Kennebec potatoes were evaluated for the effect of storage temperature and time on tuber composition and on mealiness as measured by extrusion force of baked potato and Brabender viscosity of raw, lyophilized tissue. Potatoes from three specific gravity classes, 1.072, 1.082, and 1.090 (±0.001), were evaluated initially and after storage at 1.7°C for 2 and 3 mo., 7.2°C for 2 and 3 mo., 1.7°C for 2 mo. followed by 7.2°C for 1 mo., and 7.2°C for 2 mo. followed by 1.7°C for 1 mo. There were highly significant differences in mealiness associated with the storage treatments and with specific gravity. Mealiness decreased as temperature decreased. Mealiness estimates of tubers from the storage temperature reversal treatments were intermediate to those of the 7.2°C and 1.7°C treated tubers. Simple correlation analysis showed extrusion force and Brabender viscosity to be significantly and positively related to each other, to total starch and to swollen starch and significantly but inversely related to glucose and to the sum of glucose plus sucrose. Specific gravity and total solids were significantly but less highly positively correlated with both physical measurements. Multiple correlation-regression analysis showed only total starch to be significantly related to mealiness independent of the other compositional variables.  相似文献

Seven named varieties and three numbered selections from the University of Maine potato breeding program were compared for chip color at various conditions and lengths of storage. Although all selections tested were equal to or better than Kennebec in chip color, only Allagash Russet equaled Monona. Storage at 45° F (7.2° C) produced acceptable chip color at all time periods tested. After long term storage at 45° F, reconditioning at 55° F(12.8° C) was ineffective in improving chip color. Following storage at 38° F (3.3° C) acceptable chip color could be produced only by reconditioning at 70° F (21.1° C) for at least two weeks.  相似文献

Manipulation of storage environment to provide favorable conditions for wound healing immediately after harvest reducedAlternaria solani tuber infection. Prestorage of tubers at 15.6°C for three weeks before final storage at 10°C normally maintained for commercial storage of potato chip stocks resulted in fewer and smaller lesions than constant storage at 10°C or 4.4°C or prestorage for varying periods at these temperatures. Prestorage of potatoes at a low temperature (4.4°C) for 1–3 months resulted in moreA. solani infection suggesting that low temperatures may inhibit the wound healing process more than they reduce rates ofA. solani infection or disease development. Variations in relative humidities above 75% did not have an appreciable effect on the wound healing process nor onA. solani infection.  相似文献

Thermal requirements per developmental stage, offspring production, and percent survival of three isolates of the green peach aphid,Myzus persicae (Sulz.), were determined over a range of constant temperatures from 12.4°–29.4°C. Isolates were collected from Pennsylvania, Maine, and Washington State potato producing regions. Offspring produced, survival, and thermal requirements were not different for all three isolates. Offspring production increased from 12.4°–15.6°C and then decreased as temperature increased. Percent survival averaged 78.2% except at 29.4°C where only 26.7% survived to reproduce. Thermal requirements, with 4°C as the lower developmental threshold, were 25.2, 27.1, 30.9, 30.7, 20.4, 74.2, 201.6 and 135.7 degree days, respectively, for instars 1–4, prereproductive adults, reproductive adults, longevity, and generation time. Data were used as the basis for a computer forecast system to predict aphid population development in potato fields.  相似文献

Degradation of harvested tubers due to water loss, sprouting, and disease can cause severe economic difficulties in the cultivation of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum). This study evaluated the storage losses of new varieties of potato and determined the sprouting dates of potatoes stored at different temperatures. Additionally, this study evaluated the influence of weather conditions during the vegetative growth period on the date of sprouting in storage. After storage at three different temperatures (3, 5, and 8 °C), we estimated natural losses and losses caused by sprouting or the development of disease. The potato varieties stored at 3 °C, and 5 °C had similar weight losses (8.8% and 9.3%, respectively), but the potatoes stored at 8 °C had higher losses (10.8%). The average potato losses caused by disease ranged from 0.6% to 10%. The onset of sprouting of potatoes stored at 8 °C depended on the variety and began in the 20 day of December. Storage at 5 °C delayed sprouting by about 50 days compared with storage at 8 °C. Weather conditions (hot and rainy) during vegetative growth of the plants also influenced sprouting date, natural losses, and the amount of disease during storage. Our data showed a significant correlation between the hydrothermal coefficient during the vegetative period and the date of sprouting of potatoes during storage.  相似文献

Summary The sugar content of samples of potatoes, cv. Majestic, was varied by storage for 4 weeks at 2, 4.5, 6, 10 and 15.5°C, before irradiation with 10 krad. With initial sucrose contents of 0.14–0.37% FW (tubers from 4.5–15.5°C) the marked temporary increase in sucrose, as reported previously, was observed, reaching a maximum after 3–7 days before falling rapidly to a level rather higher than in non-irradiated tubers. Tubers from 2°C, with 1.4% sucrose, showed an immediate drop in this after irradiation, succeeded within 3 days by a rise to values not significantly different from the controls. Irradiation caused a significant increase in reducing sugar content, for a period of up to 7 days in sweetened tubers, but for 21 days or more in unsweetened tubers. Previous storage at the different temperatures had some permanent residual effect upon the sugar content of the controls during subsequent storage for up to 90 days at 10°C.  相似文献

The prebiotic effect of different concentrations of inulin (0, 1 and 2%) on the growth and survival of Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) CECT 220 in blended carrot and orange juices was investigated after 24 h of fermentation, during 30 days of storage at 4 °C and through the phases of gastrointestinal digestion after different storage periods. Microbiological and chemical determinations were also carried out in all juices. The lactic fermentation increased the shelf life of the fermented juices with inulin. The hygienic-sanitary quality in fermented juices was better than the control juices. During storage, the inulin improved the viability of LP and the monosaccharide concentration remained higher with respect to the juice without inulin (40% lower). At 30 days, the fermented juices with 2% inulin after in vitro digestion presented the highest survival of L. plantarum.  相似文献

Summary Tubers of the potato cultivars Record, Wilja, Pentland Dell and Brodick (formerly clone 137371) were sampled before and after storage at either 4°C or 10°C. Reducing sugar content stayed constant during storage at 10°C in all four cultivars but rose greatly during the first 6–12 weeks of storage at 4°C in Record, Wilja and Pentland Dell but not in Brodick. Amylolytic activity was determined after 5 weeks storage using blockedp-nitrophenyl maltoheptaoside as substrate for α-amylase,p-nitrophenyl maltopentaoside as substrate for β-amylase, andp-nitrophenylglucopyranoside as substrate for α-glucosidase. The values obtained from tubers stored at 4°C were higher than those from tubers stored at 10°C, the differences being much less in Brodick than in the other three cultivars.  相似文献

To study the sensitivity of inter-subspecific hybrid rice to climatic conditions, the spikelet fertilized rate (SFR) of four types of rice including indica-japonica hybrid, intermediate hybrid, indica and japonica were analyzed during 2000-2004. The inter-subspecific hybrids showed lower SFR, and much higher fluctuation under various climatic conditions than indica and japonica rice, showing the inter-subspecific hybrids were sensitive to ecological conditions. Among 12 climatic factors, the key factor affecting rice SFR was temperature, with the most significant factor being the average temperature of the seven days around panicle flowering (T7). A regressive equation of SFR-temperature by T7, and a comprehensive synthetic model by four important temperature indices were put forward. The optimum temperature for inter-subspecific hybrids was estimated to be 26.1-26.6℃, and lower limit of safe temperature to be 22.5-23.3℃ for panicle flowering, showing higher by averagely 0.5℃ and 1.7℃, respectively, to be compared with indica and japonica rice. This suggested that inter-subspecific hybrids require proper climatic conditions. During panicle flowering, the suitable daily average temperature was 23.3-29.0℃, with the fittest one at 26.1-26.6℃. For an application example, optimum heading season for inter-subspecific hybrids in key rice growing areas in China was as same as common pure lines, while inferior limit for safe date of heading was about a ten-day period earlier than those of common pure lines.  相似文献

Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) is a potential alternative crop being developed for fiber production. Because planting area varies dramatically from year to year, seed supplies may greatly exceed use so that the excess seed must be stored for one to several years. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of seed storage duration at 10 °C on germination, vigor, emergence, and yield. Replicated trials were established at Starkville, MS in 1999 and 2000 to evaluate field emergence and biomass yield of kenaf seed from five ‘Everglades 41’ (‘E41’) harvest year seed lots stored at 10 °C in ambient relative humidity for up to 4 years. Germination of these same seed lots under standard (20–30 °C) and cool (20 °C) temperatures, and seed vigor was evaluated over time. Field emergence was the same for the different seed storage durations up to 4 years, but was directly affected by drought conditions for each planted year. Biomass yields ranged from 12.39 to 14.57 Mg ha−1 in 1999 and 16.82 to 18.47 Mg ha−1 in 2000, but were not different between storage durations. Seed germination remained greater than 80% regardless of storage duration. Electrolyte leakage, based on conductivity, was 38–50% less with freshly harvested seed than seed stored for 4 years at 10 °C. However, neither the conductivity nor accelerated aging test were reliable predictors of field emergence. Kenaf seed stored up to 4 years at 10 °C retained germination rates acceptable for commercial use. Neither field emergence nor biomass yield was affected by seed storage duration.  相似文献

Sage Russet was released in 2009 by Oregon State University, in cooperation with the USDA-ARS and the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Idaho and Washington. It is a product of the Northwest Potato Variety (Tri-State) Development Program. Sage Russet has a medium-early maturity and produces long, somewhat flattened tubers with medium russeting of the skin. Total yields of Sage Russet are similar to those of Russet Burbank and Ranger Russet, but are significantly higher than those of Russet Norkotah. Sage Russet has significantly higher U.S. No.1 yields than Russet Burbank, Russet Norkotah, and Ranger Russet. It can be grown as an early or late crop with high U.S. No.1 yields and minimal internal defects. It achieved very high merit scores in processing and fresh market in Western Regional trials and can be considered for both markets. Sage Russet has a medium to high fertility requirements with high nitrogen use efficiency and medium storage capability. Sage Russet has moderate specific gravity and produces lighter fry color than the industry standard varieties. The color of fried strips following tuber storage at 4.4 °C and 7.2 °C is significantly lighter for Sage Russet than the control varieties, indicating good cold sweetening resistance. Chemical analyses have shown that Sage Russet has higher protein and vitamin C content than control varieties. Sage Russet is moderately resistant to early dying, early blight, and common scab, is resistant to tuber late blight, but susceptible to Fusarium wilt and is prone to shatter bruise.  相似文献

The bacterial soft rot potential in potato tubers was affected by differences in temperature between tubers and suspensions ofErwinia carotovora at the time of inoculation by immersion. In general, disease severity after incubation was higher when tuber temperatures were higher as opposed to equal to or lower than that of water containing cells of the bacterium. Disease severity was also greater when tubers were stored at 20° to 23°C in contrast to 4° or 26° to 30°C for 16–18 h prior to immersion. Tubers with a pulp temperature of 8°C were more prone to bruise injury as compared with those at 18°C when struck with a pendulum type bruising instrument. When the injured tubers were inoculated and incubated, most bruises became infected with soft rot bacteria.  相似文献

Garlic (Allium sativum) cloves were stored at ambient temperature and 4 °C for periods up to six months to establish the effect of position of the individual clove within the bulb and of low storage temperature on the composition of several flavours precursors and other organic sulphur compounds, measured by gradient High Pressure Liquid Chromatography. Levels of alliin, γ glutamyl allyl cysteine sulphoxide and γ glutamyl isoallyl cysteine sulphoxide were statistically significantly higher in outer than in inner cloves. There was no statistically significant change in levels of alliin, the major flavour precursor, in cloves stored at 4 °C, remaining in the average range 17.5±3.8–39.1±7.5 mM. However, isoalliin increased significantly during storage at 4 °C, rising from an average 0.6±0.2 mM (outer cloves)—0.7±0.4 mM (inner cloves) to 7.1±1.7 mM (outer cloves)—4.1±0.7 mM (inner cloves). A decline in other sulphur-containing compounds, most likely to be the peptides γ-glutamyl allylcysteine sulphoxide and γ-glutamyl isoallylcysteine sulphoxide, occurred at the same time and possibly contributed to the increase in the flavour precursor compounds. The degree of chemical changes during storage will be of interest to the food and pharmaceutical industries.  相似文献

The effects of fungicides and biofungicides applied during the growing season in combination with storage applications to control potato storage diseases caused by oomycete pathogens were evaluated. The in-season treatments included in-furrow and foliar application of mefenoxam or phosphorous acid and foliar application of Bacillus subtilis. Storage treatments included phosphorous acid, B. subtilis and a 3-way mixture of azoxystrobin, fludioxonil and difenoconazole. These products were tested for control of tuber late blight, Pythium leak and pink rot at 10 °C (cv. FL1879) or 4 °C (cv. Goldrush). The combination of phosphorous acid in the field and during storage significantly reduced tuber blight development. Field treatment with B. subtilis, mefenoxam or phosphorous acid combined with the storage treatment of phosphorous acid significantly reduced Pythium leak development. Interaction of field treatments, mefenoxam or phosphorous acid, with storage treatments, phosphorous acid or the 3-way mixture of azoxystrobin, fludioxonil and difenoconazole significantly reduced pink rot incidence.  相似文献

The basis of difference in field growth and yield in Netted Gem potato plants grown from greenhouse transplants, from seed which was greensprouted for two weeks prior to planting and from seed which was retained in storage until planting was studied by measuring changes in plant dry weight and leaf area throughout the season. Cut seed, approximately 70g in size, which were either two or four-cut from 142g or 283g mother tubers respectively, were used in the comparisons. Transplants were started in 7.6 cm peat pots in the greenhouse and were transplanted to the field when 10 cm high. The greensprouted seed was cut from mother tubers which had been sprouted under fluorescent light at 15–18°C for two weeks producing strong sprouts 5 mm long. Transplants, greensprouted seed and seed from mother tubers held in 3°C storage were all planted in the field May 30, 1974, coinciding with commercial plantings of Netted Gem in the province. Backup field experiments, comparing similarly treated greensprouted and storage seed and transplants, were conducted in 1974 and 1975 but were not subjected to growth analysis. All plantings were grown on a Riverbank sandy loam soil. The 1974 growing season in New Brunswick was excellent while that for 1975 was dry and required extensive irrigation. The use of transplants established a substantial advantage in terms of early emergence and yields were consistently and significantly greater than those of greensprouted-seed and unsprouted-seed plants. The transplant yield advantage was attributed to the fact that tuberization was advanced substantially compared with the latter two types. Higher relative growth rates were associated with later emergence so that the rate for plants growing from unsprouted seed was greater than that for plants growing from greensprouted plants which, in turn, was superior to that of transplants. This pattern was maintained through the season. Consequently, small advantages in time of emergence, such as that obtained with greensprouted-seed plants, were not accompanied by significant yield differences. Canopy size decreased as emergence was delayed and canopy size differences were determined largely by the amount of branching. As canopy size decreased and emergence was delayed, the net assimilation rate was found to increase.  相似文献

The effects of solarization, metham-sodium (12·5 or 25 ml/m2) and combined action of the two treatments (soil solarization plus metham-sodium) on the viability of Verticillium dahliae (VD) and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum (FOV) added to field soil were compared in two successive field experiments. In both experiments solarization combined with metham-sodium was more effective in destroying both pathogens as compared with solarization or metham-sodium alone. In the earlier experiment, when soil temperatures were higher, soil solarization and combined treatments were more effective in controlling VD and FOV than in the later experiment. The effect of metham-sodium on V. dahliae microsclerotia was studied in open and sealed containers incubated at 25° and 35°C. The fumigant dose required to kill 50% of the microsclerotia at 25°C was four times higher at 25°C than at 35°C. Toxicity of the chemical was similar in open and sealed containers. This and field experiment results suggest that the higher toxicity observed under plastic cover in the field is due to synergistic interaction between solarization and metham-sodium. Combined solarization and metham-sodium killed more propagules more quickly than solarization alone; these results suggested that the period over which effective solarization can be used is longer than previously thought and that the time needed to solarize the soil for control of these pathogens is less.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on life cycle of the solenopsis mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley, on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) was assessed under laboratory conditions at ten constant temperatures (18–40 °C). The development duration of female and male nymphal instars linearly decreased with the increase in temperature from 18 to 32 °C. Cumulative developmental time of females ranged from 43.9 d (18 °C) to 15.0 d (32 °C). Survival of crawlers to adulthood was lowest (<53%) at 20 and 36 °C and highest (80%) at 32 °C. The solenopsis mealybug exhibited obligate sexual ovoviviparous reproduction and the pre-oviposition period in mated females showed a significant decreasing trend between 20 °C (23.0 d) and 30 °C (9.5 d). The oviposition period of 10.2–11.5 d at ≥25 °C was nearly half the duration than at 20 °C and the highest fecundity (245 eggs + crawlers) was observed at 30 °C. Longevity of mated females was significantly prolonged at 20 °C (46.0 d) compared to 30 °C (21.4 d). Proportion of females was highest (97.5%) at 25 °C. Males required higher degree-days (363.6) for their cumulative development compared to females (317.5). Lower temperature thresholds estimated from the linear model for cumulative female and male development were 11.7 and 10.1 °C, respectively. The estimated optimum temperature thresholds for nymphal instars (32–33.4 °C) from β type distribution function were closer to the observed maximum developmental rate compared to Lactin-2 model. The population trend index using survival, fecundity, and sex ratio of P. solenopsis with an initial population of 100 crawlers in the Morris-Watt life table model indicated a potential population increase of 170.3 and 97.6 times at 30 and 35 °C, respectively, in the next generation. The usefulness of the information on the temperature-dependent life cycle of P. solenopsis in understanding its field abundance and distribution on cotton and implications for management is discussed.  相似文献

The curative antifungal activity of postharvest sodium ethylparaben (SEP) treatments against citrus green mold (GM) and blue mold (BM) was determined on different citrus species and cultivars artificially inoculated with Penicillium digitatum or Penicillium italicum and incubated at 20 °C and 90% RH for 7 d or stored at 5 °C and 90% RH for 8 weeks plus 7 d of shelf-life at 20 °C. The best concentration was selected in in vivo primary screenings with ‘Valencia’ oranges. SEP at 80 mM was tested at 20, 50 or 62 °C for 30, 60 or 150 s in small-scale trials to determine the best dip treatment conditions. Dips of 80 mM SEP at 20 °C for 60 s were selected and applied alone or in combination with 25 μL L−1 of the conventional fungicide imazalil (SEP + IMZ 25). Imazalil at the very low concentrations of 25 (IMZ 25) or 50 μL L−1 (IMZ 50) was also tested. Effectiveness of SEP alone at 20 °C for 60 s was significantly higher on oranges (cvs. ‘Valencia’ and ‘Lanelate’) than on mandarins (cvs. ‘Clemenules’, ‘Nadorcott’ and ‘Ortanique’), with GM and BM incidence reductions of up to 57–73% after 7 d at 20 °C. SEP was compatible with IMZ 25 and consistently improved its performance, irrespective of citrus cultivars and storage conditions. All treatments were less effective on ‘Clemenules’ mandarins. On ‘Valencia’ oranges stored for 8 weeks at 5 °C and 7 d at 20 °C, the combined treatment was significantly more effective than the single treatments (reductions of GM and BM incidence of about 96–93% and 55–39%, respectively). In additional tests, SEP, IMZ 25 and the combination applied at 20 °C for 60 s prevented GM on ‘Valencia’ oranges treated, inoculated with P. digitatum 24 h later and incubated at 20 °C for 7 d. It can be concluded from these results that SEP might be an integrating nonpollutant control alternative to be included in citrus postharvest disease control programs in the future.  相似文献

Fresh and stored maize (white and blue) tortillas were evaluated for physicochemical, rheological and structural characteristics assessed by calorimetry, x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, dynamic viscoelastic tests, and high-performance size-exclusion chromatography. Two endotherms were found in studies of fresh and stored tortillas. The low temperature endotherm (50–56 °C) was due to reorganized (retrograded) amylopectin, while the high temperature endotherm (105–123 °C) was attributed to retrograded amylose. The enthalpy value for the lower temperature transition was minor than that of the high temperature transition. Fresh tortillas showed an amorphous starch arrangement by x-ray diffraction study. Stored samples showed the presence of peaks at 2θ = 17o and 23o, indicating re-crystallization of starch components. FTIR results confirmed the development of higher levels of starch crystals during storage. Differences in the viscoelastic parameters were also observed between fresh and stored samples. At the longest storage times, white tortillas were more rigid than blue tortillas. Molar mass values for starch increased for both white and blue tortillas as storage time progressed, though relatively higher values were obtained for white tortillas. More starch reorganization occurred in white tortillas, in accordance to calorimetric, x-ray diffraction, FTIR and rheological results. These results corroborate that changes occurring in tortillas during storage are related to reorganization of starch components, and the maize variety more than the color plays an important role.  相似文献

Gelatinisation and retrogradation of starch in wheat flour systems and whole wheat grains were studied using DSC and the impact of these events on starch digestibility was investigated. Gelatinisation of starch was possible in wheat flours with more than 60% moisture content (dwb) and gelatinised samples had higher digestibility values. Retrogradation of starch was studied with partially and fully cooked (boiled at 100 °C for 12 min and 32 min, respectively) wheat grains that were subjected to storage at 22 °C for 48 h. Stored samples had lower digestibility values when compared to the freshly cooked counterparts. The effect of moisture on retrogradation was studied with fully cooked wheat grains that were dried to a range of moisture contents (14.6–35.9%, wwb) and stored at 20 °C for 24 h. Retrogradation enthalpy increased with increasing moisture content; however, digestibility values did not reflect the changes in retrogradation enthalpy. The possibility of estimating the degree of retrogradation in fully cooked grains (32 min cooking) was investigated using a wheat flour-water system. The retrogradation enthalpy of fully cooked grains was slightly higher than the wheat flour-water system (at a moisture content of 49%, wwb) during the course of storage at 22 °C.  相似文献
