Comparative sheep production from Aurora (very early-flowering), Meltra (late-flowering tetraploid) and Aberystwyth S23 (late-flowering) perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties was assessed as both grass-only (200 kg N ha−1) and grass-white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) (75 kg N ha−1) swards under continuous stocking management. Beulah Speckled Face ewes and their Suffolk cross lambs were used from late April to mid-July. From late July to early November only lambs grazed the pastures.
Mean (1985–87) total annual lamb production per hectare from Aurora and Meltra was 16% and 13% more than that from S23. The magnitude of the differences between these varieties and S23 declined from the first to the third year. Aurora gave 29% more lamb output per hectare than S23 in 1985 but only 10% more in 1987, while the advantage of Meltra over S23 fell from 19% in 1985 to 6% in 1987. Seasonal lamb production per hectare varied between the grasses, especially during spring when lamb output from Aurora was 43% and 22% more than that from S23 and Meltra respectively, with that from the tetraploid being 17% higher than that from S23.
It is concluded that the superior spring output from Aurora offers the farmer the opportunity to reduce his dependence on bought-in feedstuffs, hence improving the efficiency and profitability of lamb production from grassland.  相似文献

Herbage characteristics were studied over years 4–6 (1988–90) in three perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties as grass-only (200 kg N ha-1) and grass/clover ( Trifolium repens L.) swards which received 75kg N ha-1 in 1988 and 0kg N ha-1 in 1989 and 1990 when continuously stocked with sheep. Mean total annual herbage production of Aurora, a very early flowering variety, was 11% more than that of late-flowering Aberystwyth S23 due to 21% higher growth as grass/clover pasture. The grass/clover sward of Meltra, a tetraploid late-flowering variety, out-yielded S23/clover by 17%. Herbage production of grass/clover was 86% of that of grass only in 1988 but only 54% of the grass-only swards averaged for 1989 and 1990.
In vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD) of Meltra was 38g kg-1 OM and 27g kg-1 OM higher than that of S23 and Aurora respectively. OMD of grass/clover was 15g kg-1 OM higher than that of grass only during the post-weaning period. Herbage intake was positively correlated with OMD of herbage.
The herbage attributes were related to lamb performance reported previously. Lamb output was positively correlated with intake of digestible organic matter.
Differences between the three varieties in herbage characteristics were greater as grass/clover than as grass-only swards, reflecting their compatibility with white clover. In this respect Meltra was the best and S23 the poorest variety.  相似文献

Relative sheep production from Aurora (very early flowering), Mellra (late-flowering tetraploid) and Aberystwyth S23 (late flowering) perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties was compared during harvest years 4-6 (1988-90) as grass only (200 kg N ha−1) and grass/clover (75 kg N ha −1 in 1988, 0 kg N ha−1 in 1989 and 1990) at Bronydd Mawr Research Centre (310-363 m) in mid-Wales. The pastures were continuously stocked with Beulah Speckled Face ewes and their Suffolk cross lambs from spring to mid-July. From late July to early November only the weaned lambs grazed the swards.
Mean (1988-90) total annual lamb production per hectare from Aurora and Meltra was 70% and 16% more than that from S23. However, the difference between both varieties and S23 was much greater as grass/clover (Aberystwyth S184 small-leaved type) than as grass-only swards. Differences between the grasses in individual lamb growth rates were most pronounced during the post-weaning period, when that on Meltra was 38% and 23% more than on Aurora and S23 respectively.
Mean annual lamb output from grass/clover swards was only 70% of that from grass-only swards during the 2 years when the former swards received no fertilizer N. Averaged over the 3 years (1988-90) individual lamb liveweight gain post weaning was 38% higher on grass/clover than on grass-only swards.
The results are discussed in relation to those for the first 3 harvest years (1985-87). It is concluded that, although Aurora was less persistent than both late-flowering varieties, its superiority in providing an average of 29% more lamb output than S23 during the critical spring period (up to early June) would be of considerable practical significance in upland sheep systems, as would be the overall superiority of the tetraploid Meltra over S23.  相似文献

A field experiment was established in May 1986 in which four white-clover populations originating in Switzerland, and a bred variety, Menna, were grown in binary mixtures with their 'co-existing' perennial ryegrasses and three other bred ryegrasses— Aurora, Talbot and Melle. The productivity of both components of the mixtures was measured by cutting samples in October 1986 (after establishment) and on five occasions during the growing season in 1987, Substantial differences were observed between clover yields in different mixtures, and the yield ranking of clover was found to vary with companion grass. It was concluded that the interaction between grass and clover populations originated at an early stage in sward development, being evident in both the 1986 establishment cut and the spring cut of the following year. The implications of these results for the formulation of breeding objectives and the evaluation of breeding material are briefly discussed.  相似文献

White clover content and herbage production in grass/clover swards were studied at contrasting altitudes in Wales. The lowland experiment (1) compared the performance of three clover varieties grown with four diploid perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) varieties with a range of heading dates. In the upland experiment (2) the productivity and persistence of Aberystwyth S184 (small-leaved) clover was studied in association with three perennial ryegrasses.
In experiment I. clover content and dry matter production with Aurora (very early) ryegrass was superior to that with Frances (early), Talbot (intermediate) and Melle (late). Furthermore, the performance of Kent wild white clover (small-leaved) was better than that of medium-leaved Menna and Grasslands Huia. Averaged over two years (1985 and 1986) mean clover content of Kent was 22% compared with 9% and 10% of Menna and Huia.
Performance of S184 clover during the five years (1986–90) of experiment 2 was better with Meltra (late tetraploid) than with Aberystwyth S23 (late diploid) and intermediate with Aurora. Clover stolon length and growing point number declined to a low level in 1988 but increased dramatically in 1989 and 1990 after cessation of applying fertilizer N.
Results from both sites were related to animal performance data previously published. It is concluded that small-leaved clover varieties are needed to ensure a high proportion of clover in sheep pastures and also that choice of companion ryegrass can have a significant effect on the performance of the legume component.  相似文献

Herbage at various stages of growth from three field experiments, one with Italian ryegrass, one with perennial ryegrass and one with white clover, red clover and lucerne, was incubated for 0, 24 or 48 h in rumen liquor followed by 48 h in acid-pepsin. The proportion of cell content OM in herbage (measured by pepsin) declined with advancing stage of growth more quickly in the legumes than in Italian ryegrass. At a high level of digestibility the legumes had a higher proportion of cell content OM than Italian ryegrass, but the position tended to be reversed at a low level of digestibility. Decline in proportion of cell content and decline in digestibility of cell wall were both major contributors to the decline in digestibility of Italian ryegrass with advancing maturity, whereas in white clover the decline in proportion of cell content was entirely responsible for the decline in digestibility. Lucerne and red clover occupied intermediate positions. At an early vegetative stage rate of digestion appeared to be higher in Italian than in perennial ryegrass. Rate of digestion was higher in the legumes than in the ryegrasses, the difference being largest at an advanced stage of growth.  相似文献

Performance of continuously stocked Mule ewes nursing Suffolk-cross twin lambs over three grazing seasons, between April and August, was compared on swards of N-fertilized diploid perennial ryegrass (D), tetraploid perennial ryegrass (T) and tetraploid perennial ryegrass with white clover (TC), the latter receiving no fertilizer N. Sward height was maintained by variable stocking rate close to a target of 4–6 cm (constant treatment) from turnout and compared in July and August with a rising sward height treatment (target 6–8 cm). Lambs on TC swards had significantly higher (P <0·001) liveweight gains compared with lambs on T swards by 41 gd-1 in April–June and by 68gd-1 in July-August. Live weight and body condition score of ewes in August were significantly higher (P<0·001) on TC compared with T swards, by 11·3 kg and 0·75 respectively. Rising sward heights in July–August increased live-weight gain of lambs compared with constant sward heights by 102, 39 and 54gd-1 in consecutive years, associated with sward height increases of 0·9, 0·5 and 0·6cm respectively. Rising sward height increased ewe live weight and body condition score by 5·1 kg and 0·3 respectively, compared with results from constant sward heights. Effects of sward height and sward type were additive. T swards had a significantly (P<0·01) 16% greater overall lamb output than the D swards due mainly to a 10% higher achieved stocking rate. Stocking rates of ewes on TC vs T swards were 40, 13 and 12% lower in April-August in successive years. The higher liveweight gain of lambs on the TC swards resulted in lamb outputs of 76, 105 and 101% of the T swards in successive years, showing that grass/clover swards containing over 20% clover could produce similar lamb output ha-1 to grass swards given 150–180 kg N ha-1.  相似文献

The effects of severity of grazing on the herbage intake and milk production of continuously stocked British Friesian cows calving in February–March were examined in three experiments conducted in the years 1976–78 (experiments 1–3 respectively) using a put-and-take technique. In experiment 1 four grazing severities were imposed by maintaining swards with different herbage masses (2500, 3000, 3500, 4000 kg OM ha-1); in experiments 2 and 3 there were two severities of grazing maintained by keeping swards canopies at constant heights of 5 and 7 cm (experiment 2) and 5 and 7·2 cm (experiment 3). Cows were reallocated to treatment every 8 weeks in experiments 1 and 2 and there were three periods, whereas they all grazed throughout a 23-week period on the same treatment in the final trial.
A decrease in the quantity of herbage on offer or in sward height reduced herbage intake and milk production in all experiments. Mean daily herbage OM intakes were 11·2, 12·2, 12·2 and 12·2 kg respectively in experiment 1, 12·2 and 13·2 kg respectively in experiment 2 and 12·2 and 152 kg respectively in experiment 3. Mean daily solids–corrected milk yields were 14·2, 15·2, 15·2 and 16·2 kg respectively in experiment 1, 14·2 and 16·2 kg respectively in experiment 2 and 12·2 and 17·2 kg respectively in experiment 3. It was apparent from the data obtained in the first two trials that grazing at a sward canopy height of 7 rather than 9 cm had little effect, but that at 5 cm there were significant depressions in both herbage intake and milk production. Milk yield was depressed to a greater extent when cows were kept on the same treatment for the whole season.  相似文献

Five binary perennial grass/white clover (Trifolium repens, cv. Menna) mixtures were evaluated over a 3-year period under continuous sheep stocking together with the imposition of a rest period for either an early or a late conservation cut; the experiment with plot sizes of 0·16 ha was replicated three times. The grass species and cultivars used were Merlinda tetraploid and Magella diploid perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), Prairial cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata), Rossa meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) and Goliath timothy (Phleum pratense). The greatest total lengths of white clover stolon developed in the meadow fescue (171·6 m m?2) and timothy (151·9 m m?2) associations compared with those in tetraploid perennial ryegrass (98·6 m m?2), diploid perennial ryegrass (91·9 m m?2) and cocksfoot (74·6 m m?2) (s.e.d. 16·4, P < 0·001). On average, the proportion of white clover stolon that was buried was between 0·86 and 0·89 and this was more abundant in late than early season. Whereas timothy persisted, the persistence of meadow fescue was low under any of the managements tested and this was markedly reduced by the third grazing season. In the diploid perennial ryegrass sward, a late June to early August rest period for conservation enhanced white clover stolon length. An early April to late May rest period greatly reduced total white clover stolon length in both diploid perennial ryegrass and tetraploid perennial ryegrass associations (diploid perennial ryegrass-unrested 89 m m?2, early rest 56·1 m m?2, late rest 130·7 m m?2; tetraploid perennial ryegrass - unrested 125·1 m m?2, early rest 71 m m?2, late rest 99·7 m m?2; s.e.d. 19·19, P < 0·001). The numbers of white clover stolon growing points per unit stolon length were greatest when the sward was rested during late June to early August ?55·9 m?1 stolon length compared with 45·7 m?1 for an April to late May rest and 46 m?1 in the absence of a rest (s.e.d. 2·59, P < 0·001). Likewise, the percentage of stolon above ground was greatest with the late June to early August rest ?15·78% compared with 10·61% for the April to late May rest and 7·69% for no rest (s.e.d. 1·569, P < 0·001). The complementary percentages of buried stolon indicate the important role this fraction has and the need to study stolon behaviour in grazing studies generally. It is concluded that, in relation to perennial ryegrass as a companion grass, meadow fescue and timothy allow better white clover development and cocksfoot less. However, other attributes have to be considered, for example the poor persistence of meadow fescue and the slower regrowth of timothy, both of which allow the invasion of weed grasses, or the lower acceptability of cocksfoot to livestock. The timing of the rest period before the conservation cut can influence white clover development considerably, but the effects differed with different companion grasses.  相似文献

Non‐pregnant, non‐lactating ewes grazed adjacent monocultures of white clover and perennial ryegrass with three sward surface height (SSH) combinations [6 cm white clover: 6 cm perennial ryegrass (c6g6), 3 cm white clover: 6 cm perennial ryegrass (c3g6), 3 cm white clover: 9 cm perennial ryegrass (c3g9)] at two stocking densities (21·3 or 29·8 ewes ha–1). Immediately prior to the experiment, all ewes grazed a c6g6 sward. Grazing time on each plant species was recorded during daylight over two 48 h‐test periods. Subsequently, herbage intake rates for each species at each SSH were measured allowing intakes of each species to be calculated. For the first 24 h of both test periods (D1), ewes on treatment c3g6 spent less time grazing white clover than those on treatment c6g6 (228 vs. 362 min) and more time grazing perennial ryegrass (360 vs. 182 min). Total grazing time on treatment c3g6 was more than on treatment c6g6 (587 vs. 544 min) but the difference was not significant. Perennial ryegrass intake was higher (895 vs. 452 g), and white clover intake (814 vs. 1687 g), total intake (1719 vs. 2140 g) and proportion of white clover in the diet (0·460 vs. 0·794) were lower for treatment c3g6 than treatment c6g6. There were no significant differences in total grazing time, grazing time on either species, proportion of grazing time on white clover or proportion of white clover in the diet between treatment c3g6 and treatment c3g9. However, the higher intake rate of perennial ryegrass in treatment c3g9 led to higher perennial ryegrass and total intakes. For the second 24 h of both test periods (D2), ewes on treatment c3g6 again spent more time grazing perennial ryegrass than on treatment c6g6 (270 vs. 161 min) but time spent grazing white clover was similar (318 vs. 308 min). Total grazing time was significantly higher on treatment c3g6 than on treatment c6g6 (588 vs. 469 min) but proportion of grazing time on white clover was similar (0·554 vs. 0·668). Perennial ryegrass intake was significantly higher for treatment c3g6 than for treatment c6g6 (672 vs. 402 g) while white clover intake was significantly lower (1140 vs. 1435 g) but total intake was similar (1812 vs. 1836 g). The proportion of white clover in the diet was significantly lower for treatment c3g6 (0.628 vs. 0.785) than for treatment c6g6. The only significant differences between treatments c3g6 and c3g9 were in perennial ryegrass intake (672 vs. 906 g) and in total intake (1812 vs. 2287 g). Intake of perennial ryegrass on treatment c3g9 was also significantly greater than on treatment c6g6 (906 vs. 402 g) and total intake was higher (2287 vs. 1836 g). At the higher stocking density, time spent grazing perennial ryegrass and perennial ryegrass intake were significantly lower on D1 and D2 while total grazing time was also significantly lower and proportion of time grazing white clover and proportion of white clover in the diet were significantly higher at the higher stocking rate on D2. The results indicate that behaviour changed over the 48 h observation period for treatments c3g6 and c3g9 but behaviour remained relatively constant for animals on treatment c6g6. Ewes traded off dietary preference against total intake by altering grazing times on perennial ryegrass and white clover to achieve maximum net benefit.  相似文献

Two 1·0 ha plots of a late-heading diploid perennial ryegrass (var. Contender) and a late-heading tetraploid ryegrass (var. Condesa), and two 1·4 ha plots of the tetraploid with Aberystwyth S184 small-leaved white clover, were direct sown in May 1987. Over the three years 1988–90 they were continuously stocked by Mule ewes with Suffolk-cross twin lambs, from early April to the end of August, at a target sward surface height (SSH) of 4–6 cm on one set of plots (constant swards) and, on the other set, al 4–6 cm rising after June to a target 6–8 cm (rising swards). The heights were achieved by variable stocking. Fertilizer N was applied only to the grass plots at the rate of 150- 180kgN ha-1 annually.
SSH was mainly within the target 4–6 cm, after higher initial heights at turnout in 1988and 1990. Mean heights of the constant swards (April- August) averaged 5·53, 4·43 and 5·04cm in the three years. The rising swards (July-August) increased in height over the constant swards by an average of 0·88, 0·48 and 0·55 cm, in successive years.
Clover content of the herbage mass dry matter in the grass/clover swards increased over each grazing season to average 13·0, 26·5 and 21·2% in the three years, with a high mean stolon density of 130 in m-2 in August 1990. Ryegrass tiller densities in year 3 were 23% higher in the diploid than in the tetraploid swards, which had 43% more than the 10000 tillers m-2 of the tetraploid ryegrass/clover swards.
It is concluded that the combination of a densely stoloniferous small-leaved clover with the open growth habit of a tetraploid ryegrass can achieve swards of high clover content under continuous sheep stocking.  相似文献

The effect of blending small- and medium-leaved white clovers together in a mixture of varieties was examined under continuous sheep stocking over a period of three years. Four varieties were used, S184 and Gwenda, small-leaved varieties suitable for intensive sheep grazing, together with medium leaved varieties Menna and Donna, which are mainly used in general purpose seed mixtures for medium term leys. The small-leaved varieties were blended with Menna or Donna, sown with a commercial grass mixture and managed as near as possible to farm practice. Although the leaf size of Gwenda is only slightly greater than that of S184, blends based on these two small-leaved varieties behaved differently. In spring of the first harvest year the yield of Gwenda and of the clover in mixtures containing Gwenda was 27% greater than the yield of the same mixtures which contained S184. As the season progressed this difference decreased. In terms of total annual yields and saving in fertilizer N, the benefits of including white clover in a seed mixture were more pronounced when Menna was mixed with S184 and Gwenda, rather than when Donna was used, although both varieties are in the medium-leaf category. It was concluded that the slower establishment and the lower clover yield of S184, when compared with larger leaved varieties, can be overcome by blending with a variety that is slightly larger in leaf size, such as Menna, although the choice of variety may depend on sward management and its persistency under grazing.  相似文献

Plots of five intermediate‐heading varieties of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) [AberDove, Belramo and Glen (diploid); Twins (tetraploid); and AberExcel (tetraploid hybrid)] were continuously stocked with sheep to maintain a target sward surface height of 40–50 mm. Daily dry matter (DM) intake was significantly different (F‐value = 0·032) between the varieties, with the tetraploid hybrid AberExcel having the highest values for daily DM intake and intake rate during eating. Amongst the diploid varieties, intake rate tended to be higher for sheep grazing Glen. The varieties comprised a wide range in potential growth habit, from the relatively prostrate, highly tillered Glen to the more‐erect AberExcel and there were differences between them in the vertical distribution of leaves within the sward canopy. The leaves of AberExcel weighed 3·6 mg DM cm?2 leaf area in contrast to the other varieties (4·3–5·3 mg DM cm?2 leaf area) resulting in a high leaf area index (LAI) in relation to the green leaf mass. Intake rate was not significantly correlated with extended tiller and sheath tube lengths, partition of herbage mass, number of tillers per square metre or LAI. However, canonical variates analysis showed that there were significant differences between the varieties for the morphological and chemical factors examined. Other factors also need to be explored to explain these differences in ingestive behaviour in order to identify plant traits that are correlated with herbage intake rate. These are needed for varieties destined for grazing use, both during the breeding programme and their subsequent evaluation.  相似文献

Seven varieties or advanced breeding lines of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.), all of small leaf size, were grown separately in mixtures with perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) in an experiment encompassing three harvest years. Harvestable dry-matter (DM) yield measurements were taken of these mixtures and of perennial ryegrass monocultures under two management regimes: cutting and continuous sheep grazing. Considerable differences were observed in the harvestable DM yields of white clover, perennial ryegrass and total yields of the mixtures between plots containing different white clover varieties. White clover yields were generally higher under cutting, and perennial ryegrass yields were higher under grazing. The difference between perennial ryegrass yield in monoculture and in mixture was variable. In the second harvest year, a significant interaction effect was seen between management and white clover variety for white clover yield but not for perennial ryegrass yield. The relationship between clover yield and grass yield differed between the two management regimes. Under cutting, a negative correlation was observed, indicative of competitive effects. However, under grazing, no such correlation was seen. Possible mechanisms underlying these outcomes are discussed.  相似文献

In 1988 and 1989, swards of grass (G0), while clover (C0) and grass/white clover (GC0) receiving no N fertilizer, and a grass sward supplied with 420 kg N ha?1 (G420), were grazed by non-lactating sheep to maintain a sward surface height of 6 cm. Herbage organic matter (OM) intakes averaged between 1200 and 1700 g OM ewe?1 d?1. For treatments G0, C0, GC0 and G420 respectively, the ewes' live weight gain was 102, 112, 100 and 110 g d?1 and changes in body condition scores were +0·28, +0·52, +0·36 and +0·44 units season?1. However, the effect of treatment was not significant for either variable. There were similar levels of output of faecal N ewe?1 but significantly more urinary N ewe?1 was excreted on treatments C0 and G420, where the concentrations of N in herbage laminae were also higher. For example, in 1989, total daily N excreted was 39·7, 64·4, 44·0 and 63·3 g N ewe?1 for G0, C0, GC0 and G420 respectively. Taking into account the mean daily stocking rates, which were 19·4, 26·6, 27·2 and 36·5 ewe ha?1, the total faeces and urine returns over the season were 161, 358, 249 and 484 kg N ha?1 for each treatment respectively. The herbage OM intakes ewes?1 d?1 measured in September and October were similar for C0 and G420, and so the intake of herbage OM ha?1 d?1 was related to stocking rate, i. e. the estimated herbage intake ha?1 over the growing season for the white clover monoculture was 73% of that for N-fertilized grass. Excretal nitrogen returns to the pasture from grazed mono-cultures of clover were high, and similar to those from a grass sward receiving 420 kg fertilizer N ha?1. Consequently potential losses of N to the environment are high under these management systems.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the associative effects between fresh perennial ryegrass and fresh white clover on intake and digestion in sheep. Five proportions of ryegrass and white clover, ranging from 0 to 1 in 0·25 increments (DM basis), were allocated to two groups of five sheep according to a replicated 5 × 5 Latin square design, and intake behaviour and digestive parameters including methane (CH4) emissions were measured. Feeding behaviour was affected through increased forage intake when the proportion of white clover was increased, and there were positive associative effects on intake, eating time and eating rate during the main meals consumed immediately after feed was given. These effects seemed to be related to a greater motivation to eat, rather to more efficient digestion, as no difference on DM digestibility (average 766 g kg?1) was detected. There were no differences in CH4 yield (average 18·1 g kg?1 DM intake) among the treatments. The optimal proportion of white clover fed with ryegrass to optimize intake and digestion was between 0·25 and 0·50. These results indicate that mixing perennial ryegrass and white clover positively affects forage intake in sheep and their motivation to eat.  相似文献

Results for years 4–8 of a long-term grazing experiment on swards of a diploid perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), var. Contender (D swards), a tetraploid ryegrass, var. Condesa (T swards) and Condesa with S184 white clover (Trifolium repens) (TC swards), direct sown in May 1987, are presented. The swards were continuously stocked with sheep from 1988 to 1990, as previously reported, and for a further 5 years, 1991–95, at a target sward surface height (SSH) of 4–6 cm. Control of sward height was successfully achieved by variable stocking, except in 1993 when paddocks were set stocked and the resulting mean SSH was 9·3 cm. Grass swards received on average 160 kg N ha?1 year?1; grass/clover swards were mainly not fertilized with N with the exception that they were given 30 kg N ha?1 as a remedial mid-summer application during a period of low herbage mass on offer in 1994 and 1995. Mean white clover content of the swards fell from 18·2% of herbage dry-matter (DM) in 1992 to 8·5% in 1993, whereas stolon lengths fell from 120 to 58 m m?2. A return to lower sward heights in 1994–95 resulted in an increase in white clover content to 12·8% by the final sampling in August 1995. Perennial ryegrass content of the grass swards remained high throughout (mean 96·7% in 1995). Perennial ryegrass tiller densities recorded in August 1991, 1993 and 1994 showed consistently significant (P < 0·001) sward differences (3-year mean 16 600, 13 700 and 10 100 perennial ryegrass tillers m?2 for the D, T and TC swards). In 1994, the year after lax grazing, a low perennial ryegrass tiller density (9100 m?2) and low white clover content (mean 4·3%) in the TC swards resulted in a much lower herbage bulk density than in the grass swards (April–July means 72, 94 and 44 kg OM ha?1 cm?1 for the D, T and TC swards). There was a consistent 40 g d?1 increase in lamb liveweight gain on the TC swards over the T swards, except in 1994. In that year there was a reduction in lamb liveweight gain of 33 g d?1 on the TC swards and a significant increase in ewe liveweight loss (117 g d?1) associated with low herbage bulk density despite optimal sward height. Lamb output (kg liveweight ha?1) on TC swards reflected white clover content, falling from a similar output to that produced from grass given 160 kg N ha?1, at 18% white clover DM content, down to 60% of grass + N swards with around 5% clover. A 6% greater output from the T than the D swards was achieved mainly through higher stocking rate. The experiment demonstrated a rapid, loss in white clover under lax grazing, and showed that the relationship between performance and sward height is also dependent on herbage density. High lamb output from a grass/clover sward was only achieved when the clover content was maintained at 15–20% of the herbage DM.  相似文献

Ewe and lamb performance, herbage production and feed quality components on four late-flowering perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties were assessed under a fixed stocking management at an upland site (305 m OD) in mid-Wales. Averaged over four years (1981–84) there was no significant difference (P>0·05) between Aberystwyth S23, Aberystwyth Ajax, Perma and Meltra (tetraploid) in ewe and iamb liveweight gains. There were, however, considerable differences between varieties during individual years and their relative ranking also changed substantially over the four years. Lamb production on Perma was 22% more than on S23 in the first year but by the fourth year it was 21 % less than on the latter variety.
Differences between varieties were observed in herbage production. Net herbage accumulation was 15% more on Meltra than on Ajax whilst the calculated quantity of OM consumed was 19% higher from Meltra than from both Ajax and S23. Net animal liveweight gains were positively correlated with herbage production (r = 0·95, P < 0·05) and DOM consumed (r=0·96. P<0·05).  相似文献

Comparative herbage characteristics and sheep production (ewes and lambs until weaning and lambs thereafter) from swards of Aurora (very early flowering), Frances (early flowering), Talbot (intermediate flowering) and Melle (late flowering) varieties of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) were studied under a continuous variable stocking management based on sward surface height guidelines. The varieties were assessed as grass-only (215 kg N ha−1 fertilizer) and grass/clover (83 kg N ha−1 fertilizer) pastures.
Over 2 years (1985-86) total annual lamb production per hectare from grass-only swards of Aurora was 19% more than that from Frances despite similar herbage productivity. Differences between the varieties in lamb output were more pronounced as grass/clover swards, with Aurora producing 29 and 18% more lamb than Melle and Talbot respectively and with Frances also giving 16% more than Melle. Overall lamb production from grass/clover swards was 10% more than that from the grass-only pastures, mainly due to 69% advantage in individual lamb growth rates after weaning. Herbage organic matter digestibility, during the post-weaning period, was higher on grass/clover than on grass-only swards, and similarly with Aurora versus the other varieties. Under a frequent cut simulated grazing regime the relative herbage productivity of the four varieties differed, with Aurora 13% less productive than Frances.
The results are discussed in relation to the limitations of assessing performance under cutting, and the significance of the interaction in animal productivity between the two sward types.  相似文献

Abstract Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the performance of blends of three white clover (Trifolium repens L.) varieties in comparison with the component varieties and three other varieties sown individually in a mixture with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). The plots were grazed rotationally in Experiment 1 by cattle and sheep and in Experiment 2 by sheep alone. In both experiments, the blend was composed of three medium‐leaved varieties (AberDai, AberVantage and AberHerald), but with different relative contributions of the three varieties in the two experiments. Dry matter (DM) yields of white clover and perennial ryegrass were assessed in replicate plots for two years (1999 and 2000) after the establishment year. In Experiment 1, there was no significant difference between the DM yields of white clover or perennial ryegrass in either year. The decline in DM yield of white clover between years that was observed for some varieties was not found for the blend. In Experiment 2, significant differences were found in DM yields of white clover in both years. In 1999, AberDai had the highest DM yield. In 2000, AberHerald and AberVantage had the highest DM yields, and AberDai showed a decline in DM yield that was mirrored by the mean for all the white clover varieties. In both experiments, the blend did not show significantly higher DM yield than one or more of its components; indeed, in Experiment 2, it was significantly lower yielding than AberDai in 1999. However, where one component of the blend declined in DM yield between years, this was compensated for by an increase in the yield of another component. These preliminary findings suggest that the yield stability of blends may give them a potential role in agricultural practice.  相似文献
