A preliminary nutrient cycling study quantified total and temporal nutrient inputs via litterfall and pruning residues in two agroforestry systems: (1) Coffea arabica (perennial crop)-Erythrina poeppigiana (leguminous shade tree); and (2) C. arabica-E. poeppigiana-Cordia alliodora with emphasis on the effect of the timber tree C. alliodora. The total annual input of litterfall plus pruning residues was similar in both associations. Total annual input from E. poeppigiana was less than half in the association with C. alliodora than without, but the litterfall from this latter species compensated for the loss. Large differences in the total annual nutrient input of K, Ca and Mg was found between associations, but not for N or P. The amount of nutrients recycled by the associated trees reached the recommended level of fertilizer required for coffee production. The inclusion of C. alliodora within the C. arabica-E. poeppigiana association resulted in a more evenly distributed annual nutrient input. 相似文献

Arazá (Eugenia stipitata), a fruit shrub originating from Western Amazonia, was evaluated growing in association with timber shade trees (Acacia mangium or Cordia alliodora) or with plantain (Musa sp.) as a potential commercial species for the tropical moist lowlands of Talamanca, Costa Rica. Height and crown width of
the four-year-old shrubs varied between 2.7–2.8 m and 2.9–3.1 m, respectively. Flowering was positively correlated with initial
fruit formation 1 month later and initial fruit formation with fully developed fruits a subsequent month after that. Three
to four-year-old plants produced 20.0, 20.0, and 24.5 t ha−1 yr−1 (fresh fruits) in associations with A. mangium, C. alliodora and plantain, respectively, with higher production in rainy months. Fruit production in later years under C. alliodora (six to eight-year-old shrubs) was 26.5 t ha−1 yr−1. Where markets exist for E. stipitata fruit, the association can be recommended for tropical humid lowlands of Central America. 相似文献

Fine root dynamics of shaded cacao plantations in Costa Rica 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Root turnover may contribute a significant proportion of recycled nutrients in agroforestry systems and competition between trees and crops for nutrients and water may depend on temporal fine root regrowth patterns. Fine root biomass ( 2 mm) and fine root productivity were measured during one year in plantations of cacao (Theobroma cacao) shaded by Erythrina poeppigiana or Cordia alliodora planted on a deep alluvial soil in Turrialba, Costa Rica. Fine root biomass of approximately 1.0 Mg ha–1 varied little during the year with maximum values at the beginning of the rainy season of 1.85 Mg ha–1 in the cacao-C. alliodora system compared to 1.20 Mg ha–1 for cacao-E. poeppigiana. Fine root productivity of C. alliodora and E. poeppigiana (maximum of 205 and 120 kg ha–1 4 week–1, respectively) was greatest at the end of the rainy season, while for cacao it was greatest at the beginning of the rainy season (34–68 kg ha–1 4 week–1), which suggests that if nutrient competition occurs between the shade trees and the cacao, it could be minimized by early fertilization during the beginning of the rains immediately after pruning the shade trees. Annual fine root turnover was close to 1.0 in both systems. Assuming that fine root biomass in these mature plantations was constant on an annual basis, nutrient inputs from fine root turnover were estimated as 23–24 (N), 2 (P), 14–16 (K), 7–11 (Ca) and 3–10 (Mg) kg ha–1 year–1, representing 6–13% and 3–6% of total nutrient input in organic matter in the C. alliodora and E. poeppigiana systems, respectively. 相似文献

Predictive models were developed for Cordia alliodora branch and Theobroma cacao branch or leaf biomass,based on branch basal areas (r2 0.79) but the model of C. alliodora leaf biomass, although significant, was of very low accuracy (r2 = 0.09) due to annual leaf fall. At age 10 years, shade tree stem biomass accounted for 80% of the total above-ground biomass of either tree. However, between the ages of 6 and 10 years, the biomass increment of T. cacao branches (3–4t.ha–1.a–1) was similar to that of the shade tree stems. During the same period, the net primary productivity was 35 and 28 t.ha–1.a–1, for the Erythrina poepigiana and and C. alliodora systems, respectively.Cocoa production under either of the shade trees C. alliodora or E. poeppigiana was 1000 kg.ha–1.a–1 (oven-dry; ages 6–10 yr). During the same period, C. alliodora timber production was 9 m3.ha–1.a–1 whilst the leguminous shade tree E. poeppigiana does not produce timber. Litterfall over the same 5 years, including crop and/or shade tree pruning residues, averages 11 and 23 t.ha–1.a–1, respectively. The main difference was due to E. poeppigiana pruning residues (10t.ha–1.a–1).Soil organic material reserves (0–45 cm) increased over 10 years from 198 to 240 t.ha–1 in the E. poeppigiana plots and from 168–184 t.ha–1 in the C. alliodora plots. These values, together with the productivity indices presented, provide evidence that the systems are sustainable.For economic reasons, the use of C. alliodora is recommended under the experimental conditions. however, on less fertile soils without fertilization, the greater biomass and hence nutrient return to the soil surface under E. poeppigiana, might make this the preferable shade tree. 相似文献

During 7 years (1979–1985) cacao harvests (beans and husks) have been recorded for the agroforestry systems ofTheobroma cacao underCordia alliodora andErythrina poeppigiana shade trees. The mean oven dry cacao yields were 626 and 712 kg.ha−1.a−1 cocoa beans underC. alliodora andE. poeppigiana respectively. Harvests have gradually increased over the years and the plantation has now reached maturity.
Annual extraction of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in fruits, which is relatively small, was calculated on the basis of chemical analyses.
The following average values were found (kg.ha−1.a−1):
At the age of 8 years, theC. alliodora trees have reached 26.7 cm diameter (DBH) and 14.0 m in height. Mean annual growth (from age 5 to 7) is 14.6 m3.ha−1.a−1.
Natural plant residue production has been measured for 4 years (Nov. 1981–Oct. 1985). UnderE. poeppigiana it has reached a value of 8.91 t.ha−1.a−1 and underC. alliodora 7.07 t.ha−1.a−1. The shade trees have contributed 57 and 47% respectively. Transference and decomposition rates are high and important in
the nutrient cycles.

Three production systems (robusta coffee, cattle pastures and swidden agriculture), all associated with trees, have provided a strategy for regional development in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Feedback from more than 250 on-farm demonstrations, project evaluations and visitors have all contributed to strengthening the ability of the Ecuadorean Ministry of Agriculture's Forestry Directorate to provide colonists and indigenous groups with management guidelines for low-input sustainable agroforestry production. The existing market for 20 fastgrowing native tree species presents an opportunity for the diversification of farm income (currently dependent on robusta coffee) and for the development of a forest industrial base.The collective area of land owned and operated by these small holders constitutes a national resource and a Collective Forest Estate that can be individually managed. Commercial timber production in these extensive secondary forests can help alleviate conversion of primary forest without taking agricultural land out of production. 相似文献

Agroforestry options as a means of promoting reforestation were testedby establishing with 10 farmers simple comparisons between pure plantations andtimber trees with annual or perennial intercrops. Two year-old intercroppedtrees on-farm had 22–48% greater height and 24–38% greater diameterthan trees in pure plantations. The exception was Cordiaalliodora that did not respond significantly to intercropping withcassava (Manihot esculenta). Only intercrops with the mostvaluable crops on agricultural soils produced a return to labour above thedailywage rate. On non-agricultural soils, farmers only intercrop a small area oftheir plantations with subsistence crops to meet home consumption needs. In thecontext of Costa Rica intercropping appeared to have a limited potential tofinance the reforestation costs of farmers. 相似文献

The relative importance of N fixation, organic material inputs and nutrient inputs in litterfall, as justifications for including shade trees in plantations of coffee or cacao, is discussed. According to existing data, N fixation by leguminous shade trees does not exceed 60 kg.N/ha/a. However, these trees contribute 5,000–10,000 kg. organic material/ha/a.Comparisons are made between the leguminous shade tree Erythrina poeppigiana and the non-leguminous timber tree Cordia alliodora. The former, when pruned 2 or 3 times/a., can return to the litter layer the same amount of nutrients that are applied to coffee plantations via inorganic fertilizers, even at the highest recommended rates for Costa Rica of 270 kg.N, 60 kg.P, 150 kg.K/ha/a. The annual nutrient return in this litterfall represents 90–100 percent of the nutrient store in above-ground biomass of E. poeppigiana, and hence the consequences of competition with the crop should not be a serious limitation. In the case of C. alliodora, which is not pruned, nutrient storage in the tree stems, especially of K, is a potential limiting factor to both crop and tree productivity.It is concluded that, in fertilized plantations of cacao and coffee, litter productivity is a more important shade tree characteristic than N fixation.An early version of this review was presented at the CATIE-IUFRO meeting Los Arboles de Uso Multiple en Sistemas Agroforestales, June 1985, Turrialba, Costa Rica. 相似文献

A scarcity of cultivation land calls for more intensive and productive land use in the East Usambara Mountains in NE Tanzania.
Spice crops could generate cash in higher parts of the mountains, but the present cultivation methods are depleting the valuable
forest resources. The trial was established at the end of 2000 to find out how the two popular cash crops, cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton.) and black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), normally grown under the natural forest, will produce in intensive agroforestry system with two multipurpose farm trees,
Grevillea robusta A.Cunn. and nitrogen fixing Gliricidia sepium Jacq. Results from 6 years showed that cardamom produced better with grevillea than in natural forest; 5.5 times more in
the fourth year than the average in the area. The Land Equivalent Ratios for black pepper and cardamom showed that pepper
intercropped with grevillea produced 3.9 times more than in monoculture whereas cardamom intercropped with grevillea and pepper
produced 2.3 times more than in monoculture. Gliricidia improved the nitrogen and organic matter content of the soil over
the levels found in natural forest. Soil acidity was, however, preventing the plants from using the available mineral nutrients

A questionnaire survey was conducted among 72 randomly selected households in Bukoba district, Tanzania from August to November 1991. The objective of the study was to identify the major constraints to increased productivity in homegardens and farmers response to these constraints. Declining of homegarden productivity seems to have been influenced by the gradual decline of soil fertility mainly as a result of decrease in cattle population, the serious outbreak of banana weevils, nematodes and later Panama disease, fragmentation of homegardens due to population growth and lack of cash. As a result, homegardens can no longer subsist farm families for the most part of the year. The actual decline in banana yield is 66% over the last 20 years. Incomes are too low to support modest investment to improve productivity in homegardens. Farmers' responses to these problems have been out-migration, a shift towards cultivation of root crops, planting of beer banana and decrease in homegarden management intensity. These responses however are likely to offer only short term and partial solutions. 相似文献

Bukoba district is located in the north-western part of Tanzania and its economy is predominantly agricultural. Banana and coffee are, respectively, the most important food and cash crops. Population density is very high (500–1250 persons per km2 of cultivated land) and so is the pressure on land and other natural resources. Farm holdings (homegardens) are mostly smaller than a hectare and continue to fragment as population continues to grow. A homegarden is locally known as Kibanja and it is both a social and economic unit of farm families in the district. Various crops, trees, shrubs, herbs and livestock are managed on the same piece of land mainly by family labour to provide food, cash, medicine, shade, poles, timber and some socio-cultural functions. The conversion of forests to agroecosystems or agroforests comes with many changes in biological and chemical processes. Agroforestry,
a tree based agroecosystem, has shown promise with respect to enhanced system nutrient accumulation after land conversion
as compared to sole cropping systems. Previous research on tropical agroforestry systems has revealed increases in soil organic
matter and total organic nitrogen in the short term. However, research is lacking on long-term system level sustainability
of nutrient cycles and storage, specifically in traditional multi-strata agroforestry systems, as data on both the scope and
duration of nutrient instability are inconclusive and often conflicting. This study, conducted in Ghana, West Africa, focused
on carbon and nitrogen dynamics in a twenty-five year chronosequence of cacao (Theobroma cacao Linn.) plantations. Three treatments were selected as on-farm research sites: 2, 15 and 25-year-old plantations. Soil carbon
(C, to a depth of 15 cm) varied between treatments (2 years: 22.6 Mg C ha−1; 15 years: 17.6 Mg C ha−1; 25 years: 18.2 Mg C ha−1) with a significant difference between the 2- and 15- and the 2- and 25-year-old treatments (p < 0.05). Total soil nitrogen in the top 15 cm varied between 1.09 and 1.25 Mg N ha−1 but no significant differences were noted between treatments. Soil nitrification rates and litter fall increased significantly
with treatment age. However, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and soil temperature showed a significant decrease
with age. No difference was found between decay rates of litter at each treatment age. By 25 years, system carbon sequestration
rates were 3 Mg C ha−1 y−1, although results suggest that even by 15 years, system-level attributes were progressing towards those of a natural system. 相似文献

This paper presents results of an evaluation of the benefits provided by agroforestry and farm forestry projects in Central America and the Caribbean, and the policy implications. Tree planting provided financial benefits to farmers, as well as social, economic and environmental benefits. These justify policy interventions to explicitly recognize the potential of on-farm tree-planting efforts and provide a policy environment favorable to such efforts. New or revised policies are needed, particularly in a period of declining public budgets, to limit external incentives to in-kind inputs, rather than financial subsidies; promote market development for tree products; adopt low-cost, community-based extension strategies; focus research support; and reduce regulatory disincentives. 相似文献

The rapid appraisal and farmer selection procedures, preceding the establishment of over fifty agroforestry research trials
on farms in Talamanca, Costa Rica are described. The highest probability of success and impact of these long-term collaborative
trials is obtained by selecting innovative, experienced, motivated and locally respected farmers. The methodological lessons
learned from implementing three types of researcher managed trials (shade-cacao; black pepper on living support posts; timber
production in boundary lines) are discussed. The importance of fitting farmer selection criteria to project objectives, experimental

A taxonomic study on 14 cone and needle traits of 281 trees from 33 provenances of Pinus oocarpa, P. oocarpa var. ochoterenae, P. patula var. longipedunculata, P. patula var. patula and P. tecunumanii in Central America and Mexico was conducted to quantify the affinity between closely related species. A second objective was to determine the geographic range of P. tecunumanii in Mexico. Cluster analysis placed 52% of all provenances in taxa different from those assigned by field foresters. Trees from 15 provenances of what was locally known as Pinus oocarpa var. ochoterenae from Chiapas were statistically indistinguishable from high elevation Central American sources of P. tecuncumanii when assessed for cone and needle characteristics. However, trees from two provenances known locally as P. oocarpa var. ochoterenae from southwestern Oaxaca, Juquila and Tlacuache, were found to be distinct from P. tecunumanii and may be a variant of P. patula. Canonical discriminant analysis was used to determine the taxonomic affinity among newly formed clusters. The spatial (Mahalanobis) distance between P. tecunumanii and P. patula var. patula, P. patula var. longipedunculata, and P. oocarpa was 42.0, 44.4, and 109.4 respectively, and highly significant. The geographic range of Pinus tecunumanii in Mexico appears to be confined to the state of Chiapas. 相似文献

Software modules have been developed to predict the radiative environment of plant stands consisting of computer 'mock-ups'
of plants. The architecture of plants used for the computation of radiative characteristics was described at the level of
individual organs and simulated according to botanical rules. Three-dimensional stochastic numeric mock-ups were computed
for coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) and for cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) according to the 'AMAP' methodology. Then the numerical radiative models were applied to these 'virtual plants' to describe
the radiative budgets of individual plant parts and entire plants. Modelled light transmission through virtual coconut canopies
was in good agreement with field measurements for different treatments and management practices including palm ages, varieties,
and planting densities. In a second stage, combining the computer models of coconuts and cacao in a multistrata system, the
fraction of radiation that was transmitted through the coconut canopy and intercepted by cacao was sucessfully simulated.

Plant growth, biomass production and nutrient accumulation by slash/mulch agroforestry systems in tropical hillsides of Colombia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Planted fallow systems under ‘slash and mulch’ management were compared with natural fallow systems at two farms (BM1 and
BM2) in the Colombian Andes. The BM1 site was relatively more fertile than the BM2 site. Planted fallow systems evaluated
included Calliandra calothyrsus CIAT 20400 (CAL), Indigofera constricta (IND) or Tithonia diversifola (TTH). During each pruning event slashed biomass was weighed, surface-applied to the soil on the same plot and sub-samples
taken for chemical analyses. While Indigofera trees consistently showed significantly greater (p < 0.05) plant height and collar diameter than Calliandra trees at both study sites, only collar diameter in Indigofera was significantly affected at all sampling times by differences between BM1 and BM2. After 27 months, TTH presented the greatest
cumulative dry weight biomass (37 t ha–1) and nutrient accumulation in biomass (417.5 kg N ha–1, 85.3 kg P ha–1, 928 kg K ha–1, 299 kg Ca ha–1 and 127.6 kg Mg ha–1) among planted fallow systems studied at BM1. Leaf biomass was significantly greater (P < 0.05) for CAL than IND irrespective
of site. However, CAL and IND biomass from other plant parts studied and nutrient accumulation were generally similar at BM1
and BM2. At both sites, NAT consistently presented the lowest biomass production and nutrient accumulation among fallow systems.
Planted fallows using Calliandra and Indigofera trees had the additional benefit of producing considerable quantities of firewood for household use.
