The effects of the imposition and timing of a rest period from continuous sheep stocking, for a conservation cut, on white clover presence in forty perennial ryegrass/white clover associations were studied over two full grazing seasons. Each association consisted of one grass variety along with one white clover variety, the grasses being diploid and tetraploid ryegrasses from each of five maturity groups and the white clovers from each of four leaf size categories. The presence of white clover within each association was assessed at the beginning and end of both seasons by means of a 0–64-m2 quadrat subdivided into 100 squares, each 80 mm × 80 mm, the number of squares in which any part of a white clover plant was visible being recorded. Complementary point quadrat data were also collected. Although continuous sheep stocking did not necessarily have an adverse effect on white clover presence, a July to mid-August rest period increased white clover proportions in the swards (means: unrested, 48–1; April to late May rest, 32.7; July to mid-August rest, 67.3 - s.e.d. 7.59; P < 0.05) the benefit increasing with increasing white clover leaf size. The early rest period (April to late May) reduced white clover presence and the late rest period (July to mid-August) increased white clover presence, these effects being intensified with increasing white clover leaf size (very large-leaved clover: unrested, 20.6; April to late May rest, 8.3; July to mid-August rest, 41.1 and small-leaved clover: unrested, 96.3; April to late May rest, 84.8; July to mid-August rest, 97 - s.e.d. 9.2; P <0001). Tetraploid ryegrass/white clover associations had consistently and significantly more white clover than diploid ryegrass/white clover associations of similar ryegrass maturity group (tetraploid, 53.4; diploid 44.8 - s.e.d. 2.12; P <0.001) and associations with early maturing ryegrass contained more white clover than those with late maturing ryegrasses, the effect of maturity group being greater than that of ploidy. Overall, white clover presence increased with increasing openness of grass growth habit.  相似文献

Performance of white clover/perennial ryegrass mixtures under cutting   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Clover persistence in mixtures of two varieties of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) with contrasting growth habits and three white clover (Trifolium repens) varieties differing in leaf sizes was evaluated at two cutting frequencies. An experiment was sown in 1991 on a clay soil. The plots received no nitrogen fertilizer. In 1992, 1993 and 1994, mixtures containing the large-leaved clover cv. Alice yielded significantly more herbage dry matter (DM) and had a higher clover content than mixtures containing cvs Gwenda and Retor. Companion grass variety did not consistently affect yield or botanical composition. Cutting at 2 t DM ha?1 resulted in slightly higher total annual yields than cutting at 1.2 t DM ha?1, but did not affect clover content. In 1992 the mixtures yielded, depending on cutting frequency and variety, 10·6–14·6 t DM ha?1 and 446–599 kg ha?1 N, whereas grass monocultures yielded only 1·2–2·0 t DM ha?1 and 25–46 kg ha?1 N. From 1992 to 1994 the annual mean total herbage yield of DM in the mixtures declined from 12·2 to 10·5 to 8·7 t ha?1, the white clover yield declined from 8·7 to 6·5 to 4·1 t ha?1 and the average clover content during the growing season declined from 71% to 61% to 46%, whereas the grass yield increased from 3·4 to 4·0 to 4·5 t ha?1. The N yield decreased from 507 to 406 to 265 kg N ha?1 and the apparent N fixation from 470 to 380 to 238 kg N ha?1. Nitrate leaching losses during the winters of 1992–93 and 1994–95 were highest under mixtures with cv. Alice, but did not exceed 10 kg N ha?1. The in vitro digestible organic matter (IVDOM) was generally higher in clover than in grass, particularly in the summer months. No differences in IVDOM were found among clover or grass varieties. The experiment will be continued to study clover persistence and the mechanisms that affect the grass/clover balance.  相似文献

Mixtures of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) and white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) sown in alternate rows or in a thoroughly mixed matrix were grazed by sheep, either continuously or during short grazing tests, and were used to investigate the influence of the vertical and horizontal components of the sward structure on defoliation by sheep.
In an experiment under continuous grazing, the defoliation intensity was greater for white clover compared with perennial ryegrass leaves (0·80 and 0·58 respectively). In spring, perennial ryegrass leaves were more defoliated than white clover leaves, whereas the reverse was observed in summer. The ratio of the proportion of white clover to perennial ryegrass leaves grazed was negatively correlated with the difference between the surface height of the perennial ryegrass and white clover rows in spring. In both spring and summer, white clover leaves of the same extended leaf length had a higher proportion of them grazed than perennial ryegrass leaves.
In another experiment, during short grazing tests with perennial ryegrass–white clover swards that were grazed at the same sward surface height and at the same white clover content as in the previous experiment, there were no significant differences in the proportion of white clover and perennial ryegrass leaves grazed between strips of the two species and thoroughly mixed structures. The proportion of white clover leaves grazed was higher than that of perennial ryegrass leaves.
These results show that the differential defoliation by sheep of perennial ryegrass and white clover leaves varies according to their vertical distribution in the mixed canopy, but is little affected by their horizontal distribution. Even small differences in sward surface height between mixed perennial ryegrass and white clover can affect diet selection by sheep to a rather large extent.  相似文献

Seven varieties or advanced breeding lines of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.), all of small leaf size, were grown separately in mixtures with perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) in an experiment encompassing three harvest years. Harvestable dry-matter (DM) yield measurements were taken of these mixtures and of perennial ryegrass monocultures under two management regimes: cutting and continuous sheep grazing. Considerable differences were observed in the harvestable DM yields of white clover, perennial ryegrass and total yields of the mixtures between plots containing different white clover varieties. White clover yields were generally higher under cutting, and perennial ryegrass yields were higher under grazing. The difference between perennial ryegrass yield in monoculture and in mixture was variable. In the second harvest year, a significant interaction effect was seen between management and white clover variety for white clover yield but not for perennial ryegrass yield. The relationship between clover yield and grass yield differed between the two management regimes. Under cutting, a negative correlation was observed, indicative of competitive effects. However, under grazing, no such correlation was seen. Possible mechanisms underlying these outcomes are discussed.  相似文献

Four varieties of white clover (small-leaved cv. Aberystwyth S184. medium-leaved cv. Grasslands Huia and large-leaved cvs Linda and Olwen) were sown at 3 kg ha-1 together with 10 kg ha-1 perennial ryegrass cv. Talbot. Herbage productivity was measured for three harvest years, 1979-81, over four annual rates of fertilizer N (0,120,240 and 360 kg ha-1) and two closeness of cutting treatments (80 and 40 mm from ground level). A simulated grazing regime of six cuts per year at 3- to 6-week intervals was used.
Production of total herbage DM was increased by increasing N rate; mean annual DM production ranged from 783 1 ha-1 with no N to 11701 ha-1 at 360 kg ha-1 N. Mean herbage response to N (kg DM per kg N applied) was 73,90 and 108 for the three successive N increments relative to no N. Mean white clover DM production was reduced from 4 14t ha-1 with no N to 051 t ha-1 at 360 kg ha-1 N.
The large-leaved clover varieties were more productive than the small- or medium-leaved varieties at all N rates. Close cutting increased total herbage and white clover by a mean annual 16% and 31%. respectively. White clover varieties did not interact with either N rate or closeness of cutting.
It is concluded that repetitive N application over the growing season is incompatible with white clover persistence and production, even with large-leaved clover varieties or with close cutting, two factors which improved clover performance in the experimental swards.  相似文献

Plots of white clover ( Trifolium repens ) and perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) white clover were sown with and without fungicide seed treatment, seed treatment with Cytozyme (a proprietary growth-promoting agent) and pesticide granules (carbofuran or carbosulfan) mixed with the seed. Sowings were made in April/May at Hurley (1986 and 1987), Dorchester (1987) and Bronydd Mawr (1987). Only treatments containing pesticide significantly improved seedling emergence or herbage yield in the 1986 sowing. In 1987, pesticide greatly increased seedling emergence of ryegrass and clover at Hurley and Dorchester, but had no effect at Bronydd Mawr. At Hurley, herbage yield and the proportion of clover were more than doubled for up to a year, by chemical treatment after sowing in 1986.
Populations of plant parasitic nematodes were recorded at all sites and it is suggested that at Hurley and Dorchester seedlings with nematode damage were unable to survive the dry soil conditions that prevailed. In a subsequent pot experiment, pesticide granules controlled root endoparasitic nematodes and significantly increased seedling emergence of white clover in dry soil but had no effect in moist soil.  相似文献

The objective of this study, which was part of a larger grazing‐systems experiment, was to investigate the cumulative impact of three levels of grazing intensity on sward production, utilization and structural characteristics. Pastures were grazed by rotational stocking with Holstein–Friesian dairy cows from 10 February to 18 November 2009. Target post‐grazing heights were 4·5 to 5 cm (high; H), 4 to 4·5 cm (intermediate; I) and 3·5 to 4 cm (low; L). Detailed sward measurement were undertaken on 0·08 of each farmlet area. There were no significant treatment differences in herbage accumulated or in herbage harvested [mean 11·3 and 11·2 t dry matter (DM) ha?1 respectively]. Above the 3·5 cm horizon, H, I and L swards had 0·56, 0·62 and 0·67 of DM as leaf and 0·30, 0·23 and 0·21 of DM as stem respectively. As grazing severity increased, tiller density of grass species other than perennial ryegrass (PRG) decreased (from 3,350 to 2,780 and to 1771 tillers m?2 for H, I and L paddocks respectively) and the rejected area decreased (from 0·27 to 0·20 and to 0·10 for H, I and L paddocks respectively). These results indicate the importance of grazing management practice on sward structure and quality and endorse the concept of increased grazing severity as a strategy to maintain high‐quality grass throughout the grazing season. The findings are presented in the context of the need for intensive dairy production systems to provide greater quantities of high‐quality pasture over an extended grazing season, in response to policy changes with the abolition of EU milk quotas.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out in 1992 and 1993 to examine the effect of white clover content of perennial ryegrass/white clover swards on the performance of Limousin × Friesian heifers. Swards with low (L), medium (M) and high (H) white clover contents were established and managed by continuous variable stocking. A compressed sward height of 5·5 cm was maintained using a buffer fence to vary plot areas, with herbage surplus to grazing requirements cut, removed and yields measured. The mean white clover proportions for treatments L, M and H were 0·02, 0·19 and 0·18 in 1992 and 0·13, 0·16 and 0·31 in 1993 respectively. White clover contents of the swards reached a maximum in August and September, and differences between treatments diminished. There was no significant difference between treatments in the content of white clover in the swards in autumn 1993.
Liveweight gains of heifers increased asymptotically with increasing white clover content of the sward. Below a white clover herbage mass of 300 kg DM ha–1, there was little effect on liveweight gain, which was 0·70 kg day–1 over the grazing season. Between 400 and 450 kg DM ha–1 white clover, liveweight gains were 0·85–0·90 kg day–1. While clover content of the sward did not significantly affect utilized metabolizable energy output; the mean output over the grazing season in the two years from liveweight gain and herbage yield was 78 GJ ha–1. It is suggested that, using this grazing system, white clover reached an equilibrium with a mean herbage mass of about 400 kg DM ha–1 over the grazing season.  相似文献

Non‐pregnant, non‐lactating ewes grazed adjacent monocultures of white clover and perennial ryegrass with three sward surface height (SSH) combinations [6 cm white clover: 6 cm perennial ryegrass (c6g6), 3 cm white clover: 6 cm perennial ryegrass (c3g6), 3 cm white clover: 9 cm perennial ryegrass (c3g9)] at two stocking densities (21·3 or 29·8 ewes ha–1). Immediately prior to the experiment, all ewes grazed a c6g6 sward. Grazing time on each plant species was recorded during daylight over two 48 h‐test periods. Subsequently, herbage intake rates for each species at each SSH were measured allowing intakes of each species to be calculated. For the first 24 h of both test periods (D1), ewes on treatment c3g6 spent less time grazing white clover than those on treatment c6g6 (228 vs. 362 min) and more time grazing perennial ryegrass (360 vs. 182 min). Total grazing time on treatment c3g6 was more than on treatment c6g6 (587 vs. 544 min) but the difference was not significant. Perennial ryegrass intake was higher (895 vs. 452 g), and white clover intake (814 vs. 1687 g), total intake (1719 vs. 2140 g) and proportion of white clover in the diet (0·460 vs. 0·794) were lower for treatment c3g6 than treatment c6g6. There were no significant differences in total grazing time, grazing time on either species, proportion of grazing time on white clover or proportion of white clover in the diet between treatment c3g6 and treatment c3g9. However, the higher intake rate of perennial ryegrass in treatment c3g9 led to higher perennial ryegrass and total intakes. For the second 24 h of both test periods (D2), ewes on treatment c3g6 again spent more time grazing perennial ryegrass than on treatment c6g6 (270 vs. 161 min) but time spent grazing white clover was similar (318 vs. 308 min). Total grazing time was significantly higher on treatment c3g6 than on treatment c6g6 (588 vs. 469 min) but proportion of grazing time on white clover was similar (0·554 vs. 0·668). Perennial ryegrass intake was significantly higher for treatment c3g6 than for treatment c6g6 (672 vs. 402 g) while white clover intake was significantly lower (1140 vs. 1435 g) but total intake was similar (1812 vs. 1836 g). The proportion of white clover in the diet was significantly lower for treatment c3g6 (0.628 vs. 0.785) than for treatment c6g6. The only significant differences between treatments c3g6 and c3g9 were in perennial ryegrass intake (672 vs. 906 g) and in total intake (1812 vs. 2287 g). Intake of perennial ryegrass on treatment c3g9 was also significantly greater than on treatment c6g6 (906 vs. 402 g) and total intake was higher (2287 vs. 1836 g). At the higher stocking density, time spent grazing perennial ryegrass and perennial ryegrass intake were significantly lower on D1 and D2 while total grazing time was also significantly lower and proportion of time grazing white clover and proportion of white clover in the diet were significantly higher at the higher stocking rate on D2. The results indicate that behaviour changed over the 48 h observation period for treatments c3g6 and c3g9 but behaviour remained relatively constant for animals on treatment c6g6. Ewes traded off dietary preference against total intake by altering grazing times on perennial ryegrass and white clover to achieve maximum net benefit.  相似文献

Seven cultivars of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) (Kent, S184, Huia, Menna, Donna, Alice and Nesta) and a commercial mixture, ‘Ensign’, were strip-seeded into an upland perennial rye-grass (Lolium perenne L.) sward in late June 1986. Swards were first grazed by sheep, either on 5/6 August (early) or on 19/20 August (late) and then every 14–21 days (frequently) or 28–42 days (infrequently) during 1986, followed by a common grazing regime in 1987. During April to mid-June 1988 the swards received either a moderate amount of nitrogen or none and were cut frequently or once only in mid-June. Growth of individual seedlings was assessed before and after grazing during 1986 and stolon accumulation and distribution and sward colonization were assessed during 1987 and 1988. All cultivars emerged rapidly and satisfactorily and there were no consistent significant differences in the overall dry matter accumulation per seedling during establishment. During the first autumn the proportion of the aboveground biomass removed during grazing was smallest in Kent (c. 20%) and largest in Nesta (c. 40%). Kent and S184 produced most leaves and stolons and the greatest length of stolons per seedling and per individual stolon, and Nesta and Alice the fewest leaves and stolons and shortest stolons. Seedlings grazed early had heavier and longer stolons than those grazed late; those grazed frequently had more leaves, stolons and growing points than those grazed infrequently, especially following early grazing. During 1987 Kent and S184 had consistently the largest number of stolon growing points, and weight and length of stolons per unit area; these two cultivars and Nesta also colonized the sward more rapidly than the other cultivars. All cultivars contributed substantially and similarly to herbage production in late September. There were no residual effects of the 1986 treatments after the summer of 1987. During 1988 additions of nitrogen fertilizer at 100 kg N ha-1 or allowing the herbage to remain undefoliated between mid-April and mid-June both independently halved the number of stolon growing points per unit area; together they reduced it by 80%. Nitrogen also, on average, halved stolon weights but less so in Nesta, Alice and Huia and more so in all other cultivars. Infrequent defoliation greatly decreased stolon weights in Kent and S184 but had no significant effects on the other cultivars. Sward colonization was almost complete by June and entirely so by October for all cultivars in all treatments. Implications of the results for the after-management of strip-seeded white clover are discussed.  相似文献

The productivity of a mixed sward comprising perennial ryegrass cv. Fantoom and white clover cv. Aran was measured under eight defoliation management systems and two fertilizer N rates (0 and 75 kg ha-1) applied in spring. The defoliations involved a basic six-harvest simulated grazing system together with the interposition of silage cuts once or twice at varying times during the growing season; evaluation was made over three harvest years, 1983-85. Mean annual production of total herbage DM over the three years was 8.351 tha-1 without N and 9.49 tha-1 with 75 kg N ha-1, a mean response of 15.2 kg DM per kg applied N. The responses for individual treatments occurred mainly at the first cuts, whether for simulated grazing (a mean of 12 9 kg DM) or for silage (a mean of 259 kg DM); however, this influence of spring N was not sustained at other cuts over the season. Mean annual white clover DM production was 4.19 t ha-1 with no N and 3.32 t ha-1 with 75 kg ha-1 N, but the reduction due to N was not significant in any year. The mean amount of clover stolon DM present post harvest over all management systems was 1.33 t ha-1 with no N and 1.03 t ha-1 with 75 kg ha-1 N. Mean annual DM production of total herbage from the six-harvest system was 8.11 t ha-1 Compared with 8 88 t ha-1 (a 9% increase) from the systems with one silage cut and 9.241 ha-1 (a 14% increase) from the systems with two silage cuts. Corresponding white clover DM production was 4.02, 3 87 and 3 53 t ha-1, respectively, and mean stolon DM amounts post harvest, 1 12,1.15 and 1-23 t ha-1, respectively. It is concluded that grass/white clover swards are suitable for management systems which involve cutting for conservation. Spring N application did not greatly reduce white clover production in this experiment where white clover was at higher levels than are likely in farming practice and the swards were not grazed. More knowledge of spring N rates, and indeed of N application rates generally, would be advantageous in future assessment of silage cutting systems.  相似文献

Persistence of white clover (Trifolium repens) in mixtures was studied in a long-term experiment. Mixtures of two cultivars of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) with contrasting growth habits and three white clover cultivars differing in leaf size were sown in 1991 and evaluated at two cutting frequencies. During 1995 and 1996 mixtures with large-leaved white clover cv. Alice had the highest dry-matter (DM) content, clover and N yield, and the highest white clover content, and mixtures with medium-leaved Retor the lowest, whereas mixtures with small-leaved Gwenda yielded most grass DM. In 1995 averaged over cutting treatments and mixtures, the mixtures yielded 11·8 t DM ha?1 with a white clover content of 0·6; the apparent N fixation was 393 kg N ha?1. In 1996 these values declined to 8·5 t DM ha?1, 0·48 white clover and 236 kg N ha?1. There was no significant effect of cutting frequency on DM yield or white clover content, whereas the effects of grass cultivar were not consistent. In spring there was a peak in the DM production of the mixtures, coinciding with a peak in production of the grass component. However, in summer and autumn the seasonal pattern of DM production of the mixtures was similar to that of the white clover component. Both cultivars of perennial ryegrass showed the same seasonal response, but the seasonal growth pattern of white clover differed slightly between clover cultivars and cutting treatments. In later years only one cutting frequency was imposed, and no yield measurements were taken. White clover was judged to have performed well during 1997; the clover content in September was very high (0·76), whereas in October 1998 it was 0·45. Mixtures with Alice contained most white clover. Despite fluctuations in white clover content during 1991–98, all clover cultivars had persisted 7 years after sowing, irrespective of companion grass cultivar, at both cutting treatments.  相似文献

The influence of sward height at the time of slurry application on sward responses to slurry was investigated using perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne )/white clover ( Trifolium repens ) mini-swards under greenhouse conditions. Pig slurry, cattle slurry and a fertilizer control were applied either to: swards cut 1 d before slurry application to heights of 2, 4 or 8 cm (CH2, CH4 or CH8); or to swards cut to 4 cm with regrowth intervals of 1, 4 or 8 d before slurry application (RI1, RI4 and RI8). Scorch, smother and growth of marked clover stolons and grass tillers were monitored after slurry application. Dry-matter yields of both species were recorded over two harvests. Electrolyte leakage from leaves was used to assess leaf damage. Both slurries increased leakage, which was greatest from clover leaves, with biggest increases caused by pig slurry. Yield responses to slurry application varied with plant species and sward height. Reduced grass growth after slurry application to long swards (CH8, RI4, RI8) was probably caused by greater smother. In short swards (CH2), grass leaf growth was not depressed following slurry application but grass yields were reduced. Ammonia volatilization losses may have been greater in both long and short swards, contributing to yield reductions. Yield responses to slurry were greatest in swards cut to 4 cm, 1 d before application.  相似文献

In plots of perennial ryegrass and white clover, regular treatment with chlorpyrifos and methiocarb more than trebled the clover content of the sward, compared with untreated plots, in just over 2 years from sowing. Chlorpyrifos alone accounted for most of the effect, which was attributed mainly to the control of Sitona lepidus. Combined treatment increased total herbage dry matter yield by 4·24 t ha−1 during this period but had little effect on grass-only plots. Methiocarb appeared to have contributed by assisting earlier establishment of clover, but otherwise had little effect until slugs, which were initially uncommon, became more abundant in the later stages of the experiment. The effect of slug control was most noticeable in a cultivar of low cyanogenic potential. This factor did not influence the effect of chlorpyrifos.  相似文献

A series of twenty-four swards containing different proportions of white clover (0·20-0·25) and perennial ryegrass were created by using different seed mixtures, herbicide applications and previous cutting Frequencies. These swards were used to study the diet of oesophageally-fistulated wether sheep which grazed the various swards for a 30-min period after 1, 2 and 3 weeks of regrowth.
The proportion of white clover in the diet was generally greater than that in the sward. Fifty-seven percent of the variation in the proportion of white clover in the diet could be attributed to the proportion of white clover in the sward. White clover and perennial ryegrass leaf and stem were grazed to the same height and the proportion of white clover in the grazed horizon of the sward explained 83% of the variation in the proportion of white clover in the diet. The proportion of white clover in the diet was greater than the proportion in the grazed horizon of the sward in week 3 of regrowth, but not in weeks 1 and 2, and greater when the proportion of white clover in the grazed horizon was lower than 0·20. Both these observations were interpreted as indicating selection for white clover by the sheep within the grazed horizon.
There was a positive and linear relationship between the depth of the grazed horizon and sward height which, together with the relationship between the proportion of white clover in the grazed horizon and in the diet, would allow the prediction of the proportion of white clover of the diet from the height and the white clover content of the grazed horizon of the sward.  相似文献

In two experiments with ryegrass/white clover mixtures, the proportion of clover was measured before and after cuts which removed 8-75% of above-ground biomass. Cutting was found to reduce the proportion of clover leaf area in the crop in both experiments, sometimes by as much as two-thirds, and the proportion of clover dry weight, by up to half, in one of them. That is, the harvested material contained a greater proportion of clover than did the sward before the cut. This disproportionate removal of clover was due to clover having a greater proportion of its leaf near the top of the canopy than grass. It showed that preferential removal of clover occurs as a result of the purely passive selection by a mower, not only as a result of grazing by animals which may be capable of active as well as passive selection.
Despite the disadvantage to clover of losing more of its leaf area than grass, and in some cases more of its dry weight also, when the mixture was cut, the clover content of the sward did not decrease during the growing season as a whole. This was because, where no nitrogen fertilizer was applied, clover had a greater relative growth rate (RGR) than its companion grass during the growth periods between cuts and this increased its percentage of the mixture. Even where nitrogen was applied, clover equalled the RGR of grass and maintained its proportion of the crop, except in one instance.  相似文献

The effects of three defoliation treatments upon the performance of eight white clover varieties when grown with S23 perennial ryegrass were investigated. These treatments included a cutting only regime as used in National List trials and rotational and continuous sheep grazing.
There were significant ( P <0·001) differences between treatments, and the ranking of clover varieties also differed between the three treatments. The significance of this finding is discussed in relation to the evaluation of breeding material and varieties prior to recommendation to farmers.
Clover yields were less under grazing than cutting. This was due mainly to the selective grazing and removal of stolon material which occurred in the former treatments. The selection by sheep (six Coopworth ewe hoggets, 44·3 ± 4·6 kg live weight) and goats (six Saanen/Anglo‐Nubian yearling males, 38·1 ± 3·8 kg live weight) for perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and white clover (Trifolium repens) and for sward height was measured in two experiments involving paired turves. Pairs of turves with herbage of differing height and of either the same or different plant species were offered. One sward (fixed height species, FHS) was always offered at 130 mm and the other (variable height species, VHS) at 130, 90 or 50 mm. Turves (450 mm × 220 mm) were cut to a soil depth of 100–150 mm from areas of perennial ryegrass and white clover regrown to the desired height after previously being cut to 30 mm. Each turf in a pair was weighed (±1 g) before and after grazing by penned animals maintained on a barley‐based pelleted diet. The number of prehending bites taken from each turf was recorded over a grazing period (128 ± 12 s). Bite mass, bite rate and intake rate were calculated. As the sward height of the VHS turf declined, an increasing proportion of the diet was selected from the 130 mm turf. When averaged over all height contrasts, both animal species selected a higher proportion (0·776 ± 0·026) of their diet from 130‐mm white clover than from 130‐mm perennial ryegrass (0·591 ± 0·018) turves. On average, goats selected a higher proportion (0·721 ± 0·022) of their dry‐matter (DM) intake from the 130‐mm turf than sheep (0·646 ± 0·019), but the effect was not consistent. In contrasts with perennial ryegrass as the VHS (and both perennial ryegrass and white clover as FHS), the proportion of the diet selected from the 130‐mm turf was very similar for both animal species. However, with white clover as the VHS (and both perennial ryegrass and white clover as FHS), goats selected a higher proportion of their intake from the 130‐mm turf to the extent that in the 130‐mm perennial ryegrass/50‐mm white clover contrast sheep showed as strong selection for 50‐mm white clover as goats did for 130‐mm perennial ryegrass. This lesser selection of goats for white clover as its height in a sward declines is likely to contribute to the higher white clover content observed in swards grazed by goats. Bite mass was greater on white clover (246 ± 5 mg DM bite–1) than on perennial ryegrass (173 ± 5 mg DM bite–1) and was greater for goats (255 ± 6 mg DM bite–1) than for sheep (195 ± 5 mg DM bite–1). Bite rate was greater on perennial ryegrass (45·9 ± 1·0 bites min–1) than on white clover (39·9 ± 1·0 bites min–1) and was greater for sheep (45·5 ± 1·1 bites min–1) than for goats (42·5 ± 1·1 bites min–1). Apparent intake rate by both sheep and goats was lower (mean, 5·0 ± 0·29 g DM min–1) on 130 mm perennial ryegrass/white clover than on 130 mm perennial ryegrass/perennial ryegrass (7·0 ± 0·27 g DM min–1), but was higher (9·62 ± 0·29 g DM min–1) on 130‐mm white clover/perennial ryegrass than on 130‐mm white clover/white clover (8·2 ± 0·29 g DM min–1) combinations.  相似文献

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is by far the most widely sown grass species in Ireland. Genotype × environment (G × E) interactions are a frequent occurrence in herbage yield evaluations. The objectives were to determine (i) the nature and relative magnitudes of the pertinent G × E interaction variance components for dry matter yield of perennial ryegrass sward plots in Ireland and (ii) the optimal allocation of replicates, locations and years in a testing programme. Sixteen perennial ryegrass cultivars were sown at six locations throughout Ireland between 2000 and 2004. Plots from each sowing were harvested for 2 consecutive years under a simulated mixed grazing and conservation management programme. The largest component of the G × E variance was generally genotype × location × year emphasizing the need for evaluation of genotypes across locations and years to adequately characterize genotypes for differences in yield. Relative differences among genotypes from year to year and location to location were due mainly to changes in genotype rankings. Weather was estimated to have a greater effect on annual variation in herbage yield than age of stand. The optimum allocation of resources for a testing programme was estimated at four replicates per location, and either two locations and 3 sowing years or three locations and 2 sowing years with 2 harvest years for each sowing year.
