In the Research News article "Extreme ultraviolet satellites open new view of the sky" by Donald Goldsmith (14 Apr., p. 202), astronomer Stuart Bowyer was incorrectly identified as the director of the University of California, Berkeley's Center for Extreme Ultraviolet Astronomy. Bowyer was the founding director of the center and was succeeded by Roger Malina, who became acting director in 1994 and is now director. Malina is, with Bowyer, a principal investigator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's EUVE (Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer) mission.

Erratum

In the issue of 22 June, in the News and Comment article, "Congress says bioassay reports are stalled" (p. 1288), Philippe Shubik is identified as the "former director" of the University of Nebraska's Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer. Shubik is in fact on leave from that post until 1 July 1980. Norman Cromwell has been named acting director while Shubik is on leave.     

Marihuana: A Conversation with NIDA's Robert L. DuPont

Robert L. DuPont, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), made headlines recently when he became one of the first Administration officials publicly to recommend a liberalization of marihuana laws. The occasion was a press conference accompanying the release of Marihuana and Health, NIDA's fifth annual report to the Congress on marihuana research. Recently, Science talked with DuPont and asked him to elaborate on those views. DuPont, a 40-year-old Harvard M.D., served as Director of the District of Columbia's Narcotics Treatment Administration from 1970 to 1973, where he conducted a comprehensive program for treatment of heroin addiction. In June 1973, Richard Nixon appointed him director of the White House Special Action Office for Drug Abuse Prevention. He held that position until the office was terminated on 30 June 1975. He has been director of NIDA since September 1973.

Correction

Because a line was inadvertently omitted, the article "Reagan reforms create upheaval at NIOSH" (News and Comment, 9 Oct., p. 166) stated on p. 168 that Donald Millar, new director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), believes that NIOSH should be separated from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. The sentence should have read, "Millar says one of the things he learned as acting director [of NIOSH] is that NIOSH should be moved to Atlanta or that its ties to CDC should be severed." Millar, who wants strengthened ties between NIOSH and CDC, favors the former alternative.

独立董事制度有效性与控股股东关联交易——来自深交所制造业上市公司的经验数据

基于2002～2008年深交所制造业上市公司的证据,本文以控股股东与上市公司之间的关联交易作为研究对象,结合独立董事所占比例、专业性和薪酬等基本特征,考察了独立董事能否有效发挥其监督职能。研究发现:独立董事的专业性对控股股东与上市公司的关联交易有显著的抑制作用,独立董事薪酬与控股股东与上市公司关联交易的频率显著正相关,独立董事的比例对控股股东与上市公司关联交易没有显著影响。这些结论有助于我们从新的视角去改进我国上市公司独立董事制度以提高其监督制约控股股东的职能。     

Correction

It has been called to our attention that our announcement of the granting of the Third Intermediate Sugar Research Foundation Award to Leslie F. Wiggins (Science, May 14, p. 502) was incorrect in several respects. The Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture, mentioned in the item as being located in Kingston, Jamaica, and as having been "recently created," is actually located in Trinidad, B.W.I., and has been in existence for 27 years. We learn that it was founded as the West Indian Agricultural College in 1921 and that its name was changed to its present one in 1924. It was also stated in the announcement that Dr. Wiggins had been appointed research director at the College. His appointment was as director of sugar research under a new Sugar Research Scheme launched in 1947. We regret that these misstatements occurred.

会计信息披露是企业向信息使用者揭示和反映企业价值运动,高质量的信息披露可以降低信息不对称程度,使投资者能更正确地做出判断。以生物医药业上市公司为例,采用Logistic回归分析方法,系统研究公司治理与会计信息的披露质量之间的关系,发现公司治理中的董事会规模、独立董事比例和监事会规模的提高会使得会计信息披露质量得到提高,董事会会议次数与会计信息披露质量显著负相关。

Stokes drag on a sphere in a nematic liquid crystal

The Stokes-Einstein relation relates the diffusion coefficient of a spherical Brownian particle in a viscous fluid to its friction coefficient. For a particle suspended in anisotropic liquid, theory predicts that the drag coefficient should also be anisotropic. Using video microscopy coupled with particle tracking routines, the Brownian fluctuations of micrometer-sized particles were analyzed to yield a quantitative measurement of the diffusion coefficients parallel and perpendicular to the nematic director. The experimental values agree quite well with recent numerical calculations that take into account the distortions of the director field in the vicinity of the particles.     

Corrections and clarifications

In the Random Samples item "Charting biodiversity to guide conservation" (5 Feb., p. 758), Janis Alcom should have been described as the "director of CNA ['conservation needs assessment'] at the Biodiversity Support Program, a consortium of the World Wildlife Fund, the World Resources Institute, and the Nature Conservancy."     

Erratum

In the 18 May issue of Science (p. 719, Don Paarlberg was identified as "former director of Agricultural Economics, U.S. Department of Agriculture." The attribution should have read: "Don Paarlberg, 1968, Purdue University, now Director of Agricultural Economics, U.S. Department of Agriculture."
