A provenance trial of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) planted in 1969 at Matrand, Eidskog, Norway was apparently attacked by Gremmeniella abietina in 1984/85. In late autumn the damage was recorded separately on the lower and upper halves of the trees. The material ranged in latitude from 40.25°N to 56.28°N, and in altitude from 2 850 to 450 m a.s.l., highest in interior western United States and lowest in western Canada. The most heavily attacked sources were those from southern latitudes and from high elevations. The attack frequency changed gradually from south to north. In order to avoid attack by G. abietina, only well‐adapted provenances should be used. 相似文献

Gremmeniella abietina grew well in media with pectin as the sole carbon source. The fungus secreted at least one enzyme with polygalacturonase activity, and this was induced by addition of pectin to the culture medium. 相似文献

Abstract Biomass, total nitrogen (N) and total carbon (C) stocks were determined in trees, roots, field vegetation and soil in plots given two different site preparation treatments, deep soil cultivation (DSC) approximately 50?cm deep and patch scarification (PS), at three locations in Sweden 10?years after treatment. One location was planted with Pinus contorta, one with Picea abies and one with a mixture of P. abies and Pinus sylvestris. No differences were found in total ecosystem (trees, roots, field vegetation and soil) C and N stocks between the DSC and PS plots. In the DSC plots the tree biomass, tree N and C contents and total biomass were higher than in the PS plots, but the opposite was found for stocks in field vegetation. Biomass and C stocks in the total vegetation (trees, roots and field vegetation) were higher in the DSC plots. However, vegetation N stocks did not differ between the soil treatments, probably because the combined amount of leaf tissue in the trees and field vegetation did not differ between them. The proportions of biomass allocated to roots, stems and needles did not differ between the two treatments. However, the rooting was deeper in DSC plots, possibly because nutrient availability was higher, and subsoil density lower, following DSC than following PS. 相似文献

Uni- and binucleate Rhizoctonia and Pythiaceae fungi were isolated from roots of dieback seedlings. Only binucleate Rhizoctonia strains were present in the roots of healthy seedlings. In pathogenicity tests, uninucleate Rhizoctonia sp. were pathogenic and binucleate Rhizoctonia spp. non-pathogenic. Pythium ultimum var. ultimum and Phytophthora undulata were the only Pythiaceae fungi that killed 12-week-old seedlings. 相似文献

Browsing by large herbivores on planted and naturally regenerated conifer seedlings (Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris) was recorded in 104 clear‐cuts in east‐central Sweden during 1990 and in 47 clear‐cuts in 1991. The number of seedlings browsed and the browsing patterns were analysed in relation to seedling type. Browsing frequencies were also compared between forest stands with different site productivities and subjected to different management practices. The variation in the number of seedlings browsed in 1990 was explained mainly by seedling category. Among both planted and naturally regenerated seedlings, pine was browsed more than spruce. Two‐year‐old containerized seedlings of spruce was browsed more than 4‐yr‐old bare‐rooted spruce. In 1991, browsing was more equal among species and seedling types. Number of seedlings with their leader browsed and the amount of biomass left after browsing differed significantly between seedling types. Seedlings that had been browsed in 1990 experienced significantly higher browsing frequencies in 1991 when compared with unbrowsed seedlings. The effects of stand characteristics were not found to be significant. 相似文献

The mycelial growth of 24 isolates of types A and B of Gremmeniella abietina (Lagerb.) Morelet, collected in northern Finland and the Kola peninsula, Russia, was studied on malt agar plus pine needle extract at 18°C and 5°C. Great variation occurred within both types, and the results suggest that several isolates per stand are needed to represent one local isolate, if responses of G. abietina mycelia are studied on artificial media. 相似文献

Genotypic variation in susceptibility to Gremmeniella abietina, an economically important fungal pathogen of conifers, was studied by artificially inoculating 23 - yr - old grafted plants of six Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) clones in a seed orchard. Two fungal isolates were used. The mycelium was inserted into the current year shoots in late winter and the length of the necrotic lesion caused by the fungus was measured the next spring. The growth and male flower production of the experimental shoots were also measured. The development of symptoms did not vary among the clones, but the location of the grafts within the orchard statistically significantly affected the length of necrosis. The clones differed significantly in regard to height and the production of male and female flowers. Differences in flowering intensity among the clones were not connected with the development of G. abietina. At the level of the single shoot, the production of male flowers correlated positively with the length of necrosis. The length of necrosis correlated negatively with the length of current and previous year shoots. The ability of the two fungal isolates to cause necrosis differed significantly. 相似文献

Abstract The development of cracks and changes in appearance have been investigated on radial and tangential sections of pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and spruce (Picea abies Karst.) after exposure outdoors for 61 months. The degradation of the sections has also been studied at the micro-level. The annual ring orientation was the most important factor affecting crack development on weathering. After 61 months of outdoor exposure, the tangential sections of spruce had 1.7–2.2 times greater mean total crack length per area unit than the corresponding radial sections. In pine, the total crack length per area unit on the tangential sections was 2.2–2.6 times greater than that on the radial sections. Tangential and radial sections show the same colour change as a result of weathering. Tangential sections have more and deeper cracks than radial surfaces. The cracks on the tangential sections occur frequently in both earlywood and latewood. On radial sections, cracks occur primarily at the annual ring borders, but to a certain extent also in the earlywood. Decomposition of the cell wall takes place in both radial and tangential cell walls, and cracks tend to follow the fibril orientation in the S2-layer of the cell wall. The radial cell wall of the earlywood has a large number of pits which are degraded at an early stage. 相似文献

Abstract We evaluated the performance of two methods for estimating stem volume increment at individual tree level with respect to bias due to random measurement errors. Here, growth is either predicted as the difference between two consecutive volume estimates where single-tree volume functions are applied to data from repeated measurements or by a regression model that is applied to data from a single survey and includes radial increment. In national forest inventories (NFIs), the first method is typically used for permanent plots, the second for temporary plots. The Swedish NFI combines estimates from both plot types to assess growth at national and regional scales and it is, therefore, important that the two methods provide similar results. The accuracy of these estimates is affected by random measurement errors in the independent variables, which may lead to systematic errors in predicted variables due to model non-linearity. Using Taylor series expansion and empirical data from the Swedish NFI we compared the expected bias in stem volume growth estimates for different diameter classes of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.). Our results indicate that both methods are fairly insensitive to random measurement errors of the size that occur in the Swedish NFI. The empirical comparison between the two methods showed greater differences for large diameter trees of both pine and spruce. A likely explanation is that the regressions are uncertain because few large trees were available for developing the models. 相似文献

A field experiment was established in two Picea abies (L.) Karst. plantations in southern Sweden to study yield and effects of competition on growth in beeted stands. Beeting was carried out in gaps where originally planted seedlings had been removed. Tree species used for beeting were P. abies, Pinus sylvestris L., Pinus contorta Dougl. and Larix decidua Mill × L. leptolepis Gord. The plantations were beeted when mean heights were 95 cm (Ullasjo) and 40 cm (Knäred). Effects of competition on diameter growth of P. abies were found when originally planted stands were 2.5 and 3.5 m in height. On both sites, diameter growth in stump height was significantly lower for seedlings beeted in small gaps (approx. 20 m2) than for seedlings beeted in the middle of large gaps (approx. 155 m2). This difference was larger at Ullasjo than at Knared. About 50 % of the P. sylvestris 70 % of the P. contorta and 80% of the L. decidua x L. leptolepis were dead or severely damaged six years after beeting. The main causes of damage were fraying and browsing by moose and roe‐deer. 相似文献

Abstract Effects of stump harvesting on the properties of surface soil and on the density, structure and growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands were estimated in a field trial in western Finland. The experiment was established in 1977 and measured in 2010. Stems and logging residues were harvested after clear-cutting, and stumps were lifted and removed from half of the experimental area. Sixteen plots were planted with pine seedlings and 16 with spruce. The main effects of stump harvesting were improved survival of planted trees and an increase in natural regeneration. No clearly negative effects were noted in the stand development. Stump harvesting had no or minimal effects on the properties of the organic layer and those of the 0- to 10-cm mineral-soil layer. Soil properties did not differ between tree species. Pine production was higher on plots with stump removal compared to plots without soil treatment. 相似文献

The effectiveness of a plastic collar designed to protect planted seedlings against damage caused by Hylobius abietis (L.) (Col., Curculionidae) was evaluated at 63 planting sites in southern Sweden during 1979 and 1980. Nearly 10 000 collar‐protected pine and spruce plants and 10 000 controls were carefully examined for Hylobius‐damage and other injuries. In addition, the impact of some microsite factors on weevil damage and collar performance was evaluated, and the height growth was measured. The protective effect of the collar for two seasons after planting was comparable to that of insecticides and was best at sites with sparse vegetation and high weevil pressure. Proper application of the collar was crucial for good control. Collars were not observed to affect plant growth. Soil scarification reduced mortality in both collared plants and controls. 相似文献

Photosynthetic performance and root respiration were measured for seedlings of Scots pine and Norway spruce under constant conditions in an open gas exchange system in the laboratory. Measurements were carried out after root exposure to ‐20, ‐5 and 0°C and subsequent longtime storage in darkness at +1 or +4°C. Stomatal conductance in relation to net photosynthetic rates was also investigated after the same treatment of seedlings. Root respiration was low for seedlings whose root system had been exposed to ‐20°C, Scots pine showing lower rates than Norway spruce. This was probably an indication of root damage. At least for one provenance of Scots pine, respiration rates were higher for seedlings stored at +1 than at +4°C. Photosynthetic performance was also lowest for seedlings whose roots had been exposed to +20°C compared to higher temperatures, the difference being more clear‐cut for Norway spruce than for Scots pine. Storage at +1 gave slightly higher photosynthetic rates than at +4°C. There was a close relation between stomatal conductance measured on individual needles and photosynthetic performance measured on the whole seedling. 相似文献

Forest biomass databases which go beyond stem volume are needed for carbon balance calculations and also for forest monitoring, forest damage inventories and the solution of other related problems. In this article, it is shown how recursive multiple regression analysis can combine forest inventory data with biomass harvest data. The stand‐level conversion factor derived for Pinus sylvestris L. branch biomass for the “Severka”; Forest Farm shows a reasonable goodness of fit, with a coefficient of determination of R2 = 0.87. Statistically significant coefficients were achieved by including stand density and the quadratic mean diameter in the regression. Equations developed for Switzerland, using Burger's Picea abies (L.) Karst. branch and needle conversion factors for individual trees, show R2 = 0.87 and R 2 = 0.91, achieved by taking h dom.50, elevation, diameter at breast height and age into account. 相似文献

Two compounds were isolated from the leaves of Panax ginseng. Their structures were identified as 3beta,6alpha,12beta-triol-22,23,24,25,26,27-hexanordammaran-20-one, and dammar-20(22),24-diene-3beta,6alpha,12beta-triol by spectral and chemical methods. The complete signal assignments of the two compounds were carried out by means of 2D NMR spectral analysis. 相似文献

The relative susceptibility of Melampyrum arvense, M. pratense, M. sylvaticum and M. nemorosum to Cronartium flaccidum was investigated by artificial inoculations. Uredinia and telia were artificially produced on plants from sown seed or transplanted from the wild in the greenhouse. This is the first report in which C. flaccidum telia were artificially produced on leaves of whole plants of M. arvense and M. pratense, the first report of successful artificial disease establishment on M. arvense and the first report of telia production on the upper surface of Melampyrum leaves. As an earlier unreported observation, telia were occasionally formed on both upper and lower leaf surfaces of M. arvense, M. sylvaticum and M. pratense. Host species, spore source and their interaction each affected some aspects of disease development. Melampyrum arvense and M. sylvaticum were the most susceptible hosts, while M. nemorosum was least susceptible. Melampyrum arvense should be considered a potentially important alternate host of C. flaccidum with its limited area of distribution. 相似文献

Between 2013 and 2015, several surveys were conducted throughout forest areas in the north of Iran with the aim of isolating and identifying fungi present on trees showing decline symptoms. Fungal species, isolated from symptomatic wood tissues of various tree genera, including Zelkova, Acer, Parrotia, Quercus, Diospyros, Fagus, Fraxinus, Populus, Pinus, Pterocarya, Gleditsia, Carpinus, Ulmus, Crataegus, Alnus, Mespilus, Punica, Cydonia, Cupressus and Prunus, were morphologically identified and characterized. A molecular identification based on comparisons of DNA sequences of the β‐tubulin gene allowed us to identify seven species belonging to Phaeoacremonium; namely, Phaeoacremonium parasiticum, Pm. alvesii, Pm. minimum, Pm. iranianum, Pm. scolyti, Pm. fraxinopennsylvanicum and Pm. croatiense were isolated and identified. Phaeoacremonium minimum was the most common species and isolated from Gleditsia caspica, Parrotia persica, Cydonia oblonga and Alnus glutinosa. Pathogenicity on selected plants using a mycelium plug inoculation method revealed that most of these species are pathogenic to all the tested trees, with Pm. parasiticum and Pm. minimum being the most pathogenic species. According to host plant species and geographical distribution, the majority of Phaeoacremonium species found represent new records. This is also the first report of Pm. croatiense in Iran and outside Croatia. 相似文献

Heterobasidion parviporum and Heterobasidion annosum are widely distributed root‐rot fungi that infect conifers throughout Europe. Infection of conifer stumps by spores of these pathogens can be controlled by treating fresh stumps with a competing non‐pathogenic fungus, Phlebiopsis gigantea. In this study, growth of three Latvian strains of P. gigantea and the biological control agent ‘Rotstop’ strain was evaluated in stem pieces of Norway spruce, Scots pine, lodgepole pine, Douglas‐fir, Weymouth pine, Siberian larch and Sitka spruce. The growth rates of one H. parviporum and one H. annosum isolate were also measured in the same stem pieces. The growth rate of P. gigantea varied greatly in wood of different conifer species. It was higher in the three pine species, lower in Norway spruce and lowest in Sitka spruce and Siberian larch, and in Douglas‐fir, this fungus did not grow. The largest area of wood occupied by P. gigantea was in lodgepole pine. Growth of Latvian isolates of P. gigantea in the wood of Pinus and Picea species was comparable to that of the Rotstop isolate. Consequently, stump treatment with local P. gigantea isolates should be recommended. However, our results suggest that Douglas‐fir stump treatment against Heterobasidion by P. gigantea may be ineffective and other stump treatment methods should be considered. 相似文献
