Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is considered an efficient genetic tool in pearl millet hybrid breeding. Of the several CMS sources available in pearl millet, A1 is the only CMS widely exploited to produce commercial hybrids in India. To explore the possibility of using alternate CMS sources, we studied the cytoplasmic effects of different CMS sources on agronomic characters in pearl millet. Five CMS (A) lines representing A1, A2, A3, A4 and A5 cytoplasms, their respective maintainer (B) lines and eight restorer (R) lines were used to generate 40 A × R and B × R experimental crosses. The experimental material was evaluated at two different locations in India. Analysis of combining ability and heterosis revealed that A4 and A5 cytoplasms had desirable effects for earliness. The A5 CMS was found to be particularly promising, as compared to other CMS sources for improving grain yield. The study also indicated that the cytoplasmic effects on general combining ability (GCA) for various agronomic characters were largely non-significant. However, cytoplasmic effects on specific combining ability and heterosis were found to be modulated by cytoplasmic-nuclear interactions and influenced by the environmental conditions. The study also demonstrated the advantage of utilizing diverse male-sterile and restorer combinations in maximizing the productivity as well as for genetic and cytoplasmic diversification of hybrids in pearl millet.  相似文献

Summary Four hundred sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) lines selected by five methods from five crosses were tested for yield and other agronomic characters in F6 and F7. More high yielding lines were isolated by the bulk method and in the cross involving two local cultivars when two seasons means and performance in each individual season were considered. The cross involving two exotic cultivars did not produce a single line superior to local recommended variety. The 80 highest yielding lines recorded a 10.8% increase in yield compared to the mean of 400 lines. Thirty five lines were among the top 20% both seasons with a 13.2% increase in yield. Highly significant seasonal and population effects were recorded. There were no significant differences among the methods of selection although the yield differences among lines were highly significant. Interactions of seasons × populations, seasons × methods, populations × methods and seasons × populations × methods were highly significant. The results indicate that simple and less expensive bulk method may be used with equal success as the pedigree, single seed descent or early generation testing methods when selecting for yield in segregating sesame populations. The importance of inclusion of a high yielding, locally adapted cultivar in the crossing programmes for yield breeding of sesame has also been revealed.Abbreviations BM Bulk method - EGT Early generation testing - G × E Genotype × environment - MSS Modified single seed descent - PM Pedigree method - SSD Single seed descent  相似文献

Summary Three Cucumis sativus L. (CS) lines adapted to USA growing conditions were used as female parents in crosses to one line each of seven Cucumis sativus var. hardwickii (R.) Alef. (CH) accessions used as male parents to determine the relative combining ability of the CH accessions for six horticultural characters. The 21 F1 progenies were grown in a randomized complete block design in two locations and evaluated for fruit number, lateral branch number, fruit length, fruit length/diameter ratio, number of female flowering nodes, and days to anthesis. General combining ability (GCA) was significant for all characters in each location. Specific combining ability (SCA) was significant for all characters except days to anthesis in one location and lateral branch number in both locations. Significant location × combining ability interactions were also evident for several characters. Results suggest that CH may be useful for improving fruit yield in commercial cucumber, but that limitations may lie in the attainment of acceptable fruit.Research supported by the College of Agric. and Life Sci., Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison; USDA, ARS, and by funds from Pickle Packers Intl., Inc. Summary The effect of self-pollination of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) for 6 generations in lines developed from the North Carolina Medium Base Pickle population was determined by regression of trait expression for each generation on Wright's coefficient of inbreeding. Two yield traits (total and marketable), earliness and 3 fruit quality traits (shape, color and seedcell size) were evaluated in 2 environments (spring and summer, 1983). The regression did not result in significant negative slopes, indicating that inbreeding depression was not important in the population for the traits studied. Midparent heterosis was found for most traits in many hybrids obtained from crossing S6 lines with the gynoecious inbred line, Gy 14A.  相似文献

Summary The influence of seven recessive male-sterile alleles on early marketable yield, total marketable yield and average fruit weight in heterozygous F1 hybrid tomatoes was studied. Differences were found between nearisogenic F1 hybrid pairs, in the mutants ms-14, ms-17 and ms-18 for percentage of early marketable yield; in the mutants ms-17, ms-31 and ms-47 for average fruit weight; and in the mutants ms-14, ms-17 and ms-33 for total marketable yield. These differences may be attributed to pleiotropic effects of male-sterility alleles or genes highly linked to these alleles. The direction and the magnitude of the pleiotropic effect on a specific characteristic were found to be dependent on the general genetic background of the parental lines and the specific combining ability of the F1 hybrid. Interactions found in crosses between male-sterile and male-fertile female lines and parental lines suggest that male-sterility alleles affect the general combining ability of female lines. Such differences were demonstrated to be statistically significant for percentage of early marketable yield with mutant ms-18, for average fruit weight with mutants ms-47, and for total marketable yield with mutant ms-17 and ms-33. The absence of uniformity with respect to the pleiotropic effects and occasional deviations in the general combining ability are discussed.  相似文献

Ten selected inbred backcross lines (IBL), from a Lycopersicon esculentum cv.‘Peto 84’×Lycopersicon pennellii IBL population, with resistance to beet armyworm (BAW), Spodoptera exigua, higher fruit mass and fruit yield, were crossed with eight elite cultivated L. esculentum inbred lines in a Design II mating design. Three elite inbreds were also crossed to ‘Peto 84′, the IBL recurrent parent, as a control for combining ability. Field plots of all resulting F1 progenies and control cultivars were inoculated with BAW eggs and evaluated for resistance to BAW, fruit mass, fruit yield, vine size and maturity at three field locations. Reductions in fruit damage by BAW were found in four of the 10 IBL F1 progenies. Significant male and female general combining ability (GCA) estimates for BAW resistance were observed, but significant specific combining ability for BAW resistance was not detected. The fruit mass of F1 hybrids was significantly lower than large-fruited controls, but was not significantly different from elite inbred by ‘Peto 95’F1 hybrids. Selection based on inbred performance identified IBL with positive GCA for BAW resistance and yields in Design II hybrids. BAW resistance in the 09 selected IBL and IBL- derived F1 progeny was associated with two undesirable traits, later maturity and larger vine size. Index selection of IBL was more effective at identifying IBL with positive GCA for fruit mass and fruit yield than GCA for BAW resistance.  相似文献

Summary A distant cross between a maintainer Zhenshan 97B and an early maturing F2 palnt of O. longistaminata x O. rufipogon was made in 1985, and a new CMS line Zaoxian A was bred in 1989 through continuous backcross of new maintainer plants derived from the distant cross to the leading CMS line Zhenshan 97A. Several experiments were carried out in Sichuan during 1990–1992, to analyze the inheritance of earliness of Zaoxian A and its application value to hybrid rice production. The results showed that Zaoxian A was as early-maturing as Zhenshan 97A, the earliness of Zaoxian A was incompletely dominant to the lateness of restorer lines, and was different from the earliness of Zhenshan 97A which was suppressed by the lateness of restorer lines. The F1 hybrids between Zaoxian A and late maturing restorers combined the early maturity and high yielding capacity, and significantly outyielded the provincial and national checks with same or longer growth duration, because the larger genetic distance between early and late maturing ecotypes remained unchanged and the new earliness could express in F1 generation. Therefore, the new dominant earliness character of Zaoxian A could enhance the regional and seasonal adaptability of rice. It is also valuable to hybrid rice production and the formation of new cropping systems with high yielding capacity and high economical profit.  相似文献

Summary Significant advances in increasing tolerance to the leafhopper Empoasca kraemeri Ross & Moore in common bean have been obtained using a new breeding scheme where yield under leafhopper attack is the principal selection criterion in the evaluation of progenies. However, to further refine this breeding scheme, a study was conducted to determine whether selection for nonprotected yield would be more effective in early versus late generations. Two selection strategies were compared. In Strategy I, early generation selections in the F2 and F3 were compared to Strategy II where late generation selections were made in the F4 and F5, with the F2 and F3 generations advanced using single pod descent and bulk practices, respectively. Yield trials of the F6 lines from both selection strategies were conducted under nonprotected and insecticide protected treatments. No significant differences were detected between the two selection strategies. However, Strategy II did produce advanced lines with greater nonprotected yields than did Strategy I, with the best F6 line, in three out of four crosses, coming out of Strategy II. Late generation selection is recommended over early generation selection. Results of the new leafhopper breeding scheme, based on yield, are compared to the old breeding scheme where selections were made using visual selection practices in early generations.  相似文献

Summary Backcross populations of maize (Zea mays L.) were produced by crossing the early maturing inbred line W153R with the highland Mexican race Cónico then backcrossing to W153R (Q1 population) and by crossing W153R with the highland Peruvian race San Gerónimo then backcrossing to W153R (Q3 population). The populations were recombined by one generation of random mating. Testcrosses were produced from S0 plants in the original and recombined versions and these were evaluated in New Zealand for grain yield, grain moisture and other traits.Unexpected changes occurred during recombination for increased grain yield in the Q1 population and for decreased grain moisture in the Q3 population. This indicates strong, unplanned selection. Many testcrosses were higher yielding than check hybrids of W153R, but most were later maturing.S1 lines selected for high grain yield and acceptable grain moisture in testcrosses were advanced to the S2 generation and re-tested. All produced testcrosses with lower grain moisture than late maturing hybrid checks. Testcross grain yields of one Q1 line were equivalent to those of late maturing checks and its testcross had a lower grain moisture. The high yield potential of hybrids of this line was confirmed in the S4 generation.  相似文献

Hot pepper is the most important worldwide grown and consumed spice and vegetable crop. Though hybrid breeding has been proposed for genetic improvement in the crop, but there is lack of information on heterosis in crosses among crop genotypes in Ethiopia. Twelve genotypes (nine Asian and three Ethiopian parents) of hot pepper were crossed in 2003 cropping season in a half-diallel fashion to fit Griffing’s fixed effect model analysis. An open field experiment was conducted in 2004/2005 to investigate heterosis for fourteen traits in 66 F1 hybrids grown together with their 12 selfed parents. Highly significant genotypic differences were observed for all the traits except for leaf area. Variance component due to specific combining ability (dominance) were larger than that due to general combining ability (additive) for each of the studied traits with few exceptions. Broad sense heritability (H b2) for fruit traits were more than 60% and with wide gap from narrow sense heritability (h n2) for most of the important traits like number of fruit per plant (H b2 = 88.3% and h n2 = 46.0%), days to maturity (H b2 = 87.2% and h n2 = 23.1%) and dry fruit yield per plant (H b2 = 72.6% and h n2 = 14.6%). Maximum heterosis over mid-parent and better-parent, and economic superiority of hybrid over standard check were recorded, respectively for dry fruit yield per plant (163.8, 161.8 and 92.1%), number of fruits per plant (104.4, 79.6 and 136.4%) and days to maturity (−29.8, −31.5 and −23.6%). These observations suggested a possibility of utilizing dominance genetic potentiality available in diverse genotypes of the crop by heterosis breeding for improving hot pepper to the extent of better economic return compared to the current commercial cultivar under production in the country. Low narrow sense versus very high broad sense heritability for days to maturity and dry fruit yield per plant could be a sign for achievability of earliness and high fruit yield using heterosis in hot pepper. The maximum heterobeltiosis were recorded either from F1s obtained from Ethiopian and Asian crosses or from within Asian crosses, suggesting the possibility of maximizing heterosis by considering genetically diverse parental genotypes. The manifestation of highest heterosis in hybrids from among Asian lines indicated existence of genetic diversity among Asian genotypes and the potentiality for improvement of hot pepper using genotypes from different regions of the world along with elite inbred lines from local cultivars.  相似文献

Summary Experiments were conducted in Wisconsin and Michigan to determine whether selection for multiple disease resistance adversely affects yielding ability of commercial cucumber (Cucumis sativus var. sativus L.; CS) lines. Inbred F4 and F5 lines were developed from C. sativus var. hardwickii (R.) Alef. (CH) x CS which had been either selected or not selected for resistance to the causal organisms of scab, anthracnose, and downy mildew. The exotic CH germplasms possesses a multiple fruiting habit with high yield potential and the CS genotypes include several disease resistance. In each comparison between selected and unselected progeny, the unselected families either significantly outyielded, or were not significantly different than their selected counterparts. In no case did the selected progeny outyield the unselected progeny. Since this was observed for both fruit number per plant and total fruit weight per plant, and it occurred despite differences in fruit size, we conclude that selection for disease resistance led to a reduction in yield potential in these populations.Received for publication-. Summary Two breeding procedures were compared in two cowpea crosses. Both procedures were started from the same selected F2 plants in each cross. For the early generation yield testing, the F3 lines were yield tested and a pedigree and bulk methods followed in F4 and F5. Each F5 line was bulked to provide seed for a yield test in F6. In the Single Seed Descent (SSD) procedure, a single seed was taken from each F2 plant to produce the F3 generation. The procedure was repeated for the F4 and F5. The F6 SSD lines and the F6 yield testing lines were compared in yield tests. The results showed that differences in yielding ability of F3 lines persisted over generations indicating that selection was effective. This was confirmed by the high significant correlations between F3 yields and those of later generations which ranged from r=0.51* to 0.85**.The grain yields of lines derived by the single seed descent procedure were as good as those derived from early generation yield testing.Significant linear correlation between visual rating of F3 and F6 yields with actual yields revealed that it is possible to identify promising lines of cowpea visually.  相似文献

Summary Aspects of selection for yield and harvest index were investigated by simulating selection using data from random pedigreed F2, F3, F4 and F5 derived lines from two crosses grown in plots at two sites over two years.Improvement in yield through selection was obtained when the response was measured at the same site and in the same year as the selection. Selecting the best 10 per cent of F2 to F4 derived lines gave F5 derived lines that outyielded random selections by 19 to 53 per cent for one cross and 5 to 23 per cent for the second cross. These lines were 41 to 50 per cent better than the mid-parent in one cross, but were less than the mid-parent in the other cross. However, the response to selection when measured in a different year was little better than random selection. The effect of different sites also reduced the effectiveness of selection.Selection of harvest index in early generations for improvement of yield was ineffective when response was measured at the same site in the same year, or in different years.Contrary to some theoretical proposals, the same improvement in yield was obtained by selecting in early or late generations. While high yielding genotypes may be lost by delaying selection, this is counteracted by the better predictive value of late generations due to their greater homozygosity and homogeneity.  相似文献

For a better understanding of the inheritance of seed yield traits in Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) Willd., a half-diallelic crossing experiment with six diverse but uniform breeding lines was conducted. True hybrid plants were detected by means of differences in panicle colour in 14 out of the 15 crosses performed. The agronomic performance of 14 F2 populations and six parental lines was evaluated in field trials on fertile clay soil. General and specific combining ability of the lines (GCA and SCA) were estimated. Highly significant differences in GCA effects were found between the lines for plant height at maturity, early flowering, early maturity, seed yield and thousand seed weight. Significant SCA effects were only found for plant height at maturity. However, SCA effects were rather small and accounted for 7% of the total variance. The finding of large GCA effects and low SCA effects suggests that best selection results could be expected from crosses between the agronomic best performing genotypes. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary The efficiency of indirect selection for seed yield was compared with direct selection for yield per se in chickpea. A total of 2500 single F2 plants, derived from 50 crosses with 50 plants from each cross, were divided into five sub-populations (SP1 to SP5) of 500 plants each by including 10 plants from each of the 50 crosses. The five sub-populations were advanced upto F6 by exercising 10% selection intensity for four successive generations for number of pods per plant in SP1, number of seeds per pod in SP2, seed weight in SP3, seed yield in SP4 and random selection in SP5. The efficiency of direct and indirect selection for yield was evaluated by comparing groups of 50 F6 lines from each sub-population. SP1 and SP3 F6 lines showed higher mean grain yield than the other three methods. SP1 and SP3 were found to be almost equally efficient in developing F6 lines which were significantly superior to the check. This suggests that indirect selection for yield via pod number and seed weight is more efficient than direct selection for yield.  相似文献

Summary Variations in feeding value characteristics were studied on a factorial mating design, within a multilocal network. The in vitro digestibility of dry matter (IVDDM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), acid detergent lignin (ADL), starch, soluble carbohydrate, protein and ash contents were evaluated on whole plant samples. The in vitro digestibility of the non-starch and non-soluble carbohydrate plant part (IVDNSC) was also computed from near infra-red reflectance spectroscopy estimations of IVDDM, starch and soluble carbohydrate contents. Variations due to general combining ability (GCA) were more important, for all traits, than variations due to specific combining ability (SCA). Variations due to the GCA × environment interaction were also sizeable and were partly explained by the earliness of the lines. IVDDM was primarily influenced by the relative proportions of cell walls and starch in the whole plant, which were particularly susceptible to the development stage of the plants, at harvest. When adjusted for earliness, there was generally no significant relation between the line per se value and GCA performance in the biochemical constituent contents of the plant. On the contrary, IVDNSC seemed to be a feeding value trait worth evaluating at the inbred line level. It was also almost independent of the ripening stage and could be easily computed from whole plant samples. IVDNSC, with a simultaneous control of starch content, might be a good selection criterion for evaluating and improving the nutritive value of forage maize.  相似文献

Summary Crosses between an early flowering inbred broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica) HS140 and four later maturing inbred lines, S301, S310, s318, and S258, were studied to determine the inheritance of earliness as expressed by days to first open flower. Mean days to first flower for F1 and F2 were almost identical, and were close to the mean of the two parents in three crosses, indicating additive inheritance. In the cross HS140×S258, for which no F1 plants were available, the F2 mean was closer to the mean of the early parent, but this was likely due to a distortion of the data caused by the very late maturation of S258, the latest maturing parent in the study. Frequency distribution for parents and progenies supported the conclusions from parent and progeny mean values and indicated that days to maturity is a quantitative character, with mostly additive inheritance.Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Paper No. 7578.  相似文献

Summary Recurrent selection, using genetic male sterility to facilitate intermating in Glycine max, was evaluated when selecting among individual space-planted S0 soybean plants for three yield-related traits: 1) seed yield per se (YLD), 2) apparent harvest index (AHI), and 3) a selection index in which seed yield was regressed on maturity (REG). The original intermating population was a combination of the cultivar Century and two F2 populations segregating for male sterility. The selection intensity through three cycles of selection was 20%. The YLD population increased in mean yield by 2.8±2.2 g plant-1 cycle-1 buf shifted significantly toward late maturity by 3.9±0.6 days cycle-1. The AHI population decreased in yield by 4.4±2.6 g cycle-1 while maturity shifted slightly earlier; there was very little change in AHI. The REG population increased in yield by 5.7±2.4 g plant-1 cycle-1 while shifting toward later maturity by only 0.8±0.5 day cycle-1. We concluded that selection among S0 plants in these populations, using the selection index of yield regressed on maturity, was affective in increasing single plant yields without causing a significant shift in maturity. Selecting for yield per se caused an unacceptable shift toward late maturity and selection for AHI was ineffective for increasing yield or AHI.  相似文献

Summary The effect of a recurrent selection procedure was evaluated in a winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) population. Cycle zero (C0) was initiated by crossing six high yielding winter barley cultivars with the short straw cv Onice. The F1's were crossed according to a diallel scheme without reciprocals. A total of 750 S0 plants were derived and evaluated; 329 S0 plants were selected and their progenies (S1 lines) tested. Fifteen S1 lines were chosen and used as parents of cycle 1 (C1), by producing 105 F1 hybrids which simulated a random mating offspring. One hundred and three randomly chosen S1 lines belonging to C0, and 103 S1 lines belonging to C1, were evaluated at two locations. For grain yield a significant difference between cycles was observed. From C0 to C1 the grain yield increased with 307 g/m2. This increase was due to a higher number of seeds per m2. For plant height, heading date and 100-kernel weight no differences between cycles were observed. The positive results obtained in this study indicate the potential usefulness of recurrent selection for developing parents or lines superior for grain yield, with little change in other important agronomic traits.  相似文献

A series of half-diallel crosses involving early, medium and late maturity desi and kabuli type chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) genotypes with stable resistance to Helicoverpa pod borer, along with the parents, were evaluated at two locations in India to understand the inheritance of pod borer resistance and grain yield. Inheritance of resistance to pod borer and grain yield was different in desi and kabuli types. In desi type chickpea, the additive component of genetic variance was important in early maturity and dominance component was predominant in medium maturity group, while in the late maturity group, additive as well as dominance components were equally important in the inheritance of pod borer resistance. Both dominant and recessive genes conferring pod borer resistance seemed equally frequent in the desi type parental lines of medium maturity group. However, dominant genes were in overall excess in the parents of early and late maturity groups. In the kabuli medium maturity group, parents appeared to be genetically similar, possibly due to dispersion of genes conferring pod borer resistance and susceptibility, while their F1s were significantly different for pod borer damage. The association of genes conferring pod borer resistance and susceptibility in the parents could be attributed to the similarity of parents as well as their F1s for pod borer damage in kabuli early and late maturity groups. Grain yield was predominantly under the control of dominant gene action irrespective of the maturity groups in desi chickpea. In all the maturity groups, dominant and recessive genes were in equal frequency among the desi parental lines. Dominant genes, which tend to increase or decrease grain yield are more or less present in equal frequency in parents of the early maturity group, while in medium and late maturity groups, they were comparatively in unequal frequency in desi type. Unlike in desi chickpea, differential patterns of genetic components were observed in kabuli chickpea. While the dominant genetic component was important in early and late maturity group, additive gene action was involved in the inheritance of grain yield in medium duration group in kabuli chickpea. The dominant and recessive genes controlling grain yield are asymmetrically distributed in early and medium maturity groups in kabuli chickpea. The implications of the inheritance pattern of pod borer resistance and grain yield are discussed in the context of strategies to enhance pod borer resistance and grain yield in desi and kabuli chickpea cultivars.  相似文献
