Pigs inoculated intranasally with Haemophilus parahaemolyticus, serotype 2, resisted challenge 3 weeks later with serotypes 2, 4 and 5 without showing clinical symptoms. The pigs were sacrificed 2 days after challenge, and post mortem examination showed a chronic pleuropneumonia from which only serotype 2 was re-isolated. Pigs inoculated intranasally with H. parahaemolyticus, serotype 2, showed no clinical symptoms when challenged 3 weeks later with serotype 1. Post mortem examination revealed a chronic pleuropneumonia with areas of necrosis from which H. parahaemolyticus, serotype 2, was re-isolated, but also small areas of a more acute fibrinous pneumonia from which serotype 1 was re-isolated. The control pig inoculated with only serotype 1 showed a severe acute fibrinous pleuropneumonia. The results indicate that a considerable cross immunity exists between the various serotypes of H. parahaemolyticus. 相似文献

Serotypes 1,2,4 and 5 of Haemophilus parahaemolyticus were inoculated into, respectively, 4,4,2 and 5 pigs. Serum samples were tested for circulating antibodies by the modified complement fixation test (CF test). When individual serotypes were used as antigen, titers were found only to the serotype which had been used for inoculation. Using antigen in which the serotypes were pooled, antibodies were demonstrated in sera from all the pigs. The CF titers obtained with the pooled antigen were equivalent to those found with each serotype separately. When the CF test was used for serological examination of field sera there was full agreement between the results obtained with the pooled antigen and those obtained with serotype 2 antigen alone. No cross reactions were found with the pooled antigen in herds that were sero-positive to Haemophilus parasuis, strain 4800. The experiment has shown that there is no serological cross reaction between serotypes 1, 2, 4 and 5 when they are used as antigen in the CF test. Also, the results imply that with a pool of the different serotypes of Haemophilus paralyticus as antigen similar results may be obtained as with the single serotype 2 antigen. 相似文献

Abstract Extract A slaughterhouse survey (Nottingham and Urselmann, 1961) demonstrated that salmonellae could be recovered from 6.3% of faecal samples of spring born calves slaughtered within a few days of birth. From 1964 to 1967 inclusive, a large sample (7,696) of spring born calves, from a randomly-selected group of dairy properties in a single area, has been examined for excretion of salmonellae prior to leaving the farm. Salmonella organisms were recovered from 4.3%, 1%, 1.7% and 0.3% of faecal samples, respectively, for the above years (Robinson, 1966a; R. A. Robinson &; W. A. Royal, unpubl. data). A smaller sample (371) of autumn born calves from another district, examined in 1965 and 1966, revealed that 7.4% and 11%, respectively, of animals were excreting salmonellae in the faeces. 相似文献

Ovine contagious foot rot may cause lameness in sheep, resulting in decreased wool growth and low weight gain. Affected neonatal lambs are difficult to treat, and treatment is labor intensive; thus, a method of prevention is warranted. Vaccination of ewes with a multivalent vaccine in an oil adjuvant induced development of antibody to the somatic O antigen of Bacteroides nodosus, and this antibody was detected in serum of newborn lambs after consumption of colostrum from the vaccinated ewes. Antibody titers were determined in 48 unvaccinated ewe/lamb pairs, and in 50 once-vaccinated and 78 twice-vaccinated pairs. Serum and colostrum O-agglutinin titers to B nodosus were determined by a microtitration agglutination test. Lambs from vaccinated ewes had significantly (P less than 0.05) higher O-agglutinin titers than those from unvaccinated ewes, and double vaccination of ewes resulted in the highest potentially protective titers (greater than 1:2,400) in ewes and lambs. 相似文献

Serum gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) levels in blood samples taken from normal calves which bad suckled colostrum were much higher than those found in healthy adult cattle. Levels of over 60 times the normal adult level were observed. These high levels of GGT took approximately 5 weeks to decline to adult values. Calves which appeared to have not received or absorbed colostrum had GGT levels which would be considered normal in adult cattle. A calf with serum gamma globulin levels which indicated an intermediate amount of colostrum absorption had a level of GGT which was intermediate between that expected for normal adult cattle and that found in calves which had more fully absorbed colostrum. The mean GGT level observed in colostrum from 6 newly-calved cows was over 800 times the mean serum GGT level of the same 6 cows. It therefore appears most likely that GGT is concurrently absorbed with colostrum by calves and this gives rise to the very high levels seen in normal calves. Calves with very high levels of serum GGT also had raised levels of alkaline phosphatase (AP) which slowly declined but never reached normal adult levels within the 53-day period of observation. It therefore appears that high levels of both GGT and AP are achieved by calves at the time of colostrum absorption and it is concluded that clinical interpretation of serum GGT and AP levels in young calves is closely dependent upon parallel knowledge of their serum gamma globulin levels. 相似文献

These high serum levels declined rapidly reaching a stable level approximately 60% higher than normal adult values by 24 days of age. Newborn lambs which had not yet consumed colostrum had GGT levels which would be considered normal in adult sheep. The GGT concentration in ewes' colostrum was up to 470 times normal serum levels. There was a significant positive correlation between serum GGT and gamma globulin levels in blood samples taken from lambs within 24 hours of birth. Lambs' serum alkaline phosphatase (AP) and serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT) levels also rose concurrently with the absorption of colostral gamma globulin, with the day 1 AP values being significantly correlated with the serum gamma globulin levels. Serum AP levels declined gradually but were still well above normal adult levels at 45 days of age while SGOT levels returned to normal adult levels by two to three days after birth. It is concluded therefore that, as previously shown in calves, lambs acquire high levels of serum GGT activity from their mothers' colostrum in proportion to the amount of gamma globulin absorbed and also show a concurrent rise in serum AP activity. The pathologico-anatomic and even more the histological pattern of experimental Haemophilus parahaemolyticus pleuropneumonia in specific-pathogen-free piglets was found to be characteristic in the peracute, acute, and subacute-chronic stages of the disease. It is an infection which can be morphologically differentiated from other forms of pneumonia in swine primarily by three factors, localisation of the changes, inflammation, and a typical cell response. Changes following experimental Haemophilus parasuis infection were found to occur irregularly on serous skins and, in continuation, in the lung and joints. These were not characteristic and failed to exhibit morphological peculiarities. 相似文献

In animal breeding programs, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) markers can be used to identify sires that are less susceptible to disease. These DNA markers are typically discovered in populations that display differences in susceptibility. To find those differences, it was hypothesized that sires influence their offspring responses to infection with H. parasuis. To identify differences in susceptibility, colostrum-deprived pigs derived from 6 sires were inoculated with a virulent strain of H. parasuis serovar 5. Pigs were infected at 21-d of age and euthanized 1, 2, or 3 days post-infection. Rectal temperatures, bacterial detection, clinical signs, and lesions were measured by comparing disease susceptibility in the offspring from each sire. The effect of the sire on the severity of disease in the offspring was statistically analyzed using to a 2-way ANOVA with sire and test day as fixed effects. Significant differences among sires were found for lesions, rectal temperatures from days 0-1 and 0-2 (P < 0.05) and marginal effects for clinical signs (P = 0.08). On average, the offspring of sire H94 was the most susceptible to challenge. Responses to infection were categorized to determine the clinical responses and analyzed by Chi square. Overall, 10% of all pigs infected were fully resistant to H. parasuis infection. Boar H94 didn't produce any fully resistant offspring. Differences in susceptibility to H. parasuis were observed, and the results support the hypothesis that sires influence their offspring's response to infection. Tissues from this population could be used to identify DNA markers for genetic selection of sires that produce offspring more resistant to H. parasuis infection. 相似文献

Reference strains for Haemophilus parasuis serovars 1 to 7 were examined for virulence by inoculation of guinea pigs. Guinea pig response to intraperitoneal inoculation was similar for the 7 reference strains. However, apparent differences in virulence were detected after intratracheal inoculation. Cells of the references strains for serovars 1 and 5 were most invasive, causing moribundity or death at higher doses and a persistent septicemia at lower doses. Haemophilus parasuis could be isolated from respiratory and systemic sites; purulent bronchopneumonia, pericarditis, and pleuritis were apparent in infected guinea pigs. Inoculation of cells of the reference strains for serovars 2 and 6 also resulted in bronchopneumonia and moribundity or death in some guinea pigs; however, reisolation of H parasuis and microscopic lesions at necropsy were less pronounced than those observed with serovars 1 and 5. Inoculation of cells of serovars 3, 4 and 7 induced only transient clinical signs and minimal evidence of H parasuis infection at necropsy. The data from intratracheal inoculation of guinea pigs are similar to data from other investigations in swine, indicating differences in the pathogenic potential of H parasuis strains. Thus, guinea pigs may be useful as a laboratory animal model for examining cellular factors associated with virulence and immunogenicity of H parasuis. 相似文献

Antibodies to Hypoderma lineatum were transferred to calves via colostrum. The antibodies transferred in the colostrum demonstrated specificity to all the H. lineatum first-instar proteins which were resolved by non-denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and were capable of mediating a Type I hypersensitivity reaction. The kinetic decline of colostrum-acquired antibodies, the effect upon development of an autologous humoral response to H. lineatum and the host or parasite protective role of these antibodies are discussed. 相似文献

The virulence of Haemophilus pleuropneumoniae was quantitated for ten and 12 week old pigs following aerosol exposure. The volume and concentration of culture aerosolized, the estimated numbers of organisms inhaled by the pigs and the mortality rates at 72 hours postexposure were computed and used to calculate the LD50. There was correlation between the concentration of culture aerosolized, the amount of the estimated inhaled dose and the mortality rates. The ten week old pigs were apparently more susceptible to aerosols of H. pleuropneumoniae than the 12 week old pigs. The LD50 value or a multiple of it appears to be a reasonable basis for a standardized aerosol challenge of the immunity of pigs vaccinated with experimental or commercial H. pleuropneumoniae vaccines. 相似文献
