Background

Accurate early diagnosis of lung metastases is important for establishing therapeutic measures. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare survey thoracic radiographs and computerized tomography (CT) scans to specifically identify lung metastases in female dogs with mammary tumors.

Methods

Twenty-one female dogs, weighing 3 to 34 kg and aged from 5 years to 14 years and 10 months, with mammary tumors were studied. In all dogs before the imaging examinations, fine-needle aspiration cytology of the mammary tumors was performed to confirm the diagnosis. Three-view thoracic radiographs were accomplished: right lateral, left lateral and ventrodorsal views. Sequential transverse images of the thorax were acquired on a spiral Scanner, before and after intravenous bolus injection of nonionic iodine contrast. Soft-tissue and lung windows were applied. All the mammary tumors were surgically removed and examined histologically.

Results

The correlation between the cytological and histological results regarding presence of malignancy was observed in only 17 cases. In radiographic examinations, no dog displayed signs of lung metastases or thorax chest lesions. CT detected lung metastasis in two cases, while small areas of lung atelectasis located peripherally were found in 28.57% of the dogs.

Conclusion

In this study population, spiral CT showed higher sensitivity than chest radiographies to detect lung metastasis; this indicates that CT should be performed on all female dogs with malignant mammary tumors.  相似文献

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma was diagnosed in a 15‐year‐old donkey that presented with signs of chronic laminitis, weight loss and chronic colic. An intra‐abdominal mass was identified by exploratory laparoscopy, and this was subsequently confirmed to be a pancreatic adenocarcinoma at post mortem examination. Unlike most previously reported cases of pancreatic disease in equids, this donkey had no clinicopathological evidence of an associated hepatopathy.  相似文献

The predominant acid mucopolysaccharides found in selected epithelial mammary tumors of dogs stained with alcian blue and were labile to hyaluronidase digestion. These histochemical characteristics identified them as hyaluronic acid, chondroitin-4- and chondroitin-6-sulfate. The intensity of the staining of these acid mucopolysaccharides varied in a transitionary process from a precartilaginous to a pseudocartilaginous intercellular matrix to mature hyaline cartilage. The tumor acid mucopolysaccharides were indistinguishable from those associated with formation of cartilage in developing mammals; such cartilage is reported to be produced only by cells of mesodermal origin. There was no evidence to suggest transitional changes in myoepithelial cells, neoplastic epithelial cells or their components that could contribute to the formation of the acid mucopolysaccharides. It was concluded that the heterotopic tissues (cartilage, bone and fibrous connective tissue) in the epithelial mammary tumors were derived from cells of mesodermal origin and formed the adjacent stroma in areas of neoplasia.  相似文献

The mammary gland of transgenic animals has been used for the production of recombinant proteins of therapeutic and nutraceutical use. The objective of this study was to compare the ultrastructure of transgenic and non-transgenic rabbit mammary gland tissue. New Zealand White transgenic rabbits were obtained by breeding non-transgenic rabbits with transgenic founder rabbits containing a whey acidic protein-human factor VIII (WAP-hFVIII) transgene integrated into their genome. Samples of mammary gland tissue from lactating rabbit females were isolated by surgical procedures. These samples were examined by optical and electron microscopy and photographs were taken. Measurements of ultrastructural organelles were made from digital images of the mammary cells. No differences were found in the cellular structure of mammary tissue, but significant differences t((0.001)) in the relative volume of mitochondria and vacuoles between transgenic and non-transgenic mammary gland epithelium were observed.  相似文献

A 6-year-old Nubian buck was presented for bilateral mammary gland enlargement. Gynecomastia and mastitis were diagnosed, and bilateral mastectomy was performed. Histological examination showed mammary adenocarcinoma, active lactation, hyperplasia, and abscessation. Karyotyping showed a normal male. Clinical, therapeutic, etiologic, and epidemiologic aspects of gynecomastia and mammary gland adenocarcinoma are discussed.  相似文献

Three dogs with advanced-stage adenocarcinoma of the gastrointestinal tract were treated by use of resection, adjuvant chemotherapy with cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil, and second-look laparotomy (SLL). In combination with histologic examination of biopsy specimens obtained during the procedure, SLL is the most accurate diagnostic procedure for identification of residual or recurrent microscopic or macroscopic abdominal neoplasia; however, to the authors' knowledge, there are no reports of its clinical use in the field of veterinary oncology. This lack of clinical use in animals is likely because of factors such as cost, procedure-associated risks perceived by the owners and veterinarians, lack of data to define proper clinical application, and, perhaps to some degree, an entrenched belief that treatment of advanced stage cancer in animals is inappropriate. Nevertheless, the use of SLL should be considered for evaluation of abdominal tumors or intra-abdominal metastases in dogs that appear to be in complete clinical remission near or at the anticipated completion of chemotherapy (especially if effective second-line chemotherapy protocols are available) or when secondary cytoreduction might be beneficial.  相似文献

Fourteen cats with advanced mammary adenocarcinoma were treated with doxorubicin HCl and cyclophosphamide. All cats had inoperable or recurrent disease, and 9 cats had metastasis to the thorax. Eleven of the cats were available for long-term evaluation; 3 had complete response to chemotherapy, with survival times of 180, 283, and 344 days; 2 had partial response, with survival times of 45 and 149 days; 2 had stabilization of disease, with survival times of 170 and 182 days; and 4 had no response, with survival times of 4, 47, 67, and 106 days.  相似文献

Detection of autoantibody, complement, or both bound to RBC is an essential requirement for unequivocal diagnosis of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia in dogs. An enzyme-linked antiglobulin test was adapted for laboratory diagnosis of this disease. The refinement and routine use of this assay have allowed further observation of the pathogenesis of the disease process. In particular, degree of hemolysis can be related to the degree of RBC sensitization associated with primary immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, and this correlation is highest for IgG autoantibody. Results indicate that autoantibody isotype might have an important role in the hemolytic process.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Although definitive diagnosis of hypoadrenocorticism usually is made by an adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test using 250 microg/dog of synthetic ACTH (cosyntropin/tetracosactrin), increased costs have prompted a search for less-expensive diagnostic methods. HYPOTHESIS: A low-dose ACTH stimulation test (5 microg/kg) will distinguish between dogs with nonadrenal illness and hypoadrenocorticism. Additionally, administration of cosyntropin will not affect the results of another ACTH stimulation test performed 24 hours later. ANIMALS: Eight healthy adult dogs and 29 hospitalized dogs with suspected hypoadrenocorticism. METHODS: In this prospective study, each healthy dog received 4 ACTH stimulation tests. Dogs received either 5 microg/kg or 250 microg/dog of cosyntropin on day 1 and the alternate dose on day 2. The opposite dosing sequence was used after a 2-week washout period (days 15 and 16). Dogs with suspected Addison's disease received 2 ACTH stimulation tests, 24 hours apart, using either a dose of 5 microg/kg cosyntropin or 250 microg/dog on the 1st day and the alternate dose on the 2nd day. RESULTS: In healthy dogs, poststimulation cortisol concentrations on days 2 and 16 and days 1 and 15 were equivalent (90% confidence interval [CI]: 86.7-101.2%). In dogs with suspected Addison's disease, mean (+/-SD) cortisol responses to ACTH in the 5 microg/kg dose (16.2+/-7.7 microg/dL) and 250 microg/dog dose (15.9+/-6.3 microg/dL) were statistically equivalent (90% CI: 91.2-105.4%). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Low-dose ACTH stimulation testing distinguishes between dogs with nonadrenal illness and hypoadrenocorticism. Additionally, the administration of 2 ACTH stimulation tests on consecutive days does not affect results of the second test.  相似文献

Canine aggression directed to human beings is a common presenting complaint and requires attention to safety issues and behavior modification to minimize the risks of future aggression. Dogs may bite familiar people, including family members, or unfamiliar people for a variety of reasons. Anxiety plays an important role in aggression regardless of its target or circumstances. Effective management of aggression may include education and safety counseling for owners, lifestyle changes for dogs and owners, avoidance of provocations when possible, and behavior modification to minimize the risk of future bites. Drug therapy may be indicated to facilitate behavior modification or to reduce reactivity in the dog.  相似文献

In 11 dogs with nasal adenocarcinoma, IV treatment with 2 to 8 cycles of cisplatin at a dosage of 60 mg/m2 of body surface, given at 3-week intervals, resulted in a survival time of 8 to 128 weeks (mean, 32.7 weeks; median, 20 weeks). Radiography revealed complete remission in 2 dogs and partial remission in 1 dog, for an overall response rate of 27%. Clinical problems such as nasal discharge (n = 11), sneezing (n = 6), and epistaxis (n = 4) resolved in 1 to 2 weeks in all dogs after beginning chemotherapy.  相似文献

D-dimer is formed during thrombus formation when factor XIIIa crosslinks the terminal D-domains of fibrin. The D-dimer epitope is exposed when the thrombus is lysed by plasmin. Thus, D-dimer represents both thrombin and plasmin activation and is specific for fibrinolysis. D-dimer concentrations are increased in dogs with DIC or other thromboembolic disorders, but because D-dimer is an indicator of physiologic or pathologic fibrinolysis, values are elevated in other conditions associated with fibrinolysis, including orthopedic surgery, neoplasia, and internal hemorrhage. It can be used as an ancillary test for the diagnosis of DIC but is not recommended as a sole test for this purpose. D-dimer has the potential to be a useful laboratory test for the detection of pulmonary thromboembolism in dogs. Further studies are needed to determine the appropriate applications for this test in veterinary patients to aid in clinical decision making, treatment, and patient care.  相似文献

On the basis of plasma concentrations of pantothen[14C]ate, after its intravenous administration, a three compartment open model was proposed to predict the pharmacokinetics of pantothenate in dogs. The model assumed a central compartment comprising the plasma and other extracellular fluids, and distribution into two other peripheral compartments, one of which included the liver. Elimination of unchanged pantothenate was assumed to occur by metabolism from the compartment which included the liver. Distribution of pantothen[14C]ate from the plasma compartment into the liver compartment was shown to be very rapid; during 10 min after intravenous administration about 80 per cent of the dose had been cleared from the plasma compartment. The model successfully predicted the influence (first pass effect) of the liver on the fraction of an oral dose which reached the peripheral plasma unchanged.  相似文献
