Erratum

In Table 1 of the report "Monoclonal antibody to Thy-1 enhances regeneration of processes by rat retinal ganglion cells in culture" by D. Leifer et al. (20 Apr., p. 303), the unit of measurement, micrometers, was omitted in the third column, "Mean length of processes per cell."

In the report "Sequence of 16S ribosomal from Halobacterium volcanii, an archaebacterium" by R. Gupta et al. (12 August, p. 656), the last sentence of the abstract should read: "Since the H. volcanii sequence is closer to both the eubacterial and eukaryotic sequences than these two are to one another, it follows that the archaebacterial sequence is more like the common ancestral sequence than at least one of the other two versions." Also, the sentence beginning on line 6, column 3, page 658, should read: "Although the root of this tree cannot be determined, the data demand that the archaebacterial version be closer to the ancestral version common to all than are one or both of the other two versions."

In the reply to the technical comments of E. H. Hall and E. A. C. Crouch by J. L. McNichols, Jr., et al. (13 June, p. 1293), the last sentence of the second paragraph was printed incorrectly. It should have read, "We maintain that f depends on the system design and is not limited by fundamental thermodynamic considerations to 1/20 [the value obtained by Hall for the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) Rankine system]. However, the OTEC Rankine system does provide a baseline...."

In our paper "Pantothenic Acid in Copper Deficiency in Rats" (Science, 1950, 111, 472), in the last sentence of the second paragraph on page 473, the daily administered dose mentioned should be "0.1 microg of copper" and not "1.1 microg" as printed.

The proportion of dogs among animals used in research was incorrectly reported in Constance Holden's article "Billion dollar price tag for new animal rules" (News & Comment, 4 Nov., p. 662). Dogs make up about 1% of research animals, according to the Office of Technology Assessment. Primates make up about 0.05%.

In the letter from Keith Bowker concerning journal price increases (30 Oct., p. 597), two conversion rates referred to in the Sixth paragraph were incorrect. The rates should have been $1.69 per pound1 and $1.67 per pound1, respectively.

In the report "A candidate magnetic sense organ in the yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares" by M. M. Walker et al. (18 May, p. 751), the standard error given on page 752 (3rd column, first full paragraph) for the sizes of the magnetite particles was instead the standard deviation. Use of the term "standard error" implies a far greater variance in the sizes of the particles than actually existed and could lead to the conclusion that the published electron micrograph is not typical but presents a biased sample of the particles.

The fourth sentence of the abstract of the report "The elav gene product of Drosophila, required in neurons, has three RNP consensus motifs" by S. Robinow et al. (16 Dec., p. 1570), should have read, "DNA sequence data presented in this report suggest that the elav gene product is an RNA binding protein, based on the presence of RNP (ribonucleoprotein) consensus sequences."

In the report "Cloning and expression of a cocaine-sensitive dopamine transporter complementary DNA" by S. Shimada et al. (25 Oct., p. 576), three amino acids were inadvertently omitted in figure 1. A tyrosine (Y) should have been at position 156 so that phenylalanine (F) and asparagine (N) were at 155 and 157, respectively; a cysteine (C) should have been at position 242 so that alanine (A) and leucine (L) were at 241 and 243, respectively; and a proline (P) should have been at position 272 so that methionine (M) and Y were at 271 and 273, respectively.

In the Technical Comment "Trans-activator gene of HTLV-II: Interpretation" by W. C. Greene et al. (27 Feb., p. 1073), the third-from-the-last sentence should have read, "In addition, using Jurkat or other T-cell lines, Inoue and colleagues (2) and Maruyama et al. (3) have described activation of both the IL-2 receptor and IL-2 genes by the tat-I gene isolated from HTLV-I, which shares similar structural and functional properties with the tat-II gene." Reference 3 should have been to M. Maruyama et al., cell 48,343(1987).

A line was inadvertantly omitted from the last sentence of George S. Mumford's letter of 20 January (p. 238). It should have read, "If, at an early stage, we could foster in this manner a feeling among our graduates of their indebtedness to the general public for directly or indirectly supporting their research and the right of that public to know the results, it might become traditional for them to proceed in such a way throughout a career."
