The aim of this study was to investigate characterization of oestrous response, onset of induced oestrus, oestrous duration, fecundity and fertility in Awassi ewes treatment with intravaginal sponges and Controlled Intravaginal Drug Release (CIDR) devices in combination with pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) under local environmental conditions during the non‐breeding season. A total of 62 ewes were divided into three groups. Group CIDR (n = 20) was treated with CIDR devices for 12 days and 400 IU PMSG was injected upon removal of the CIDR. For ewes in Group Sponge (SP) (n = 24), 30 mg fluorogestone acetate was administered to the sheep for 12 days and 400 IU PMSG was injected upon withdrawal of the sponge. Group Control (CON) (n = 18) served as a control group and received no treatment. Adult, intact and sexually experienced Awassi rams were introduced to all groups at the time when the intravaginal devices were removed. There were no significant differences in terms of oestrous response (CIDR: 90%, SP: 87.5%), time to onset of oestrus and duration of induced oestrus between the CIDR and SP groups. The oestrous response of treatment groups was significantly greater (p < 0.05) than in the control ewes. There were no significant differences in pregnancy (CIDR: 70%, SP: 70.8%), lambing (CIDR: 85%, SP: 79.2%) and fecundity rates between ewes treated with CIDR and those treated with sponges. However, pregnancy and lambing rates were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in ewes treated with CIDR or sponges when compared with those in the control group. It was concluded that it is possible to induce fertile oestrus, successful pregnancy and lambing with the treatment of either CIDR or intravaginal sponge in combination with PMSG in Awassi ewes during the non‐breeding season.  相似文献

In the autumn oestrus season, 20 Slovak Merino ewes were exposed to synchronization of oestrus, treated with the PGF2alfa at doses 125 micrograms (Oestrophan, inj. Spofa). followed by an injection of PMSG at doses 1000 IU (Antex Leo Denmark) and 50,000 IU of Vitamin A (Axerophtol Spofa). 23 anoestrus ewes were synchronized with an intravaginal sponges containing 20 mg of chlorsuperlutine (Agelin, Spofa) for 12 days and after sponge withdrawal, the ewes were injected with 750 and 1000 IU of PMSG (Antex Leo Denmark). Ovulatory response was observed and the possibility of ova recovered from the genital organs in ewes after synchronization of oestrus and superovulation in oestrus season. Higher values of the total follicular response (CFO), and the average number of ovulation (PO) after administering equal doses of PMSG were found out both in anoestrus ewes (CFO 6.62 +/- 4.24; PO 4.25 +/- 4.52) and in oestrus ewes (CFO 2.70 +/- 2.10; PO 2.60 +/- 1.74; resp. CFO 2.80 +/- 1.83; PO 3.4 +/- 3.0), if the ewes were treated with PMSG together with vitamin A. The average number of ova flushed was higher in anoestrus ewes (3.0-0.5) than in oestrus ewes (1.67-3.75). In both trials the equal ratio in the number of released ova was gained from ewes of experimental groups (83-88% of the total number). After ova flushing from the genital organs in ewes of the experimental groups most ovas were found in the isthmatal part of the uterine tube (36-60%). On the basis of gained results it was concluded, that synchronized oestrus ewes on receiving PMSG in anoestrus season the ovarial response was more significant than in autumn breeding season.  相似文献

Objective To determine the efficacy and reliability of cabergoline and pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) for induction of oestrus in bitches with primary or secondary anoestrus. Procedures We studied 39 healthy bitches of various breeds aged 2–6 years and in primary or secondary anoestrus: 20 bitches were administered 5 µg/kg/day cabergoline orally until day 2 after the onset of pro‐oestrus or for a maximum of 42 days, and 19 bitches were administered 20 IU/kg/day PMSG intramuscularly for 5 consecutive days, followed by an additional single injection of 25 IU/kg of human chorionic gonadotrophin on the fifth day. Results The rates of oestrus induction in the primary and secondary anoestrous bitches treated with cabergoline and PMSG were found to be similar. Pregnancy and whelping rates in the cabergoline group were statistically different from the rates in the PMSG group (P < 0.001). Conclusion Cabergoline is more effective and reliable for the induction of a fertile oestrus in bitches with primary or secondary anoestrous.  相似文献

Twenty-eight bitches with unknown reproductive histories were injected intravenously with either human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) or equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) (pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin) and their oestradiol responses were measured at the time of the injection and 90 minutes later. They were at various stages of the oestrous cycle as determined by histology and a progesterone assay for luteal function. Twenty-six of them were considered to be entire because they showed either an increase in plasma oestradiol over preinjection values or steady high values. The ovaries were removed from 25 of these animals and the other probably had a remnant of ovary because it came into oestrus some weeks later. In two remaining bitches no oestradiol could be detected either before or after the injection of gonadotrophin and they were predicted to have been neutered, which was confirmed at laparotomy. In the entire bitches, the highest plasma oestradiol concentration was measured during metoestrus and the lowest during anoestrus.  相似文献

Forty-six adult merino ewes were immunised against oestradiol-17 beta-6 carbomethyloxime:human serum albumin and 48 comparable ewes were used as controls in an experiment to study the effects of gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) on ovulatory responses after treatment with pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin (PMSG). All the ewes were treated with progestogen sponges for 14 days and received 1500 iu PMSG on the 12th day. Twenty-four control and 24 immunised ewes received 25 micrograms GnRH 21.5 hours and 23 hours after the sponges were withdrawn. Plasma samples were collected between 17 and 50 hours after the sponges were withdrawn and assayed for luteinising hormone (LH). Immunisation reduced the proportion of ewes which ovulated and their rate of ovulation. Injection of GnRH increased the proportion of immunised ewes ovulating (P less than 0.0005) and their rate of ovulation (P less than 0.0001). More unovulated follicles were observed in immunised ewes regardless of GnRH treatment (P less than 0.0001). The rate of recovery of eggs was reduced after immunisation. Treatment with GnRH produced a surge of LH of equal magnitude in the control and immunised ewes although not as many immunised ewes ovulated.  相似文献

The ovarian responses of anoestrus beef cows to a combined treatment with medroxy-progesterone acetate (MAP) sponges and oestradiol benzoate or equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) were evaluated. Forty-five suckling Hereford cows were allocated to three equal groups. Group 1 received a MAP sponge for seven days plus an injection of 2 mg oestradiol benzoate when the sponge was inserted (day 0) and 1 mg when the sponge was withdrawn; group 2 received identical treatment until day 7, when a dose of 400 iu of eCG was administered, and group 3 were left untreated as control animals. From day 0 to day 11 the cows' ovaries were examined daily by transrectal ultrasonography, and their oestrous behaviour was observed from 24 hours to 96 hours after the sponge was removed. Data from cows that had a corpus luteum present before the sponge was withdrawn were not used in subsequent analyses; there were four in group 1, five in group 2 and four in group 3. In 19 of the 21 cows in groups 1 and 2 a new follicular wave was observed to emerge at a mean (sd) interval of 3.9 (0.3) days after the insertion of the sponge, whereas in group 3 it occurred in all 11 cows after 3.4 (0.6) days. Only the six cows that had a follicle of 9 mm or larger in diameter ovulated (P < or = 0.001). Nine of the 11 cows in group 1 came into oestrus, compared with two of the 10 in group 2 and none of the control cows (P < or = 0.001). Ovulation was observed in four, two and none of the cows in groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to compare the efficacy of synthetic progestogens administered by subcutaneous ear implant or intravaginal sponge to induce a synchronized estrus in adult ewes and ewe lambs and to evaluate reproductive performance (fertility and litter size) to breeding at the synchronized estrus. Experimental animals were representative of three strains maintained in total confinement and exposed to a synthetic light regimen which alternated at intervals of 4 mo from 18 h day length to 10 h day length/24 h. Treatments were applied at different times of the year at the end of a low light cycle. Implants contained Norgestomet (3 mg) impregnated in a polymethacrylate polymer (Implant H) or impregnated in a silastic polymer containing 1.05 (Implant S1), 1.78 (Implant S2) or 2.60 mg (Implant S3) Norgestomet, respectively. Intravaginal sponges contained 40 mg Fluorogestone Acetate. Implants or sponges were left in situ for 12 d and 500 IU pregnant mares' serum gonadotropin was injected im at the time of removal. Following treatment with Implant H, 96% of ewes were judged to be in estrus at 48 h after implant removal. Fertility of adult ewes and ewe lambs (6 to 7 mo of age at time of breeding) at the synchronized estrus were similar after implant H or sponge treatment, but litter size was higher (P less than .05) for adult ewes treated with sponges. The percentages of adult ewes marked by rams within 60 h after removal of silastic implants or intravaginal sponges were similar. There was a tendency for ewe lambs to be marked later than adult ewes and for adult ewes treated with Implant S1 and Implant S2 to be marked earlier than ewes treated with Implant S3 or sponges. Higher percentages (P less than .05) of adult ewes and ewe lambs lambed to breeding at the synchronized estrus after treatment with Implant S2 or Implant S3, respectively, than after treatment with Implants S2 or sponges.  相似文献

The uterine acetylcholinesterase and total cholinesterase (acetylcholinesterase plus butyrylcholinesterase) activities in normal and fenchlorphos treated blue fox vixens were determined during various reproductive states.AChE and Total-ChE of non-medicated vixens in oestrus were about one half of those in anoestrus. In pregnant uteri (luteal phase) the activities were 25 % and 30% compared to anoestrus. In vixens given 100 mg/kg fenchlorphos for 3 weeks during anoestrus, the remaining activity of AChE in uterus were in average 37%. Pregnant and non-pregnant vixens in the luteal phase medicated prior to mating and during time of implantation, displayed AChE activities which were only moderabely reduced (remaining activities 83% and 72% compared to medicated animals in anoestrus: remaining activity 37%).Plasma ChE-activity increased during pregnancy in the controls while enzyme activity was strongly reduced in animals given 100 mg/kg fenchlorphos daily through the whole pregnancy. It was concluded that the previous reported embryotoxic effect of fenchlorphos in the blue fox did not seem to be directed towards the moderate inhibition of the uterine cholinesterases.  相似文献

Fifty-nine female yearlings of local Awassi sheep were randomly divided into two groups. Animals in group T (treated) were fitted with intravaginal sponges containing 60 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate for 14 days followed by 400 IU of pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) at sponge withdrawal, whereas group C (control) received no treatment. Oestrus rate was 92.7 and 11.2% for groups T and C, respectively. Lambing rate was 78 and 5.6% for groups T and C, respectively. Twinning rate was 31.3% in group T compared to zero in group C. Average birth weight for single born lambs (4.7 ± 0.6 kg) was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than twin born lambs (3.0 ± 0.5 kg) in group T. The average concentration of blood progesterone collected between days 17–19 after mating was 19.30 nmol/l and the accuracy of early pregnancy diagnosis was 100%. It was concluded that, it is possible to induce synchronized oestrus, and to increase the twinning rate in Syrian Awassi sheep yearlings outside the breeding season, using intravaginal sponges and PMSG. In addition, early pregnancy diagnosis could be successfully determined in female Awassi sheep yearlings between days 17–19 after mating.  相似文献

The effect of selenium (Se) supplementation on the reproductive performance of Merino ewes mated out of the normal breeding season was studied in a 2 (no Se supplementation vs Se supplementation) × 2 (ewes mated at natural oestrus vs synchronized oestrus) factorial design with 50 ewes per treatment combination. Synchronization of oestrus was achieved by intravaginal insertion of 40 mg cronolone sponges for 14 days and administration of 440 IU PMSG at sponge withdrawal. Se supplementation was by the addition to the concentrate with 0.5 mg/kg of Se in the form of selenomethionin, for the 3 months prior to the mating and during gestation. Ewes were kept under range conditions in south‐west Spain, and exposed to Merino rams at a female: male ratio of 4 : 1 from 2 days following sponge withdrawal, or the equivalent time, for 21 days. Se supplementation alone did not improve significantly ewe fertility or lamb birth weight, but there was a positive effect of synchronizing ewes mated out of the breeding season as more of these ewes lambed and produced more lambs than those not synchronized. However, a strong interaction was found between synchronization and Se supplementation, causing a deleterious effect on the reproductive performance of ewes. This negative effect, presumably related to high embrionary mortality caused by Se toxicity, should be taken into account for oestrus synchronizing in Se‐deficient areas. The supplementation with Se, for the prevention of nutritional myodystrophy degeneration in lambs, should be conducted in a fashion which does not generate high levels of Se in the ewes around the mating period.  相似文献

Intravaginal sponges (IS) impregnated with progestagens are widely used for oestrous synchronization in ewes. As progestogens depress the immuno response, the first aim was to determine whether medroxiprogesterone acetate (MAP) content affects the vaginal bacteria number (VBN) in IS‐treated anoestrous ewes. The second aim was to compare the effectiveness of different antibiotic treatments to control the VBN increase caused by IS. In both experiments, IS were inserted during 14 days in anoestrous ewes. In the first, 11 ewes received commercial sponges (50 mg MAP), and 10 ewes received placebo sponges. For the second experiment, IS were inserted in three groups (n = 12/group), containing oxytetracycline im (20 mg/kg); injected into the sponge (0.02 mg), or control (no antibiotic). At sponge withdrawal, all ewes received 300 UI eCG. Mucous samples were collected from the vagina before sponge insertion, at sponge withdrawal, 24, 48 and 72 h later, and the VBN (colony‐forming units per ml; CFU/ml) was counted after 48‐h incubation. Medroxiprogesterone content did not affect VBN (log CFU/ml: 4.3 ± 0.2 vs 4.4 ± 0.2 with and without MAP, respectively). Bacterial number increased from 3.5 ± 0.2 at sponge insertion to 6.9 ± 0.1 at sponge withdrawal (p < 0.0001) and decreased the following day to 4.3 ± 0.2 (p < 0.0001). In the second experiment, VBN increased at sponge withdrawal (p < 0.0001) in all groups and decreased the following day (p < 0.0001). The CFU/ml at sponge withdrawal was lower in ewes treated with antibiotics (p < 0.0001), being even lower when local rather than systemic antibiotic was administered (log CFU/ml: 3.3 ± 1.8 vs 7.2 ± 1.8). The day of oestrous VBN was similar for all treatments and similar to that observed before sponge insertion. We concluded that MAP does not influence the increase in VBN, as the main effect is provoked by the sponge device itself, and local antibiotic treatment resulted in a lower bacterial growth than systemic treatments.  相似文献

Thirty-two mature crossbred (Fine Wool Synthetic, FWS) sheep developed for fine wool production in India were treated for superovulation and oestrus synchronization in spring season. The ewes were randomly allocated to four treatment groups in a factorially designed experiment. For induction of superovulation, pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) was administered alone (group 1), in combination with gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) (group 2) or with follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) (group 3) and with both (group 4). Oestrus was synchronized in all the ewes by two injections of prostaglandin F2 (PGF, 10 mg each) administered at an interval of 10 days. Superovulation treatment started 48 h prior to the second PGF injection. The proportion of ewes in oestrus did not differ significantly (p>0.05) in the four groups. The use of GnRH set the ewes into oestrus earlier than the ewes in the other groups. Treatment with PMSG (800 IU) in conjunction with 4 g of Buserilin (GnRH) increased the ovulation rate (9.1±2.6 corpora lutea (CL)) above that observed when PMSG was used alone (3.0±0.7 CL). The use of FSH (0.5 U ovagen) in conjunction with PMSG was characterized by a decrease in the proportion of ewes with 2 CL (4/8 vs 7/8; p<0.05) and in the number of ovulations, i.e. CL observed (2.4±0.6 vs 9.1±2.6), and a nonsignificant increase in the incidence of large follicles (LF) (4.6±1.28 vs 3.25±0.6; p>0.05). The interaction between treatments of FSH and GnRH was not significant (p>0.05).It is concluded that use of GnRH, in conjunction with either PMSG alone or PMSG plus FSH treatment, advanced the onset of oestrus and increased the ovulation rate in FWS sheep.  相似文献

Three hundred and sixty-one adult Rasa Aragonesa ewes were used to evaluate the effect on their reproductive parameters of melatonin implants used in association with the classical synchronization treatment (progestagen plus pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG)) in an accelerated breeding system (3 lambings in 2 years). The animals were divided into four groups on the basis of body condition score (H, 2.75; L, 2.5) and treatment (M) or no treatment (C) with a subcutaneous implant containing 18 mg of melatonin on 17 February 1997. Intravaginal pessaries containing 30 mg of fluorogestone acetate were inserted into all the ewes between 3 and 13 March and 500 IU PMSG was injected intramuscularly when the pessaries were withdrawn 14 days later. Fertile rams were introduced on 17 March. The pregnancy rate and litter size were unaffected by either melatonin treatment or body condition. The overall fertility at first plus second oestrus was between 76.4% (HC) and 82.8% (HM), and the litter size was between 1.58 (LM) and 1.82 (HC) lambs born per lambing. However, melatonin did seem to have a positive effect on the reproductive parameters of non-pregnant ewes at the second mating period 2 months later. Finally, no detrimental effect of melatonin implants on fertility and litter size was recorded in the medium term.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to examine the effect of progesterone prior to a GnRH‐PGF2α treatment on oestrus and pregnancy in seasonally anoestrous Awassi ewes. Twenty‐four ewes were randomly assigned to three groups to be pre‐treated with 60 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate sponges (group A), 600 mg progesterone sponges (group B) or blank sponges (group C) for 4 days. All ewes were injected with 100 μg of GnRH 24 h after sponge removal followed, 5 days later, by 20 mg PGF2α injection. Ewes were exposed to three fertile rams at the time of PGF2α injection (day 0, 0 h) and were checked for breeding marks at 6‐h intervals for 5 days. Blood samples were collected from all ewes 1 day (day ?10) prior to sponge insertion, at the time of sponge removal (day ?6), 1 day following sponge removal (day ?5, at the time of GnRH injection) and at the time of PGF2α injection (day 0) for analysis of progesterone. Progesterone concentrations on days ?10 and ?5 were basal and averaged 0.2 ± 0.04 and 0.2 ± 0.2 ng/ml, respectively. Progesterone concentrations on day ?6 were elevated only in group B ewes and were higher (p < 0.0001) than those of groups A and C. Progesterone concentrations on day 0 were higher (p = 0.002) in groups A and B than group C. Oestrous responses occurred only in ewes of groups A and B (p > 0.05). Induced oestrus conception rate was greater (p < 0.01) in group A than groups B and C. Ewes returned to oestrus 17–20 days following day 0 were two of eight, six of eight and three of eight of groups A, B and C, respectively, all of which eventually lambed. The overall lambing rate was 82% in progesterone‐primed ewes compared with only 38% non‐progesterone‐primed ewes (p < 0.05). Progesterone priming apparently sensitizes GnRH‐PGF2α‐treated seasonally anoestrous ewes and increases their response in oestrus and pregnancy rates.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of dose and application time of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) on reproductive performance of hair sheep ewes synchronized with fluorogesterone acetate (FGA) under tropical conditions of Northeastern Mexico. Ninety-nine hair ewes (63 Blackbelly and 36 Pelibuey) were treated with intravaginal sponges during 10 days. After insertion of FGA sponges, ewes were divided into four groups, and PMSG was injected intramuscularly at doses of 100, 200, and 400 IU. Relative to FGA sponge removal, PMSG was administrated at −48 h, −24 h, and at sponge removal. PMSG was not administered to the control group. Control ewes had similar (P > 0.05) lambing rate, fertility, and fecundity than those treated with 100 IU of PMSG, but lower (P < 0.05) percentages to these variables than those treated with 200 and 400 IU of PMSG. Time to estrus decreased linearly, and ovulation rate increased quadratically as PMSG dose increased (0 to 400 IU). Administration of PMSG before sponge removal increased (P < 0.01) response to estrus and decreased (P < 0.01) interval to estrus compared with control. Ovulation rate, lambing rate, fertility, and fecundity were not affected (P > 0.05) by administration time of PMSG. Both dose and time of PMSG application did not affect (P > 0.05) pregnancy rate, percentage of single and multiple lambing, and prolificacy. In conclusion, results show that the dose of 400 IU of PMSG administered before sponge withdrawal in an estrus synchronization protocol improved reproductive efficiency of hair sheep ewes.  相似文献

The Garole is a prolific breed of microsheep that possesses the FecB gene, which increases ovulation rate. The purpose of this study was to compare embryo production by multiple ovulation in seven Garole ewes with that in seven normal size, non-prolific Malpura ewes, and assess the influence of the large body size of Awassi crossbred recipient ewes on the birth-weight of Garole lambs. Oestrus was synchronised with two intramuscular injections of 7.5 mg prostaglandin F(2alpha) administered 10 days apart. The donor ewes were superovulated by the use of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin and follicle-stimulating hormone. The onset and duration of oestrus were similar in both breeds. The Garole donors had higher total mean (se) ovarian responses (15.6 [3.6] v 9.1 [2.3]), ovulation rate (13.6 [3.1] v 8.4 [2.2]) and produced more transferable embryos (6.0 [3.5] v 4.0 [0.9]) than the Malpura donors, but the differences were not statistically significant. The Garole lambs produced by embryo transfer were on average 57.8 per cent heavier at birth than contemporary Garole lambs produced by natural mating.  相似文献

The administration of melatonin via intravaginal sponges is an effective method of advancing the breeding season in ewes. In the present study the fertility of melatonin-treated ewes has been compared with that of ewes induced to ovulate by conventional treatment. On June 25, 15, 15-month-old ewes (group 1) were given intravaginal implants containing melatonin in silastic tubing. On August 8, 13 similar ewes (group 2) were given Veramix sponges which were removed 12 days later, when they were given 500 iu pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin (PMSG). Two intact raddled rams were introduced to the combined groups on August 21. The mean date of mating was September 3 +/- 1.5 for group 1 and August 21 +/- 0.2 for group 2 ewes. All the ewes in group 1 and 10 in group 2 (77 per cent) were mated. All the ewes were slaughtered approximately 50 days after mating and their reproductive tracts removed. The mean ovulation rates were 2.1 and 2.3 in groups 1 and 2, respectively. The results indicate that conception rates of 87 per cent and 61.5 per cent of ewes put to the ram were obtained in the melatonin-treated and PMSG-treated groups, respectively. At slaughter the melatonin-treated group were found to have a mean of 1.47 live fetuses per ewe put to the ram and the PMSG-treated group a mean of 1.08. It can therefore be concluded that melatonin implantation is an effective method for the advancement of seasonal breeding in anoestrous sheep, and that the fertility achieved is at least as good as that given by conventional progestogen-PMSG treatment.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out in January and May 1975 to study reproductive performance (fertility, prolificacy and fecundity) of totally confined sheep synchronized for estrus. The main objective of the first experiment was to compare reproductive performance of ewes bred naturally to those bred by artificial insemination. Semen for artificial insemination was collected by either artificial vagina or electroejaculation and stored for up to 36 hours at 5 degrees C. A second objective was to evaluate the effect of pregnant mares' serum gonadotrophin on the reproductive performance of ewes synchronized for estrus. Fertility was 53% for ewes bred by natural mating, 34% for ewes receiving pregnant mares' serum gonadotrophin and bred by artificial insemination, and 9% for those not receiving pregnant mares' serum gonadotrophin and bred by artificial insemination. There was no difference in fertility between ewes bred with semen collected by artificial vagina or by electroejaculation. A similar pattern was observed for fecundity. Average prolificacy was 2.0 with no significant differences among mating methods or pregnant mares' serum gonadotrophin application being observed. In the second experiment, the reproductive performance of ewes inseminated with semen stores at 5 degrees C for 48 to 60 hours was compared to that of ewes inseminated with semen stores for 24 to 36 hours. No significant differences in the reproductive performance were detected. Although average fertility (9%) and fecundity (19%) were low, prolificacy averaged 2.0 lambs per ewe lambing.  相似文献

Galway and Finnish Landrace ewes were immunized with an androstenedione protein conjugate (Fecundin, trademark of Glaxo Group Ltd.) on two occasions 30 days apart at the beginning of the breeding season. All sheep were treated with intravaginal progestagen sponges to synchronize cycles and exposed to rams for 6 weeks. The antibody titre to androstenedione, plasma androstenedione concentrations, display of oestrus, ovulation rate and litter size were determined. The results were compared with those for non-immunized animals and, in the case of the Galway breed, with ewes given 750 i.u. PMSG at the time of sponge removal.Over 98% of all ewes were mated within 30 days of sponge removal, but immunized ewes were delayed in their expression of oestrous cycles after withdrawal of progestagen treatment. The proportion of ewes mated that ultimately lambed was similar for all treatments, although during the first 5 days after sponge removal the conception rate was lower in immunized ewes. The mean ovulation rates for control, immunized and PMSG-treated Galway ewes were 1.75, 2.52 and 2.05, respectively; the corresponding values for litter size at birth were 1.48, 1.89 and 1.53, respectively.Comparison of the effects of immunization in the Galway and Finnish Landrace breeds indicated that ovulation rate increased in response to treatment in both breeds. Although litter size also increased in the Galway there was no evidence for a similar effect in the Finnish Landrace breed. Plasma concentrations of androstenedione were significantly higher following immunization in Galway than in Finnish Landrace ewes. There was an association between high antibody titres to androstenedione and the reduction in behavioural oestrus and conception rate immediately after sponge removal. The implication of this effect in sheep management is to initiate the immunization earlier in the season so that the introduction of the ram can take place 3–4 weeks after the booster injection when as these data have shown, the fertility of the ewes is similar to untreated ewes but the fecundity is higher.  相似文献
