Enterotoxemia caused by Clostridium perfringens type D in sheep is believed to result from the action of epsilon toxin (ETX). However, the sole role of ETX in the intestinal changes of the acute and chronic forms of enterotoxemia in goats remains controversial, and the synergistic action of other C. perfringens toxins has been suggested previously. The current study examined 2 goats that were found dead without premonitory clinical signs. Gross lesions at necropsy consisted of multifocal fibrinonecrotic enterocolitis, edematous lungs, and excess pleural fluid. Histologically, there were multifocal fibrinonecrotic and ulcerative ileitis and colitis, edema of the colonic serosa, and proteinaceous interstitial edema of the lungs. Clostridium perfringens type D carrying the genes for enterotoxin (CPE) and beta2 toxin (CPB2) was cultured from intestinal content and feces of 1 of 2 goats, while C. perfringens type D CPB2-positive was isolated from the other animal. When multiple colonies of the primary isolations from both animals were tested by Western blot, most of the isolates expressed CPB2, and only a few isolates from the first case expressed CPE. Alpha toxin and ETX were detected in ileal and colonic contents and feces of both animals by antigen capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. CPB2, but not CPE, was identified in the small and large intestines of both goats by immunohistochemistry. These findings indicate that CPB2 may have contributed to the necrotic changes observed in the intestine, possibly assisting ETX transit across the intestinal mucosa.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Growth factors (GF) are important for maintenance and repair of intestinal mucosal structure and function, but there have been no studies investigating growth factor (GF) or growth factor receptor (GF-R) mRNA expression in the intestine of horses with large colon volvulus (LCV). OBJECTIVES: (1) To determine mRNA expression for epidermal growth factor (EGF), EGF receptor (EGF-R), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF), IGF receptor (IGF-R), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF receptor (VEGF-R) in the intestine of horses with an LCV compared to normal intestine. (2) To measure the correlation between histological intestinal injury and mRNA expression. METHODS: In 5 horses, samples were collected from the mid-jejunum (small intestine, SI), pelvic flexure (PF) and right dorsal colon (RDC) prior to creation of the LCV (NORM), 1 h following creation of the LCV (ISCH) and 1 h following correction of the LCV (REPER). In 2 clinical cases of LCV, samples were collected from the PF and RDC. Samples were assessed histologically for the amount of intestinal injury. The mRNA expressions of growth factors and receptors were determined using qRT-PCR. RESULTS: VEGF and VEGF-R mRNA expression was greater in horses with an LCV compared to NORM. Expression of IGF-R mRNA increased in the SI during ISCH and REPER. CONCLUSION AND POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: The increase compared to NORM in VEGF and VEGF-R mRNA expression in horses with LCV may be important in early intestinal healing and may also explain, in part, the increase in vascular permeability in horses with a LCV. Expression of IGF and IGF-R in the SI warrants further investigation and may be important for understanding post operative complications in horses with SI lesions.  相似文献

Redgut is a condition of sheep characterised by sudden death. Post-mortem findings are reddened small and large intestines, which are usually displaced. Sheep are predisposed to the condition by a combination of circumstances, including a small rumenoreticulum because of the nature of the feed (usually highly digestible forage), and increased large intestinal size and function. To accommodate this, and because there is not a large rumenoreticulum to stabilise the gut position, the intestinal mass moves to an unstable position in the peritoneal cavity. Some unknown event precipitates a further change in intestinal position, resulting in accidental torsion of the intestinal mass, with resultant obstruction of the mesenteric blood vessels and death from shock. The condition can be prevented by careful attention to feeding regimes that prevent development of the predisposing feature of small forestomachs and an oversized large intestine, resulting in a displaced intestinal mass. This is achieved by intermittent grazing of dangerous pastures.  相似文献

We report a case of fatal respiratory and gastric herpesvirus infection in a vaccinated, adult cat with no known immunosuppression or debilitation. The disease was characterized by severe necrotizing bronchopneumonia, fibrinonecrotic laryngotracheitis, and multifocal necrotizing gastritis associated with eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies and a large amount of feline herpesvirus-1 antigen detected with immunohistochemistry.  相似文献

A 7-month-old sexually intact female Vietnamese pot-bellied pig was evaluated because of constipation. On abdominal palpation, a hard tubular structure was palpated in the middle of the abdomen. Abdominal radiography revealed loops of intestine that were markedly distended with ingesta, consistent with obstructive intestinal disease. On exploratory celiotomy, a massively distended cecum and spiral colon were found. A subtotal colectomy, with a side-to-side ileocolonic anastomosis, was performed. The cause of the megacolon was not discovered. The pig did well following surgery and eventually defecated normally following an initial period of diarrhea. To our knowledge, this is the first report of therapeutic removal of a substantial portion of the large intestine in swine. Our decisions concerning the pig of this report were based largely on our knowledge of megacolon in cats. The outcome for this pig indicates that subtotal colectomy along with removal of the cecum and ileocecal valve can be used to successfully treat idiopathic megacolon in Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs.  相似文献

The suitability of an agar-diffusion test (ADT) using toluidine blue deoxyribonucleic acid agar (TDA) for measuring DNase activity in pig intestinal contents was investigated. The ADT was compared with a spectrophotometrical method. Distinct metachromatic zones around wells in the DNA-containing agar, into which the intestinal content was applied, indicated DNase activity. The DNase activity was determined semiquantitatively by making serial twofold dilutions of the intestinal content. The spectrophotometrical method was optimal at pH 7.2. The ADT proved to be most sensitive at pH 5.6. The ability of the 2 methods employed to measure low concentrations of DNases was equal. However, the ADT was considered more suitable than the spectrophotometrical method because ADT measured reduced amounts of enzyme. DNase activity was demonstrated throughout the small intestine and in the large intestine. By the zymogram technique, at least 3 different DNases could be demonstrated in the lower parts of the small intestine, 1 of which could be of extrapancreatic origin.  相似文献

In ruminants large amounts of nucleic acids associated with the microbial cell mass leaving the fore-stomach system via the abomasum enter the small intestine. In dairy cows this amounts to 100-200 g microbial nucleic acids per day. These nucleic acids are very efficiently digested in the small intestine whereby nucleosides were found to be the main degradation products. Therefore, this review centers mainly on the mechanisms of intestinal absorption of nucleosides and their role in nucleic acid digestion. Furthermore, metabolism of nucleosides in intestinal epithelial cells and its bearing for nucleoside absorption and salvage of nucleosides for nucleic acid synthesis in various tissues is considered. According to own studies using isolated intestinal brush-border membrane (BBM) vesicles (BBMV) from dairy cows purine and pyimidine nucleosides are transported actively by two separate Na+ co-transport systems (N1 and N2) across the bovine BBM, whereby transport activity in the small intestine decreases from proximal to distal. Guanosine and inosine appeared to be transported exclusively by N1 while thymidine and cytidine appeared to be transported exclusively by N2. Uridine and adenosine had an affinity to both transporters. In comparison to findings in man and rabbit, transport capacity (Vmax) of N1 and N2 in the BBM of cows was more than 10-fold higher. Similar findings were obtained in BBMV isolated from the small intestine of veal calves with rudimentary forestomach development in regard to nucleoside transport. Therefore, the high intestinal transport activity for nucleosides seems to be a genetically fixed property in the bovine, which is not related to a functional fore-stomach system.  相似文献

An acute disease with high mortality occurred in the ostrich farm and characterized by depression, severe diarrhea and sternal recumbency. Four dead ostriches of the farm were submitted to the National Veterinary Research & Quarantine Service, and diagnosed as necrotic enteritis. In the gross and histopathological examination, extensive diffuse fibrinonecrotic enteritis was found in the small intestine, especially jejunum. Clostridium perfringens was isolated from a pure culture from the duodenum and jejunum of these birds. Based on our current knowledge, this is the first report of an outbreak of necrotic enteritis in the ostrich in Korea.  相似文献

Pasteurellosis was diagnosed in a red-fronted conure (Aratinga wagleri) that had been bitten on its breast by a cat 2 weeks before death. The wound spread rapidly, involving the skin over the entire breast and the underlying musculature. Septicemia that followed dermatitis and myositis was the cause of death. Pasteurella multocida was isolated in pure culture from the heart blood and liver. Diagnosis of Escherichia coli septicemia and enteritis in a hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) was based on lesions such as generalized hyperemia and hemorrhages in visceral organs, fibrinonecrotic lesions in the intestine, and isolation of E coli in pure culture from the heart blood, liver, and intestine.  相似文献

Objective —To determine if omentectomy would decrease the frequency of postoperative intraabdominal adhesions. Study Design —Retrospective study. Animals or Sample Population—44 horses that had either two ventral median celiotomies or a ventral median celiotomy and a necropsy more than 4 days later; 19 of these horses had their omentum removed at the initial surgery. Methods —Data retrieved from the records included location and type of intraabdominal adhesions; location of the surgical lesion; relationship of adhesions to the surgical lesion; surgical procedures; duration of initial surgery; time interval between procedures; age, gender, and breed of the horse; and clinical outcome. Fisher's exact test was used to evaluate the association between categorical explanatory and outcome variables. The effect of potential risk factors on the incidence rate of adhesion formation was estimated using a proportional hazards regression model. Results —Of 25 horses in the nonomentectomy group, 15 (60%) had postoperative adhesions that resulted in the need for a second surgical intervention, whereas of 19 horses that had omentectomy initially, only 4 (21%) had postoperative adhesions that required a second procedure. Rate of adhesion formation was higher in horses that did not have omentectomy initially (incidence ratio rate [IRR], 0.46; 90% confidence interval [CI], 0.18 to 1.19). At initial surgery, 24 horses had a small intestinal lesion, and 20 horses had a large intestinal lesion. Fifteen horses (63%) with small intestinal lesions subsequently developed adhesions compared with four horses (20%) with an initial large intestinal lesion (P= .006). At the second procedure, small intestine lesions were identified in 32 horses and large intestine lesions in 12 horses (1 horse had both small and large intestine lesions), and 1 horse had a gastric lesion. Adhesions were identified as the cause of colic signs in 19 (61%) horses with small intestinal lesions and in none of the horses with large intestine lesions. The frequency of adhesion development leading to colic associated with only the small intestine at the second surgery or necropsy was significantly greater (P= .001) than the frequency only in the large intestine. Conclusions —Omentectomy reduced the rate of postoperative adhesion formation. Adhesions are more likely to occur after small intestinal surgery and if they do occur likely involve the small intestine. Clinical Relevance —Omentectomy is a safe procedure and should be considered prophylactically for reduction of adhesion formation after abdominal surgery in horses.  相似文献

Two cases of fatal enteritis caused by Clostridium difficile in captive Asian elephants are reported from an outbreak affecting five females in the same zoo. Post mortem examination including histopathology demonstrated fibrinonecrotic enterocolitis. C. difficile was isolated by selective cultivation from two dead and a third severely affected elephant. Four isolates were obtained and found positive for toxin A and B by PCR. All isolates were positive in a toxigenic culture assay and toxin was demonstrated in the intestinal content from one of the fatal cases and in a surviving but severely affected elephant. PCR ribotyping demonstrated that the C. difficile isolates shared an identical profile, which was different from an epidemiologically unrelated strain, indicating that the outbreak was caused by the same C. difficile clone. It is speculated that the feeding of large quantities of broccoli, a rich source of sulforaphane, which has been shown to inhibit the growth of many intestinal microorganisms may have triggered a subsequent overgrowth by C. difficile. This is the first report of C. difficile as the main cause of fatal enterocolitis in elephants. The findings emphasize the need to regard this organism as potentially dangerous for elephants and caution is recommended concerning antibiotic treatment and feeding with diets containing antimicrobials, which may trigger an expansion of a C. difficile population in the gut.  相似文献

The intestinal tract of the white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simun) was dissected. We observed a simple structure for the small intestine, duodenum, jejunum and ileum, and a well-developed large intestine, cecum, colon and rectus. The cecum consisted of a small chamber, whereas the colon was much enlarged; notably larger than that of the domesticated horse, which belongs to the same order, Perissodactyla. This suggests that in the white rhinoceros the cecum may be functionally replaced by the well-developed colon which may act as the main fermentation tank in this animal.  相似文献

A gnotobiotic pig monocontaminated with an enteropathogenic Escherichia coli was subsequently hyperimmunized to produce a monotypic antiserum. At necropsy, multiple, air filled cysts were found in the wall of the large intestine. The etiology of this condition is still conjectural. However, select strains of E. coli may cause or contribute to intestinal emphysema in swine.  相似文献

Intestinal edema, luminal distention, and ischemia are common pathologic processes involved in producing the intestinal damage found during surgical exploration for acute abdominal disorders in the horse. The severity of intestinal edema depends on the degree of altered intravascular forces and changes in capillary permeability. Capillary hydrostatic pressure rises as the less pliable venules and veins become occluded during intestinal obstruction. Concurrently, the production of various endogenous products that damage the vascular wall leads to increases in capillary permeability and protein exudation, causing fluid movement into the interstitium and consequent tissue edema. The information presently available indicates that luminal distention does not produce the morphologic damage observed during natural conditions. However, slight intestinal edema was observed with experimental distention of the equine small intestine. Although the effects of increased luminal pressure appear minor, in the overall scheme of intestine damage, many processes are occurring together, and the luminal distention may be additive in the production of intestinal damage. The intestinal damage occurring during natural obstructions is most likely related to both the severity of the ischemia and the subsequent reperfusion injury. Experimentally, an ischemic insult produces a consistent sequence of mucosal alterations to both the equine small and large intestine. Severity of ischemia may be the limiting factor in determining the clinical outcome in cases in which the ischemic insult is irreversible; however, if the intestinal tissue survives the ischemia, the reperfusion injury may substantially increase the damage, producing an irreversible injury. The proposed mechanisms responsible for the reperfusion injury include the presence of highly reactive cytotoxic oxygen radicals. The intestinal epithelium and vascular endothelium are both capable of producing these unstable compounds. Secondly, the influx and activation of neutrophils may also release oxygen radicals. During experimental ischemia, neutrophils gradually move to the affected area; however, during reperfusion their numbers dramatically increase and may play a significant role in producing intestinal damage. Therapy for intestinal damage involves first determining the viability of the affected intestine. All nonviable bowel should be resected and viable intestine anastomosed. The care and maintenance of intestine of questionable viability are presently based on therapy in humans and experimental information concerning the pathophysiologic mechanisms of intestinal ischemia.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Morphological and immunological findings of three dogs with primary lymphangiectasia are described and compared with three normal dogs. Scanning electron microscopy showed distended and fused intestinal villi in dogs with intestinal lymphangiectasia, and morphometric evaluation revealed deeper crypts in the small intestine of dogs with intestinal lymphangiectasia. Although plasma cells of all classes were diminished in the cranial parts of the small intestine, there was an absolute and relative increase of immunoglobulin G-containing plasma cells in the caudal small intestine in dogs with intestinal lymphangiectasia.  相似文献

During August 2001, a syndrome characterized by acute lethargy and dyspnea was observed in a population of 45 lorikeets and lories in an open-air zoologic exhibit. The first death occurred on August 10, and within the next 12 days, nine more birds died (22% mortality rate). Hepatomegaly, reddening and congestion of the lungs, and injection of the serosal surface of the intestines were the common gross findings. Histologic changes, including fibrinonecrotic hepatitis and splenitis, bacterial emboli (liver, spleen, lung, kidney, proventriculus), pulmonary congestion and hemorrhage, and enteritis, were indicative of an acute, overwhelming bacterial septicemia. Salmonella typhimurium, with the same antibiogram, was isolated from four birds. Several birds had attacked and killed a snake on July 24, and Salmonella serogroup B (untypeable) was isolated from intestine and kidney samples of a garter snake caught in the open-air exhibit on August 28. Salmonella was also isolated from environmental samples of the exhibit but not from food preparation areas. After antimicrobial therapy, Salmonella spp. was not isolated from the surviving birds. The source of Salmonella in this outbreak remains unknown, but infection either directly or indirectly from snakes in the exhibit is possible. Contact between captive psittacine populations and reptiles should be avoided to prevent the risk of salmonellosis.  相似文献

To assess the safety of a potent muscarinic receptor antagonist (antimuscarinic) for human clinical testing, repeat-dose oral toxicity studies were conducted in the Beagle dog. Treatment resulted in unexpected gastrointestinal system effects that were likely mediated by the exaggerated pharmacologic effects of the antimuscarinic on intestinal motility. Dogs developed profound anorexia followed by severe bloody diarrhea, and at necropsy, the intestinal tract was distended, filled with red-tinged fluid, and the mucosa was reddened. Histologically, intestinal lesions consisted of severe epithelial necrosis and mucosal atrophy localized predominantly to the ileum and large intestine. Feces from dogs with diarrhea were culture-positive for Clostridium perfringens (CP), suggesting that CP might be the etiologic agent; however, the intestinal lesions were not consistent with histologic findings reported in dogs with hemorrhagic canine enteritis.  相似文献

The Salmonella sp. genus is identified in several species, and the zoonosis it causes is one of the most important types worldwide. The specifics of salmonellosis vary according to the function of the serovar involved, the species affected, age and predisposing factors. However, few cases of equine salmonellosis have been reported. This study presents ten confirmed salmonellosis cases in equines in southern Brazil. Six were adult animals with stress factors preceding the disease, while four were foals, three of which presented with hyperacute manifestations. The main clinical signs were diarrhea, anorexia, and hyperthermia. Lesions varied in distribution and severity, although fibrinonecrotic or necrohemorrhagic enteritis was observed in all animals, mainly in the large intestine (large colon and cecum—8/10) and small intestine (3/10). Substantial liquid content, mainly hemorrhagic, was observed in all animals. The most characteristic microscopic lesion was mucosa necrosis, which is often accompanied by fibrin deposition, followed by necrosis of follicular centers and vascular changes. Bacterial isolation revealed seven isolates. Five were serotyped, and the serovars Typhimurium and Anatum were associated with two cases each, while Muenster was associated with a case whose lesion pattern varied. Immunohistochemical staining was positive in all cases. All diagnoses were based on the clinical history, macroscopic and histological lesions, and the bacterial isolation and/or immunostaining associated with histological lesions.  相似文献

1. Morphological changes in the intestinal villi, cell area and cell mitosis number in the duodenal epithelial cells were compared in cockerels fasted for 1, 2 and 3 d, and also when refed for 1 and 2 d after 3 d of fasting, to demonstrate whether these morphological changes are related to intestinal function. Alterations in the fine structure of vacuoles in epithelial cells were also examined in each group to investigate whether the vacuolar changes are associated with these morphological changes, and to obtain an index for judging the nutritional condition of the chicken intestine. 2. Fasting induced decreases in villus height, cell area and cell mitosis number, which recovered rapidly after refeeding, suggesting that these parameters are related to changes in intestinal function and may be useful for assessing intestinal function. 3. At 1 d of fasting, small electron-dense bodies appeared in the absorptive epithelial cells, some of them fusing with each other. As the fasting period increased, these small bodies developed to moderate-sized nascent autophagic vacuoles containing various kinds of electron-dense contents and finally became large autophagic vacuoles with electron-lucent contents. Some vacuoles showed positive acid phosphatase reactions, which indicated that they were lysosomal autophagic vacuoles containing hydrolytic enzymes. 4. After 1 d of refeeding the large autophagic vacuoles seen after 3 d fasting rapidly decreased to the small electron-dense bodies seen after 1 d of fasting. 5. These findings suggest that intestinal epithelial cells have the ability to digest their own cell components to supply nutrients during fasting by means of lysosomal active autophagic transport mechanisms: after refeeding, the epithelial cells return to the absorption of nutrients. 6.The present results demonstrate that the autophagic vacuolar changes are correlated with changes in intestinal villus height, cell area and cell mitosis number induced by fasting and refeeding; this indicates that autophagic vacuoles are a useful index of the nutritional condition of chicken intestine. The greater the number of electron-lucent vacuoles there are in the duodenal absorptive cells, the lower the nutritional condition of the chicken intestine.  相似文献
