A test for responsiveness to song structure and programming in female sparrows

Female song sparrows, primed with implants of estradiol, gave the solicitation display for copulation in response to acoustic stimulation with song. This technique demonstrated that female song sparrows respond more strongly to conspecific song than to alien songs, that they discriminate on the basis of both overall temporal pattern and syllabic structure, that they respond more to several song types than to repetitions of one song, and that they are most responsive to several song types if the songs are organized in bouts of a single type, as they are normally delivered by a male song sparrow. These results demonstrate a substantial correspondence between the structure and programming of the singing behavior of male birds and female responsiveness to song.

Scoliosis in chickens: responsiveness of severity and incidence to dietary copper

The severity and incidence of spinal lesions were manipulated in a line of chickens susceptible to scoliosis by varying their dietary intake of copper. A decrease in expression of the lesion was related to increased intake of copper. The change in expression, however, appeared to be related only indirectly to the defects in collagen cross-linking, maturation, and deposition known to be associated with dietary copper deficiency. Thus, a dietary constituent in the range of normal intakes may act as an environmental factor in the expression of scoliosis.     

Nicotine is chemotactic for neutrophils and enhances neutrophil responsiveness to chemotactic peptides

Neutrophils contribute to chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema associated with cigarette smoking. Nicotine was found to be chemotactic for human neutrophils but not monocytes, with a peak activity at approximately 31 micromolar. In lower concentrations (comparable to those in smokers' plasma), nicotine enhanced the response of neutrophils to two chemotactic peptides. In contrast to most other chemoattractants for neutrophils, however, nicotine did not affect degranulation or superoxide production. Nicotine thus may promote inflammation and consequent lung injury in smokers.     

表面活性剂复配及其对百草枯增效试验

试验了十二烷基苯磺酸、OP - 1 5、AES 3种表面活性剂和其复配后组合物的表面张力及接触角的变化情况 ,通过表面张力法确定其临界胶束浓度CMC ,根据CMC值选择合适的表面活性剂并按一定浓度添加到百草枯药液中 ,对其进行田间除草试验。结果表明 :OP - 1 5分别与十二烷基苯磺酸和AES复配后对百草枯增效效果最好     

淮山氮磷钾3414试验初报

对淮山进行氮、磷、钾3414试验,结果表明:在试验条件下,淮山产量与氮磷钾施用量之间存在显著的回归关系,N、P2O5、K2O每667 m2施用量分别为15.8 kg、6.0 kg、18.8 kg时,淮山可获得最佳经济效益,产量为1515.7 kg。     

眠乃宁对黑熊的麻醉试验

为了掌握眼乃宁的药性和适用于黑熊的麻醉剂量，先后对218头黑熊做有效麻醉剂量的选择与观察，结果表明，眼乃宁对黑熊的最佳麻醉剂量为3．5mL／100kg体重．

The procedure for estimating its statistical significance is examined.     

Methamphetamine-induced insulin release

Administration of methamphetamine or amphetamine to rats and mice produces a rapid increase in the level of immunoassayable plasma insulin not attributable to hyperglycemia. While in the mouse this release of insulin is followed consistently by a profound hypoglycemia, in the rat this response is variable. Studies in vitro demonstrate that insulin is released by a direct effect of methamphetamine on the pancreas.
