Two series of balance trials were performed with adult cockerels and with broiler chickens during their 5th week of life, and one with adult colostomised hens. The latter served to determine the digestibility of protein of the diet under test. All birds were fed the same diet with one exception: in the case of colostomised hens limestone (100 g/kg) was added before feeding. The main purpose of the experiments was to compare the Sibbald procedure for determining the so-called true metabolisable energy (TME) with apparent metabolisable energy (AME) or TME values obtained by applying a conventional addition method (CAM). The results showed that the Sibbald procedure was less precise than CAM. The Sibbald procedure delivered incorrect TME and AME values, the reason for this being the use of starved birds. This led not only to wrong intercepts but also to misleading regression coefficients in the regression equations used to calculate energy excretion on food intake. In CAM there existed no differences between AME and TME. This was not true for the Sibbald procedure, in which AME values differed considerably from TME values. Because of the errors inherent in the Sibbald procedure it is suggested that it should be replaced by CAM, in which several feeding inputs should be used.  相似文献

1. Two experiments were carried out to determine the heat production associated with food intake in laying hens allowed access to food for one (experiment 2) or two hours (experiment 1) daily. 2. In experiment 1, heat production in the fed state was measured for two successive days after 46 h of food deprivation. The rate of heat production in the fasting state was measured from 47 to 69 h after feeding. 3. In experiment 2, heat production was measured at 4 fixed food intakes: 100, 70, 40 and 0 g/bird. Heat production associated with food intake, eating activity, net availability of ME and maintenance ME requirement was estimated. 4. Heat production after 46 h of food deprivation did not differ from that after 22 h of deprivation. In the hens receiving 100 g of food, heat production reached the pre-feeding level by 20 h after eating; the hens with lower food intakes reached the pre-feeding level more rapidly. It is suggested that the heat production associated with feeding had been eliminated by 22 h after eating. 5. Heat production associated with feeding was 16% of ME intake. Because the total energy cost of eating activity was only 0.8% of ME intake, the heat production associated with food intake in the limited-access hens came mainly from the effects of digestion, absorption and metabolism of the ingesta. 6. The net availability of ME was estimated to be 0.84. The estimated maintenance ME requirement was 569.6 kJ/kgW0.75 d.  相似文献

1. The effect of 100 g rapeseed meal (RSM)/kg diet on the energy metabolism of hybrid laying hens was examined by indirect calorimetry. Thyroid hormone concentrations, thyroid weight, liver weight and body weight, egg production and food intake were also measured. 2. Fasting heat production was significantly lower in hens receiving RSM than in controls, but this difference disappeared when the birds were fed. 3. Thyroid hormone concentrations decreased, while thyroid and liver weights increased slightly; none of these effects was significant. Body weight, egg production and food intake were unaffected and no liver haemorrhages were noted. 4. The maintenance metabolisable energy (ME) requirement of control and treated birds, estimated from short-term energy balance measurements, was 474 kJ/kg0.75 d; net availability of ME in both treatments was 0.85.  相似文献

Methane production in goats given diets based on lucerne hay and barley   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An analysis of data from 102 energy balance trials carried out with Granadina goats, 32 with castrated males and 70 with lactating females, was made with the aim of establishing relationships between methane production and some nutritive attributes of the diet. The diets were based on pelleted lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay and barley and differed widely in the amounts and proportions of their ingredients. Methane production was measured by open-circuit respirometry. The between-animal variation in CH4 production was found to be +/- 8%. In absolute terms, CH4 production increased on increasing the intake of energy. The CH4 loss was 6.56 or 9.75 kJ/100 kJ of gross energy or digestible energy intake, respectively. The prediction of the CH4 production was best described from knowledge of the amounts of the "in vitro" digestible fractions (g/d) of both the neutral-detergent solubles (DNDS) and the neutral-detergent fibre (DNDF), according to the equation CH4 = 2.24 + 0.0299 DNDS + 0.0889 DNDF. The regression was highly significant and the residual standard deviation +/- 6.63 or +/- 20% of the mean. It was also found that on increasing the feeding level by one multiple of maintenance there was a reduction in CH4 losses of 1.51 kJ or 2.19 kJ/100 kJ of gross energy or digestible energy intake, respectively. The CH4 production (kJ/100 kJ of gross energy intake) was also related to the apparent digestibility of energy (D, %) determined at the level of nutrition close to maintenance. The equation was CH4 = -2.58 + 0.151 D. The regression was highly significant statistically.  相似文献

1. To improve the accuracy with which true metabolisable energy (TME) values of feedingstuffs are determined, a modification to the assay based on tube-feeding is proposed. 2. To ensure that the gastrointestinal tracts of the experimental birds are as empty as possible at the start of the assay it is recommended that the normal food is withdrawn 48 h before tube-feeding. 3. In order to partly alleviate the effects of starvation, all birds are given two doses of 25 g glucose (as an aqueous solution) about 40 and 16 h before tube-feeding. Birds, from which endogenous energy losses are to be derived, are fed 50 g glucose rather than given no food. 4. All birds are given 50 ml water by tube about 32 h after feeding to overcome any effects induced by low water intake. 5. A comparison of the two procedures with 8 feedingstuffs showed that the mean coefficient of variation was reduced from 5.5% to 1.5% for TME and from 4.7% to 1.8% for TME.  相似文献

Zero-activity heat production (HP), body temperature (Tb) and energy retention were measured in growing broilers maintained at 5 ambient temperatures (Ta) (14 degrees , 17 degrees , 22 degrees , 27 degrees and 32 degrees C) and at 5 feeding rates (ad libitum intake and 75%, 50%, 25% and 0% (fasting) of ad libitum). Zero-activity HP increased with decreasing Ta and increasing food intake. However, at 14 degrees C, zero-activity HP in birds fed ad libitum and 75% did not show further increase, but those in birds fed less than 75% of ad libitum increased rapidly. Results of the regression of zero-activity HP on Ta ranging from 32 degrees to 17 degrees C indicated that the slope was affected little by food intake, but the intercept decreased with decreasing food intake. Tb increased significantly with increasing food intake. There was little variation with Ta but, at and above 27 degrees C, a slightly increased Tb was observed only in birds fed ad libitum. Overall effects of Ta and food intake on HIF (% TME intake) were not found, but HIF tended to increase with decreasing food intake at 14 degrees C. Total energy retention and energy retention as fat decreased with decreasing Ta and food intake, although energy retention as protein decreased only with decreasing food intake. Results obtained here suggest that availability of TME is affected little by Ta ranging from 32 degrees to 17 degrees C and that HIF is utilised, in part, to maintain Tb at any Ta.  相似文献

Attempts were made to establish methods for indirect prediction of hemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibody titers to Newcastle disease virus (NDV) in sera of laying hens and day-old chicks by determining if these are correlated to HI titers in egg yolks. For this purpose, geometric means of HI antibody titers in sera from 60 hens, yolks from 60 matched eggs, and sera from 180 day-old chicks of an identical vaccination program were measured and plotted. There was a significant correlation between HI antibody titers in yolks (X) and hens (Y), with a linear regression of Y = 23.24 + 0.47X and a correlation coefficient of r = 0.65. The linear regression between HI antibody titers in yolks (X) and chicks (Y) was Y = 6.33 + 0.36X (r = 0.58). Immunity to NDV in hens and their offspring can be maintained effectively, and the proper time for the vaccination or booster can be determined by reference to HI titers predicted from the linear regression in the present study. The approach of testing egg yolk for HI titers provides a feasible alternative to determining HI titers from blood samples and eliminates stress in birds during blood sampling.  相似文献

1. Sexed broiler-type chicks were raised either under a continuous (CON) 23 h Light (L) and 1 h Dark (D) schedule or an increasing photoperiod (INC) consisting of an initial 6 h L and 18 h D which increased by 4 h L per week from 14 to 35 d of age after which a 23 L:1D was maintained to 49 d of age. 2. From 5 to 11 d of age birds were fed either: ad libitum (AL), energy intake (kJ ME) restricted to 9.414 x gBW0.67 (R1) or energy intake (kJ ME) restricted to 6.276 x gBW0.67 (R2). Food intake was ad libitum at all other times. 3. Food restriction reduced growth to 49 d of age although some compensatory growth did occur. Food efficiency was not significantly affected by restriction. 4. Although abdominal fat pad weight was significantly reduced for R2 compared to AL, this was not significant on a percentage body weight basis. 5. Adipocyte number in the abdominal fat pad was similar for AL, R1 and R2, but concomitant with a smaller fat pad weight, R2 showed reduced adipocyte volume compared to AL. 6. INC birds were lighter at 21 d of age, but body weights were equivalent to CON by 42 d of age. 7. Abdominal fat pad weight was some 10% larger at 49 d of age for INC birds. Adipocyte volume was unaffected, the increase in adipocyte being entirely caused by an increase in adipocyte number in INC birds.  相似文献

1. The influence of protein and energy self-selection on the reproductive performance of turkey hens was investigated. Large White turkey hens were fed on either a complete diet (185 g CP/kg, 11.30 MJ ME/kg) or were provided with a choice between a high protein-low energy diet (348 g CP/kg, 7.74 MJ ME/kg) and a high energy-low protein diet (81 g CP/kg, 13.39 MJ ME/kg). 2. Egg production, egg weight, and the fertility and hatchability of eggs produced were not significantly affected by the dietary treatments (P greater than 0.05). 3. While energy intake was not significantly different between groups, protein consumption decreased by approximately 40% (P less than or equal to 0.001) among self-selecting hens compared to hens fed on the complete diet. This resulted in a 10% (P less than or equal to 0.05) reduction in the food intake in the self-selecting birds.  相似文献

1. The yields of true metabolisable energy (TME) and net energy (NE) from chaya leaf meal and wheatfeed were mcasured in tube-fed cockerels. 2. TME, 5.76 MJ/kg, from chava leaf meal was lower than from wheatfeed, 8.39 MJ/kg. The total heat increment attributable to the feeding of chaya leaf meal was 1-7 times greater than that of wheatfeed. 3. The net efficiency of utilisation of ME (k) from chaya leaf meal was 0.64, while that from wheatfeed was 0.86. The role of different chemical composition, especially the high fibre content of the materials, is discussed. 4. The metabolisable energy and net energy values derived from chava leaf meal represented 0.34 and 0.23 respectively of its gross energy content. The combination of lower TME and lower net efficiency of utilisation led to chaya having a NE value, 3.86 MJ/kg, which was only 0.53 that of wheatfeed.  相似文献

1. Heat production, standing and eating activities, and hourly food intake of 4 laying hens were observed simultaneously and the effects of activity and food intake on heat production were studied. 2. Average heat production during the dark period (20.00 to 06.00 h) was 18.9 kJ/kgW0.75 h which was 33% lower than that during the light period. About 76% of the light-dark difference in the rate of heat production was probably associated with activity and posture. 3. Standing time, which included a range of behavioural activities, occupied 90% of the light period and the increased rate of heat production associated with standing was estimated to be about 18% of daily heat production. 4. Eating time occupied 40% of the light period; the heat production associated with eating activity represented about 5% of daily heat production or 3% of ME intake. 5. Because the regression of heat production on time spent eating agreed with the regression of heat production on hourly food intake, it is suggested that the energy expenditure associated with ad libitum feeding can be estimated for hens from the regression of heat production on hourly food intake.  相似文献

1. An experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of the addition of shark cartilage (SC) or chitosan (CH) to layer diets on egg component weights, yolk lipids and hen plasma lipids. 2. Hy-Line laying hens (80) were used during a 56 d feeding trial. Treatments were: basal diet (BD), BD + 20 g/kg SC, BD + 30 g/kg SC, BD + 20 g/kg CH and BD + 30 g/kg CH. Eggs were analysed on d 14, 28, 42 and 56. 3. Egg weight and egg component weights were not affected by these treatments throughout the experimental period. 4. After 14d of experimental feeding, cholesterol levels were higher in eggs from birds given BD + 20 g/kg CH and BD + 30 g/kg CH than in those from birds given BD. 5. Furthermore, eggs from hens given BD + 20 g/kg SC or BD + 20 g/kg CH were higher in palmitic and stearic acids and lower in oleic acid than those from birds fed on BD. After 56 d feeding, however, palmitic and stearic acid contents in eggs from hens given any of the supplemented diets were lower than in those from hens given BD, and oleic acid in eggs from hens given BD + 20 g/kg SC, BD + 30 g/kg SC and BD + 30 g/kg CH was higher than in those from birds fed on BD. 6. Plasma cholesterol and triacylglycerol levels were not significantly affected by dietary treatment. 7. Shark cartilage or chitosan at up to 30 g/kg in layer diets did not affect egg component weights (yolk, white and shell) and total lipid contents. During the period from 42 to 56d of experimental feeding, diets containing up to 30 g/kg chitosan reduced egg yolk contents of cholesterol, palmitic and stearic acids and increased the content of oleic acid.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary protein level on nitrogen retention and compare nitrogen metabolism in Lohmann Brown adult roosters and layers. The nitrogen maintenance requirement ( Nm ) was determined based on the nitrogen balance. Thirty Lohmann Brown adult roosters and 30 laying hens at 27 weeks of age were randomly divided into five groups of six birds per group. The birds were fed with one of five diets containing 10.46%, 11.77%, 13.79%, 16.77% or 18.29%of crude protein. Nitrogen intake, nitrogen retention and nitrogen retention efficiency were higher in roosters than in laying hens, and the average nitrogen retention rate for groups fed with CP level of 11.77%,13.79%, 16.77% and 18. 29% was improved by 9.14%. The nitrogen maintenance requirement for Lohmann Brown roosters and laying hens at 27 weeks of age were 0.4245 g/d and 0.5059 g/d, respectively, and Nm based on average body weight (BW) and metabolic body weight ( BW0.75 ) was 0.2364 g/kg BW and 0.2739 g/kg BW0.75 for laying hens and 0.2754 g/kg BW and 0.3208 g/kg BW0.75 for roosters, respectively. The regression equations for daily N gain ( NB, protein accretion) vs. daily N intake ( NI )for Lohmann Brown layers and roosters were NB =0.3743NI -0. 1589(R2 =0.79) and NB =0.6228NI -0.3151 (R2 =0.85),respectively. The results of this study indicate that nitrogen intake and nitrogen retention at the same dietary CP level were higher in roosters than in laying hens.  相似文献

1. Light hybrid hens between 32 and 68 weeks of age kept 4, 5 or 8 birds to the cage received one of three energy intakes, from a medium‐ or low‐energy diet.

2. Ad libitum fed birds laid more and heavier eggs than any of those restricted. A decrease in daily egg output of about 5 g was associated with each 100 kJ decrease in daily intake of metabolisable energy.

3. For the same energy intake, egg output of birds fed on the low‐energy diet was markedly greater than that associated with the medium‐energy diet.

4. The mortality of birds receiving restricted quantities of the medium‐energy diet was two to three times greater than that associated with similar rationing of the low‐energy diet.  相似文献

1. Effects of Ascaridia galli infection on the energy and nitrogen (N) metabolism were studied on groups of 5 cross-bred cockerels aged about 5 weeks and given a diet deficient or adequate in vitamin A at two levels of feeding in respiration chambers. 2. Metabolisability of dietary energy was 67% and N retention 33% in infected chickens compared with 71 and 41% respectively, in uninfected chickens. 3. Maintenance energy requirement of vitamin A-deficient birds was 882 kJ/kgW d compared with 998 kJ/kgW d for normal birds. N balance of the deficient chickens was also less when compared at the same energy balance. Infection did not affect maintenance energy requirement nor N balance. 4. Starvation heat production of infected chickens (619 kJ/kgW d) was higher than that of uninfected controls (586 kJ/kgW d). When infection treatments were combined, vitamin A-adequate chickens had a higher heat production (615 kJ/kg d) than the vitamin A-deficient (580 kJ/kgW d). Endogenous N excretion (mg/gW) was less in vitamin A-deficient than in adequate, starved birds. 5. Deficient chickens had undetectable liver reserves of vitamin A and only very low plasma concentrations. There was a difference in the length of larvae (17 d after infection) associated with vitamin A status, and with level of feeding.  相似文献

1. Sexed broiler-type chicks were raised either under a continuous (CON) 23 h light (L) and 1 h dark (D) schedule or an increasing photoperiod (INC). From 5 to 11 d of age birds were fed either: ad libitum (AL), energy intake (kJ ME) restricted to 9.414 x gBW0.67 (R1) or energy intake (kJ ME) restricted to 6.276 x gBW0.67 (R2). 2. Blood samples were taken at 4, 7, 11, 14 d of age and weekly thereafter to 49 d of age. Plasma thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and insulin were determined. 3. CON birds had elevated plasma T3 concentrations to 21 d of age, and greater plasma T4 concentrations at 11 and 21 d of age concurrent with greater food intake. Elevated plasma T3 concentrations in INC birds at 28 d of age coincided with lower plasma IGF-I concentrations at a time when growth and food intake were greater than CON birds. 4. Food restriction elevated plasma insulin and T4 but depressed plasma T3 and IGF-I. Plasma T3 was greater for food-restricted birds at 21 d of age, but subsequently, was generally lower than ad libitum-fed birds which may account for a lack of complete 'catch-up' in growth. 5. Plasma T3 was higher in females at 11 d of age when growth was equivalent for both sexes. From 28 to 42 d, when sex differences in growth became most apparent, plasma T3 was greater in males.  相似文献

This study determined the Pectoralis (P) major mixed muscle protein turnover (PT) in two meat broiler lines, Line A and Line B, during the finishing grow-out feeding period (21–42 days) as affected by the dietary metabolizable energy (ME) levels and ambient temperatures. Experimental finishing diets consisted of 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120% ME of recommended nutrient guidelines for energy level. Fractional synthesis rates (FSR) or fractional degradation rates (FDR) were measured in P. major at day 36 and 42. Protein and fat mass gain were measured, and respective energy retention efficiencies as protein and fat (EREp and EREf) were determined. Metabolic heat production (HP) was also reported. Experimental feeding studies were conducted in cool season (24 hr mean: 69.91˚F and 63.98% RH) and in hot season (24 hr mean: 77.55˚F and 86.04% RH). Results showed that FSR or FDR values were not affected by dietary ME levels at day 36, whereas reduced FSR (p < .05) were observed at day 42 fed diets with reduced ME levels (≤100% ME) which could have resulted from greater maintenance energy requirement of maturing broilers at that age. Broilers fed reduced ME diets (≤100% ME) maintained protein mass (equivalent to broilers fed ≥100%–120% ME) by reduced FDR and increased feed intake. Grow-out ambient temperature did not affect FSR or FDR values across ME levels. Line B retained higher protein mass, lower fat mass and greater HP compared to Line A. This was followed by higher feed intake in Line B. Further, Line B exhibited higher EREp and lower EREf across dietary ME levels. In summary, PT homeostasis and body composition changes in broiler lines studied seemed to be regulated by the birds’ intent to normalize energy intake as per physiological need by controlling feed intake.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of scavenging on diet selection and the comparative performance of Rhode Island Red and Fayoumi breeds of chicken. The breeds were compared under three feeding/management regimes: (1) a choice of ground noug cake and cracked maize, with confinement; (2) a choice of ground noug cake and cracked maize, but being allowed to scavenge for about 6 h; and (3) a commercial layer mash, with confinement. Scavenging did not change the pattern of diet selection. About 90% of the daily intake of both the confined and scavenging birds under choice feeding comprised maize. The efficiency of feed utilization and nutrient intake were also similar in these groups. The Fayoumi were more efficient in terms of feed conversion, although the egg production performance of the two breeds did not vary significantly. Scavenging hens had a significantly lower egg production than the birds under confinement offered a choice of feeds. Scavenging significantly increased the mortality in both breeds. In conclusion, scavenging affected the performance adversely and, despite the provision of a choice of feed providing a source of energy and protein, both the scavenging and confined birds on choice feeding failed to eat sufficient to meet their protein requirements.  相似文献

2 rearing trials were carried out on a total of 8550 hybrid chicks (White Leghorn) to investigate in which way food mixtures containing reduced levels of crude protein (supplemented or unsupplemented with amino acids) might influence the growth of chicks and young hens. Decreases from 21.5% to 16.5% in the crude protein content of chicken feed and from 15% to 13% in feeds feed to young hens (greater than 8 weeks of life) did not reduce the live weight of birds at the end of the rearing period to any appreciable extent. No clearly defined differences were found to exist between the different types of feed tested concerning the amount of food and energy consumed per unit of weight gain and the mortality rate among the birds; it was shown, however, that the demand for crude protein per unit of weight gain was clearly reduced in birds reared at the lower crude protein level. For young hens receiving the diet poorer in protein the date when the birds began laying was slightly delayed. Otherwise, no statistically significant differences were found to exist between the young birds fed varying levels of crude protein, concerning the age at 50% laying performance and other parameters that are characteristic of the entire laying period (laying performance, weight of individual eggs, food consumption, mortality, fertilization of hatching eggs, hatchability of eggs). It appears that the feeding of a reduced protein diet to chicks and young hens (laying stock) did not have any detrimental effect on the growth and later laying performance of the birds. Apart from the fact that the demand for protein feeds is considerably reduced during the rearing period the costs of feeding per bird can also be cut down.  相似文献

1. The aims of this study were to compare maintenance metabolisable energy requirement estimates obtained in laying hens by two methods of respiration calorimetry, to investigate the changes in the heat production and energy retention of laying hens associated with temporarily reduced energy intake and to demonstrate the errors caused by using inappropriate values of net efficiency of energy utilisation (k) when extrapolating to maintenance energy requirement from a range of energy retention values. 2. One of the methods used regression of a range of energy retentions on energy intakes, followed by interpolation of zero energy retention; the other method employed extrapolation to zero energy retention from a single level of energy intake and retention. 3. Maintenance energy requirements derived from the two methods were similar. There was no indication that repeated temporary reduction of energy intake for the regression method gave a reduced value for maintenance energy requirement. The main potential advantage of the single-point method is therefore rapidity. 4. The single-point method relies for accuracy either on fixing an energy intake near the expected maintenance or on having a very accurate value for k. For example, the error attributable to using an assumed net efficiency (k) value of 0.7 when the true value was 0.8 was shown to vary between 0 if energy retention was measured at the equilibrium point and about 70 kJ/kgW0.75 d, or +15%, if energy retention was measured in the fasted state. 5. Stability of heat production and energy intake was approached after 2 d of reduced energy intake.  相似文献
