A lysimeter method using undisturbed soil columns was used to investigate the effect of water table depth and soil properties on soil organic matter decomposition and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from cultivated peat soils. The study was carried out using cultivated organic soils from two locations in Sweden: Örke, a typical cultivated fen peat with low pH and high organic matter content and Majnegården, a more uncommon fen peat type with high pH and low organic matter content. Even though carbon and nitrogen contents differ greatly between the sites, carbon and nitrogen density are quite similar. A drilling method with minimal soil disturbance was used to collect 12 undisturbed soil monoliths (50 cm high, Ø29.5 cm) per site. They were sown with ryegrass (Lolium perenne) after the original vegetation was removed. The lysimeter design allowed the introduction of water at depth so as to maintain a constant water table at either 40 cm or 80 cm below the soil surface. CO2, CH4 and N2O emissions from the lysimeters were measured weekly and complemented with incubation experiments with small undisturbed soil cores subjected to different tensions (5, 40, 80 and 600 cm water column). CO2 emissions were greater from the treatment with the high water table level (40 cm) compared with the low level (80 cm). N2O emissions peaked in springtime and CH4 emissions were very low or negative. Estimated GHG emissions during one year were between 2.70 and 3.55 kg CO2 equivalents m−2. The results from the incubation experiment were in agreement with emissions results from the lysimeter experiments. We attribute the observed differences in GHG emissions between the soils to the contrasting dry matter liability and soil physical properties. The properties of the different soil layers will determine the effect of water table regulation. Lowering the water table without exposing new layers with easily decomposable material would have a limited effect on emission rates.

Abstract

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions were measured monthly over 1 year in three ecosystems on tropical peatland of Sarawak, Malaysia, using a closed-chamber technique. The three ecosystems investigated were mixed peat swamp forest, sago (Metroxylon sagu) and oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) plantations. The highest annual N2O emissions were observed in the sago ecosystem with a production rate of 3.3 kg N ha?1 year?1, followed by the oil palm ecosystem at 1.2 kg N ha?1 year?1 and the forest ecosystem at 0.7 kg N ha?1 year?1. The N2O emissions ranged from –3.4 to 19.7 µg N m?2 h?1 for the forest ecosystem, from 1.0 to 176.3 µg N m?2 h?1 for the sago ecosystem and from 0.9 to 58.4 µg N m?2 h?1 for the oil palm ecosystem. Multiple regression analysis showed that N2O production in each ecosystem was regulated by different variables. The key factors influencing N2O emissions in the forest ecosystem were the water table and the NH+ 4 concentration at 25–50 cm, soil temperature at 5 cm and nitrate concentration at 0–25 cm in the sago ecosystem, and water-filled pore space, soil temperature at 5 cm and NH+ 4 concentrations at 0–25 cm in the oil palm ecosystem. R2 values for the above regression equations were 0.57, 0.63 and 0.48 for forest, sago and oil palm, respectively. The results suggest that the conversion of tropical peat swamp forest to agricultural crops, which causes substantial changes to the environment and soil properties, will significantly affect the exchange of N2O between the tropical peatland and the atmosphere. Thus, the estimation of net N2O production from tropical peatland for the global N2O budget should take into consideration ecosystem type.

Abstract

Methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from an irrigated rice field under continuous flooding and intermittent irrigation water management practices in northern China were measured in situ by the static chamber technique during May to October in 2000. The intermittent irrigation reduced total growing‐season CH4 emission by 24.22% but increased N2O emission by 23.72%, when compared with the continuous flooding. Soil Eh and four related bacterial groups were also measured to clarify their effects on gaseous emissions. Three ranges of soil redox potential were related to gas emissions: below ?100 mV with vigorous CH4 emission, above +100 mV with significant N2O emission, and +100 to ?100 mV with little CH4 and N2O emissions. Intermittently draining the field increased soil oxidation, with a decrease in CH4 emission and an increase in N2O emission. In general the mid‐season drainage slightly increased the populations of methanotrophs, nitrifiers, and denitrifiers but decreased that of methanogens.

Abstract

We studied the effect of crop residues with various C:N ratios on N2O emissions from soil. We set up five experimental plots with four types of crop residues, onion leaf (OL), soybean stem and leaf (SSL), rice straw (RS) and wheat straw (WS), and no residue (NR) on Gray Lowland soil in Mikasa, Hokkaido, Japan. The C:N ratios of these crop residues were 11.6, 14.5, 62.3, and 110, respectively. Based on the results of a questionnaire survey of farmer practices, we determined appropriate application rates: 108, 168, 110, 141 and 0 g C m?2 and 9.3, 11.6, 1.76, 1.28 and 0 g N m?2, respectively. We measured N2O, CO2 and NO fluxes using a closed chamber method. At the same time, we measured soil temperature at a depth of 5 cm, water-filled pore space (WFPS), and the concentrations of soil NH+ 4-N, NO? 3-N and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC). Significant peaks of N2O and CO2 emissions came from OL and SSL just after application, but there were no emissions from RS, WS or NR. There was a significant relationship between N2O and CO2 emissions in each treatment except WS, and correlations between CO2 flux and temperature in RS, soil NH+ 4-N and N2O flux in SSL and NR, soil NH+ 4-N and CO2 flux in SSL, and WSOC and CO2 flux in WS. The ratio of N2O-N/NO-N increased to approximately 100 in OL and SSL as N2O emissions increased. Cumulative N2O and CO2 emissions increased as the C:N ratio decreased, but not significantly. The ratio of N2O emission to applied N ranged from ?0.43% to 0.86%, and was significantly correlated with C:N ratio (y = ?0.59 ln [x] + 2.30, r 2 = 0.99, P < 0.01). The ratio of CO2 emissions to applied C ranged from ?5.8% to 45% and was also correlated with C:N ratio, but not significantly (r 2 = 0.78, P = 0.11).

Biochar produced from plant biomass through pyrolysis has been shown to be much more resistant to biodegradation in the soil as compared with the raw biomass, such as cereal straw that is routinely shredded and discharged on to farm fields in large amounts. Biochar application to soil has also been reported to decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, although the mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, the emissions of three main GHGs (CO2, CH4, and N2O) and enzyme activities (urease, β-glycosidase, and dehydrogenase) were measured during a 100-day laboratory incubation of a Chernozemic soil amended with either straw or its biochar at rates of 0.67 and 1.68 % (based on the amount of C added) for the low and high rates, respectively. The biochar application dramatically reduced N2O emissions, but CO2 or CH4 emissions were not different, as compared with the un-amended soil. At the same C equivalent application rate, CO2 and N2O emission rates were greater while CH4 emission rates were lower in straw than in biochar application treatments. The activities of both the dehydrogenase and β-glycosidase significantly declined while that of urease significantly increased with the biochar as compared with the straw treatment. We conclude that pyrolysis of cereal straw prior to land application would significantly reduce CO2 and N2O emissions, in association with changed enzyme activities, while increasing the soil C pool through the addition of stable C in the form of biochar.

The effects of elevated CO2 supply on N2O and CH4 fluxes and biomass production of Phleum pratense were studied in a greenhouse experiment. Three sets of 12 farmed peat soil mesocosms (10 cm dia, 47 cm long) sown with P. pratense and equally distributed in four thermo-controlled greenhouses were fertilised with a commercial fertiliser in order to add 2, 6 or 10 g N m−2. In two of the greenhouses, CO2 concentration was kept at atmospheric concentration (360 μmol mol−1) and in the other two at doubled concentration (720 μmol mol−1). Soil temperature was kept at 15 °C and air temperature at 20 °C. Natural lighting was supported by artificial light and deionized water was used to regulate soil moisture. Forage was harvested and the plants fertilised three times during the basic experiment, followed by an extra fertilisations and harvests. At the end of the experiment CH4 production and CH4 oxidation potentials were determined; roots were collected and the biomass was determined. From the three first harvests the amount of total N in the aboveground biomass was determined. N2O and CH4 exchange was monitored using a closed chamber technique and a gas chromatograph. The highest N2O fluxes (on average, 255 μg N2O m−2 h−1 during period IV) occurred just after fertilisation at high water contents, and especially at the beginning of the growing season (on average, 490 μg N2O m−2 h−1 during period I) when the competition of vegetation for N was low. CH4 fluxes were negligible throughout the experiment, and for all treatments the production and oxidation potentials of CH4 were inconsequential. Especially at the highest rates of fertilisation, the elevated supply of CO2 increased above- and below-ground biomass production, but both at the highest and lowest rates of fertilisation, decreased the total amount of N in the aboveground dry biomass. N2O fluxes tended to be higher under doubled CO2 concentrations, indicating that increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration may affect N and C dynamics in farmed peat soil.

Abstract

The effects of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) deposition on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions under low (10 cm below soil surface) and high (at soil surface) water tables were investigated in the laboratory. Undisturbed soil columns from the alpine peatland of the Tibetan Plateau were analyzed. CH4 emission was higher and N2O emission was lower at the high water table than those at the low water table regardless of nutrient application. Addition of N (NH4NO3 (ammonium nitrate), 5 g N m?2) decreased CH4 emission up to 57% and 50% at low and high water tables, respectively, but correspondingly increased N2O emission by 2.5 and 10.4 times. Addition of S (Na2SO4 (sodium sulfate), 2.5 g S m?2) decreased CH4 and N2O emission by 64% and 79% at the low water table, respectively, but had a slightly positive effect at the high water table. These results indicated that the responses of CH4 and N2O emissions to the S deposition depend on the water table condition in the high-altitude peatland.

GHGs production and emission may vary depending on soil physical properties, water management and fertilization. Two paddy soils characterized by different texture were incubated to evaluate the impact of flooding (permanent or intermittent) and N addition on potential N2O, CH4 and CO2 production and release into atmosphere and soil solution. Relationships with volumetric water content (VWC) and water filled pore space (WFPS) were evaluated. Overall, the finer clayey soil (CL) produced 58% more CH4 than the coarser sandy soil (SA) and showed an earlier sink to source transition; the difference was lower with N addition. Permanent flooding favoured the amount of dissolved CH4. SA produced more N2O emissions than CL under permanent flooding (31.0 vs. 3.7%); an opposite pattern was observed for dissolved N2O (16.4 vs. 52.7%). Fertilization increased N2O emissions under dry conditions in CL and under flooding in SA.

Our findings showed that i) VWC had a larger influence on N2O and CH4 emissions than WFPS, ii) soil type influenced the gas release into atmosphere or soil solution and the timing of sink to source transition in CH4 emissions. Further investigation on timing of fertilization and drainage are needed to improve climate change mitigation strategies.

Abstract

Both nitrogen (N) deposition and biochar can affect the emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and ammonia (NH3) from different soils. Here, we have established a simulated wet N deposition experiment to investigate the effects of N deposition and biochar addition on N2O and CO2 emissions and NH3 volatilization from agricultural and forest soils. Repacked soil columns were subjected to six N deposition events over a 1-year period. N was applied at rates of 0 (N0), 60 (N60), and 120 (N120) kg Nh a?1 yr?1 without or with biochar (0 and 30 t ha?1 yr?1). For agricultural soil, adding N increased cumulative N2O emissions by 29.8% and 99.1% (< 0.05) from the N60 and N120 treatments, respectively as compared to without N treatments, and N120 emitted 53.4% more (< 0.05) N2O than the N60 treatment; NH3 volatilization increased by 33.6% and 91.9% (< 0.05) from the N60 and N120 treatments, respectively, as compared to without N treatments, and N120 emitted 43.6% more (< 0.05) NH3 than N60; cumulative CO2 emissions were not influenced by N addition. For forest soil, adding N significantly increased cumulative N2O emissions by 141.2% (< 0.05) and 323.0% (< 0.05) from N60 and N120 treatments, respectively, as compared to without N treatments, and N120 emitted 75.4% more (< 0.05) N2O than N60; NH3 volatilization increased by 39.0% (< 0.05) and 56.1% (< 0.05) from the N60 and N120 treatments, respectively, as compared to without N treatments, and there was no obvious difference between N120 and N60 treatments; cumulative CO2 emissions were not influenced by N addition. Biochar amendment significantly (< 0.05) decreased cumulative N2O emissions by 20.2% and 25.5% from agricultural and forest soils, respectively, and increased CO2 emissions slightly by 7.2% and NH3 volatilization obviously by 21.0% in the agricultural soil, while significantly decreasing CO2 emissions by 31.5% and NH3 volatilization by 22.5% in the forest soil. These results suggest that N deposition would strengthen N2O and NH3 emissions and have no effect on CO2 emissions in both soils, and treatments receiving the higher N rate at N120 emitted obviously more N2O and NH3 than the lower rate at N60. Under the simulated N deposition circumstances, biochar incorporation suppressed N2O emissions in both soils, and produced contrasting effects on CO2 and NH3 emissions, being enhanced in the agricultural soil while suppressed in the forest soil.

ABSTRACT

Legumes, including hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth), are widely used as green manures. They fix nitrogen (N) and provide the N to other crops when they decompose, and thus are considered alternatives for chemical N fertilizers. However, N-rich plant residues, including hairy vetch, are also sources of soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, a greenhouse gas. On one hand, rice (Oryza sativa L. ssp. japonica) husk biochar is widely used as a soil conditioner in Japan and has been reported as a tool to mitigate soil N2O emissions. We conducted a soil core incubation experiment (1.5 months) to compare the N2O emissions during the decomposition of surface-applied hairy vetch (0.8 kg dried hairy vetch m?2 soil) under semi-saturated soil moisture conditions (~100% water-filled pore space (WFPS)), using two soil types, namely Andosol and Fluvisol. Throughout the incubation period, the use of biochar suppressed soil NH4+-N concentrations in Andosol, whereas the effect of biochar on NH4+-N was not clear in Fluvisol. Biochar increased the nitrate (NO3?-N) levels both in Andosol and Fluvisol, suggesting a negative influence on denitrification and/or a positive influence on nitrification. Biochar application did not influence the cumulative N2O emissions. Our study suggests that rice husk biochar is not a good option to mitigate N2O emissions during the decomposition of surface-applied hairy vetch, although this study was performed under laboratory conditions without plants. However, the trends of the inorganic-N concentration changes followed by the addition of hairy vetch and biochar were markedly different between the two soil types. Thus, factors behind the differences need to be further studied.

Two Finnish agricultural soils (peat soil and loamy sand) were exposed to four freeze-thaw cycles (FTC), with a temperature change from −17.3±0.4 °C to +4.1±0.4 °C. Control cores from both soils were kept at constant temperature (+6.6±2.0 °C) without FTCs. Soil N2O and CO2 emissions were monitored during soil thawing, and the effects of FTCs on soil microbes were studied. N2O emissions were extremely low in peat soil, possibly due to low soil water content. Loamy sand had high N2O emission, with the highest emission after the second FTC. Soil freeze-thaw increased anaerobic respiration in both soil types during the first 3-4 FTCs, and this increase was higher in the peat soil. The microbial community structure and biomass analysed with lipid biomarkers (phospholipid fatty acids, 3- and 2- hydroxy fatty acids) were not affected by freezing-thawing cycles, nor was soil microbial biomass carbon (MIB-C). Molecular analysis of the microbial community structure with temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE) also showed no changes due the FTCs. These results show that freezing and thawing of boreal soils does not have a strong effect on microbial biomass or community structure.

A field experiment was conducted to study the effects of combination of straw incorporation and water management on fluxes of CH4, N2O and soil heterotrophic respiration (Rh) in a paddy field in subtropical central China by using a static opaque chamber/gas chromatography method. Four treatments were set up: two rice straw incorporation rates at 0 (S1) and 6 (S2) t ha?1 combined with two water managements of intermittent irrigation (W1, with mid-season drainage) and continuous flooding (W2, without mid-season drainage). The cumulative seasonal CH4 emissions for the treatments of S1W2, S2W1 and S2W2 increased significantly by 1.84, 5.47 and 6.63 times, respectively, while seasonal N2O emissions decreased by 0.67, 0.29 and 1.21 times, respectively, as compared to S1W1 treatment. The significant increase in the cumulative Rh for the treatments S1W1, S2W1 and S2W2 were 0.54, 1.35 and 0.52 times, respectively, in comparison with S1W2. On a seasonal basis, both the CO2-equivalents (CO2e) and yield-scaled CO2e (GHGI) of CH4 and N2O emissions increased with straw incorporation and continuous flooding, following the order: S2W2>S2W1>S1W2>S1W1. Thus, the practices of in season straw incorporation should be discouraged, while mid-season drainage is recommended in paddy rice production from a point view of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The annual carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) dynamics were measured with static chambers on two organic agricultural soils with different soil characteristics. Site 1 had a peat layer of 30 cm, with an organic matter (OM) content of 74% in the top 20 cm. Site 2 had a peat layer of 70 cm but an OM content of only 40% in the top 20 cm. On both sites there were plots under barley and grass and also plots where the vegetation was removed. All soils were net sources of CO2 and N2O, but they consumed atmospheric CH4. Soils under barley had higher net CO2 emissions (830 g CO2-C m−2 yr−1) and N2O emissions (848 mg N2O-N m−2 yr−1) than those under grass (395 g CO2-C m−3 yr−1 and 275 mg N2O-N m−2 yr−1). Bare soils had the highest N2O emissions, mean 2350 mg N2O-N m−2 yr−1. The mean CH4 uptake rate from vegetated soils was 100 mg CH4-C m−3 yr−1 and from bare soils 55 mg CH4-C m−2 yr−1. The net CO2 emissions were higher from Site 2, which had a high peat bulk density and a low OM content derived from the addition of mineral soil to the peat during the cultivation history of that site. Despite the differences in soil characteristics, the mean N2O emissions were similar from vegetated peat soils from both sites. However, bare soils from Site 2 with mineral soil addition had N2O emissions of 2-9 times greater than those from Site 1. Site 1 consumed atmospheric CH4 at a higher rate than Site 2 with additional mineral soil. N2O emissions during winter were an important component of the N2O budget even though they varied greatly, ranging from 2 to 99% (mean 26%) of the annual emission.

We studied in laboratory microcosms (intact soil cores) N2O and CO2 emissions from four different agricultural soil types (organic soil, clay, silt and loam) at low temperatures with or without freezing-thawing events. When the temperature of the frozen soil cores was increased stepwise from −8 °C the N2O emissions began to increase at −0.5 °C, and peaked at −0.1 °C in the organic, clay and silt soils, and at +1.6 °C in the loam soils. However, a stepwise decrease in soil temperature from +15 °C also induced an increase in the N2O emissions close to the 0 °C. These emissions peaked between −0.4 and +2.5 °C depending on the soil type and water content. However, the emission maxima were from 2 to 14.3% of those encountered in the experiments where frozen soils were thawed. Our results show that in addition to the well-documented thawing peak, soils also can have a maximum in their N2O emission near 0 °C when soil temperature decrease. These emissions, however, are less than those emitted from thawing soils. The correlations between the N2O and CO2 emissions were weak. Our results suggest that N2O is produced in soils down to a temperature of −6 °C.

ABSTRACT

Biochar can reduce N2O emissions and it can be added to the soil once, whereas fertilizers are often applied every cultivation season. The aging of biochar in soil affects its functioning but it is unclear whether palm shell biochar (PSB) could still mitigate N2O emissions even when additional basal N fertilizers are applied 1 year after the initial biochar application. We studied the impact of fresh and aged PSB (0%, 6%, 12%, and 18% w/w of dry soil) on N2O emissions, soil properties, nutrient content and yield of Komatsuna (Brassica rapa var. perviridis) under sandy soil conditions. The aged PSB non-significantly reduced N2O emissions but significantly offset soil acidification, and maintained a high soil nutrient status. Biochar application with fertilizer significantly increased plant tissue K and Ca content but decreased N, P and Mg content compared to the treatments without biochar. At higher application rates, biochar had negative effects on crop yield but as it aged, the negative effects were offset as a result of the similar variation in plant N uptake. Since seasonal N fertilizer application seems to be inevitable in Komatsuna cultivation, addition of biochar could be a possible way of counteracting the effects of excessive fertilizer use. Further research is needed to assess the feasible biochar application rates for Komatsuna fields in various soil types under field conditions.

Abstract

Forest fires can change the greenhouse gase (GHG) flux of borea forest soils. We measured carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes with different burn histories in black spruce (Picea mariana) stands in interior Alaska. The control forest (CF) burned in 1920; partially burned (PB) in 1999; and severely burned (SB1 and SB2) in 2004. The thickness of the organic layer was 22 ± 6 cm at CF, 28 ± 10 cm at PB, 12 ± 6 cm at SB1 and 4 ± 2 cm at SB2. The mean soil temperature during CO2 flux measurement was 8.9 ± 3.1, 6.4 ± 2.1, 5.9 ± 3.4 and 5.0 ± 2.4°C at SB2, SB1, PB and CF, respectively, and differed significantly among the sites (P < 0.01). The mean CO2 flux was highest at PB (128 ± 85 mg CO2-C m?2 h?1) and lowest at SB1 (47 ± 19 mg CO2-C m?2 h?1) (P < 0.01), and within each site it was positively correlated with soil temperature (P < 0.01). The CO2 flux at SB2 was lower than that at CF when the soil temperature was high. We attributed the low CO2 flux at SB1 and SB2 to low root respiration and organic matter decomposition rates due to the 2004 fire. The CH4 uptake rate was highest at SB1 [–91 ± 21 μg CH4-C m?2 h?1] (P < 0.01) and positively correlated with soil temperature (P < 0.01) but not soil moisture. The CH4 uptake rate increased with increasing soil temperature because methanotroph activity increased. The N2O flux was highest [3.6 ± 4.7 μg N2O-N m?2 h?1] at PB (P < 0.01). Our findings suggest that the soil temperature and moisture are important factors of GHG dynamics in forest soils with different fire history.

Our previous research showed large amounts of nitrous oxide (N2O) emission (>200?kg?N?ha?1?year?1) from agricultural peat soil. In this study, we investigated the factors influencing relatively large N2O fluxes and the source of nitrogen (N) substrate for N2O in a tropical peatland in central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Using a static chamber method, N2O and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes were measured in three conventionally cultivated croplands (conventional), an unplanted and unfertilized bare treatment (bare) in each cropland, and unfertilized grassland over a three-year period. Based on the difference in N2O emission from two treatments, contribution of the N source for N2O was calculated. Nitrous oxide concentrations at five depths (5–80?cm) were also measured for calculating net N2O production in soil. Annual N fertilizer application rates in the croplands ranged from 472 to 1607?kg?N?ha?1?year?1. There were no significant differences in between N2O fluxes in the two treatments at each site. Annual N2O emission in conventional and bare treatments varied from 10.9 to 698 and 6.55 to 858?kg?N?ha?1?year?1, respectively. However, there was also no significant difference between annual N2O emissions in the two treatments at each site. This suggests most of the emitted N2O was derived from the decomposition of peat. There were significant positive correlations between N2O and CO2 fluxes in bare treatment in two croplands where N2O flux was higher than at another cropland. Nitrous oxide concentration distribution in soil measured in the conventional treatment showed that N2O was mainly produced in the surface soil down to 15?cm in the soil. The logarithmic value of the ratio of N2O flux and nitrate concentration was positively correlated with water filled pore space (WEPS). These results suggest that large N2O emission in agricultural tropical peatland was caused by denitrification with high decomposition of peat. In addition, N2O was mainly produced by denitrification at high range of WFPS in surface soil.

We examined the effects of forest clearfelling on the fluxes of soil CO2, CH4, and N2O in a Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) plantation on an organic-rich peaty gley soil, in Northern England. Soil CO2, CH4, N2O as well as environmental factors such as soil temperature, soil water content, and depth to the water table were recorded in two mature stands for one growing season, at the end of which one of the two stands was felled and one was left as control. Monitoring of the same parameters continued thereafter for a second growing season. For the first 10 months after clearfelling, there was a significant decrease in soil CO2 efflux, with an average efflux rate of 4.0 g m−2 d−1 in the mature stand (40-year) and 2.7 g m−2 d−1 in clearfelled site (CF). Clearfelling turned the soil from a sink (−0.37 mg m−2 d−1) for CH4 to a net source (2.01 mg m−2 d−1). For the same period, soil N2O fluxes averaged 0.57 mg m−2 d−1 in the CF and 0.23 mg m−2 d−1 in the 40-year stand. Clearfelling affected environmental factors and lead to higher daily soil temperatures during the summer period, while it caused an increase in the soil water content and a rise in the water table depth. Despite clearfelling, CO2 remained the dominant greenhouse gas in terms of its greenhouse warming potential.
