Seventy-five double-muscled cattle of the Belgian white and blue breed, two days to 50 months old and weighing 45 to 680 kg, were investigated. Transpulmonary pressure changes, measured with an oesophageal balloon, variations of air flow and volume at the mouth were obtained during spontaneous breathing to calculate pulmonary function data. Oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions in arterial blood were also recorded. Growth related changes of the pulmonary function values were similar to those observed in other bovine breeds. Total pulmonary resistance, specific total pulmonary resistance, viscous work, power of breathing, specific viscous work, respiratory frequency and peak-to-peak change in transpulmonary pressure were greater in Belgian white and blue cattle than in Friesian cattle. In the former, tidal volume, specific tidal volume, lowest transpulmonary pressure during expiration, transpulmonary pressure at the functional residual capacity level, dynamic lung compliance and oxygen tension in arterial blood were smaller. Airflow, minute volume and carbon dioxide tension in arterial blood were similar in the Belgian white and blue and Friesian cattle. These results were related to the great sensitivity of double-muscled cattle of the Belgian white and blue breed to laryngitis and bronchopneumonia.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate and quantify respiratory mechanical dysfunctions in Standardbred horses with both poor performance and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid cytology characteristic of inflammatory airway disease (IAD). A control group of healthy Standardbred horses was compared. Respiratory mechanics and breathing pattern were examined at rest and during hyperventilation induced using a rebreathing method. At rest, respiratory mechanics and breathing pattern were superimposable in both groups. In IAD horses, rebreathing increased ventilation, with larger tidal volumes and lower respiratory frequencies. During hyperventilation, IAD animals showed frequency-dependent dynamic lung compliance, and had greater viscous lung resistance and rate of dynamic work of breathing. As IAD alters pulmonary mechanics, the ventilatory load increases and horses requiring significantly higher energy for breathing may suffer restrictions in their athletic performance. This rebreathing method permits early evaluation of respiratory mechanical dysfunction in poorly performing horses with sub-clinical IAD.  相似文献

In order to better understand the bovine breathing pattern, tidal breathing flow-volume loops (TBFVL) were analyzed in 24 healthy cattle of different body weights (range: 37–660 kg) (Group A) and in 28 cattle suffering from the common respiratory diseases: verminous bronchitis (Group B); shipping fever (Group C); acute respiratory distress syndrome (Group D); respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia (Group E); organophosphate poisoning (Group F); and necrotic laryngitis (Group G).Respiratory airflow and tidal volume were measured with a breathing mask-Fleisch pneumotachograph assembly. TBFVL were traced from these values using a computerized method. All the loop indices proposed by Amis and Kurpershoek (1986a) were calculated from 5 representative breathing cycles for each of the 52 animals. The TBFVL shapes and indices were relatively constant in most healthy cattle and were not correlated with the body size. When compared to normal values, animals with moderate respiratory syndromes (Groups B and C) had a more flattened shape to their TBFVL. On the other hand, in most cattle with severe respiratory pathologies (Groups D, F and G) expiration tended to be biphasic with the peak expiratory flow (PEF) occurring significantly later than in healthy animals. Both PEF and peak inspiratory flow were increased in all the pathological conditions. The TBFVL indices were more frequently and more severely changed during expiration than during inspiration.  相似文献

Clinical and pulmonary function changes induced by intravenous dichlorvos (2,2-dichlorvinyldimethyl phosphate) (DDVP) toxicosis, and reversibility of these changes after atropine treatment were investigated in six Friesian calves one to three months old. From one minute after dosage, all animals showed severe respiratory distress, excitation, weakness, muscle fasciculation and cholinesterase inhibition. Decrease in dynamic lung compliance and arterial oxygen tension and increase in total pulmonary resistance, viscous work of breathing and alveolar arterial oxygen gradient were highly significant (P less than 0.01). On the other hand, body secretions, heart rate, respiratory rate, tidal volume and arterial carbon dioxide tension were not significantly affected by DDVP injection. Atropine promptly and completely reversed these changes, except for muscle fasciculations, central depression and cholinesterase inhibition which disappeared progressively within 24 hours.  相似文献

Clinical and physiologic investigations were done weekly in 5 nonsedated Friesian calves before, during, and after an induced infection with Dictyocaulus viviparus infective larvae. Clinical, hematologic, serologic, and parasitologic findings were all compatible with the classic picture of moderate subacute verminous bronchitis. Most pulmonary function values revealed significant (P less than or equal to 0.05) changes in the 2nd or 3rd week after inoculation and maximal changes at 5 weeks after inoculation. Most marked changes included a decrease in tidal volume, dynamic lung compliance, and arterial oxygen tension, and an increase in minute ventilation, minute viscous work of breathing, and alveolar-arterial oxygen difference. Minute ventilation, dynamic lung compliance, minute viscous work of breathing, and PaO2 revealed the most homogeneous change. Conversely, maximal change of intrapleural pressure, total pulmonary resistance, and viscous work of breathing had higher variability from week to week.  相似文献

Growth-related changes in pulmonary function values were investigated in 20 healthy French Alpine goats, aged between 20 and 550 days, weighing 7–55 kg. Pulmonary ventilation, mechanics of breathing and arterial oxyten tension were measured using standardized techniques and methods adapted for goats of different body sizes. The Ppl values and the tI/tTOT ratio showed no significant changes with age and body size. The ventilation values (Vt, Ve, mVI and mVE) increased linearly with growth. There was a significant correlation of age and body weight with dynamic lung compliance (Cdyn), total pulmonary resistance (RL), viscous work of breathing (Wvis tot) and minute viscous work (Wvis min) throughout the age range studied. Cdyn, Wvis tot and Wvis min increased and RL decreased with age and body weight. Arterial blood gases (PaO2 and PaCO2) did not show significant changes over the age range studied. Regression equations for each pulmonary function parameter are given with body weight as the independent variable. Data for the mechanics of breathing were compared with those elsewhere for cattle, horses, man and dogs.  相似文献

Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease (HARD) is a pulmonary syndrome that results from the vascular and parenchymal inflammatory response associated with the arrival and death of Dirofilaria immitis in the distal pulmonary arteries. Barometric whole-body plethysmography (BWBP) is a non-invasive pulmonary function test (PFT) that allows a dynamic study of breathing patterns and is useful to study airway disease and the response to different treatments. The aim of this prospective non-blinded study was to compare respiratory function variables between healthy cats and HARD cats (seropositive to D. immitis) by use of BWBP. Twenty-five healthy cats and six HARD cats were put into the plethysmograph chamber and different respiratory variables were measured. The results were analyzed and compared between the two groups of animals. There were significant differences for bronchoconstriction index variables Pause (P-value<0.001) and enhanced pause (P-value<0.001), minute volume (P-value<0.05) and tidal volume (P-value<0.05) between healthy and HARD cats. There were no significant differences in respiratory rate and inspiratory and expiratory times between both groups of animals. The results obtained in our study support that HARD cats show significant differences in pulmonary function variables obtained by BWBP due to an acute inflammatory response at bronchial, vascular and parenchymal level. This PFT could be a useful method to facilitate the diagnosis of pathological states of bronchoconstriction in HARD cats.  相似文献

Similar clinical signs have been reported in calves infected either by Dictyocaulus viviparus or bovine respiratory syncytial virus. Three experiments were carried out to establish the clinical picture and the course of the disease in animals with these infections. The clinical signs of calves infected with lungworm included coughing, nasal discharge, tachypnoea, abdominal breathing and pyrexia, and auscultation of their lungs revealed increased bronchial sounds. Similar signs were also observed after infection with bovine respiratory syncytial virus, but the signs were more acute and resolved more rapidly than in animals infected with lungworm larvae. Calves infected with lungworm had more serious clinical signs after infection with bovine respiratory syncytial virus than calves, which were not infected with lungworm.  相似文献

Pulmonary function values were measured in five Friesian calves of five months of age during the patent phase of an experimental moderate lungworm infection and were compared with the pulmonary function values recorded in four control animals. All the nine calves were free of any previous challenge with Dictyocaulus viviparus and were submitted to the same standardized conditions of body conformation, housing, feeding and procedures for pulmonary function testing. A significant increase of respiratory rate, minute ventilation, total pulmonary resistance and power of breathing and a significant decrease of tidal volume, dynamic lung compliance and PaO2 were observed in the infested animals. The absolute intrapleural pressure values were also significantly more negative. The conclusions of the statistical analysis were almost identical when predicted instead of measured pulmonary function values were used in the control group. The clinical, functional and pathological findings in the infested animals were all consistent with the picture of a lower airway obstructive disease.  相似文献

This study was aimed at evaluating the pathophysiology of pulmonary dysfunctions and inflammatory consequences of an acute respiratory chlamydial infection induced experimentally in conventionally raised pigs (aged 39-44 days). Eight animals were exposed to Chlamydia suis (C. suis) and four non-infected animals served as controls. The total observation period was from seven days before challenge to seven days post exposure. While non-infected control pigs did not exhibit any clinical symptoms, animals exposed to C. suis developed fever and were severely respiratory distressed within the first week after exposure. After C. suis infection, pulmonary dysfunctions were characterised by a significant decrease in the diffusion capacity of the lung (i.e. transfer factor of the lung for carbon monoxide; TL CO), a significant increase in the functional residual capacity (FRC), and significant changes in the pattern of ventilation (respiratory rate increased while the tidal volume decreased). In exhaled breath condensate (EBC), leukotriene B(4) (LTB(4)) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) showed a tendency to increase after infection. In the broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of C. suis infected pigs, the activity of matrix metalloprotease 9 (MMP-9) was found to be increased compared to controls. BALF cytology was characterised by increased numbers of granulocytes and activated lymphocytes. Pulmonary inflammation in infected pigs was confirmed by post mortem histology. A prominent dissemination of chlamydial bodies in the lung was accompanied by an influx of macrophages, granulocytes and activated T-cells. Data obtained in this study provide new insight into the pathogenesis of acute respiratory chlamydial infections in pigs.  相似文献

Vagal afferent activities and respiratory reflexes during drug-induced bronchoconstriction were studied in 31 anesthetized, spontaneously breathing or artificially ventilated guinea pigs. Histamine (5, 10, 20 micrograms/kg), ACh (10, 20, 40 micrograms/kg) and endothelin-1 (2 micrograms/kg) were intravenously injected to the animals in order to induce the bronchoconstriction. In spontaneously breathing and vagi intact animals, a considerable respiratory change characterized by rapid-shallow breathing was elicited by histamine. Such respiratory change was abolished by bilateral vagotomy, indicating that the vagal pathway fairly participated in the respiratory change during bronchoconstriction. Indeed, recordings of electrical activities of single vagal afferent nerve fibers from pulmonary stretch and irritant receptors elucidated that the bronchoconstriction by the three drugs markedly influenced these receptor activities. The response of stretch receptors to bronchoconstriction was grouped into four types: two of those types showed a marked increase in their activities and the other two a decrease or no change. Such uneven response was assumed to be derived from heterogenous contraction and aeration among the intrapulmonary small airway. On the other hand, irritant receptors were invariably stimulated by increased transmural pressure during bronchoconstriction. Administration of isoproterenol (20 micrograms/kg) which inhibited the smooth muscle contraction abolished stimulatory effect of the drugs to irritant receptors, suggesting that the effect was due to indirect action through the muscle contraction rather than their direct action to the nerve endings.  相似文献

Dynamic compliance, airway resistance, viscous work and respiratory frequency were measured at intervals in horses over 12 h periods. Variation, daily averages and circadian patterns were recorded. Examinations were performed on 24 horses. They were divided into three groups: Normal horses, horses with chronic latent bronchitis and horses with manifest chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Significant differences were found between the daily averages and the fluctuations when the normal group and the COPD group were compared. In most cases differences between all three groups were significant. A significant circadian rhythm for airway resistance was detected in diseased horses. It was also established that single measurements give an incomplete picture of lung function. As has been established in humans, analysis of fluctuations in respiratory mechanics may be of diagnostic value. The above results should be taken into account particularly in trials with bronchodilators in horses with COPD.  相似文献

The pressure flow characteristics of a demand valve which has been suggested to be suitable for use in anaesthetised horses were determined at a range of flow rates commonly encountered in equine anaesthesia. The resistance of the valve was found to be very much greater than the resistance of normal large animal anaesthetic apparatus or the equine lower respiratory tract. The effects of the valve on pulmonary ventilation were investigated in seven anaesthetised, intubated horses. Respiratory rate and dynamic compliance were unaffected by connection of the valve but mean tidal and minute volumes and peak flow rates were substantially reduced. The change in transpulmonary pressure over the respiratory cycle was doubled and indices of work of breathing increased by a factor of three. It was concluded that the resistance offered by the valve was too great for its use in spontaneously breathing horses to be recommended.  相似文献

Objective ? To describe clinical respiratory parameters in cats and dogs with respiratory distress and identify associations between respiratory signs at presentation and localization of the disease with particular evaluation between the synchrony of abdominal and chest wall movements as a clinical indicators for pleural space disease. Design ? Prospective observational clinical study. Setting ? Emergency service in a university veterinary teaching hospital. Animals ? Cats and dogs with respiratory distress presented to the emergency service between April 2008 and July 2009. Interventions ? None. Measurements and Main Results ? The following parameters were systematically determined at time of admission: respiratory rate, heart rate, temperature, type of breathing, movement of the thoracic and abdominal wall during inspiration, presence of stridor, presence and type of dyspnea, and results of thoracic auscultation. Abdominal and chest wall movement was categorized as synchronous, asynchronous, or inverse. Diagnostic test results, diagnosis, and outcome were subsequently recorded. Based on the final diagnoses, animals were assigned to 1 or more of the following groups regarding the anatomical localization of the respiratory distress: upper airways, lower airways, lung parenchyma, pleural space, thoracic wall, nonrespiratory causes, and normal animals. One hundred and seventy‐six animals (103 cats and 73 dogs) were evaluated. Inspiratory dyspnea was associated with upper airway disease in dogs and expiratory dyspnea with lower airway disease in cats. Respiratory noises were significantly associated and highly sensitive and specific for upper airway disease. An asynchronous or inverse breathing pattern and decreased lung auscultation results were significantly associated with pleural space disease in both dogs and cats (P<0.001). The combination is highly sensitive (99%) but not very specific (45%). Fast and shallow breathing was not associated with pleural space disease. Increased or moist pulmonary auscultation findings were associated with parenchymal lung disease. Conclusions ? Cats and dogs with pleural space disease can be identified by an asynchronous or inverse breathing pattern in combination with decreased lung sounds on auscultation.  相似文献

A preliminary study attempted to assess the influence of atmospheric conditions on the breathing pattern of ponies. The respiratory airflow, tidal volume, breathing frequency, minute volume, total pulmonary resistance and heart rate of five ponies (257 +/- 9 kg and three to five years old) were measured by a standardised procedure. Data were collected at rest, during a nine minute period of treadmill exercise and during a five minute recovery period. The ambient temperature (degrees C) and relative humidity (%) were recorded at the time of each investigation and the respiratory parameters were divided into two groups according to whether the sum of these measurements was less than 85, ie, the conditions were cold and dry or greater than 85, ie, the conditions were relatively hot and humid. Data for each pony in both conditions were compared. The ambient temperature and relative humidity did not significantly modify the breathing pattern of the ponies either at rest or during exercise. On the other hand the frequency of breathing was significantly higher and the tidal volume and total pulmonary resistance were significantly lower during recovery in hot and humid conditions than in cold and dry conditions, while the minute volume remained unchanged. It was concluded that, during recovery, environmental conditions may modify the breathing pattern of horses. This suggests that in hot and humid weather conditions the respiratory rate may be an unreliable measure of the fitness of a horse and, consequently, that a more complete pulmonary investigation should be undertaken for an assessment of fitness.  相似文献

Subcutaneous and pulmonary emphysema was observed in some cattle on farms on which outbreaks of bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) occurred. BEF virus was isolated in baby hamsters from one of the cases and cattle were injected with blood from this animal. Although the experimental animals developed typical BEF symptoms, no signs of emphysema could be detected by clinical and pathological examinations. The histopathological changes in the skeletal muscle and synovial membranes of the natural case resembled those of BEF described by Basson, Pienaar & Van der Westhuizen (1970). The lumina of the terminal and respiratory bronchioles in the lungs were obliterated by cellular debris and the muscular portion of some of these bronchioles was necrotic. The possible pathogenesis of pulmonary emphysema is discussed.  相似文献

The exercise-induced changes in the equine breathing pattern were studied by analyzing tidal breathing flow-volume loops recorded in ten ponies both at rest and during a standardized exercise. Airflow, tidal volume, esophageal pressure and mask pressure were simultaneously recorded before, during and after a treadmill exercise. From the collected data, respiratory frequency and total pulmonary resistance were calculated, tidal breathing flow-volume loops were retraced using a computerized method and loop indices were measured for each period of the experimental protocol. For each pony, results of three consecutive daily measurements were averaged. The exercise loop indices were compared with the corresponding resting values using a one-way analysis of variance. The significantly changed indices were correlated with respiratory frequency and total pulmonary resistance. Several types of respiratory patterns were observed at rest as well as during exercise, although each pony was relatively constant in its own pattern of breathing. Most resting inspiratory and expiratory airflow curves were found to be biphasic. When ponies started running, the airflow developed an increasingly rectangular pattern. During strenuous exercise, both inspiratory and expiratory airflow curves showed a substantial increase of the volume acceleration and tended to a plateau. The loop indices relating the expiratory to the inspiratory airflow were significantly increased compared with their rest values. Correlations of these indices with respiratory frequency and total pulmonary resistance were weak.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is an important pathogen in bovine respiratory diseases in the United States. Proliferation of the disease can reach epidemic proportions with mortality reaching as high as 20%. In vitro work shown here suggests that the antiviral compound Ribavirin will be effective in the treatment of infected animals. Treatment at three dose levels with Ribavirin have shown significant inhibition of BRSV proliferation. Bovine turbinate cells were host cells for this study. Tissue culture specimens, infected and noninfected, were carried for 10 days. Presence of BRSV was verified with the use of monoclonal antibody. In addition, the infection with BRSV and consequential treatment with Ribavirin of calves demonstrated a noticeable reduction in viral symptom but no apparent systemic reaction to drug therapy.  相似文献

The influence of clenbuterol on some pulmonary function tests in 11 calves with subacute and chronic bronchopneumonia has been investigated. Treatment with clenbuterol caused changes only in calves with subacute bronchopneumonia; in these animals it decreased the total pulmonary resistance, the viscous work per litre and the peak to peak changes in transpulmonary pressure.  相似文献

The effects of histamine and methacholine aerosols and of a fixed inspiratory resistance on tidal breathing flow-volume loops (TBFVL) were investigated using 18 unsedated, standing, healthy thoroughbred horses. The data were first analysed using traditional flow-volume loop indices and then reduced using standardized factor scoring coefficients obtained in a previous study in this laboratory using similar experimental techniques. On the basis of resting TBFVL analysis, the degree of pulmonary dysfunction caused by inhalation of histamine and methacholine aerosols with concentrations of 10 and 2 mg/ml, respectively, was similar. The fixed resistance also caused significant changes in the resting spirogram and TBFVL indices, suggesting that this model may prove valuable for further studies involving upper respiratory tract (URT) conditions.Administration of histamine and methacholine aerosols resulted in significant changes in all factor scores, although most of the observed changes were due to the effects of these aerosols on the respiratory rate. These findings re-emphasize the importance of the effects of respiratory rate on pulmonary mechanics. Application of the resistance resulted in significant changes in factor score 3, the inspiratory factor, which lends support to the validity of this model for URT conditions. The close agreement between the factor scores obtained under controlled conditions in this study and in a previous study in this laboratory confirms that the factor analysis used for both of these studies provides an adequate means of reducing TBFVL data obtained from thoroughbred horses. The large intra- and inter-individual variation observed both with the indices of TBFVL and with the factor scores limits the potential of these variables for detecting individual animals with obstructive airway disease. Re-evaluation of these indices under the stress of exercise may reduce the variability observed in these data and may increase the magnitude of differences between different animals, providing a means of detecting individual animals with subclinical obstructive airway conditions.Abbreviations CV coefficient of variation - P pl,max maximal intrapleural pressure difference - FVL flow-volume loop - LRT lower respiratory tract - P ao airway opening pressure - P tp transpulmonary pressure - TBVFL tidal breathing flow-volume loop - URT upper respiratory tract - USPTM ultrasonic pneumotachometer  相似文献
