Benign stricture is an uncommon cause of chronic small intestinal obstruction in the cat. The purpose of this retrospective case series was to describe the ultrasonographic features, histopathological findings, and clinical presentation in a group of cats with benign small intestinal stricture. Inclusion criteria were cats presenting during the period 2010‐2017, and that had ultrasonography and small intestinal stricture confirmed at surgery. For each cat, clinical data and ultrasonographic findings were retrieved from the medical record, and histopathology, where available, was reviewed. Eight cats met the inclusion criteria. The location of strictures was duodenum (1/8), mid‐ to distal jejunum (4/8), and ileum (3/8). Ultrasonographic findings included gastric distension (8/8) and generalized (3/8) or segmental (5/8) intestinal dilation consistent with mechanical obstruction. Ingesta did not propagate beyond the strictured segment. Wall thickening was mild to moderate (3‐6 mm). Normal wall layering was disrupted in all cats. Strictures were predominantly hypoechoic (7/8) and associated with hyperechoic peri‐intestinal mesentery (6/8). Annular strictures (5/8) were less than 15 mm in length whereas long‐segment strictures (3/8) were greater than 15 mm in length. Histopathology showed transmural disease with fibrosis and inflammation (8/8), often (6/8) extending into the bordering mesentery. The mucosa was the most severely affected layer and epithelial injury accompanied the mucosal fibrosis/inflammation. Clinical presentation reflected delayed diagnosis of chronic bowel obstruction with debilitation (8/8), marked weight loss (8/8), and prerenal azotemia (5/8). Benign fibrostenotic stricture should be considered a differential diagnosis in debilitated young cats presenting with chronic bowel disease and ultrasonographic features of intestinal obstruction.  相似文献

A previously stranded 30-kg female green turtle (Chelonia mydas) was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of Florida following a 2-mo history of anorexia, intermittent regurgitation, decreased fecal production, and positive buoyancy of the right side. Radiographs confirmed gaseous distension of bowel loops suggestive of intestinal obstruction. The coelom was surgically approached through a plastron osteotomy, and a 540 degrees volvulus of the small intestine was identified and derotated. An intestinal stricture was present at the site of the volvulus, and segments of bowel orad to the stricture were greatly distended. Following resection of abnormal bowel, the osteotomy was stabilized using self-tapping screws and figure-eight wire, and the defect was sealed with fiberglass cloth and fast-drying epoxy resin. A leiomyoma associated with the focal stricture was identified by histology. Appetite and defecation returned to normal. Six months after surgery, the turtle had regained normal buoyancy and showed no further clinical signs of gastrointestinal obstruction.  相似文献

Rectal stricture with anastomoses of colon and/or small intestine to a spherical dilatation of the descending colon proximal to the stricture was observed in six swine. In three of these swine, feces bypassed most of the colon in passage from the small intestine to the dilated colon. Rectal stricture with an anastomosis of a loop of colon to the rectal stricture was observed in one pig where feces bypassed much of the stricture.  相似文献

An esophageal stricture was diagnosed in a 9-month-old quarterhorse by esophagoscopy and positive pressure contrast esophagography. Medical management and two attempts at surgical intervention were unsuccessful. The initial surgical technique used was a linear esophagotomy, mucosal resection and anastomosis, and closure of the muscular tunic, which resulted in a more severe stricture. The second surgical procedure was interruption of the stricture cicatrix by a single linear esophagotomy and primary closure of only the esophageal muscular tunic. This technique resulted in an increased lumen diameter, but failed to adequately resolve the stricture. Successful resolution of the stricture with return to a normal diet was achieved by a two stage repair using formation of an esophagostomy to stabilize the esophagus, followed by fenestration of the mucosal-submucosal cicatrix. Six months postoperatively, the horse was asymptomatic on a normal diet.  相似文献

A subtotal colectomy was performed on 12 normal adult cats using an interrupted apposing suture pattern of monofilament polyglyconate (n = 6) or a biofragmentable intestinal anastomosis ring (Valtrac, Davis and Geek Company, Danbury, CT) (n = 6) composed of polyglycolic acid and barium sulfate. Abdominal radiographs were made daily, beginning 10 days after surgery, to determine fragmentation rates of the anastomosis ring. The cats were euthanatized 30 days after surgery, and a gross and histopathological evaluation of anastomotic healing and stricture formation was performed. The technique for implantation of the anastomosis ring was easy to learn and required only two purse string sutures to complete. Intraoperative complications associated with the anastomosis ring were minor, and included problems with purse string suture placement, small serosal tears, and spasms of the colon that reduced the lumenal diameter. There were no intraoperative complications in the cats with sutured anastomoses. Postoperative recovery was uneventful in all cats. The anastomosis rings fragmented 12.2 ± 1.1 days (mean ± standard deviation [SD]) after implantation and passed in the stool 3.8 ± 1.9 days later without clinical signs in five of six cats. There were no statistically significant differences between the time required to perform the anastomosis ( P = .348), postmortem gross anastomosis grades ( P = .088), or percent of lumenal stricture ( P = .178) between the two groups. Histologically, the only significant differences were an increased muscular inversion in the anastomoses performed using the fragmentable ring ( P = .039) and an increased muscular eversion in the sutured anastomoses ( P < .001) compared with normal colonic architecture.  相似文献

A cervical esophageal stricture was corrected in a dog by creation of a traction diverticulum. Although abnormal esophageal motility persisted in the portion of the esophagus cranial to the stricture, the clinical effects of the stricture were ameliorated by the simple surgical procedure.  相似文献

A review of the literature on intestinal atresia of domestic animal species and humans was done. The 5 types of intestinal occlusions described in human infants are atresia type 1, atresia type 2, atresia type 3, stenosis, and the apple peel or Christmas tree deformity. The intestinal defects described in domestic animal species such as the bovine, equine and porcine are similar to those of human infants. The T-formation, an intestinal defect of the bovine resembling atresia type 3, and rectal stricture, an acquired intestinal defect of the porcine resembling stenosis, were described recently. Intestinal atresia is similar in several species and these similarities raise the questions as to whether the pathogenic mechanism and possibly etiologies of intestinal atresia are similar in these species.  相似文献

A diagnosis of congenital stricture of the vestibulo-vaginal fold was reached in an 11-year-old mare without previous reproductive records, during a breeding soundness examination. The mare had an annular stricture of the vestibule–vaginal fold that did not allow palpation or vaginoscopic visual examination of the anterior portion of the vagina. Endoscopic evaluation of both anterior and posterior portions of the vagina revealed a normal mucosa without scar tissue. Ultrasound examination of the cervix, uterus and ovaries did not reveal any other abnormality. The mare had a normal karyotype – 64 XX. Vestibulo-vaginal stricture or stenosis is a congenital anomaly that occurs when there is an incomplete perforation of the hymen or occurs in association with hypoplasia of the genital canal that results in the formation of an annular fibrotic stenosis at the vestibule–vaginal junction. To our knowledge, this is the first report of vestibulo-vaginal stricture in a mare with confirmed normal karyotype, 64,XX.  相似文献

This article reports a case of a one-year-old Quarter Horse filly with an enterocutaneous fistula resulting from an umbilical hernia since birth, treated successfully by en bloc resection of the hernial sac with the fistula and closure of the ileum with a modified Heineke-Mikulicz technique. This consisted of closing the intestinal wound transversely to the long axis after excision of the fistula to help preserve a sufficient intestinal lumen and prevent potential stricture formation after longitudinal closure. Umbilical hernias are reported to have an incidence of 0.5–2.0% usually resolve spontaneously. Reducible hernias do not represent a surgical emergency whereas incarcerations should always undergo surgery as soon as possible. Enterocutaneous fistulae occur uncommonly as a result of congenital umbilical herniae that developed spontaneously into Richter's herniae or Littré herniae or they are induced traumatically or iatrogenically after therapeutic attempts. In most cases, enterocutaneous fistulae do not require immediate surgery. However, the excision of the fistula should be scheduled within a few days after diagnosis. In the current case, the owner reported a healthy development of the filly after 1 year without any functional problems. This case represents an example of successful use of the Heineke-Mikulicz technique to establish an alternative to standard end-to-end anastomosis.  相似文献

An 8-year-old potbellied pig was evaluated for anorexia, decreased fecal production, signs of depression, inappetence, and abdominal distension. During hospitalization, a tooth root impaction and abscess were diagnosed, and abdominal radiography revealed severely distended, gas-filled large and small intestines. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a stricture of the proximal centripetal loop of the spiral colon and megacolon of the proximal portion of the spiral colon and cecum. A side-to-side spiral colon anastomosis was performed to create a partial bypass of the spiral colon. The success of this procedure suggests that spiral colon bypass is a treatment option for spiral colon stricture formation in potbellied pigs. Spiral colon stricture formation should be considered as a differential diagnosis in geriatric potbellied pigs that are anorectic, have abdominal distension, and have decreased fecal production.  相似文献

A ferret was examined because of anorexia, repeated episodes of regurgitation, and subsequent dehydration. Radiography had revealed a radiodense midesophageal foreign body. Results of endoscopy of the esophagus, however, could not confirm the diagnosis. Contrast radiography revealed esophageal perforation, with subsequent penetration of the foreign body into the right pleural space, causing pleural effusion. Surgical repair of the esophagus was performed, and a gastrostomy feeding tube was inserted to provide adequate nutrition during esophageal healing. Nine days after surgery, radiography revealed a severe stricture at the esophageal surgical site. Surgery was repeated; the esophagus was transected, the stricture was removed, and esophageal tissues were closed in 2 layers. Systemically administered antibiotics and gastrostomy tube feedings were continued throughout the post-operative healing period. The esophagus healed with a mild stricture that diminished over time in response to corticosteroid administration.  相似文献

This prospective clinical study evaluated the use, complications, and clinical and ultrasonographic follow-ups of end-to-end intestinal anastomoses with skin staples in naturally occurring diseases in canine small and large intestines. Intestinal anastomoses were performed in 14 dogs and pre-, peri-, and postoperative data were recorded. Postoperative clinical and ultrasound evaluations were performed at regular intervals for 1 year. The mean time taken to construct the anastomosis was 5 min. There were no intraoperative complications. Hemorrhage and colonic stricture were the main postoperative complications. Staple loss occurred in 2 cases. Absence of wall layering and focal wall thickening were observed in all cases at each ultrasonographic follow-up. Hyperechoic fat was observed in all but 1 of the cases at month 1. Nine dogs were alive with normal digestive function at the end of the study. The skin stapler technique enabled rapid construction of consistent anastomoses with inexpensive stapling material.  相似文献

An 11-year-old domestic shorthair cat presented with a six-week history of regurgitation following a dental procedure. Endoscopy identified a single oesophageal stricture in the cervical oesophagus. Stricture reformation occurred following endoscopic balloon catheter dilation on two occasions. Following a third balloon dilation a biodegradable polydioxanone self-expanding stent was placed across the stricture site. Following the implantation the cat was able to eat soft canned food orally without regurgitation. Fluoroscopic examination performed four months after placement indicated that the stent was no longer present and the cervical oesophagus was able to pass boluses of canned food with no signs of obstruction.  相似文献

We have reported tablet-induced focal esophagitis and esophageal stricture formation in cats. The proposed mechanism is thought to be abnormal esophageal tablet retention resulting in focal esophagitis with subsequent stricture formation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the passage of tablets and capsules when given alone (dry swallow) and when followed by a water bolus (wet swallow) to determine if this could, in part, explain the esophageal stricture formation we have observed in cats. Fluoroscopy was used to evaluate tablet or capsule passage after administration. The percentage of dry tablet swallows that successfully passed into the stomach was 0.0% at 30 and 60 seconds, 6.7% at 90 seconds, 13.3% at 120 seconds, 26.7% at 180 and 240 seconds, and 36.7% at 300 seconds. Wet tablet swallows successfully passed 90.0% of the time at 30 seconds, 93.3% of the time at 60 seconds, and 100.0% of the time thereafter. The percentage of dry capsule swallows that successfully passed was 16.7% at each time interval. Wet capsule swallows successfully passed 96.7% of the time at 30 seconds and 100% of the time thereafter. For each time interval, wet swallows achieved significantly greater percentage passage into the stomach when compared to dry swallows (P < .05). This study shows that tablets or capsules given by dry swallow have prolonged retention in the esophagus compared to those given by wet swallow. On the basis of this study, we recommend the routine administration of a water bolus to cats receiving tablets or capsules PO to facilitate esophageal clearance. This practice may help prevent medication-associated esophagitis or stricture formation.  相似文献

A three-and-a-half-year-old male neutered Siamese cat presented with idiopathic feline lower urinary tract inflammation and dysuria, which appeared to be caused by stricture of the urethral meatus. Wedge meatoplasty was performed, which relieved the cat's dysuria and restored a normal urine stream. To my knowledge, this is the first report of meatoplasty as a treatment for stricture of the urethral meatus in a cat.  相似文献

Candida albicans urocystitis secondary to urethral stricture and administration of antibiotics was diagnosed in a cat by fungal culturing of urine and examination of specimens. Surgical repair of the stricture and administration of 5-fluorocytosine resulted in resolution of the cystitis. Related problems included anorexia and severe weight loss, which necessitated enteral nutritional support, dehydration, renal disease, and nosocomial Pseudomonas aeruginosa urocystitis.  相似文献

Eleven cats required urethral stoma revision because of urethral stricture following perineal urethrostomy. At surgery, eight cats had evidence of inadequate dissection to the bulbourethral glands, and three cats had evidence of urine extravasation into the subcutaneous tissues. Following revision of the stoma, long-term follow-up was obtained in nine cases. For eight cats, owners reported no complications after the revision. Failure to dissect beyond the bulbourethral glands and inadequate mucosa-to-skin apposition resulted in postoperative stricture formation. Stoma revisions were performed a median of 71 days following the initial perineal urethrostomy, indicating that long-term evaluation of cases is necessary.  相似文献

An inverting, triangulated, stapled, end-to-end anastomosis technique was evaluated in the jejunum of four horses. None of the horses showed evidence of gastrointestinal disturbance after surgery; however, stricture and adhesion formation were pronounced in three animals examined 10 days, one month, and two months after surgery. The animal examined four months after surgery had no adhesions present at the anastomosis, and only mild narrowing of the intestinal lumen. Histologic examination of the anastomoses showed lack of a normal mucosal lining in some examined sections up to two months postsurgery. While mucosal and serosal continuity were eventually reestablished, this was not true of the muscularis, the ends of which were joined by fibrous tissue. Gaps in the staple line and malalignment of staples were present in the animal examined four months after surgery, indicating migration and/or loss of the staples from the anastomosis. The inverting, triangulated staple technique had little or no apparent advantages over previously reported results with similar everting techniques. The severity of adhesions observed with the inverting technique suggests that the adhesions observed with the similar everting technique may not be due solely to the everted nature of the anastomosis.  相似文献

We report use of esophagomyotomy and esophagopexy to create a diverticulum for relief of chronic type I esophageal stricture in 2 horses. After esophagomyotomy, the mucosa was dissected free from the muscularis for approximately 180 degrees around the myotomy. Then, the tunica muscularis of esophagus was sutured to the sternocephalicus muscle ventrally and the periesophageal tissues dorsally to create a diverticulum without disruption of the esophageal mucosa. Clinical signs of esophageal stricture were relieved, and the horses were fed normal diets without further esophageal obstruction.  相似文献
