Correction

In Bernard D. Davis' article "Bacterial domestication: Underlying assumptions" (Policy Forum, 13 Mar., p. 1329), the word "no" was erroneously omitted from the last sentence of the first full paragraph in column two on page 1334. The sentence should have read, "But this view builds on a parallel between genetic engineering and the physical technologies, rather than on a much closer model, with very different predictions: the domestication of wild organisms, resulting in enormous benefits and no catastrophes."     

Corrections and clarifications

In the Perspective "alpha-Helical coiled coils: More facts and better predictions" by C. Cohen and D. A. D. Parry (28 Jan., p. 488), the second sentence of the second paragraph of column 1 on page 489 should have read, "The structural motif is indeed a left-handed three-helix bundle with left-handed chain connectivity."     

The southern corn leaf blight epidemic

In "The sotuthern corn leaf blight epidemic" by L. A. Tatum (19 Mar., p. 1113), the first sentence of the third paragraph under the sidehead "History of southern corn leaf blight" on page 1114 should read "The loss in 1969 rather than "1968."     

Erratum

In the report "Associative behavioral modification in Hermissenda: Cellular correlates" by T. J. Crow and D. L. Alkon (18 July, p. 412), the last sentence on page 412, column 2, paragraph 1, should read, "We have now found that modification of the photopositive response in Hermissenda is correlated with cellular changes in the type B photo-receptors."     

Corrections

In the report "Distribution and detection of positrons from an orbiting nuclear reactor" by E. W. Hones and P. R. Higbie (28 Apr., p. 448), the following corrections should be noted. The first sentence of the caption for figure 1 should have read, "Location of SMM (dots) and Cosmos 1176 (triangles) at the times of 21 of the most intense 511-keV gamma events recorded by SMM during the 29 April to 2 September 1980 operating period." The first sentence of the caption for figure 3 should have read, "Estimated differential energy spectrum positrons escaping from Cosmos 1176 per joule of fission energy." On page 450, the second sentence of the first full paragraph should have referred to event 5, not event 59.     

Erratum

In the article "String as a theory of everything" by M. Mitchell Waldrop (Research News, 20 Sept., p. 1251), the last line of the first column was inadvertantly omitted. The affected sentence should have read, "Not only were the strong interactions far more complex than predicted by field theory, but the particles that participated in the strong interactions-the hadrons, a group that includes protons, neutrons, pi mesons, and many others-seemed to be relatively large, extended objects as much as 1 Fermi across (10(-13) centimeter)." In the next-to-the-last line of the second full paragraph in column 2 on page 1252, 10(-19) should have been 10(+19). Finally, the words "quandary" (page 1251, column 1, paragraph 6, line 2) and "quark" (page 1252, column 3, last paragraph, line 18) were misspelled.     

Erratum

In "Potentially simple technique for rearing "germ-free fish" by Evelyn Shaw [Science 125, 987 (17 May 1957)] the second sentence of the second paragraph should read: "Of 25 trials (consisting of 10 eggs per trial) treated in this manner (3), eight trials remained germ-free throughout the experiment."     

Corrections and clarifications

In the report "Activation and regeneration of rhodopsin in the insect visual cycle" by A. Kiselev and S. Subramaniam (25 Nov., p. 1369), the second and third sentences of the last paragraph on page 1371 were incorrectly printed. They should have read, "When rhodopsin was re-excited immediately after it was regenerated, most of the metarhodopsin formed was thermally stable (that is, M(b) was formed predominantly; Fig. 4A). However, when rhodopsin was re-examined after waiting for various lengths of time (in the dark), an exponential increase was observed in the amount of thermally unstable metarhodopsin produced, implying heterogeneity in the rhodopsin population."     

Evaluation of instruction

In "Evaluation of instruction" by Peter K. Gessner [11 May 1973, p. 569], sentence 4, paragraph 2, column 1, should read as follows: "It would seem likely that such an evaluative device would not differentiate between students able to solve the first problem presented to them and those who, although they may have been able to solve the fifth problem variant presented to them, failed to solve the first four."     

Erratum

In the article "Nuclear risks: Still uncertain" (News and Comment, 18 May, p. 714), in the fourth paragraph, the sentence, "If one assumes that 40 gigawatts are produced a year, as was the case in 1975. . ., then the nuclear industry is causing two cancer deaths a year," should have read, "20 cancer deaths a year."     

Corrections and clarifications

In the article "Light emission from silicon" by S. S. Iyer and Y.-H. Xie (2 Apr., p. 40), the title in reference 33 on page 46 should have read, "Extended Abstracts of the 1992 Solid-State Devices and Materials Conference."     

Erratum

On page 1426 of the report "Association of parvoviruses with rheumatoid arthritis of humans" by R. W. Simpson et al. (30 Mar., p. 1425), a portion of the text beginning on line 18 of the first full paragraph in column 3 was incorrectly printed. It should have read, "We were unable to detect 24-nm particles in brains of normal mice from our colony or mice intracerebrally inoculated with extracts of synovial cells from patients with noninflammatory degenerative joint disease (DJD). More conclusive evidence for the identity of RA-1 as a parvovirus comes from our recent success in demonstrating that CsCl gradient fractions containing the infectious 24-nm particles can be extracted for a single-stranded DNA which is approximately 4.5 kilobases in size."     

Erratum

The title of the letter from Andrew T. Weil (12 Sept., p. 1182) should have been "Coca, not cocaine." The second and third sentences of the second paragraph should have read, "I have advocated research on the therapeutic properties of whole coca leaf. Cocaine and coca are quite different substances with very different potentials for abuse and benefit."     

Corrections and clarifications

In the report "A nuclear-encoded form II RuBisCO in dinoflagellates" by D. Morse et al. (16 June, p. 1622), in the seventh line of the first full paragraph in the third column on page 1622, "glysine-cysteine" should have been "guanine-cytosine."     

Cytogenetics of Sex in Gibberella cyanogena (DESM.) SACC

Harold F. Gray, of Corning, Calif., has called my attention to an error in the note "On the rule for leap year" [Science 123, 544 (30 Mar. 1956)]. In the sixth paragraph of the article (page 545), the end of the second sentence should read ". . . the century years 1800, 1900, and 2100 are not divisible by 400 and, hence, are not leap years; but 2000 is divisible by 400 and, hence, is a leap year."     

Animal research guidelines

In the next-to-last paragraph of the letter from Adrian R. Morrison and Peter J. Hand (31 Aug. 1984, p. 878), the first sentence was incorrectly punctuated. It should have read, "On the basis of knowledge we have gained as expert witnesses for the defense in two court trials, an appeal before a Public Health Service board, and the HHS meeting, we can make one thing immediately clear."     

Erratum

In Eliot Marshall's article "California's debate on carcinogens" (News & Comment, 20 Mar., p. 1459), the last sentence of the third paragraph, which refers to fines to be imposed under Proposition 65, should have read, "Companies found guilty of violating it will be charged $2500 a day and legal costs." The article gave the incorrect figure of "$25,000 a day."

In Constance Holden's News & Comment artide "Kuwait's unjust deserts: Damage to its deserts" (8 Mar., p. 1175), the second sentence of the fifth paragraph should have read, "Any rock that has sat on the desert for a long time develops a shiny ;desert varnish' of light-absorbing manganese and iron oxides."

In "Locus of short-term visual storage" by B. Sakitt (26 Dec., p. 1318), the sentence on lines 10-13 of paragraph I should have read "In the partial report condition, an auditory tone was presented with some delay after the letter presentation."

In the article "Americans scarce in math grad schools" by Gina Kolata (News and Comment, 15 Nov., p. 787), the fifth sentence of the second paragraph should have read, "New York University's Courant Institute has five Americans among its 25 first-year graduate students with financial support."
