Aseptic and noninfectious diseases of the central nervous system are being recognized with increasing frequency. After multiple episodes of neurologic illness, this 7-year-old Weimaraner dog was euthanatized and submitted for postmortem examination. Lesions in the central nervous system were found mainly in the white matter of the cerebral cortex and cervical spinal cord and represented acute and more chronic injury. Necrotizing vasculitis with fibrinoid change and a marked neutrophilic infiltrate dominated the acute lesions. More chronic changes consisted of perivascular demyelination and accumulation of foamy macrophages with positive staining for myelin. An immune-complex (Arthus-type) vasculitis is suspected.  相似文献

A vaccinated 2-year-old female neutered Weimaraner had bilateral pelvic limb ataxia that progressed over 12 h. The dog became nonambulatory, with signs of pain on palpation of the lumbar spine. The dog also developed multiple joint effusions. On magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, there was a diffuse, asymmetric T2-hyperintensity in the thoracolumbar spinal cord which was characterized by contrast enhancement. Lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis had an elevated white blood cell count and protein. On the basis of MR images and CSF analysis, a presumptive diagnosis of diffuse myelitis was made. The dog became paraplegic and was euthanized. Postmortem examination confirmed the presence of myelitis with vasculitis and nonerosive polyarthritis.  相似文献

A 2-year-old neutered male golden retriever dog presented for lameness secondary to ulcerations of multiple digital paw pads was diagnosed with vasculitis and hypercholesterolemia. Despite treatment, ischemic necrosis progressed to include all distal extremities and the dog eventually expired due to myocardial infarction secondary to severe atherosclerosis. The rapid demise and the dermatologic lesions may have been secondary to cholesterol embolism syndrome which has never before been reported in a dog.  相似文献

A one‐year‐old male Jack Russell terrier developed a prescrotal haematoma after elective orchiectomy. When surgical exploration failed to locate the responsible vessel and conservative therapy (applying a pressure bandage) was not successful in stabilising the dog, abdominal laparoscopy was performed. The haemorrhage originated from the spermatic cord in the inguinal canal bilaterally. After retracting the spermatic cord into the abdomen, haemostasis was performed using a vessel‐sealing device. The prescrotal haematoma was removed and the dog made an uncomplicated recovery.  相似文献

A 9-year-old dog was presented with nonregenerative anaemia and severe thrombocytopenia, diarrhoea, spinal hyperalgesia and progressive hindlimb paresis. A moderately well differentiated cutaneous mast cell tumour (MCT) was removed from the skin of the right elbow along with the enlarged right prescapular lymph node. Due to deterioration of the dog's neurological condition, euthanasia was performed. On necropsy examination, haemorrhage and accumulations of poorly differentiated mast cells were found in the lumbosacral region and cauda equina. This article describes an unusual presentation of systemic mastocytosis and the previously unreported finding of metastasis of mast cells to the spinal cord.  相似文献

A 7-year-old female cross-breed dog was brought to Nihon University Animal Medical Center for investigation of tetraplegia. Lameness in the pelvic limbs, that had developed 2 weeks previously, had progressed to tetraplegia. On magnetic resonance imaging of the spinal cord, isointensity was detected from C2 to C4 and T12 to T13, isointensity and hyperintensity were intermingled from L3 to L4, and hyperintensity was detected from L5 to L7 by T1-weighted imaging. On T2-weighted imaging, hyperintensity was detected in all regions described above. The dog recovered from anaesthesia, but died during the day from systemic bleeding as the result of a coagulopathy of unknown aetiology. Histopathological examination revealed haematomyelia in these regions of the spinal cord. This is the first report of magnetic resonance imaging findings of haematomyelia in canine spontaneous systemic haemorrhage. It appeared that the differences in the findings of T1-weighted imaging along the spinal regions reflected time-lags in the occurrence of bleeding.  相似文献

Disseminated histoplasmosis and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy were diagnosed in a 7 mo old, female spayed mixed-breed dog. The dog improved transiently with supportive care, but deteriorated shortly after initiation of antifungal therapy. The dog was subsequently euthanized. At necropsy, marked granulomatous vasculitis was identified in all affected organs. The tunicae and laminae of the arteries and arterioles were obscured by epithelioid macrophages and multinucleated giant cells admixed with necrotic material. Intracytoplasmic yeast were present within some of these macrophages. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of granulomatous vasculitis associated with Histoplasma capsulatum in a dog.  相似文献

: Infection with Angiostrongylus vasorum was diagnosed at necropsy on a dog that died from acute pulmonary haemorrhage, and on recovery of L1 larvae by Baermann examination of faeces from two dogs, one of which had abdominal pain and retroperitoneal haemorrhage, while the other had right-sided heart failure due to cor pulmonale. The presenting signs included syncope (one dog), exercise intolerance (two dogs), cough (two dogs), abdominal pain (one dog) and depression (one dog). One-stage prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time were prolonged in two dogs, buccal mucosal bleeding time was prolonged in one dog and globulin was elevated in all three dogs. Two dogs were treated with fenbendazole and recovered.  相似文献

An adult female neutered crossbred dog was referred in respiratory distress. Thoracic radiographs revealed tracheal narrowing with a soft tissue opacity dorsal to the trachea, near the thoracic inlet, and a patchy interstitial pulmonary infiltrate. The tracheal narrowing was thought to be due to a combination of intraluminal haemorrhage and mediastinal haemorrhage resulting from a coagulopathy caused by anticoagulant rodenticide intoxication. Treatment included supportive care and administration of vitamin K1, and the dog showed a complete resolution of the clinical signs.  相似文献

Tearing of the thoracolumbar dura mater was diagnosed after myelography in three large breed dogs. All three dogs lost the ability to walk suddenly, after a period of vigorous running or struggling. Radiographic changes suggested that the tearing of the dura was associated with intervertebral disc injury in two dogs. These dogs regained the ability to walk after medical treatment. Postmortem findings suggested that the tearing of the dura mater in the third dog was associated with nerve root injury and spinal cord haemorrhage after an episode of violent struggling.  相似文献

Disseminated Scedosporium prolificans infection in a 1-year-old female spayed German Shepherd dog is described. Clinical signs were predominantly associated with fungal pyelonephritis and the organism was cultured from the urine. The dog was treated with itraconazole and later, terbinafine was added. Subsequent antifungal susceptibility testing of the isolate showed it to be resistant to all available antifungal drugs. The dog was euthanased because of acute abdominal haemorrhage and associated clinical deterioration. Postmortem examination revealed extensive pyogranulomas containing fungal organisms in the renal parenchyma, myocardium, bone marrow, skeletal muscle, liver, lung, spleen, multiple lymph nodes and pancreas.  相似文献

A nine-year-old dog presented with clinical signs consistent with bilateral trigeminal neuropathy. Multicentric lymphoma was diagnosed, and neoplastic lymphocytes were identified in the cerebrospinal fluid. Electromyography revealed spontaneous activity in temporal and masseter muscles. Histopathological examination demonstrated neoplastic cell invasion of temporal and masseter myofibers and of multiple peripheral nerves, including the trigeminal nerve. Central nervous system pathology consisted primarily of spinal root and leptomeningeal lymphoid cell infiltration with relative sparing of spinal cord and brain parenchyma.  相似文献

A two‐year‐old female neutered Tibetan terrier was referred following a one‐month history of lethargy, inappetence and pancytopenia, which had been poorly responsive to immunosuppressive and fluoroquinolone treatment. The dog was diagnosed with pure red cell aplasia and was found to be positive for Ehrlichia canis by both antibody titre measurement and polymerase chain reaction. The dog lived in London and had not travelled outside the UK. The dog was treated with doxycycline, prednisolone and ciclosporin, but died as a result of gastrointestinal tract haemorrhage. To the authors’ knowledge, this represents the first reported case of Ehrlichia canis in a dog in the UK with no previous travel history.  相似文献

Haemoglobinuria and periumbilical discoloration (also known as Cullen's sign) are clinical signs uncommonly reported in veterinary patients. This report describes a case of retroperitoneal haemorrhage in a dog, associated with haemoglobinuria and Cullen's sign. To the authors' knowledge, these clinical signs have not previously been reported singularly or in combination with retroperitoneal haemorrhage in dogs. A neutered male Shetland sheepdog, which was presented for haematuria, also had an abdominal mass, abdominal pain and a large area of periumbilical discoloration. Laboratory studies determined that haemoglobinuria was the cause of the red-coloured urine. Abdominal radiographs suggested a splenic mass and a coeliotomy was performed. During the induction and throughout the anaesthetic period the dog was hypertensive and a large haematoma originating from the right retroperitoneal space was identified at surgery. The cause of the haemorrhage was uncertain but a ruptured phaeochromocytoma was thought possible on the basis of the persistent hypertension and the location of the haemorrhage.  相似文献

A 7 mo old female English springer spaniel was presented with diarrhea, vomiting, apathy, and hyperthermia. Further examinations revealed generalized lymphadenomegaly consistent with sterile neutrophilic-macrophagic lymphadenitis and pulmonary involvement. Subcutaneous nodules developed one day after presentation. Histology was consistent with sterile idiopathic nodular panniculitis and vasculitis. No infectious organism was isolated. The dog responded to prednisolone, but relapsed during medication tapering. Cyclosporine had to be added to control the disease. No further relapse had occurred 98 wk after the first presentation. This is an unusual presentation of a systemic sterile neutrophilic-macrophagic lymphadenitis with nodular panniculitis and vasculitis associated with gastrointestinal and pulmonary signs.  相似文献

A nine-and-a-half-year-old dog was referred for investigation of bradycardia after being hit by a car. Electrocardiography revealed a third degree atrioventricular (AV) block. The dog died during a syncopal attack. Post mortem examination revealed an atrial septal tear with haemorrhage and myocardial degeneration affecting the AV bundle.  相似文献

A case of brodifacoum poisoning is described in a six-year-old male Kelpie cross working dog. The clinical features were severe exercise intolerance, haemorrhage from the oral and nasal cavities, dyspnoea and pale mucous membranes. Diagnosis was confirmed by demonstrating an abnormally long whole blood clotting time. The dog was treated successfully by administering 1 litre of whole blood intravenously, intramuscular vitamin K1 and a three week course of oral vitamin K3.

Experience at the Massey University Small Animal Clinic and Hospital has indicated that poisoning of dogs with the newer long acting anticoagulant rodenticides is becoming more common.  相似文献

A case of distemper in a 6-month-old dog is described. The dog was presented with a history of tetraparesis suggestive of trauma. Neurological examination and clinical pathology findings of lymphopenia and pleocytosis suggested a viral cause. Microscopic findings of a nonsuppurative meningoencephalomyelitis with numerous intranuclear inclusions in the cerebellum, brain stem, and all parts of the spinal cord suggested a diagnosis of distemper.  相似文献

A 4-year-old dog was presented for acute, progressive tetraparesis and cervical hyperesthesia. Symmetrical tubular structures coursing along the lateroventral aspects of the spinal cord at the fourth and fifth cervical vertebrae were identified in magnetic resonance images. At necropsy, vertebral arteries and their spinal branches were severely ectatic bilaterally, and the cervical spinal cord was compressed. Histologically, the ectatic branches of the vertebral and ventral spinal arteries were surrounded by fibrosis with scant mononuclear cell infiltrates and hemorrhage. Spinal branches of the vertebral arteries had focally severe reduction in the tunica media. A thrombus was in an arterial branch. Smaller vessels in adjacent tissue had fibrinoid degeneration. Axonal degeneration was detected in the affected spinal cord and nerve roots. The segmental degenerative radiculomyelopathy in this dog was attributed to anomalous ectasia of the vertebral and ventral spinal arteries.  相似文献
