The selfing effect in berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) was analysed by comparing generation means for nine agronomic traits (dry matter yield, plant height, leaf-stem ratio, harvest index, seed yield and its components). Parents, S1, S2, S3, and S4 generations of six populations of different geographical origin (3 from Egypt and 3 from southern Italy) were investigated to estimate the relative changes with increasing homozygosity and to prove the effectiveness of selfing in a breeding program. The experiment was carried out at Foggia (Italy) under field conditions for two years (1995 and 1996) adopting two cutting treatments: at fifth internode elongation (A) and flowering (B). The mean values decreased with the advancement in selfing generations in both years and cutting treatments for the most of the traits. Treatment B yielded more biomass and seed yield than treatment A in both years. Cutting treatments did not affect the adaptability of the selfed progenies of populations with different geographical origin, in fact, the Italian populations were more productive for dry matter under both cutting treatments (856.6 g m-2 on average), whereas Egyptian populations proved superior for seed yield particularly under treatment B (62.5 g m-2 on average). Inbreeding depression was greater for forage dry matter and seed yield (−62and −79% on average, respectively), whereas the plant height and 1000-seed weight were the least susceptible traits (−26 and −19% on average, respectively). Estimates of the parameters of the stability analysis showed that not all populations responded to inbreeding level and environment variations to the same degree. Differences were evident under treatment A, only. Development of self-fertile, relatively vigorous inbred lines of berseem clover with different degrees of homozygosity appears possible. Genotypes tolerant to selfing from Egyptian and Italian groups have been obtained by inbreeding and selection for self-fertility; they could be utilised as basis for producing new breeding activities. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Berseem clover ( Trifolium alexandrinum L.) is an annual forage crop widely grown in Mediterranean environments. Dry matter partitioning in the leaf, stem and root and seed production of three populations of Egyptian as well as Italian origin were evaluated under four cutting regimes. The cutting treatments were applied to the plants at different stages of plant development: at the fourth (A) and eighth nodes elongation (B), at early flowering (C) and physiological maturity of seeds (D), After herbage, harvest plants were utilized for seed yield and evaluation of its seed yield components. Higher dry matter and seed yield was obtained in treatments D and B, respectively. In the other treatments, dry matter content was lower than in treatment D and related to the phenological development of the plant. Dry matter content in the root was higher when the cut was applied at early flowering. Cutting regimes influenced plant mortality, with the number of dead plants increasing from the cut applied in early (A) to that in the final treatment (D). Cuts applied at early stage of development depleted root reserves causing plant death. This peculiarity could be a tool for selecting populations with higher persistence and with a more tolerant physiological response to stress imposed by cuts. The populations of Egyptian origin, in comparison with the Italian ones, were more productive in dry matter in the early stage of growth and in all treatments were higher in seed weight.  相似文献

Berseem clover Trifolium alexandrinum L. is an annual forage legume commonly grown in pure stands and in grass mixtures in the Medi-terranean basin. Six populations were naturally cross-pollinated in 1990 and 1991 by a half-sib breeding method. In 1992 and 1993. 54 half-sib maternal plants, six original populations, and six advanced populations were field evaluated for forage (short cycle, harvest made at seven or eight inlernodes: long cycle, harvested at flowering) and seed yield (no forage harvest) in experiments at the Forage Crop Institute at Foggia, Italy (typical Mediterranean location). Genetic variability, narrow-sense herilability, genetic and phenotypic correlations among forage and seed yield component trails were investigated. The genetic variance in dry matter among maternal half-sib populations in short cycle was 51% greater than in long cycle. Narrow-sense heritabilily was 35% higher in short cycle than long cycle for dry matter and 26% higher for seed weight than seed yield. The magnitude of the genetic variance components and genetic correlations suggested that selection among plants of maternal half-sib populations would be more effective for improving dry matter in short than in long cycle harvests. The selection applied in the study was not effective for increasing seed yield per se however, the trait may be increased by selecting indirectly for seed weight.  相似文献

The influence of cutting applied at four stages of plant growth on dry matter, crude protein, total available carbohydrates and reducing sugar partitioning was examined in six genotypes of berseem ( Trifolium alexandrinum L.). The research was conducted in Foggia (Italy) during 1990 and 1991 in a glasshouse with controlled water application. The plants were grown in a plastic-lined, PVC cylinder. At each cut, dry matter and chemical components were evaluated in leaf, stem and root fractions; at the end of the biological cycle, seed yield was recorded.
Plants showed similar dry matter partitioning between leaves and stems at the eighth internode stage. The crude protein concentration was highest in leaf fractions, reaching the maximum value (31%) at an early stage of growth (fourth internode stage). The maximum value of total available carbohydrates was obtained in the stems at the early flowering stage (11 %), whereas reducing sugars almost always showed higher concentrations in the leaves (4 %). As for forage and seed yields, the developmental stage at cutting had a great influence on dry matter and chemical component partitioning among the different organs. Genotypic differences were observed for dry matter partitioning in leaves and stems in all developmental stages, but diversity in chemical component content was more evident in the roots.  相似文献

The effects of soil water deficit and interspecific plant interaction were studied on the dry matter (DM) yield of white clover and ryegrass and on the morphogenesis of white clover. Plants were grown either: (1) individually (no interaction); or in a mixture of equal plant numbers with either (2) just shoot interaction, or (3) both shoot+root interaction. Plants were subjected to soil water deficits corresponding to no (0 MPa), moderate (−0.5 MPa) or severe (−1.0 MPa) water deficit. Ryegrass had higher above- and below-ground DM yields than white clover. The above- and below-ground DM yield for ryegrass, and the above-ground DM yield, stolon growth and relative growth rate (RGR), and leaf appearance rate (LAR) for white clover decreased as soil water deficit increased. In shoot+root interaction at no and moderate soil water deficit levels, white clover had the highest proportion of above-ground growth in the leaf form (69%) and had, respectively, 11% and 32% more above-ground DM yield than when grown in just shoot interaction; ryegrass had, respectively, 20% and 25% more above-ground DM yield than ryegrass grown in just shoot interaction. In shoot+root interaction at severe soil water deficit, ryegrass had twice as much above-ground DM yield as white clover (3.50 g per plant versus 1.59 g per plant, respectively) and white clover had 60% less above-ground DM yield than when grown in just shoot interaction. In a soil column of restricted depth (30 cm) at no and moderate soil water deficit levels, remarkable increases in shoot biomass yield were observed for both white clover and ryegrass grown in shoot+root interaction. The increased shoot biomass yield of ryegrass can be attributed to benefits from white clover's N fixing ability, whereas the causes for increased white clover biomass yield need to be studied further. However, at severe soil water deficit, ryegrass had a competitive advantage over white clover when grown in shoot+root interaction. This was due to the larger root system of ryegrass and its ability to control transpirational losses more efficiently, thus prolonging its growth period compared with white clover.  相似文献

Modified mass and family selection for seed yield production of berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) c.v. ‘Fahl’ were applied for two generations. Two hundred plants (5 % intensity of selection) were selected for seed yield in the first season, 1985/86. In the second season, 1986/87, selection between and within half-sib families was practiced. In addition, equal parts of seeds from each of the 200 selected plants were bulked to form the C1 modified mass selection; after establishing, the same procedure was adopted to form the C2 generation. The cycles 1 and 2 of half-sib families and modified mass selection along with the base population family were evaluated for forage and seed yields. The realized gains from modified mass selection were 6.03 and 9.51 % for fresh forage yield, 5.57 and 10.86 % for protein yield and 13.23 and 16.19 % for seed yield in cycles 1 and 2, respectively, over the base population. The realized gain from family selection in cycle 2 as a percentage of the base population mean amounted to 11.32, 13.35, 17.47 and 3.15% for forage, protein, and seed yield and seed index, respectively. The broad sense heritability, as estimated from the variance components was 89.63, 63.03, and 76.67 % for dry forage, seed yield and seed index, respectively. Although, all these five traits (fresh, dry, protein, and seed yield and seed index) had positive correlation with each other, weak correlations were found between seed yield and forage yields. Furthermore, close associations were found among forage yield traits.  相似文献

Two seed lots of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) cultivar 'Makibashiro' classified as high and poor quality seed lots, based on the speed of germination (T50), were used to examine the influence of seed quality on field establishment and forage yield. Field emergence rate was estimated approximately three weeks after sowing and found that plots sown with high quality seeds (Lot 1) had 452 seedlings m-2 compared with 392 seedlings in the plots sown with low quality seed lot (Lot 2), but the difference was not significant. However, plant density in autumn (November, 1993), 3 months after sowing, was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the plots of the Lot 1 seed than that from the Lot 2 seed. The percentage of clover plants surviving over the winter from Lot 1 plots was 55% compared with 39% from the Lot 2 plots, but the difference was not significant. Total forage yield in Lot 1 plots harvested in July and monthly intervals to October, was significantly increased by 44% (P < 0.05) over that of Lot 2 plots, but this greater forage yield in high seed quality seed lot plots was produced early in the season. The results strongly imply that the primary advantage to be gained from high quality seed is an improved field establishment, which led to increased yield of clover. In Lot 1 plots, the percentage of weed dry matter in all the four harvests remained below 1% of die seasonal dry matter production, whereas in Lot 2 plots die percentage of weed dry matter ranged from 3.3–16.9%.  相似文献

Dry matter and seed production of five annual leguminous species hairy vetch ( Vicia villosa Roth cv. Orsara) , crimson clover ( Trifolium incarnatum L. ecotype Campano) , squarrosum clover ( T. squarrosum L. ecotype Calabro) , persian clover ( T. resupinatum cv. Accadia) and fenugreek ( Trigonella foenum-graecum L. ecotype Maltese) was estimated in 1989–90 under two density and irrigation rates and with two cutting treatments. The experiments were done at the Forage Crops Institute of Foggia, which has a typical Mediterranean environment. The forage cut severely affected the regrowth of the plants in all species. The year and irrigation factors affect dry matter, seed production and seed yield components more than the plant density rates. The averages over the years, for dry matter and seed yield were 21.0 % and 20.5 % higher in the irrigated than the not irrigated ones. The lower plant density rate, for seed yield trait, gave better result in hairy vetch in irrigated and non-irrigated treatment. Whereas in the other species, the lower rate of planting gave greater yield under non-irrigated and the higher rate under irrigated growing condition. The seed yield components most influenced by irrigation were: thousand seed weight and seeds/pod in hairy vetch and heads/tiller and seeds/head in clovers species. Fenugreek was the earliest forage crop (cut at the beginning of March), followed by crimson and persian clovers (cut at the middle of April) and squarrosum clover and hairy vetch (cut in the middle-late of May). All the cultivars and ecotypes considered not regrowth after cut and could represent an important fresh forage resource for the period March–May for the Mediterranean regions.  相似文献

Delaying harvest of P988 from the boot stage to the maturity stage significantly reduced 1) forage greenchop yield of P988 grown on Striga - infested soil at 1st and 3rd harvest of July sowing and at 3rd harvest of October sowing, 2) root dry weight of P988 grown on Striga -infested soil at 3rd harvest of July and October sowing, and 3) forage sucrose of P988 grown on Striga -infested soil at 3rd harvest of July sowing and at 1st and 3rd harvest of October sowing. Reductions in forage greenchop yield of P988 with successive harvests were accelerated by Striga infestations. The root dry weight was significantly greater from P988 plants grown from small compared to large seed. Delaying harvest of P988 to the maturity stage was associated with significant increases in number of open Striga flowers at 1st and 2nd harvest from October planting and in Striga shoot dry weight at 1st harvest of July and 1st and 2nd harvest of October planting. These increases were positively correlated with forage sucrose of P988. Results suggest that optimal forage greenchop yield on Striga -infested soil may be obtained from P988 plants grown from small seed and harvested at the boot stage.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the possibility of reducing energy input in giant reed (Arundo donax L.) as a perennial biomass crop, a field experiment was carried out from 1996 to 2001 in central Italy. Crop yield response to fertilisation (200–80–200 kg ha−1 N–P–K), harvest time (autumn and winter) and plant density (20,000 and 40,000 plants per ha) was evaluated. The energy balance was assessed considering the energy costs of production inputs and the energy output obtained by the transformation of the final product. The crop yield increased by +50% from the establishment period to the 2nd year of growth when it achieved the highest dry matter yield. The mature crop displayed on average annual production rates of 3 kg dry matter m−2, with maximum values obtained in fertilised plot and during winter harvest time.

Fertilisation mainly enhanced dry matter yield in the initial period (+0.7 kg dry matter m−2 as years 1–6 mean value). The biomass water content was affected by harvest time, decreasing by about 10% from autumn to winter. With regard to plant density, higher dry matter yields were achieved with 20,000 plants per ha (+0.3 kg dry matter m−2 as years 1–6 mean value).

The total energy input decreased from fertilised (18 GJ ha−1) to not fertilised crops (4 GJ ha−1). The higher energetic input was represented by fertilisation which involved 14 GJ ha−1 (fertilisers plus their distribution) of total energy costs. This value represents 78% of total energy inputs for fertilised crops.

Giant reed biomass calorific mean value (i.e., the calorific value obtained from combustion of biomass sample in an adiabatic system) was about 17 MJ kg−1 dry matter and it was not affected by fertilisation, or by plant density or harvest time. Fertilisation enhanced crop biomass yield from 23 to 27 dry tonnes per ha (years 1–6 mean value). This 15% increase was possible with an energy consumption of 70% of the overall energy cost. Maximum energy yield output was 496 GJ ha−1, obtained with 20,000 plants per ha and fertilisation. From the establishment period to 2nd–6th year of growth the energy production efficiency (as ratio between energy output and energy input per ha) and the net energy yield (as difference between energy output and energy input per ha) increased due to the low crop dry biomass yield and the high energy costs for crop planting. The energy production efficiency and net energy yield were also affected by fertilisation and plant density. In the mature crop the energy efficiency was highest without fertilisation both with 20,000 (131 GJ ha−1) and 40,000 plants per ha (119 GJ ha−1).  相似文献

The Egyptian clover ( Trifolium alexandrinum L.) commonly known as berseem in India, is a predominantly self-pollinated autogamous fodder legume. It has a simple valvular type mechanism for pollination wherein tripping agencies like bees are needed for better seed setting. The seed setting efficiency and seed yield of berseem (g. m−2) under natural tripping or open tripping condition was extremely high (22.38) as compared to completely caged (0.52) which clearly indicates the significance of pollinators/tripping agencies in seed yield of berseem crop. Further, the influence of pollinators was well marked with diploid strains of berseem as compared to tetraploid because of difference in fertility levels (tetraploids are generally less fertile).  相似文献

The aim of this work was to obtain mukifoiiare types of berseem clover with a great proportion of the leaf weight and increased plant weight. Thereby research an berseem clover over a 10 year period resulted in the transfer of the multicare gene(s) from a mutant plant of the monocut Fahl culrivar which possess such trait to the muiticut trifoliate culrivar Meskawi by crossing between them. A multicut multifoliate strain was developed after rune generations of selection.
The multsfoliate strain gave significantly higher dry forage yield than commercial cultivate Giza 10, Sakha 4, Giza 15, Helaly and Giza 6 by 22.1, 22.5, 24,8, 29.9 and 36.7%, respectively, in the first cut. On the other hand, the moltifoliate strain gave higher seasonal protein yield than cultivars, i.e. Helaly, Giza 10, and Giza 6 by 7.0,10.1, and 121 %, respectively.
The leaves/stems rario trait averaged over cuts was 18.3 % higher than for the five commercial trifoliate cultivars. Therefore, this multifoliate muiricut strain could be useful for forage especially before sowing cotton or other early summer crops. In addition to that, it could he used as a genetic marker for berseem breeders.  相似文献

Interspecific hybrids between white clover and the annual, profuse flowering ball clover have been developed as a strategy to improve the potential seed yield of white clover. The seed yield and seed yield components of advanced white clover × ball clover hybrids were compared with white clover in replicated field experiments over two harvest years. The backcross 3 hybrid had more reproductive nodes per stolon than the control variety ‘AberHerald’ which was reflected in more inflorescences per unit area but inflorescences with fewer florets and seeds. The hybrid had a greater potential seed yield than the control variety in 2002 but not 2001. Backcross 3 hybrids have also been produced across the range of leaf size categories. Medium and large leaved hybrids produced significantly more inflorescences and a higher potential seed yield than control varieties of comparable leaf size in both harvest years. The small leaved hybrid was not significantly greater than the control variety ‘AberDale’ in either inflorescence production or seed yield.  相似文献

The need to increase forage production for the growing livestock population in the Mediterranean region necessitates the evaluation of various promising forage species with respect to maximum herbage yield, optimum time for harvest and seed yield. Seven forage legumes, woolly pod vetch ( Vicia villosa subsp. dasycarpa accession 683), narbon vetch (V. narbonensis accession 67), common vetch ( V. sativa selections 2541, 2037, 2020), common chickling ( Lathyrus sativus selection 439) and ochrus chickling ( L. ochrus selection 104) were compared over two years with contrasting rainfall. In both years the entries were sown in November and their primary growths sampled periodically during growth. For each sample, phenology, total dry matter, leaf area index (LAI) and, at maturity, total dry matter, seed yield and harvest index, were recorded.
In both seasons, narbon vetch attained the highest dry matter and seed yields, and there was very limited variability in the maximum dry matter yield of the other entries. In general, the maximum dry matter occurred at 20–50 % podding in woolly pod vetch, 100 % podding in common vetch selection 2541 (local), narbon vetch and common chickling and at maturity in common vetch selection 2037, selection 2020 and ochrus chickling.
Throughout the vegetative to early flowering stages, woolly pod vetch had the highest dry matter yield and LAI. Possible uses of each species as animal feed are discussed.  相似文献

UK livestock agriculture can significantly reduce its protein imports by increasing the amount of forage based protein grown on-farm. Forage legumes such as red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) produce high dry matter yields of quality forage but currently available varieties lack persistence, particularly under grazing. To assess the impact of red clover persistence on protein yield, diploid red clover populations selected for improved persistence were compared with a range of commercially available varieties. All populations were grown over four harvest years in mixed swards with either perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) or perennial plus hybrid ryegrass (L. boucheanum Kunth). Red clover and total sward dry matter (DM) herbage yields were measured in Years 1–4, red clover plant survival in Years 3 and 4 and herbage protein (CP) yield and concentration in Years 2 and 4. In general, red clover DM yield in year 4 (3.4 t ha−1) was lower than in year 1 (13.9 t ha−1) but the red clover populations differed in the extent of this decline. Differences in the persistence of the red clover populations in terms of plant survival and yield were reflected in the contribution of red clover to the total sward yield in Year 4, which ranged from 61% for the highest yielding population, AberClaret, to 11% in the lowest yielding, Vivi. Increased red clover DM yield was reflected in a greater CP yield (protein weight per unit area), which ranged from 1.6 t ha−1 year−1 to 2.9 t ha−1 year−1 in Year 2 and from 1.1 t ha−1 year−1 to 1.9 t ha−1 year−1 in Year 4. CP concentration (protein weight per unit herbage weight) of all of the red clover populations was within a range considered suitable for ruminant production. The implication of these results for the future use of red clover in sustainable grassland systems is discussed.  相似文献

The effect of drought on the growth and development of bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.) was studied in controlled-environment glasshouses in the UK. There were three landraces (S19-3, DipC and UN from Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland, respectively) and two watering regimes; a control that was irrigated weekly to 90% field capacity and a drought treatment with no irrigation from 49 days after sowing (DAS) until final harvest (147 DAS). Bambara groundnut responded to drought by reducing the rate of leaf area expansion, final canopy size and total dry matter (TDM) during vegetative growth. Drought also caused significant reductions in pod dry matter (PDM), pod number, seed weight and harvest index (HI), leading to a decrease in final pod yield that was different between landraces. Across landraces, drought reduced mean pod yield from 298 g m−2 to 165 g m−2, representing 45% yield loss. Despite the reduction in all landraces, the mean pod yield across the droughted treatments that had received no water for almost 100 days indicated the resilience of the species to drought. The three landraces differed in their phenology; S19-3 exhibited a reduced phenology while UN maintained the longest life cycle. The different responses of the landraces reflect their adaptation to their local climates where mean annual rainfall ranges between 365 mm (Namibia) and 1390 mm (Swaziland). We discuss the significance of these results for future breeding programmes on bambara groundnut.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation was estimated by the difference method for two cultivars of berseem clover ( Trifohum alexandrinum L.), using annual ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum Lam.) as the control in field trials from 1983 to 1988. Five or six cuttings were obtained each year under supplemental irrigation, and dry matter production and uptake of nitrogen into harvested forage were measured.
Estimates of nitrogen fixation by berseem clover ranged from 272 to 400 kg N/ha depending on year and cultivar, while plant N derived from soil (based on N uptake by the ryegrass) ranged from 50 to 235 kg N/ha. Graphs of nitrogen fixed versus available soil nitrogen had a reverse linear-plateau shape with a plateau at lower soil nitrogen levels that broke sharply in a linear decline as available soil N surpassed a minimum threshold. Such a two-phase response suggests that nitrogen fixation by the clover was limited by soil N supply above this threshold and by other limiting factors at low soil N levels, perhaps genetic traits controlling carbon assimilation or environmental limitations other than nitrogen. Seasonal nitrogen process patterns showed abundant nitrogen fixation by the clover after it had depleted most of the soil nitrogen supply.  相似文献
