The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for bovine tuberculosis (TB) in a free-roaming, capture-mark-recapture monitored possum Trichosurus vulpecula population in a 22-ha study site at Castlepoint, New Zealand from 1 April 1989 to 31 March 1994. A matched case-control design was used to evaluate the influence of sex, habitat and contact opportunities on TB risk. Cases comprised possums identified as TB-positive throughout the study period. Controls were selected from the group of possums that were captured and showed no clinical signs of TB throughout the study period. Measures derived from a social network analysis of possum capture locations such as degree, clustering coefficient (CC) and betweenness were used to represent potential contact opportunities among possums. Network analysis measures recorded for individual possums in the 12-month period before a diagnosis of TB were evaluated in a conditional logistic regression model. We found no evidence of an association between case status and the total number of possums with which there was potential contact (degree) (P=0.5). The odds of cases being exposed to unit increases in the number of TB-positive contacts was 2.50 (95% CI 1.24-5.05; P<0.01) times that of controls. This effect was conditional on the total number of potential contacts made, with a negative interaction with increasing degree. These findings indicate that potential contact with TB-positive possums increases the odds of disease whereas potential contact with large numbers of possums does not. This suggests that multiple contacts with TB-positive possum(s) are necessary for transmission of TB and this is more likely to occur in networks that are smaller. We challenge the hypothesis that contact with large numbers of individuals increases the probability of becoming TB infected and argue that individual contact behaviour is a determinant of the creation of TB foci within free-living possum populations.  相似文献

This paper reports the investigation of farm-level risk factors for confirmed bovine tuberculosis (TB), based on a retrospective cohort study of a population of cattle in the lower North Island of New Zealand. Data were obtained from the TB testing surveillance programme operational in this area since the mid-1970s and comprised 190,665 cattle-years at risk from July 1980 to June 2004 (inclusive). A mixed-effects Poisson regression model was used to investigate the influence of farm-level covariates on the number of cattle confirmed with TB throughout the study period. This model was interpreted in context of depopulation strategies for the wildlife reservoir for TB, the brushtail possum Trichosurus vulpecula, that were applied in this area. The model showed that, despite intensification of possum control strategies over time, proximity to forest parks (a principal possum habitat in this area) remained a significant predictor of the number of confirmed cases of TB detected per farm per year. Our analyses showed a significant, three-fold increase in TB risk in dairy cattle relative to beef conditional on the size of local possum habitat, and confirmed the positive influence of cattle population size and the presence of previous infection status as a determinant of the number of confirmed TB cases per farm per year.  相似文献

We describe the temporal and geographical distribution of confirmed cases of bovine tuberculosis (TB) in a population of cattle in the south-east of the North Island of New Zealand. Data were derived from routine TB testing conducted between 1980 and 2003 and included details for 69 farms. Four six-year periods were defined to coincide with changes in depopulation strategies against the wildlife TB reservoir, the brushtail possum Trichosurus vulpecula. For the periods 1980 to 1985 and 1986 to 1991 the median annual incidence rate of TB was 0.4 and 4.7 cases per 1000 cattle-years at risk, respectively. For the period 1992 to 2003 the median annual incidence rate of TB decreased to 1.8 cases per 1000 cattle-years at risk, coincident with the use of poisoning to control possums in the surrounding forest park (a major possum habitat area). We identified clusters of TB cases adjacent to the forest park and found no evidence of spatio-temporal interaction of TB risk among farms. Our findings support the hypothesis that possums living in the forest park are a source of bovine TB in this area and that farm-to-farm spread of disease was not an important infection mechanism.  相似文献

A retrospective cohort study was conducted to determine the risk of bovine tuberculosis (TB) among animals sold out from herds that were free to trade animals during the year 2005 according to their bovine TB testing history during the year 2005. The present study sample comprised of 338,960 animals, of which 124,360 animals were sold out from herds that were restricted from trading at some stage during 2005 (bovine TB 'exposed') and 214,600 animals that were sold from herds which did not have their trading status withdrawn in 2005 (bovine TB 'non-exposed'). The overall risk of a diagnosis of bovine TB during the two-year period after the animals were sold out was 0.69 per cent. The odds of bovine TB were 1.91 higher for animals sold out from bovine TB 'exposed' herds compared with animals sold out from bovine TB 'non-exposed' herds (OR 95 per cent CI: 1.76 to 2.07, P<0.0001). Ten per cent of animals identified during field surveillance with bovine TB did so less than two months after being sold out in 2005, and similarly, 10 per cent of the animals classified as bovine TB positive by finding a bovine TB lesion at slaughter did so within 25 days (or less) of being sold out in 2005.  相似文献

Data from Thai Landrace sows were used to estimate the genetic parameters and trends for production and reproduction traits, over the first four parities. The reproduction traits investigated were age at first conception (AFC), total number of piglets born per litter (TB) and weaning to first service interval (WSI). The reproduction data was gathered from 9194 litters born between 1993 and 2005. The production measures were average daily gain (ADG) and backfat thickness (BF). These were recorded from 4163 boars and 15 171 gilts. Analyses were carried out using a multivariate animal model inputting average information restricted maximum likelihood procedures. Heritability estimates on the reproduction traits for AFC was 0.21, for TB in the first four parities it ranged from 0.02 to 0.11 and for WSI over the first three parities it ranged from 0.16 to 0.18. Heritability estimates for production traits were: 0.31 (ADG) and 0.45 (BF). AFC was genetically correlated favorably with TB (− 0.48) and WSI (0.35) in the first parity. Genetic trends were 4.71 g, − 0.23 mm and 0.23 days per year for ADG, BF and AFC respectively. There was no genetic progress for the other traits. It was concluded that selection for low AFC will increase TB and decrease WSI. The results further revealed that the ongoing selection being used improved growth rate and reduced backfat thickness. However, there was no genetic improvement in TB.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The topology of the network of contacts between individuals has important effects on infectious disease dynamics within a population. Here we examine for the first time a network of contacts between training yards that occurred through racing. OBJECTIVES: To explore the topology of this network and to consider the effects of the network on the potential for disease transmission. METHODS: Race data from one week was analysed. Contacts were defined as occurring between trainers that raced horses in the same race and hence one trainer could contact another trainer several times. A connection was said to exist between trainers who contacted each other at least once. The network of contacts and connections that occurred during the study period was reconstructed and analysed. RESULTS: All 466 trainers formed a single large network. The network of contacts had a short average path length and high clustering and was, therefore, characteristic of a 'small world network'. The probability distribution of the number of contacts was scale-free, whereas that for the number of connections followed a single-scale. The effect of the network would be to increase R0, such that an agent that would tend toward extinction in a homogenously mixing population may persist in the observed network. CONCLUSIONS: The observed small world network topology has important implication for the transmission and, therefore, the control of infectious agents in this population. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: Effective disease control and surveillance must take account of the contact structure of the population. Further studies investigating other contact definitions and other populations are now required.  相似文献

Due to the probable role played by rodents as a reservoir for the transmission of the EMC virus to pigs, the experiment reported here was performed in order to assess the transmission rate of EMCV within a rat population. Twenty-five eight-week-old Wistar rats housed in individual plastic cages were experimentally infected either with a Greek myocardial EMCV strain (5 rats with a 0.2 x 10(6) TCID50 dose per rat and 10 rats with a 0.5 x 10(4.5) TCID50 dose per rat, oronasally) or a Belgian myocardial EMCV strain (10 rats with a 0.5 x 10(4.5) TCID50 dose per rat, oronasally). Two to five days later, each inoculated rat was moved to a new clean cage and coupled with a contact rat to compare the pathogenicity of the two strains and to estimate the basic reproduction ratio R0, indicating the level of EMCV transmission. During the experiments, faecal virus excretion was measured as well as the serological response against EMCV. After euthanasia, virus isolation was attempted from different rat tissues. Neither strains produced mortality, nor clinical signs and only low titres of neutralising antibodies were found. All contact rats, however, were infected and the virus was isolated from their faeces and from various tissues. Both 10-pair experiments revealed a point estimate for the R0 of infinity (95%-CI for both the Greek and Belgian EMCV strains = 4.48 - infinity), as did the 5-pair experiment with a higher dose of the Greek strain (95%-CI = 1.83 - infinity). Combining the results from the two 10-pair experiments resulted in an estimate for R0 of infinity (95%-CI: 9.87 - infinity). These results indicate that the EMC virus can spread very easily within a rat population by horizontal rat-to-rat transmission (R0 > 1).  相似文献

AIM: To determine the trap-catch index (an estimate of abundance) of brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) populations infected with bovine tuberculosis (Tb; Mycobacterium bovis) that must be achieved, and the length of time such an index must be maintained, for Tb to be eliminated from possum populations and adjacent livestock. METHODS: Between 1997-1998 and 2000-2001, trap-catch surveys of possum populations naturally infected with Tb and subjected to population-control measures were undertaken at four forest sites and two farmland sites. At the same time, possum carcasses were collected at these sites and their Tb status determined, and all contiguous cattle and deer herds were Tb tested and abattoir slaughter data for these herds were interrogated. RESULTS: Trap-catch surveys indicated that numbers of possums on the farmland sites surveyed were usually very low and well below the control targets set (i.e. a 5% trap catch or approximately 0.5-1 possum/ha) for the study. In contrast, trap-catch surveys undertaken in forest sites indicated possum numbers were more variable, and often recovered rapidly from control operations to exceed control targets within 1-3 years. The annual rate of recovery of possum populations in half of the forest population surveys undertaken exceeded published intrinsic rates of increase for possums. The overall prevalence of Tb in possum populations was < or =1.9% at 5/6 sites, and was 6.5% at the sixth site. Juvenile possums infected with Tb were trapped within but near the edge of control zones and appeared to represent an immigrant source of infection. Mature infected possums survived control operations apparently by having home ranges in uncontrolled patches within control areas. Infection in possums appeared to be eliminated from one study site by the intensive control undertaken, but elimination at other sites appeared less likely. Levels of Tb in livestock on or adjacent to the study sites fell by at least 50% during the study, and cattle in one area tested clear for the first time in 20 years. CONCLUSIONS: Initial control of possums in forest appeared to achieve national control targets set by the Animal Health Board (AHB), despite trap-catch data often providing misleading population estimates. Such targets were often exceeded within 1-3 years. By comparison, possum control on farmland appeared to maintain populations at very low levels, while control on forest margins maintained populations at intermediate levels. Control was least effective in deep forest where human access was most difficult. Intensive population control measures appeared to have led to a reduced incidence of Tb in livestock at 3/4 sites, and elimination of Tb in livestock at one site. This result supports modelling studies that predict the eradication of Tb from possums through ongoing intensive control and may explain the lower success achieved with earlier less-intensive possum control.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine the clinical and pathological features of a neurological disease syndrome in a free-living possum population in New Zealand and to compare this syndrome with wobbly possum disease. METHODS: An outbreak of a neurological disease in possums in the Rotorua district was investigated in 1994. A variety of tissues was collected and investigated microbiologically and histopathologically. Tissues stored from clinically affected possums were homogenised, clarified and inoculated into healthy possums by the intra-peritoneal route. The clinical signs and histopathological lesions in naturally-infected and in experimentally-inoculated possums were assessed and compared with those of possums affected with wobbly possum disease. RESULTS: Histopathological investigation of three of the naturally-affected possums revealed non-suppurative encephalitis with perivascular cuffing, diffuse non-suppurative meningitis and focal non-suppurative myocarditis. These lesions were suggestive of a viral infection. No pathogenic bacteria were recovered and no viruses were isolated in tissue culture. A neurological disease, indistinguishable from wobbly possum disease, was reproduced in five out of the eight experimentally inoculated possums. In two experimental cases the clinical signs were very mild and, in most cases of the natural and experimental disease, histopathological lesions in the central nervous system were mild in comparison with wobbly possum disease. Possums which did not develop clinical signs of neurological disease or have lesions in the central nervous system did have infiltrations of mononuclear inflammatory cells in the liver and kidney. CONCLUSIONS: This neurological disease, reported for the first time in a free-living population, closely resembles and may be the same as wobbly possum disease. The milder nature of this disease could suggest there may be more than one strain of the aetiological agent.  相似文献

Abstract

AIM: To determine, for a variety of environmental conditions, how long Mycobacterium bovis might remain viable inside the carcass of a brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) that died of bovine tuberculosis (Tb), and to measure the rate of contact between free-ranging possums and possum carcasses.

METHODS: Lesions of M. bovis were simulated by inoculating excised spleens weighing 0.5–1 g with 0.2 mL liquid culture containing approximately 5 x 107 cfu M. bovis/mL. Simulated lesions were inserted into possum carcasses (n=48) at the peripheral lymph nodes. Carcasses were placed in the field at two sites (a tussock grassland and a podocarp-broadleaved forest site) and in two seasons (summer and winter) for up to 62 days. Survival rates of M. bovis were estimated by sampling the simulated lesions over time, and culturing the recovered lesion to determine if any viable M. bovis bacteria were present.

The time taken for a free-ranging possum to first encounter a dead possum in its home range was estimated by live-trapping possums and fitting them with proximity loggers (n=13). A ‘contact’ was recorded if these possums came within 40–50 cm of proximity loggers fitted to possum carcasses.

RESULTS: There were strong seasonal and site effects in the survival rate of M. bovis in possum carcasses. In the grassland habitat, no viable bacilli were cultured from any carcass after 3 days in summer, whereas in winter all samples were culture-positive for the first 20 days, and some were still positive after 27 days. The survival rates for forest habitat were intermediate between the results for grassland, and there were no culture-positive carcasses after 9 days in summer or 27 days in winter.

In summer, infected carcasses (n=6) were first encountered by possums a mean 1.9 (range 0.4–6.7) days after placement.

CONCLUSIONS: Possum carcasses were contacted by free-ranging possums within the period that viable M. bovis were shown to survive in a carcass. The risk of such infection is likely to be most significant in winter or in areas with microhabitats where the survival of M. bovis is high. However, the generally low survival rate of M. bovis in possum carcasses and the low frequency of possum-to-carcass contacts indicate this route of transmission alone could not maintain Tb in a possum population.  相似文献

The organisation of animal populations in social groupings may play a crucial role in the transmission of any infectious disease that requires close contact. The objective of this study was to quantify the contact structure of part of the Heck cattle population in a Dutch nature reserve and its hypothetical effect on the transmission of bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV1). The contact structure was quantified by observing the number of different animals with whom contact was made (i.e. the number of contactees) within a fixed time period. Two types of behaviour sampling methods, namely focal sampling and scan sampling were used to observe the contact structure. In this study only those contacts between individuals were observed that were assumed to be a proxy measure of an at-risk event for BHV1-infection. Two reproduction ratios (R), i.e. the average number of new cases caused by a typical infected individual, were estimated, one for the observed contact structure and another for a random mixing contact structure. The two reproduction ratios were then compared to study the hypothetical effect on BHV1 transmission.

The overall number of contactees was highest during summer and lowest during winter-spring. The contact structure of the homogeneous population did differ significantly from a random mixing contact structure, resulting in that the variation in the number of contactees was higher than under random mixing. Bulls, young bulls and cows had the highest number of contactees during, respectively, summer, autumn and winter-spring. From the analysis of the contingency tables it was clear that contacts between animal types did not occur at random during summer and autumn. For example, during summer more contacts than expected occurred between bulls and cows. This heterogeneity at animal type level was taken into account in the calculation for R, which resulted for the observed contact structure in higher estimates for R than for the homogeneous population.

When looking at heterogeneity at individual level it was found that during summer almost all individuals were observed together direct or indirect in the same group except for certain bull groups. During autumn and winter-spring almost all individuals were seen together in the same group when considering a long contact period of 14 days but the groups were fallen apart in smaller groups and solitary individuals for a short contact period of 5 days.

It could be concluded that based on the observed contact structure transmission would be favoured most during summer.  相似文献

AIMS: To examine the effect of reducing the abundance of brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) on the distribution and prevalence of bovine tuberculosis (Mycobacterium bovis, Tb) in possums and the incidence of Tb in domestic cattle on a group of farms in the central North Island, New Zealand. METHODS: The cumulative yearly incidence of Tb infection from 12 cattle herds was estimated from annual tuberculin testing and abattoir inspection data over the period 1983-98. Intensive control of possum populations began for six of the herds in 1988, five herds in 1994 and the remaining herd in 1996. The prevalence and distribution of macroscopic M. bovis infection in possums and an index of possum abundance was estimated during yearly cross-sectional surveys from 1988 to 1998. This enabled formal testing of the link between the abundance of tuberculous possums and the incidence of Tb in cattle. RESULTS: Before possum control, infected possums were clustered in foci on or adjacent to the farms with the highest annual incidence of tuberculosis in cattle, and had an overall prevalence of macroscopic M. bovis infection of 2.3%. The prevalence of disease declined to zero with ongoing possum control, although infected possums continued to be found during the first 5 years of control. Maintaining the possum population at an average of 22.1% of its pre-control density significantly reduced the odds of the cumulative yearly incidence of Tb in cattle by 77% during the first 5 years of possum control and a further 65% in the second 5-year period. Nine of 11 tuberculous possums identified since the start of possum control were found within the areas where infected possums were clustered during the pre-control survey, suggesting that the persistence of infection within these clusters rather than infected immigrants was the source of ongoing disease. Annual estimates of the prevalence of tuberculous possums broadly followed the predictions of Barlow's possum-Tb model for a controlled possum population. CONCLUSION: The results support the hypothesis that tuberculous possums transmit bovine tuberculosis to domestic cattle, and therefore that reducing the abundance of tuberculous possums reduces the incidence of Tb in cattle. If the level of possum culling is sufficient, it appears that M. bovis infection may be eradicated from possum populations. Better information on population density, rate of increase and annual culling rates would have been needed for a truly independent examination of the Barlow possum-Tb model.  相似文献

Analyses of recent classical swine fever (CSF) epidemics in the European Union have shown that silent circulation of CSF virus (CSFV) occurs before the first outbreak is detected and this may lead to a large epidemic. However, severity of CSF disease signs may be linked with efficacy of disease transmission, the most severely affected animals having a higher infectivity than the less affected ones. The purpose of this study was to combine disease transmission quantification methods with CSF clinical signs quantification tools to investigate whether clinical signs, considered as infectivity markers, may allow us to calculate reliable estimates for disease transmission parameters. Data from three transmission experiments were used, varying according to the viral strain (Eystrup or Paderborn) and to the contact structure between experimentally inoculated and contact animals (direct or indirect contact). Within- and between-pen basic reproduction ratios (R0) were compared using viraemia data or clinical data. Between-pen R0 estimates were close and not significantly >1, with either strain or computation mode (using viraemia or clinical data). Conversely, within-pen R0s (Paderborn strain) computed using clinical data appeared higher than the estimates obtained using viraemia data. A models comparison (Bayes information criterion) showed a better fit of the clinical-based models, for both strains. This suggests that, in affected herds, the most severely affected animals could play a prominent role in CSFV transmission.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to evaluate the response of cattle and deer to ferrets which were sedated so they behaved like terminally tuberculous animals, and to compare this with the response of cattle, deer and sheep to sedated possums. Six groups of deer and two groups of cattle were exposed to a sedated ferret and to a sedated possum. Both livestock species showed interest in the possum by sniffing and licking it, but they only briefly touched the ferret and no licking or extended investigation was observed. The proportion of available time spent in physical contact with the possum by cattle was 7.7 times as high as for the ferret, and for the deer was 5.7 times as high. The behavioural response of three groups of sheep to a sedated possum was investigated, and sheep showed limited interest beyond viewing the possum from a distance. The amount of time spent by sheep investigating the possum was very low and the intensity of exploration was also low. For possums, at least one deer was within 1.5 m (an estimate of the distance that tuberculosis can be transmitted by aerosol) for 50.9% of observation time, and in physical contact with the possum for 9.5% of time. The figures for cattle were 69.3% and 17.3%, while those for sheep were 6.9% and 0.3%. In interactions with ferrets, the equivalent figures were 29.8% within 1.5 m and 2.2% in physical contact for cattle, and 20.8% and 1.1% for deer. Tuberculous possums commonly and tuberculous ferrets less commonly have lung lesions and/or discharging sinuses, and may excrete Mycobacterium bovis intermittently or continuously in aerosols or discharges. The exploratory behaviour of deer and cattle in this study would provide opportunities for them to become infected with M. bovis if they had contact with infectious possums, and less probably with ferrets. The response of sheep to possums suggests that they would be much less likely to contract the disease.  相似文献

Weaning weights from nine parental breeds and three composites were analyzed to estimate variance due to grandmaternal genetic effects and to compare estimates for variance due to maternal genetic effects from two different models. Number of observations ranged from 794 to 3,465 per population. Number of animals in the pedigree file ranged from 1,244 to 4,326 per population. Two single-trait animal models were used to obtain estimates of covariance components by REML using an average information method. Model 1 included random direct and maternal genetic, permanent maternal environmental, and residual environmental effects as well as fixed sex x year and age of dam effects. Model 2 in addition included random grandmaternal genetic and permanent grandmaternal environmental effects to account for maternal effects of a cow on her daughter's maternal ability. Non-zero estimates of proportion of variance due to grandmaternal effects were obtained for 7 of the 12 populations and ranged from .03 to .06. Direct heritability estimates in these populations were similar with both models. Existence of variance due to grandmaternal effects did not affect the estimates of maternal heritability (m2) or the correlation between direct and maternal genetic effects (r(am)) for Angus and Gelbvieh. For the other five populations, magnitude of estimates increased for both m2 and r(am) when estimates of variance due to grandmaternal effects were not zero. Estimates of the correlation between maternal and grandmaternal genetic effects were large and negative. These results suggest that grand-maternal effects exist in some populations, that when such effects are ignored in analyses maternal heritability may be underestimated, and that the correlation between direct and maternal genetic effects may be biased downward if grandmaternal effects are not included in the model for weaning weight of beef cattle.  相似文献

Bovine and possum macrophages were infected in vitro with a virulent strain of Mycobacterium bovis, and mycobacterial replication was measured in the infected macrophages cultured under a variety of conditions. Virulent M. bovis replicated substantially in alveolar possum macrophages as well as in bovine blood monocyte-derived macrophages. Addition of recombinant bovine interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) with low concentrations of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) rendered bovine macrophages significantly more resistant to M. bovis replication. Disruption of iron levels in infected macrophages by addition of apotransferrin or bovine lactoferrin blocked replication of M. bovis in both bovine and possum macrophages. On the other hand, addition of exogenous iron, either in the form of iron citrate or iron-saturated transferrin, rendered macrophages of both species much more permissive for the replication of M. bovis. The impact of iron deprivation/loading on the mycobacteriostatic activity of cells was independent of nitric-oxide release, as well as independent of the generation of oxygen radical species in both possum and bovine macrophages. Exogenous iron was shown to reverse the ability of IFN-gamma/LPS pulsed bovine macrophages to restrict M. bovis replication. When autologous possum lymphocytes from animals vaccinated with M. bovis strain BCG were added to infected macrophages, they rendered the macrophages less permissive for virulent M. bovis replication. Loading the cells with iron prior to this macrophage-lymphocyte interaction, reversed this immune effect induced by sensitized cells. We conclude that, in two important animal species, intracellular iron level plays an important role in M. bovis replication in macrophages, irrespective of their activation status.  相似文献

Regression analysis was used to determine the ability of a number of biological parameters to predict economic efficiency. Detailed feed, financial, and production records were maintained by a random sample of eighteen Prince Edward Island (PEI) swine producers (each producing over 1000 market hogs per year). Relative economic efficiency of the operations was measured using return to management and labor (RML). Of the routinely monitored biological parameters, RML on PEI farrow-finish operations was best predicted (R2 = 64.8%) by: marketed per square meter per year (p = 0.008) and marketed per sow per year (p = 0.096). Regression of fixed costs revealed that biological parameters had limited ability to predict fixed costs per hog on farrow-finish operations (R2 = 30.7%). The only parameter contributing to the prediction of the fixed cost component of RML was feeder hog density (p = 0.077). The variable cost component of RML on farrow-finish operations was predicted (R2 = 94.3%) by feed cost per kg gain (p = 0.000), and marketed per sow per year (p = 0.044). The routinely recorded biological parameters on feeder farms had only limited ability to predict RML in this study (R2 = 43.7%). The only parameter of any importance was marketed per square meter per year (p = 0.106). Prediction of the fixed cost component of RML on feeder farms (R2 = 67.4%) was best realized by measuring feeder hog density (p = 0.045). The variable cost component of RML on feeder farms was reasonably well predicted (R2 = 74.7%) by feed cost per kg gain (p = 0.012). Although this parameter is difficult to monitor from records currently maintained on most farms, it points out the need to monitor feed consumption on swine farms.  相似文献

Two types of transmission experiments were performed to estimate the basic reproduction ratio R(0), indicating the level of encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) transmission among pigs. In a first experimental set-up with nine separate pairs, one randomly chosen piglet per pair was inoculated with a Belgian (myocardial) EMCV strain (B279/95, 10(3)TCID(50)/ml oronasally) and placed back into the pen. In the second experiment with two separate groups of five piglets, two piglets in each group were inoculated at the start. During the experiments, viraemia in blood and excretions was measured as well as the serological response against EMCV antigen. After death or euthanasia, the piglets were checked for heart lesions and virus isolation was done on various tissues. In both the experiments, the majority of the inoculated piglets either died with typical heart lesions (five out of nine and three out of four resp.), or produced high levels of neutralising antibody. EMC virus was isolated from the hearts of all piglets that died during either one of the experiments. The pairwise experiment revealed a point estimate for R(0) of 2.0 (95% confidence interval (CI)=0.37-10.74), while the group experiment resulted in a R(0)-value of 0.71 (95% CI=0.08-4.93). Combining the information from both experiments results in an estimate for R(0) of 1.24 (95% CI=0.39-4.35). Since R(0) has values around the threshold value of 1, the spread of EMCV due to contacts between pigs will in most cases be limited, but due to chance processes may lead to large outbreaks as well.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine temporal and spatial patterns of bovine tuberculosis (Tb) in a population of brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) free from commercial and recreational hunting and living contiguously with livestock, and to relate these patterns to measures of possum health and density. METHODS: Possums were trapped on 11 lines located on a forest-rough grazing margin in the Ahaura Valley in Westland in 1979-80 and each August from 1992 to 1996, and were examined post mortem for gross lesions indicative of Tb. Infection levels in possums were compared with Th test data from cattle grazing in the same area. RESULTS: Tuberculosis was identified from the trapped sample of possums in 1980. Trapping of further possums on the same trap lines confirmed the presence of the disease each year from 1992 to 1996, and suggested a clustering of infection in time and space. The prevalence of Tb in possums declined with increasing possum population size and well being, and decreasing age. The prevalence of Tb in possums was highest in 1980 and 1992, and appeared to roughly coincide with similar upsurges in Tb in nearby cattle. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the exceptional levels of Tb recorded in possums in 1992 had a direct effect on possum numbers, and gave rise to very low trap catches in 1993-94. They also suggest that Tb can persist for several years in possum populations existing well below the 5% trap catch targeted by regional councils for Tb possum control.  相似文献

Background

In Ireland, every animal is examined at slaughter for its fitness for human consumption. The aim of this study was to determine the relative effectiveness of factories in submitting and subsequently in having suspect lesions confirmed as bovine tuberculosis (TB) lesions during the years 2005-2007. This work provides an update from previously published data for years 2003-2004. During 2005-2007 data were available on 4,401,813 cattle from attested herds (i.e. herds classified free of bovine TB), from which data for potential confounding factors were available for 3,344,057 slaughtered animals at one of the 37 export-licensed factories.

Findings

From these animals, 8,178 suspect lesions were submitted for laboratory confirmation. Lesions from 5,456 (66.7%) animals tested as positive, and 269 (3.2%) were inconclusive for bovine TB. Logistic regression was used to determine adjusted submission and confirmation risks for each factory while controlling for confounding factors. Factory rankings based on adjusted and crude risks were similar. The average crude submission risk for all the factories was 25 lesions per 10,000 animals slaughtered, ranging from 0 to 52. The crude confirmation risk varied between 30.3% and 91.3%.

Conclusions

Substantial variation in the effectiveness of lesion submission and subsequent confirmation as bovine TB was found among the 37 factories. Compared to previous years (2003-2004), there was an increased bovine TB lesion submission and confirmation risk. Continued monitoring of the effectiveness of slaughter surveillance in Ireland is recommended; emphasis should be placed on efforts to improve bovine TB surveillance in factories with lower rankings.  相似文献
