Six heifers (1/4 Brahman X 1/4 Jersey X 1/2 Angus, 290 kg average weight) with ruminal, duodenal and ileal cannulae given ad libitum access to corn silage with or without 100 mg monensin X head-1 were used to determine interrelationships among behavior, ruminal motility and intake. Voluntary intake was positively related (P less than .001) to eating time, duration of the main morning meal and daily mastication time. Intake was negatively related to unitary times [min X g dry matter-1 X (kg body weight X 75)-1] of eating (P less than .05), rumination (P less than .001), mastication (P less than .001), unitary number of rumination boli (P less than .001), and latency time between termination of morning meal and onset of rumination (P less than .05). Both daily and unitary eating and ruminating time were positively related (P less than .001) to daily and unitary mastication time and unitary number of strong cranio-dorsal ruminal contractions. Positive relationships (P less than .01) were found between mean duration of daily meals, main evening meal and unitary eating time, and between mean duration of rumination periods and unitary ruminating time. Daily and unitary number of rumination boli and mean duration of one bolus were positively related (P less than .01) to unitary ruminating time. Interrelationships between intake, eating and ruminating activities and associated cranio-dorsal ruminal motility were all influenced (P less than .01) by individual heifer, which indicates potential in identifying individuals with better than average mastication behavior and ruminal motility.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Six heifers (1/4 Brahman x 1/4 Jersey x 1/2 Angus, 290 kg avg wt) with ruminal, duodenal and ileal cannulas were given ad libitum access to a corn silage-based diet with or without 100 mg monensin.hd-1.d-1 in a two-period crossover design. There was no significant effect of monensin on voluntary intake (VI), flow of NDF to the abomasum, fecal output or the efficiency of transfer of NDF to the duodenum (unitary fluxes of NDF through the reticulo-omasal orifice, number.g NDF.(kg BW.75)-1). Monensin increased extent of NDF digestion (NDFD) in the dorsal (P = .07) and ventral (P = .09) ruminal sac. As a fraction of the total tract NDFD, NDFD increased progressively in dorsal rumen (.214), ventral rumen (.548) and duodenal (.818) sites. The VI among individual heifers was negatively related to unitary fluxes of NDF through the reticulo-omasal orifice (P = .001) and to the extent of digestion of potentially digestible NDF (PDNDFD) in the ventral rumen (P = .006) and duodenum (P = .032), but not in the dorsal rumen (P = .720) or in the total tract (P = .785). Fecal output of NDF was negatively related to unitary times of eating (P = .027), ruminating (P = .001), masticating (P = .001) and unitary number of rumination boli (P = .001). These relationships all were influenced (P = .001) by individual heifer.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Six nonpregnant Friesian heifers (516 kg avg BW) with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were used to examine intake of direct cut (DC) or wilted (W) grass silage in relation to chewing behavior, ruminal characteristics and site and extent of digestion. Dry matter content of the silages was 20.3% and 40.3%, and feed intake averaged 1.88% and 2.17% of BW (P less than .01), respectively. Mean ruminal osmolality was 291 mosm/liter for the DC and 318 mosm/liter for the W silage (P less than .05), with extreme values exceeding 350 mosm/liter for the W silage at 1 h to 2 h postfeeding. There was a shift from eating to ruminating on W silage associated with a longer duration of the average rumination bolus cycle (P less than .01). Duration of chewing time per kilogram of DM intake was 103.5 min and 91.7 min (P less than .05) for the DC and W silages, respectively. Fecal mean particle length was 2.2 times greater (P less than .01), accompanied by higher spread coefficients (P less than .001), for the W silage. No differences occurred between silages in ruminal digestibility of OM and NDF. In the total digestive tract, apparent digestibilities of OM and NDF were depressed after wilting grass prior to ensiling (P less than .01), but the proportion of digestible OM apparently digested in the rumen was .74 for both silages.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Voluntary intake, digestibility, N balance, and chewing behavior of six 6-mo-old (young) and six 30-mo-old (mature) Texel wethers (32.6 and 83.1 kg average BW) given ad libitum access to grass silage and 100 g of top-dressed soybean meal with or without 5 g of methionine hydroxy analog (MHA) in the acid form were examined according to a two-period crossover design. Supplementation level of MHA in the acid form corresponded to .32 and .16 g of MHA/kg BW.75, respectively, in young and mature wethers. There was no effect (P greater than .10) of MHA on mean voluntary DMI. Methionine hydroxy analog supplementation increased (P less than .02) digestibility of DM, OM, and CP by young wethers but not (P greater than .18) by mature wethers. The MHA decreased eating time (P less than .03) in both young and mature wethers and intake level (P = .01) in young wethers during the first 1.5 h of access to grass silage. With MHA, both age groups increased (P less than .05) the daily number of meals and decreased (P less than .02) the mean duration of each meal. There was no effect (P greater than .06) of MHA on daily and unitary eating, ruminating, and masticating times; however, mean duration of consecutive rumination bolus cycles was longer (7.2%; P = .01) in young wethers. Young vs mature sheep ate more (53.4 vs 39.3 g of DM/[d.kg BW.75]; P less than .001) and had shorter unitary mastication times (P = .001). Results suggest that, depending on its relative level of supplementation, MHA in the acid form could act through both palatability and effects on ruminal metabolism.  相似文献

Sixty-four Angus steers initially averaging 354 kg were allotted to a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to determine the effects of dietary Ni (0 or 5 mg/kg supplemental), monensin (0 or 33 mg/kg) and their possible interaction on performance, methane production and N metabolism. The basal diet was a high energy, corn-cottonseed hull based diet containing 10.2% crude protein and .30 mg/kg Ni on a dry matter basis. Monensin reduced (P less than .05) feed intake, did not affect average daily gain and improved (P less than .05) feed conversion over the 102-d study. Nickel supplementation did not significantly alter or interact with monensin to affect steer performance. However, steers fed Ni tended to have higher average daily gains and improved feed conversions. Monensin decreased (P less than .05) in vitro methane production, altered several carcass traits, increased (P less than .05) molar proportion of ruminal propionate and decreased (P less than .05) molar proportion of ruminal acetate. Nickel did not alter methane production, carcass characteristics or ruminal volatile fatty acid proportions. Both monensin and Ni increased (P less than .05) ruminal fluid urease activity when samples were obtained before feeding. A significant monensin X Ni interaction was found to affect ruminal epithelial urease activity. Monensin increased ruminal epithelial urease in steers not receiving supplemental Ni, but had no effect on ruminal epithelial urease activity in steers fed supplemental Ni. Ruminal fluid protein and ammonia-N were decreased (P less than .05) by monensin. Results of this study indicate that Ni may interact with monensin to affect ruminal epithelial urease activity but not performance or methane production in finishing steers.  相似文献

The nycterohemeral pattern of eating and ruminating behavior was examined in six heifers given ad libitum access to a corn silage-based diet with or without 100 mg monensin.hd-1.d-1 in a two-period crossover design. Rhythm components (no. of cycles/24 h) were characterized by the finite Fourier transform of 24-h mastication activities series measured over 7 d. Analysis of variance of the daily mean of hourly activities and rhythm components 1 to 12 showed significant effects of heifer (H), monensin treatment (T), period (P) and T x P x H interactions. A reparameterization of the finite Fourier transform yielded the amplitude and the phase for each rhythm component and allowed the plot of periodograms and phase diagrams, respectively. Rhythm components 1, 2 and 3 contributed primarily in explaining the total dispersion of 24-h eating and ruminating mastication series. The major effect of monensin was to increase the phase at rhythm component 1, delaying by 1 h in the onset of rumination after the morning feeding. Heifer effects were significant and appeared related to variations in daily voluntary intake (VI) of individual heifers. Heifer 5, with the largest VI, had two main eating periods and the highest rate of eating. Heifer 4, with the smallest VI, partitioned mastication activity throughout the day into four main eating and ruminating periods. Differences among animals in their nycterohemeral chewing behavior patterns may be related to differences in forestomach structure associated with a larger VI capacity by animals having mastication rhythm components 1 and 3.  相似文献

Effect of preservation method on intake and chewing behavior was examined using a first, late vegetative harvest (mid-June) of Kanlow switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.). For silage (S), forage was harvested with a commercial field chopper (1.5 to 4 cm average chop length) and ensiled directly in silos 1.2 m in diameter and 3.6 m in height. For hay (H), forage was harvested with a flail-chopper (7 to 15 cm average chop length) and cured as hay in a drier at 77 degrees C. Diets of H and S were fed to six Hereford steers (338+/-5 kg) in a single crossover experiment. Chewing behavior was monitored for 4 d with a computerized system. At feeding, H was higher in DM and contained greater concentrations (DM basis) of NDF, CP, and hemicellulose, but lower concentrations of ADF and cellulose, and had lower in vitro DM disappearance values. Steers fed S had higher intakes of DM (P < .02) and NDF (P < .04) and consumed less water from the water supply (P < .01) than animals fed H. However, total amount of water (from water supply and feed) consumed per kilogram of DMI did not differ between diets. Crude protein intake was similar between diets. Preservation method had no effect on eating time, number of boli ruminated, bolus duration, and number of rumination chews per bolus. Steers fed S made fewer eating chews (P < .10) and ruminated for a longer time (P < .05) while making a greater number of rumination chews (P < .04) than steers fed H. Rumination intercycle time was slightly shorter in steers fed H (P < .05) than in steers fed S. When expressed per kilogram of NDF intake, steers fed S spent less time eating (P < .03) and made fewer eating chews (P < .02) than steers fed H; however, rumination time, number of rumination chews, and number of boli ruminated were not affected by preservation method. Steers fed S ingested feed at a greater rate (P < .03), excreted smaller fecal particles (P < .03), had meals of shorter duration (P < .06), spent less time eating during main meals (meals following feed distribution: P < .05), had more rumination periods (P < .01), and a shorter morning (P < .06) latency time (interval between end of main meal and onset of rumination) than steers fed H. These results indicate that preservation method with its concomitant differences in chop length affected forage chemical composition and voluntary intake, and that differences in chewing behavior occurred mostly during eating.  相似文献

Four primiparous Holstein-Friesian cows (518 kg average BW) with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were used to examine voluntary intake of direct cut (DC) or wilted (W) grass silage in relation to ruminal characteristics and chewing behavior. Dry matter content of the silages was 17.0 and 38.1%, concentrate DM intake was restricted to 5.0 and 5.3 kg/d, and voluntary DM intake from silages averaged 7.4 and 9.5 kg/d (P = .008), respectively. The acetate/propionate ratio in ruminal fluid decreased from 4.0 on DC to 3.3 on W silage (P = .021). The protein content in milk increased from 26.3 to 27.5 g/liter (P = .042) and the protein yield from 469 to 574 g/d (P = .038). The distribution of concentrates (38% of DM intake) with a mean particle size of .04 cm reduced differences in fecal mean particle size between diets. There was a shift from eating to ruminating on W silage with regard to daily duration (min/d) and number of jaw movements (no./d). However, ruminating index (no./kg DM intake) remained unchanged, irrespective of wilting and chop length of the silages or physiological state of the animals. These results are interpreted to indicate that the time lag for functional density of feed particles in the reticulorumen to increase, as affected by ruminating activity, not rate of reduction of the particle size, limits voluntary intake of grass silage by cattle.  相似文献

Effects of time of day and dietary monensin in the distribution of size of digesta particles in different digestive tract sites and their intersite relationships were examined in six heifers (290 kg BW) with ruminal, duodenal and ileal cannulas given ad libitum access to corn silage, with or without 100 mg monensin.head-1.d-1, in a two-period crossover design. Ingestive masticate and digesta of corn silage were collected via esophageal, ruminal or intestinal cannulas. The distribution of particulate matter retained on sieves with apertures larger than 20 microm was determined by wet-sieving. The cumulative distribution of particulate matter on a series of sieves was regressed on retaining sieve aperture to estimate the sieve aperture that would retain 50% weight of the particulate matter (median retaining aperture, MRA). The MRA of masticate was 6,494 microm. The MRA of digesta particles decreased (P less than .05) from ventral rumen (1,847 microm) to dorsal rumen (1,797 microm) to duodenum (346 microm), but increased to the rectum (359 microm). The MRA was lower (P = .044) for the monensin treatment only in feces. The MRA of particulate matter in the dorsal and ventral rumen, duodenum and rectum all changed (P less than .05) over 24 h. An inverse pattern between the MRA of ruminal and duodenal digesta occurred, presumably the result of a nycterohemeral pattern of eating and ruminating activity. Across sampling times, an inverse relationship existed between MRA of ventral rumen and duodenal digesta. This relationship suggests that a ruminal digesta raft composed of larger particles (immediately following major meals) is more effective than a raft of smaller particles (prior to such meals) in preventing flux of large particles to the duodenum.  相似文献

Discriminant analysis was used to identify combinations of variables, characterizing patterns of jaw movement (JM) during eating and rumination, that minimize errors when classifying series of successive JM of known behaviour into rumination and eating. JM data from a non-lactating jersey cow were recorded continuously for 72 h. The cow was fed 1800 g of barley straw and 1375 g of dried sugarbeet pulp pellets twice daily. Average times spent eating and ruminating daily were 294 and 462 min. Successive rumination and eating JM were grouped into series when pauses between JM were equal to or longer than a fixed time interval corresponding to the minimum time interval between successive rumination cycles. Time intervals between successive JM, amplitude (the magnitude of the jaw's movement) and number of chews per series of successive JM were calculated for all rumination and eating series and included in the discriminant analyses. The combination of the four variables, basic chewing rate (BCR), mean of amplitude/standard deviation of amplitude, ln(number of chews) and standard deviation of time intervals between successive jaw movements, gave the least minutes of misclassified chewing behaviour per day (3% of total daily chewing time) and yielded a quadratic discriminant function. The order of the variables mentioned rank the variables according to their ability to classify the series. Combinations of the variables BCR and ln(number of chews), and other variables based on mean and standard deviation of time intervals between successive JM and amplitude of JM, can be used with advantage for classifying series of successive JM into rumination and eating behaviour.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to determine the effects of lysocellin and monensin on mineral metabolism of steers fed forage-based diets. In each study treatments consisted of 1) control, 2) 100 mg lysocellin/d, 3) 200 mg lysocellin/d and 4) 200 mg monensin/d. Twenty-four growing Hereford steers were used in each of two experiments to evaluate the effects of ionophore feeding on plasma and ruminal soluble mineral concentrations. Steers were fed individually greenchop (tall fescue and bermudagrass) ad libitum and .91 kg/d of a corn-trace mineral salt-ionophore supplement. Plasma and ruminal fluid samples were obtained on d 28 and 84 in both studies. Ruminal concentrations of soluble phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) were higher (P less than .05), whereas soluble manganese (Mn) was lower (P less than .01), in steers fed lysocellin than in controls. Steers fed lysocellin had higher (P less than .05) plasma magnesium (Mg) concentrations than control steers. Plasma and ruminal soluble mineral concentrations generally were similar for the monensin and 200 mg lysocellin treatments. Two additional studies were conducted to determine the effects of lysocellin and monensin on macromineral apparent absorption and retention in steers fed tall fescue greenchop. Steers were adjusted to their diets for 28 d and then placed in metabolism crates for a 6-d acclimation followed by a 5-d collection of urine and feces. Percent apparent absorption of calcium (Ca), potassium (K), Mg and P was higher (P less than .05), whereas sodium (Na) absorption was lower (P less than .05), in steers fed lysocellin than in controls. Mineral absorption was similar in steers fed 200 mg lysocellin or monensin. Calcium (P less than .05) and K (P less than .10) retention (percent of intake) was increased by ionophore feeding. Results indicate that lysocellin and monensin alter apparent absorption and retention of certain minerals in steers fed forage-based diets.  相似文献

The distribution of particles of differing sizes in ruminal, duodenal and fecal samples, the efficiency of particle breakdown and ruminal escape and their relationships to voluntary intake, chewing behavior and extent of digestion of potentially digestible NDF were examined in six heifers (290 kg average BW) with ruminal, duodenal and ileal cannulas. Animals had ad libitum access to corn silage, with or without 100 mg monensin head-1.d-1, in a two-period crossover design. Variations in voluntary intake by individual animals were positively related to size of digesta particles (median retaining aperture, MRA) in the dorsal rumen (P = .07) and rectum (P = .08), but not to MRA of particulate matter from the ventral rumen and duodenum. No significant relationships existed among eating or ruminating activities and distribution of particles of differing sizes in digesta from any of the digestive sites. The MRA of particulate matter in duodenal and rectal digesta were negatively related (P = .08 and P = .10) to extent of digestion of potentially digestible NDF (PDNDF) at these sites. Voluntary intake was related positively to efficiency of ruminative degradation of digesta particles appearing at the duodenum (P = .09) and to duodenal DM digesta flow per opening of the reticulo-omasal orifice (ROO; P = .02), the latter being negatively related to extent of digestion of PDNDF in duodenal digesta (P = .09). These results suggest that animals with higher intake capability are more efficient ruminators and can partially override constraining factors of particle size and byoyancy and thereby achieve a larger amount of DM flowing per opening of the ROO.  相似文献

Two series of trials were conducted to evaluate alternative methods of administering monensin to pasture cattle. In a series of five trials, monensin was incorporated into supplements at 440 mg/kg to provide an average intake of 200 mg X head-1 X d-1 for growing cattle on pasture. Comparisons were made between daily and alternate-day feeding of the supplements. A control treatment consisting of unmedicated supplement fed daily also was included. Monensin at 200 mg/d and 400 mg on alternate days increased gain by .077 (P less than .01) and .082 (P less than .01) kg/d above control-cattle gains (.54 kg daily). Nine pasture trials were conducted to compare the effectiveness of monensin in increasing the daily gain of growing cattle when hand-fed daily in a supplement or self-fed in supplements that contained salt to regulate supplement intake. Desired supplement intakes were approximately .454 kg X head-1 X d-1 in six trials, .68 kg/d in one trial and 1.81 kg/d in two trials. Monensin produced gain increases of .09 kg daily (P less than .01) with both feeding systems. The daily gains of cattle that were hand-fed and self-fed were equal (P greater than .10). Self-fed treatments containing monensin required fewer changes in salt level than self-fed treatments not containing monensin, and the salt levels required to limit intake were generally 25 to 50% lower when monensin was in the supplement.  相似文献

A 3.5 MHz linear transducer was used to assess the motility of the reticulum in 30 healthy, standing, non-sedated cows while they were at rest, eating, ruminating and under stress. The ultrasonographic examinations were made over periods of nine minutes and video recorded for analysis. The reticulum contracted in a biphasic pattern while the cows were resting, eating or stressed. The first contraction was incomplete and was followed by a period of incomplete relaxation. A complete second contraction occurred immediately afterwards, followed by an interval of complete relaxation and the return of the organ to its original position. When the cows were ruminating, a regurgitation contraction, which was incomplete, occurred immediately before the biphasic contraction. The number of reticular contractions in a nine-minute period was largest when the cows were eating (13.9 contractions, or approximately 1.5 per minute) and smallest when they were stressed (9.3 contractions, or approximately 1 per minute). The duration of the first reticular contraction was shortest during rumination (2.4 seconds) and longest when the cows were eating (3.0 seconds). The interval between two biphasic contractions was shortest when the cows were eating (31.6 seconds) and longest when they were stressed (53.8 seconds).  相似文献

Four nonlactating Holstein dairy cows (BW = 692 +/- 49 kg) were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square design experiment to determine how changes in attributes of reticular contractions were related to changes in passage of digesta from the ruminoreticulum in cattle fed a forage-based diet. Frequencies of reticular contraction during eating, ruminating, and resting phases of the feeding cycle were not affected (P = .09; P = .07; P = .09, respectively) by feeding level. Duration and amplitude of reticular contractions both increased linearly during eating (P = .03; P = .01), ruminating (P = .01; P = .02), and resting (P = .04; P = .02), respectively, as feed intake level increased. After removing the effects of intake, squared partial correlations computed within analyses of covariance indicated that NDF flow was not related to frequency (r2 = .15, P = .20) but was positively correlated with duration (r2 = .76, P = .0001) and amplitude (r2 = .56, P = .003) of contraction, indicating that duration and amplitude of reticular contraction were more associated with duodenal NDF flow than frequency. However, duration of reticular contraction (r2 = .47, P = .014) explained a greater variation in duodenal NDF flow than amplitude (r2 = .011, P = .74). Stepwise multiple regression also indicated that duration of reticular contraction was the attribute most associated (r2 = .76, P = .0001) with duodenal NDF flow. It was concluded that the changes in digesta passage from the ruminoreticulum were associated primarily with changes in the duration of reticular contraction.  相似文献

This study aims to evaluate the effects of substituting increasing concentrations of shredded beet pulp (SBP) for corn silage (CS) on nutrient intake, sorting index, intakes of particle size and nutrients, meal and rumination patterns, and chewing activity of dairy cows. Four multiparous (126 ± 13 day in milk) and 4 primiparous (121 ± 11 day in milk) Holstein cows were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design experiment with 4 periods of 21 days. Dietary treatments were (DM basis): 16% of dietary DM as CS without SBP (0SBP); 8% CS and 8% SBP (8SBP); 4% CS and 12% SBP (12SBP); and 0% CS and 16% SBP (16SBP). We observed a reduction in the extent of sorting against long particles and medium particles but for fine particles with increasing SBP levels in the diets. The number of eating bouts per day was lesser (8.2%) in cows fed SBP diets compared with 0SBP cows and corresponded with a reduction in eating time per d across treatments. The number of ruminating bouts per day was similar across diets (16.8 bouts/day), but substituting SBP for CS in the diets tended to decrease linearly ruminating bout length (5 min/bout) and tended to increase ruminating bout interval (8 min/day). Eating, ruminating and total chewing time when expressed as minutes per kilogram of forage NDF intake and peNDF > 8 intake increased when SBP was substituted for CS in the diets. Primiparous cows had greater ruminating time (57 m/day) and total chewing time (73 min/day), eating rate (0.01 kg of DM/min) compared with multiparous cows. Also, increasing forage NDF and peNDF>8, >8‐mm DM intakes are effective means of stimulating ruminating and chewing activities. This study showed that SBP could partially replace CS and not affect DM intake, but chewing activity may decrease slightly.  相似文献

Forty-eight Angus and Hereford cows were used in a completely random design with a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to evaluate the effects of monensin and two sources of Mg on performance, ruminal characteristics and mineral status of mature beef cows. Cows were fed wheat straw treated with NH3 during late gestation and straw treated with NH3 plus bromegrass haylage after calving along with a protein supplement that contained either MgO (7.5 g/kg) or MgSO4 (11 g/kg). One half of the cows received monensin (1 g/kg) in their protein supplement. During the precalving period, MgO without monensin increased (P less than .01) plasma Mg compared with Mg in plasma of cows receiving MgSO4 or MgO with monensin. Magnesium oxide also increased cow weight gains during late gestation (P less than .05) compared with weight gains of cows supplemented with MgSO4, but magnesium source had no effect on weight gain postcalving. Plasma glucose was increased by monensin (P less than .05) and by MgSO4 (P less than .01) during early lactation. Monensin increased the proportion of propionate before (P less than .05) and after (P less than .10) calving in the ruminal fluid of cows. Monensin also increased (P less than .05) cow weight gain precalving and tended to decrease (P less than .10) milk fat in lactating cows. Calf weight gains were not affected by treatment of dam. Magnesium oxide appeared to have higher Mg bioavailability than MgSO4 for cows precalving, but Mg bioavailability was not different postcalving. Monensin increased cow weight gains precalving and improved feed efficiency postcalving.  相似文献

Four ruminally cannulated Holstein steers (average BW 303 kg) were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square design digestion trial to study the influence of daily cottonseed meal (CSM; 1.6 g of CP/kg of BW) supplementation time on forage intake and ruminal fluid kinetics and fermentation. Steers were housed individually in tie stalls and were fed chopped fescue hay on an ad libitum basis at 0600 and 1400. Treatments were 1) control, grass hay only (CON) and grass hay and CSM fed once daily at 2) 0600 (EAM) 3) 1000 (MAM), or 4) 1400 (PM). Ruminal NH3 N concentrations reflected a time of supplementation x sampling time interaction (P less than .05); CON steers had the lowest (P less than .05) ruminal NH3 N concentrations at all times other than at 0600, 1000, 1200, and 2400, when they did not differ (P greater than .05) from at least one of the supplemented groups. Forage intake, ratio of bacterial purine:N, rate of DM and NDF disappearance, and ruminal fluid kinetics were not influenced (P greater than .05) by supplementation time. Total ruminal VFA differed (P less than .05) between CON and supplemented steers, as well as among supplemented steers (linear and quadratic effects P less than .05). Acetate, propionate, and valerate proportions were influenced (P less than .05) by a sampling time X supplementation time interaction. Under the conditions of this study, greater peak ammonia concentrations with morning supplementation than with afternoon supplementation did not stimulate ruminal fermentation or rate of NDF disappearance.  相似文献

To describe the feeding behavior of growing heifers fed high-concentrate diets with different sources of protein and nonstructural carbohydrates, and to explain the ruminal fermentation pattern, 4 ruminally fistulated Holstein heifers (BW = 132.3 +/- 1.61 kg) were assigned to a 4 x 4 Latin square design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Two non-structural carbohydrate sources (barley and corn) and 2 protein sources [soybean meal (SBM) and sunflower meal (SFM)] that differ in their rate and extent of ruminal degradation were combined, resulting in a synchronized, rapid fermentation diet (barley-SFM), a synchronized, slow fermentation diet (corn-SBM), and 2 unsynchronized diets consisting of a rapidly and a slowly fermenting component (barley-SBM and corn-SFM). The corn-SFM diet resulted in a lower frequency of feeding (P < or = 0.05), longer meal length (P < or = 0.043), and larger meal size (P < or = 0.037) than the other 3 diets. Dietary treatment had no effect (P > or = 0.09) on the daily percentages of posture and behaviors. In general, heifers spent 9.97 +/- 0.83% of the day eating, 2.11 +/- 0.42% drinking, 25.13 +/- 1.36% ruminating, 16.97 +/- 1.42% in other activities such as social behavior and self-grooming, and the rest of the day (45.82 +/- 2.55%) resting or doing no chewing activities. Eating, drinking, and social behaviors were performed while standing (P < or = 0.01), whereas resting and ruminating occurred mainly while lying (P = 0.001). Eating took place mainly in the first 4 h after feeding (P = 0.001), whereas ruminating occurred mainly at night (P = 0.001). When chewing activities (eating and ruminating) were expressed per kilogram of DM or NDF from roughage intake, more time (P = 0.004) was spent chewing per kilogram of DMI for barley-based diets, and per kilogram of NDF from roughage intake for barley- (P = 0.01) and SFM- (P = 0.002) based diets. Tethered heifers fed the more fermentable and rapidly synchronized diet (barley-SFM) reduced intake and increased chewing time. With these high-concentrate diets, time spent chewing was inversely related to roughage intake.  相似文献

The effect of monensin (33 mg/kg) and no monensin on distribution of ammonia and free amino acids in fluid and particulate phases of ruminal contents was studied. Two Jersey cows and two Angus-Hereford steers, weighing approximately 350 kg and each containing a ruminal cannula were meal fed a 65% concentrate diet for two periods. Feed was available for 30 min; any feed not eaten was removed after this time. Whole ruminal contents were sampled before feeding, immediately after feed removal and 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 h after feed removal. A crossover design with split-plot in time was used with four observations per time point per treatment. Extracellular (E) ammonia and amino acids were determined on high speed supernatants of strained ruminal fluid. Total (T) ammonia and amino acids were obtained by lysing microbial cells with 1% cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and one freeze treatment before centrifugation. Intracellular (I) amino acids and ammonia were determined as T minus E. Squeezed particles were suspended in .1 N HCl containing 1% CTAB. Total and E ammonia were higher throughout the study for no monensin vs monensin (P less than .05). Intracellular ammonia was low (.03 to 1 mM) and did not change (P greater than .10) across time for either dietary treatment. Intracellular amino acids ranged from 1.2 to 4.5 mM and were higher (P less than .05) than E amino acids (.9 to 2.2 mM) for both diets immediately after feeding. Monensin did not significantly lower (P greater than .10) T amino acids compared with no monensin throughout sampling (2.6 and 3.1 mM, respectively).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
