BACKGROUND: Cycloate inhibits the biosynthesis of very‐long‐chain fatty acids, the essential constituents of plant waxes and suberin. Fatty acids also serve as precursors of aliphatic carbon chains in resorcinolic lipids, which play a fundamental role in the plant defence system against fungal pathogens. In this study, the effect of cycloate on the biosynthesis of 5‐n‐alkylresorcinols in rye seedlings (Secale cereale L.) grown under various light and thermal conditions was examined. RESULTS: The content of alkylresorcinols biosynthesised in rye was generally increased by the herbicide in both green and etiolated plants. The presence of cycloate also affected patterns of alkylresorcinol homologues in plants grown at 15 and 22 °C; very‐long‐side‐chain compounds were less abundant, whereas both short‐chain saturated and unsaturated homologues were generally accumulated. No cycloate‐related effects caused by homologue pattern modifications were observed at elevated temperature. CONCLUSION: This study extends present understanding of the mode of action of thiocarbamate herbicides. Cycloate markedly affected the biosynthesis of very‐long‐side‐chain resorcinolic lipids in rye seedlings, confirming the existence of parallels in both fatty acid and alkylresorcinol biosynthetic pathways. The observed cycloate‐driven accumulation of 5‐n‐alkylresorcinols may improve the resistance of cereals to infections caused by microbial pathogens. The toxicities of five systemic fungicides [benomyl, carbendazim, methyl 4-(2- aminophenyl)-3-thioallophanate (NF48), thiabendazole and thiophanate-methyl] and of two non-systemic fungicides (guazatine and phenylmercury acetate) against Fusarium culmorum were compared on agar plates; their performance as seed treatments was measured by inoculating the shoot bases of wheat seedlings with F. culmorum in pot experiments. The two most effective compounds, benomyl and thiabendazole, and the less effective thiophanate-methyl, were evaluated in further seed treatment experiments in which leaf sheaths and roots of slightly older plants were infected. The three fungicides protected the first leaf sheath for more than 5 weeks, but thiophanate-methyl was least effective. Against root disease, they were effective when infection was mild, but only thiabendazole significantly controlled severe infection. Bioautography confirmed that fungicide levels in shoots were greater after benomyl and thiabendazole, than after carbendazim and thiophanate-methyl treatments, and that concentrations of fungicide after benomyl, carbendazim and thiophanate-methyl treatments generally declined between 5-13 weeks after treatment. Thiabendazole produced a second fungitoxic component detectable in plants after 34 days.  相似文献

Efficacy of certain fungicides and non-conventional chemicals against Aspergillus spp. contamination and subsequent aflatoxin production in rice was investigated. Among the 10 fungicides tested, carbendazim, contaf plus, folicur, propiconazole and saaf completely inhibited the growth of all Aspergillus spp. and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) production at 1 g or ml/kg concentration. Of the five non-conventional chemicals tested, benzoic acid effectively inhibited the mycelial growth of Aspergillus flavus (72%) at 4 g/kg, completely inhibited the Aspergillus parasiticus and Aspergillus niger even at 1 g/kg and Aspergillus ochraceus at 4 g/kg concentration. Vanillin completely reduced the AFB1 production at 4 g/kg of seed followed by sodium chloride with out inhibiting the mycelial growth. This study reveals that fungicides and non-conventional chemicals had effectively inhibited the mycelial growth of Aspergillus spp. and AFB1 production in rice.  相似文献

Greenhouse experiments were conducted in order to determine the impact of seed-borne Microdochium nivale var. nivale and var. majus inoculum, and seed treatment with a carboxin+thiram mixture, on the development of seedling blight, and on subsequent stem colonisation and growth of winter wheat (cv. Cadenza). Experiments were conducted at temperatures favourable (3°C) and unfavourable (22°C) to M. nivale. Seed-borne inoculum resulted in seedling blight symptom development when plants were grown at 3°C, but not when plants were grown at 22°C. For seedlings grown at 3°C, plants arising from heavily blighted seedlings developed more severe symptoms of stem colonisation, when compared with those arising from seedlings from carboxin+thiram treated seeds. In addition, the vigour of such plants (assessed by determining the number of tillers and ears per plant, stem length, green leaf area, dry weight and yield) was also significantly lower than for plants arising from carboxin+thiram treated seeds. Microdochium nivale var. majus and var. nivale appeared to have little effect on plant vigour from seedlings grown at 22°C. This is the first recorded incidence of seedling blight affecting subsequent plant growth. Microdochium nivale var. majus and var. nivale stem colonisation increased from growth stage (GS) 40–49 to harvest in plants raised from seedlings grown at both temperatures. Microdochium nivale var. majus and var. nivale were isolated from the second node at GS 40–49 and the third node at harvest of plants from seedlings grown at 3°C. For plants from seedlings raised at 22°C, M. nivale var. majus and var. nivale were isolated from the first node at GS 40–49 and the second node at harvest. Carboxin+thiram seed treatment decreased the extent and severity of stem colonisation on plants from seedlings grown at 22°C.  相似文献

The effects of benomyl [methyl 1 (butylcarbamoyl)-benzimidazol-2-ylcarbamate] and carbendazim (methyl benzimidazol-2-ylcarbamate) on mitosis in hyphae of Botrytis cinerea and root tips of onion (Allium cepa) were studied. The effect of the fungicides on root tips was compared with the effect produced by griseofulvin.Benomyl or carbendazim had a rapid effect on dividing hyphal nuclei. The effects of the fungicides were apparent after 5 min, and the normal stages of division were not seen clearly in any of the treated material. Chromosomes became visible at prophase-metaphase, but they did not separate completely. At the end of division, the chromatin became stretched into long threads, daughter nuclei did not separate completely, and chromatin was often present as irregular shaped masses.Benomyl and carbendazim induced abnormalities in cell division in about 3% of onion root tip cells. After treatment for 6 h, formation of the cell plate was inhibited and cells were seen with two nuclei; other aberrations produced were lagging chromosomes and anaphase bridges. After 3 days chromosomes sometimes occurred as amorphous clumps, and nuclei were found with more than two nucleoli. Griseofulvin produced similar effects in onion root tip cells, but the chromosome bridges persisted through to telophase. The results show that benomyl and carbendazim can interfere with mitosis in cells in green plants as well as in hyphae of fungi.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to determine the 96 h-LC50 of benomyl to the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus and to investigate the biochemical or hematological indices of blood and the alterations in the antioxidant enzymes of this fish in response to sublethal concentrations of benomyl. Fish weighing 71.61 ± 12.05 g were used in this study; they were subjected to fasting for 4 weeks before treatment. An aqueous solution of benomyl (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 mg L−1) was administered for 96 h to determine the LC50. The 96 h-LC50 value of benomyl was 4.39 (3.23-5.60) mg L−1 in the present study. For 5 weeks, the aqueous solution of benomyl (0, 100, 200, and 400 μg L−1) was administered to investigate its effect on the hematological parameters and antioxidant enzymes. The predominant hematological findings in fish exposed to benomyl were as follows: no significant change in the Hb (g dL−1) level, MCV (μm3), MCH (pg) and MCHC (%) as compared to the control. Benomyl exposure led to greater increases in the GPT, GOT (Karmen-unit), LDH (Wroblewski unit), total cholesterol, Fe, and Ca (mg dL−1) values, whereas the levels of ALP (KA unit), total protein, triglyceride, albumin, and Mg (mg dL−1) did not increase. Benomyl increased the in vivo HSI (%), GST (nmol min−1 mg protein−1), and SOD (U mg protein−1) values in the fish livers in the test group, unlike those in the control group for 5 weeks. At concentrations higher than 100 μg L−1, benomyl affected the GST and SOD levels of Nile tilapia in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The present findings suggest that the in vivo hepatotoxicity associated with benomyl may, in part, result from the hematological index, and antioxidants may provide limited protection against benomyl toxicity.  相似文献

An in vivo technique was developed to observe colonisation of mushroom compost by Trichoderma spp. Isolates of T. harzianum (Th2), T. harzianum (Th1), T. koningii (Tk) and T. viride (Tv) were artificially introduced into compost using a mini-bag system. Wheat grains, colonised by Trichoderma spp, were placed centrally on a layer of compost at the bottom of 1-litre polythene bags which were then filled with 350 g of spawned or un-spawned compost, and partially sealed. After 14 and 21 days incubation at 27 degrees C, the bags were assessed for recovery of Trichoderma from middle and top zones using a needle stab re-isolation technique and a visual colonisation scoring system. Visible green mould contamination, similar to that observed in practice, developed within 21 days. The visual colonisation scoring was reliably related to the re-isolation success. In this evaluation, Trichoderma spp showed considerable differences in their relative abilities to colonise spawned and un-spawned compost, with Th2 isolates being consistently superior to the other isolates of Th1, Tk and Tv in colonising spawned compost. This technique was employed to evaluate the effects of fungicides on the colonisation of mushroom compost by three Trichoderma spp: Th2, Th1 and Tk, using 1-litre and 5-litre mini-bag systems. Aqueous suspensions of benomyl, carbendazim, thiabendazole, prochloraz and prochloraz+carbendazim incorporated into the compost at 50 mg litre(-1), or applied to spawn at 50 mg kg(-1), reduced the colonisation by Trichoderma spp. Prochloraz and prochloraz+carbendazim were superior to benomyl, carbendazim or thiabendazole in reducing compost colonisation by Th2, Th1 and Tk, with Th2 being the most persistent type, capable of colonising treated compost in the presence of all five fungicides. The prochloraz+carbendazim mixture, not normally used in mushroom production, was equal to or better than prochloraz alone. The incidence of green mould colonisation by Th2 was as extensive in the 5-litre compost bags as in the 1-litre bags, but colonisation by Th1 and Tk was more apparent in the 5-litre bags. The in vivo mini-bag evaluations using wheat grain Trichoderma inoculum and needle stab re-isolation procedures proved an efficient method for studying colonisation and screening for effectiveness of fungicides applied to mushroom compost or spawn.  相似文献

The biological effects of two important medicinal plants, Artemisia annua L. and Achillea millefolium (L.) (viz, mortality, growth, and feeding indices as well as enzyme and non-enzymatic activities) were studied on small white Pieris rapae L a deleterious pest of cruciferous plants under controlled conditions (16:8 h L:D at 25 ± 1 °C and 65 ± 5% RH). The LC50 and LC25 values were 9.387% and 3.645% for A. annua L. and 4.19% and 1.69% for A. millefolium (L.), respectively. At the lowest concentration (0.625%), the deterrency was 29.826% and 44.185% for A. annua L. and A. millefolium (L.), respectively. Feeding indices were variously affected with changes in a number of parameters and an increase in larval and pupal duration. The activity level of alkaline phosphatase increased sharply while alanin and aspartate aminotransferases showed a sharp decrease. For non-enzymatic compounds, the amount of glucose and uric acid increased, but total protein and cholesterol decreased. These results indicate that these two medicinal plants might possess potential secondary metabolites that may be useful for controlling potential insect pests.  相似文献

Melon plants grown in a liquid nutrient solution were separately treated either with benomyl, 2-aminobenzimidazole (2-AB), or benzimidazole (BZ), and after 60 days each compound had decomposed into significant concentrations of metabolites, those from 2-AB and BZ corresponding to the metabolites from benomyl. This supported the following postulated metabolic pathway for benomyl in melon plants: benomyl → carbendazim → 2-AB→BZ Involvement of the other identified metabolites of benomyl (2-aminobenzonitrile, o-phenylenediamine, aniline, and the conjugates of carbendazim and 2-AB) cannot be proposed unequivocally. In the extracts from plants treated with 2-AB or BZ, new and unidentified metabolites have also been observed using gas-liquid chromatography (g.l.c.).  相似文献

Foliar pathogens attack alfalfa wherever the crop is grown, but their impact, especially on seed production, is poorly understood. In greenhouse trials, leaf spot injury caused by inoculation with various pathogens reduced the crude protein content of infected alfalfa leaves by 22% compared with a healthy control. There was a negative relationship between disease injury and the photosynthetic efficiency of alfalfa plants, as determined by measuring chlorophyll fluorescence in leaves from inoculated vs. non-inoculated seedlings. In field trials at two sites in Alberta from 2001 to 2003, inoculation with Phoma medicaginis increased disease incidence in four of six trials, Phoma sclerotioides increased incidence in four of five trials, and Leptosphaerulina trifolii and Stemphylium botryosum increased incidence in two of six trials. There was a trend for inoculation treatments to reduce seed yield, despite high levels of background infection by indigenous pathogens. The fungicides benomyl and propiconazole inhibited radial growth of Phoma spp. in vitro and reduced disease incidence in inoculated greenhouse experiments. In field trials, applications of benomyl and propiconazole reduced disease incidence, but did not always increase seed yield.  相似文献

Mixtures of the plant growth regulators (PGRs) gibberellins A4 and A7 (GA 4/7) and ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid), applied as soak treatments at 20° C for 24 h, were toxic to pycnidiospores of Septoria apiicola on agar, apparently as a result of low pH of their solutions. Ultraviolet spectroscopy showed that the aqueous solubility of the fungicides benomyl and carbendazim increased significantly when buffered at low pH or mixed with aqueous solutions of GA 4/7 and ethephon. This resulted in greater quantities of 14C-labelled fungicides entering celery seeds imbibed in PGR/fungicide mixtures in comparison with fungicides alone.
A 24-h seed soak at 20° C in a mixture of aqueous benomyl, GA 4/7 and ethephon eliminated S. apiicola in infected celery seeds. A thiram soak was also effective but PGR mixtures alone did not completely eliminate the pathogen.  相似文献

A comparison has been made of the effects of some protective and systemic fungicides, and an eradicant fungicide, on the growth, metabolic activity and nitrogen-fixing capacity of Rhizobium trifolii. Effects on the bacterium grown in vitro with a combined nitrogen source were not necessarily reflected in the nitrogen-fixing capacity of excised nodulated roots of white clover. Symbiotic nitrogen fixation was affected by thiram, oxycarboxin and “Ethylan CP”, but was unchanged by benomyl, captan, carbendazim, carboxin, dodine, dimethirimol, ethirimol, tridemorph, triforine or thiophanate-methyl. None of the fungicides tested altered the leghaemoglobin content of the root nodules.  相似文献

Seeds of perennial ryegrass Lolium perenne treated with four fungicides, benomyl, captan, iprodione and metalaxyl, used singly and in all combinations were sown in soil in pots. The soil was maintained at a low moisture content to predispose the seedlings to pre-emergence infection by soil-borne fungi. Thirteen of the fifteen fungicide treatments significantly increased seedling emergence and all but one contained benomyl and/or captan. In another pot experiment, a combination of benomyl and captan was tested against four similar treatments, carbendazim+captan, thiabendazole+captan, thiabendazole+metalaxyl and thiabendazole+thiram and also drazoxolon. Only benomyl+captan and drazoxolon did not increase seedling emergence significantly. A natural infection of the seedlings by powdery mildew Erysiphe graminis was reduced significantly by all treatments except thiabendazole+thiram and drazoxolon. Only car-bendazim+captan significantly increased the dry weight of seedlings per pot 98 days after sowing. Benomyl+captan seed treatment significantly increased seedling emergence in 9 of 16 soils collected from widespread sites. One perennial ryegrass cultivar, Parcour, was used in the above experiments and in a comparison with 12 other diploid cultivars its response to benomyl seed treatment was about mid-range.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to assess the plant growth promoting activities of Mesorhizobium sp. in the presence of technical grade herbicides and its ameliorating effects on herbicide toxicity to chickpea grown in herbicide treated soils. The quizalafop-p-ethyl and clodinafop-tolerant Mesorhizobium isolate MRC4 recovered from the nodules of chickpea plants significantly produced IAA, siderophores, hydrogen cyanide and ammonia in medium amended with or without technical grade quizalafop-p-ethyl and clodinafop. Quizalafop-p-ethyl at 40, 80 and 120 μg kg−1 soil and clodinafop at 400, 800 and 1200 μg kg−1 soil in general, decreased the growth attributes of chickpea plants inoculated with Mesorhizobium MRC4 and un-inoculated chickpeas. The three concentrations of quizalafop-p-ethyl were comparatively more toxic and substantially decreased biomass, nodulation and leghaemoglobin content, nutrient uptake, seed yield and grain protein over the un-inoculated chickpea. Interestingly, Mesorhizobium isolate MRC4 with any concentration of the two herbicides significantly increased the measured parameters when compared to the plants grown in soils treated solely (without inoculant) with similar concentration of each herbicide. Conclusively, Mesorhizobium isolate MRC4 could be exploited as bio-inoculant for facilitating chickpea growth under herbicide stress.  相似文献

Our purpose in this research was to determine the response of anti-oxidative enzymes of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) when carbendazim applied as soil drench at 0, 5, 50, and 100 mg kg−1. The changes in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) enzymes were measured in roots, stems, and leaves of cucumber. The plants were sampling at cotyledon phase (14 days) and florescence phase (56 days). A strong correlation between anti-oxidant content and carbendazim concentration was observed. As concentration increased, the activities of SOD and CAT increased in roots and leaves. While in stems, SOD and CAT activities were increased in florescence phase and declined in cotyledon phase. The content of GPX increased in stems, and declined in leaves. Higher levels of SOD, CAT, and GPX were observed in cucumber cotyledons than the older leaves. The present study suggested that carbendazim treatments had different effects on cucumber anti-oxidant system in different tissues. It was concluded that cotyledons might play an important role for adaptation as the carbendazim concentration increased, and the ability of mature cucumber to maintain a balance between the formation and detoxification of activated oxygen species appeared likely to enhance. On the basis of our observations, we conclude that increased SOD, CAT and GPX activity provides plant with increased carbendazim stress tolerance.  相似文献

Forty-nine greenhouses of vegetable crops were surveyed in southeast Spain at the beginning of the disease season in December 1992 to estimate frequencies of resistance to benzimidazoles, dicarboximides and N -phenylcarbamates (NPC) in B. cinerea . Out of 261 isolates collected, 28% were sensitive to both benzimidazoles and dicarboximides, 15% were benzimidazole-resistant and dicarboximide-sensitive, 8% were benzimidazole-sensitive and dicarboximide-resistant and 46% were benzimidazole- and dicarboximide-resistant. Resistance to benzimidazole, dicarboximide and N -phenylcarbamate was determined by measuring the ability of each isolate to grow in the presence of carbendazim, procymidone and diethofencarb fungicides respectively. Carbendazim- or procymidone- resistant isolates were found in all surveyed greenhouses. Three isolates were found with resistance to carbendazim, procymidone and diethofencarb collected in two adjacent greenhouses that were sprayed with the carbendazim and diethofencarb mixture. All other isolates were sensitive to the mixture because they were either sensitive to carbendazim and resistant to diethofencarb or vice versa. Fitness of 31 isolates of B. cinerea was determined in vivo by measuring their sporulation and lesion growth rate on leaf disks. No fitness costs were associated with resistance to iprodione (dicarboximide) and benomyl (benzimidazole). Isolates with EC50 values higher than 101 mg/L for benomyl and 1.6 mg/L for iprodione were considered to be field resistant (they caused visible lesions on cucumber leaf disks treated with each fungicide).  相似文献

In the present study cytogenetic effects of atrazine herbicide, were examined on the root meristem cells of Allium cepa and Vicia faba. Test concentrations were chosen by calculating EC50 values of formulated atrazine against both the test systems which determined to be 30 mg l−1 for A. cepa and 35 mg l−1 for V. faba, respectively. For cytogenetic effects root meristem cells of A. cepa were exposed to 15, 30 or 60 mg l−1 whereas V. faba to 17.5, 35 or 70 mg l−1 for 4 or 24 h. Roots exposed for 4 or 24 h, after sampling, were left in water for 24 h recovery and sampled at 24 h post-exposure. A set of onion bulbs or seedlings of V. faba exposed to DMSO (0.3%) was run parallel for negative control. Treatment of atrazine significantly and dose-dependently inhibited the mitotic index (MI) and induced micronucleus formation (MN) chromosome aberrations (CA) and mitotic aberrations (MA) in both the test systems at 4 or 24 h. Root meristem cells examined at 24 h post-exposure also revealed significant (p < 0.001) frequencies of MN, CA or MA despite considerable decline. Chromosome breaks and fragments were found to be major CA whereas C-metaphase, chromosome bridges and laggards were prevalent MA. Results of our study, indicate that atrazine may produce genotoxic effects in plants. Further, both the plant bioassays found to be sensitive indicators for the genotoxicity assessment as the outcome of majority of in vivo/in vitro mammalian tests are comparable.  相似文献

The toxicity of deltamethrin, bifenthrin, and endosulfan to the fourth-instar larvae of rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis (Walker), was measured at 17, 27, and 37 °C. The three insecticides all displayed a positive temperature coefficient between 17 and 37 °C. The temperature coefficients of deltamethrin, bifenthrin, and endosulfan were 5.59, 1.68, and 2.85, respectively. However, temperature coefficients of deltamethrin and bifenthrin between 17 and 27 °C and between 27 and 37 °C varied. The inhibition of the above three insecticides to mitochondrial Na+-K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase from the fourth-instar larvae of rice stem borer was determined at 17, 27, and 37 °C. The inhibition of deltamethrin to the specific activities of Na+-K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase showed a negative temperature coefficient, but endosulfan exhibited a positive temperature coefficient. Inhibition of bifenthrin exhibited the contrary temperature coefficients between Na+-K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase and a negative temperature coefficient for the former and a positive temperature coefficient for the later.  相似文献

Dichlofluanid controlled cane spot ( Elsinoë veneta ) of raspberry cv. Mailing Jewel when applied before harvest in a four-spray programme, but carbendazim, vinclozolin and iprodione were ineffective. Lesions predominated in the fruit-bearing region of canes in a zone 46-120 cm above soil level. Bait plants exposed for periods of 2 weeks in two infected plantations in north-east Scotland developed lesions, after incubation for 4-6 weeks, only on internodes which were the youngest at the time of exposure. Infection occurred in all periods from mid-April to late July. The infection of bait plants was related to the distribution of lesions on canes in the spray trial.
An isolate of E. veneta obtained from a plantation sprayed with carbendazim and vinclozolin was resistant when tested in vitro to carbendazim, benomyl and thiophanate-methyl. This isolate and another MBC-sensitive strain were both relatively insensitive to the dicarboximide fungicides iprodione and vinclozolin.  相似文献
