A 6-year-old gelding was referred with a 3-month history of recurrent fever, inappetance, lethargy and weight loss. On clinical examination major findings were depression, thin condition, thrombophlebitis, nodules on the scrotal skin, leukocytosis, hyperfibrinogenaemia and hyperglobulinaemia. Pleural fluid and areas of lung consolidation were seen on ultrasonographic examination of the thorax. A diagnosis of chronic respiratory disease was made. Initially there was a response to antibiotic therapy but the horse was presented 3 months later with continued weight loss, recurrent fever and multifocal skin lesions, characterised by scales, crusts and nodules, affecting the nasal bridge, jugular grooves, ventral neck, withers, scrotum, prepuce, and medial gaskins. Histological evaluation of skin biopsies indicated a granulomatous reaction. On ultrasonographic examination of the thorax multiple hypoechoic lesions consistent with granulomas were seen in both lungs. A diagnosis of generalised granulomatous disease was made. The horse was euthanased at the owner's request. On necropsy examination the main findings were multiple nodules of fibrotic granulomatous inflammation in the lung, heart, liver, gastrointestinal tract and mesenteric lymph nodes, supporting the diagnosis of generalised granulomatous disease.  相似文献

Summary The study reported in the present paper discusses the clinical and histological picture of bovine demodecosis and the morphology of Demodex mites as seen in four cows suffering from generalized demodecosis. There were no clinical signs of other skin affections. Changes in both the number and the appearance of visible skin lesions were seen and related to the level of nutrition and the exposure to sunshine of the cattle. Histological sections of some skin nodules showed the presence of mite colonies in the hair follicles. Only adults were seen in the sebaceous glands. Microscopical study of the morphology of the mites revealed the presence of two types of demodicids in the skin lesions and three types from epilated eyelashes. Morphological criteria are presented to aid in identification of species and of life stages.  相似文献

A skin eruption developed in five calves with advanced experimental East Coast fever (ECF) (Theileria parva infection). In three cases the eruption was due to intradermal nodules containing numerous theilerial schizonts, in one animal the nodules contained abscesses filled with Demodex mites, and in the fifth calf both types of nodules were present. No nodules were seen in 15 other experimental cases of ECF, which generally died or were killed in an earlier stage of the disease. It is postulated that demodicosis may become apparent in healthy carriers of the mite in the course of ECF, because of immuno-depression caused by the latter disease.  相似文献

This study was carried out to investigate fifteen cases of acute lethal infection of calves (≤ 4 months of age) by the protozoan parasite Theileria (T.) annulata in the south of Portugal. Calves developed multifocal to coalescent nodular skin lesions, similar to multicentric malignant lymphoma. Infestation with ticks (genus Hyalomma) was intense. Theileria was seen in blood and lymph node smears, and T. annulata infection was confirmed by isolation of schizont-transformed cells and sequencing of hypervariable region 4 of the 18S rRNA gene. At necropsy, hemorrhagic nodules or nodules with a hemorrhagic halo were seen, particularly in the skin, subcutaneous tissue, skeletal and cardiac muscles, pharynx, trachea and intestinal serosa. Histologically, nodules were formed by large, round, lymphoblastoid neoplastic-like cells. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) identified these cells as mostly CD3 positive T lymphocytes and MAC387 positive macrophages. A marker for B lymphocytes (CD79αcy) labeled very few cells. T. annulata infected cells in these nodules were also identified by IHC through the use of two monoclonal antibodies (1C7 and 1C12) which are diagnostic for the parasite. It was concluded that the pathological changes observed in the different organs and tissues were caused by proliferation of schizont-infected macrophages, which subsequently stimulate a severe uncontrolled proliferation of uninfected T lymphocytes.  相似文献

Adrenal cortical epithelial tumours are common in ferrets. A variant tumour type with prominent spindle cell proliferation has been identified. We characterized these variant tumours with light microscopy and immunohistochemical analysis and correlate these features to clinical parameters and prognosis. We classified 24 ferret adrenal cortical masses with recognizable spindle cell proliferation obtained from the AMC and AFIP databases, based on percentage of spindle cells present and features of malignancy. These masses were separated into hyperplastic nodules and adenomas (both with 1–24% spindle cells), ‘mixed’ adenomas (≥25% spindle cells), adenocarcinomas (1–24%) and ‘mixed’ adenocarcinomas (≥25% spindle cells). Tumours were evaluated immunohistochemically for smooth muscle actin (SMA) and estrogen receptor (ER) expression. Disease‐free interval (DFI) and survival time (ST) were calculated using Kaplan–Meier product limit method. Of 24 cases of spindle cell variant adrenal tumours, one was a hyperplastic nodule, 10 were adenomas, three were ‘mixed’ adenomas, six were adenocarcinomas and four were ‘mixed’ adenocarcinomas. The proliferative spindle cell cytoplasm was SMA‐positive (smooth muscle myocyte origin). ER positivity, seen in nine of 24 cases, was restricted to adenocarcinomas, ‘mixed’ adenomas and ‘mixed’ adenocarcinomas. DFI and ST were significantly reduced in ‘mixed’ adenocarcinomas or tumours with ER expression. DFI was significantly reduced in tumours with marked smooth muscle. The spindle cell component of these variant adrenal tumours is smooth muscle in origin. The presence of abundant smooth muscle, a more malignant histologic grade (‘mixed’ adenocarcinomas) and ER expression are significantly positively correlated to both decreased DFI and decreased ST.  相似文献

Six cases of ocular lymphocystis, a virus disease, are described. Lymphocystis is generally known as a benigh, unique, giant cell disease of fishes causing nodules on the skin and fins. It has been studied extensively because of the virus-host cell relationship that results in extreme size and lack of quick cellular destruction or stimulation to neoplasia. Lymphocystis cells were found behind or in one or both eyes and were also found on the cornea or adjacent skin surfaces. A retrobulbar mass produced extreme exophthalmos. Uveal (choroid and iris) masses were present in most cases. Optic nerve involvement was also seen. It is probable that the virus reached the eye by the blood with the resulting masses forming in situ rather than by direct extension from skin lesions.  相似文献

A 16-month-old German short-haired pointer was examined because of the development of multiple nodules (0.5-3 cm diameter) in the skin of the head, back, sternum and limbs. The nodules were first noticed when the dog was 8 weeks of age. At no time did the animal show clinical signs of a systemic disease. Histology and electron microscopy revealed that the nodules were composed of irregular bundles of dense collagen fibres and the constituent fibrils had a distribution of diameters similar to that expected in normal skin. Immunofluorescence tests for immunoglobulin (IgG) and complement (C3) showed no deposits of these in the skin and the serum antinuclear antibody test was negative. It was concluded that the nodules were collagenous naevi.  相似文献

A 9-year-old female, domestic short hair cat was presented with sudden onset of polyuria/polydipsia, and hundreds of cutaneous nodules. Prior to referral, the cat had had four skin nodules that were treated with steroids. The four skin nodules then multiplied to form more than 100 ulcerated and nonulcerated nodules located all over the trunk. Clinical evaluation revealed hypothermia and respiratory distress. Cytology from both skin nodules and bronchoalveolar lavage showed macrophages and small organisms whose shape and size were indicative of Toxoplasma spp., or similar organisms. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) serology results were negative. The cat was seropositive for Toxoplasma (IgG 1 : 640) and Neospora (1 : 80) infections. The cat died soon after referral. Necropsy revealed pyothorax, necrotic/purulent pneumonia, haemorrhagic spots on kidneys and mesentery. Histopathology from skin nodules showed diffuse, deep necrotic dermatitis/panniculitis, vasculitis and disseminated free and grouped protozoa. The parasites were found in lungs, spleen, kidneys and liver. Immunohistochemistry on skin tissue with anti-Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum antibodies gave positive results with both. Electron microscopy showed single and grouped tachyzoites with morphological features of T. gondii, often within macrophages. Samples of cutaneous nodules and bronchoalveolar fluid were examined by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for detecting apicomplexa coccidia. PCR results were consistent only with T. gondii infection. Therefore, immunohistochemistry positivity for N. caninum was considered a cross-reaction and a diagnosis of cutaneous and visceral toxoplasmosis was made.  相似文献

A total of 192 male camels of three age groups (young, adult and old) from Saudi Arabia were examined for Onchocerca fasciata infection by detection of microfilariae in skin snips and nodules in the nuchal ligaments and subcutaneous tissues of the neck and shoulder. The overall prevalence rates were 10.9 and 33.3%, respectively. The prevalence rate by the skin snip technique and the number of microfilariae per gram of skin were higher in young and adult camels than in old camels. However, the prevalence rate by the detection of nodules and the number of nodules per infected camel, increased with increase in age of the camels. An increase in size and weight of nodules was reported with an increase in age of the camels. Nodules varied in diameter from 2 to 36 mm and in weight from 0.5 to 5.0 g. The overall percentage of soft viable and calcified nodules was 42.5 and 57.5%, respectively. The viability of worms decreased, but calcification increased with increased age of the camels. Four levels of degeneration and calcification of worms were described following scanning electron microscopy.  相似文献

This report describes the findings in a four-year-old Toggenburg goat with demodicosis. The skin had multifocal nodules, which were approximately 5 mm in diameter and contained thick yellow exsudate. Microscopic examination of the exsudate revealed numerous Demodex caprae. The goat was clipped and treated topically every five to seven days for a total of 12 treatments with a 1:100 dilution of amitraz (Ectodex, Hoechst Roussel Vet). The treatment resulted in a marked decrease in the number of skin nodules. However, new nodules appeared after treatment was discontinued and complete clinical cure was not achieved.  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 7-year-old Persian cat was evaluated for recurrence of multiple cystic periocular masses. A number of cyst-like lesions had been resected from the left eyelids 18 months earlier, with lesions recurring within 6 months after surgery. The cat had blepharospasm and signs of discomfort following rupture of the largest cyst the day prior to examination. Previous histologic examination of the cysts had revealed apocrine hidrocystomas. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Multiple pigmented nodules were seen around the skin of the upper and lower left eyelids. The nodules were brownish to black, round, soft, and fluid-filled. Signs of pain were not evident during palpation of the nodules. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: The largest cyst on the upper eyelid was removed by means of a V-shaped full-thickness excision. Histologic and immunohistochemical examination of the excised tissue confirmed the diagnosis of apocrine hidrocystoma. The remaining periocular cysts were surgically debrided and then treated topically with 20% trichloroacetic acid. All lesions healed rapidly without any signs of discomfort. During a recheck examination 12 months later, the upper and lower left eyelids appeared morphologically normal, and there was no evidence of recurrence. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Findings suggested that chemical ablation with trichloroacetic acid may be a useful treatment for apocrine hidrocystomas in cats.  相似文献

A distinctive nodular dermatitis induced by Straelensia cynotis, a newly described trombidioid larval mite which resides in hair follicles, was identified in 12 dogs living in France. They all had scattered, small (1 to 3 mm in diameter), pale, firm skin nodules, variable in distribution but always affecting the dorsal regions of the head and trunk; they were distributed over the whole body of seven of the dogs. The animals were otherwise healthy except for three severely infested fox terriers which had a decreased appetite, were lethargic, and whose skin nodules were painful to the touch. The nodules did not induce pruritus. The lesions usually began as erythematous papules which developed into firm pale nodules. The dermatitis resolved within two to 12 months. Topical acaricides were ineffective but the skin nodules regressed after treatments with systemic avermectins. Histologically, each nodule was composed of a dilated follicular ostium containing a well-preserved larval mite, and showed a pseudoepitheliomatous follicular hyperplasia and an abundant perifollicular mucinosis. The larvae were identified as belonging to the genus Straelensia (Acari: Leeuwenhoekiidae). It was clearly established that the three fox terriers had become infested within a fox's den. The nymphs and adults of this species of mite are believed to live in foxes' dens; foxes are considered to be the natural host for the larval stage, and dogs a permissive but occasional host.  相似文献

An 8-month-old white feathered, black skinned Moroseta hen was presented for examination because of numerous 2 mm- to 30 mm-diameter irregularly shaped, hard nodules in the skin of the head, wings, back, and abdomen. The nodules were confined to the skin and did not involve subcutaneous tissues. Nodules consisted of dilated feather follicles packed with a caseous tan-to-pale-yellow material admixed with feather remnants. Histologically, affected feather follicles were markedly dilated and filled with laminated keratin debris. Necrosis of the epidermis and perifollicular lymphocyte infiltration was also present. Bacteriologic investigation of internal organs was negative, while secondary bacteria, Proteus spp. and Bacillus spp., were isolated from skin nodules. A concomitant lice infestation of Menopon spp., as well as leg mange caused by Cnemidocoptes spp., were also present. These bacterial isolates and parasites were not related to the disease condition. The condition observed was differentiated from benign feather follicle tumors, and a diagnosis of multiple feather follicle cysts was made. In addition, a breed predisposition was hypothesized.  相似文献

Twelve carp (Cyprinus carpio) out of a total of 100 were affected with skin nodules, mainly located on the dorsal and lateral surface. Post mortem examination of six of the worst affected fish showed the nodules consisting of white gel-like outgrowths. No abnormality was apparent in any other tissue examined. Microscopically, the nodules were formed by proliferating hyperplastic epidermal cells. The other six fish were left for recovery and their nodules regressed spontaneously. The possible aetiological factors are listed.  相似文献

The clinical signs of infection in dogs with Neospora caninum are usually associated with neurological disorders and are seen in young dogs. In this brief case report we observed multifocal ulcerative and exudative skin nodules on the neck and pelvic limbs of a 10‐year‐old cocker spaniel dog. Infection with N. caninum was diagnosed on the basis of cytology and examination of skin tissues by PCR. The dog initially responded to treatment with clindamycin and then relapsed; the dog died. Infection with N. caninum may have been due in part to immune suppression due to hyperadrenocorticism; which either allowed for the development of a primary infection or reactivation of a latent infection by N. caninum with the occurrence of skin lesions.  相似文献

A disseminated Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium infection was diagnosed in a pet Korean squirrel. Grossly, multiple small nodules in the lung, liver, spleen, and skin were observed. Adrenal glands were very enlarged. The only tissue exhibiting necrosis and calcification was a very enlarged bronchial lymph node. The remaining lymph nodes were slightly enlarged. Moderate ascites was also observed. Microscopically, a disseminated granulomatous inflammation with numerous lymphocytes was seen. Acid-fast bacilli were detected in macrophages, in giant cells, free in the interstitium, and in some lymphatic vessels, both within cells and free in the lumen. M. avium subsp. avium was isolated and identified by polymerase chain reaction-restriction endonuclease analysis.  相似文献

Multiple, dermal and subcutaneous nodules developed in a young female Manchester Terrier dog that had a chronic history of superficial dermatophytosis. Skin biopsy specimens of the nodules revealed granulomatous inflammation in the deep dermis and subcutis with branching fungal organisms. Cultures of multiple biopsy specimens from the nodules all yielded Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The lesions in this dog were similar to granulomatous dermatophytosis, a skin disease that has been reported in Persian cats and one Yorkshire Terrier dog.  相似文献

An extraskeletal osteosarcoma of the liver is reported in a 14-year-old male Fox Terrier. Ante- and post-mortem radiographs showed calcified nodules in the liver and non-involvement of the skeletal system. The liver was diffusely involved with greyish, mostly mineralized nodules, and metastatic lesions were seen in the diaphragm, omentum, mesentery, and the sternal lymph nodes. Besides the osteosarcoma, a melanoma with metastasis to the regional lymph node was seen in the left hock region.  相似文献

In a retrospective histopathologic study of nonneoplastic dermatoses, lymphoid nodules were found in 0.3% of 3,408 canine, 5.1% of 469 feline, and 4.5% of 325 equine skin biopsies. In all 3 species, the majority of cases wherein lymphoid nodules were found were diseases of presumed immune-mediated nature. In cats and horses, the majority of cases were also diseases characterized by tissue eosinophilia.  相似文献
