Key message

Segregating stands and logs based on internal wood properties is likely to lead to improvements in value for forest and mill owners, but some situations were found where no segregation was the best alternative. Where segregation was the best alternative, segregating logs at the landing, or stands based on pre-harvest inventory assessments, led to the greatest value improvements.

Context

The benefits of segregating stands, stems and logs based on wood properties are not clear due to the high variability of wood properties, poor market signals for wood with superior properties and poor understanding of the costs across the value chain.

Aims

The aim of this study was to determine if the benefits of segregating stands and logs outweighed the additional costs.

Methods

A techno-economic model (SEGMOD) was constructed that allowed comparisons of segregation at different approaches in the supply chain. The model was populated with Pinus radiata (D.Don) stand, cost and price data from companies operating in four forestry regions of New Zealand. A total of 255 segregation scenarios were modelled, which included variations in segregation approach, stand type, stand location, terrain type, market focus and market horizon.

Results

Segregating logs based on internal wood properties led to improvements in stumpage and mill door value for most of the scenario sets evaluated. The No Segregation option was found (infrequently) to be best in unpruned stands. Segregating logs based on pre-harvest inventory assessments or at the landing would appear to be the best approach.

Conclusion

The economic benefits of segregating stands and logs for forest and mill owners outweighed the additional costs in most of the scenarios evaluated.

The intercropping system of tree with soybean in juvenile plantations, as a short-term practice, was applied at Lao Shan Experimental Station in Mao’er Shan Forest of Northeast Forestry University, Harbin, China. The larch (Larix gmelinii)/soybean (Glycine max.) and ash (Fraxinus mandshurica) intercropping systems were studied in the field to assess the effects of the intercropping on soil physicochemical properties. The results showed that soil physical properties were improved after soybean intercropping with larch and ash in one growing season. The soil bulk density in larch/soybean and ash/soybean systems was 1.112 g·cm−3 and 1.058 g·cm−3, respectively, which was lower than that in the pure larch or ash plantation without intercropping. The total soil porosity also increased after intercropping. The organic matter amount in larch/soybean system was 1.77 times higher than that in the pure larch plantation, and it was 1.09 times higher in ash/soybean system than that in the pure ash plantation. Contents of total nitrogen and hydrolyzable nitrogen in larch/soybean system were 4.2% and 53.0% higher than those in the pure larch stand. Total nitrogen and hydrolyzable nitrogen contents in ash/soybean system were 75.5% and 3.3% higher than those in the pure ash plantation. Total phosphorus content decreased after intercropping, while change of available phosphorus showed an increasing trend. Total potassium and available potassium contents in the larch/soybean system were 0.6% and 17.5% higher than those in the pure larch stand. Total potassium and available potassium contents in the ash/soybean system were 56.4% and 21.8% higher than those in the pure ash plantation. Biography: FAN A-nan (1972–), female, Ph. Forest certification is an issue that changes the forestry sector more profoundly than many governmental initiatives. Governments have taken quite different approaches across the globe and over time in dealing with the phenomenon. In most regions, they have seemingly switched to a ‘wait and see’ mode when confronted with the complex and fast-developing issue of forest certification. This paper explores the usefulness of economic theories to come up with recommendations on the role of governments. The approach taken is mainly based on ‘new institutional economics’ theories, especially on economics of information and related agent issues. Data collected from policy makers are used to compare theoretical positions against empirical findings (Werle, 1997). The paper shows that the economic theories applied provide rather clear indications on the role of governments. There are essential roles, such as ensuring compatibility with laws and international obligations. These have largely been fulfilled. Ensuring legal compliance, however, might well not be the only guiding function that governments should exert for the sake of market transparency, and thus market efficiency. That concerns both setting standards for forest management and roles in setting up and running private certification systems.  相似文献

To verify master curves obtained based on time–temperature superposition principle for wood–plastic composites (WPCs), a 220-day long-term creep test was conducted under an unconditioned environment. In this study, WPCs were made by extrusion with various formulations; using mountain pine beetle-attacked lodgepole pine flour and high-density polyethylene as raw materials, as well as maleated polypropylene as coupling agent. The results showed that the effect of naturally elevated temperature during the summer months caused additional increases in creep strain. The information obtained from the conventional creep study method may be insufficient to reflect the practical application. Comparisons between long-term data and the master curves showed that the master curves tended to overestimate the real creep strain of large specimens and that the deviation increased with time. The prediction of the master curve agreed more reasonably with the long-term data for coupled WPC products, whereas the master curves showed considerable overestimation for the uncoupled ones. In general, the master curves cannot precisely predict the long-term creep strain, but merely provide conservative estimations.  相似文献

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of organoclay platelet contents (0, 3 and 5 wt%) and polypropylene type (virgin and recycled) on the mechanical properties of polypropylene/wood flour composites. Composite samples were made by melt compounding and consequent injection moulding. The tensile, flexural and impact properties of resultant composites were determined. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of composites with 3 and 5% nanoclay content was also conducted. The results indicated that tensile and flexural properties of the composites increased with the addition of nanoclay particles up to 3 wt% and decreased thereafter. The impact strength of the composites, however, decreased with the incorporation of nanoclay. The mechanical properties of the recycled polypropylene-based nanocomposites were statistically comparable with those based on virgin polypropylene. XRD analysis revealed that the degree of intercalation in the nanocomposites containing 3% nanoclay was higher than in those containing 5%. Based on these results, it can be concluded that recycled polypropylene could be used instead of virgin polypropylene in the production of value-added products with no significant adverse effects on the mechanical properties.  相似文献

Sugi sapwood samples were processed with aqueous solution of acetic acid in order to find the response of the weight of sugi sapwood and the treatment of aqueous solution of acetic acid. The result showed that loss of weight for the treated sugisapwood was about equal to yield of extracts from sugi sapwood, and increased with the increment of the concentration of aqueous solution of acetic acid. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra changes of the treated sugi wood and extracts from sugi sapwood were analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopic technique. Increasing tendency of absorption intensities of the stretching vibration at 3 400 cm^-1 of hydroxyl group (OH) and C=C in lignin stretching vibration at 1510 cm^-1 of benzene ring inlignin were observed from FT-IR of the treated sugi sapwood. From FT-IR spectra of extracts from sugi sapwood by aqueoussolution of acetic acid, the dissolution of lignin was observed during the treatment with 30% acetic acid solution aqueous.  相似文献

To characterize the effects of plantation densities on the growth characteristics(diameter at breast level,tree height and volume) and the common wood properties,38-year-old Populus simonii 9 P.nigra clones planted with four levels of spacing(2 m × 2 m,3 m × 3 m,4 m × 4 m,and 5 m × 5 m) in a semi-arid area in northeastern China were examined.The results of ANOVA showed significant differences(P0.01) for all the investigated growth traits and wood properties under different plantation densities,except for the chemical composition of wood.The repeatability and phenotypic variations of all the traits varied from 0.34 to 0.99 and from 13.45 to 59.65%,respectively.Except for wood density,which was significantly negatively correlated with the growth traits,a positive correlation was observed between the growth traits and all the other wood mechanical properties.However,most of the correlations between the growth traits and the chemical composition of the wood were not significant.The path analysis for the wood mechanical characteristics and the growth in the prediction of volume were significant and ranged from 0.18 to 0.72 for wood density and diameter at breast height,respectively,while those for the chemical composition of wood ranged from 0.001 to 0.336,which showed a low impact on the volume.The highest stand volume(610 m~3) per hectare was observed with the 2 m × 2 m spacing,which consequently provided a high total price and income,while a high individual volume growth per tree was observed with the 5 m × 5 m spacing.The results suggested that for the poplar trees younger than 40 years in a semi-arid area in China,2 m × 2 m spacing is suitable for obtaining a high volume per hectare,while 5 m × 5 m spacing is best for obtaining a high individual volume per tree.  相似文献

This synthesis paper presents a model for estimating the buildup of soil organic matter in various types of coniferous forests. The knowledge used was obtained from a well‐studied forest with good Iitterfall data, decomposition information and validation measurements of the soil organic matter layer. By constructing a simple model for litterfall, and the information on maximum decomposition levels for litter, we could estimate the annual increase in soil organic matter and extend this to encompass stand age. The validation measurement and the estimated amount of soil organic matter differed by about 8 or 26% over a 120‐yr period, depending on the litterfall model. The estimated increased storage of soil organic matter as a consequence of climate change was found to be drastic. We thus found that the soil organic matter layer would grow about four times as fast as a result of the needle component only. This estimate was based on a comparison between latitudes with a difference of 17°.  相似文献

Aims

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that heavy predation of fallen fruits reduces the predation of neighboring post-dispersed seeds.

Methods

We performed a seed/fruit removal cafeteria experiment to assess the effects of seed species, of fruit species, and of density of fallen fruits on seed predation by wood mice (Apodemus sp.). In total, 6,930 seeds and 9,660 fruits from seven species were used. A generalized linear mixed model procedure was used to test these effects.

Results

Seed predation was significantly affected by the species of both seeds and neighboring fruits, but not by their density. Multiple comparison tests showed that most of treatments tested had no significant effects of species and density of neighboring fruits on seed removal. However, seed removal was significantly lower in some treatments with fruits than in the treatments without fruits for one of the seven seed species tested. Seed removal of two species tested was significantly differed among some treatments with different fruit species.

Conclusion

Most of the results in this study do not support our overall hypothesis. However, a part of results supported our hypothesis, suggesting that seed removal is affected by complex interactions between the preference of wood mice for fruits and fruiting environment.  相似文献

The volatile oil of the wood of Cedrus deodara (50 and 100 mg/kg, p.o.) produced a significant inhibition of compound 48/80 and nystatin-induced rat paw edema. It also inhibited heat- as well as hypotonic solution-induced haemolysis of erythrocytes in vitro. The anti-inflammatory activity of the oil could be due to its membrane stabilizing action.  相似文献

A new visual inspection method for the classification of wooden plates used in pencil manufacturing is presented. Darker regions in wooden plates indicate the presence of growth rings which are regions of hard wood. Pencils manufactured with these plates are more difficult to sharpen and have a tendency to bend and crack; therefore, these plates are classified as not being adequate for pencil manufacturing. The proposed method is based on the extraction and analysis of the features of the wooden plates using gray level images. The method classifies the plates using the results obtained by an automatic threshold determination based on Shannons entropy. The method was idealized aiming at low computational complexity, i.e., algorithm calculations involving only simple operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division which could be implemented in hardware using VLSI technology or programmable logic devices. The wooden plate is mapped in an optimal number of regions; each region is pre-classified considering some relevant features based on the entropy gray level distribution of the pixels. Information from all regions is combined based on heuristic decision rules, arriving in a pre-classification stage where the regions are labeled in four classes (A, B, C and X). Two decision algorithms have been investigated for the final classification: one based in a co-occurrence matrix considering only a uni-directional horizontal neighborhood of the regions and the second is based on a heuristic method of information reduction considering combinations of the pre-classified regions. The final results obtained by the two algorithms were compared with the classification made by a human expert, demonstrating that the proposed method had very good performance.  相似文献

The failure behavior of wood with a short crack was examined by conducting the single-edge-notched bending tests of a radial-longitudinal system on Agathis specimens. In the test, the mode I critical stress intensity factor was measured, and its validity was checked by the result from double cantilever beam testing method. The mode I critical stress intensity factor decreased when the crack length approached zero. With crack length correction, a constant critical stress intensity factor was obtained over a wide range of crack length including crack-free specimen.  相似文献

Pinus radiata D. Don, native to a Californian coastal environment, has been introduced to many parts of the world as an exotic species for afforestation. It is now a major plantation species in the Southern Hemisphere. In 1990, it was introduced to the heavily degraded, dry Min river valley area in Aba prefecture of Sichuan Province, P. R. China. Survival and growth of young trees planted at several sites appear to be reasonable. This review is to serve as an introduction to the large body of literature on P.radiata for forest scientists in China. It covers the following aspects: P. radiata in its native environment and in ex situ plantations,provenance and genetic variations, environmental limitations and climate niche, diseases and pests, lessons from unsuccessful introductions, and the use of P. radiata for ecological restoration. The early growth of P. radiata planted in the dry river valley area is briefly described. Potential problems associated with the introduction of P. radiata in Aba and future research needs are also identified.  相似文献

Old provenance experiments with Scots pine and Norway spruce in Finland were used for assessing the long‐term effects of the projected climatic change on forest trees. The northernmost origins showed an increase in wood production when transferred southwards into a climate with an annual mean effective temperature sum close to that which is expected in northern areas as a result of the projected climatic change. A model is constructed with the estimated changes in wood production as a function of the annual mean temperature sum at the original location and the change in the annual mean temperature sum caused by the geographical transfer. The major changes in wood production are expected to occur in the northernmost areas of tree growth.  相似文献

The attacks of bark‐ and wood‐boring Coleoptera on broken conifer stems after severe snow‐breakage in early 1988 were studied in autumn 1988 and 1989. The study included twelve stands in the county of Värmland in central Sweden differing in age and edaphic conditions. The tops on the ground as well as the remaining rooted stem stumps of 94 Picea abies and 61 Pinus sylvestris were inspected. The presence of living branches on the stumps strongly influenced the incidence of insect attack. All stumps without branches were attacked during the two‐year period, whereas only a few spruce stumps with more than ten branches and no pine stumps with more than five branches were attacked. On spruce stumps, the most frequently encountered Coleoptera were all scolytids, i.e. the species Pityogenes chalcographus, Hylurgops palliatus, and the genera Polygraphus, Dryocoetes, and Trypodendron. On pine stumps, Tomicus piniperda was the most common species. Most of the spruce tops and virtually all pine tops were attacked during the two‐year period, and most of these attacks occurred during the first summer. P. chalcographus, Dryocoetes, and weevils of the genus Pissodes were the most frequent Coleoptera on spruce tops. On pine tops, the dominant insects belonged to the genera Pissodes and Pityogenes.  相似文献
