Apparent restihg energy expenditure (AREE) and respiratory quotient (RQ) were determined by open flow indirect calorimetry in a group of 104 apparently resting, critically ill, postoperative and severely traumatized dogs. The evaluations were conducted in a calm, temperature-controlled environment after at least a 12-hour fast. Subjects were allowed to acclimilate to the monitoring equipment prior to beginning the study. The clinical patients were compared to a group of 20 clinically normal, apparently resting, client owned dogs (NC). The data was also compared to published normals (NP) for energy expenditure of apparently resting dogs. Measurements were indexed to actual body weight in kilograms (BW) as well as to metabolic body size(BW0.75). Measurements of VO2 (VO2/kg and VO2/kg0.75) and VCO2 (VCO2/kg and VCO2/kg0.75) were used to calculate the RQ and the AREE. Critically ill, postperative and severely lower RQ values AREE/kg or AREE/kg0.75 (p=0.39). The PO&T dogs did exhibit significantly lower RQ values (p<0.0001) than either the (NC) or (NP) groups. Measured AREE of the PO&T dogs was significantly less than a calcualted value using the illness/injury/infection energy requirement (IER), (p<0.0001). Energy expenditure in typical trauma and postoperative patients may commonly be overstimated by the IER method. Conclusion: The AREE of critically ill, postoperative and severly trumatized dogs was not higher than healthy dogs as has been previously suggested in the literature.  相似文献

Arterial blood samples were obtained from thirty normal conscious dogs breathing air. The mean values and standard deviations recorded were PaO2 101.3±5.6 mmHg, PaCO2 34.0±3.9 mmHg, oxygen saturation 93.8 ±1.2%, oxygen content 19.3 ± 1.8 ml/100 ml. Ten dogs with respiratory problems were also examined and of these animals seven had lower than normal oxygen tensions while three had carbon dioxide levels higher than those found in healthy dogs. It was concluded that, in severe respiratory disease, measurement of arterial oxygen tension gives a useful assessment of respiratory failure in dogs.  相似文献

Facial artery pressure, central venous pressure, heart rate, and lateral ventricle cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure (LV-CSFP) were measured in 10 pentobarbital-anesthetized horses at arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) values of 40,60, and 80 mm Hg, produced by varying the inspired carbon dioxide concentration. Variables were recorded at 5-minute intervals for 15 minutes at each level of PaCO2. Arterial blood gas analysis was performed at the end of the 15-minute time period for each level of PaCO2. Lateral ventricle CSF pressure was significantly increased (p < .05) at a PaCO2 of 80 mm Hg. Cardiovascular variables were not significantly changed by changing PaCO2. The PaCO2 was returned to 40 mm Hg; 1.1 mg xylazine/kg body weight was injected intravenously in eight horses, and data were collected for 60 minutes. No significant changes were observed. No changes were observed in two control horses not receiving xylazine. Subsequently, placement of a lumbosacral subarachnoid catheter allowed simultaneous measurement of LV-CSFP and lumbosacral CSF pressure (LS-CSFP) at PaCO2 values of 40,60, and 80 mm Hg. The Pearson Correlation Coefficient between LV-CSFP and LS-CSFP was 0.94 (p < .0001) It was concluded that changes in CSF pressure could be detected at the lateral ventricle and the lumbosacral space; increasing PaCO2 to 80 mm Hg resulted in significant increases in LV-CSFP; xylazine does not increase LV-CSFP in pentobarbital-anesthetized, normocapnic horses; and under the conditions of this experiment, LV-CSFP and LS-CSFP were closely correlated.  相似文献

In the last 21/2 years, 288 grey parrot and amazon species with symptoms of respiratory disease clinically were presented to the clinic for avian medicine at the Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen. Ventro-dorsal and latero-lateral radiographs were taken from all birds; radiologic signs of lower respiratory tract disease were noted. Radiographs were normal in 55 of the birds. The results of the radiographic examination for the remaining 233 birds were compared with the necropsy results of terminally ill parrots, with the results of laboratory examinations/endoscopy/and/or with an examination by computed tomography. Thoracic radiographs were evaluated for occurring radiological abnormalities pertaining to the respiratory tract. The frequency of these lesions and their association with a disease process and/or specific etiology was noted.  相似文献

Changes in cardiopulmonary function and platelet count were determined in 22 dogs of various breeds that underwent total hip replacement with cemented femoral prostheses. In 11 dogs (group I) polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) was inserted without venting the reamed and lavaged femoral canal. In a second group of 11 dogs (group II) a urethral catheter (ID: approximately 2.7 mm) was placed into the medullary cavity before the insertion of PMMA. The application of PMMA resulted in a decrease in end-tidal carbon dioxide tension (PETco2) until 5 minutes after insertion of bone cement. Increases in arterial to end-tidal pCO2 gradient [P(a-ET)co2] and physiological dead space (VD/VT) were recorded between 2 minutes before and 5 minutes after insertion of PMMA in 12 dogs. A significant decrease in platelet count occurred in both groups of dogs. Decreases in arterial pO2 (Pao2), arterial/alveolar oxygen tension ratio (Pao2/PAo2), and percent O2 saturation of hemoglobin in arterial blood (Sao2) were not statistically significant. No significant differences could be detected between data obtained from both groups of dogs. An increase in femoral intramedullary pressure caused by the insertion of PMMA and subsequent pulmonary microembolism by medullary contents has been considered the most likely cause for changes in pulmonary function. The lack of statistically significant differences in cardiopulmonary variables and platelet count between the two groups of dogs could have been related to inefficient pressure reduction by the method used.  相似文献

The cardiopulmonary effects of the intravenous administration of clonidine (15 μg/kg), ST-91 (30 μg/kg) and diazepam (0.4 mg/kg) were compared in five healthy sheep using a randomized cross-over design, to determine whether the hypoxaemic effects of α2 adrenoceptor agonists are due to sedation, or to peripheral α2 adrenoceptor stimulation. All three drugs significantly lowered arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) levels within 2 min of their administration; however, clonidine and ST-91 produced long lasting and severe hypoxaemia with mean PaO2 levels of ≈40 mm Hg and 50 mm Hg (5.3 kPa and 6.6 kPa), respectively. The fall in PaO2 was considerably less with diazepam (63 mm Hg or 8.4 kPa at 2 min) and by 15 min the values did not differ from placebo treated animals. None of the drugs increased arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) levels when compared to saline treatment and the acid base variables did not show any significant change. A significant increase was recorded in the packed cell volume of the ST-91 treated group throughout the study. Within 2 min of their administration, all drugs caused a significant increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP) as compared to the placebo treated group. The MAP remained significantly increased for 5 and 60 min after clonidine and ST-91 treatment, respectively. The study shows that ST-91 and clonidine produce a greater degree of hypoxaemia than occurs with diazepam sedation, and that the hypoxaemic effect of α2 adrenoceptor agonists in sheep are mainly mediated by peripheral α2 adrenoceptors.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug, oxindanac, were assessed simultaneously in calves after intravenous (i.v.) administration at dose rates of 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 8 mg/kg. Plasma pharmacokinetic data were fitted to either two or three compartment open models. The elimination t 1/2 was constant in the dose range 0.5 to 4 mg/kg (20.2–22.8 h) and shorter at 8 mg/kg (14.7 h). The pharmacodynamics of oxindanac were assessed by its inhibition of serum TxB2, an index of platelet cyclo-oxygenase activity. Plots of total plasma oxindanac concentration vs. inhibition of serum TxB2 fitted in all cases a sigmoidal Emax equation. There were no significant differences in the estimates for ED 50 (1.6-1.9 μg/ml), Hill constant (1.3-2.7) or Emax between the doses used in the in vivo studies or when blood was spiked with oxindanac in vitro. Plots of inhibition of serum TxB2 vs. time were prepared from the pharmacokinetic model equations in each calf in combination with a single sigmoidal Emax plot generated in vitro. These data were not significantly different from the results produced in vivo. It is concluded that oxindanac causes reversible inhibition of platelet cyclo-oxygenase in calves. Its inhibition of serum TxB2 can be predicted from total plasma drug concentration, as described by a multicompartmental model, and sigmoidal Emax enzyme kinetics. It was not necessary to take into account factors such as drug equilibration between plasma and its target site, free vs. total drug concentration or chirality. This simple model may be useful for predicting the pharmacodynamics of oxindanac in other species.  相似文献

Ten, anesthetized dogs were instrumented with three pulse oximeter probes; two lingual transmittance probes and one rectal reflective probe. Arterial oxygen desaturation was produced by decreasing the inspired oxygen concentration. Hypotension was produced with an infusion of nitroprusside. Simultaneous pulse oximeter readings (SpO2) were compared to co-oximeter measured arterial saturation (SaO2) collected over a range of SaO2 (50–100%) and mean arterial pressures (40–100mmHg). Each of the monitors and means of evaluating SpO2 studied provided accurate SpO2 measurements over a range of mean arterial pressure from 40–100mmHg. All of the monitors tested tended to overestimate the SaO2 when the arterial saturation was less than 70%.  相似文献

Some physiological effects of the intravenous administration of five different commercial electrolyte solutions were studied in healthy conscious dogs. Measurements were taken before, during and up to 3 h after fluid administration. The measurements included temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, systolic and diastolic arterial pressure, central venous pressure, pO2, pCO2, pH, packed cell volume, haemoglobin, total plasma protein, sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, base excess and creatinine. There were no significant changes in temperature, respiratory rate, systolic pressure, pO2 or pCO2. All dogs showed a similar rise in central venous pressure and a fall in packed cell volume, haemoglobin and total plasma protein in response to the fluid administration. Two saline solutions produced a metabolic acidosis, a fall in plasma potassium values and a rise in chloride. Administration of multi-electrolyte solutions resulted in the least disturbance in acid-base and electrolyte balance.  相似文献

End-tidal monitors for measuring carbon dioxide (CO2) have become widely available for clinical use in the last two decades. This non-invasive technology has been previously evaluated in anesthetized veterinary patients, but its accuracy has not been assessed in critical patients. We investigated the usefulness and limits of end-tidal CO2 monitoring in two populations of critical small animal patients: spontaneously breathing dogs and mechanically ventilated patients with healthy and damaged lungs. In analyzing samples from 43 spontaneously breathing dogs and 34 ventilated patients (28 dogs and six cats), the end-tidal CO2 was generally lower than pCO2. The predictive value for hypoventilation was excellent in both populations (100%). The linear correlation of the end-tidal CO2 and arterial pCO2 in non-panting dogs with healthy lungs was 0.84 (p<0.0001), and the 95% confidence interval (CI) of the difference was ± 3.2 mm Hg. However, the measures were uncorrelated in panting dogs (r=0.37, p=0.27), and the 95% CI was ± 13.37 mm Hg. Furthermore, where multiple samples could be obtained in individual patients, the r values and differences of end-tidal compared to arterial pCO2 varied unpredictably. These variations did not appear to be predicted by patient factors such as lung disease. We conclude that the end-tidal CO2 monitor is clinically useful for detecting hypoventilation and monitoring apnea, but it should be supplemented with arterial pCO2 determinations if it is important to obtain accurate pCO2 measures.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether lingual vanous blood gas samples reflect arterial acid-base gas status in anethetized dogs. Heparinized blood samples were drawn simultaneously from the lingual vein and a peripheral artery in 50 anestheized dogs that were clinical surgical patients, as well as from four experimental dogs in which hemorrahaic shock was being studied. Blood pH, oxygen tension (PO2), and bicarbonate (HCO3-)) from the two sources in clinical patients showed significant liner correlation, although arterial PO2)(PaO2)) tended to be approximately 110mm Hg higher than lingual venous PO2). During hemorrahgic shock, however, PaO2) and PaCO2) were significantly different from lingual venous PO2) and PCO2), Lingula venous blood gas analysis may be useful in assessing acid-base and blood gas status in routline cases, but should not be relied upon in dogs with low cardiac output or poor perfusion.  相似文献

α2-adrenoceptor agonist drugs can cause respiratory changes leading to a short period of hypoxaemia in sheep. It has been suggested that this is due to transient platelet aggregation and pulmonary microembolism. If platelet aggregation were to follow platelet activation in response to the administration of α2 agonists, plasma thromboxane levels would be expected to rise. This study was carried out to measure plasma thromboxane B2 concentrations before and after the intravenous administration of the α2-agonist drug xylazine at a dose of 0.1 mg/kg. It was found that the plasma thromboxane concentration rose by 320% and, furthermore, the rise was prevented by the prior administration of atipamezole hydrochloride (0.125 mg/kg), an α2-adrenoceptor antagonist.  相似文献

Prostaglandin F receptors (PGF Rs) were measured in bovine corpus luteum and myometrial cell membranes using a radiometric method. The inhibition of labelled PGF binding exerted by d-cloprostenol, dl-cloprostenol, PGF and PGE1 (l0–11 M to 10–4 M) was evaluated in vitro. Results strongly suggest that cloprostenol binding to PGFRs is stereospecific. d-Cloprostenol and PGF were equipotent, about 150 times more potent than d-cloprostenol (P < 0.05) and approximately 280 times more potent than PGE, (P < 0.05) in inhibiting [3H]PGF binding to corpus luteum cell membranes. Such differences were less evident in myometrial cell membranes, where d-cloprostenol and PGF were about 10 times more potent than d-cloprostenol (P < 0.05) and approximately 95 times more potent than PGEl (P < 0.05).  相似文献

The leukotrienes (LT) LTD4 and LTB4 have been shown to cause bronchoconstriction and neutrophil accumulation, respectively, in horse lungs. Such changes are characteristic of the equine allergic respiratory disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). To further investigate the role of these putative mediators in the pathogenesis of equine COPD the effect of a 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor, fenleuton, on antigen-induced changes in horses with this condition has been examined. Six horses with COPD underwent a series of four antigen challenges, one month apart, with placebo pre-treatment on three occasions and fenleuton (4 days oral dosing 5 mg/kg) pre-treatment on one occasion. Three horses received fenleuton prior to the second challenge and three horses received the drug prior to the fourth antigen challenge. Changes in radiolabelled neutrophil distribution, lung function and peripheral leucocyte counts were monitored on each occasion for 7 h following the start of antigen challenge. Antigen challenge caused an increase in radioactive counts over the lungs and a decrease in peripheral leucocyte count. Neither response was affected by fenleuton pre-treatment. Mean maximal changes in pleural pressure (ΔPplmax) and respiratory rate were also unaffected by fenleuton pre-treatment. However, in the two horses which responded to antigen-challenge with a particularly marked increase in ΔPplmax (>15 cm H2O), prior administration of fenleuton reduced the response by 64 and 63%. These results suggest that 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors warrant further investigation as bronchodilators in equine COPD.  相似文献

To determine cardiopulmonary and analgesic effects of lidocaine, alfentanil, and xylazine in pigs anesthetized with isoflurane, 18 healthy Landrace-Large White pigs were studied (six for each drug). General anesthesia was induced with isoflurane in O2 and maintained with 1% to 1.2% end-tidal ISO, ensuring presence of a pain response before epidural drug administration. Heart rate (HR), arterial blood pressures (AP), cardiac output (CO), pulmonary arterial pressure, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP), central venous pressure, respiratory rate (RR), tidal volume (TV), minute volume (MV), arterial blood gas data, core temperature (CT), and analgesic effects (by pricking the lumbar area and the abdominal wall) were determined at various times (2, 5, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 90 minutes) after epidural administration of lidocaine (5 μg/kg), alfentanil (5 μg/kg), or xylazine (0.2 mg/kg), all diluted in NaCl 0.9% to 0.5 mL/kg. Statistical analysis included two-way analysis of variance for repeated measures and the least significant difference test for determining differences among means. A probability level of P <.05 was used. The following results were statistically significant decreases in systolic AP, HR, TV, RR, MV, CT, pH, PaO2, and TCO2 and increases in PCWP, PaCO2, and HCO3 after LID. After ALF, only CT and HCO3 decreased. Core temperature and TV decreased after XYL. Lidocaine provided 45 to 60 minutes of analgesia. Alfentanil had no analgesic effects, and xylazine provided 90 minutes of analgesia. The authors conclude that xylazine, when injected epidurally, provides suitable analgesia in isoflurane-anesthetized pigs.  相似文献

Thoracotomy in dogs often is associated with lower than expected arterial oxygen tensions (PaO2). Pulmonary collapse from opening the thoracic cavity is likely to be responsible for decreased PaO2 during thoracotomy. To examine whether positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) is beneficial to dogs undergoing thoracotomy, PaO2 and hemoglobin saturation (SaO2) were measured in dogs randomly assigned to receive 5 cm of H2O PEEP (n = 7) or no PEEP (n = 9). During surgery in both groups of dogs, PaO2 progressively decreased ( P < .001), but the decrease in PaO2 was significantly less in the PEEP group ( P = .027). In both groups, PaO2 did not decrease enough to have a substantial effect on SaO2. Furthermore, application of PEEP during thoracotomy did not prevent moderate hypoxemia after surgery and discontinuation of PEEP. Application of 5 cm of H2O PEEP seems to attenuate the decrease in PaO2 observed in dogs undergoing thoracotomy, but routine application of PEEP does not seem justified. ©  相似文献

Gustin, P., Dhem, A.R., Lekeux, P., Lomba, F., Lándsér, F.J. & Van de Woestijne, K.P. Investigation of the effects of histamine inhalation on the tracheobronchial tree of calves by the forced oscillation technique. J. vet. Pharmacol. Therap. 11 , 374–380.
Effects of histamine inhalation were investigated with two different techniques in nine conscious, healthy calves. The oesophageal balloon technique was used to measure the dynamic respiratory compliance (Cdyn) and the pulmonary resistance (RL). The reactance (Xrs) and the resistance (Rrs) of the respiratory system were measured at high frequencies by the forced oscillation technique. These parameters were recorded before and after histamine inhalation. Three histamine dihydrochloride solution concentrations were used (16 mg/ml; 32 mg/ml; 64 mg/ml). Histamine inhalation induced a decrease in Cdyn and Xrs an increase in Rrs, RL and of the resonant frequency and a negative frequency dependence of Rrs. Some of these changes were satisfactorily correlated with the histamine solution concentrations. The resonant frequency was well correlated with Cdvn. It was concluded that histamine inhalation induces a decrease of the calibre of small and large airways and a non-homogeneous behaviour of the pulmonary ventilation in awake calves. The forced oscillation technique can be used to perform an inhalation provocation test in unsedated animals.  相似文献

The accuracy and precision of an end-tidal infrared CO2 monitor and customized capnography tubing system designed to measure gastrointestinal intraluminal CO2 partial pressure (PiCO2) were tested in vitro. Samples were taken from the customized capnography tubing placed in either 5% or 10% CO2 gas at discrete intervals ranging from one minute to twelve minutes. For a given time interval, the tubing PCO2 measurement was a constant fraction of the actual PCO2 (all standard errors < 0.02). For increasing time intervals, the ratio of the tubing PCO2 to actual PCO2 increased logarithmically. In the 5% and 10% CO2, the regression coefficients were 0.89 and 0.85 for 8 French tubing and 0.99 and 0.91 for 6 French tubing. Beacuase of its accuracy and precision, this system may provide automated gastrointestinal CO2 partial pressure monitoring at short intervals (e.g. 5 minutes), facilitating testing of the role of gastrointestinal PiCO2 information in treatment algorithms. A 60-days experiment was conducted to study the optimum gelatinized (G) to non-gelatinized (NG) starch ratio in the diet of Labeo rohita juveniles with respect to digestive and metabolic response and on growth. Two-hundred and thirty-four juveniles (avg. wt 2.53 ± 0.04 g) were randomly distributed in six treatment groups with each of three replicates. Six semipurified diets either containing NG and/or G corn starch viz., T1 (100% NG, 0% G starch), T2 (80% NG, 20% G starch), T3 (60% NG, 40% G starch), T4 (40% NG, 60% G starch), T5 (20% NG, 80% G starch) and T6 (0% NG, 100% G starch) were prepared. The dry matter digestibility and carbohydrate digestibility were highest (p < 0.05) in T6 group and lowest in T3 and T4 groups. The amylase activity in intestine increased as G:NG level increased in the diet. Protease activity in intestine was highest in T6 group and lowest in T1 group. Similar trend was recorded for specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio and apparent net protein utilization. Liver glycogen, hepatosomatic index and blood glucose level increased linearly with the increasing level of G starch in the experimental diet. The results indicate that higher nutrient digestibility and growth was recorded either at low (20% G starch, T2) or high (100% G starch, T6) G starch fed group. But high G starch fed group (T6) exhibits higher liver glycogen and blood glucose level, which may lead to stress due to long-term feeding. Hence, it is suggested that 20% G and 80% NG starch is optimum for better nutrient digestibility and growth in L. rohita juveniles.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of some a and β sympathomimetic and sympatholytic drugs on respiratory impedance in healthy conscious calves. Ten Friesian calves were investigated in this study. The forced oscillation technique was used to measure the resistance ( R rs) and the reactance ( X rs) of the respiratory system at frequencies ranging from 4 to 26 Hz. Isoprenaline (1 μg/kg i.v.), propranolol (3 μg/kg i.v.), noradrenaline (2 μg/kg i.v.), xylazine (20 μg/kg i.v.) and yohimbine (0.25 mg/kg i.v.) were administered. Isoprenaline induced a significant decrease of R rs. An increase of R rs after administration of propranolol was observed but without any change of the frequency dependence of R rs. A small increase in the resonant frequency was also recorded. A decrease of R rs was recorded after yohimbine injection. Noradrenaline and xylazine administration increased the resistances and the resonant frequency and induced a negative frequency dependence of R rs. These results suggest that (1) the major effects of β adrenergic drugs are on the central airways, (2) the a adrenergic system may play a role on the regulation of bronchomotor tone in calves, (3) the effects of a adrenergic drugs are on both central and peripheral airways and (4) the forced oscillation technique allows the differentiation of calibre changes occurring in small and large airways.  相似文献
