): (1) Aubrac, Tarentaise; (2) Salers, Gasconne, Abondance, Montbéliarde; (3) Charolaise, Normande, Brune des Alpes, Limousine; (4) Frisonne, Blonde d'Aquitaine, Pie-Rouge de l'Est. Rating on 75-day weight and postnatal growth showed a superiority of dairy breeds over beef and local breeds which is more pronounced when the potential growth of the sire breed is high. The conformation score clearly distinguishes beef, dual-purpose, dairy and local breeds in decreasing order of merit while this ranking remains unchanged for beef synthetic value when dam breeds are crossed with Limousin and Blond d'Aquitaine sires. Large-size dairy breeds such as Pie-Rouge de l'Est, Brune des Alpes and Normande crossed with Charolais permit a better expression of potential growth in the calves.These results show that the utilization of suckling dam breeds in crossing with paternal beef breeds involves complementarity between maternal and paternal components in order to obtain optimum balance between size, growth traits (growth potential, milk production) and muscular conformation.  相似文献

Retained heterosis in F2 cows nursing F3 progeny was evaluated in 3-, 4-, and greater than or equal to 5-yr-old cows. Traits evaluated included milk yield at three stages of lactation and 200-d weight of progeny. Breed effects were evaluated in the nine parental breeds (Red Poll [R], Hereford [H], Angus [A], Limousin [L], Braunvieh [B], Pinzgauer [P], Gelbvieh [G], Simmental [S], and Charolais [C]) that contributed to the three composite populations (MARC I = 1/4 B, 1/4 C, 1/4 L, 1/8 H, 1/8 A; MARC II = 1/4 G, 1/4 S, 1/4 H, 1/4 A; and MARC III = 1/4 R, 1/4 P, 1/4 H, 1/4 A). Breed effects were significant for 12-h milk yield, estimated 200-d milk yield, and 200-d weight of progeny. Herefords were lowest (P less than .05) for 12-h milk yield and estimated 200-d milk yield, and Braunvieh produced significantly more milk than all breed groups except Pinzgauer and Simmental, for which the difference approached significance. The correlation among breed group means (nine parental breeds and three composites) for 12-h milk yield with 200-d weight of progeny was .91. When 200-d weight was adjusted to a common estimated 200-d milk yield, Hereford, Angus, Red Poll, and Limousin did not differ (P greater than .05); all were significantly lighter than Braunvieh, Pinzgauer, Gelbvieh, Simmental, and Charolais, which did not differ (P greater than .05) from each other.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Weaning weights of 442 beef calves (223 male and 219 female), born between 1997 and 2004 from cows of nine breeds (Hungarian Fleckvieh, Hereford, Aberdeen Angus, Red Angus, Lincoln Red, Charolais, Limousin, Blonde d' Aquitaine and Shaver) and maintained in the same conditions on peat-bog soil pasture at Keszthely, were evaluated. The effect of breed, age of dam, year/season of birth and sex of calf on the 205-day weaning weight was computed by analysis of variance (GLM). Overall mean of the 205-day weaning weight of all calves was 193 kg. The contribution to the total phenotypic variance of the 205-day weaning weight was: 18.60% by breed, 2.79% by age of dam, 43.23% by birth year, 3.95% by birth season and 31.43% by sex of calf. The evaluated factors had a significant (P < 0.05) effect on 205-day weight. Mean values by breeds were 198, 163, 206, 205, 182, 204, 181, 189 and 204 kg, respectively. According to the age of the dam, the weaning weight increased up to 5 years and after the maximum (205 kg) decreased. The minimum values were found in the group of 2- (178 kg) and 12-year-old (174 kg) cows. With respect to birth year, the highest weaning weight (238 kg) was observed in 2002 and the lowest (151 kg) in 1999. For birth season, winter, spring, summer and autumn, the 205-day weaning weight was 183, 196, 203 and 190 kg, respectively. Male calves reached 202 kg and female calves 185 kg mean value of the adjusted weaning weight.  相似文献

Data for gestation length, birth weight, calving difficulty (percent assisted) and survival from birth to weaning were analyzed from 4,639 calves by 290 sires of 14 Bos taurus breeds (Hereford, Angus, Jersey, South Devon, Limousin, Simmental, Charolais, Red Poll, Brown Swiss, Gelbvieh, Maine Anjou, Chianina, Pinzgauer and Tarentaise) mated to Hereford and Angus cows. The calves were produced over a 7-yr period in a germ plasm evaluation program. Variance components were estimated for breed of sire (sigma 2b), sire within breed of sire (sigma 2s) and progeny within sire (sigma 2w) random effects. Estimates of sigma 2b and sigma 2s direct genetic variance were similar for gestation length and calf survival. Estimates of sigma 2b genetic variance were greater than for sigma 2s for birth weight and calving difficulty. Estimates of total heritability [h2t = 4(sigma 2b + sigma 2s)/(4 sigma 2b + sigma 2s + sigma 2w)] and within-breed heritability (h2w = 4 sigma 2s/sigma 2s + sigma 2w) indicated that gestation length (h2t = .77, h2w = 64) and birth weight (h2t = .79, h2w = .46) are under a high degree of direct genetic control, calving difficulty (h2t = .42, h2w = .21) is under a moderate degree of direct genetic control and calf survival (h2t = .11, h2w = .07) is under a low degree of direct genetic control. Breed means and differences for weight (CW, n = 19,851), height (CH, n = 14,553), and condition scores (CS, n = 19,536) recorded in four seasons per year were evaluated for 881 cows ranging from 2 to 7 yr of age from Cycle I of the Germplasm Evaluation Program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. Cows were straightbred Herefords and Angus and topcrosses from mating of Hereford, Angus, South Devon, Jersey, Simmental, Limousin, and Charolais sires to Hereford and Angus dams. The model included cow age, season of measurement, and their interactions, with year of birth, pregnancy-lactation (PL) code, and breed group as fixed effects for CW and CS. Analyses of weight adjusted for condition score included CS as covariate. Model for CH excluded PL. Random effects were additive genetic and permanent environmental effects. Data were analyzed by REML. Differences due to breeds of sire were significant for all traits. Differences were generally maintained across ages, with few interchanges in ranking through maturity. Rankings were in the following order: Jersey (lightest and shortest), Hereford-Angus (and reciprocal), Limousin, South Devon, Simmental, and Charolais (heaviest and tallest). The only exception was that Limousin-sired cows were heavier than South Devon-sired cows after 5 yr of age. Cows sired by breeds of British origin tended to be lighter than breeds of continental European origin. Adjustment for condition score changed estimates of breed differences. Rankings of breed groups, however, were generally the same for actual weight and weight adjusted for condition score. Results indicated that the part of the differences in weight due to differences in condition were of small magnitude. Differences tended to increase when adjusted for condition score, especially in contrasts of continental vs British breeds. Reproductive data were collected on 4,595 cow exposures and subsequent calvings over four generations in a rotational crossbreeding study involving Angus, Brahman, Charolais and Hereford breeds. Direct and maternal additive (Ig and Mg) and nonadditive (Ih and Mh) genetic effects were estimated for calving rate, calf survival, weaning rate, calving assistance and calf birth date. Genetic effects were estimated by regressing individual animal response on the proportion of genes from breed of origin and gene combinations expected for the four breeds in offspring and in dams. Breed direct and maternal additive and nonadditive genetic effects were expressed as a deviation from the least squares mean. Brahman Ig effects decreased calving and weaning rate (-9.5 +/- 4.0 and -11.8 +/- 4.4%) but Mh effects for weaning rate that included Brahman were positive, ranging from 16.5 +/- 6.7% for Angus-Brahman to 27.8 +/- 6.9% for Brahman-Hereford. The Brahman Ig effect delayed calf birth date (9.8 +/- 2.1 d; P less than .01), whereas Angus and Hereford Ig effects influenced earlier calf birth dates (-4.3 +/- 1.9 and -4.1 +/- 1.9 d; P less than .05). Brahman combination Mh effects also influenced earlier calf birth dates (P less than .01). The Charolais Ig effect for calving assistance was positive (4.3 +/- 1.9%; P less than .05), whereas Angus-Brahman and Brahman-Charolais Mh effects for calving assistance were negative (-6.5 +/- 3.2 and -7.0 +/- 3.2%; P less than .05) and more desirable. Predicted reproductive traits for rotational mating systems were intermediate between predicted reproductive traits for two- and three-breed terminal crosses. Predicted calving and weaning rates were maximized when Brahaman first-cross and Charolais-Hereford cows were used in three-breed cross mating systems.  相似文献

Measurements were taken on 216 cows with 469 calvings for weight at weaning, condition at weaning, milk yield, milk fat percentage, milk lactose percentage, milk protein percentage, dry period feed intake, lactation period feed intake, total feed intake, first-service pregnancy rate, pregnancy rate, and days to pregnancy. Measurements were also taken on 183 heifers for first-service pregnancy rate, days to pregnancy, and age at first calving. The data spanned the years 1980 to 1988; animals belonged to one of four breeding systems: Hereford, small rotation (Angus, Gelbvieh, Pinzgauer, Tarentaise), large rotation (Charolais, Maine Anjou, Simmental), and Angus-large rotation (cows with Angus sires and large-rotation dams). Maine Anjou-sired cows had lower annual feed intake and Charolais-sired heifers lower first-service pregnancy rate than the other large-rotation breeds. Gelbvieh-sired cows had lower milk lactose and protein percentages than the other small-rotation breeds. Within breeding system neither cow weight nor milk yield were significantly associated with reproductive traits of cows. No differences among breeding systems in associations between feed intakes and weights or milk yields were detected.  相似文献

Data consisting of 948 calf records collected from 1978 to 1982 were analyzed to determine the effects of breeding methods used to improve commercial herds genetically on birth and weaning traits. Four distinct groups were used in the project: Group 1 (G1), an unselected, random mating Hereford control line; Group 2 (G2), a Hereford group using sires selected for yearling growth; Group 3 (G3), a rotational cross with Angus, Hereford, Charolais and Simmental breeds; and Group 4 (G4), a rotational cross with Angus, Hereford, Simmental and Holstein-Friesian breeds. Traits analyzed were birth weight (BW), calving difficulty (CD), percent assisted births (%AB), percent born alive (%BL), preweaning average daily gain (PWDG), relative growth rate (RGR), weaning weight (WWT) and percent weaned (%WND). The use of high yearling weight sires in G2 increased calf size (P less than .01) at birth and weaning by 8.9 and 28.1 kg, respectively, along with increased CD (P less than .01). Use of rotational crossbreeding systems increased calf size and growth from birth to weaning (P less than .01), but decreased CD and %AB (P less than .01) by .17 units and 13.5%, respectively. Including Holstein-Friesian in G4 resulted in further increases in preweaning growth (P less than .01) and calving ease was improved without affecting BWT compared with G3.  相似文献

Genetic improvement in reproductive efficiency through selection is difficult because many reproductive traits are binomial and have low heritabilities. Before genetic markers can be generated for fertility in cows, greater characterization of reproductive phenotypes is needed to understand the components of the trait. The current study tested the hypotheses that: 1) breeds vary in postpartum interval to estrus (PPIE) and estrous cycle length, 2) a longer estrous cycle immediately before breeding increased pregnancy rates, and 3) a greater number of cycles before breeding increased conception rates. The postpartum interval to estrus, estrous cycle length, and number of cycles before breeding were examined in F1 cows (n = 519) obtained from mating Hereford, Angus, and MARC III cows to Hereford, Angus, Simmental, Limousin, Charolais, Gelbvieh, and Red Angus sires. Cows were classified as having 0, 1, 2, or 3 observed estrous cycles before breeding. All traits analyzed were adjusted to constant BCS. Sire breed of the cow influenced length of the PPIE and number of cycles before the start of breeding (P <0.001). Simmental-sired cows had the shortest PPIE and greatest number of cycles before breeding, whereas Limousin-sired cows had the longest PPIE and least number of cycles before breeding. Cows with a greater number of cycles before breeding did not have greater conception rates than cows that had not exhibited standing estrus before breeding (P = 0.87). In cows that cycled before breeding, the length of the estrous cycle immediately before breeding was influenced by dam breed and BCS (P <0.01). Cows out of Hereford dams had shorter estrous cycles than cows out of MARC III or Angus dams, and estrous cycle length increased as BCS increased. Conception rate decreased as length of the estrous cycle immediately before breeding increased (P = 0.05, -2.2% per d of cycle length). Therefore, previously anestrous cows were just as likely to conceive as cows that had cycled before breeding, and an increased number of observed estrous cycles before breeding did not increase conception rates. There may be an influence of the length of estrous cycle immediately before breeding on conception rates, possibly because a longer estrous cycle results in a persistent follicle with greater potential for a lower quality oocyte. Breed differences in PPIE and estrous cycle length suggest that there are genetic components to these traits.  相似文献

Two previously identified single-nucleotide polymorphism markers located within the micromolar calcium-activated neutral protease gene (CAPN1) were evaluated for their association with variation in meat tenderness using one commercial sample of Simmental x Angus crossbred calves and one multibreed, crossbred research herd. The commercial sample included 362 animals sired by 23 registered Simmental bulls bred to unregistered Angus cows and represented current industry animals in which to test the predictive merit of the markers. The second sample was a research herd including 564 steers from the Germplasm Evaluation Cycle VII population at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, produced with semen from popular sires of the seven Bos taurus beef breeds with the most registrations in the United States (Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Red Angus, and Simmental) on Angus, Hereford, and MARC III cows. These animals form a relatively outbred population that constituted a stringent test of the predictive merit of the genetic markers, although small groups were half-sibs. Warner-Bratzler shear force measurements were used to determine tenderness phenotypes for all animals. The populations were genotyped for two markers that predict variation at amino acid positions 316 and 530 of the mu-calpain polypeptide, produced by the CAPN1 gene. Minor allele frequencies for markers 316 and 530 in the commercial sample were 0.17 and 0.37, respectively, and in the Cycle VII animals, were 0.20 and 0.28, respectively. Both markers showed association with shear force in the commercial sample (P = 0.04) and the Cycle VII population (P = 0.02), supporting the hypothesis that they represent potential markers to aid selection for improved meat tenderness in commercial populations of beef cattle in the United States.  相似文献

Data from 498 cows of 15 breed-types produced in a five-breed diallel (reciprocals pooled) including Angus, Brahman, Hereford, Holstein and Jersey were analyzed for differences in productive longevity, mean life span and reasons for removal from the herd over approximately 14 yr. The only culling related to production was of cows that did not give birth to at least one live calf every 24 mo. Otherwise, cows were only removed when they appeared to be incapable of weaning another live calf. The average age at removal, estimated from linear regression, was 3,470 d, with values ranging from 2,174 d (Jersey) to 4,087 d (Angus-Brahman). Longevity of crossbred cows was greater than that of purebred cows (P less than .001). Purebred cows usually had higher initial rates of removal than crossbred cows. Estimates of mean longevity from the nonlinear regression resembled the results of the linear regression analysis; mean life spans ranged from 6.2 yr (Jersey) to 14.6 yr (Angus-Brahman). The major reason for removal of Brahman and Brahman-cross cows was for reproductive reasons. Angus and Angus-cross cows were culled more frequently for structural unsoundness; Hereford cows had a higher incidence of cancer eye, calving difficulty and mammary problems; cows with 100% dairy breeding had exceptionally high susceptibility to diseases and mineral imbalance.  相似文献

为了研究不同肉牛品种杂交改良西门塔尔杂种牛的效果,筛选出产肉量高、肉质好、抗逆性强的品种杂交组合,为大规模开展杂交提供依据,试验采用红安格斯、利木赞、夏洛莱(法系)、德国黄牛4个品种牛,分别杂交西门塔尔杂种母牛,产犊后从每个杂交组合中选择11头断奶小公牛,在相同饲养管理条件下持续育肥至18月龄,并进行屠宰和肉质评定。结果表明:红安西杂组合杂交效果最好,其次是利西杂及夏西杂,德黄西杂组合杂交效果较差。说明在生产实际中,如果采用断奶小公牛持续育肥至18月龄时出栏、屠宰,应优先选择红安格斯×西门塔尔杂交组合。  相似文献
