Abstract— Some aspects of the restraint and anaesthesia of birds, including small birds such as the budgerigar, are described together with some volatile, gaseous, and non-volatile anaesthetic drugs Methods of induction of anaesthesia and sites of injection are discussed.
Résumé— Quelques aspects de l'entrave et de l'anesthesie des oiseaux, y compris les très petits, sont dêrits, en même temps que des drogues anesthésiques volatiles, gazeuses et non-volatiles. La méthode d'induction de l'anesthésie et l'endroit de l'injection sont discutés.

The Nutrient Requirements of Budgerigars

Abstract— A review is presented of the nutrient requirements of budgerigars. Requirements for pet birds and breeding birds are discussed and reference is made to diseases of possible nutritional origin with particular mention of thyroid dysplasia and "french moult."
Résumé— On passe en revue les besoins nutritifs des perruches inséparables, ceux des oiseaux de maison et ceux des oiseaux reproducteurs. On signale les maladies qui ont une origine nutritionnelle possible, en particulier la dysphagie thyroîdienne et la mue pathologique.
Zusammenfassung— Es wird ein Überblick über den Nahrungsmittelbedarf von Wellensittichen gebracht. Es wird besprochen, was Haus-und Zuchtvögel brauchen, und auf Krankheiten, deren Ursachen möglicherweise bei der Ernährung liegen, ganz besonders auf Schilddrüsendysphasie und das Mausern, hingewiesen.     

The Clinical Approach to Tumours in Cage Birds*—I

Abstract— The more important literature concerning neoplasia of cage birds is reviewed, and the incidence of the various types of tumour is discussed. Special attention is given to the neoplasms of budgerigars with reference to the age, sex and environment of the affected birds. This latter work is based on the results of 922 budgerigar autopsies carried out by the author.
Résumé— La documentation la plus importante concernant la néoplasie des oiseaux en cage est étudiée ici, et la fréquence des différents types de tumeurs est discutée. Une attention spêiale est donnée au néoplasma des oiseaux en cage avec référence à l'âge, au sexe et à l'entourage des oiseaux atteints. Ce dernier travail se base sur les résultats de l'autopsie exêutée par l'auteur sur 922 oiseaux.
Zusammenfassung— Hier wird das bedeutsamere Schrifttum über Neoplasie bei Zimmervögeln rezensiert und das Vorkommen der verschiedenen Geschwulstarten besprochen. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird Neoplasmen bei Sittichen in Bezug auf Alter, Geschlecht, Umgebungsumstände der betroffenen Vögel geschenkt. Diese letztere Arbeit beruht auf den Resultaten von 922 Sittich-Autopsien, welche vom Verfasser vorgenommen wurden.     

Treatment of malignant neoplasia. Surgical management

As a guide to the surgical management of malignant neoplasms some aspects of the incidence and behaviour of canine and feline neoplasms are reviewed. Résumé. Afin de guider le traitement chirurgical de néoplasmes malins, l'auteur passe en revue certains aspects de la fréquence et du comportement de néoplasmes chez les canins et les félins. Zusammenfassung. Als Anhalt für die chirurgische Behandlung maligner Neoplasmen werden einige Aspekte der Häufigkeit und des Verhaltens von Neoplasmen bei Hund und Katze betrachtet.     

Conditions of the Canine Oesophagus*—III Anaesthesia for Oesophageal Surgery

Abstract— Anaesthesia for oesophageal surgery presents very few peculiar features, and any sound anaesthetic technique will provide satisfactory results. It is considered that relaxant drugs have a definite place in anaesthesia for this type of surgery.
Résumé— L'anesthésie pour la chirurgie oesophagiennc présente peu de particularity spéciales et une technique anesthésique parfaitedonn erait des réultats satisfaisants. II est généralement remarqué que les drogues relaxantes ont une place marquée dans l'anesthéie pour ce genre de chirurgie.
Zusammenfassung— Anästhesie bei Speiseröhrenoperationen ist von sehr wenigen besonderen Umständen begleitet und jede zuverlässige anästhetische Methode fiihrt zu zufriedenstellenden Resultatcn. Eine definitive Stellung wird den Entspannungsdrogen für die Anästhesie bei Operationen dieser Art eingeräumt.     

Some of the Major Problems of Budgerigar Pathology

Abstract— A review is given of some of the major problems concerning the pathology of the more common diseases of budgerigars. Special mention is made of thyroid disease, fatty degeneration of the liver, gout and disease of the kidneys, diseases of the alimentary tract including necrotic inflammation of the crop, french moult, infectious diseases and neoplasia.
Résumé— L'auteur passes en revue quelques-uns des problèmes les plus importants concernant la pathologie des maladies les plus communes chez les perruches inséparables. II signale spécialement une maladie de la thyroîde, la dégénérescence graisseuse du foie, la goutte et une maladie des reins, ainsi que les maladies du tractus digestif y compris I'inflammation nécrotique du jabot, la mue, les maladies infectieuses et les néoplasies.
Zusammenfassung— Es wird ein Überblick iiber einige der wichtigsten Probleme in Bezug auf die Pathologie der üblicheren Krankheiten von Wellensittichen gebracht. Besonders erwähnt werden in diesem Zusammenhang Schilddrüsenerkrankungen, Leberverfettung, Gicht und Niercnerkrankungen, Krankheiten des Verdauungskanals, einschliesslich nekrotischer Entzündungen des Kropfes, Mausern, Infektionskrankheiten und Geschwulstbildung.     

Calcific annuli in the aorta of a dog

This report describes a case with calcific annuli in the aorta, together with severe mitral insufficiency of the heart as well as myocarditis and bronchitis. Physical, radiographic, electrocardiographic, biochemical and haematological features are reported. The incidence of calcification of the cardiovascular system, the site and nature of the calcific lesion and haeniodynamic correlates with the combination of coarctation of the aorta and mitral insufficiency in man are discussed.

On rapporte un cas de calcifications annulaires de l'aorte, accompagnées d'insuffisance mitrale, de myocardite et de bronchite; on décrit les constatations d'ordre physique, radiologique, électrocardiographique, biochimique et hématologique. On discute la fréquence des calcifications du système cardiovasculaire, leur siège, leur nature, leurs implications hémodynamiques et les rapports qui existent entre elles et l'association du rétrécissement aortique et l'insuffisance mitrale dans l'espèce humaine.

CT 1341 and thiopentone compared in feline anaesthesia by an intermittent injection technique

The steroid anaesthetic CT 1341 and thiopentone were each given by repeated intravenous injection to cats over a period of 3 hours and then the animals were allowed to recover. With CT 1341, maintenance of surgical anaesthesia was uncomplicated and the cats recovered rapidly. Thiopentone, however, produced both cumulative anaesthetic and respiratory depressant effects in the same cats during maintenance of anaesthesia, and recovery was protracted. The findings suggest that CT 1341 is suitable for use by an intermittent injection technique and may be employed as the sole anaesthetic for prolonged anaesthesia in cats. The differing actions of CT 1341 and thiopentone are discussed in relation to their distribution, metabolism and excretion. Résumé. On a donné l'anesthésigue stéroïde CT 1341 et de la thiopentone par injections intraveineuses répétées à des chats au cours d'une période de trois heures et on a alors permis aux animaux de se rétablir. Avec CT 1341, maintenir une anesthésie chirurgicle n'était pas compliqué et les chats s'étaient vite rétablis. La thiopentone cependant, a produit à la fois une anesthésie cumulative et des effets respiratoires déprimants chez les měmes chats pendant que l'anesthésie était maintenue et la guérison a été prolongée. Les découvertes suggèrent que CT 1341 convient à ětre utilisé par une technique d'injection intermittente et peut ětre employé comme seul anesthésique pour une anesthésie prolongée chez les chats. On discute des actions différant de CT 1341 et de la thiopentone en rapport avec leur distribution, leur métabolisme et leur excrétion. Zusammenfassung. Das Steroid Narkotikum CT 1341 und Thiopenton wurde jedes durch widerholte intravenose Spritzen an Katzen ùber eine Zeitspanne von drei Stunden gegeben und dann Hess man die Tiere sich davon erholen. Mit CT 1341 war das Aufrechthalten von chirurgi-scher Anàsthesie unkompliziert und die Katzen erholten sich schnell. Thiopenton jedoch pro-duzierte beides, kumulative Narkose und respiratorisch beruhigende Wirkungen in denselben Katzen wǎhrend des Aufrechthalten der Anàsthesie und Erholung protrahiert war. Die Befunde deuten an, dass CT 1341 sich fur den Gebrauch in intermittierender Spritechnik eignet und kann als alleiniges Narkotikum fur verlǎngerte Anàsthesie in Katzen verwendet werden. Die unterschiedlichen Wirkungen von CT 1341 und Thiopenton werden diskutiert in bezug auf ihre Verteilung, Stoffwechsel und Exkertion.     

A 6-year survey of tumours of dogs and cats removed surgically in private practice

All the tumours removed surgically from dogs and cats in a private practice over a period of 6 years were examined histologically. There were eight tumours of cats and 231 tumours of dogs. Of the tumours of the dog, 150 were of the skin, fifty-nine were from the mammary gland, nine were from the mouth, nine from the testes and four were from the vagina. Details of the type of tumour, the breed, age and sex of the animals are given. The subsequent history of many of the animals with malignant tumours was known and the details are given. These results are briefly discussed.
Résumé. Les auteurs ont effectué un examen histologique de toutes les tumeurs des chats et des chiens enlevées chirurgicalement dans l'espace de 6 ans en clientèle privée. Il s'agissait de 8 tumeurs de chats et de 231 tumeurs canines; parmi ces dernières, il y avait 150 atteintes cutanées, 59 tumeurs mammaires, 9 buccales, 9 testiculaires et 4 tumeurs vaginales. Les auteurs décrivent les types des tumeurs et donnent des indications sur les races, l'âge et le sexe des animaux, ainsi que sur l'évolution post-opératoire. Discussion des résultats obtenus.
Zusammenfassung. Alle Turnoren, die innerhalb eines Zeitraums von 6 Jahren in einer Privatpraxis chirurgisch entfernt wurden, wurden histologisch untersucht. Es handelte sich urn 8 Tumoren von Katzen und 231 Tumoren von Hunden. Die Tumoren der Hunde waren 150 Hauttumoren, 59 Geschwülste der Milchdrüse, 9 Maulturnoren, 9 Hodenturnoren und 4 Vaginalgeschwülste. Einzelheiten des Tumortyps und der Rasse, des Alters und des Geschlechts der Tiere werden angegeben. Die weitere Geschichte vieler der Tiere mit malignen Tumoren war bekannt, und Einzelheiten darüber werden ebenfalls angegeben. Diese Ergebnisse werden kurz besprochen.     

Pleuritis in the Dog Associated with Actinomyces-like Organisms

Abstract— The clinico-pathological and radiological features of two cases of effusive canine pleuritis are presented. In both instances Actinomyces-like organisms were encountered but attempts to culture them (using aerobic and anaerobic methods) were unsuccessful. In one case Salmonella dublin was obtained in cultures at all stages of the investigations. The zoonotic implications of these and simiIar cases are discussed.
Résumé— GL'auteur expose les caractéristiques clinico-pathologiques et radiologiques de la pleurite exsudative, observée chez deux chiens. Dans l'un et l'autre cas ont été décelés des organismes semblables à l'actinomycès, mais les tentatives de culture (en milieu aerobie et anaerobie) ont échoué. Dans l'un des cas, Salmonella dublin a été obtenue à tous les stades de l'investigation. L'auteur examine les aspects zoonotiques des deux cas étudiés et de cas semblables.
Zusammenfassung— Die klinisch-pathologischen und die radiologischen Befunde von zwei Fällen von Pleuritis exsudativa des Hundes werden dargestellt. In beiden Fällen wurden astinomy-cesähnliche Organismen gefunden, aber die Kulturversuche (mit aeroben und anaeroben Methoden) verliefen erfolglos. In einem Fall wurde Salmonella dublin in Kulturen aller Stadien der Untersuchung erhalten. Die zoonotische Bedeutung dieser und ähnlicher Fälle wird besprochen.     

The Working Sheep Dog—A Survey of Diseases and Methods of Husbandry, with a Review of Recent Advances in Canine Nutrition

Abstract— The paper presents surveyed data to establish the present methods of feeding and management of the working sheep dog. Figures as to the incidence of disease and causes of mortality are also included and references to recent advances in canine nutrition and medicine integrated with these findings.
Résumé— L'article présente les résultats d'une enquête sur les méthodes d'alimentation et de régime de travail chez le chien berger. Des chiffres sont présentés en ce qui concerne l'incidence de la maladie et les causes de mortalité et des corrélations établies entre ces chiffres et les progrès récents en matière de nutrition et de médecine canine.
Zusammenfassung— Dieser Vortrag bringt auf einer Untersuchung beruhende Angaben zur Festsetzung der gegenwärtig besten Methoden zur Fütterung und Behandlung des arbeitenden Schäferhundes. L'établissement de la diagnose, la classification des genres de tumeurs par situation et la diagnose different)elle sont tous discutés. Zusammenfassung— Es wird der Gesichtspunkt eines praktischen Arztes über die Diagnose von Geschwulsten bei Zimmervögeln geschildert. Die Festlegung der Diagnose, die Klassifikation der Geschwulstarten je nach ihrer Lage und unterschiedliche Diagnosen werden besprochen.     

Veterinary Examination of Exotic Animals Prior to Export: Some Observations with Particular Regard to East Africa

Abstract— The live animal trade is extensive and large numbers are involved. The potential dangers of such a trade, in terms of human and animal health, are emphasised. Observations on the role of the veterinary surgeon in signing "veterinary health certificates" are given, with particular reference to the author's experiences in East Africa. The difficulties are outlined and recommendations made.
Résumé— Les animaux vivants font I'objet, en très grand nombre, d'un commerce important, dont I'auteur expose les dangers du point de vue de la santé humaine et animale. L'auteur formule ensuite des observations sur le rôle du vétkrinaire chargé de délivrer des "certificats de santé", compte tenu notamment de I'expérience acquise en Afrique orientale. Brève ttude des difficultés rencontrtes, et recommandations.
Zusammenfassung— Der Handel mit lebenden Tieren ist sehr verbreitet und betrifft eine grosse Anzahl von Tieren. Die möglichen Gefahren dieses Handels für die menschliche und die Tier-gesundheit werden betont. Beobachtungen über die Rolle des Tierartzes bei der Ausstellung von "Tiergesundheitsbescheinigungen" werden unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Erfahrungen des Autors in Ostafrika mitgeteilt. Die Schwierigkeiten werden erläutert und Empfehlungen gegeben.     

Electroencephalography and space-occupying lesions in small animals

EEGs have been recorded from 207 dogs and cats with presumed intra-cranial space-occupying lesions; twenty-seven cases were confirmed postmortem. The clinical presenting signs of the series are considered, and the abnormal characters of the EEGs are analysed and discussed. The place of the EEG in differential diagnosis and its possible future value in association with brain surgery are discussed.
Résumé. On a enregistré des électroencéphalogrammes de 207 chiens et chats suspects de lésions intracraniennes expansives; ce diagnostic a pu être confirmé par l'examen nécropsique. On décrit les manifestations cliniques majeures dans cette série et on considère les anomalies de l'E.E.G., dont on analyse les particularités et dont on envisage l'importance diagnostique sous Tangle de la chirurgie du cerveau.
Zusammenfassung. Es wurden EEGs von 207 Katzen und Hunden mit vermuteten raumbean-spruchenden Läsionen im Schädelraum aufgenommen; 27 Fälle da von wurden durch Autopsie bestätigt. Die klinischen Erscheinungsbilder der Serie werden betrachtet und der anomale Gharakter der EEGs wird analysiert und besprochen. Der Platz des EEG in der Differentialdioagnose und sein möglicher künftiger Wert in Zusammenhang mit der Gehirnchirurgie wird besprochen.     

Chylothorax in the domestic cat—a review

This review of the principal general features of chylothorax includes the aetiology, diagnosis, diagnostic methods and treatment. The results of a study of the anatomical features of the duct and its associated cistern in sixty cats are discussed in relation to both chylothorax and the elective ligation of the ruptured duct in the cat. The inconstancy of collateral channels and extra-terminal lymphatico-venous connections is discussed.
Résumé. Cette revue des principales caractéristiques générales du chylothorax comprend l'étiologie, le diagnostic, les méthodes diagnostiques et le traitement. On discute, chez soixante chats, des résultats d'une étude des caractéristiques anatomiques du conduit et de sa citerne associée, par rapport et au chylothorax et à la ligation élective de la rupture du conduit chez le chat. On discute de l'inconstance des canaux collatéraux et des connexions extraterminales lymphatiques-veineuses.
Zusammenfassung. Dieser Überblick der hauptsächlichen Merkmale von Chylothorax schliesst die Ätiologie, Diagnose, diagnostische Methoden und Behandlung ein. Die Resultate einer Studie der anatomischen Merkmale des Ductus und seiner verbundenen Cisternas in sechzig Katzen, werden in bezug auf beides, Chylothorax sowie der auswählenden Ligatur des gebrochenen Ductus in Katzen, diskutiert. Die Unbeständigkeit von Umgehungskänlen und besonderen terminalen lymphatico-venösen Zusammenhängen werden besprochen.     

Rabies Symposium—IV. The Veterinary Profession and Rabies Control in Great Britain

Abstract— A review is presented of the legislative measures introduced to control rabies in animals in the U.K. The range of susceptible animals together with symptoms is discussed. The world distribution and control, treatment and prevention measures are outlined with particular mention of the position in Great Britain.
Résumé— –L'auteur résume les mesures législatives introduites pour le contrôle de la rage chez les animaux dans le Royaume-Uni et agite la question des races prédisposées. II donne un aperçu de la distribution mondiale et des mesures de contrôle, de traitement et de prévention de la rage, avec référence particulière à la situation en Grande-Bretagne.
Zusammenfassung— Es wird ein Überblick über die gesetzlichen Massnahmen, die zur Bekämp-fung von Tollwut bei Tieren in Grossbritannien eingeführt worden sind, gegeben. Die krankheits-empfänglichen Tiere werden aufgezahlt und besprochen und die Symptome erörtert. Ausserdem werden die Verbreitung und Bekämpfung der Krankheit in der Welt, sowie Behandlungs- und Verhütungsmassnahmen beschrieben, wobei besonders auf die Situation in Grossbritannien hinge-wiesen wird.     

Observations on the cardiovascular and respiratory effects of guaiacol glycerol ether in conscious and anaesthetized dogs

Guaiacol glycerol ether was given intravenously to dogs in both the conscious state and during anaesthesia with thiamylal sodium and with halothane/ oxygen. The effects of guaiacol glycerol ether on heart rate, ECG, blood pressure, respiratory rate and arterial blood Po ₂, values were recorded, and their significance is discussed.
Résumé. Le Gaïacolate de Glycérile a été injecté par voie veineuse à des chiens en état de veille et au cours d'une anesthésie par le thiamylal sodique et l'halothane/oxygène. On a étudié les effects du gaïacolate de glycérile sur les battements cardiaques, l'électrocardiogramme, la tension artérielle, le rythme respiratoire et Ies valeurs de la Po ₂ artérielle; la signification de ces effets a été discutée.
Zusammenfassung. Guajacolglycoläther wurde Hunden intravenös bei Bewusstsein und während der Narkose mit Thiamylalnatrium und mit Halothan/Sauerstoff verabreicht. Die Wirkung von Guajacolglyceroläther auf die Herzfrequenz, das EKG, den Blutdruck, die Herzfrequenz, das EKG, den Blutdruck, die Atemfrequenz und die Po₂-Werte des arteriellen Blutes wurde bestimmt und die Bedeutung besprochen.
