Lighting regimens and plasma LH and FSH in broiler breeders   总被引:8,自引:3,他引:5  
Egg production by meat-type fowl is markedly inferior to that from commercial laying hens, and so, to assess the degree to which photorefractoriness might be a contributing factor, male- and female-line broiler breeders were maintained on 8-, 11- or 16-h photoperiods. In addition, to determine the age-related rate of change in response to an increment in photoperiod, other birds were transferred from 8- to 16-h photoperiods at 67 or 124 d. Blood samples were taken from all groups, except those on constant 11-h photoperiods, in both genotypes at 67, 69, 124 and 126 d, and from all lighting groups in the female line at 58 weeks (end of trial), and the plasma was assayed for plasma luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) concentration to investigate possible correlations with rate of sexual maturity, total egg numbers and terminal rates of lay. Prepubertal LH was consistently higher for the female line than for the male line, and higher for 16-h birds than for 8-h birds. At 69 and 126 d, LH values were not significantly different from those 2 d earlier for 8-h birds, but significantly reduced for 16-h birds. There was an increase in LH following photostimulation at 67 d, but no significant change after the 124-d light increase. There were no significant differences in FSH between the two genetic lines, nor any effect of photostimulation at 67 or 124 d. There was a tendency for FSH in 8-h birds to be higher than for 16-h birds, and this difference became significant for male-line birds at 67 d. At 58 weeks, LH was higher for constant 11- and 16-h birds and for birds photostimulated at 67 d than for constant 8-h controls or birds transferred from 8 to 16h at 124 d. Neither baseline nor photoinduced prepubertal changes in plasma LH nor FSH were found to be of value for predicting age at sexual maturity or subsequent rates of egg production. At 58 weeks, LH was not generally correlated with sexual maturity, total eggs or terminal rates of lay, however, there was a negative correlation with age at first egg in birds photostimulated at 124 d. It must be concluded that plasma LH and FSH concentrations are of minimal value to the broiler breeder industry for predicting the degree of photorefractoriness, the age at sexual maturity, or subsequent egg production.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the changes in secretion of inhibin and cellular localization of the inhibin alpha and inhibin/activin (beta(A) and beta(B)) subunits in male Japanese quail from 1 to 7 weeks after hatching. The post-hatch profile of plasma luteinizing hormone (LH), immunoreactive (ir) inhibin and testosterone were measured by radioimmunoassay. Testes were immunostained by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method (ABC) using polyclonal antisera raised against inhibin alpha, inhibin/activin beta(A) and inhibin/activin beta(B) from one week of age to sexual maturity. Testicular weight increased gradually until 4 weeks and abruptly increased from 5 weeks of age onwards. The plasma concentrations of LH and ir-inhibin increased significantly at 5 weeks of age, and the plasma concentration of testosterone increased significantly at 6 weeks of age. Pituitary contents of LH showed a steady increase until 6 weeks of age and then abruptly increased at 7 weeks of age. Coincident to the increase in plasma testosterone, the testicular contents of testosterone significantly increased from 5 weeks through sexual maturity. Immunohistochemically, localization of the inhibin/activin alpha, beta(A) and beta(B) subunits was found in the Sertoli and Leydig cells at all ages of development from one week of age to sexual maturity. These results suggest that Sertoli and Leydig cells are the major source of inhibin secretion during development in male Japanese quail.  相似文献

Luteinizing hormone (LH) was quantified in pony mares during artificially induced sexual maturation. Ovarian follicular development was also assessed by rectal palpation of the ovaries. With the exception of large periovulatory LH concentrations in two mares that ovulated, LH concentrations were not significantly different in mares undergoing sexual maturation and thus having marked follicular development when compared with mares that were not undergoing sexual maturation and thus did not have marked follicular development. These results indicate a dissociation in time between the onset of follicular development and the increase in LH which is associated with the first ovulation of the year.  相似文献

1. Shaver White and ISA Brown pullets were reared to 140 d in groups of 8 in cages on a 10-h photoperiod of incandescent light and maintained at an illuminance of 3 or 25 lux, or transferred from 3 to 25 lux or from 25 to 3 lux at 63 or 112 d of age. 2. There was no significant difference in sexual maturity, measured as eggs per 100 bird.d at 139 and 140 d, for ISA Brown maintained on 3 or 25 lux, but Shaver White pullets exposed to constant 3 lux matured significantly later than those maintained on 25 lux. 3. In Shaver Whites, sexual maturity was significantly delayed by an increase from 3 to 25 lux at 63 and 112 d, and advanced by a decrease from 25 to 3 lux at 112 d. Sexual maturity of ISA Browns was not significantly affected by a change in illuminance at 63 or 112 d, though responses were in the same direction as for Shaver Whites. 4. In both breeds, total feed consumed to 112 d was higher for birds on 3 lux than 25 lux, but lower between 112 d and 140 d when birds on 25 lux underwent rapid sexual development. In both breeds, body weight at 63 d was higher for birds exposed to 3 lux than 25 lux, but body weight gain thereafter was similar for the two light intensities. 5. In both breeds, plasma luteinising hormone (LH) concentration at 63 and 112 d was lower in birds maintained on 3 lux than 25 lux. At 63 and 112 d, transfers from 25 to 3 lux depressed, whereas transfers from 3 to 25 lux at 63 d, but not at 112 d, increased plasma LH. 6. Advances or delays in sexual maturity induced by changes in illuminance were not correlated with differences in feed intake, body weight gain, or with changes in plasma LH. 7. One possible explanation for the inverse relationship between the direction of change in illuminance at 63 and 112 d in pullets exposed to a 10-h photoperiod and the age at which they became sexually mature is that changes in light intensity and/or spectral composition affect the entrainment of the circadian rhythm of photoinducibility, to effect a phase shift in the photoinducible phase and/or the responsiveness of phototransduction pathways.  相似文献

1. Brown egg laying pullets were transferred from an 8‐h photoperiod to an 8‐, 10‐, 13‐ or 16‐h photoperiod at 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 or 20–3 weeks of age. Plasma luteinising hormone (LH) concentrations were measured at transfer and 7 and 14 d afterwards.

2. Significant increases in plasma LH occurred following light stimulations at 6, 9 and 12 weeks of age.

3. Changes in LH concentration 7 d after a light increase from 8 h to 8, 10, 13, 16 h were highly correlated with photoperiod length at 9 and 12 weeks of age.

4. Changes in LH were generally poorly correlated with age at sexual maturity, although the reduced influence on age at first egg of a light increase given close to sexual maturity was reflected in minimal LH responses at 18 and 20.3 weeks.  相似文献

The ages of puberty and sexual maturity were histologically determined in 300 dogs, comprising 115 local Nigerian dogs and 185 crosses of local with exotic breeds. The ages ranged from six months to eight and a half years. The age at puberty was estimated to be seven to eight months and the age of sexual maturity to be 10 to 11 months for all the dogs, both local and exotic. Testicular and epididymal dimensions and weights, on average, increased progressively from before puberty until sexual maturity. The same trend was observed in the diameters of seminiferous tubules, the percentage of spermatogenesis and the epididymal sperm reserves. At puberty an average of 51.8 per cent of the caudal epididymal sperm cells of the local dogs had morphological defects compared with 54.5 per cent in the exotic cross breeds. The defects were mostly coiled tails and proximal cytoplasmic droplets. These defects had decreased to an average of 12.8 per cent in all breeds by the time the dogs had attained a mean age of one and a half years. In general the post-pubertal pattern of spermatogenesis in the dogs resembled that of the bull, and the ages at onset of puberty and sexual maturity fall within the range determined for exotic breeds of dogs. There were no significant differences between the local Nigerian dogs and the local cross exotic breeds in the parameters studied.  相似文献

Onset of sexual maturation is a trait of extreme importance both evolutionarily and economically. Unsurprisingly therefore, domestication has acted to reduce the time to sexual maturation in a variety of animals, including the chicken. In comparison with wild progenitor chickens [the Red Junglefowl (RJF)], domestic layer hens attain maturity approximately 20% earlier. In addition, domestic layers also possess larger combs (a sexual ornament), produce more eggs and have denser bones. A large quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis (n=377) was performed using an F(2) intercross between a White Leghorn layer breed and a RJF population, with onset of sexual maturity measured and mapped to three separate loci. This cross has already been analysed for comb mass, egg production and bone allocation. Onset of sexual maturity significantly correlated with comb mass, whilst the genetic architecture for sexual maturity and comb mass overlapped at all three loci. For two of these loci, the QTL for sexual maturity and comb mass were statistically indistinguishable from pleiotropy, suggesting that the alleles that increase comb mass also decrease onset of sexual maturity.  相似文献

We report here a systematic quantitative study of the seminiferous tubular cells of Murrah buffaloes. The most advanced germ cell types in the different age groups (months) were A(0) spermatogonia (SG) (1 and 3), early pachytene (6 and 9), late pachytene (12), secondary spermatocytes (15 and 18), elongating spermatids (21 and 24), elongated spermatids attached to Sertoli cells (30), elongated spermatids detached from Sertoli cells (36) and spermatozoa (42 and 48). Central primitive Sertoli cells (CPSC) and basal primitive Sertoli cells (BPSC) were present in the sex cord of one-month-old calves, while Sertoli cells (SC) were first seen in nine-month-old calves. The number of gonocytes were maximal at six months but they were not seen after this time. Prespermatogonia (PSG) and SG were at a maximum at nine months of age but PSG were not seen after 36 months. The number of SG decreased significantly after nine months up to 36 months of age.Although spermatocytes and spermatids appeared in earlier developmental stages, a rapid increase in their number was recorded after 36 months. The number of SC was maximal in 18-month-old animals. BPSC predominated in the sex cord of animals aged one to six months, SG at 9-12 months of age, primary spermatocytes from 15-30 months and spermatids from 36 to 72 months and in older animals. We concluded that a decrease in the number of SG in buffalo calves after nine months of age might be responsible for a delay in sexual maturity. Moreover, the small number of spermatocytes and spermatids present before 36 months of age may be associated with the low yield of different germ cell divisions and with the cellular degeneration. A rapid increase in the number of spermatocytes and spermatids after 36 months resulted in sexual maturity between 42 and 48 months.  相似文献

The first objective of this study was to determine whether LH and testosterone respond differently to a naloxone injection in relation to varying sexual performance in rams. If differences occurred, the second objective was to determine whether differences would predict variation in sexual performance. From a group of 1.5- to 3-yr-old rams, 20 sexually active and 39 sexually inactive rams were selected based on previously observed sexual behavior with estrual ewes. Each ram was exposed to three estrual ewes for 18 30-min sexual performance tests, and those found to be inactive were given two 30-min sexual partner preference tests. The final distribution was 28 sexually active, 22 inactive, and nine male-oriented rams. Rams were treated with 1.5 mg of naloxone/kg BW in December of Year 1 and again with either 0.75 or 1.5 mg of naloxone/kg BW in November of Year 2. Plasma concentrations of LH and testosterone were evaluated with mixed model analyses for repeated measures separately for each year to coincide with logistic procedures for modeling the probability that rams were sexually active. For Year 1, a sexual activity x age x time interaction for LH after naloxone was observed (P < 0.03). For testosterone, there was a sexual activity x time interaction (P < 0.03), with a similar, early increase for sexually active female-and male-oriented rams compared with a delayed, minimal increase for inactive rams. For Year 2, when all rams were over 2.5 yr of age, a sexual activity x time interaction for both LH and testosterone (P < 0.02) seemed more related to an earlier increase of both hormones for sexually active rams than the increase observed for inactive rams. In addition, sexually active rams had a greater increase in testosterone than inactive rams. No significant difference was observed between 0.75 and 1.50 mg of naloxone/kg BW. Testosterone and LH were used as explanatory variables and sexual activity was used as the response variable in logistic procedures. In Year 1, greatest prediction accuracy was 73.5% using testosterone at 60 min after naloxone injection. In Year 2, the greatest prediction accuracy was 85% using LH at 15 min multiplied by testosterone at 60 min after naloxone. Test repeatability for both years on the same rams was 76%. In conclusion, pattern and magnitude of naloxone-induced changes in endocrine function may facilitate identification of sexually active and inactive rams during the breeding season. Prediction accuracy of the naloxone-based test was 69 to 85%.  相似文献

Meishan pigs are known for their early sexual maturity. On the other hand, they grow slowly. There is no information currently available about the combination of these two characteristics in Meishan pigs. To study the developmental characteristics of Meishan pigs, the plasma concentrations of LH, FSH, inhibin, testosterone, estradiol-17beta, progesterone and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in young Meishan boars were determined using RIA and ELISA. Inhibin decreased with age in weeks, while testosterone and estradiol-17 beta increased. Testosterone increased gradually, and an increase in estradiol-17beta occurred after sexual maturity. IGF-I increased before puberty and subsequently decreased just after puberty like a pubertal IGF-1 surge. FSH, LH and progesterone did not change with age. There was no significant correlation among the hormones. During the experimental period, the Meishan boars showed large individual differences. These differences may depend on the fact that Meishan boar reach maturity at 12 weeks of age and continue to grow thereafter.  相似文献

1. ISA Brown pullets were transferred from 8 to 14 h or from 14 to 8 h photoperiods at 35 or 56 d of age. Controls were maintained on constant 8 or 14 h photoperiods from day 1. 2. Blood samples were obtained immediately before each daylength change and subsequently at 7 d intervals until 1st egg in the treated groups and at 70 d of age and then at 14 d intervals until 1st egg in the constant photoperiod controls. Plasma luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations were determined using homologous radioimmunoassays. 3. Prior to 16 weeks, LH was consistently higher in birds on constant 14 h photoperiods than in those on constant 8 h, but was down-regulated as birds approached maturity so that LH concentrations in the 2 groups were similar during the final 10 d before the first egg was laid. FSH concentrations rose steadily with age but with a tendency for concentrations to be higher in the 8 h than in the 14 h treatment. Birds on constant 8 h daylengths matured 18.3 d later than those on constant 14 h photoperiods. 4. A 6 h increment in photoperiod given at 35 d or 56 d, resulted in an increase in LH within 7 d in both cases. FSH concentration did not respond to an increase in photoperiod at 35 d but rose following the same increase at 56 d. This was associated with a 3-week advance in sexual maturity, whilst age at 1st egg in birds photostimulated at 35 d was similar to the age with a constant 14 h photoperiod. 5. LH concentration fell when photoperiod was reduced from 14 to 8 h at either 35 or 56 d and remained below the constant 8 h controls for many weeks before rising to a concentration not significantly different from other groups in the final 10 d before 1st egg. FSH concentrations in birds exposed to a decreased daylength at 35 d, although more oscillatory, were similar to the constant 8 h photoperiod controls. In birds exposed to the same decrease at 56 d, FSH concentration initially tumbled but was similar in the 2 groups during the latter stages of rearing; neither differed significantly from the constant daylength controls during the 60 d before 1st egg. Sexual maturity in both groups given a reduction in photoperiod was delayed by about 2 weeks compared with constant 8 h controls. 6. Change in FSH concentration following an increase in daylength was a better predictor of age at 1st egg than change in LH. However, FSH concentrations after 14 weeks of age were rather similar in short day and long day controls and in the 2 groups given reductions in photoperiod at 35 d and 56 d, despite differences of nearly 5 weeks in mean age at 1st egg amongst these 4 treatments.  相似文献

1. Comparisons of age, food intake, body weight and body composition at the onset of sexual maturity were made between dwarf and normal chickens from lines selected for high or low juvenile body weight.

2. At the same age birds which had started to lay were significantly heavier and contained significantly more abdominal and carcass fat than those which were not laying.

3. Differences between normal and dwarf pullets within lines varied with genetic background, indicating differences between lines in meeting a body weight or a body composition requirement, or both, for the onset of sexual maturity.

Contents The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sexual activity on concentrations of reproductive hormones in plasma of stallions. In the first experiment, two groups of stallions were monitored for secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone and oestradiol from the beginning until shortly after the end of the breeding season. One group of animals were reserve stallions not used for breeding (group 1, n = 10), the other group consisted of active breeding sires (group 2, n = 8). Blood samples were withdrawn from March to August at 14-day intervals. In sexually nonactive stallions (group 1), seasonal variations in LH, testosterone and oestradiol occurred and concentrations of these hormones reached a maximum in May (p < 0.05). In the breeding stallions (group 2), no significant changes in the concentrations of these hormones were found between March and August. Concentrations of LH and testosterone were significantly lower in breeding stallions than in reserve stallions at most blood sampling times (p < 0.05). In the reserve stallions, oestradiol concentrations were significantly higher than in the breeding stallions in April and in June (p < 0.05). In a second experiment, the effect of regular sexual activity (semen collection three times per week) on the concentration of LH, testosterone and oestradiol was tested in a group of breeding stallions after a period of sexual rest for several weeks. Blood samples were taken once daily starting the day before the first semen collection was performed. Testosterone concentration significantly decreased in the first days after semen collection started (p < 0.05), while LH secretion was only transiently decreased and no effects on oestradiol concentration were found. In both experiments, semen parameters were within the normal range of fertile stallions. No correlations between the sexual drive of the stallions and concentration of reproductive hormones occurred. It can be concluded that in the stallion the secretion of reproductive hormones is influenced by sexual activity. Regular semen collection seems to inhibit testosterone release by unknown mechanisms while the effects on LH and oestradiol secretion are less pronounced.  相似文献

Puberty is associated with an increase in gonadotropin secretion as a result of an increase in gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion. Kisspeptin is considered to play a key role in puberty onset in many mammalian species, including rodents, ruminants and primates. The present study aimed to determine if changes in hypothalamic expression of the KISS1 gene, encoding kisspeptin, are associated with the onset of puberty in pigs. The animals (n=4 in each group) were perfused with 4% paraformaldehyde at 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 months old, as prepubertal stages, and at 5 months old, as the peripubertal stage, following each blood sampling. KISS1 gene expressions in coronal sections of brains were visualized by in situ hybridization. Plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) was measured by radioimmunoassay. KISS1 mRNA signals were observed in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) at all ages examined without any significant difference in the number of KISS1-expressing cells, indicating that the KISS1 gene is constantly expressed in the ARC throughout pubertal development in pigs. The plasma LH concentration was the highest in 0-month-old piglets and significantly decreased in the 1- and 2 month-old groups (P<0.05), suggesting a developing negative feedback mechanism affecting gonadotropin release during the prepubertal period. Considering the potent stimulating effect of kisspeptin on gonadotropin release in prepubertal pigs, kisspeptin secretion rather than kisspeptin synthesis may be responsible for the onset of puberty in pigs.  相似文献

During the proestrous and estrous periods in 12 beagles, the following parameters were measured daily: the horizontal dimensions of the vulva, vaginal cytology, and serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and progesterone concentrations. Measurements of serum LH concentrations allowed for the identification of the LH surge and the optimal time for artificial insemination (AI). Nine out of the 12 beagles became pregnant through AI and completed a gestation. Shrinkage in the horizontal dimensions of the vulva (i.e., vulvar shrinkage) was primarily observed prior and subsequent to the LH surge. In six of the nine (66.7%) beagles that became pregnant, vulvar shrinkage was observed on the days in which the LH surge was confirmed, and the rate of vulvar shrinkage tended to be greater at higher serum LH concentrations. Further vulvar shrinkage was identified in all nine beagles within two days of the LH surge. An increase in the serum progesterone concentration was observed after the LH surge in each of the beagles that became pregnant, together with clinical signs of estrous behavior (i.e., standing heat) as well as a change in vulva condition from swollen to soft. This demonstrates that vulvar shrinkage is induced in response to the onset of the LH surge and that the LH surge can be predicted through the measurement of the horizontal dimensions of the vulva, vaginal cytology, and the assessment of serum progesterone concentrations in beagles.  相似文献

1. We analysed the number and size of different ovarian cell subpopulations of newly-hatched chicks by ovarian cell suspension count and morphometric/stereological methods as well as delta5-3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (delta5-3beta HSD) activity in these cells treated in vivo with LH during embryonic development. 2. Fertile White Leghorn eggs received 1 microg LH applied to the chorioallantoic membrane on days 13, 15, and 17 of incubation. All animals were killed within 24 h after hatching, the left ovary was dissected and processed. 3. The results indicate that the number of germ, pregranulosa, interstitial and undifferentiated cells was not affected by LH treatment. However, we observed an increase in the size of individual interstitial cells of the ovarian medulla. In these cells, delta5-3beta HSD activity was increased in response to LH. 4. These findings suggest that LH does not exert a proliferative effect on the cells of the prefollicular ovary of the chick and that interstitial cells can be target cells for LH, increasing their steroidogenic activity due to LH treatment.  相似文献

In both sexes erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and erythrocyte volume (EV) fluctuated with age. The relationship between ESR and EV remained constant for both cocks and non‐laying hens over the whole age‐range. With the onset of sexual maturity in hens the ESR was found to be raised above the levels for non‐laying hens and another relationship between ESR and EV was established.

The increased ESR at sexual maturity was related to the increase of lipophospho‐protein in the blood plasma.  相似文献

1. Plasma concentrations of luteinising hormone (LH), comb size and body weight were measured between 46 and 208 d of age in intact and castrated cockerels from lines of selected and control Australorp domestic chickens. The selected line had been selected for increased rate of lay by reducing oviposition intervals within sequences. The cockerels were reared and maintained on 15.25 h light/d. 2. Concentrations of plasma LH in the intact control cockerels were low in the 'immature' phase (less than 100 d old) and increased during the 'mature' phase (older than 175 d) with a peak occurring when the testes are beginning to grow at the onset of the 'mature' phase. In comparison with the control line of cockerels, the selected line had significantly higher plasma LH concentrations at the onset of the 'mature' phase. Selection had no effect on the mean concentration of plasma LH in either the immature phase or a few weeks after the onset of the mature phase. 3. There was no effect of selection in sibling females for higher rates of lay on changes in comb size or body weight during sexual maturation in the intact cockerels. 4. Castration at 45-46 d of age resulted in increased plasma LH concentrations and no comb growth. Plasma LH concentration increased progressively between 40-208 d. There was no difference between the two lines of cockerels in plasma LH concentration or rate of body growth after castration. 5. It is concluded that selection of females for a change in the rate of egg production has resulted in increased plasma LH concentrations in sibling males around the onset of sexual maturation. Selection appears to have caused this effect by altering an unidentified component of the inhibitory feedback mechanism which controls the tonic secretion of LH.  相似文献

Behavioral, ovarian and endocrine correlates were determined in seven bitches experiencing first estrus, and the results compared with previous data obtained on multiparous females. One or more atypical reproductive patterns were observed in certain bitches at the pubertal estrus. The ability of pubertal dogs to display normal reproductive relationships appeared to be related to age, because animals that exhibited normal sexual behavior and endocrine profiles tended to be older than females that produced aberrant patterns. For the latter group, atypical observations included lack of sexual receptivity and reduced or inconsistent patterns of circulating concentrations of estradiol-17 beta, luteinizing hormone (LH) or progesterone. Ovulation was confirmed in all four pubertal dogs subjected to laparoscopy, including two bitches that failed to demonstrate estrous behavior. In individual animals, it appeared that inadequate or sporadic elevations in titers of estradiol-17 beta during the preovulatory phase of the cycle were associated with reduced or abbreviated LH surge concentrations, and the latter were subsequently related to an absent or only minor preovulatory rise in serum progesterone. Reduced preovulatory estradiol-17 beta concentrations and a delayed increase in circulating progesterone were also associated with a lack of sexual receptivity. These results (1) suggest that hormonal insufficiencies or irregularities exist in certain bitches at the pubertal estrus and that such atypical activity appears more characteristic of the first than later adult estrous periods, and (2) are consistent with the theory that estrogen preconditioning and a decrease in the endogenous estrogen to progesterone ratio are important in the initiation of sexual receptivity in this species.  相似文献

The objective was to determine if the endocrine status of the animal dictates the responsiveness of gonadotrophs to estradiol, activin, inhibin and follistatin; hormones implicated in the differential release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Bovine pituitaries were obtained at 13 (n=8), 30 (n=24) and 66 (n=8) h after the onset of estrus, corresponding to before, during and the end of the first FSH increase of the estrous cycle which follows the pre-ovulatory gonadotropin surge in heifers. Heifers slaughtered at 30 h received no treatment, or were treated with progesterone with or without estradiol before slaughter to suppress the first transient FSH increase. Secretion of FSH from cultured pituitary cells, reflecting the prior in vivo status, was greater (P<0.01) at 30 h than 13 or 66 h, whereas, LH secretion was less (P<0.01) at 13 h compared with 30 h. Treatment with exogenous steroids decreased (P<0.05) the pituitary gland's ability to subsequently secrete FSH and LH. Inhibin and, to a greater extent, estradiol decreased (P<0.01) mean FSH secretion but increased (P<0.05) mean LH secretion. These findings suggest that estradiol and inhibin both have the ability to differentially modulate basal gonadotropin secretion during the first FSH increase of the bovine estrous cycle. Differential regulation of LH and FSH is mediated via an alteration in gonadotropin biosynthesis and basal secretion. Furthermore, the secretory capability of cultured pituitary cells and basal gonadotropin secretion reflect the prior endocrine status of the animal from which pituitaries were obtained.  相似文献
